the VeiL BetWeen the aUDiBLe anD the VisiBLe by martin Zenck bereshit for large ensemble (2011/2102) Silence: out of a barely audible, primordial background, like the beginning of the world, like the sounds preceding the spoken voices in Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Lingual – his subtitle for his Requiem für einen jungen Dichter: so begins Pintscher’s orchestral work bereshit , that shares its central note, D, with Zimmermann’s work. A process, a proceeding, in which a scarcely palpable utterance takes a latent form, more a feeling than a definite presence, a searching for expression rather than its materialization. Only much later will a clear musical shape be achieved, polarized around the work’s central notes D and E flat. Before that the dominating character is of a lack of contour, scarcely the vaguest outline – not even in the solo sections for the deep-voiced alto flute, the bass clarinet, solo violin, solo trumpet, and contrabassoon. Even here, the G-Flute merely indicates, with a barely perceptible exhalation of indistinct notes in its low register: a primal breathing, and out of it emerges the atmosphere of an ethereal presence. The beginning is all static, nebulous sound, from which very subtly differentiated filigree figures and figurations branch out and detach themselves. Then a series of appearances from alternatingly dominant solo instruments: bass clarinet, flute, solo trumpet, and above all the solo violin with its superrefined articulations, continually erasing their own traces, falling timidly silent. Step by step, a path to the expression of speech opens up. After a long evolution it moves towards a note, a two-note chord, the minor second D/E flat, towards a clearly-contoured sound, through immediate repetitions of notes and sonorities firmly holding their place in time, bringing time almost to a standstill. Twice a clear connection is made between distantly separated sections of the work, through a multi-cluster that is progressively constricted, narrowing until only two notes remain, just a microtone apart (D sharp/E flat – bars 128 18

Songs from Solomon’s garden for baritone and chamber orchestra (2009) Here Matthias Pintscher’s work has a distinct underlying note of transcendence, an immateriality of sound – independent of any religious or spiritual beliefs. It manifests itself not only through its obvious reference to the Twombly-esque ‘curtain’ of the Treatise on the 19
ENGLISH
and 399, in both cases played by the harps). The structural arch of the work has less of a clear-cut ending than a gradual coming to a halt, just as the opening similarly materializes out of nothing. Yet this is no creatio ex nihilo – there is always something there, something preconceived and pre-sounding, as in Schubert’s late, final Sonata in B flat – music that even before it actually starts, already seems to be in motion. The very concept of ‘beginning’ is called into question here, not so much as a literary-critical poetics of Beginning – but rather a poetics based on the assumption that nothing can be assumed, and that an explicit beginning may precede the starting point. Here perhaps lies the work’s relationship with the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament. Clearly, composer Matthias Pintscher’s work does not pretend to narrate the story of Creation: instead it reconstructs the traces and spoors that lead back to something that exists before language, before the mastery of any kind of utterance. It is a process in which something that needs to be expressed in sound is drawn, driven out of the body with the aid of the hand, and brought painfully across the lips – if it gets that far, rather than remaining enclosed within. In this work’s concentration on what can only barely be heard, we must remember that the concept of hearing in the tradition of the Jewish synagogue is opposed to the Platonic or Neoplatonic traditions, in which vision alone is a privileged organ of knowledge. Seeing serves the outward perception, but hearing is for an inward perception. Matthias Pintscher’s work bereshit – its title is a Hebrew word for ‘beginning’ found in the Torah – is about being aware of a sense of hearing without any attempt at the pictorial, but closely related to the breath, and to the tactile nature of the music.
Veil, but generally in the way the sound is pared down, reduced to hardly sounding at all, then to being no longer audible. And so faint sonorities are drawn forth from out of a silent background horizon into an acoustically perceptible foreground, repeatedly referring back to the rearward horizon before vanishing into it again. In the Song of Songs, that begins ‘I am a rose of Sharon, a lily (a rose) of the valleys’ – a text from the Megillah ‘Shir Hashirim’ (Chapter II) that the composer sets in the original Hebrew – the focus is once again on the hidden and the visible: the concealment of love, and its visual revelation (the love of God, the love between human beings). There is a focus too on the script (legible only with the eyes) and on the way the oral intonations of the spoken language affect the chanted declamation, as for example in Rabbi Weisblum’s reading of the Hebrew. Pintscher here clearly follows the melodic intonations so essential to a musical setting of any tongue – different for every language, with specific consonantal patterns leading to typical configurations of sound, such as alliteration and assonance. Weisblum’s reading, already referred to, translates pure speech into a melismatic, subtly nuanced psalmody, transmuting the word that is read and spiritually embodied into gestic and rhythmic phonetics. And so this work by Matthias Pintscher can be understood as his musical rendering of a declamation of this greatest of all love songs, in which the Hebrew language’s rhythmicized, gestic spoken melody shapes the baritone’s vocal enunciation, which in turn infuses the instrumental writing. The extensive central section is particularly important: the baritone falls silent, and we hear a purely musical expression of mutual love; as a consequence of this elemental encounter the baritone now re-enters with a completely altered tone: more reticent, yet fulfilled. Here we can find the belated echo of a quite different composer, Stefan Wolpe, who in 1939, living in exile in Palestinian Jerusalem, wrote Six Songs from the Hebrew, ending with the Song of Songs.

Uriel for cello and piano (2011/12) Uriel is the angel guardian of the planets, the angel of light and of knowledge, but also the angel of punishment who expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. But Uriel is above all a remarkable painting created in 1955 by Barnett Newman, at a time when the expressionist abstract painter felt isolated from his contemporaries, and was having difficulty in painting at all. On the canvas we see the juxtaposition of a milky bluish-green and a dark brown, separated by lines that divide, but also connect. We can perceive an echo of the Kabbalah, and sense the backward glance of the artist at his own work, at death, at life – but we can also see an allusion to that other outcast, Uriel da Costa. After Now 1 and 2, for the piano and cello respectively – their titles also taken from Newman – Matthias Pintscher has made Newman’s Uriel the instrumental and motivic reference point for his Profiles of light. The third piece in the cycle, but the first to be composed, the composer has said that Uriel preserves ‘the lines of thickness and the different colours’ of Newman’s canvas, its palette revealing ‘an entire universe of sounds’, with the whole painting emanating a sense of suffering: ‘The closer Newman got to death, the more luminous his work became.’ After a long cello solo, the timbres and registers mutually respond, merging together on certain notes, reaching out towards the light, sliding from one clef to the other. In the course of the changing tempi, static and impulsive rhythms comb the surfaces, pulling at the threads; here the thickness is a melodic contour of varying width, and the degree of opaqueness or transparency depends both on the chordal writing (featuring superimposed fourths) as well as on the playing techniques, such as the use of harmonics and the way the bow is placed on the strings. At the mid-point, a brief climax disrupts the ultra-sensitive nuances – a demarcation line at the heart of the piece, an axis comparable to those ‘zips’ that, according to Newman, generally unite his works rather than sub-dividing them. 21

I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters. As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love. His left hand is under my head, and his right hand doth embrace me. I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please. The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills. My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice. My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away. O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely. Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes. My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies. Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.
