PIONNIER Leonhardt et Harnoncourt ne savaient pas quel serait finalement le résultat de leurs recherches et concerts à Vienne dans les années 1950. En réalité, ils cherchaient surtout à entendre et à apprendre comment la musique des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles sonnait sur les instruments disponibles au moment où elle fut écrite – à savoir si le comportement des « instruments originaux » faisait une différence, d’une manière ou d’une autre.

Leonhardt a entièrement changé la façon d’aborder la musique ancienne – et la musique de clavier.

C’était un vrai maître de la rhétorique et de la syntaxe musicales. La rhétorique est importante, mais la syntaxe – le système qui permet à absolument tout de tomber à la bonne place au bon moment – en est l’indispensable complément.

Gustav Leonhardt a su enseigner le clavecin au plus haut niveau, sur des instruments fondés sur ceux des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. C’est une démarche qui n’avait jamais été entreprise et développée auparavant, depuis le « retour à la musique ancienne » de la première partie du XXe siècle.

Il partageait toujours tout ce qu’il savait, dans une espèce de relation de maître à disciple, par imitation et explication. La technique particulière qui donnait ce haut niveau au jeu de Leonhardt est sa réinvention de la manière complexe de créer ce qu’il appelait la « polyphonie du clavier », fondée exclusivement sur l’écoute, l’agogique et le toucher. Il enseignait ce système brillamment pensé qui opposait subtilité et intensité au moyen d’accents agogiques et d’inflexions rhétoriques.

Sa plus grande qualité était peut-être son extraordinaire conviction musicale. À sa propre manière, discrète, il l’enseignait également.

L’effet à long terme ne faisait cependant pas partie de sa préoccupation première : pour Leonhardt, le musicien avec un « plan de carrière » était un phénomène des années 1980, et non des années 1950 ! Mais quand il apparut à l’évidence qu’à long terme, dès le milieu des années 1980, il exerçait effectivement une influence majeure sur tout le monde de la musique, il comprit qu’il était, avec Nikolaus Harnoncourt et Frans Brüggen, la force musicale et artistique majeure derrière absolument tout ce que nous appelons aujourd’hui l’« interprétation historiquement informée ».

« LA MUSIQUE DE CLAVECIN PROCÈDE DE LA MUSIQUE VOCALE » Leonhardt disait, et je le pense aussi, que toute musique instrumentale est en quelque sorte d’inspiration vocale. Je parle ici du répertoire d’Europe occidentale composé avant la musique atonale du XXe siècle, qui n’est pas d’inspiration vocale. Au fil du XXe siècle, la musique vocale est devenue de plus en plus « instrumentale » dans son orientation. Leonhardt était convaincu du pouvoir de la musique purement instrumentale parce qu’il était très proche des meilleurs instruments de musique, en particulier des clavecins et des orgues. Il jouait également du violoncelle et de la viole de gambe, et cette expérience des instruments à archet lui avait donné une connaissance intime 9

Leonhardt était avant tout claveciniste et organiste – la direction est venue plus tard. Sa façon de traiter le clavecin et l’orgue comme de purs instruments de musique, fondés sur les meilleurs exemples de la Renaissance et du baroque – plutôt que comme des meubles, des gadgets, des machines ou des curiosités –, était révélatrice. S’il fit une carrière de claveciniste, d’organiste et de chambriste – avec le Leonhardt Consort, au sein duquel il jouait du clavecin, de l’orgue de chambre et de la viole de gambe –, il ne tenta jamais de faire une carrière de chef, se contentant de répondre favorablement aux propositions de diriger un répertoire plus vaste qui l’intéressait à la tête de chœurs, solistes et orchestres baroques. Et il avait bien conscience de l’importante différence musicale et artistique entre un travail musical détaillé, intentionnel, et la direction proprement dite (il a toujours considéré que diriger était bien plus facile, « pour peu qu’on connaisse la musique », que jouer d’un instrument !).

Il faut dire ici qu’à un moment donné un grand instrumentiste doit se concentrer sur ce que la voix ne peut pas faire : quand on arrive à ce point, le jeu instrumental peut être aussi convaincant que toute voix chantée.

INSTRUMENTS Leonhardt a toujours cherché à associer le répertoire aux instruments appropriés. En tant qu’instrumentiste, rien ne l’intéressait plus que les clavecins et les orgues d’une exquise musicalité. Rien ne servait mieux ses concerts ou ses enregistrements que l’inspiration qu’il recevait d’un instrument nouvellement découvert. Il était toujours curieux, se liant d’amitié avec tous les meilleurs facteurs d’orgue et de clavecin, y compris ceux qui ont fait les instruments entendus dans cet enregistrement.

Du reste, tout ce dont il avait besoin pour être inspiré était l’instrument : les décisions musicales expertes et exigeantes avaient toutes été prises des décennies plus tôt.

Leonhardt lui-même aimait les programmes de récital. Il trouvait extrêmement fastidieux les organisateurs de concerts qui manquaient d’imagination et lui demandaient les Variations Goldberg.

Il faisait donc toujours ses propres choix sur le répertoire de clavecin, d’orgue ou d’ensemble qu’il jouait et enregistrait. J’aime tout particulièrement ses enregistrements des virginalistes, de Louis Couperin, Frescobaldi, Froberger, et ses transcriptions pour clavecin de la musique pour violon seul de Bach.

Je crois que la seule chose dont on puisse avoir hérité de Leonhardt est sa conviction musicale.

Au-delà, il est sans doute important de souligner que la France a beaucoup hérité de Leonhardt, de son enseignement et de son jeu, et a vu naître une nouvelle génération de clavecinistes, dont certains ont étudié avec lui, d’autres non. Dans les années 1960 et 1970, la scène musicale française était encore très fermée à Leonhardt et à sa démarche ; puis, peu à peu, sa vision a éclipsé toutes les influences antérieures en France, y compris celles de Landowska et de la « vieille école ».

Le résultat direct est qu’il y a davantage de bons clavecinistes en France que partout ailleurs. Tout cela grâce à Leonhardt, qui a commencé sa carrière discographique avec Bach et l’a terminée avec Forqueray. Les meilleurs clavecins de sa collection personnelle sont maintenant ici, auprès de ses vieux amis – ce qui est une bonne chose. Et cet enregistrement – comme plusieurs autres parmi les derniers de Leonhardt – a été réalisé pour un label français, parce que Paris est devenue la capitale du monde du clavecin.

Il me manque tout particulièrement quand je l’entends si bien jouer de l’orgue. Et quand je joue sur ses propres clavecins. Et peut-être plus encore quand j’entends mes amis et mes élèves jouer sur ces instruments. Aujourd’hui, il reste encore extraordinairement présent pour moi.

Leonhardt and Harnoncourt did not know how the result of their research and performances in Vienna in the 1950s would finally turn out. In fact, they were primarily interested in hearing and learning about how sixteenth-, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music sounded on the instruments available when the music was written – to know whether the behaviour of the ‘original instruments’ made a musical difference in one way or another.

Leonhardt totally changed the approach to early music – and to keyboard music. He was a real master of musical rhetoric and of musical syntax. Rhetoric is important, but syntax – the system that allows absolutely everything to fall in the right place at the right time – is the necessary complement.

Gustav Leonhardt was able to teach harpsichord playing at the highest level, on instruments based on those of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This is a phenomenon that had not previously been dealt with nor perfected during the ‘early music revival’ of the earlier twentieth century.

He always shared everything he knew, in a kind of a master-disciple process, through imitation and explanation. Leonhardt’s particular technique that provided for this high-level harpsichord playing was his re-invention of the complex manner of creating what he referred to as ‘keyboard polyphony’, based exclusively on listening, timing and touch. He taught this brilliantly conceived system that contrasted subtlety with intensity through the use of agogic accent and rhetorical inflexion.

Perhaps his greatest quality was his extraordinary musical conviction. In his own discreet manner, he also taught this.

Nevertheless the long-term effect was not part of his initial interest: for Leonhardt, a musician with a ‘business plan’ was a phenomenon of the 1980s, not of the 1950s! But when it became obvious that the long-term effect had indeed a major influence on the entire music world by the mid-1980s, he knew that he was, along with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Frans Brüggen, the major musical and artistic force behind absolutely everything that we now consider ‘historically informed performance’.

Leonhardt was primarily a harpsichordist and organist – conducting came later. His treatment of the harpsichord and the organ as pure musical instruments – rather than treating them as furniture, gadgets, machines or curiosities – from the finest acoustic examples of the Renaissance and Baroque periods was revelatory. Though he succeeded in making a career as a harpsichordist, organist and chamber musician – with the Leonhardt Consort in which he played harpsichord, chamber organ and viola da gamba – he never attempted to make a career as a conductor, he just responded favourably to offers to direct larger repertoire that interested him with Baroque 16

Leonhardt said, and I also think that all instrumental music is somehow vocally inspired. I refer to Western European repertoire composed before the twentieth-century atonal repertoire, which is not vocally inspired. In the course of the twentieth century, vocal music became increasingly instrumentally oriented. Leonhardt was convinced of the power of purely instrumental music because he was so involved with the finest musical instruments, namely harpsichords and organs.

He also played the cello and the viola da gamba, and from these experiences with bowed stringed instruments he had an intimate knowledge of the bow and of bowing – namely upbow, downbow and whether the bow was in contact with the string or not. It is now time to mention that, at some point, a great instrumentalist must concentrate on what the voice cannot do: when you arrive at that point, instrumental playing can be as convincing as any singing.

INSTRUMENTS

Leonhardt always sought to match the appropriate repertoire with the appropriate instruments.

As an instrumentalist, nothing interested him more than musically exquisite harpsichords and organs. Nothing served his public or recorded performances more than the inspiration he received from a newly discovered instrument. He was always curious, he befriended all the best organ and harpsichord makers, including the ones who made the instruments heard on this recording. In fact, 17

orchestras, choirs and soloists. And, he was well aware of the important musical and artistic difference between detailed, intentioned musical direction and conducting (which, ‘as long as you know the music’, he always considered to be the easiest musical activity, far easier than playing!).

all he needed for inspiration was the instrument: the expert and exacting musical decisions had all been made decades earlier.

Leonhardt himself liked recital programs. He found concert organizers who asked for the Goldberg Variations especially tedious and unimaginative. So, he always made his own choices about how to represent the harpsichord, organ or ensemble repertoire he would perform and record. I particularly enjoy his virginal music, Louis Couperin, Frescobaldi, Froberger, and his Bach harpsichord transcriptions from the solo violin music.

At this point of heritage, I think that the only thing one could really have inherited from Leonhardt is his musical conviction. Other than that, it is perhaps important to mention that it is France that has inherited much from Leonhardt, through his tradition and the subsequent creation a new generation of harpsichordists – some of whom studied with him and some of whom did not. In the 1960s and 70s, the French musical scene was extremely resistant to Leonhardt and to his approach, then, little by little, his approach eclipsed all previous influences in France, those of Landowska and the Ancien

Régime. The direct result of this is that there are more fine harpsichordists in France than anywhere in the world. All this via Leonhardt, who began his career with Bach and finished it with Forqueray.

This is somehow appropriate – even the finest harpsichords from his personal collection are now here with his old friends. And this very recording – as well as several others among Leonhardt’s last recordings – was made for a French label, largely due to the fact that Paris has become the centre of the harpsichord world.

I particularly miss him when I hear his fine organ playing. And when I play on his own harpsichords.

Perhaps even more when I hear my friends and students play on them. Today, he is still extraordinarily present for me.

PIONIER Leonhardt und Harnoncourt wussten nicht, was bei ihren Forschungen und Aufführungen im Wien der fünfziger Jahre schließlich herauskommen würde. Im Grunde suchten sie vor allem zu verstehen und zu erfahren, wie die Musik des 16., 17. und 18. In dieser Art Lehrer-Schüler-Beziehung teilte er immer alles, was er wusste, durch Nachahmen und Erklären mit. Leonhardts besondere Technik, die seinem Spiel dieses hohe Niveau verlieh, ist seine Neuerfindung der komplexen „Polyphonie des Claviers“, die ausschließlich auf Hören, Agogik und Berühren begründet ist. Er unterrichtete dieses brillant erdachte System, das Subtilität und Intensität mithilfe agogischer Akzentsetzungen und rhetorischer Inflexionen voneinander absetzte.

Seine größte Qualität war vielleicht sein außerordentliches musikalisches Bewusstsein. Auf seine diskrete Art gab er es auch weiter.

Auf eine langfristige Wirkung kam es ihm zwar vorab nicht an: Der Musiker mit einem „Karriereplan“ war für Leonhardt ein Phänomen der 1980er Jahre, nicht der 1950er! Aber als Mitte der achtziger Jahre deutlich wurde, dass Leonhardt auf die ganze Welt der Musik einen wirklich entscheidendenden Einfluss ausübte, begriff er, dass er zusammen mit Nikolaus Harnoncourt und Frans Brüggen die musikalische und künstlerische Kraft darstellte, die alles prägte, was wir heute „historisch informierte Interpretation“ nennen.

ORCHESTERLEITUNG Leonhardt war vor allem Cembalist und Organist, erst später dirigierte er. Erhellend ist die Art, wie er, gegründet auf die besten Exemplare aus Renaissance und Barock, Cembalo und Orgel als reine Musikinstrumente behandelte und nicht als Möbel, Gadgets, Maschinen oder Kuriositäten.

Der Cembalist, Organist und Kammermusiker – innerhalb des Leonhardt Consort spielte er Cembalo, Orgelpositiv und Viola da gamba – hat nie versucht, als Dirigent Karriere zu machen; allenfalls griff er Angebote auf, die es ihm ermöglichten, durch die Arbeit mit Chören, Solisten oder Barockorchestern ein breiteres Repertoire zu erkunden, das ihn interessierte. Und der tiefe musikalische und künstlerische Unterschied zwischen detaillierter, gezielter musikalischer Arbeit und der eigentlichen Orchesterleitung war ihm durchaus bewusst (er hielt es immer für weit leichter zu dirigieren – „sofern man die Musik kennt“ – als ein Instrument zu spielen!).

„ DIE CEMBALOMUSIK GEHT AUS DEM GESANG HERVOR “ Leonhardt sagte – und ich denke es auch –, dass alle Instrumentalmusik in gewisser Weise aus der Vokalmusik hervorgeht. Ich spreche hier vom westeuropäischen Repertoire vor der Erfindung der atonalen Musik, die nicht aus der Vokalmusik hervorgeht. Im Verlauf des Zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts hat sich die Vokalmusik zunehmend an der Instrumentalmusik ausgerichtet. Leonhardt war von der Macht reiner Instrumentalmusik überzeugt, weil er mit den besten Musikinstrumenten umging, vor allem mit Cembalos und Orgeln. Er spielte auch Cello und Viola da gamba, und diese Instrumente verschafften ihm eine präzise Kenntnis des Bogens und der Feinheiten des Bogenstrichs: Aufstrich, Abstrich, Kontakt zwischen Bogen und Saite... Ein großer Instrumentalist muss sich irgendwann auf etwas konzentrieren, was die Stimme nicht kann, und wenn man an diesem Punkt ankommt, kann das Instrumentalspiel ebenso überzeugend wirken wie jeder Gesang.

INSTRUMENTE Leonhardt suchte immer nach den Instrumenten, die für das Repertoire am besten geeignet waren. Als Instrumentalist interessierte ihn nichts mehr als Cembalos und Orgeln von ausgesucher Qualität. Nichts war ihm bei seinen Konzerten oder Einspielungen hilfreicher als die Inspiration, die er von einem neu entdeckten Instrument empfing. Er war stets neugierig, schloss Freundschaft mit den besten Orgelbauern und Cembaloherstellern – die Instrumente, die wir in dieser Aufnahme hören, stammen von ihnen. Im Übrigen inspirierte ihn nichts so sehr wie das Instrument, da die musikalisch notwendigen Entscheidungen seit Jahrzehnten feststanden.

Leonhardt kümmerte sich gern selbst um die Zusammenstellung von Konzertprogrammen. Er fand die phantasielosen Veranstalter langweilig, die immerzu die Goldberg-Variationen hören wollten, und stellte die Cembalo-, Orgel- oder Ensembleprogramme, die er aufführen oder aufnehmen wollte, stets selber zusammen. Ich mag ganz besonders seine Aufnahmen der Virginalisten, die von Louis Couperin, Frescobaldi, Froberger und seine Cembalotranskriptionen der Bachschen Violinmusik.

ERBE Ich glaube, das Einzige, was man von Leonhardt geerbt haben kann, ist sein musikalisches Bewusstsein. Davon abgesehen ist natürlich zu betonen, dass Frankreich viel von Leonhardt gelernt hat, von seinem Unterricht und von seinem Spiel, und dass eine neue Generation von Cembalisten entstanden ist, von denen einige bei ihm studiert haben, andere nicht. In den sechziger und siebziger Jahren zeigte sich die musikalische Szene in Frankreich Leonhardt und seiner Methode gegenüber noch sehr verschlossen; danach hat seine Sicht mit allen früheren Tendenzen aufgeräumt, auch 26

mit Landowska und der „alten Schule“. Dass es mehr gute Cembalisten in Frankreich gibt als irgendwo sonst, ist eine unmittelbare Folge davon; all dies dank Leonhardt, der seine Laufbahn mit Bach begann und mit Forqueray beendete. Hier befinden sich auch die besten Cembalos aus seiner persönlichen Sammlung, bei alten Freunden, und das ist gut so. Und die vorliegende Aufnahme – wie viele der letzten, die Leonhardt eingespielt hat – wurde für ein französisches Label aufgenommen, weil Paris zur Hauptstadt des Cembalos geworden ist.

Er fehlt mir besonders, wenn ich ihn so wundervoll auf der Orgel spielen höre. Und wenn ich auf seinen eigenen Cembalos spiele. Und vielleicht noch mehr, wenn ich meine Freunde und Schüler auf seinen Instrumenten spielen höre. Noch heute ist er für mich außerordentlich präsent.
