PRÉLUDER & BERCER Surtout depuis Johann Sebastian Bach, on attend qu’un Prélude soit suivi de sa Fugue. Si la fantaisie intervient d’abord, il lui faut une image plus rigoureuse en miroir, une tension constructrice après le désordre et l’attente. Avec Chopin, rien de tel, et le bloc vingt-quatre fois morcelé d’une sensation omniprésente, urgente, qui gouverne impérieusement le Temps, en plie la durée – plus souvent, d’une, deux minutes jusqu’à un exceptionnel cinq ou sept – qu’elle réduit à l’état de fragments guidés par l’esprit d’improvisation, le caprice qui n’obéit qu’à sa propre logique. Et pourtant, on peut vérifier dans ce « vaste » projet un ordonnancement rationnel qui s’inscrit – de façon sophistiquée – dans le cycle des tonalités.

En entreprenant dès 1831 ce parcours, en l’inscrivant sous la protection d’un Bach dont il admire et même chérit l’œuvre, Chopin sait pourtant qu’il ne va pas « continuer » son grand ancêtre, mais donner une autre vision d’un kaléidoscope plus secrètement ordonné. Selon l’esprit de la Fantasie à l’ancienne, il conçoit surtout cette œuvre comme le microcosme de paysages intérieurs pour la plupart placés sous le signe de la brièveté, voire de la fulgurance, un « journal intime » que viendront aussi enrichir des expériences notées en improvisation. Ce « fur et à mesure » se poursuit donc à Paris, et il en vend même pour l’édition une partie déjà réalisée ; puis au bout de sept ans, un voyage semble donner décisive impulsion à l’œuvre.

C’est l’aventure « majorquienne » qui permet, en accéléré, de relire et terminer l’ensemble, tout en intégrant une dramatisation d’épisodes vécus dans l’île où il est allé chercher – en novembre 1838 - avec George Sand un bonheur que la rudesse du climat, les conditions précaires de vie, l’hostilité des habitants mettent vite à mal. Mais le recueil, à travers le douloureux séjour à la Chartreuse de Valldemossa, est achevé trois mois plus tard, et remis pour édition parisienne – elle aura lieu en septembre 1839- à Jules Fontana en janvier 1839.

rapport que les Préludes « vivent » avec le réel de l’inspiration. C’est la fameuse « goutte d’eau » qui aurait hanté, en ce temps d’orage hivernal, le « récit » du poète-musicien : mais doit-on l’écouter dans le 6e, le 8e, le 15e ? L’incertitude rend plausible l’insertion ici ou là, mais connaissant Chopin, on comprend que ce poète n’est pas du genre à « raconter » tel ou tel « accident » directement reconnaissable au sein d’une Nature dont de surcroit, homme de la Ville, il n’adore pas la manifestation pour elle-même, ou comme témoignage-écho d’un Plan divin. Dans les angoisses dont Valldemossa lui offre le spectacle d’orages, de pluies diluviennes et de lumière raréfiée, il lit sa propre histoire en devenir de condamné : « Ma cellule a la forme d’un grand cercueil. On peut hurler… Toujours le silence. ». C’est bien le « paysage, état de l’âme », dont H.F. Amiel trouva en cette époque la définition, lui qui notait en son démesuré Journal intime les infinies variations du moi et du monde… Chopin, lui, n’« exploite » pas sa solitude et ne la renvoie pas sur l’écran : il sublime aussitôt, nous donnant à lire des formes – temps, mouvements, souvenirs – qui valent surtout par elles-mêmes, et s’inscrivent en une précision confinant à l’abstraction, si loin de ce « vague des passions » qui parfois envahit le champ romantique européen, avec trop d’éloquence. Et s’il est frère en poésie, c’est bien du Baudelaire des Fusées, voire du Rimbaud des Illuminations…

Ainsi vaut-il mieux parcourir les 24 Préludes en les reliant sinon à une thématique rigide, du moins à un climat qui les unifie par séquences. Plus « lisiblement », la chevauchée, l’héroïsme, le tumulte enfièvrent un espace du souvenir, celui du poète exilé qui chante sa patrie souffrante mais quittée : 12e, 22e, et probablement 16e, 18e, 24e, en les nuançant de l’héroïsme personnel contre le destin. Un écho de danses « du pays » : 7e, 10e, qui se lie à un adoucissement du sort en revenant à la mémoire, à une transparence peut-être liée au récit de l’enfance : 11e, 13e, 17e, 23e. En contraste absolu, les « lieux » où règnent fébrilité, étrangeté, « rapt » pour l’âme agitée : 1e, 2e (le si incompris par la critique d’époque : « grotesque, injouable » !), 24e. C’est là que l’apparition de la fin (4e : « oh cela c’est la mort ! », dira la Nadja surréaliste) « écrase » le voyageur (20e, ou contrepointée par la violence des

éléments (8e, 14e,), organise le récit d’un opéra sans doute plus intime que descriptifnaturel (le long 15e), ou se lamente à l’infini (6e). Loin de toute « goutte d’eau », le caractère élémental de l’écriture diversifie le propos : liquidité d’un chant du ruisseau (19e, 3e), virevolte aérienne (5e), bloc d’accords telluriques (9e). Ainsi chemine la poésie, dans une aristocratique distanciation d’avec le trop de réel… « Que ne puis-je au moins tuer un Moscovite ! », crie Chopin à son ami Titus quand les Russes nettoient Varsovie : le ministre louis-philippard Sébastiani résume, dit-on, la situation d’une formule qui fera date dans l’Histoire : « L’ordre règne à Varsovie ». « Ô mon pays ! », dira Chopin en sanglotant quand un de ses compatriotes lui joue, plus tard, l’Étude révolutionnaire.

Mais Frédéric, par choix d’une carrière européenne, avait déjà élu Vienne puis Paris quand sa patrie fut écrasée : c’est en exilé impuissant qu’il composa donc pour sa Pologne opprimée. « Il n’a pu être le héros, dit C. Bourniquel : seulement le symbole. » Il se saisit alors de la danse polonaise pour la transformer : « Elle n’est plus avec lui, commente Liszt, l’un de ces défilés où la bonne société faisait la roue et se complaisait dans sa propre admiration. » Sa Polonaise op.44, de 1841, est sans doute moins constamment dramaturgie violente que ses « voisines ». Une question grave et redoublée, une prise de possession du clavier, et s’élance un chant d’élan lyrique. Puis cela bifurque sur un curieux ostinato répétitif, mécanisme qui bute indéfiniment sur lui-même (la musique du XXe se servira d’un tel « sillon fermé » !), pour . qui irrigue la aller rejoindre un chant presque tendre, d’une mélancolie de ce fameux zal sensibilité polonaise ; à travers arpèges et silences, on retrouvera ensuite le chemin héroïque, nuancé d’une valeur quasi chorale, couronnée par la coda qui s’éloigne, scellée d’un accord aigu. Chopin, ainsi, aura traduit la lutte mais peut-être entrevu les prémices d’un apaisement. « Une chanson douce que me chantait ma maman » : pourquoi pas l’évocation populaire en tête de cette Berceuse sans nul artifice, signée en 1845 ? Métaphore d’une eau primordiale ?

Qu’on se rappelle que la maman du pianiste, Justyna – parente ruinée de la comtesse Skarbek – fut aussi celle qui jouait du clavicorde pour son enfant réfugié sous la caisse de 8

l’instrument ? Souple balancement de la barque maternelle, des trilles et rides si légers, des arpèges quand on va changer de versant sur la longue houle, comme un « voyage heureux et mer calme », si protégé comme avant la naissance... La longue mélodie n’est-elle pas surtout dans ses figures d’accompagnement même ? La mère ne fut plus revue par l’exilé français après un voyage à Carlsbad en 1834... La revoici dans l’écriture de cette courte page harmonieuse, et peut-être antidote protecteur pour bercer les angoisses de la chevauchée atonale qui ravage la fin de la 2e Sonate ?

Un accord initial, pour fondation d’un monde que nul voyage réel n’aura pourtant permis de contempler, malgré l’ardeur du désir. Un monde liquide, évidemment, puisque la barcarolle est chant de nautonier vénitien pour visiteurs extasiés et pèlerins de la Beauté. George Sand, qui connut là des amours tumultueuses avec Musset puis le médecin Pagello, en parlait à Chopin, et ç’aurait pu être destination moins lugubre que Majorque ! Un chant sans paroles, nullement anecdotique : délicieux ritardandi, accelerandi infimes, hésitations savamment calculées, puis un léger fugato sur lequel prend appui une navigation d’intense dramaturgie, nouveau calme sur arpèges et trilles qui relance l’éblouissante exultation de la coda… Au fait, dans cette page tant admirée par Ravel, Debussy et Fauré, est-ce uniquement liquidité qui fait songer au sentiment de l’existence vécu par Rousseau dans sa barque de la Ve Rêverie ?

Ou bien aussi, unie à elle, d’une lumière qui baigne, rejaillit et transforme son modèle ? Alors oui, Venise, imaginée, sublimée par l’esprit visionnaire des peintres-poètes comme Guardi, et plus encore Turner qui dissout toute forme trop définie dans un foyer de combustion orange et or où s’inventent les beautés d’un art prophétique…

PRELUDES & BERCEUSE Since Johann Sebastian Bach, especially, the expectation has always been that a prelude will be followed by its fugue. If the element of fantasy comes first, there is need of a more rigorous mirror image, a constructive tension after disorder and expectation. With Chopin, there is nothing of the sort, and the block, split into twenty-four pieces, of an omnipresent, urgent sensation that imperiously governs Time, bends its duration (generally one or two minutes, exceptionally reaching five or seven), which it reduces to the condition of fragments guided by the spirit of improvisation, the caprice that obeys only its own logic.

And yet one may establish the existence in this ‘vast’ project of a rational ordering that is framed – in a sophisticated manner – in the cycle of keys.

When he embarked on this itinerary in 1831, placing it under the protection of Bach, whose œuvre he admired and even cherished, Chopin nevertheless knew that he was not going to ‘continue’ the work of his great forerunner, but would present a different vision of a kaleidoscope, more secretly ordered. Following the spirit of the Fantasie in its older meaning, he conceived this work above all as the microcosm of landscapes mostly characterised by brevity, indeed lightning speed, an ‘intimate journal’ that would also be enriched by written-out experiments in improvisation. He therefore pursued this ‘work in progress’ in Paris, and even sold for publication a portion of it that had already been realised; then, after seven years, a journey seemed to give the work a decisive impetus. This was the ‘Majorcan adventure’, which made it possible, at a greatly accelerated speed, to reread and complete the whole cycle, while also incorporating a dramatisation of episodes experienced on the island where, in November 1838, he had gone with George Sand in search of a happiness that the harshness of the climate, the precarious living conditions 10

and the hostility of the inhabitants swiftly jeopardised. But, thanks to that painful sojourn in the monastery of Valldemossa, the collection was finished three months later, and sent off to Julian Fontana in January 1839 for preparation of the Paris edition, which duly appeared in September of the same year.

An anecdote related by George Sand neatly illustrates the ‘volatile’ and uncertain character of the relationship between the Preludes and their ‘real-life’ inspiration. It is the story of the famous ‘raindrop’ that supposedly haunted the ‘narrative’ of the poet-musician in that period of winter storms: but should one listen out for it in no.6, no.8, or no.15? The uncertainty makes the possibility that he may have inserted the reference here or there plausible; but, knowing Chopin, one realises that he was not the kind of poet to ‘recount’ such-and-such a directly recognisable ‘accident’ in a natural world whose manifestations, moreover, as a city-dweller, he worshipped neither in themselves nor as a testimony or echo of some divine Plan. In the fearful spectacle of storms, torrential rain and rarefied light that Valldemossa offered him, he read his own future as a condemned man: ‘My cell is shaped like a large coffin. One may scream... Always silence.’ Here indeed is the ‘landscape as state of mind’ defined at this period by Henri Frédéric Amiel, who noted in his gigantic Journal intime the infinite variations of the ego and the world. Chopin, for his part, does not ‘exploit’ his solitude and throw it back in our faces: he immediately sublimates it, presenting us with forms – times, movements, recollections – whose value lies above all in themselves, which possess a precision verging on abstraction, remote indeed from that ‘wave of passions’ that sometimes invaded the field of European Romanticism with excessive eloquence. And if Chopin has a brother in poetry, it is the Baudelaire of the Fusées, or even the Rimbaud of Les Illuminations . . .

Hence it is preferable, when one traverses the Twenty-four Preludes, to associate them, if not with a rigid set of topics, at least with a mood that unifies them in sequences. Most

‘legibly’, cavalcades, heroism, tumult stir up a space of memory, that of the exiled poet who sings of the suffering homeland that he has nevertheless departed: nos.12, 22, and probably 16, 18, 24, with the nuance of personal heroism in the face of destiny. An echo of dances ‘from the old country’: no.7, no.10, which is associated with a softening of fate through a return to memory, a transparency perhaps linked to a narrative of childhood in nos.11, 13, 17, 23. Utterly contrasting with this are the ‘places’ where the prevailing climate is feverishness, strangeness, ‘raptus’ for the agitated soul: nos.1, 2 (so misunderstood by the critics of the time: ‘grotesque, unplayable’!), 24. It is there that the apparition of the end (no.4: ‘Oh, that is death!’, the surrealist Breton’s Nadja was to say) ‘crushes’ the traveller (no.20) or, counterpointed by the violence of the elements (no.8, no.14), organises the narration of an opera probably more intimate than descriptive and natural (the extended no.15), or laments ad infinitum (no.6). Far removed from the notion of the ‘raindrop’, the elemental character of the writing diversifies the cycle’s scope: the fluidity of the song of a brook (nos.19, 3), an airy pirouette (no.5), a block of telluric chords (no.9). Thus does poetry go its way, keeping its aristocratic distance from an excess of reality . . .

‘If only I could kill at least one Muscovite!’, exclaimed Chopin to his friend Tytus Woyciechowski when the Russians ‘mopped up’ Warsaw. Louis Philippe’s minister Sébastiani is said to have summed up the situation in a formula that was to go down in history: ‘Order reigns in Warsaw.’ A sobbing Chopin was later to cry ‘O my country!’ when one of his compatriots played him the ‘Revolutionary’ Étude. But Frédéric, having chosen a European career, had already opted for Vienna, then Paris, when his homeland was crushed; it was therefore as a powerless exile that he composed for his oppressed Poland. ‘He could not be its hero,’ said Camille Bourniquel, ‘only its symbol.’ He then seized on the polonaise in order to transform it: ‘With him,’ observed Liszt, ‘it was no longer one of those processions

where high society strutted and revelled in self-admiration.’ His Polonaise op.44 of 1841 is probably less constantly violent in its dramaturgy than its neighbours. A grave question, asked twice, a gesture of taking possession of the keyboard, and a song of lyrical élan soars upwards. Then it branches off into a curious repetitive ostinato, a mechanism that trips over itself indefinitely (the music of the twentieth century was to make use of such ‘locked grooves’!), before flowing into an almost tender melody, its melancholy mirroring the famous al that irrigates the Polish sensibility; then, by way of arpeggios and silences, we return to the path of heroism, now given an almost chorale-like tinge, which is crowned by the coda that fades away and is sealed by a treble chord. Chopin, then, has depicted the struggle but perhaps glimpsed the first signs of a tranquillity to come.

Does the Berceuse, that utterly artless cradle lullaby song written in 1845, not hark back to the folk sung by mothers in every culture? Is it a metaphor of primeval waters? Let us remember that the pianist’s mother Justyna – an impoverished relative of Countess Skarbek – played the clavichord for her child who had taken refuge under the case of the instrument. Here the maternal vessel sways supply, with the lightest of trills and ripples, arpeggios when it crests the long swell; a ‘calm sea and prosperous voyage’, as totally protected as a child before birth . . . Is the long melody not to be found above all inside the figures of its accompaniment? The French exile never saw his mother again after a trip to Carlsbad in 1834. But she is present once more in this brief, harmonious piece, which might perhaps be seen as a protective antidote to lull the fears of the atonal cavalcade that ravages the end of the Second Sonata.

An initial chord, to create a world that no actual journey had ever permitted the composer to contemplate, ardently though he may have desired it. A liquid world, naturally, since the barcarolle is the song of the Venetian boatman for ecstatic visitors and pilgrims in search of Beauty. George Sand, who experienced tumultuous love affairs there with Alfred de Musset,

MENU then with the latter’s doctor Pietro Pagello, told Chopin about the city, and it might have been a less gloomy destination than Majorca! A song without words, in no sense trivial: delicious ritardandos, tiny accelerandos, skilfully calculated hesitations, then a nimble fugato underpinning a navigation of intense dramaturgy, and renewed calm over arpeggios and trills that launches the dazzling exhilaration of the coda . . . In truth, in this piece from 1845, so admired by Ravel, Debussy and FaurÊ, is it only the liquid element that makes one think of the sentiment of existence experienced by Rousseau in his boat, as he describes it in the fifth of his Rêveries du promeneur solitaire? Is it not also, united with the waters, a light that bathes, is reflected in and transforms its model? Yes, this indeed is Venice, imagined, sublimated by the visionary spirit of the poet-painters like Guardi, and still more Turner, who dissolves any too definite contour in a riot of orange and gold combustion in which the beauties of a prophetic art are invented . . .

PRÄLUDIUM & BERCEUSE

Spätestens seit Sebastian Bach erwartet man nach dem Präludium eine Fuge. Wenn die Fantasie zuerst auftritt, bedarf sie nach der Unordnung und der Erwartung eines straffer strukturierten Spiegelbilds, einer schöpferischen Spannung. Nichts dergleichen bei Chopin.

Der vierundzwanzig Mal unterbrochene Satz mit seiner allgegenwärtigen, unaufschiebbaren Spannung, die gebieterisch über den Takt regiert und seine Länge um mindestens um ein, zwei und manchmal sogar fünf oder sieben Minuten verkürzt, sie auf Fragmente reduziert, die der Improvisation folgen, der Laune, die nur ihrer eigenen Logik gehorcht. Und doch lässt sich in diesem umfangreichen Werk eine rationelle Ordnung erkennen, die sich raffiniert in den Zyklus der Tonarten einfügt.

Bereits 1831, als er dieses Werk beginnt und es unter den Schutze Bachs stellt, dessen Werk er bewundert und liebt, weiß Chopin, dass er seinen großen Vorgänger nicht einfach fortsetzen wird, sondern eine andere Vision eines Kaleidoskops vorschlagen wird, das einer unsichtbareren Ordnung folgt. Im Geiste der Fantasie alter Tradition, schafft er dieses Werk als Mikrokosmos innerer Landschaften. Die meisten kennzeichnet ihre Kürze, manchmal wie Geistesblitze, ein „Journal intime“, welches auch Erfahrungen bereichern, die aus Improvisationen notiert wurden. Dieses „Nach und nach“ setzt sich in Paris fort und er verkauft sogar einen bereits fertigen Teil an den Verlag, dann, nach sieben Jahren, scheint eine Reise dem Werk den entscheidenden Impuls zu geben. Es ist das „mallorquinische Abenteuer“, das es ermöglicht, es als Ganzes im Schnelldurchgang noch einmal durchzulesen und abzuschließen. Zugleich fasst er einige Erlebnisse auf der Insel in Musik, wohin er im November 1838 mit George Sand gereist war, dort eine glückliche

Zeit zu verbringen. Ein Glück, welches das raue Klima, die prekären Lebensbedingungen, die Feindseligkeit der Inselbewohner schnell zunichtemachten. Aber in der schmerzlichen Zeit im Kartäuserkloster von Valldemossa wurde die Sammlung in drei Monaten fertig.

Im Januar 1839 wird sie Jules Fontana für den Verlag in Paris mitgegeben, wo sie im September desselben Jahres erscheint.

Eine Anekdote von George Sand veranschaulicht diesen „flüchtigen“ und unsicheren Charakter der Beziehungen, den die Préludes mit der Wirklichkeit der Inspiration unterhalten. So spuke der berühmte „Regentropfen“ aus dieser Zeit der Wintergewitter durch die „Erzählung“ des Musikers und Dichters. Aber hört man ihn nun in der 6., der 8. oder der 15. Prélude? Man weiß es nicht und so kann man es sich vorstellen, dass er hier oder da eingeflochten wurde. Aber wer Chopin kennt, weiß, dass es nicht seine Art ist, Naturereignisse als Zeugnis eines göttlichen Plans zu zitieren oder direkt erkennbar zu „erzählen“. Dies umso mehr, da er als Stadtmensch kein Verehrer der Natur um ihrer selbst willen ist. In seiner Seelenqual, die Valldemossa ihm als Schauspiel von Gewittern, sintflutartigen Regengüssen und seltenem Licht darbietet, liest er sein eigenes kommendes Schicksal eines zum Tode Verdammten: „Die Zelle hat die Form eines hohen Sargs. Man könnte schreien... und doch still.“ Es ist die „Landschaft als Seelenzustand“, die H. F. Amiel damals definierte, der in seinem monumentalen Tagebuch die unendlichen Variationen des Ichs und der Welt notierte... Aber Chopin schlachtet seine Einsamkeit nicht aus, projiziert sie nicht auf eine Leinwand. Er sublimiert sie sofort und gibt uns Formen, Takte, Bewegungen, Erinnerungen zu lesen, deren Wert in erster Linie in ihnen selbst liegt und deren Präzision schon beinahe zur Abstraktion gereicht, so weit entfernt ist sie von diesem „Unbestimmten in den Leidenschaften“, die die europäische Romantik manchmal mit ihrem Überfluss an Beredsamkeit überschwemmt. Und wenn er Brüder in der Dichtkunst hat, so sind es Baudelaire und seine Fusées, Rimbaud und seine Illuminations.

So sollte man bei seinem Streifzug durch die 24 Préludes sie lieber mit einer strengen Thematik oder zumindest mit einem Klima verknüpfen, das sie zu einer Bildfolge vereint. „Lesbarer“ sind der Ritt, das Heldenhafte, der Tumult, die einen Raum in der Erinnerung in Besitz nehmen, den des Dichters, der seine Heimat besingt, eine Heimat, die leidet, die er aber verlassen hat. So die Préludes 12, 22 und wahrscheinlich 16, 18 und 24, in feinen Schattierungen persönlichen Heroismus gegen das Schicksal. Ein Echo von Tänzen aus der Heimat hört man in den Préludes 7 und 10. Ihre Erinnerung macht das schwere Los erträglicher, bis hin zur Transparenz, die vielleicht mit dem Wachrufen der Kindheit in den Préludes 11, 13, 17 und 23 verknüpft sind. Im totalen Gegensatz dazu stehen die fieberhaften, fremdarten „Orte“, „Vereinnahmung“ der bewegten Seele in den Préludes 1 und 2 (für die die zeitgenössischen Kritiker wenig Verständnis aufbrachten: „grotesk, nicht spielbar“!) und der 24.Hier wird der Reisende von der Erscheinung des Endes (Nr. 4: „Oh das! Das ist der Tod!“, wird die surrealistische Nadja sagen) erdrückt (20) oder der Erzählstrang einer wahrscheinlich eher intimen als beschreibenden, naturbelassenden Oper (die lange 15) von der Gewalt der Elemente kontrapunktiert (8 und 14) oder verliert er sich in endlosem Wehklagen (6). Weit entfernt vom „Regentropfen“ verleiht das Elementale der Schreibweise der Aussage Vielfalt: das Flüssige eines singenden Bachs (19 und 3), luftiges Wirbeln (5), erdhafte Akkorde (9). So geht die Poesie ihren Weg, wobei sie aristokratisch Abstand von zu viel Wirklichem hält... „Ach könnte ich auch nur einen Moskowiter erwürgen!“, schreit Chopin vor seinem Freund Titus aus, als die Russen Warschau säubern. Der Minister von Louis-Philippe Sebastiani fasste die Lage, so sagt man, in einem Satz zusammen, der in die Geschichte eingegangen ist: „Ordnung herrscht in Warschau“. „Oh mein Land!“ wird Chopin sagen und weinen, als einer seiner Landsleute ihm später die Etude Révolutionnaire vorspielt. Aber Frédéric hatte sich bereits für eine europäische Karriere und damit für Wien und später Paris entschieden, 18

als seine Heimat niedergetreten wird. So komponiert er als ohnmächtiger Exilant für sein unterdrücktes Polen. Er konnte nicht der Held sein, sagt C. Bourniquel, nur das Symbol.“ Er bemächtigt sich der polnischen Tänze und verwandelt sie. „Bei ihm, sagt Liszt, sieht man nicht mehr die bessere Gesellschaft wie die Pfauen im Selbstgefallen der Bewunderung ihrer selbst defilieren.“ Seine Polonaise op. 44 von 1841 ist ohne Zweifel weniger von wuchtiger Dramaturgie geprägt als ihre „Verwandten“. Nach einer wiederholten tiefen Frage, nach Besitzergreifung des Klaviers erhebt sich ein Gesang von lyrischer Dynamik.

Dann biegt die Musik in ein sonderbar repetitives ostinato ein, ein Mechanismus, der immer wieder auf sich selber stößt (die Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts wird sich solcher „Plattensprünge“ bedienen!), um dann zu einem beinahe sanften Gesang gelangen. Diese Melancholie spiegelt den berühmten zal wider, der das polnische Gefühl durchtränkt.

Nach einigen Arpeggien und Pausen findet man dann zurück auf den heroischen Weg, nuanciert von einer chorähnlichen Klangfarbe, gekrönt von der sich entfernenden Coda, besiegelt von einem Akkord in hoher Tonlage. So hat Chopin den Kampf in Musik gefasst, wobei ihm aber vielleicht auch Vorzeichen einer Beruhigung erschienen. „Une chanson douce que me chantait ma maman“. Dieser beliebte Chanson-Titel könnte durchaus über dieser Berceuse (Wiegenlied) ohne jeden unnötigen Schnörkel aus dem Jahre 1845 stehen. Eine Metapher für Wasser als alleiniges Urprinzip? Man erinnere sich, dass die Maman des Pianisten, Justyina – eine verarmte Verwandte der Gräfin Skarbek – auch diejenige war, die Klavichord für ihren Buben spielte, das sich unter dem Instrument versteckt hatte. Das weiche Hin und Her der wiegenden mütterlichen Arme, so leichte Triller und Kräuselungen, Arpeggien, wenn es auf die andere Seite der langgezogenen Wellendünung geht, wie eine „glückliche Reise bei ruhiger See“, so sicher und geschützt wie vor der Geburt... Findet sich die lange Melodie nicht vor allem in diesen Begleitfiguren selbst? Der Exilant in Frankreich sah seine Mutter nach einer Reise nach Karlsbad im Jahre 1834 nie wieder... In der Schrift dieser kurzen harmonischen Seite ist sie wieder

MENU da, vielleicht als schützendes Gegengift, um die Seelenqualen zu beruhigen, die in dem atonalen Ritt zum Ausdruck kommen, der das Ende der Zweiten Sonate verwüstet.

Ein erster Akkord als Grundstein einer Welt, die trotz des brennenden Wunsches keinem Reisenden in der Wirklichkeit jemals zu sehen gegeben wurde. Eine flüssige Welt versteht sich, denn die Barcarolle ist das Lied der venezianischen Gondolieri für entzückte Besucher und Pilger auf der Suche nach Schönheit. George Sand, die dort stürmische Liebesaffären mit Musset und später mit dem Arzt Pagello hatte, erzählte Chopin davon. Es wäre ein weniger düsteres Reiseziel gewesen als Mallorca! Ein wortloser und keineswegs anekdotischer Gesang: köstliche Ritardandi, winzige Accelerandi, genau kalkuliertes Zögern, dann ein leichtes Fugato, mit dem eine Seereise von intensiver Dramaturgie beginnt, erneute Stille nach Arpeggien und Trillern, als Auftakt für die berauschende Erregung der Coda... Aber ist es wirklich allein das Flüssige in diesem von Ravel, Debussy und Fauré so bewunderten Seite, das an das Lebensgefühl erinnert, das Rousseau in seiner fünften Träumerei in seinem Boot erlebt? Oder ist es auch ein mit dieser Flüssigkeit einhergehendes Licht, das sein Modell überflutet, auf es zurückfällt und es verändert? Also ja, Venedig, wie es der visionäre Geist von Malerpoeten wie Guardi sieht und sublimiert, und noch mehr Turner, der jegliche allzu genau definierte Form in einem orange- und goldfarbenen Feuer auflöst, in dem die Schönheit einer prophetischen Kunst entsteht.

The overarching objective of the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music is to inspire the most talented musicians of a younger generation to strive towards a full artistic maturity and to create opportunities for them to attend masterclasses and workshops led by renowned mentors in performance, composition, conducting, as well as various forms of human sciences. The heart of the Centre is a concert hall with the supreme acoustic qualities. Only natural timber – oak and spruce – was used in cladding, while vibro-acoustic aspects were executed in consultation with Mßller-BBM, a world leader in room and building acoustics. As the result, the concert hall is among a handful of prime concert venues in Europe, which is attested to by both renowned guest artists and the leading recording experts. The mastermind behind the project and the patron of the Centre is the acclaimed composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki. It was his goal to create a platform where students are able to establish close connections with artists and scholars, which in turn would serve as a stepping stone towards a further intellectual and creative exploration of their own.
