SONORITÉ Venezia Stravagantissima est le premier enregistrement du Capriccio Stravagante Renaissance Orchestra. L’ensemble a créé une sonorité opulente, prodigieuse, qui n’avait jamais été entendue jusque-là – un son nouveau allié à une finesse d’expression que nous développions continuellement depuis quinze ans. Notre système est relativement simple : si l’on réunit un ensemble de bons musiciens, leur interprétation sera le fruit d’une perspective inattendue et inspirée.

La surprise qu’a provoquée l’effet sonore de Venezia Stravagantissima n’est pas sans ressembler à celle des premiers enregistrements des Concertos brandebourgeois ou des Ouvertures de Bach par Nikolaus Harnoncourt dans les années 1960 – mais avec l’instrumentation et l’expression d’un orchestre Renaissance. Comme j’ai toujours été considéré à la fois comme un pionnier et un traditionnaliste, nous avons continué avec l’orchestre Renaissance, auquel nous avons ajouté du répertoire avec voix solistes et chœurs. Cela nous a permis de donner en concert et d’enregistrer les intermèdes de La Pellegrina de 1589 et Terpsichore: Muse of the Dance.

Venise a produit une grande quantité de belle musique, et ce dès les premières années du XVIe siècle. Elle était l’un des plus grands centres européens d’édition musicale en même temps qu’un foyer actif et célèbre de facture instrumentale. La sonorité « cuivrée » particulière à Venise, avec ses grandes et magistrales exécutions aux cornets et saqueboutes, resta gravée dans la mémoire de tous ceux qui en furent témoins, musiciens comme auditeurs. Les grandioses cérémonies séculières ou religieuses, les grandes réunions privées, les nombreux musiciens, les doubles chœurs, la polyphonie à douze voix : tout cela était autant de caractéristiques vénitiennes.

RENAISSANCE La musique de danse forme une part importante du répertoire Renaissance et baroque. Ce qui est innovant dans une interprétation réussie de musique de danse est le contraste entre régularité et 9

irrégularité du rythme et du geste. Pour faire ressortir la surprise et le brillant de cette musique, il faut à la fois des phrasés et des gestes prévus et improvisés. L’élément improvisé est un constant encouragement aux libertés interprétatives. « Per ogni sorte d’instrumenti... » J’ai toujours été intéressé par le comportement des instruments de musique acoustiques et, ayant été formé comme joueur de flûte à bec, j'ai été conduit à faire de nombreuses recherches sur l'ornementation des musiques conçues pour instruments mélodiques dans ce répertoire soliste particulier. En réalité, la plupart des instruments que l’on qualifie aujourd’hui de « baroques » sont des inventions de la Renaissance : violons, violes de gambe, luths, flûtes à bec, cornets, saqueboutes, orgues, clavecins.

Il est évident que cette inventivité donnait aux compositeurs une inspiration qui à son tour suscitait des techniques de composition et des styles d’interprétation. Autrement dit, l’invention d’un instrument déterminait la manière dont on écrivait pour lui. À eux seuls ou presque, les instruments ont hissé la musique instrumentale et son exécution à un niveau inédit de distinction. On a pratiquement oublié que c’est précisément la raison pour laquelle le mouvement de renouveau de la musique ancienne est né.

Mon intérêt pour la musique de la Renaissance vient pour une grande part d’avoir joué le répertoire pour clavecin seul du Fitzwilliam Virginal Book : Byrd, Bull, Gibbons, Tomkins – et leurs pavanes, gaillardes, passamezzos, allemandes, fantaisies, In nomine… Mais en réalité, j’ai toujours été intéressé autant par le jeu d’ensemble de haut niveau que par le clavecin de haut niveau.

MUSIQUE ANCIENNE Ma tendance naturelle – et je dirais même ma formation – m’incite à préférer les exécutions – les miennes et celles des autres – dans lesquelles le concept interprétatif de base suppose la connaissance et l’expérience pratique d’un répertoire où « la manière dont on l’exécute compte plus que la composition elle-même ». C’est ce qu'écrit Leopold Mozart à sa femme dans une lettre envoyée de Rome le 14 avril 1770 décrivant une exécution à la chapelle Sixtine du Miserere d’Allegri qu’il 10

entendit en compagnie de Wolfgang. Cette même tendance fait que mon affection et mon intérêt pour la musique et mes collègues sont fondés bien plus sur la musique elle-même que sur la vente de concerts et de disques. Pour moi, cette attitude est essentielle, à deux titres : parce qu’elle a toujours été essentielle et parce qu’elle est pratiquement oubliée depuis quelques décennies, au nom du « succès commercial ».

Capriccio Stravagante et moi-même faisons partie d’une histoire de l’interprétation relativement récente qui a contribué à la découverte de compositeurs méconnus, d’œuvres méconnues et de traditions interprétatives méconnues – une démarche résolument en dehors des sentiers battus –, alors que le monde s’est remis aussitôt à préférer le répertoire peu aventureux de Haendel et Vivaldi, même si ces choix de répertoire ne sont pas le fait du public mais des organisateurs de concerts.

Nous sommes convaincus que la préservation de la tradition est la plus grande forme d’art contemporaine. Cela vaut à la fois pour l’interprétation et l’enseignement. Alors quand il est question d’aller de l’avant et de regarder vers l’avenir, ne l’oublions pas.

En outre, pour commenter ce qui se passe aujourd’hui – et ce qui se passera demain –, il faut en savoir beaucoup sur hier. Cette notion recouvre non seulement l’histoire de la musique en général mais aussi l’histoire de l’interprétation au XXe siècle et les traditions interprétatives dont témoignent l’enseignement, les concerts et les enregistrements. Cette connaissance intime sert à bâtir une grande et forte conviction interprétative.

Au début des années 1970, en deçà du répertoire pour clavecin seul, je vivais directement dans le monde sonore de Machaut, Dufay, Landini, Ciconia, des harpes, organettos, clavicordes « Arnault de Zwolle », cromornes... Et je vivais « virtuellement » avec les enregistrements du Studio der Frühen Musik d’Andrea von Ramm et Thomas Binkley, avec le Early Music Consort of London de David Munrow, avec Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen et Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Dans le monde de la musique ancienne, nous n’abordons pas en réalité les questions de l’« interprétation historiquement informée » ou de la lecture des traités. Pour l’avenir du répertoire de la musique ancienne, nous avons pratiquement perdu la tradition des grands pionniers, historiens de la musique et musicologues qui étaient aussi des interprètes de renommée mondiale.

Ces interprètes avaient le don de retrouver les messages cachés. Il est dangereux d’ignorer ou même de rejeter les réalisations de nos ancêtres, puis de rester en deçà.

La force interprétative se fonde sur le décryptage de ces messages cachés. Ces messages peuvent tout englober, de la détection d’un cantus firmus ou d’un sujet de fugue aux plus importants secrets et techniques de l’expression musicale universelle. Au moment présent, une chose est claire : seuls ceux qui savent ce qui a été perdu peuvent tenter de le retrouver.

EUROPE Quand je suis arrivé en Europe en 1980, il ne se passait pas grand-chose aux États-Unis dans le domaine de la musique ancienne, à l’exception des efforts des véritables pionniers américains. Je voulais être en Europe pour étudier avec Gustav Leonhardt (et l’entendre jouer du clavecin et des orgues historiques) et pour rencontrer le facteur de clavecins Martin Skowroneck – et partir de là en étudiant les répertoires, les traditions, les clavecins l’un après l’autre. Après trois années passées à Amsterdam, je me suis installé à Paris avec l’idée de former un ensemble voué à la musique de chambre instrumentale : Capriccio Stravagante. C’était il y a trente ans. En 1986, pas un seul ensemble français ne se concentrait sur le répertoire de chambre purement instrumental.

En 2000, cette situation avait évolué. Pour les concerts et les enregistrements, les orchestres baroques occupaient une place de choix parmi les ensembles dévolus à la musique ancienne.

Bien que le public du monde entier soit extrêmement enthousiaste pour cette musique, il manque toujours, pourtant indispensables, des concerts raffinés et exemplaires du grand répertoire vocal et instrumental de la Renaissance.

AUJOURD’HUI Au cours des trente dernières années, l’essentiel de ce qui a changé est tout simplement générationnel, parmi les musiciens eux-mêmes. Parfois il faut préserver ce pour quoi l’on a travaillé ; parfois il faut prendre le risque de céder à quelque chose que l’on peut vouloir ou non, sachant que toute interprétation est essentiellement expérimentale et temporaire par nature.

Nous avons redécouvert une extraordinaire sonorité orchestrale Renaissance que l’on n’avait jamais entendue à notre époque. Elle a été rendue possible non pas par la décision de jouer sur instruments d’époque mais plutôt par la réunion d’extraordinaires virtuoses qui jouent avec une entière liberté d’expression et une spontanéité instrumentale revigorante, encouragés par le fait qu’ils n’ont pas peur du chef.

Il faut se rappeler que lorsque l’on s’offre sur le marché des concerts ou des disques, l’ambition de cet exercice est de donner une interprétation qui soit aussi compétente – ou encore plus convaincante – que tout ce qui a été entendu auparavant, ou peut-être que tout ce qui est proposé actuellement. C’est un peu un défi mais un enregistrement comme Venezia Stravagantissima est déjà considéré comme une référence historique dans ce répertoire, bien qu’il ne date que de quinze ans. Tempus fugit.

‘We reDiSCoVereD an eXtraorDinarY renaiSSanCe orCheStraL SoUnD’ SKIP SEMPÉ

Venezia Stravagantissima was the first recording of the Capriccio Stravagante Renaissance Orchestra. The ensemble created an opulent, almost overwhelming sound that had never been heard before. We managed to create a pioneering sound, combined with a finesse of expression that we had been continuously developing for fifteen years. Our system is relatively simple: create an assembly of fine musicians, and the interpretation will be the result of an unexpected and inspiring perspective.

The surprise of Venezia Stravagantissima’s sonic effect was rather similar to that of Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s first recordings of the Bach Brandenburg Concertos or Bach Ouvertures from the 1960s – but with the instrumentation and resulting expression of a Renaissance orchestra, rather than a Baroque one.

Since I have always been considered to be both a pioneer and a traditionalist, we have continued with the Renaissance Orchestra, to which we have added repertoire with vocal soloists and choirs.

This provided the resources for our concert performances and recordings of the La Pellegrina Intermedi from 1589 and Terpsichore: Muse of the Dance.

Venice produced a large quantity of fine music, and from the very first years of the sixteenth century was also one of the greatest European centres for music printing. By the mid-sixteenth century, Venice was an active and celebrated centre for musical instrument making. The particular Venetian ‘brass’ sound produced great, masterful performances on the cornetts and sackbuts that were memorable to all who witnessed them, performers and audiences alike. Grand state or religious events, great private gatherings, lots of musicians, double choirs, polyphony in twelve parts: all such festivities were Venetian trademarks.

SOUND

RENAISSANCE Dance music forms an important part of the Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. What is innovative in an effective performance of dance music is the contrast between regularity and irregularity of rhythm and of gesture. Bringing out the surprise and brilliance of dance music depends on both planned and improvised phrasings and gestures. The improvised element provides constant encouragement for interpretive liberties. ‘Per ogni sorte d’instrumenti’ . . . I have always been interested in the behaviour of acoustic musical instruments, and since I was also trained as a recorder player, this particular solo repertoire has led me to do a lot of research on the embellishment of music that was conceived for melody instruments.

In fact, most musical instruments now referred to as ‘Baroque’ were inventions of the Renaissance: violins, violas da gamba, lutes, recorders, cornetts, sackbuts, organs, harpsichords . . . It is quite clear that the invention of musical instruments provided composers with inspiration that in turn created certain compositional techniques and performance styles. In other words, the invention of a musical instrument determined the manner of writing music for it. Almost singlehandedly, the musical instruments themselves brought both instrumental music and performance to a new level of distinction. We have almost forgotten that this is the exact reason why the ‘early music’ movement was initiated.

Much of my interest in Renaissance music comes from playing the solo harpsichord repertoire of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book: Byrd, Bull, Gibbons, Tomkins – and these composers’ Pavans, Galliards, Passamezzos, Almans, Fantazias, In Nomines . . . But, in fact, I was always as interested in high-level ensemble performances as in high-level harpsichord playing.

I have a natural tendency, and would even say training, to favour musical performances – both my own and those of others – in which the basic interpretive concept implies knowledge and performing experience of repertoire in which ‘the manner of the performance contributes more to the effect than the composition itself’, as Leopold Mozart wrote to his wife from Rome on 14 April 1770, describing a Sistine Chapel performance of the Allegri Miserere that he heard in the company of Wolfgang. This same tendency has ensured that my love and interest in music and in my colleagues is based considerably more on the music itself than it is based on selling concerts and recordings. For me, this attitude is essential, for two reasons: it has always been essential, and because it has become all but forgotten over the last several decades, in the name of ‘commercial success’.

Capriccio Stravagante and I belong to a fairly recent part of performance history that contributed to the discovery of unknown composers, unknown works and unknown performance traditions, an idea which is violently ‘anti-mainstream’ – though now the world has gone right back to favouring the unadventurous repertoire of Handel and Vivaldi . . . Of course, these repertoire decisions are not made by the public, they are made by concert promoters.

We hold to the idea that the preservation of tradition is the greatest contemporary art form. This holds for both performance and teaching. So, when we are talking about ‘getting with it’ and ‘looking to the future’, let’s not forget this.

In addition, in order to comment on today – and tomorrow – one has to know a lot about yesterday.

This concept involves not only the history of music in general, but also includes the history of twentieth-century interpretation and performance traditions as shown in the media of training, live concerts and recordings. This intimate knowledge serves to build great interpretive strength and conviction.

EARLY MUSIC

In the early 1970s, along with the solo harpsichord repertoire, I lived ‘hands on’ in the sound world of Machaut, Dufay, Landini, Ciconia, of harps, organettos, ‘Arnault de Zwolle’ clavichords, crumhorns . . . And lived ‘virtually’ with the recordings of the Studio der Frühen Musik with Andrea von Ramm and Thomas Binkley, the Early Music Consort of London with David Munrow, and Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

In the ‘early music’ world, we are actually not dealing with issues of ‘Historically Informed Performance’ or ‘reading treatises’. What we have all but lost for the future of the ‘early music’ repertoire is the tradition of the great pioneers, music historians/musicologists who are also worldrenowned performers. These key performers had a talent for searching out ‘hidden messages’. It is dangerous to ignore, or even dismiss the achievements of our ancestors, then fall short of them.

Interpretive power is based on the decryption of these ‘hidden messages’. These messages can include everything from the simple detection of a cantus firmus or fugue subject to the most important secrets and techniques of universal musical expression. At this point in time, one thing is clear: only those who know what has been lost can attempt to bring it back.

EUROPE When I moved to Europe in 1980, there was not very much going on in the United States in the field of ‘early music’, excepting the efforts of the real American pioneers. I wanted to be in Europe to study with Gustav Leonhardt (and to hear him play the harpsichord and historical organs) and to meet the harpsichord maker Martin Skowroneck – and then go from there, studying repertoire after repertoire, harpsichord after harpsichord, tradition after tradition. After three years in Amsterdam, I moved to Paris with the idea of creating an ensemble dedicated to instrumental chamber music: Capriccio Stravagante. That was thirty years ago. In 1986, there was not a single French ensemble concentrating on purely instrumental chamber repertoire.

By 2000, this situation had changed. For both concerts and recordings, ‘Baroque orchestras’ had taken pride of place in the world of ‘early music’ ensembles. Despite the fact that audiences around the world are wildly enthusiastic about this music, what is still missing, and necessary, is polished, exemplary concert performances of the great Renaissance vocal and instrumental repertoire.

TODAY In the last thirty years, most of what has changed is quite simply generational, amongst the musicians themselves. Sometimes you have to preserve what you have worked for, and other times you have to take the risk of giving in to something that you may or may not want, knowing that all interpretation is essentially experimental and temporary by nature.

We rediscovered an extraordinary Renaissance orchestral sound that had not yet been heard in our time. It was made possible not by the decision to perform on ‘period instruments,’ but rather by an assembly of extraordinary virtuosos who play with complete freedom of musical expression and invigorating instrumental abandon, encouraged by the fact that they are not afraid of the ‘conductor’.

One has to remember that when one offers oneself to the ‘marketplace’ of concerts or recordings, the ambition of this exercise is to provide an interpretation that is as competent as – or even more compelling than – anything heard before, or maybe even anything that is being currently offered.

This is something of a challenge, but in some isolated instances, a recording such as Venezia Stravagantissima is already considered to be an historic, reference recording of this repertoire, though it was only recorded fifteen years ago. Tempus fugit.

Venezia Stravagantissima war die erste Aufnahme des Capriccio Stravagante Renaissance Orchestra. Das Ensemble hat einen opulenten, wundervollen Klang geschaffen, wie er bislang nicht zu hören war – einen neuen Klang, verbunden mit einer Subtilität des Ausdrucks, die wir seit fünfzehn Jahren kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt haben. Unsere Methode ist recht einfach: wenn man ein Ensemble von guten Musikern zusammenbringt, wird ihre Interpretation das Ergebnis einer unerwarteten, tief inspirierten Sicht sein.

Die Überraschung, die der Klang von Venezia Stravagantissima auslöste, ähnelt in gewisser Hinsicht derjenigen, die in den 1960er Jahren von Nikolaus Harnoncourts ersten Aufnahmen der Brandenburgischen Konzerte oder der Ouvertüren von Bach ausging – aber mit der Instrumentierung und dem Ausdruck eines Renaissance-Orchesters. Da ich immer schon als Pionier und Traditionalist zugleich galt, haben wir mit dem Renaissance-Orchester weitergearbeitet, uns aber auch ein Repertoire mit Solostimmen und Chor zugelegt. Das hat uns ermöglicht, in Konzerten und Aufnahmen die Intermedii aus La Pellegrina (1589) und Terpsichore, Muse of the Dance zu spielen.

Venedig hat sehr viel schöne Musik hervorgebracht, und das seit den ersten Jahren des 16. Jahrhunderts. Es war eines der führenden Zentren der europäischen Musikverlage und gleichzeitig bekannt und berühmt für seine Instrumentenbauer. Der besondere, „kupferne“ Klang, der in Venedig zu hören war, die großen, meisterhaften Aufführungen mit Zinken und Posaunen blieb allen in Erinnerung, Interpreten wie Zuhörern. Die großen religiösen und nichtreligiösen Zeremonien, die großen Privatveranstaltungen, die zahlreichen Musiker, die Doppelchöre, die zwölfstimmige Polyphonie – all das waren venezianische Besonderheiten.

KLANG

Ich neige von Natur aus – und wohl auch von meiner Ausbildung her – zu Interpretationen (von mir selbst wie von anderen), deren Grundkonzept das Wissen um und praktische Erfahrung mit einem Repertoire darstellt, bei dem „die Art der production muß mehr dabeÿ thun, als die Komposition selbst“, wie es in einem Brief heißt, den Leopold Mozart anlässlich einer Aufführung von Allegris Miserere, der er mit Wolfgang Amadeus in der Sixtinischen Kapelle beigewohnt hatte, am 14. April 1770 aus Rom an seine Frau schrieb. Daraus folgt auch, dass, was die Musik und meine Kollegen angeht, meine Zuneigung und mein Interesse mehr auf das Musizieren selbst ausgerichtet ist als auf den Verkaufserfolg der Konzerte und Schallplatten. Für mich ist diese Einstellung aus zwei Gründen wesentlich: weil sie mir immer am Herzen lag und weil sie in den letzten Jahrzehnte zugunsten des „finanziellen Erfolgs“ praktisch in den Hintergrund trat. Capriccio Stravagante und ich selbst gehören einer relativ rezenten Interpretationsgeschichte an, die zur Entdeckung verkannter Komponisten, verkannter Werke und verkannter Interpretationsmethoden beigetragen hat – wir haben damit die ausgetretenen Pfade entschieden hinter uns gelassen –, während um uns herum durchweg das nicht sehr abenteuerliche Repertoire von Händel und Vivaldi vorgezogen wurde, obwohl diese Entscheidungen nicht vom Publikum, sondern von den Konzertveranstaltern ausgingen.

Wir sind überzeugt davon, dass die größte Form zeitgenössischer Kunst die Erhaltung der Tradition darstellt. Das gilt für die Interpretation wie auch für den Unterricht. Vergessen wir das nicht, wenn es darum geht, nach vorne zu blicken und die Zukunft anzupacken. Und außerdem: Wenn man beurteilen will, was heute geschieht, muss man gut darüber Bescheid wissen, was gestern war.

Das betrifft nicht nur die Geschichte der Musik im allgemeinen, sondern auch die der Interpretation im 20. Jahrhundert und die Interpretationstraditionen, von denen der Unterricht, die Konzerte und die Aufnahmen zeugen. Diese präzise Kenntnis dient dazu, dient dem Aufbau einer starken Interpretationskompetenz.

ALTE MUSIK

Zu Beginn der 1970er Jahre lebte ich, abgesehen von dem Repertoire für Solocembalo, völlig in der Welt von Machaut, Dufay, Landini, Ciconia, in der Welt der Harfen, der Organetti, der Clavicorde des Arnaut de Zwolle, der Krummhörner… Und ich lebte „virtuell“ mit den Aufnahmen Andrea von Ramms und Thomas Binkleys mit ihrem Studio der Frühen Musik, mit David Munrows Londoner Early Music Consort, mit Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen und Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

In der Welt der Alten Musik gehen wir in Wirklichkeit nicht von der „historisch informierten Interpretation“ oder der Lektüre der Traktate aus. Was das Repertoire der Alten Musik angeht, so haben wir die Tradition der großen Pioniere, der Musikhistoriker und Musikologen, die auch Interpreten von Weltruf waren, praktisch verloren. Diese Interpreten hatten die Gabe, verborgene Botschaften aufzufinden. Es ist gefährlich, die Errungenschaften unserer Vorläufer zu ignorieren oder sogar zu verwerfen, um dann hinter ihnen zurückzubleiben.

Gute Interpretationen beruhen auf der Entdeckung solcher versteckter Botschaften. Diese Botschaften können alles mögliche einschließen, von einem verborgenen cantus firmus oder einem Fugenthema bis hin zu den verstecktesten Geheimnissen und Techniken des universellen musikalischen Ausdrucks. Eines ist heute klar: Nur wer weiß, was verloren gegangen ist, kann versuchen es wiederzufinden.

EUROPA Als ich 1980 nach Europa kam, tat sich in den Vereinigten Staaten nicht viel auf dem Gebiet der Alten Musik, von den Anstrengungen der echten amerikanischen Pioniere einmal abgesehen. Ich wollte in Europa sein, um bei Gustav Leonhardt zu studieren (und ihn auf dem Cembalo und auf historischen Orgeln spielen zu hören) und um dem Cembalobauer Martin Skowroneck zu begegnen – und ausgehend davon das Repertoire, die Traditionen, die Cembalos eines nach dem anderen zu studieren. Nach drei Jahren in Amsterdam habe ich mich in Paris niedergelassen mit der Vorstellung, ein Ensemble für instrumentale Kammermusik zu gründen: das Capriccio Stravagante. Das 28

war vor dreißig Jahren. 1986 gab es kein französisches Ensemble, das sich allein auf das Repertoire für instrumentale Kammermusik konzentrierte.

Im Jahr 2000 hatte sich diese Situation weiterentwickelt. Bei Konzerten und Einspielungen nahmen die Barockorchester unter den Ensembles für Alte Musik die führende Stellung ein. Obwohl das Publikum sich weltweit für diese Musik außerordentlich begeisterte, fehlt es immer noch an hochwertigen und beispielhaften Konzerten des großen Repertoires für Stimme und Instrumente aus der Renaissance – und das ist wahrhaft ein Manko.

HEUTE Was sich im Verlauf der letzten dreißig Jahre geändert hat, sind im wesentlichen die Generationen der Musiker. Manchmal muss man konservieren, wofür man gearbeitet hat; manchmal das Risiko eingehen sich im Bewusstsein dessen, dass jede Interpretation von Natur aus im wesentlichen experimentell und vorläufig ist, auf etwas einzulassen, das man wollen kann oder auch nicht.

Wir haben eine für die damalige Zeit unerhörte Klangfülle der Renaissanceorchester wiederentdeckt. Sie war nicht durch die Entscheidung möglich geworden, auf historischen Instrumenten zu spielen, sondern eher durch das Zusammenkommen außerordentlicher Virtuosen, die ihre Instrumente mit einer völligen Freiheit im Ausdruck und einer erfrischenden Spontaneität spielen, weil sie vor ihrem Dirigenten keine Angst haben.

Erinnern wir uns daran, dass man sich auf den Konzert- oder Schallplattenmarkt begibt mit dem Ehrgeiz, eine Interpretation zu liefern, die ebenso kompetent – oder noch überzeugender – ist als das, was bisher zu hören war, oder vielleicht als alles, was zur Zeit angeboten wird. Das ist wohl eine Herausforderung, aber Venezia Stravagantissima gilt jetzt schon als historische Referenz, obwohl die Aufnahme erst fünfzehn Jahre alt ist. Tempus fugit.
