L’enregistrement était trop long !
RAMEAU Rameau became part of my life as a ‘prentice harpsichordist’ fairly early on, because some of his pieces were written for teaching purposes and are really aimed at beginners. He was part of the staple diet of composers I was taught at the Marseille Conservatoire, along with Bach, Couperin and Scarlatti. Later, and especially while I was studying at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, I discovered a repertory I was less familiar with: the English Virginalists, the German, French and Italian composers of the seventeenth century. At the time when I was preparing this recording, I had hardly ever played Rameau’s harpsichord pieces since those student days. Since then I’ve always been happy to come back to this music in concert, as when you’re reunited with an old friend you don’t see every day. In that sense, my relationship with the music of Rameau is rather different from my relationship with Bach. I’m also very fond of performing Rameau with Café Zimmermann, even though our ensemble is less identified with French music. We’ve already done live performances of the Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts; it’s music we greatly enjoy playing. And I’d be very glad to have the opportunity to take 15

It’s true that I have an almost unconditional love for the music of Bach, which I play much more than that of any other composer. All the same, French harpsichord music has always been a fairly prominent feature of my musical sensibility. I say prominent because I played a lot of it during my studies and I always come back to it with immense pleasure. A few years back I had recorded a disc of music by Jean-Henry d’Anglebert; Rameau was the second French composer I tackled on record. Saying this, I now realise that d’Anglebert, Rameau and Bach were the three composers on the programme of my final diploma recital in Basel – I played d’Anglebert’s Suite in G minor, the fourth concert from Rameau’s Pièces de clavecin en Concerts and Bach’s Partita no.4!

part in a production of a Rameau opera some day. We’re fascinated by the highly individual colours of Rameau’s orchestra; it would be really exciting to work on one of his operas.
LEARNING As with many composers of keyboard music, Rameau’s project in writing his harpsichord pieces also had a pedagogical dimension, because he was addressing contemporary amateur musicians. That’s why he included a short treatise entitled De la Méchanique des doigts (On fingering technique) in his second book of Pièces de clavessin and provided a lengthy explanation of his bold harmonies and the new way he was writing for the instrument in the preface to the Nouvelles Suites de Pièces de clavecin. Throughout his life Rameau devoted himself to research, which he published, on the perception of music, on harmony and on keyboard music. He was a man of learning who never dissociated reflection on his art from composition itself. I’d like to quote what Philippe Beaussant, who wrote the booklet article for the original release of this recording, has to say about L’Enharmonique, that fine piece in the third book: ‘L’Enharmonique will reveal one of Rameau’s secrets to us: the point of intersection between the “man of learning”, the poet and the man of feeling . . . Rameau the theorist is here, and perfectly conscious of what he is doing. He described the device himself. But this theoretical problem is metamorphosed into a piece whose unstable harmony, constantly altered by unpredictable chromaticisms, draws us into a nagging melancholy.’ And, speaking of L’Enharmonique, I can tell you a little anecdote: I made this Rameau disc on a marvellous Hemsch harpsichord of 1751 which, according to all the information we have, was very probably played by Rameau himself. The instrument possesses such rich harmonics that it influenced the way I played in the recording sessions. But I only realised that when the disc was being edited and the producer Aline Blondiau informed me that the recording was too long! I was flabbergasted, because I had timed the programme on several occasions in the months before the

recording. We had ten minutes of music we couldn’t fit onto the disc! I realised that the harpsichord had such a powerful resonance that it had prompted me to change the tempo of some of the pieces, such as the unmeasured prelude and L’Enharmonique. The latter lasted more than eleven minutes, yet I didn’t think it was slow . . . We had to cut some of the repeats, unfortunately including the second one in L’Enharmonique.
BOOKS I decided to select this programme from the pieces in the three harpsichord books published during Rameau’s lifetime. His Premier Livre dates from 1706 – shortly before Couperin’s first. The second book was published in 1724, the third in 1728. You can observe a marked evolution between the Suite in A of the first book, more conventional with its unmeasured prelude followed by the standard dance movements, and the pieces of the Suite in G from the third book, which place descriptive character pieces like La Poule alongside dances (minuets). Even the titles are no longer names of dances – we now have Les Tricotets, L’Indifférente, Les Triolets, Les Sauvages and L’Égyptienne. Philippe Beaussant, once again, gave a very good description of the characteristics of each book. 17

He writes of the first book: ‘Its structure is very traditional, with prelude, allemande, courante, gigue, sarabandes, vénitienne, gavotte and minuet succeeding one another. This follows in the tradition of Chambonnières and Louis Marchand. And yet, from within, Rameau changes the situation completely through his harmonic learning. . . . Such is Rameau. Already, at the age of twenty-three, he is revolutionising things, but always from within. We shall discover this in every piece.’ In the second book: ‘Rameau has matured: so much may be heard right from the first moments of the Allemande. It is still the distant descendant of that venerable dance, but it transfigures the old solemnity with admirable melodic invention of great thematic unity . . . Couperin has already passed this way: and now Rameau, for the first time, detaches himself from the old structure of the suite with an evocative, if not descriptive piece – in any case, a “genre” piece.’ ‘With the Nouvelles Suites de Pièces de clavecin of 1728, he has crossed the threshold once and for all: aside from the minuet, there is no further trace of the dance. Each piece takes its title from its genre, from what it evokes or what it forms.’

It’s a very marked characteristic of Baroque music, and especially of Baroque art, to juxtapose contrasting pieces in order to build up a whole. The form of the dance suite is no exception to this rule, and alternates slow dances, intimate or majestic, with fast ones. In the case of character pieces, the principle is the same. So, as a performer, one tries to identify the type or the character of each piece in order to underline it by means of different choices – tempo, articulation or type of registration. Then, as one continues to think about it and the interpretation matures, links and balances between the pieces emerge. And that’s how each of them takes its place in the suite.

FRANÇAIS 25
