Johann Sebastian Bach est un compositeur qui m’accompagne depuis les débuts de mon apprentissage musical et ne m’a jamais quitté. J’y reviens régulièrement, en concert, au disque…

Cela a un lien, naturellement, avec les suites pour violoncelle seul mais cela va plus loin car l’ensemble du répertoire écrit par Bach exprime pour moi tant de choses différentes qu’il pourrait se suffire à lui-même et me combler.

Bach est à la charnière de deux siècles – les XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles –, de deux mondes au cœur du répertoire que je pratique. Du XVIIe siècle, voire même parfois avant, il puise la richesse de son langage musical, de sa grammaire – les formes, l’harmonie, la rhétorique, la diminution qui devient mélisme… –, et nous livre des compositions qui, elles, sont plus tournées vers le XVIIIe siècle.

Dans ma démarche de compréhension et d’exploration des répertoires et des instruments, je suis en perpétuel aller et retour dans ce jeu de miroir entre ces deux siècles.

Si cela est valable pour la matière textuelle, ça l’est aussi pour les instruments. On sent chez Bach une recherche de la couleur, de l’élocution, de la diction pour faire passer tous les sentiments ou donner à la fois force et variété au discours musical. Cette démarche emprunte un instrumentarium très riche, qui s’abreuve à la variété du XVIIe siècle, comme si Bach avait besoin de toute cette diversité d’un autre siècle que le sien pour exprimer ce qu’il avait à dire. Paradoxalement, il nous apparaît aujourd’hui très moderne, sans doute par ce qu’il arrive à toucher en nous depuis bientôt trois siècles : la spiritualité, l’humanisme, le sentiment passionnel, sans doute aussi le besoin d’une architecture rassurante.

Face à cette diversité organologique, je me pose la question, à chaque fois que je réaborde une œuvre de Bach, de l’instrument idéal pour la jouer. Cette quête obsédante m’incite à sans cesse réactualiser mon approche ; il existe toujours, en dépit des réflexes installés, une façon différente de

modeler la matière sonore et d’exprimer les choses. Au-delà de cette certitude qu’il y aura toujours à renouveler ou à découvrir avec Bach, je suis fasciné par le fait que sa musique concentre quelque chose d’unique qui touche à la fois le cœur, le corps et l’intellect.

TRIPTYQUE L’idée d’un programme en trois parties, chacune symétriquement constituée de trois pièces jouées en trio, était pour moi importante, bien que non préméditée. Les trois sonates étaient les pièces centrales de l’enregistrement mais je ne voulais pas qu’elles soient complétées de pièces qui sonnent comme un complément ni que le disque ressemble à un patchwork. J’ai donc cherché dans les pièces qui me plaisaient le plus celles qui permettraient de mettre en valeur les sonates de façon différente – sonore, symbolique. Ce fut un travail assez long. J’avais plusieurs instruments à ma disposition, il fallait aussi que cela corresponde et s’harmonise dans un jeu d’alternance des couleurs et des matières sonores.

Cette symbolique me parle, bien évidemment, mais je n’ai aucune prétention par rapport à cela : j’ai fait ce choix avec pudeur et modestie, comme une proposition de cheminement. Je sentais que ce rythme pouvait être le bon par rapport aux œuvres que je proposais. L’alchimie a opéré. Et en effet aujourd’hui, je vois que ce disque raconte véritablement quelque chose et conduit l’auditeur vers ce que j’avais envie de partager. De façon isolée, chaque pièce rayonne déjà d’équilibre ; la proposer sous une forme globale qui reste un équilibre à l’échelle du disque ne pouvait que l’enrichir.

Cet équilibre et cette répartition des œuvres en triptyque m’ont permis de gommer toute distinction entre musique sacrée et musique profane : à l’époque de Bach, cette notion n’était pas vécue de la même façon. C’est notre regard d’aujourd’hui qui met une distance entre les deux. Pour moi, religieuses ou profanes, ses compositions dégagent avant tout une grande force où la musique prime.

Ce qui est formidable avec Bach, c’est qu’une grande part de sa musique se prête à la transcription à condition de trouver des combinaisons sonores respectant la richesse ou la complexité du discours – il était d’ailleurs le premier à la pratiquer. La musique contrapuntique se prête magnifiquement bien à ces choix : il suffit de jouer les parties telles qu’elles sont écrites avec des instruments différents. On entendra la musique autrement mais toujours avec une richesse renouvelée.

Ce qui m’intéresse dans la transcription est ce qu’elle révèle de neuf. Ici, nous n’avons pas adapté mais simplement transposé certaines pièces dans une autre tonalité ou confié des voix déjà existantes à d’autres instruments que ceux d’origine.

Si l’on considère la musique d’orgue de Bach – je suis parti des versions pour orgue des chorals et non des pièces vocales –, l’instrument lui-même implique des timbres différents en fonction de la registration choisie par l’interprète. Les organistes ont une très grande liberté dans leur choix, que je me suis appropriée pour donner à la musique de Bach, en fonction de ce que j’avais envie de dire, des timbres différents. Cela rejoint aussi cette grammaire et ce vocabulaire du XVIIe qu’utilise Bach : à cette époque, la musique n’était pas toujours écrite pour un instrument bien défini mais pour des voix, des lignes aux tessitures elles bien définies ; aux interprètes de choisir les instruments, comme un peintre les couleurs.

Il faut noter que l’instrument à cordes a plus de possibilités articulatoires et de différences de consonances que l’orgue. Cela me permet de dire peut-être plus de choses que ne pourrait le dire un orgue dans les transcriptions existantes de Bach. L’instrument à cordes fait, grâce à ses possibilités d’expression, le lien entre l’orgue et la voix.

ÉQUILIBRE Avant d’enregistrer, nous avions travaillé et convenu de la répartition des voix, puis avec la prise de son, nous avons parfois envisagé une spatialisation des instruments pour en mettre certains plus en lumière que d’autres, à des moments précis.

La notion d’équilibre ne veut pas toujours dire trois voix égales : dans l’écriture des sonates par exemple, la voix du ténor de violon (violoncelle piccolo) ou de la grande basse de violon « alla bastarda » ressort plus que les deux autres jouées avec un même instrument : l’orgue ou le clavecin.

Dans les sonates en trio, nous avons donc gardé cette mise en avant naturelle de l’instrument à cordes. En ce qui concerne la contrebasse, nous souhaitions utiliser sa résonance grave : elle vient juste en soutien, discrètement, pour donner de la profondeur, de la consistance à la main gauche de l’orgue qu’elle double. L’équilibre recherché est une association subtile des timbres s’imbriquant, se valorisant, s’éclairant.

INSTRUMENTS Dans cet enregistrement, vous n’entendez pas de violoncelle – le violoncelle classique à quatre cordes – mais trois instruments nés de ma longue collaboration avec le facteur Charles Riché : un alto (2006), un ténor de violon (2003) et une grande basse de violon (2002).

Dès l’âge de vingt ans, j’étais attiré par les sonates pour viole de Bach. En les travaillant sur un violoncelle à cinq cordes, je me suis rendu compte à quel point elles sonnaient bien. Du fait de son accord en quinte, cet instrument est très doué pour la monodie d’une écriture contrapuntique. Les sonates BWV 1027 et 1028 se jouent parfaitement sur le ténor de violon que j’utilise ici.

Pour la troisième sonate, il me manquait quelque chose dans l’instrument par rapport à ce que j’avais envie d’exprimer. Les fondamentales et les harmoniques de la grande basse de violon étant 12

VERBE Dans ma recherche organologique, j’attache beaucoup d’importance à cette capacité de l’instrument à dire autant qu’à chanter. Dans les chorals, l’instrument prend à son compte le texte biblique – sans les mots. Il me fallait, pour « dire » ce texte, cette voix de l’alto presque surnaturelle, très éloignée d’un violoncelle, plus proche d’une petite viole ténor.

Parfois, pour arriver à jouer certaines consonances, il faut imaginer des mots sans les figurer « à la lettre », s’imprégner d’un sens. Pour jouer les chorals, j’ai pensé le texte de façon globale de manière à traduire un esprit. Ce n’est pas une traduction mot à mot, même si certains d’entre eux peuvent ressortir de façon plus claire. Voilà qui ajoute du sens au mot « interprète » et à toute la richesse de notre mission de passeur et de musicien.

en lien avec la tonalité de sol mineur de la sonate, une forme d’adéquation se dégageait presque naturellement. L’instrument donne de la profondeur à la sonate en même temps qu’une vitalité un peu âpre. Le jeu fut un peu athlétique en raison de la grande longueur vibrante des cordes mais il y a dans cette joute heureuse avec l’instrument quelque chose qui fait dire au texte ce qui pour moi n’a peut-être jamais été dit.

Nous sommes ici entre le monde des violons et celui des violes. Comparés au violoncelle à quatre cordes, ces instruments sont plus fragiles et moins polyvalents en fonction des tonalités qui sont jouées : ils vont dégager plus d’harmoniques dans certaines tonalités, moins dans d’autres.

Pour finir, le petit instrument joué dans les chorals – l’alto « Bettera » – évoque la voix. Son ambitus est réduit, comme une partition vocale. On entend un timbre qui nous raconte une histoire plus qu’un instrument qui nous joue une pièce démonstrative.

BACH Johann Sebastian Bach is a composer who has accompanied me since I first started learning music and has never left me. I come back to him regularly, in concert and on disc.

Naturally, that’s bound up with the Suites for solo cello, but it goes further than that, because the entire output of Bach expresses so many different things for me that he could be sufficient unto himself and he would still satisfy me.

Bach stands at the cusp of two centuries, the seventeenth and eighteenth – two worlds that lie at the heart of the repertory I play. From the seventeenth century, or sometimes earlier, he took the richness of his musical language, of his grammar – forms, harmony, rhetoric, diminution which becomes melisma – to give us compositions that look more towards the eighteenth century.

In my attempt to understand and explore repertories and instruments, I am constantly shuttling back and forth between the two sides of the reflecting mirror of these two centuries.

If that’s true of the textual material, it’s equally true of the instruments. One senses in Bach a search for colour, elocution, diction, in order to convey all the sentiments or give the musical discourse both force and variety. In this approach he makes use of a very rich instrumentarium, which draws extensively on the variety of the seventeenth century, as if he needed all this diversity of a different era from his own to express everything he had to say. Paradoxically, he seems very modern to us today, probably through the chords he manages to touch in us at a distance of nearly three centuries: spirituality, humanism, intense feeling, probably also the need for a reassuring structure.

In the face of such organological diversity, I ask myself, every time I tackle a work of Bach’s again, what the ideal instrument to play it is. It’s an obsessive quest, which constantly prompts me to rethink my approach; despite all one’s ingrained reflexes, there’s always a different way of moulding the sound matter and expressing things. And, beyond that certainty that there will always be something

The idea of a programme in three parts, each symmetrically comprising three pieces played in trio formation, was important to me, but not premeditated. The three sonatas were the central works of the recording, but I didn’t want them to be surrounded by pieces that would sound like a mere complement, nor did I want the disc to resemble a patchwork. So, among the pieces I liked most, I looked for those which would show off the sonatas in a different light – in terms of sound and symbolism. It was a lengthy process. I had several instruments at my disposal, so the programme also had to cohere and harmonise in an interplay of timbres and sound materials.

The symbolic aspect of this appeals to me, obviously, but I don’t make any claims for it: I made my choice in all discretion and modesty, as a suggested itinerary. I sensed that its rhythm could work in relation to the pieces I was presenting. The alchemy happened. And it’s true that, today, I see that this disc really tells a story of something and leads the listener towards what I wanted to share. Taken in isolation, each piece already exudes balance; to present it in an overall form that maintains a balance on the larger scale of the whole disc could only enrich it.

That balance and the distribution of the works in a triptych allowed me to efface all distinction between sacred music and secular music: in Bach’s time, people didn’t view that distinction in the same way. It’s our contemporary attitude that places a distance between the two. For me, whether sacred or secular, his compositions radiate above all a tremendous force in which music is always the prime mover.

to renew or discover with Bach, I’m fascinated by the fact that his music concentrates within it something unique that touches at once the heart, the body and the intellect.

TRANSCRIPTION What’s so marvellous about Bach is that a large proportion of his music lends itself to transcription, as long as one finds sonic combinations that respect the richness or the complexity of the discourse – indeed, Bach himself was the first to transcribe his works. Contrapuntal music is ideally suited to this option: you just need to play the parts as written, but with different instruments. You hear the music in a new way but it remains as rich as ever.

The thing that interests me in transcription is what it reveals that’s new about the music. Here we haven’t adapted the pieces, but simply transposed some of them into another key or assigned preexisting voices to different instruments from the original ones.

If you look at Bach’s organ music – I worked from the organ versions of the chorales and not from vocal settings of them – the instrument itself implies different timbres according to the registration chosen by the performer. Organists have very great freedom in their choices, a freedom I appropriated for myself in order to clothe Bach’s music in timbres that varied with what I wanted to say. This also brings us back to the seventeenth-century grammar and vocabulary that Bach employs: at that period, music wasn’t always written for a clearly defined instrument but for voices, lines, in tessituras that, however, were clearly defined; it was up to the performers to choose the instruments, just as a painter chooses his or her colours.

It should be noted that string instruments have more articulatory possibilities and differences of consonance than the organ does. Perhaps that enables me to say more than an organ could in the existing transcriptions by Bach. Thanks to its expressive possibilities, the string instrument provides the link between the organ and the voice.

In this recording, you won’t hear a cello – the classic four-string violoncello – but instead three instruments that are products of my longstanding collaboration with the luthier Charles Riché: a viola (2006), a tenor violin (2003) and a large bass violin (2002).

From the age of twenty, I found myself attracted by Bach’s sonatas for viola da gamba. Through practising them on a five-string cello, I realised how well they sounded. Its tuning in fifths makes it very well suited to playing contrapuntal textures intended for a monophonic instrument. The sonatas BWV 1027 and 1028 work perfectly on the tenor violin I use here.

For the third sonata, though, I found there was something lacking in this instrument for what I wanted to convey. Since the fundamentals and harmonics of the large bass violin coincide with the sonata’s 19

In our rehearsals before going into the recording studio, we agreed on the distribution of the instrumental voices. Then, working with the sound engineering team, we sometimes decided to spatialise the instruments in order to give more prominence to some than to others at specific moments.

The notion of balance doesn’t always mean three equal voices: in the texture of the sonatas, for example, the voice of the tenor violin (violoncello piccolo) or of the large bass violin alla bastarda emerges more than the other two voices played on a single instrument, the organ or the harpsichord.

Hence, in the trio sonatas, we kept this natural prominence of the string instrument. In the case of the double bass, we wished to use its deep resonance: its role is limited to providing discreet support in order to add substance to the left hand of the organ part, which it doubles. The balance is there, in this subtle association of timbres interweaving, setting each other in relief, shedding light on each other.

key of G minor, it seemed an almost natural decision to choose that instrument, which gives the sonata depth along with a slightly harsh vitality. It was a somewhat athletic experience to play the work on the bass violin because of the great vibrating length of the strings, but this exciting tussle with the instrument makes the text say something that I think may never have been said before.

We are somewhere between the world of the violin family and that of the viols here. Compared to the four-string cello, these instruments are more fragile and less versatile, depending on the keys in which they’re played: they will produce more harmonics in some keys, fewer in others.

Finally, the small instrument played in the chorales – the ‘Bettera’ viola – evokes the human voice.

Its range is restricted, as in a vocal work. You hear a timbre that tells us a story rather than an instrument that plays us a demonstrative piece.

SPEECH I attach great importance in my organological research to this capacity of the instrument to speak as much as to sing. In the chorales, the instrument takes account of the text of the hymn – but without pronouncing the words. To ‘speak’ this text I needed the almost supernatural voice of the viola, very remote from a cello, closer to a small tenor viol.

Sometimes, in order to play certain consonances, you have to imagine words without representing them ‘literally’, to become imbued with their meaning. To play the chorales, I thought of the text globally in order to get its spirit across. It isn’t a word-for-word translation, even if certain words may come out more clearly. Here is something that adds meaning to the word ‘interpreter’ and to all the richness of our mission as mediators and musicians.

Der Komponist Johann Sebastian Bach begleitet mich, seit ich angefangen habe, mich mit Musik zu beschäftigen. Bei Konzerten wie bei CD-Aufnahmen komme ich regelmäßig auf ihn zurück ...

Das hat natürlich mit den Cellosonaten zu tun, aber nicht nur damit. Bachs Gesamtwerk ist für mich so vielfältig, dass es sich selbst genügen und mich völlig ausfüllen könnte.

Bach steht am Wendepunkt des 17. und des 18. Jahrhunderts, und diese beiden Welten sprechen mich als Musiker besonders intensiv an. Den Reichtum seiner musikalischen Sprache, ihre Grammatik – die Formen, die Harmonie, die Rhetorik, die Diminution, die sich zum Melisma entwickelt ... –, all das entnimmt Bach dem 17. Jahrhundert (manchmal greift er sogar noch weiter zurück), und er schöpft daraus Kompositionen, die uns mehr dem 18. Jahrhundert anzugehören scheinen.

Bei meiner Erkundung der Kompositionen und Instrumente bewege ich mich ständig zwischen diesen beiden Jahrhunderten hin und her, im Spiegelspiel ihrer Musik.

Dies gilt nicht nur für die musikalische Schreibweise, sondern auch für die Instrumente. Bei Bach ist ein Streben nach Farbe, Ausdruck, Diktion spürbar, das alle Gefühle vermitteln, dem musikalischen Diskurs Kraft und zugleich Vielfalt geben möchte. Dieses Vorgehen greift auf ein überreiches Instrumentarium zurück, das von der Vielfalt des 17. Jahrhunderts zehrt, so als benötige Bach die ganze Mannigfaltigkeit eines anderen Jahrhunderts, um das, was er zu sagen hat, in Töne zu fassen. Paradoxerweise erscheint uns dieses Verfahren heute als sehr modern, wohl deswegen, weil es ihm seit nun bald dreihundert Jahren gelingt, Spiritualität, Menschlichkeit und Leidenschaft in uns anzusprechen, gewiss auch das Bedürfnis nach einer beruhigenden Architektur.

Angesichts dieser organischen Vielfalt stelle ich mir jedesmal, wenn ich mich mit einem Werk von Bach befasse, die Frage nach dem idealen Instrument. Diese Frage, die mich nicht loslässt, bringt

mich immer wieder dazu, meinen Ansatz neu zu überprüfen. Trotz aller eingefahrenen Reflexe gibt es immer noch unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten, das Klangmaterial zu formen, die Dinge zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Aber ganz abgesehen davon, dass sich bei Bach wohl immer etwas erneuern oder entdecken lässt, bin ich fasziniert davon, dass seine Musik etwas Einzigartiges enthält, das Herz, Körper und Verstand zugleich anspricht.

TRIPTYCHON Die Idee zu einem dreiteiligen Programm, bei dem jeder Teil symmetrisch aus drei Triostücken besteht, war für mich wichtig, aber nicht vorbedacht. Die drei Sonaten waren die zentralen Elemente der Aufnahme, aber ich wollte weder, dass sie von Stücken ergänzt würden, die als pures Beiwerk wirken, noch dass die gesamte Aufnahme als Patchwork erscheint. Ich habe daher unter den Stücken, die mir am besten gefielen, solche gewählt, durch die die Sonaten klanglich, symbolisch anders zur Geltung kommen. Das war eine ziemlich langwierige Arbeit. Ich hatte mehrere Instrumente zur Verfügung, sie sollten einander entsprechen und in der Abwechslung von Klangfarben und Klangmaterien miteinander harmonisieren.

Diese Symbolik spricht mich natürlich an, aber ich verbinde damit keine weiteren Prätentionen: Ich habe diese Auswahl in aller Bescheidenheit getroffen, sie ist nichts als ein Vorschlag zur Annäherung. Ich spürte, dass dieser Rhythmus den Stücken, die ich aufnehmen wollte, entsprechen könnte. Das traf ein. Heute stelle ich fest, dass diese CD wirklich etwas erzählt und den Hörer zu dem führt, was ich ihm vermitteln möchte. Jedes Stück strahlt schon für sich ein gewisses Gleichgewicht aus, und ihre Zusammenstellung in dieser Form ergibt ein weiteres, umfassenderes Gleichgewicht.

Es ist wundervoll, dass ein großer Teil der Bachschen Musik sich transkribieren lässt – man muss allerdings Klangkombinationen finden, die den Reichtum und die Komplexität des Diskurses nicht mindern. Bach hat seine Musik übrigens als erster transkribiert. Die kontrapunktische Musik eignet sich hervorragend dazu: Es genügt, die Partien so, wie sie geschrieben sind, auf unterschiedlichen Instrumenten zu spielen. Man hört die Musik dann anders, und ihr innerer Reichtum erklingt stets neu.

Was mich bei Transkriptionen interessiert, ist das, was sie an Neuem enthüllen. Für diese Aufnahme haben wir manche Stücke nicht umgeschrieben, sondern schlicht in eine andere Tonart transponiert, oder auch die Stimmen so, wie sie sind, anderen Instrumenten anvertraut als ursprünglich vorgesehen.

Wenn man sich Bachs Orgelmusik anschaut – bei den Chorälen bin ich von den Orgelfassungen ausgegangen, nicht von den Vokalstücken –, dann schließt das Instrument selbst schon unterschiedliche Klangfarben ein, je nach dem Register, für das sich der Interpret entscheidet.

Die Organisten haben bei ihrer Wahl sehr viel Spielraum. Ich habe mir diesen Spielraum zu eigen gemacht, um die Bachsche Musik in Abhängigkeit von dem, was ich sagen wollte, unterschiedlich zu timbrieren. Auch das schließt an die Grammatik und das Vokabular des 17. Jahrhunderts an,

Das Gleichgewicht der Werke und ihre Anordnung zum Triptychon ermöglichten mir, den Unterschied zwischen sakraler und profaner Musik zu vernachlässigen. Zu Bachs Zeiten wurde er ohnehin nicht auf dieselbe Weise wahrgenommen. Die Distanz zwischen diesen Begriffen schafft erst der heutige Blick. Für mich geht von seinen religiösen wie nichtreligiösen Kompositonen in erster Linie viel Kraft aus, bei der die Musik die erste Rolle spielt.

die Bach einsetzt: damals wurde Musik nicht immer für ein bestimmtes Instrument geschrieben, sondern für Stimmen, für Klanglinien in mehr oder weniger festgelegter Stimmlage; es war an den Interpreten, ihr Instrument zu wählen, wie ein Maler seine Farben wählt.

Wichtig ist, dass ein Streichinstrument über mehr Artikulationsmöglichkeiten und harmonische Nuancierungen verfügt als die Orgel. Vielleicht kann ich mehr mit ihm ausdrücken als eine Orgel im Rahmen der existenten Bachschen Transkriptionen ausdrücken würde. Das Streichinstrument wird durch seine Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten zum Bindeglied zwischen Orgel und Stimme.

GLEICHGEWICHT Vor der Aufnahme hatten wir uns mit der Verteilung der Stimmen beschäftigt und sie festgelegt; bei der Einspielung haben wir manchmal eine bestimmte räumliche Verteilung der Instrumente arrangiert, um einige zu bestimmten Zeitpunkten mehr in den Vordergrund zu stellen als andere.

Gleichgewicht will nicht immer heißen drei gleiche Stimmen: die Sonaten zum Beispiel begünstigen die Tenorstimme der Violine (Violoncello piccolo) oder die große Bassgeige (Viola bastarda) gegenüber den beiden anderen Stimmen, die entweder von der Orgel oder dem Cembalo gespielt werden. Bei den Triosonaten haben wir dem Streichinstrument daher diesen natürlichen Vorzug belassen. Die tiefe Klangfarbe des Kontrabasses haben wir dadurch nutzen wollen, dass er die linke Hand des Organisten dupliziert und damit diskret unterstützt und ihrem Spiel mehr Tiefe, mehr Konsistenz verschafft. Bei dieser subtilen Verbindung der Klangfarben, die einander überlagern, aufwerten, ins Licht rücken, wird das Gleichgewicht gewahrt.

Bei dieser Aufnahme hören Sie kein Cello – kein klassisches Cello mit vier Saiten –, sondern drei Instrumente, die aus meiner Zusammenarbeit mit dem Geigenbauer Charles Riché hervorgegangen sind: eine Bratsche (2006), eine Tenorgeige (2003) und eine große Bassgeige (2002).

Seit ich zwanzig Jahre alt bin, haben mich Bachs Sonaten für Viola angezogen. Als ich sie auf einem fünfseitigen Cello spielte, wurde mir bewusst, wie gut das klang. Wegen seines Quintakkords ist dieses Instrument für die Monodie einer kontrapunktischen Komposition wie geschaffen. Die Sonaten BWV 1027 und 1028 lassen sich auf der Tenorgeige, die ich dabei benutze, wunderbar spielen.

Bei der dritten Sonate konnte ich das, was ich ausdrücken wollte, mit diesem Instrument nicht ganz erreichen. Die Grund- und Obertöne der großen Bassgeige stehen zu der Tonart der Sonate (g-moll) in Beziehung, sie wirkte von vornherein adäquat. Dieses Instrument verleiht der Sonate Tiefe und zugleich eine etwas herbe Vitalität. Auf Grund der großen schwingenden Saitenlänge war das Spiel ein wenig akrobatisch, aber in diesem glücklichen Kampf mit dem Instrument liegt vielleicht etwas von dem, was für mich so noch nie zum Ausdruck gebracht worden ist.

Wir befinden uns hier zwischen der Welt der Violinen und der der Violen. Verglichen mit dem viersaitigen Cello sind diese Instrumente fragil und je nach Tonart nicht sehr vielseitig: In manchen Tonarten erzeugen sie mehr Obertöne, in anderen weniger.

Das kleine Instrument schließlich, das in den Chorstücken gespielt wird, die “Bettara“-Bratsche, erinnert an die menschliche Stimme. Seine Spannweite ist gering, wie die einer Stimmpartitur.

Man hört eher ein Timbre, das uns eine Geschichte erzählt, als ein Instrument, das uns ein Stück vorführt.

WORT Bei meiner Beschäftigung mit den Instrumenten lege ich auf die Fähigkeit eines Instruments zu sprechen ebenso viel Wert wie auf die zu singen. Bei den Chorstücken trägt das Instrument dem biblischen Text Rechnung – nicht den Worten. Um diesen Text zu „sprechen“ brauchte ich diese fast übernatürliche Bratschenstimme, die, sehr weit entfernt vom Violoncello, eher einer kleinen Tenorviola verwandt ist.

Um gewisse Zusammenklänge zu erreichen, muss man sich die Worte manchmal „ungeschrieben“ vorstellen, in ihren Sinn eintauchen. Die instrumentale Wiedergabe der Choräle soll den Geist des Gesamttextes übersetzen, nicht den Wortlaut, selbst wenn manche Worte deutlicher hervorzutreten scheinen. Das gibt der Bezeichnung „Interpret“ [das im Französischen auch Dolmetscher bedeutet] und der ganzen Fülle unserer Mission als musikalische Mittler ihren ungeschmälerten Sinn.
