Formé par le violiste Sainte-Colombe puis par Lully, Marin Marais occupe une place centrale dans l’histoire de la viole en France. Son activité de compositeur, qui coïncide exactement avec sa carrière de violiste ordinaire du roi (1679-1725), débute une cinquantaine d’années après l’apparition en France d’une pratique soliste de la viole avec Maugars et Horman pour s’achever une autre cinquantaine d’années avant les dernières publications françaises pour pardessus de viole. Son œuvre, plus abondante que celui d’aucun autre violiste français, comprend, en plus de quelque six cent trente pièces pour une à trois violes et basse continue qui associent le double héritage de ses deux maîtres, deux recueils de musique de chambre et cinq tragédies lyriques. Mais loin d’être un épigone remarquable seulement par sa prolixité, Marais fait montre d’un langage personnel et expressif d’une grande richesse harmonique, innove en faisant accompagner la viole de la basse continue et trouve autant de réussite dans de courtes danses que dans des pièces de longue haleine comme Le Labyrinthe enregistré ici ou dans une vaste fresque symphonique comme La Tempête de la tragédie lyrique Alcyone (1706).

Un manuscrit autographe d’environ 1680 contient une première version des Couplets de folies, que Marais dut remanier et enrichir progressivement jusqu’à la publication dans le second livre de ses Pièces de viole (1701) de la version enregistrée ici. Ce lointain écho de la tradition anglaise des divisions on a ground – relayée en France 11

par André Maugars – est la seule œuvre de Marais à utiliser un thème emprunté, en l’occurrence une grille harmonique connue en Espagne dès le milieu du XVIe siècle et très populaire en France à partir du dernier quart du XVIIe siècle. La version de Marais, une des élaborations de ce thème les plus marquantes par l’ampleur et la variété, soutient avantageusement la comparaison avec ses devanciers français comme le luthiste Jacques Gallot ou les clavecinistes Jean-Henry d’Anglebert et Marc Roger Normand Couperin, ainsi qu’avec la célèbre sonate La Follia de Corelli, publiée en 1700. Marais y exploite tous les registres de l’instrument et joue sur l’opposition entre les coups d’archet ou les tempi ; la basse sort souvent de son rôle de simple soutien harmonique pour dialoguer avec le soliste ou l’accompagner à la tierce.

Chez Marais et ses prédécesseurs français, la suite représente davantage un cadre souple qu’un tout aux mouvements organiquement liés comme chez certains compositeurs allemands. Au terme « suite », assez rare dans les sources, les Français préfèrent celui de « pièces », qui en désigne les composantes : c’est lui qui apparaît dans les titres des publications ou sert d’antithèse aux sonates italiennes. Rien d’étonnant donc à ce que la suite en mi mineur (numéros 96 à 110 du Second Livre1) regroupe des pièces composées sur une vingtaine d’années : la première gigue et le Rondeau champêtre figurent déjà dans le manuscrit autographe cité plus haut.

Marais reprend en l’élargissant le plan type prélude, allemande, courante, sarabande, gigue. Ainsi, un prélude à l’éloquence pathétique et une vive fantaisie à trois temps composent un diptyque évoquant une version intimiste de l’ouverture à la française.

Plus loin, certains mouvements sont proposés par paires contrastées : la première 12

sarabande et la gigue « La Badine » illustrent le « jeu de mélodie » tandis que la sarabande « à l’espagnole » et la première gigue fournissent de parfaits exemples de « pièces d’harmonie » pour viole seule pourvues a posteriori d’une basse continue entièrement déduite de la partie principale. Après deux gracieux menuets, l’imposant Tombeau pour M. de Sainte-Colombe renoue subitement avec le langage oratoire du prélude et le discret chromatisme de l’allemande. Marais dédie à la mémoire de son maître disparu au cours de la décennie précédente une vaste pièce d’un seul tenant bâtie sur un motif chromatique descendant.

Avec Le Labyrinthe, extrait de la Suitte d’un goût étranger, deuxième partie du quatrième livre de Pièces de viole (1717), Marais rompt avec la forme toute classique des pièces précédentes. La viole s’élance avec un motif guilleret et carré, explore successivement plusieurs tonalités qui sont autant de fausses routes, s’octroie des moments de réflexion, exprime son désarroi dans de pathétiques récitatifs et, ayant enfin retrouvé le la majeur initial au terme d’un parcours très modulant, ne le quitte plus tout au long de l’ample chaconne conclusive. Cette sorte de pantomime annonce La Gamme en forme de petit opéra pour violon, viole et basse continue (1723), où Marais transposera à nouveau, à une plus vaste échelle, l’univers de la scène dans la musique de chambre.

Marin Marais (1656-1728) occupies a central place in the history of the viol in France.

Trained by the gambist Sainte-Colombe, then by Lully, he began his compositional activity, which coincides exactly with his career as violiste ordinaire du Roi (1679-1725), some fifty years after the appearance in France of solo viol playing with Maugars and Hotman, and ended it fifty years before the issue of the last French publications for pardessus de viole. His output, more abundant than that of any other French composer for the viol, comprises some 630 pieces for one, two or three viols and continuo which combine the teachings of his two masters, as well as two collections of chamber music and five tragédies lyriques. But, far from being a mere epigone, remarkable only for his productivity, Marais exhibits a personal expressive language of great harmonic richness and a sense of innovation in adding continuo accompaniment to the viol; he is equally successful in brief dance movements and in large-scale pieces such as Le Labyrinthe (recorded here) or on a vast orchestral canvas like the storm scene from his tragédie lyrique Alcyone (1706).

An autograph manuscript from around 1680 contains an initial version of the Couplets de folies, which Marais must have gradually revised and enriched until the publication in his second book of viol pieces (1701) of the version recorded here. This distant echo of the English tradition of ‘divisions on a ground’ – introduced to France by André Maugars – is the only work by Marais to make use of a borrowed theme, in fact a 15

harmonic scheme attested in Spain since the mid-sixteenth century and extremely popular in France from the last quarter of the seventeenth onwards. The version by Marais, one of the most strikingly extensive and varied elaborations of the theme, stands up well to comparison with those of his French predecessors such as the lutenist Jacques Gallot and the harpsichordists Jean-Henry d’Anglebert and Marc-Roger Normand Couperin, and with Corelli’s celebrated sonata La Follia, published in 1700.

Marais exploits all the instrument’s registers and plays on contrasting bowings and tempos; the bass often emerges from its role of simple harmonic support to engage in dialogue with the solo line or accompany it in thirds.

In the works of Marais and his French forerunners, the suite constitutes more a flexible framework than a total entity of organically linked movements, as is the case with some German composers. In preference to the term ‘suite’, quite rare in the sources, the French employed ‘pièces’, thus designating the individual components; it is this word that appears in the titles of their published collections or is set up in antithesis to the sonatas of the Italians. Hence it is scarcely surprising that the Suite in E minor (nos.96-110 of the second book)1 assembles pieces composed over a period of twenty years or so: the first gigue and the Rondeau champêtre already feature in the autograph manuscript mentioned above.

Marais takes up and expands the standard scheme of prelude, allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue. Thus a Prélude of moving eloquence and a lively triple-time Fantaisie compose a diptych suggesting an intimately scaled version of the ouverture à la française. Later in the work, certain movements are presented in contrasting 16

The viol launches into a perky foursquare motif, explores in succession a number of keys all of which turn out to be dead ends, allows itself moments of reflection, expresses its confusion in pathos-laden recitatives, and having finally found its way back to the A major of the opening after a trajectory full of modulatory twists and turns, deviates from it not at all throughout the broad Chaconne that closes the work. This mime show, so to speak, foreshadows La Gamme en forme de petit opéra (The scale in the form of a miniature opera) for violin, viol and continuo (1723), in which Marais was once to again to bring the world of the stage into chamber music, now with greater amplitude.

pairs: the first sarabande and the gigue La Badine illustrate what was called the ‘jeu de mélodie’, while the Sarabande à l’espagnole and the first gigue offer perfect examples of ‘pièces d’harmonie’ for solo viol equipped a posteriori with a basso continuo part wholly derived from the principal line. After two graceful minuets, the imposing Tombeau pour M. de Sainte-Colombe suddenly reverts to the oratorical language of the Prélude and the discreet chromaticism of the Allemande. Here Marais dedicates to the memory of his teacher, who had died in the course of the previous decade, a vast through-composed piece built on a descending chromatic motif.

In der Geschichte der der Viola da gamba in Frankreich nimmt Marin Marais eine zentrale Stellung ein. Diese Geschichte beginnt mit dem Auftreten von Maugars und Horman als Sologambisten, fünfzig Jahre bevor Marais zu komponieren anfängt, und endet ein halbes Jahrhundert nach den letzten französischen Kompositionen für dieses Instrument. Marais war ein Schüler von Sainte-Colombe und später von Lully; seine kompositorische Tätigkeit fällt mit der Beschäftigung als „violiste ordinaire du roi“ am Versailler Hof zusammen (1679-1725). Sein Werk, umfassender als das jedes anderen französischen Gambisten, umfasst außer sechshundertdreißig Stücken für eine bis drei Gamben und Basso continuo, in denen das Erbe seiner beiden Lehrer zum Tragen kommt, zwei Sammlungen mit Werken für Kammermusik und fünf lyrische Tragödien. Marais verfügt über eine persönliche, expressive Sprache von großem harmonischem Reichtum, er zeigt sich mit der Begleitung der Gambe durch den Generalbass als Neuerer und wirkt ebenso erfolgreich in Kompositionen für kurze Tänze wie in sehr viel umfangreicheren Werken wie zum Beispiel in dem hier aufgenommenen Le Labyrinthe, in dem breiten symphonischen Fresko La Tempête und in der lyrischen Tragödie Alcyone (1706).

entfernte Echo auf die englische Tradition der divisions on a ground – die in Frankreich zuerst von André Maugars aufgegriffen wurde – ist das einzige Werk, in dem Marais ein musikalisches Thema entlehnt, das eines harmonischen Typus, der in Spanien seit der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts bekannt und in Frankreich ab dem ersten Viertel des 17. Jahrhunderts sehr beliebt war. Marais’ Version, durch ihre Breite und Vielfalt eine der markantesten Ausarbeitungen dieses Themas, hält einem Vergleich mit den Werken französischer Vorläufer wie des Lautenisten Jacques Gallot oder der Cembalisten Jean-Henry d’Anglebert und Marc Roger Normand Couperin durchaus stand und besteht auch neben der berühmten Sonate La Follia von Corelli (die 1700 veröffentlicht wurde). Marais zieht hier alle Register des Instruments und spielt mit dem Gegensatz zwischen Bogenstrichen und Tempi; der Bass wächst oft über seine Rolle der harmonischen Unterstützung hinaus und dialogisiert mit dem Solisten oder begleitet ihn in der Terz.

Bei Marais und seinen französischen Vorläufern stellt die Suite eher einen geschmeidigen Rahmen dar als ein geschlossenes Ganzes aus organisch miteinander verbundenen Sätzen wie bei manchen deutschen Komponisten. Dem Begriff „Suite“, der in den Quellen selten vorkommt, ziehen die Franzosen die Bezeichnung „Pièces“ („Stücke“) vor: sie erscheint in den Titeln der veröffentlichten Kompositionen und dient auch zur Unterscheidung von den italienischen Sonaten. Es überrascht daher nicht, dass die Suite in e-moll (Nr. 96-110 des Second Livre)1 aus Stücken besteht, die im Verlauf von zwanzig Jahren komponiert wurden: die erste Gigue und das Rondeau champêtre figurieren bereits in dem oben zitierten Manuskript.

Marais greift die Struktur Prélude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue auf und weitet sie aus. So bilden z.B. ein Prélude von gefühlvoller Eloquenz und eine lebhafte 20

Einige spätere Sätze werden als Kontrastpaare geboten: die erste Sarabande und die Gigue „La Badine“ illustrieren das „melodische Spiel“, während die Sarabande „à l’espagnole“ und die erste Gigue vollendete Beispiele der „Pièces d’harmonie“ für Sologambe liefern, die nachträglich mit einem ganz aus dem Hauptstück abgeleiteten Basso continuo versehen werden. Nach zwei graziösen Menuetts knüpft das Tombeau pour M. de Sainte-Colombe plötzlich an die Oratoriensprache des Prélude und die diskrete Chromatik der Allemande an. Marais widmet dem Andenken an seinen im verflossenen Jahrzehnt verstorbenen Lehrer ein umfangreiches, zusammenhängendes Stück , das auf einem absteigenden chromatischen Motiv aufbaut.

Mit Le Labyrinthe, einem Auszug aus der Suitte d’un goût étranger, dem zweiten Teil des vierten Buchs der Pièces de viole (1717), bricht Marais mit der ganz und gar klassischen Form der vorhergehenden Stücke. Die Gambe setzt mit einem fröhlichen und direkten Motiv ein, ergeht sich nacheinander in mehreren Tonarten, die sich als Sackgassen erweisen, gestattet sich reflexive Momente und bringt ihre Verwirrung in rührenden Rezitativen zum Ausdruck, bevor sie nach sehr modulationsreichem Verlauf zur Ausgangstonart A-dur zurückfindet, die sie während der abschließenden breiten Chaconne nicht mehr loslässt – eine Art Pantomime, in der sich La Gamme en forme de petit opéra für Violine, Viola und Basso continuo (1723) ankündigt, in der Marais auf größerer Stufenleiter ein weiteres Mal die Kammermusik in die Welt der Bühne transponiert.
