« IL A OUVERT LA VOIE À UNE AUTRE GÉNÉRATION DE VIOLONCELLISTES QUI S’ÉPANOUIRA DANS LES ANNÉES 1760-1780. »

On sait peu de choses sur le parcours de ce musicien né à Bordeaux le 2 mai 1707 et qui devint un virtuose du violoncelle à une époque où cet instrument supplantait inexorablement, et bientôt définitivement, la viole en France. Il ne fait aucun doute cependant que Jean Barrière avait commencé par étudier la viole, et il publiera du reste un recueil de sonates pour le pardessus de viole.

En 1731, on le retrouve à Paris, où il fait son entrée dans l’orchestre de l’Académie royale de musique, c’est-à-dire l’Opéra, au pupitre des basses. C’est d’ailleurs de ce titre de « musicien ordinaire de l’Académie royale de musique » qu’il se prévaut lorsqu’il demande un privilège royal de six années pour faire graver, imprimer et « donner au public plusieurs Sonates et autres ouvrages de musique instrumentale de sa composition », privilège qui lui est accordé par Louis XV le 22 octobre 1733.

Comme tous les musiciens, Barrière vit aussi des leçons qu’il dispense aux membres de la bonne société parisienne. Aussi, lorsqu’il publie en novembre 1733 son premier recueil destiné à son instrument favori, il n’hésite pas à le dédier à l’un de ses plus illustres élèves, le comte de Guergorlay. Cette première œuvre gravée remporte sans doute un beau succès commercial puisqu’elle sera réimprimée en 1740. L’édition de ce premier recueil de sonates pour le violoncelle est suivie par celle d’un second, sans doute en 1735, dédié « à Madame Jourdain ».

L’ART ET LA MANIÈRE DE MARIER GOÛT ITALIEN ET « TOUCHE » FRANÇAISE

Selon François-Joseph Fétis, qui publie à Paris, en 1860, la seconde édition de sa Biographie universelle des musiciens, Jean Barrière serait parti à Rome en 1736 afin d’aller se perfectionner auprès du virtuose italien Francesco Albarea. Il est de retour à Paris dès l’été 1738 puisqu’il se produit à deux reprises au célèbre Concert Spirituel : il y interprète avec succès des sonates pour violoncelle, ainsi que le rapporte le Mercure de France de septembre 1738, qui confirme, l’année suivante, son voyage en Italie par cette annonce : « Le Sieur Barrière, de retour d’ltalie à Paris, vient de faire graver son troisième livre de sonates pour le Violoncelle. » Ce Livre III porte encore le privilège de 1733, qui arrivait théoriquement à expiration le 22 octobre 1739. Jean Barrière fait une nouvelle demande de privilège, qui lui est octroyé par le roi le 26 décembre 1739.

Barrière publie, sans doute en 1740, son Livre IV des Sonates pour le Violoncelle, avec la Basse Continüe, qui, comme le troisième, ne comporte pas de dédicace. Sa réputation est désormais suffisamment forte pour qu’il puisse se passer d’écrire le nom d’une quelconque personnalité sur la couverture de ses ouvrages. Ce sera encore le cas avec les deux dernières publications, Sonates pour le Pardessus de Viole avec la Basse Continüe…, Livre Ve et Sonates et Pieces pour le Clavecin…, Livre VI. Jean Barrière meurt à Paris le 6 juin 1747 alors qu’il a atteint le sommet de son art.

Devenu le plus grand violoncelliste français de sa génération – la première véritable génération de violoncellistes français –, il a ouvert la voie à une autre génération de violoncellistes qui s’épanouira dans les années 1760-1780, celle des Tillière, Cupis, Rey, Nochez, Duport, Janson puis Bréval.

Les livres de sonates pour le violoncelle de Jean Barrière sont des témoignages uniques en France car leur publication s’échelonne de la fin de 1733 jusqu’au début de 1740, soit quatre recueils en sept années, chaque livre comptant six grandes sonates. La différence notable entre les œuvres de Jean Barrière et celles des autres compositeurs français est que sa musique n’est absolument pas représentative de la musique française tant elle subit l’influence italienne, même dans les deux premiers recueils écrits bien avant le séjour en Italie. On est même étonné de trouver, dans le Livre II par exemple, des passages évoquant nettement la musique de J. S. Bach alors que ce compositeur était complètement inconnu en France à cette époque.

Sur le plan technique, les sonates de Jean Barrière révèlent qu’il était un virtuose de son instrument puisqu’elles présentent tout un éventail de difficultés, aussi bien pour la main gauche que pour l’archet. Sur le plan formel, ces pièces sont écrites pour violoncelle et basse continue. Rien à voir, donc, avec les suites pour violoncelle de J. S. Bach, qui sont des suites de danses – aussi stylisées soient-elles –, la suite de danses étant une forme beaucoup plus ancienne et archaïque que la sonate pour soliste et basse continue. Cependant, on retrouve dans les sonates de Barrière des réminiscences de la suite instrumentale puisque certains mouvements de ces sonates sont des danses.

‘HE HAD BECOME THE GREATEST FRENCH CELLIST OF HIS GENERATION AND PAVED THE WAY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION THAT BLOSSOMED BETWEEN 1760 AND 1780.’

Little is known about the life and career of this musician born in Bordeaux on 2 May 1707, who became a virtuoso cellist at a time when the cello was gaining ground over the viol in France, and soon to replace it. The viol was nevertheless the first instrument he studied, and he later published a set of sonatas for pardessus de viole.

In 1731 Jean Barrière was in Paris, where he joined the orchestra of the Académie Royale de Musique (the Opéra) as a member of the bass section. And it was this title of ‘Musicien Ordinaire de l’Académie Royale de Musique’ that he claimed when he requested a six-year royal privilege to engrave, print and ‘place before the public several sonatas and other works of instrumental music of his composition’, which was duly granted by Louis XV on 22 October 1733.

Like all musicians, Barrière also gave lessons, which he dispensed to well-off members of Parisian society. So when he came to publish his first set of works for the cello in November 1733, he dedicated it to one of his most illustrious pupils, the Comte de Guergorlay. This First Book must have been a great success, for a second edition was published in 1740. Meanwhile he had issued a Second Book, probably in 1735, which was dedicated to ‘Madame Jourdain’.

THE ART OF ADDING A FRENCH TOUCH TO THE ITALIAN STYLE

According to François-Joseph Fétis, in the second edition of his Biographie universelle des musiciens (Paris: 1860), Barrière went to Rome in 1736 to study with the famous Italian cellist Francesco Albarea. He was in Paris again in summer 1738, for we know that he appeared twice at the famous Concert Spirituel, giving successful performances of his sonatas. This was reported by the Mercure de France of September 1738, which the following year confirmed his trip to Italy by announcing that ‘Monsieur Barrière, now returned to Paris from Italy, has just had his Third Book of sonatas for the violoncello engraved’. This Livre III still carried the privilege of 1733, which expired in principle on 22 October 1739. Barrière then requested a new privilege, granted by the King on 26 December 1739.

It was probably in 1740 that Barrière published his Livre IV des Sonates pour le Violoncelle, avec la Basse Continüe, which, like the Third, bore no dedication. His reputation was now such that he no longer needed the support of famous names to sell his music. This was again the case with his last two publications, the Sonates pour le Pardessus de Viole avec la Basse Continüe . . ., Livre Ve and Sonates et Pieces pour le Clavecin . . ., Livre VI. Jean Barrière died in Paris on 6 June 1747, at the height of his creativity. He had become the greatest French cellist of his generation – the first real generation of French cellists – and paved the way for the next generation that blossomed between 1760 and 1780, which included Tillière, Cupis, Rey, Nochez, Duport, Janson and Bréval.

From the technical point of view, the sonatas of Barrière show beyond all doubt that he was a virtuoso on his instrument. They feature a whole range of difficulties for both the left hand and the bowing hand. Where form is concerned, they are written for cello and basso continuo. Hence they bear no relation to Bach’s Solo Cello Suites, which are suites of dances, however stylised they may be – the dance suite being a much earlier and more archaic form than the sonata for soloist and continuo. But Barrière’s sonatas nevertheless contain reminiscences of the instrumental suite, in so far as some of the movements are dances.

Barrière’s books of cello sonatas provide a testimony that is unique in France, for their publication extended from late 1733 to early 1740, that is, four books in seven years, each of them containing six full-scale sonatas. The notable difference between his works and those of other French composers is that his music is absolutely unrepresentative of the French style, because it is so heavily influenced by the Italian idiom, even in the first two books, written well before his stay in Italy. There are even passages – in Book II, for example – that bring to mind the music of J. S. Bach, who was completely unknown in France at that time!

Über den Werdegang dieses am 2. Mai 1707 in Bordeaux geborenen Musikers wissen wir nicht viel. Virtuose auf dem Violoncello wurde er in einer Zeit, als dieses Instrument in Frankreich unerbittlich und bald schon endgültig die Viola verdrängte, das mit Sicherheit erste Instrument, das Jean Barrière zu spielen lernte; er veröffentlichte übrigens eine Sammlung von Sonaten für Pardessus de viole.

1731 begegnen wir ihm in Paris, wo er in das Orchester der „Académie royale de musique“, das heißt der Oper, aufgenommen wird, um die Bassinstrumente zu verstärken. Als „Titularmusiker“ der Königlichen Oper erhält er am 22. Oktober von Ludwig XV. das Privileg, sechs Jahre lang „Sonaten und andere selbstkomponierte Werke für Instrumentalmusik“ stechen, drucken und veröffentlichen zu dürfen.

Wie alle Musiker lebt Barrière auch von dem Unterricht, den er Angehörigen der guten Pariser Gesellschaft erteilt. Als er im November 1733 die erste Sammlung von Kompositionen für sein Lieblingsinstrument veröffentlicht, zögert er nicht, sie einem seiner berühmtesten Schüler, dem Grafen Guergorlay, zu widmen. Diese erste Sammlung verkauft sich anscheinend gut, denn sie wird 1740 neu aufgelegt. Der 19

François-Joseph Fétis teilt in der 1860 veröffentlichten zweiten Auflage seine Biographie universelle des musiciens mit, Jean Barrière habe sich 1736 nach Rom begeben, um sich bei dem italienischen Virtuosen Francesco Albarea in seiner Kunst zu vervollkommnen. Seit dem Sommer 1738 muss er zurückgekehrt sein, denn er tritt zweimal bei dem berühmten Concert Spirituel auf. Dies jedenfalls berichtet im September 1738 der Mercure de France, der in einer im folgenden Jahr erscheinenden Mitteilung auch seine Italienreise bestätigt: „Aus Italien nach Paris zurückgekehrt, hat Herr Barrière soeben sein drittes Sonatenbuch für Violoncello stechen lassen.“ Dieses Livre III erscheint noch mit dem königlichen Privileg von 1733, das theoretisch bis zum 22. Oktober 1739 gilt. Als Jean Barrière erneut um ein Privileg ersucht, wird es ihm am 26. Dezember 1739 vom König erteilt.

Vermutlich im Jahr 1740 veröffentlicht Jean Barrière sein Livre IV des Sonates pour Violoncello, avec la Basse Continüe, das (wie schon das dritte) keine Widmung trägt: Sein Ruf ist inzwischen derart gefestigt, dass er es sich sparen kann, den Namen irgendeiner bekannten Persönlichkeit auf das Titelblatt zu setzen. Dies gilt auch für seine letzten beiden Sammlungen, die Sonates pour le Pardessus de Viole avec la Basse Continüe…, Livre Ve, und die Sonates et Pieces pour le Clavecin…, Livre VI. Jean Barrière stirbt am 6. Juin 1747 auf dem Gipfel seiner Kunst. Als größter Violoncellist seiner Generation – der ersten wahren Generation französischer Cellisten – hat

Ihr Erscheinen zwischen 1733 und 1740 – vier Bücher in sieben Jahren, wobei jedes Buch sechs große Sonaten enthält – macht die Cellosonaten von Jean Barrière zu einzigartigen Zeugnissen. Zwischen Barrières Werken und denen anderer französischer Komponisten besteht ein beachtlicher Unterschied: Seine Musik ist derart von italienischem Einfluss geprägt, dass sie für die französische Musik absolut nicht repräsentativ ist; dies gilt auch für die beiden ersten Sammlungen, die lange vor dem Italienaufenthalt entstanden sind. Verblüffenderweise finden sich, beispielsweise in Livre II, Passagen, die deutlich an die Musik von J. S. Bach anklingen, obwohl er in Frankreich zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch gänzlich unbekannt ist.

Technisch gesehen zeigen die Sonaten Jean Barrière als Virtuosen seines Instruments, denn sowohl für die linke Hand wie für den Bogen enthalten sie eine breite Palette an Schwierigkeiten. Formal gesehen sind diese Stücke für Violoncello und Basso continuo geschrieben, sie haben also nicht mit Bachs Cellosuiten zu tun, die letztlich Tanzsuiten sind (wenn auch in sehr stilisierter Form); die Tanzsuite aber ist eine sehr viel ältere und archaischere Form als die der Sonate für Soloinstrument und Basso continuo.

Reminiszenzen an die Instrumentalsuite finden sich allerdings in Barrières Sonaten: Einige Sätze dieser Sonaten sind Tänze.
