ENGLISH

CHOICES We harpsichordists are very odd people: we worship our instrument, its quills, its strings, its keys, but we’re constantly trying to make it sound like something else! The mellowness of the flute, the length of bow and dynamics of the violin, the consonants and vowels of singers, the regular measures of dancers, and of course the profundity and gravity of the viola da gamba. For instance, these pieces by Forqueray, originally written for the viola da gamba – the instrument on which he was a peerless virtuoso from a very early age – are an absolute delight on the harpsichord. The low tessitura in which they move – since they were transcribed without being transposed any higher – is precisely the range in which the French harpsichord of the eighteenth century possesses the greatest richness and fullness. If you sit up close to it, in the hollow of the instrument, or at the manuals with the lid flap open, you’re immediately invaded by sound, enveloped in sound. That’s what one experiences with these superb pieces by Forqueray. Here we’re not talking about brilliance but about mellowness, resonance, matter, in both the stormy pieces and the more tender ones. I wanted to make this complete Forqueray recording in 2007 as a sort of homage to sound.

CÉLINE FRISCH & PABLO VALETTI INTENSITY
Whether these pieces are in fact by Antoine, the father, or Jean-Baptiste, the son, which remains fairly unclear, one has the impression that they have only one aim: not to spare either the performer or the listener. It seems that to play them or listen to them demands a special intensity. They never loosen their grip: emotions are heightened, you have to plunge into them and let yourself be disconcerted.

The calm is agonising, because it foreshadows the storm. The nobility is unbending and rather haughty. The sadness is depressive rather than delicious. The virtuosity is somewhat arrogant. The sweetness is very nostalgic, the joy temporary . . . It’s impossible to be lulled into a sense of false security: there’s always a detail lurking in a bar somewhere to shake us up and keep us alert. These are the features that for me characterise Forqueray’s world and make these pieces so fascinating.
VIRTUOSITY Today’s viol players, like their counterparts at the time, regard Forqueray’s pieces as a monument of technical difficulty, a difficulty that verges on the demoniac . . . The same thing applies on the keyboard. Concealed behind the very French genre of the suite of dances in ‘portrait’ form is the unshakeable determination to push the performers to their very limits. ‘You want to express feelings? You’ll have to work hard to do so!’ – that’s what the Forquerays, whose human and family relationships were pretty explosive, seem to be saying to us. As if we had to suffer to deserve the right to say something, to suffer to make ourselves understood . . . This virtuosity is never gratuitous, sparkling, or relaxed. We’re immersed in the sound matter right up to our necks. There’s an element of rage, I think, in this way of treating technical difficulty as a means of expression. And also a vibrant sensibility, which tells us that we’re never as sincere as when we show our agitation, at the risk of also showing our weakness.
HOMAGE Jean-Baptiste published these Pièces in 1747, in two versions: one for viola da gamba with continuo – they had never been printed in Antoine’s lifetime – and the other a transcription for harpsichord (mises en pièces de clavecin). We’ll probably never know if this was a homage to a father with whom his relations had always been extremely violent, and who even had his son sent into exile, or a way of taking revenge by appropriating his father’s works, as it were, or a commercial operation to take advantage of Antoine’s reputation. One can also wonder if the Pièces really are by Antoine at all. The modernity of style can cast doubt on their paternity. But, in any case, the decision to transcribe them for harpsichord was certainly Jean-Baptiste’s alone. 18
TRANSCRIPTION We know that transcription was a widespread practice at the time. The harpsichord, as a harmony instrument, can appropriate for itself anything from a sonata to an opera. In fact, any piece for treble and bass can be very naturally and easily reduced for harpsichord: the melody in the right hand and the bass in the left, with the harmonic realisation shared between the two. In the case of pieces for the viol, however, the process is less straightforward, for several reasons: – the viol and its accompaniment share the same tessitura; – the viol is a harmony instrument, and the solo part itself already contains chords; – the viol very often shares the bass line with the continuo. When a continuo player accompanies these pieces, he or she is subject to three constraints: – to remain in a low tessitura, so as not to sound above the viol; – to share the chords with the viol; – to bring out the bass notes that are part of both the solo melody and the continuo line. Obviously, when we have to play these pieces by Forqueray in their version for harpsichord, all these roles are combined, and that’s what’s so exciting about it. Two hands and ten fingers to make the melody sing, play the bass line and realise the continuo. And be a considerate accompanist to ourselves! 19
FRANÇAIS ENGLISH DEUTSCH
By that time, the viola da gamba was starting to sink slowly into oblivion, while the harpsichord remained the instrument of predilection for amateur music lovers. So it seems natural enough to want to give the greatest number a chance to enjoy the beauty of this music originally written for viol. Jean-Baptiste’s wife, Rose-Marie Dubois, was an excellent harpsichordist. It’s very likely that she took an active part in making the transcriptions.

‘THe liBeRTieS i TooK CoRReSPond To THoSe We aRe alloWed BY deFiniTion aS ConTinuiSTS.’ One can see some differences between the version for viol and the transcription. From time to time, I enjoyed opting for the viol version, especially in the bass and the treatment of the continuo figuring. Some fine original harmonies disappeared in the harpsichord version, and I thought I could reinstate them. I also allowed myself on occasion to realise the continuo in a slightly different way, to distribute the notes of the chords in a different order, to go a little higher sometimes so as not to squeeze all the chords into the left hand alone. The liberties I took correspond to those we are allowed by definition as continuists. And, finally, I incorporated in the mise en pièces de clavecin those little trivial details that make continuo playing such a pleasure: countermelodies replying to the melodic line, ornaments, acciaccaturas, and so on. Those little details that we like to add, not to show off, but to be part of the richness of this profound music.
