ENGLISH

ENGLISH

With this programme of English music of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, I realised what is every musician’s dream: to record and share with others a repertory very close to my heart. It was in 2005, and it was my very first disc. The choice of what I was going to record was even more important than usual. It seemed to me that this was the music that I was most ready to present to the public, and that would represent me best – since, for a young performer, a disc is also a visiting card. I discovered the music of the English virginalists at the age of fifteen, when I heard a concert by Pierre Hantaï on the radio. It was a revelation. I had no idea a musical world like that even existed. I immediately went to play some of these pieces to Pierre Hantaï himself. That was my first approach to this repertory on the keyboard. Then the process of familiarisation with it – like the progress of a relationship that gradually becomes more intimate – took place over ten years or so, until 2004, when I began a long period of preparation for this recording. The King’s Hunt and the In Nomine by Bull, The Queen’s Alman by Byrd and the Dolorosa of Philips – which you might describe as constant companions of mine – formed the basis of the programme. Then I played my way through the entire output of Byrd and Bull so as to build the rest of it around them. I absolutely wanted to record on the Martin Skowroneck virginal belonging to Skip Sempé. I was also lucky that Philippe Humeau had just finished his Ruckers double transposing harpsichord, a magnificent and rare instrument, which guided some of my choices. The English repertory is very extensive. It was a true pleasure to have to select pieces from so many marvels. I decided on the title Pescodd Time after the recording was finished. It was the ideal title for this album: it speaks of time – ‘the pea-gathering season’ in Elizabethan English – and it encapsulates the poetry and mystery of the Virginalists.

DANCES The programme gathers together many dances – pavans, galliards, allemandes, courantes . . . But in the hands of Byrd, Bull or Philips, they don’t seem intended to be actually danced. The style of writing preserves the rhythms and structures of the dance but invites us to dance and sing ‘inwardly’. Originally, they tended to be played in a small circle – of family, or friends, or members of the royal entourage – or even all on one’s own. Harpsichord music offers performers and listeners a chance to enter the composer’s private world. Even in the virtuoso or brilliant moments, it is an inward celebration, expressed not in exuberance but in deeply concentrated listening, which is the specificity of this solitary practice. It’s interesting to note that certain pieces in this repertory are almost impossible to present to an audience – maybe they’re just not intended for that – but are nonetheless masterpieces. The path they pursue can lead the player into a sort of trance, as if in meditation. 16

ENGLISH

William Byrd, John Bull and Peter Philips, like the continental composers of the period, use the devices of variation and diminution. This was the ‘normal’ sixteenth-century way of putting your personal mark on a song: first you played it ‘straight’, then you played it again with variations. Composers wrote their own versions of well-known songs, and the results are very different from each other. How to present a tune, and how to vary it: it’s interesting to observe how each composer goes about developing his language in a very personal way within the bounds of the modes of expression of the time – just what blend of counterpoint, diminution, technical inventiveness, ornamentation do they use? With practice, you can recognise composers even in the way they write variations. William Byrd was in favour with the Anglican Queen Elizabeth I, which permitted him to exercise his compositional talent while nonetheless affirming his own Roman Catholic faith. The queen had granted Byrd and Tallis the joint monopoly of printing music. He had great influence as a composer, but also as a diffuser of music and a teacher. Although it’s often said that Byrd was the father of the English Virginalists, I’d like to correct that by placing Tallis, who was the first English composer to write for the keyboard, before him. Byrd benefited from his work and took it further. As a result, his own style is perfectly finished. Tallis, Byrd and their pupils created a keyboard style that no longer consists in transcription of vocal polyphony or merely writing down folksongs; we’re now talking about compositions genuinely conceived for an instrument.

INSTRUMENTS The instruments played in England under the name of ‘virginal’ in fact encompass the whole harpsichord family. It would be difficult and probably inaccurate for us to try today to classify elements from a period when everything was unstable – both the instruments and their names. I’ll certainly be forgetting something if I tell you that at that time there existed harpsichords, spinets (like the Italian spinet that Elizabeth I played), virginals or muselars (a virginal with the keyboard placed right of centre), ‘mother and child’ virginals (with an ottavino, playing an octave higher, in addition to the principal instrument), claviorgans (harpsichords coupled with an organ) and so on. What’s more, most of the time we don’t know whether the surviving repertory was intended to be played on an organ or on such-and-such a plucked string instrument. Harpsichordists who play the English repertory are inevitably confronted with the question of instruments, since we possess virtually no surviving English harpsichords from the sixteenth century. So, very often, for reasons of tonal and historical verisimilitude, they opt for instruments in the Flemish or Italian styles, which spread all over Europe. The earliest extant English harpsichord, for example, was built in 1579 by a Flemish maker living in London, Lodewijk Theewes. For each piece on the disc, I naturally chose to play the harpsichord or the virginal according to the timbres and the characteristics of the instruments and what they could bring to the works. The Philippe Humeau harpsichord after a Ruckers original is a double transposing instrument, which means that the lower manual plays a fourth below the upper manual. There’s a big contrast between the two manuals: one has a dark sound, the other is brilliant and nasal. I used the lower manual – the one that plays a fourth down – to record the pavan and galliard by Philips. That gave the piece the flexible and majestic dimension it seemed to call for. Using this Ruckers double – almost two harpsichords in one – in addition to the virginal widens the palette of colours, and 18

Luckily enough, the reception this recording got on its first release didn’t result in the public pigeonholing me. For example, by enabling me to enter what one might call ‘the circle of people who play English music’ it also opened the door to conducting, because it gave me legitimacy in the eyes of the producers of John Blow’s Venus and Adonis in 2012. And today my project Le Caravansérail and I continue to explore this English repertory. I’m very fond of this recording and I’m pleased it’s being reissued now. It introduced me to the partners I still record with today: Hugues Deschaux, whose recording gives us the impression that the instruments are here in the room with us, in all their richness; Jean-François Brun and his sumptuous tunings; and the wonderful instruments of Skowroneck and Humeau. How lucky I am to be able to share all that with the public again! Interview: 14 December 2015
