Aux origines de ce projet ambitieux, The Tempest (1611) de William Shakespeare (1564-1616) s’est imposé à moi pour exprimer les différents aspects de notre recherche et de notre travail. Tout d’abord, tout comme cet opus testamentaire et emblématique du dramaturge anglais explore les multiples facettes de la complexité humaine, notre programme traverse librement la diversité des époques et des styles musicaux, sans se limiter aux œuvres écrites pour la pièce. Cette large exploration du répertoire, miroir de l’esprit pluriel de The Tempest, offre pleine licence à l’émotion et fonde l’identité de notre compagnie.

L’autre point de rencontre fondamental entre notre travail et la tragicomédie de Shakespeare est l’importance accordée à la nature et à ses éléments, l’attrait d’un autre monde et de l’inconnu – le titre de la pièce et le nom de notre compagnie en témoignent d’emblée. À travers nos choix musicaux se déroulent les paysages imaginaires de l’île enchantée, se traduit la psychologie de certains personnages, s’incarnent des allégories… À l’écoute de l’enregistrement, l’auditeur retrouvera la dramaturgie originelle, mais n’en verra pas pour autant l’exacte illustration : la pluralité des approches et le croisement des époques, des esthétiques et des langages – fruits d’un fin travail de transcription de l’atmosphère et de l’esprit de l’œuvre – créent un univers fantastique, une île qui nous est propre et reflète notre interprétation de The Tempest. Cet assemblage musical a priori déroutant échappe ainsi à la paraphrase, stimule l’imaginaire et provoque un éveil constant et inconscient de l’auditeur, plongé comme en une sorte de récit de voyage aux multiples conteurs.

Ici réside une autre ambition propre à notre compagnie : perturber notre tranquillité afin d’exciter l’esprit et de l’emporter vers un ailleurs inconnu, de la même façon que Shakespeare, par son voyage en terre étrangère, pousse à l’introspection et la réflexion.

FAIRE SENS DANS LA DIVERSITÉ DES RÉPERTOIRES C’est la Tempest de Matthew Locke (1621-1677) qui m’a convaincu d’associer des musiques aux langages parfois très éloignés. Les pièces instrumentales ici sélectionnées, conçues pour l’opéra inspiré par The Tempest de Thomas Shadwell (1642-1692), ne sont en effet pas narratives et ont le pouvoir, supérieur à celui de décrire, de suggérer des actions ou des atmosphères de la pièce. Locke avait choisi un ordre très précis dans la version de 1674, que j’ai maintenu ou perturbé afin de trouver un sens propre à l’histoire de notre temps. Cette même version regroupait des airs, récits, pièces instrumentales, chansons et chœurs composés par des contemporains de Locke. Ce genre d’opéra collectif, alors fréquent, m’a conforté dans mon choix d’un assemblage bigarré. J’en ai gardé la touchante plainte amoureuse de la Dorinda’s Song de James Hart (1647-1718) et la Dance of Fantastick Spirits de l’Anglo-Italien Giovanni Battista Draghi (1640-1708), particulièrement évocatrice des déchaînements de la tempête.

Concernant l’instrumentation, je me suis inspiré des usages en vigueur en Angleterre et en France à cette époque, mais aussi d’autres opéras de Locke. Il m’a paru naturel de rehausser les couleurs de l’orchestre selon le caractère des pièces et leur situation dans l’intrigue afin d’intensifier leur tempérament. J’ai également ajouté librement une partie de percussions : la majeure partie de ces pièces étant des danses inspirées de la musique populaire, ce mélange aurait pu avoir lieu à l’époque de Locke.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) est l’autre compositeur anglais baroque auquel je me suis intéressé, l’un des plus shakespeariens du XVIIe siècle mais aussi des plus intemporels. On a longtemps pensé qu’il avait écrit une musique pour le semi-opéra de Shadwell – à tort, mais cela ne retire en rien à l’évidence dramatique de sa musique, notamment de The Fairy Queen, inspiré du Songe d’une nuit d’été de Shakespeare. Il paraît évident que Purcell connaissait parfaitement The Tempest. J’ai voulu retenir ici sa musique sacrée plus que sa musique de scène. Écrite en majeure partie autour de 1680-1682, quelques années après la Tempest de Locke, elle est à mon sens sa plus belle, sa plus intime du point de vue du contrepoint, de la pureté de la

ligne et de l’intensité. Elle m’a semblé traduire la part universelle et spirituelle de l’œuvre de Shakespeare – une sorte d’allégorie de la vision du Bien et du Mal de Prospero ou de Caliban. Et la sobriété confondante de Hear my prayer m’a immédiatement évoqué l’ultime monologue-profession de foi de Prospero.

En effectuant un grand saut dans le temps, j’ai débusqué le singulier Frank Martin (1890-1974). Pianiste et claveciniste, défenseur de la musique baroque, notamment de celle de Bach, il a enrichi le répertoire choral a capella du XXe siècle de deux chefs-d’œuvre : l’imposante Messe à double chœur (1922) et les superbes Songs of Ariel (1950), tirées de The Tempest de Shakespeare. En 1952, il écrira tout un opéra sur le livret de The Tempest : Der Sturm. Il y intégrera en l’état ses pièces chorales pour figurer les interventions d’Ariel, exécutées par un chœur depuis les coulisses. Shakespeare lui-même souhaitait que certains passages d’Ariel soient chantés. J’ai donc choisi d’intégrer ces cinq pièces, imbriquées de façon très précise dans le déroulement du programme. Tout comme les œuvres instrumentales de Locke, les Songs of Ariel rythment l’intrigue et harmonisent l’ensemble. De nature descriptive, intrigante, colorée et souriante, elles reflètent parfaitement la légèreté et l’impalpable présence de l’esprit des airs.

Certainement très inspiré par la musique vocale de Frank Martin, Philippe Hersant (né en 1948) manifeste lui aussi un certain amour pour la musique anglaise, notamment celle du XVIe siècle. Avec Falling Star (2005), profondément mélancolique et marqué par la présence de la viole de gambe, il rend hommage aux grands madrigalistes anglais. Hersant y convoque deux contemporains de Shakespeare, auteurs de poèmes métaphysiques évoquant leur vision allégorique de la mort et du surnaturel : John Donne (1572-1631) et Henry King (1592-1669). L’œuvre de Hersant s’articule autour de la dualité des deux poèmes, l’un chanté par les femmes l’autre par les hommes. Les voix se rejoignent ensuite dans un climax lumineux qui s’affaiblit avant de mener à une conclusion apaisée.

L’univers musical de cet enregistrement prend un tout autre caractère avec les œuvres de Thierry Pécou (né en 1965). Dans A Circle in the Sand (2001), écrit sur un court passage shakespearien mêlant moquerie, rire, peur, effroi et folie, le compositeur fait du violon et des deux chœurs des outils de bruitage, cris ou sons indéterminés issus d’un ailleurs et d’un temps très lointains. Syllabes courtes, chants d’oiseaux, sifflements et sonorités « aztèques » construisent un décor halluciné, une véritable fresque picturale soulignant une part étrange de Shakespeare.

La seconde pièce, Pour un rituel imaginaire (1991), étonne par son effectif : le timbre chaud et suave des trois flûtes à bec basses – ces mêmes instruments utilisés pour les musiques de Locke – les rapproche inévitablement des flûtes en bois de certaines tribus amérindiennes. L’œuvre porte tout en son nom : elle évoque un moment de la pièce à part, un espace sacré, un rituel chanté et dansé. Elle est ce masque imaginaire (spectacle théâtral, musical et dansé en vogue dans l’Angleterre au XVIIe siècle) que développe Shakespeare au quatrième acte. Les flûtes prennent la forme de ces divinités mythologiques baroques : du théâtre dans le théâtre.

OUR IMAGINARY ISLAND William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest (1611), which lies at the origin of this ambitious project, struck me as the ideal vehicle to express the different aspects of our work. First of all, just as this testamentary and emblematic play by the English dramatist explores the multiple facets of human complexity, so our programme freely traverses a wide variety of periods and musical styles, without restricting itself to works actually written for the play. This wide-ranging exploration of the repertory, mirroring the plural spirit of The Tempest, gives free rein to emotion and is the founding element in the identity of our company.

The other fundamental meeting point between our work and Shakespeare’s tragicomedy is the importance accorded to nature and its elements, the appeal of another world and of the unknown – as the title of the play and the name of our company at once make clear. Through our choice of music, the imaginary landscapes of the enchanted island unfold, the psychology of certain characters is depicted, allegories take on flesh and blood . . .

Anyone who listens to this recording will recognise the original dramaturgy, yet will not hear an exact illustration of it: the plurality of approaches and the mixture of periods, aesthetics and languages – the result of a delicate process of transcription of the atmosphere and spirit of the work – create a fantastic universe, an island that is uniquely ours and reflects our interpretation of The Tempest. Hence this musical assemblage, disconcerting on the face of it, evades paraphrase, stimulates the imagination, and keeps the listener constantly though unconsciously on the alert, plunged as it were into a traveller’s tale told by multiple narrators.

Here resides another specific ambition of our company: to disturb our tranquillity in order to stimulate the mind and carry it off into the unknown, in just the same way as Shakespeare, with his voyage into terra incognita, prompts us to introspection and reflection.

MAKING SENSE OF THE DIVERSITY OF REPERTORIES It was the Tempest music of Matthew Locke (1621-77) that persuaded me to associate pieces of music whose languages are sometimes very remote from each other. For the instrumental pieces selected here, written for the opera based on The Tempest by Thomas Shadwell (1642-92), are not narrative, and have the power – superior to that of mere description – of suggesting action or atmospheres found in the play. Locke chose a very precise order in the version of 1674, which I have preserved or disrupted as necessary in order to find a meaning appropriate to the history of our time. Shadwell’s version assembled airs, recitatives, instrumental pieces, songs and choruses composed by contemporaries of Locke. This type of collective opera, frequent at the time, confirmed me in my choice of a motley collection of music.

From Shadwell’s version I kept the touching lover’s complaint Dorinda’s Song by James Hart (1647-1718) and the Dance of Fantastick Spirits by the Anglo-Italian Giovanni Battista Draghi (1640-1708), particularly evocative of the raging storm.

In matters of instrumentation, I have based my work on current usage in England and France at this period, notably in other stage works by Locke. It seemed natural to enhance the colours of the orchestra according to the character of the pieces and their situation in the plot in order to intensify their mood.

I also freely added percussion parts: since the majority of these pieces are dances with roots in folk music, this could well have been the practice in Locke’s time.

Henry Purcell (1659-95) is the other English Baroque composer to whom I turned, one of the most Shakespearean of the seventeenth century but also one of the most timeless. It was long thought that he had written music for Shadwell’s semi-opera – mistakenly, as it happens, but that takes nothing away from the dramatic aptness of his music, and notably of The Fairy Queen, based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It seems obvious that Purcell must have known The Tempest very well.

Here I chose to use his sacred works rather than his music for the stage. The church music, mostly written around 1680-82, a few years after Locke’s Tempest, is in my opinion his finest and most intimate in terms of counterpoint, purity of line, and intensity. It seems to me to convey the universal and spiritual content of Shakespeare’s work – a sort of allegory of the vision of Good and Evil as depicted in Prospero or Caliban.

And the spellbinding sobriety of Hear my prayer immediately suggested Prospero’s final monologueprofession of faith to me.

Making a huge leap in time, I lighted on the highly individual Frank Martin (1890-1974). A pianist and harpsichordist, a champion of Baroque music, notably that of Bach, he enriched the a cappella choral repertory of the twentieth century with two masterpieces: the imposing Mass for double choir (1922) and the superb Songs of Ariel (1950), whose texts come from Shakespeare’s Tempest. In 1952 he wrote an entire opera with a libretto based on the play: Der Sturm. He incorporated his choral pieces in this, unchanged, to represent the interventions of Ariel, performed by an offstage chorus. Shakespeare himself wanted certain passages of Ariel’s part to be sung. I therefore chose to insert these five pieces in the programme, very carefully interwoven at specific points. Like the instrumental pieces by Locke, the Songs of Ariel punctuate the plot and harmonise the entire programme. Descriptive, intriguing, colourful and benign, they perfectly reflect the lightness and impalpable presence of this ‘airy spirit’. The vocal music of Frank Martin was certainly a powerful source of inspiration to Philippe Hersant (born in 1948), who has also shown a certain love for English music, notably that of the sixteenth century. In Falling Star (2005), profoundly melancholic and characterised by the presence of the viola da gamba, he pays tribute to the great English madrigalists. Hersant sets two contemporaries of Shakespeare, authors of metaphysical poems that evoke their allegorical vision of death and the supernatural: John Donne (1572-1631) and Henry King (15921669). Hersant’s work is articulated around the duality of the two poems, one sung by women, the other by men. Then the voices join forces in a luminous climax that dies away and leads to a calmer conclusion.

The musical universe of this recording takes on a quite different character with the works of Thierry Pécou (born in 1965). In A Circle in the Sand (2001), a setting of a short passage from Shakespeare’s play mingling mockery, laughter, fear, dread and madness, the composer turns the violin and the two choirs into bruitist devices, producing indeterminate cries or sounds come from another, very distant place and time. Short syllables, birdsong, whistling and ‘Aztec’ sonorities construct a hallucinatory decor, a genuinely pictorial scene emphasising an exotic side to Shakespeare.

The second piece, Pour un rituel imaginaire (For an imaginary ritual, 1991), is written for most unusual forces: the warm, mellow timbre of the three bass recorders – the same instruments used for the music of Locke – inevitably makes one think of the wooden flutes of certain Amerindian tribes. The work’s name says all one needs to know: it evokes a special moment of the play, a sacred space, a ritual in song and dance. It is the imagined masque (an entertainment combining theatre, music and dance that was in vogue in seventeenth-century England) that Shakespeare elaborates in the fourth act. The flutes assume the form of these Baroque mythological divinities: a play within the play.

UNSERE IMAGINÄRE INSEL Das diesem ehrgeizigen Projekt zugrundeliegende Stück „The Tempest“ (Der Sturm, 1611) von William Shakespeare (1564-1616) hat sich mir geradezu aufgedrängt, um so die verschiedenen Aspekte unserer Forschung und unserer Arbeit zum Ausdruck bringen zu können. Genauso wie das letzte und sinnbildhafte Opus des englischen Dramatikers die zahlreichen Facetten der komplexen menschlichen Persönlichkeit erkundet, so durchmisst unser Programm frei die verschiedenen musikalischen Epochen und Stilrichtungen und beschränkt sich dabei nicht auf die eigentlichen Vertonungen des Stückes.

Diese breit angelegte Erforschung des Repertoires, Spiegel der thematischen Vielfalt von Shakespeares Stück, lässt den Emotionen freie Bahn und begründet auch die Identität unseres Ensembles.

Der zweite wesentliche Punkt einer Verbindung zwischen unserer Arbeit und Shakespeares Tragikomödie besteht in der Bedeutung, die der Natur und ihrer Elemente zugemessen wird, die Verlockung einer anderen Welt und des Unbekannten - der Titel des Stückes sowie der Name unseres Ensembles belegen dies auf Anhieb. In den von uns ausgewählten Musikstücken entfalten sich die imaginären Landschaften der verzauberten Insel, es kommt auch die seelische Verfassung mancher handelnden Personen zum Tragen, da verkörpern sich Allegorien...

Beim Anhören der Aufnahme kann der Zuhörer die ursprüngliche Dramaturgie erkennen, allerdings nicht als genaue Spiegelung: Die Vielfalt der Ansätze und die Verzahnung der Epochen, der jeweils andersartigen Ästhetik und Tonsprachen – Ergebnis einer subtilen Übertragung der Atmosphäre und des Geistes des Werkes - erschaffen eine Fantasiewelt, eine Insel, die uns zu eigen ist und die unsere Interpretation von „The Tempest“ widerspiegelt. Diese zunächst einmal verwirrend erscheinende musikalische Zusammensetzung entgeht so der Paraphrase, regt die Fantasie an und verursacht ein ständiges und unbewusstes Wachsein des Hörers, der in eine Art Reisebericht mit etlichen Erzählern eintaucht.

Hier liegt ein weiterer Anspruch unseres Ensembles: Wir streben die „Ruhestörung“ an, zur Anregung des Geistes und zur Mitnahme in Unbekanntes, in der gleichen Weise wie Shakespeare, der durch seine Reise in fremde Gefilde zu Introspektion und Nachdenken auffordert.

Mit unterschiedlichen Repertoires Sinn stiften Matthew Lockes (1621-1677) Stück „The Tempest“ hat mich dazu gebracht, Musikstücke mit manchmal sehr entfernten Tonsprachen miteinander zu kombinieren.

Die hier gewählten Instrumentalstücke, die für die von Thomas Shadwells (1642-1692) „The Tempest“ inspirierte Oper geschaffen wurden, sind in der Tat nicht narrativ, aber sie sind in der Lage, Handlungen und Stimmungen anzudeuten, was noch besser ist als diese genau zu beschreiben. Locke hatte eine ganz bestimmte Reihenfolge in der Fassung von 1674 gewählt, welche ich beibehalten oder verändert habe, um einen uns für uns Heutige zeitgemäßen Sinn zu finden. Die Fassung bestand aus von Zeitgenossen Lockes komponierten Melodien, rezitativischen Elementen, Instrumentalstücken, Liedern und Chören. Diese von einem „Kollektiv“ geschaffene Oper (was zu dieser Zeit häufig vorkam) hat mich darin bestärkt, hier auch eine „bunte Mischung“ zu kreieren. So habe ich etwa die anrührende Liebesklage Dorinda’s Song von James Hart (1647-1718) sowie den Dance of Fantastick Spirits des Anglo-Italieners Giovanni Battista Draghi (16401708) übernommen, da dieser Tanz die aufgewühlten Elemente eines Sturmes besonders gut illustriert.

In Bezug auf die Instrumentierung habe ich mich von der in England und Frankreich zu dieser Zeit gängigen Praxis sowie von anderen Opern Lockes inspirieren lassen. Es schien mir nur natürlich, die Farben des Orchesters je nach dem Charakter der Stücke und ihrer Platzierung in der Handlung zu verstärken, um ihre Stimmung zu unterstreichen. Ich habe auch eine Perkussionsstimme frei hinzugefügt: Da die meisten dieser Stücke von der Volksmusik inspirierte Tänze sind, hätte man eine solche „Mischung“ auch zu Lockes Lebzeiten antreffen können.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) ist der andere englische Barockkomponist, für den ich mich interessiert habe, denn er ist einer der Shakespeare am nächsten kommenden Komponisten des 17. Jahrhunderts, aber zugleich auch einer der musikalisch gesehen zeitlosesten. Man hat lange zu Unrecht geglaubt, dass er die Musik zu Shadwells Semiseria geschrieben hatte, aber das schmälert die Bedeutung des dramatischen Elementes seiner Musik keineswegs, insbesondere bei der von Shakespeares „Sommernachtstraum“ inspirierten „Fairy Queen“. Es scheint klar, dass Purcell „The Tempest“ genau kannte. Ich wollte hier aber den Fokus eher auf Purcells Kirchen- als auf seine Bühnenmusik legen.

Diese entstand hauptsächlich um 1680/1682 herum, wenige Jahre nach Lockes „The Tempest“; meines Erachtens ist sie seine schönste, seine innigste Musik in Bezug auf Kontrapunkt, Reinheit der Linien und Intensität. Sie schien mir den universellen und spirituellen Anteil des Shakespeare-Stückes gut wiederzugeben - eine Art Allegorie auf Prosperos oder Calibans Vision von Gut und Böse. Und die bestürzende Nüchternheit des Hear My Prayer (Hör mein Bitten) hat mich sofort an Prosperos letzten Monolog erinnert, der sozusagen eine Art „Glaubensbekenntnis“ in sich birgt.

Bei einem großen Sprung durch die Zeit bin ich auf den einzigartigen Schweizer Komponisten Frank Martin (1890-1974) gestoßen. Dieser war Pianist, Cembalist und großer Verfechter der Barockmusik, vor allem der Bachs; er hat das A-capella-Chorrepertoire des 20. Jahrhunderts mit zwei Meisterwerken bereichert: nämlich mit der imposanten „Messe für Doppelchor“ (1922) sowie den wunderbaren, Shakespeares „Der Sturm“ entnommenen „Songs of Ariel“ (1950). 1952 vertonte er das Libretto von „The Tempest“ in der Übersetzung von August Wilhelm Schlegel, „Der Sturm“, als komplette Oper.

Er baute seine Chorkompositionen in unveränderter Form in das Werk mit ein; diese Stücke figurieren hier Ariels Interventionen, die von einem Chor aus den Kulissen heraus gesungen werden. Shakespeare selbst hatte sich gewünscht, dass einige Passagen von Ariels Text gesungen werden sollten. Also habe ich beschlossen, diese fünf Stücke in das Programm mit aufzunehmen, die sehr genau in den Ablauf

eingepasst wurden. Wie die Instrumentalwerke Lockes gliedern die „Songs of Ariel“ die Handlung und harmonisieren das Ganze. Beschreibend, faszinierend, bunt und freundlich spiegeln sie perfekt die Leichtigkeit und ungreifbare Präsenz des Luftgeistes.

Der sicherlich sehr von der Vokalmusik Frank Martins inspirierte französische Komponist Philippe Hersant (geb. 1948) zeigt auch eine gewisse Vorliebe für die englische Musik, vor allem die des 16.

Jahrhunderts. Mit dem zutiefst melancholischen, von der Viola da gamba geprägten „Falling Star“ (2005) zollt er den großen englischen Madrigalisten Tribut. John Donne (1572-1631) und Henry King (1592-1669), zwei Shakespeare-Zeitgenossen, Verfasser metaphysischer, ihre allegorische Vision des Todes und des Übernatürlichen evozierender Gedichte, liefern die Textgrundlage für Hersants Komposition. Sein Werk befasst sich mit der Dualität der beiden Gedichte; das eine wird von Frauen, das andere von Männerstimmen gesungen. Die Stimmen vereinen sich dann zu einem leuchtenden Höhepunkt, der sich anschließend abschwächt und zu einem friedlich-beruhigten Ende führt.

Der Charakter der hier auf diesem Album eingespielten Musik ändert sich völlig mit den Werken des 1965 geborenen Thierry Pécou. In „A Circle in the Sand“(2001), der Vertonung einer kurzen Shakespeare-Textpassage mit einer Mischung aus Spott, Lachen, Angst, Schrecken und Wahnsinn, macht der Komponist die Violine und die beiden Chöre zu Soundeffekt-Werkzeugen, mit Schreien oder unbestimmten Tönen aus einem weit entfernten Anderswo und einer ebenso fernen Zeit. Kurze Silben, Vogelstimmen, Pfeifen und „aztekisch“ Klingendes bilden ein irrwitziges klangliches Dekor; es handelt sich um eine regelrechte Tonmalerei zur Hervorhebung des Seltsam-Befremdlichen in Shakespeares Werk.

Das zweite Stück, „Pour un rituel imaginaire“ (Für ein imaginäres Ritual, 1991) überrascht durch seine Besetzung: Das warme und süße Timbre der drei Bassflöten – der Instrumente, die auch Locke für seine

Musikstücke benutzte – stellt unweigerlich eine Verbindung her zu den Holzflöten einiger Indianerstämme.

Der Titel des Werkes sagt eigentlich schon alles; es evoziert einen ganz besonderen Moment des Stückes, einen heiligen Raum, ein gesungenes und getanztes Ritual. Es ist eben diese imaginäre „Masque“ (ein Maskenspiel, das Theater, Musik und Tanz vereinte und im 17. Jahrhundert in England sehr populär war), die Shakespeare im vierten Akt herausarbeitet. Die Flöten nehmen die Gestalt der barocken mythologischen Gottheiten an, das ist Theater im Theater.

UNE COMPAGNIE EN MOUVEMENT La Tempête offre à chacun de ses concerts une « expérience » pour le public, un spectacle vivant qui trouve ses fondements dans l’esprit des oeuvres qu’elle interprète.

La compagnie collabore avec des metteurs en scène, des chorégraphes, des comédiens ou des danseurs. Les musiciens eux-mêmes sont les « outils » d’une démarche sur le mouvement, qu’ils soient simplement spatialisés, mis en scène ou chorégraphiés.

LE CROISEMENT DES RÉPERTOIRES La Tempête défend avec la même passion et la même exigence des œuvres allant du moyen-âge à aujourd’hui, dans des effectifs à géométrie variable et sous des formes sans cesse réinventées.

Le croisement des époques offre ainsi de nouvelles clés d’interprétation, des mises en perspective, dans une réalisation singulière et personnelle des œuvres.

LA TEMPÊTE A COLLECTIVE GROUP OF ARTISTS Following the incentive of Simon-Pierre Bestion, the musicians of La Tempête agreed to form an artistic collective. Whether fifty or seventy, the singular identity of each person is solicited, making him or her an actor in the artistic evolution and strategy of the project.

At the heart of La Tempête’s work is a wealth of timbres and personalities searching to create a warm, radiant, ingrown sound.

AN EVER-CHANGING COMPANY Each of La Tempête’s concerts is an « experience » for the public, a live performance based on the inherent spirt of the work being interpreted.

The company collaborates with stage directors, choreographers, actors and dancers. The musicians are the « tools » in an approach to movement, whether it be simply spatialized, staged or choreographed.

THE CROSSING OF REPERTOIRE La Tempête defends with equal passion and exigency works stretching from the Middle Ages to today, with a variable number of artists and in formations continually reinvented.

The crossing of eras thereby offers new keys to interpretation and new perspectives, creating works that are both singular and deeply personal.

REPERTOIRE-„CROSSOVER“ Das Ensemble La Tempête legt bei seiner passionierten Interpretation der vom mittelalterlichen Repertoire bis hin zur Musik unserer Zeit reichenden Werke, in unterschiedlicher Besetzung und in neuen künstlerischen Formen, stets die gleichen, höchst anspruchsvollen Maßstäbe an.

Dieses „Crossover“ der musikalischen Stile und Epochen bietet somit völlig neue interpretatorische Ansätze und Perspektiven, in einer einzigartigen und sehr persönlichen Umsetzung der Werke.

Sich dieser stets neuen musikalischen Erfahrung auszusetzen, dazu laden wir jeden Zuschauer ein, sei er nun noch wenig mit dem Repertoire vertraut oder höchst erfahrener Musikkenner und -liebhaber!

LA TEMPÊTE EINE MUSIKALISCHE KÜNSTLERGEMEINSCHAFT Auf Betreiben von Simon-Pierre Bestion haben sich die Musiker und die Musikerinnen des Ensembles La Tempête zu einer musikalischen Gemeinschaft mit variabler Besetzung, - von zehn bis hin zu fünfzig Mitgliedern -, zusammengefunden, in der sich jede einzelne Künstlerpersönlichkeit mit ihren Stärken und Kompetenzen einbringen und somit aktiv zur künstlerisch-strategischen Entwicklung des jeweiligen Projektes beitragen kann.

Der kollektive Ansatz der Künstler von La Tempête stellt die Vielfalt der Persönlichkeiten sowie die reichen Klangfarben in den Mittelpunkt der gemeinsamen Arbeit, in dem Bestreben, einen warmen, farbenfrohen und „runden“ Ensembleklang zu erzielen.

ENCHANTER LE MONDE La Fondation Orange contribue depuis plus de 25 ans à la découverte de jeunes talents et à l’émergence de choeurs, orchestres et groupes vocaux. A l’exemple de « La Tempête », jeune ensemble dirigé par Simon-Pierre Bestion et soutenu par la Fondation depuis 2013.

La Fondation Orange accompagne également des festivals, théâtres et opéras qui participent à la création et à la diffusion de la musique auprès de publics qui en sont éloignés. www.fondationorange.com
