« DU POINT DE VUE STYLISTIQUE, LOUIS COUPERIN SUIT LA GRANDE TRADITION DES CLAVECINISTES E DU XVII SIÈCLE. »

FRAN

‘IN STYLISTIC TERMS, LOUIS COUPERIN STANDS IN THE GREAT SEVENTEENTHCENTURY TRADITION OF HARPSICHORD PLAYING.’

Louis Couperin (c.1626-1661) belongs to the first generation of an illustrious dynasty of musicians, the most famous member of which is his nephew François Couperin, ‘Le Grand’. In stylistic terms, Louis Couperin stands in the great seventeenth-century tradition of harpsichord playing that was initiated and developed by the Italian Frescobaldi and the German Froberger, though his French ‘family’ of outstanding musicians included Chambonnières, d’Anglebert and Marin Marais. Comparison with the rather younger Marin Marais is interesting in several respects. It is generally overlooked that both were viol players, since Marais was always recognised as the greatest genius of the viol while none of Louis Couperin’s viol music is known to have survived. The two men share an uncommon passion for wide-ranging virtuoso abilities, from the most sentimental and touching to the brutally savage. Such powerful savagery at the harpsichord came from neither the French lute players nor the air de cour, but from the Italians, through their toccatas, and from the Germans with their stylus phantasticus-enriched harpsichord playing. This expressive style, full of powerful contrasts, of which Louis Couperin is probably the sole representative among the French harpsichordists, had been effectively removed by the time of the generation of François Couperin ‘Le Grand’.

15

ENGLISH

LOUIS COUPERIN AND THE FRENCH HARPSICHORD

It is generally thought that harpsichord playing and viol playing demand a rather light and graceful ‘touch’. But lightness is only one of many supplenesses of touch: in playing the harpsichord pieces of Louis Couperin or the viol works of Marin Marais, great power on the keyboard or the bow is absolutely essential. ‘Charm’ is not enough – we are dealing here with two musicians who clearly preferred virtuosity to preciosity. The harpsichord and the bass viol are both large and resonant instruments, and the power required in the hand is part of the ‘beautiful touch’. The essential concept to keep in mind is that it is not the keys or the bow which are actually being activated, but the strings. This variety of touch, skilfully exploited in order to produce varieties of energy, is referred to by the contemporaries of Couperin and Marais, and it is imperative to master all of them. Louis Couperin was perhaps first noticed in the twentieth century for his préludes, which are written in the genre that has become known as ‘unmeasured preludes’. This style certainly has some of its origins in the Italianate toccatas of Frescobaldi and Froberger, but perhaps more importantly in the seventeenth-century tradition of recitative with basso continuo. These pieces require lengthy preparation and very confident playing. Whether they represent ‘improvisation’ or not is a question that has frequently arisen. All notation is a mystery; and the notation of this period did not suffice to render the full range of musical expression, so that it was necessary to ‘improvise’ what is not written. Through the notation, the composer invites the interpreter to a close collaboration with him. 16

We have no information about the original source from which these two manuscripts were compiled, and indeed the composer in question is referred to only as ‘Couperin’. Believe it or not, we do not really know whether this Couperin is Louis or another contemporary member of the Couperin family. Louis Couperin was known as a viol player and organist: it was in fact his brother Charles who had an excellent reputation as a harpsichordist. To complicate the authorship/attribution issue further, the organ pieces which have become known as those of Louis Couperin have recently been published, and it has been suggested that the manuscript source of the latter works could be an autograph of the composer. From a text by Skip Sempé, 2004

ENGLISH

Louis Couperin’s harpsichord pieces were not printed in his lifetime. The largest sources of his surviving works are the Bauyn Manuscript (BNF, Paris) and the Parville Manuscript (University of California at Berkeley). Their texts vary sometimes very little, sometimes considerably, in the details of ornamentation and other elements. The manuscripts are transmitted in the hand of several unknown scribes, who also copied out music by Chambonnières, d’Anglebert, Frescobaldi, Froberger, Dumont, La Barre, Richard, Hardel and Lully.

„ STILISTISCH

GESEHEN STEHT LOUIS COUPERIN IN DER GROSSEN TRADITION DER CEMBALISTEN DES 17. JAHRHUNDERTS. “
