Un enchanteur, las du monde et de la vie, d'humeur maussade, dépose ses sortilèges dans un coffret adamantin, soigneusement fermé, jette la clé dans la mer, et meurt.

Les génies s'élèvent dans les airs, puis descendent et s’inclinent devant cette charmante et innocente maîtresse, qui de ses doigts blancs les guide avec aisance.

Beethoven, Sonates opus 109-110-111 Une musique-monde « La musique instrumentale de Beethoven nous ouvre le royaume de l’immense et de l’incommensurable. » E.T.A. Hoffmann

À l’orée du commentaire qu’il consacre en 1810 à la 5e Symphonie de Beethoven, Hoffmann élève un hymne à la musique instrumentale : « Lorsqu’on parle de la musique comme d’un art autonome, ne faudrait-il pas entendre seulement la musique instrumentale ? […] Elle exprime sous une forme pure et exclusive son essence caractéristique. » Même Hegel devra s’incliner devant la « musique indépendante ».

Encore art d’agrément pour Kant, la musique peut ainsi devenir « métaphysique » pour Schopenhauer. Et Gœthe prend acte que l’Allemand a traité la musique instrumentale avec la même élévation que l’Italien le chant. Pour autant les sonates ne détrônent pas l’opéra. Lorsque Hegel se rend à Vienne en 1824, il hante les scènes lyriques, toutes frémissantes des opéras de Rossini, sans même songer à rencontrer Beethoven... En 7

conséquence, dès 1834, le musicographe Kieseweter verra dans ces années essentielles « l’époque de Beethoven et de Rossini ».

On comprend pourquoi Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), natif de Bonn, jugeait la capitale autrichienne trop italianisée et pas assez allemande... C’est dans ce contexte diversifié, postérieur au Congrès de Vienne, qu’il compose ses dernières œuvres. Le musicien est encore âprement discuté mais nul ne songerait à nier qu’avec sa rudesse granitique, son sérieux, sa ténacité, il assume et résume l’évolution décisive en faveur d’une musique instrumentale auto-signifiante. Car dans ses 9 symphonies, 17 quatuors et 32 sonates il a su communiquer l’acte même de la création, de l’imagination. Pour rendre compte de la complexité et de la puissance irrésistible de son art, Hoffmann dans la Leipziger allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, A. B. Marx dans sa Berliner allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, Schumann dans sa Neue Zeitschrift für Musik et tous les exégètes à venir jusqu’à Schœnberg se sont aidés d’exemples musicaux précis. L’analyse musicale serait-elle née de la nécessité de comprendre les ressorts de l’œuvre de Beethoven ?

Beethoven et le piano Déchiffreur, improvisateur et interprète sans rival, Beethoven fascinait ses auditoires. Son contemporain Tomasek le tenait pour un « géant parmi les pianistes ».

Lorsque la surdité l’éloignera des scènes, le clavier restera son compagnon quotidien, 8

son laboratoire. Ou plutôt les claviers. Le pianoforte est un instrument en constante évolution dans son étendue, sa mécanique, sa résistance et Beethoven souhaita toujours des instruments plus perfectionnés. Il a donc apprécié son Érard de 1803 puis son solide Broadwood de 1818 tout en restant fidèle aux mécaniques viennoises plus volubiles des familles Stein et Streicher. Sa dernière production exige un clavier de six octaves et demi (do0 - fa6) et se referme avant la diffusion du mécanisme à double échappement de Sébastien Érard.

Plus que chez Haydn, son maître, plus que Mozart, son modèle, les sources de Beethoven sont à chercher dans le Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen (Essai sur la vraie manière de jouer des instruments à clavier) de C.Ph.E. Bach et dans les sonates de Clementi. Mais plus qu’aucun autre, Beethoven traite l’instrument de façon acoustique. En quête de spatialisation, il couvre tout l’espace sonore, oppose les registres, utilise les trilles vibratoires dans le suraigu, les croisements de mains, d’immenses pédales qui libèrent les harmonies, passe du cantabile le plus legato au martellato le plus percussif en accords alternés et fracassés.

Quoique maître suprême du temps dans son élasticité et sa relativité, mais soucieux d’approcher d’un tempo juste, Beethoven recourt au métronome de son ami Maëlzel. Bien qu’il ait joué Le Clavier bien tempéré de Bach dans son intégralité, il n’en appelle pas au monde des 24 tonalités dans ses 32 sonates. Depuis la Sonate « Das Lebewhol » (Les Adieux) opus 81, il use parfois de notations en langue 9

vernaculaire. Cette « sonate caractéristique », la seule dont le titre soit de l’auteur, offre, selon un critique du temps, « le type musical de tout adieu, de toute absence, de tout retour ». La prétendue absolute Musik serait-elle donc un symbole à déchiffrer ?

Les romantiques estimeront de fait que depuis Beethoven il n’existe plus de musique sans une arrière-pensée ou un programme caché. Les plus grands interprètes compositeurs auront à cœur de diffuser ce monde sonore exceptionnel, parmi lesquels Mendelssohn, Liszt et Clara Wieck-Schumann.

Les sonates pour piano Au nombre de 32, elles constituent une somme inégalable que Hans Bülow nommera « le Nouveau Testament », l’Ancien étant Le Clavier bien tempéré de Bach. De l’opus 2 à l’opus 111, elles se font de plus en plus rares et ambitieuses. Quinze sonates sont en trois mouvements, moule hérité du xviiie siècle ; onze en quatre, moule « symphonique » caractéristique du xixe siècle ; six se contentent de deux, jouant du petit binôme ou, à l’inverse, de l’ambitieuse dialectique thèse et antithèse. Viendront encore les Bagatelles opus 119 et 126 et les Variations Diabelli opus 120. Puis les derniers quatuors à cordes boucleront le parcours du maître, peu après la publication de sa Missa solemnis et de sa 9e Symphonie avec chœurs. Les dernières sonates ont ainsi valeur de testament par leur magnificence, mais elles ne sont point testamentaires.

Conceptions absolument neuves, les cinq dernières sonates (opus 101, 106, 10

109, 110, 111) furent publiées sans idée d’exécution publique. C’est Bülow qui, dans la seconde moitié du siècle, s’imposera de les jouer dans une même soirée pour révéler leur cohérence. Dans toutes ces dernières œuvres, pour lesquelles Beethoven n’envisageait une reconnaissance que dans un futur éloigné, « l’horizon d’attente » est pulvérisé au profit de « l’écart esthétique ». L’organisation formelle inédite semble si personnelle que Marx proposera la notion d’idées-forme (Formideen).

Subjuguée, la poétesse Bettina Brentano aura ces mots : « Il s’avance à grands pas loin en avant de la civilisation humaine. […] Lui seul est libre et produit de plein gré l’incréé et l’inattendu1. » Mais l’art est par essence la victoire de l’ordre sur le chaos, et c’est en architecte du sonore que Beethoven repense les notions d’exposition, péripétie, retour à l’ordre.

Les trois dernières sonates Publiées séparément – à la différence des trilogies opus 2 et 10 –, les sonates opus 109, 110 et 111, des années 1821-1822, forment sans doute un triple organisme spatio-temporel à la fois unifié et complémentaire, telles les trois dernières symphonies de Mozart. En relation de tierce majeure, les trois tonalités fondatrices, en mode majeur, dessinent un cercle parfait, la médiante de chaque sonate devenant la tonique de la sonate suivante : mi/sol# ; lab/do ; do/mi. La perception du nombre des mouvements tend à se brouiller en raison de l’attacca des deux premiers de l’opus 109, de l’enchevêtrement 1. B. des deux derniers de l’opus 110, de l’ampleur des deux de l’opus 111.

Les trois poèmes pianistiques commencent par un mouvement de forme sonate, mais incomparables dans leur dimension, tempo et expression. Très brefs, avec des sections de développement (Durchführung) compressées, certains mouvements sont réduits à quelques gestes musicaux au profit de finales d’une intensité rare, même chez ce maître de la forme téléologique. Plus que jamais organiques, issues de cellules génératrices, les trois sonates recourent à la variation, à la fugue, au trille vibratoire et jouent de subtils rapports métriques.

La Sonate opus 109, en mi majeur, commence par deux mouvements très concis et enchaînés. Le premier fait alterner une gracile arabesque répartie aux deux mains et un éloquent arioso ; le deuxième, un âpre Prestissimo en mi mineur, s’en tient à un seul caractère pour mieux mettre en valeur la diversité contrôlée du finale.

Préfacé par l’indication Gesangvoll, mit innigster Empfindung, dont aucun équivalent italien ne saurait communiquer la ferveur indicible (très chantant avec le sentiment le plus intime), ce finale déroule un art de la variation en six épisodes seulement.

Au terme de la dernière variation, soulevée de trilles cosmiques, le retour du cantique évoque le geste de Bach ramenant pour finir l’aria des Variations Goldberg.

Le Moderato cantabile de la Sonate opus 110, en la bémol, offre un bouleversant exemple de la tendresse que les romantiques entendront à cette couleur tonale. Un 12

rustique Allegro molto à deux temps, incluant deux chansons populaires (Martin Cooper), laisse place à un étreignant Adagio en forme de Recitativo et Arioso dolente (Klagender Gesang). Dans la Fuga, régénératrice, se déploie l’art incomparable, humain autant que musical, du créateur qui fait s’entrelacer la fugue et l’arioso et accompagne leurs métamorphoses d’indications de caractère (en allemand et italien) pour signifier le retour à la vie, donc à la vivacité. Une semblable intention animera le « Chant sacré de reconnaissance d’un convalescent à la divinité » (Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit) du Quatuor opus 132.

Le choix de l’allemand pour certaines indications de caractère disparaît dans la Sonate opus 111, pourtant dédiée à l’archiduc Rodolphe de Habsbourg. À propos des deux amples mouvements tous les exégètes ont évoqué ce monde et l’Autre monde, les principes dionysiaque et apollinien ou encore le cycle samsara et nirvana.

Préfacée par un puissant Maestoso déjà zébré d’harmonies de septièmes diminuées, la sonate-fugue de l’Allegro con brio ed appassionato en do mineur est une lutte profondément humaine et douloureuse mais énergique. Dans le blanc do majeur des origines, l’Arietta a pour mission de conclure la sonate, et peut-être l’ensemble des sonates. Au fil suspendu ou plus scandé de ses cinq variations, elle gagne les sphères de la méditation extatique, transcendantale, éternisée. Sublimité faite sonate.

Or, Bettina Brentano prêtera à Beethoven cette pensée : « La musique est une révélation plus sublime que toute sagesse et toute philosophie. » La notion de sublime 14

induit une tension vers un dépassement infini, tôt débusqué par Hoffmann : « La musique de Beethoven fait jouer les ressorts de la peur, de l’effroi, de l’épouvante, de la douleur, et excite tout justement cette aspiration infinie qui est l’essence du romantisme. » C’est bien ainsi que les Français entendent alors le message de Beethoven.

Pour Hugo : « Ce sourd entendait l’infini » ; pour Balzac : « Il y a dans cet homme une puissance divine. […] Ce que vous jette Beethoven est infini. » De Beethoven et ses œuvres-mondes, certains retiendront davantage le héraut de la musique pure ou de la musique à programme, le dionysiaque porteur de joie ou le souffrant aux pulsions suicidaires, le constructeur ou le destructeur. En tout état de cause, le créateur met un point final à ses sonates pour piano en 1822, l’année de la disparition de Hoffmann. En faisant de Beethoven le porte-parole du romantisme, l’écrivain-musicien a quelque peu faussé la perception de son apport. Toutes les transgressions que charrient l’œuvre prométhéenne de Beethoven ne sauraient masquer sa fidélité aux idéaux de l’Aufklärung, sa volonté classique de déboucher, par-delà les aspérités, sur une résolution, par-delà l’obscurité, sur la lumière.

A great magician, weary of life, and of the world, in sullen mood locked the magic of his soul within an adamantine casket, firmly clasped, tossed the key into the sea and died.

Simple souls strive with all their might, in vain! No tool can pick the obstinate lock.

And so the magic sleeps on, like its master.

A shepherd’s child, playing on the shore, watches their feverish and useless pursuit.

Daydreaming, as young girls will, she dips her white fingers into the water, and grasps, and lifts and holds – the key!

Up she jumps, with heart beating faster.

The casket beams at her as if with eyes.

The key fits. The lid flies open. The spirits ascend, then drop and bow down to this most charming, innocent mistress, whose white fingers guide them effortlessly.

Beethoven, Piano Sonatas op. 109, 110, 111 Music all embracing “Beethoven’s instrumental music opens up to us the realm of the monstrous and immeasurable.”

At the beginning of his 1810 article on Beethoven’s instrumental music, E.T.A.Hoffmann wrote: “When music is spoken of as an independent art, does not the term properly apply only to instrumental music, which scorns all aid, all admixture of other arts (poetry), and gives pure expression to its own peculiar artistic nature?” Even Hegel bowed before what he termed “independent music”, and while for Kant instrumental music was beautiful but ultimately trivial, Schopenhauer saw it as the greatest art, uniquely capable of representing the metaphysical organisation of reality. Goethe noted that Germany had taken instrumental music to the heights, in the same way as Italy had elevated singing. Nevertheless sonatas did not dethrone opera. When Hegel stayed in Vienna in 1824, he spent his evenings at the opera house, where he discovered the works of Rossini, but he made no attempt to meet Beethoven. Consequently, the musicologist R.G.Kieseweter, in one of the first music history surveys, characterised 17

the years 1800-32 as “The Epoch of Beethoven and Rossini”.

Understandably, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), born in Bonn, felt that the Austrian capital was influenced too much by Italy, and was not sufficiently German.

But it was in that diversified context following the Congress of Vienna that he composed his last works. Although his music was still the subject of fierce debate, no one would have thought of denying the important part he played in the decisive move towards instrumental music that was self-sufficient, meaningful in its own right. For in his 9 symphonies, 17 string quartets and 32 piano sonatas ​​he succeeded in communicating the very act of creation, of imagination. In accounting for the complexity and irresistible power of Beethoven’s music, E.T.A. Hoffmann in the Leipziger allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, A.B. Marx in his Berliner allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, Schumann in his Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, and all the commentators that followed, up to and including Schoenberg, gave specific music examples. Was musical analysis born of the need to understand how Beethoven’s music works?

Beethoven and the piano In a class of his own when it came to sight-reading, improvising and performing, Beethoven captivated audiences. For his contemporary, the Czech composer and pianist V.J. Tomásek, he was “the giant among pianists”. When deafness forced him to give up playing in public, the keyboard was to remain his daily companion, his “laboratory” – 18

but we should really say keyboards, in the plural, for the piano was constantly evolving at that time – broader compass, better action, greater resistance – and Beethoven wanted instruments that were more and more sophisticated. So he appreciated the Érard he received in 1803 and his sturdy Broadwood of 1818, while remaining faithful to the more voluble instruments made in Vienna by the Stein and Streicher families.

His last piano works, written before Sébastien Érard developed the double escapement action, require a compass of six-and-a-half octaves (CC–f’’’’).

More than in Haydn, his teacher, or in Mozart, his model, Beethoven’s sources are to be found in C.P.E. Bach’s keyboard treatise, Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen, and in the piano sonatas of Clementi. But more than any other composer Beethoven treated the instrument acoustically. Aiming for spatialisation, he covered the whole of the sound space, made use of contrasting registers, very high trills, ascending unto heavenly spheres, and hand-crossing, huge pedals to release the harmonies; he moved from the most legato of cantabile passages to the most percussive martellato, with an alternation of emphatic chords.

Beethoven was a supreme master of the elasticity and relativity of time; but anxious to keep a steady tempo, he nevertheless used the metronome invented by his friend Maelzel. Although he had played all the pieces of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, he did not likewise make use of all 24 keys in his 32 sonatas. From his Sonata no.26, op.81a, “Lebewohl”, onwards he sometimes used German, rather than Italian, 20

in his scores. This “Sonate caractéristique”, the only one of the sonatas that received a title from Beethoven himself, was described by a critic of the time as “epitomising in its music all farewells, all absences, all returns”. Would so-called “absolute Musik” therefore be a symbol needing to be deciphered? According to the Romantics, after Beethoven there was no music that did not have an ulterior motive or some hidden programme. This exceptional world of sound was eagerly made known by the greatest pianist-composers, including Mendelssohn, Liszt and Clara Wieck (later Schumann).

The piano sonatas Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas represent a unique achievement. Hans von Bülow called them “The New Testament” of music (Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier being “The Old Testament”). From op.2 to op.111 they grew in complexity and depth as the cycle progressed. Fifteen of them are still in the eighteenth-century 3-movement mould, eleven are in the 4-movement “symphonic” mould typical of the nineteenth century, while the remaining six have just two movements, either complementary or more ambitiously representing the thesis-antithesis dialectic. They were followed by the Bagatelles op.119 and 126, the Diabelli Variations op.120, then, shortly after the publication of the Missa Solemnis op.123 and the “Choral” Symphony, no.9, op.125, the late string quartets, his final compositions. Thus, without actually being his last compositions, Beethoven’s late piano sonatas have the magnificence of testamentary works.

Perfectly novel in their conception, the last five sonatas, opp. 101, 106, 109, 110 and 111, were published without the idea of ​​public performance. Hans von Bülow, who in the second half of the nineteenth century was the first to perform the complete cycle of 32, brought out the coherence of these five sonatas by playing them together in a single evening. In all of these late works, which he knew would be fully appreciated only in a distant future, Beethoven prefers to lead off-track, aesthetically speaking, rather than fulfil the normal expectations of the listener. Their original formal structure seems so personal that Adolf Bernhard Marx, composer, theorist and critic, used the term “Formideen” to refer to their unique formal organisation, in which it is the idea that creates the form. Captivated, the poetess Bettina Brentano von Arnim wrote (in Goethes Briefwechsel mit einem Kinde, 1835): “He strides far ahead of the culture of mankind. [...] He alone begets independently in himself the unsuspected, uncreated.” But art is essentially the victory of order over chaos, and Beethoven the architect rethought the three-part view of structure (with a beginning, middle, and end, or, to use the terms of Classical drama, the protasis, epitasis and catastrophe – i.e. exposition, main action building towards a climax, and dénouement).

The last three sonatas Published separately (unlike op.2 and 10, which are sets of three), op.109, 110 and 111, composed in Vienna in the years 1821-1822, form a trilogy, like Mozart’s last three symphonies. Separated from each other by a major third, the three main keys, 22

in major mode, describe a perfect circle, with the mediant of each sonata becoming the tonic of the next: E/G sharp; A flat/C; C/E. Our perception of the number of movements is blurred by the fact that the first two of op.109 are played without a pause, the last two of op.110 are interwoven, and by the sheer scale of the two movements of op.111.

Each of these three poetic piano compositions begins with a movement in sonata form, but in scale, tempo and expression the movements differ greatly. Very short, with compressed development sections, some movements are reduced to just a few musical gestures, while the finales are of rare intensity, even for Beethoven. More than ever organic, derived from generating cells, the three sonatas make use of variation, fugue, very high trills and a play on subtle metric relationships.

Sonata no. 30 in E major, op. 109, begins with two very short movements, linked together. The first one alternates a graceful arabesque in both hands with an eloquent arioso; the second one, a stark Prestissimo in E minor, retains the same dark, stormy character throughout, thus setting in greater relief the much longer finale, with its well-controlled diversity. Bearing the indication Gesangvoll, mit innigster Empfindung (perhaps best translated as “with the most-tender feeling�), this last movement is a set of variations, its main theme marked Andante molto cantabile ed espressivo. At the end of the sixth and last variation, with its long-drawn-out trills, the return to the main theme is reminiscent of Bach’s return to the aria at the end of the Goldberg Variations.

The first movement, Moderato cantabile, of Sonata no.31 in A flat major, op.110, is a very moving example of the tenderness the Romantics were to hear in this tone colour. The rustic second movement, Allegro molto, in duple time, includes according to Martin Cooper (Beethoven, The Last Decade 1817-1827, 1970) quotations from two folk songs, Unsa kätz häd kaz’ln g’habt and Ich bin lüderlich, du bist lüderlich.

It gives way to the final Adagio, with first a “recitative” and then an arioso dolente – a “plaintive song”, coming from the bottom of the heart. In the following Fuga Beethoven intertwines the fugue and the arioso, marked “ermattet” (exhausted), accompanying their transformations with character indications (in German and Italian) signifying a return to life and therefore vivacity. A similar intention is found in the “Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit” (A Convalescent’s Holy Song of Thanksgiving to the Divinity) in his String Quartet no.15, op.132.

The choice of German for certain character indications disappears in Sonata no.32 in C Minor, Op.111, dedicated to Archduke Rudolph of Habsburg. Some see this work as a depiction of the strife and terror of this world, giving way to the peace and spirituality of the hereafter. Introduced by a strong and grim Maestoso abounding in and beginning with diminished seventh chords, the sonata-fugue of the C-minor Allegro con brio ed appassionato represents a deeply human, painful and impassioned struggle.

The sonata’s second movement, the C major Arietta, consisting of five variations on a sixteen-bar theme, with a brief modulating interlude and a final coda, expresses an experience that touches on the mystical. A truly sublime sonata!

Bettina Brentano reported to Goethe (op.cit.) Beethoven’s claim that “music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy”. And according to E.T.A. Hoffmann, “Beethoven’s music wields the lever of fear, awe, horror, and pain, and it awakens that eternal longing that is the essence of the Romantic”. For Victor Hugo: “This deaf man heard the infinite”. And for Balzac: “There is in this man a divine power. [...] What Beethoven writes is infinite.”

Some were to see Beethoven, with his all-embracing works, as the herald of absolute music or of programme music, as the Dionysian bearer of joy or as a depressed man with suicidal impulses, as the constructor or the destructor. In any event, he finished his final piano sonata in 1822, the year Hoffmann died. In making Beethoven the spokesman of Romanticism, that writer and musician somewhat skewed our perception of his contribution. All the transgressions with which his Promethean œuvre is laden could not hide Beethoven’s fidelity to the ideals of the Enlightenment, his Classical desire for calm beyond the storm, light beyond the darkness.
