Beethovens 32 Klaviersonaten umfassen sein gesamtes schöpferisches Leben als Komponist. Sie bilden Beethovens Entwicklung von seiner frühesten Sonate op. 2 Nr. 1 von 1795 bis zur letzten, 1822 vollendeten Sonate op. 111 ab.

Herkömmlicherweise wird Beethovens Leben und Werk in drei Perioden eingeteilt – früh, mittel und spät. Solche Kategorien schließen unvermeidlich so viel aus wie sie erschließen, aber sie können helfen, repräsentative Werke hervorzuheben und, wenn man die neue live-Aufnahme sämtlicher Klaviersonaten von Konstantin Lifschitz hört – im September 2017 in acht Konzerten im großen Konzertsaal der Universität von Hongkong aufgeführt –, einen Bezugsrahmen bereitzustellen. Die Sonaten wurden der Reihe nach vorgetragen, von Nr. 1 bis 32, und nehmen das Publikum so auf eine Reise von jugendlichem Ungestüm zu zeitloser Weisheit mit. Die drei Perioden bieten hierfür eine einfache Orientierungshilfe, die wahrscheinlich überflüssig wird, wenn wir erst einmal mit dem komplexen und oft überraschenden Verlauf dieser Sonaten vertrauter sind. Ohnehin waren sie nie als zusammenhängende Gruppe oder Erzählung gemeint.

Auf der ersten Stufe experimentiert Beethoven offensichtlich mit Einfällen, die sowohl technisch frappierend als auch dramatisch draufgängerisch sind, um in Wien ein entschiedenes Zeichen als Komponist zu setzen. Diese Periode war immer noch eine Lehrzeit; oder, mit den Worten des Grafen Waldstein in einem Albumeintrag zur Erinnerung an Beethovens Reise 1792 von Bonn nach Wien, eine Zeit, um „Mozarts Geist aus Haydns Händen zu empfangen“. Obwohl Beethoven bei seinen vereinzelten Kontrapunkt-Lektionen mit Haydn in Wien an dessen Fähigkeiten wenig Gefallen fand, machte er sich doch zwei Aspekte von Haydns Komponieren zueigen, die entscheidend für seinen eigenen Fortschritt waren. Erstens übernahm er die Technik der motivischen Entwicklung, in der winzige Elemente in einem fortwährenden Prozeß des „Werdens“ gehalten werden, in dem sie sich wandeln und mit anderen Materialien zusammengehen. Zum Beispiel zerlegt Beethoven in der ersten Sonate in f-Moll, die er Haydn widmete, das Eröffnungsthema in kleinste Bausteine von 19

Läufen, Wendungen und Arpeggien und verwendet es so, um den Satz damit zu strukturieren. Zur Zeit der Sturm-Sonate op. 31 Nr. 2 von 1802 sind die motivischen Bausteine im Eröffnungssatz derartig im Fluß, dass sie ineinander überzugehen und die Musik wie ein organisches Gebilde aus sich selbst hervorzubringen scheinen. Zweitens erlernte Beethoven von Haydn nicht nur die kunstvolle Anlage; was Beethovens Behandlung des motivischen Materials auszeichnet, ist eine gewitzte Intelligenz, die mit dem Schein von Kunst spielt, indem sie Erwartungen der Hörer täuscht und die Musik als ihrer selbst bewußt konstruiertes Objekt offenbart. Das Ergebnis ist eine einem trockenen, wissenden Lächeln verwandte Gewitztheit, die oft als „romantische Ironie“ bezeichnet wird und sogar über seinen ernsthaftesten Werken schwebt. Im Anfangssatz der Klaviersonate op.

10 Nr. 2 etwa spaltet er die formelhafte Kadenz am Ende des ersten Abschnitts (der Exposition) ab, arbeitet dieses Klischee eines Abschlusses bis zur Selbstwidersprüchlichkeit um zu dem einer endlos wirkenden Durchführung, nur um diesen Abschnitt mit einem scheinbaren Schluß zu beschließen – einer Rückkehr des Anfangsthemas in der falschen Tonart. Solche ausgefeilten InsiderWitze bezeugen eine ironische Grundveranlagung, die Beethovens Bedürfnis nach unaufhörlichem Experimentieren antreibt. Die Originalität, die er beispielsweise mit der traumartigen Beschaffenheit des Anfangs der Mondschein-Sonate beweist oder mit dem Einsatz einer ungewohnten Tonart für das kontrastierende Thema im ersten Satz der Sonate op. 31 Nr. 1, setzte sich sein Leben lang fort.

Die mittlere Periode wird oft als „heroische“ beschrieben. Das bezieht sich natürlich auf die Eroica-Symphonie von 1803, die von Napoleons Feldzug durch Europa inspiriert war. Aber die heroische Periode ist mehr als bloß ein Gegenstand: sie ist eine musikalische Kraft, eine ästhetische Revolution. Die Waldstein-Sonate und die Appassionata zum Beispiel fangen das Heldenhafte eines Revolutionszeitalters ein, indem sie mit motivischen und formalen Techniken Sonaten von epischen Ausmaßen erzeugen, die wie durch reine Willenskraft unentrinnbar in ihre finalen Kadenzen drängen. Die Musik ist überaus meisterhaft, nicht nur das motivische Material, sondern auch die harmonischen Kräfte, die den Zeitfluß bestimmen. Jede thematische und harmonische Wirkung scheint, bewußt mit unerbittlicher Logik ausgearbeitet, das psychologische Drama eines Helden widerzuspiegeln, der sich durch Gefahren voranmüht, um schließlich in seinem eigenen glorreichen Augenblick Geschichte zu schreiben. Diese Werke sind Werke über die Überwindung rhythmischer 20

und tonaler Dissonanzen. Sie enden alle siegreich; ihre Kämpfe sind in weitreichenden Bögen entworfen und erreichen bezwingende Schlüsse. Für viele Kommentatoren scheinen solche Werke in der Musik das möglich zu machen, was die Französische Revolution in der Wirklichkeit nicht schaffte. Aber für Beethoven mag das Heroische auch etwas Persönlicheres symbolisiert haben, insofern der prometheische Kampf dieser heroischen Werke ineins fällt mit seinem eigenen gegen die Taubheit und seiner Entschiedenheit, in seiner Kunst die tragischen Umstände zu überwinden und „dem Schicksal in den Rachen zu greifen“.

Die Jahre 1812 bis 1817 waren für den Komponisten fruchtlose Jahre. Es war eine Periode des politischen und ästhetischen Wandels; die revolutionären Ideale hatten sich erschöpft und wurden schließlich vom Wiener Kongreß (1815) erstickt, ein Ereignis, das das Ende von Napoleon bedeutete, die Rückkehr der kaiserlichen Herrschaft und den Beginn eines mehr auf Ehrbarkeit achtenden, unheroischeren, etwas mondäneren Geschmacks in Österreich. Ironischerweise ist es diese Periode, in der Beethoven den Höhepunkt seiner Popularität erfuhr, mit so banalen und bombastischen Kompositionen wie Wellingtons Sieg, einem Werk, das die Niederlage des Helden feiert, den er zehn Jahre früher in der Eroica unsterblich gemacht hatte. Dass Stück ist nahezu eine Parodie des heroischen Stils, und bezeichnet als solches das Ende der heroischen Periode.

Beethovens später Stil erhebt sich über diese unergiebigen Jahren als etwas ganz Anderes als die Publikumsrenner, die er zur Zeit des Wiener Kongresses komponierte. In der späten Periode nehmen Beethovens Werke eine rätselhaft weissagende Aura an: sie befördern universale Botschaften an die Menschheit, dehnen bisweilen die Grenzen der Verständlichkeit aus und fordern eine zuvor nicht dagewesene kritische Aufmerksamkeit. Diese Werke sind sowohl öffentliche Verkündigungen (wie in den gigantischen Dimensionen der Hammerklavier-Sonate) als auch private Äußerungen (wie in der vorletzten Sonate, op. 110, die eine Art emotionalen Zusammenbruch erleidet).

Obwohl es nur fünf späte Klaviersonaten gibt, sind sie doch entscheidend für die Formung des neuen Stils. Die Hammerklavier-Sonate von 1818 markiert die Wiederauferstehung von Beethovens schöpferischer Energie, aber einer, die gewalttätiger ist als die früherer Stile, wie paradigmatisch das zerklüftete Fugenfinale; aber es ist auch ein Stil, der lyrischer ist als zuvor, wie beispielhaft 21

die monumentale Ruhe des langsamen Satzes, der sogar noch in seiner Dunkelheit einen Abglanz spiritueller Transzendenz bewahrt. Solche Verschiedenartigkeit zeigt an, dass der späte Stil nicht wirklich ein Stil ist, sondern eine Infragestellung der heroischen Musik der mittleren Jahre, die deren vereinheitlichte und zielgerichtete Strukturen aufbricht zugunsten einer Heterogenität von Stilen. Motive tendieren dazu, als abstrakte Muster unter einer viel beliebiger zurückbleibenden Oberfläche zu verschwinden, die zu schroffen Entgegensetzungen neigt. Die E-Dur-Sonate op. 109 beginnt mit einem Gemenge von dissoziierenden Fragmenten, die einander in Tempo, Textur und Charakter widersprechen und doch untereinander von höchst abstrakten thematischen Verbindungen zusammengehalten werden. Die Technik der motivischen Entwicklung geht einher mit einem erneuerten Interesse für Kontrapunkt (wie beispielsweise in den Fugen von op. 101, 106 und 110) und Variationsformen, in denen die Themen eher erforscht als geschmückt werden (wie beispielhaft in den Finalsätzen von op. 109 und 111). Desweiteren sind diese Werke späte nicht so sehr hinsichtlich ihrer Entstehungszeit als vielmehr in ihrer Gestimmtheit. Sie beginnen ein historisches Bewusstsein zu zeigen, wenn Beethoven Musik einander gegenüberstellt, die auf verschiedene historische Perioden anspielt; er zitiert sogar seine letzte Sonate op. 111 in den abschließenden Momenten der Diabelli-Variationen. Doch in all diesen Fällen wird Geschichte nicht länger als zielgerichtete Bewegung ausgedrückt, sondern ist in Fragmente zerbrochen, die die Gegenwart in die zeitlosen und nostaligischen Eigenschaften einer romantischen Ruine zu transzendieren scheinen. Im allerletzten Satz seiner allerletzten Sonate, in der das Thema in einen Lichtschein von Trillern und Skalen verwandelt ist, nehmen die Bildersturm-Trümmer die Ausstrahlung einer verlöschenden religiösen Ikone an. Wie in vielen der späten Werke erscheint die Musik außerhalb der Zeit – in jedem Sinne.

Wie weit erscheint von diesem herausgehobenen Standpunkt in der Rückschau die erste Sonate entfernt! Beethovens Reise ist eine lange und anstrengende Erforschung nicht nur in technischer Hinsicht, sondern auch von letzten menschlichen Fragen. Dies mag erklären, warum Beethoven sich selbst nicht Komponist nannte, sondern „Tondichter“. Wenn die Sonaten Beethovens schöpferisches Leben nachzeichnen, dann „verdichten“ sie eine Zeit des Aufruhrs und ein Leben voller Kampf, wo die ernsthaftesten Fragen so gewitzt und weise gestellt werden können, dass es uns heute noch herausfordert.

KONSTANTIN LIFSCHITZ 1976 im heute ukrainischen Charkiw geboren, erhielt Konstantin Lifschitz bereits im Alter von 5 Jahren Klavierunterricht bei Tatjana Zelikman an der Gnessin-Schule in Moskau. Danach führten ihn Studien in Russland, England und Italien zu Alfred Brendel, Leon Fleisher, Teodor Gutman, Hamish Milne, Fou Ts’ong, Rosalyn Tureck und Charles Rosen.

Mit seiner aufsehenerregenden ersten Aufnahme der Goldberg-Variationen – Nominierung für den Grammy – , die er im Alter von 17 Jahren einspielte, reihte sich Konstantin Lifschitz in die Riege der maßgeblichen Pianisten der Gegenwart ein. Seit seinem Debüt in Moskau spielt er mit namhaften Orchestern der Welt, wie u.a. dem New York Philharmonic Orchestra, dem Chicago Symphony Orchestra, dem London Symphony Orchestra, den St. Petersburger Philharmonikern, dem RSO Berlin, der Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, dem RAI Orchester Turin oder dem Dänischen Radiosinfonieorchester unter Dirigenten wie Mstislaw Rostropovich, Marek Janowski, Juri Temirkanow, Bernard Haitink, Alexander Rudin und Christopher Hogwood. Solorecitals führen ihn in die wichtigsten Musikmetropolen der Welt wie Paris, Amsterdam, Wien, München oder Mailand. Als leidenschaftlicher Kammermusiker spielte und spielt Konstantin Lifschitz u.a. mit Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Gidon Kremer, Carolin Widmann, Sol Gabetta, Vadim Repin, Alexander Knjasew, Mstislaw Rostropowitsch, Daishin Kashimoto oder Leila Josefowicz.

BEETHOVEN 32 SONATAS

Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas span the composer’s creative life. They track Beethoven’s development from his earliest sonata Op. 2 No. 1 of 1795 to the last sonata Op. 111 completed in 1822.

Traditionally, Beethoven’s life and works have been partitioned into three periods – early, middle and late. Such categories necessarily exclude as much as they include, but they can also highlight representative works and provide a basic framework when listening to this new recording of the complete piano sonatas by Konstantin Lifschitz, performed live at the Grand Hall over 8 concerts at the University of Hong Kong in September 2017. The sonatas were performed in order, from 1 to 32, taking the audience on a journey from youthful vigour to timeless wisdom. The three periods provide a simple map which should probably be discarded once we become more familiar with the complex and often surprising route of these sonatas. After all, they were never meant to be a coherent set or narrative.

In the first stage, Beethoven is clearly experimenting with ideas that are both technically dazzling and dramatically bold in order to make a distinctive mark as a composer in Vienna. This period was still one of apprenticeship; or, in the words of Count Waldstein in an album to commemorate Beethoven’s journey in 1792 from Bonn to Vienna, a time to ‘receive from the hands of Haydn the spirit of Mozart’. Although Beethoven had misgivings about his sporadic counterpoint lessons with Haydn in Vienna, he absorbed from his teacher two aspects of composition that were critical to his progress. First, he adopted the technique of motivic development, where tiny elements are constantly in a state of ‘becoming’ as they change and combine with other materials.

For example, in his first sonata Op. 2, No.1 in F minor, which Beethoven dedicated to Haydn, the opening theme is atomized into small building blocks of scales, turns and arpeggios and 25

deployed to structure the movement. By the time of the Tempest Sonata, Op. 31 No. 2, of 1802, these motivic blocks are in such a flux in the opening movement that formal sections seem to merge into each other, seemingly generating the music from within like an organic structure.

Secondly, Beethoven not only learned from Haydn an artistic disposition; what characterizes Beethoven’s manipulation of the motivic material is a wit that plays with the illusion of art, by thwarting the listener’s expectations to reveal the music as a self-consciously constructed object.

The result is a wit that is akin to a wry and knowing smile, often termed romantic irony, that hovers over even his most serious works. In the opening movement of the piano sonata Op. 10 No. 2, for example, he detaches the formulaic cadence at the end of first section (the exposition), then manipulates this cliché of closure to contradict itself as one of open-ended development, only to conclude the section with an illusion of closure – a return to the opening theme in the wrong key. These elaborate ‘in-jokes’ testify to an ironic disposition that drives Beethoven’s appetite for endless experimentation. The originality he displays, for example, in the dream-like texture that opens the Moonlight Sonata, or the employment of an unusual key for the contrasting theme in the first movement of the piano sonata Op. 31 No. 1, was to continue throughout his life.

The middle period is often described as the ‘heroic’ period. It is defined, of course, by the Eroica (Heroic) Symphony of 1803 inspired by Napoleon’s campaign across Europe. But the Heroic period is more than just a theme: it is a musical force, an aesthetic revolution. The Waldstein Sonata and the Appassionata Sonata, for example, capture the heroism of a revolutionary age by applying motivic and formal techniques to forge sonatas of epic proportions that drive ineluctably to their final cadences as if by the sheer force of the will. The music is about mastery, not only of the motivic material but of the harmonic forces that control the flow of time. Every thematic and harmonic implication seems to be consciously worked out with an inexorable logic that mirrors the psychological drama of a hero who presses ahead through danger to seize history as his moment of glory. These works are about overcoming rhythmic and tonal dissonances. They all end victoriously; their struggles are mapped out over vast trajectories to reach decisive conclusions.

For many commentators, such works seem to make possible in music what the French Revolution failed to procure in reality. But for Beethoven, the heroism may also have symbolized something 26

more personal, for the Promethean struggle that characterizes such heroic works coincides with his own struggle against deafness and his determination in his art to overcome his tragic circumstances and ‘seize fate by the throat’.

The years 1812 to 1817 were fallow years for the composer. It was a period of political and aesthetic change; the revolutionary ideals had exhausted themselves and were finally muffled by the Congress of Vienna (1815), an event that marked the end of Napoleon, the return of imperial rule, and beginning of a more honest, less heroic and somewhat mundane taste in Austria. It is ironic that it is in this period that Beethoven experienced the height of his popularity, with compositions as banal and bombastic as Wellington’s Victory, a work that celebrates the defeat of the hero he had immortalized ten years earlier in the Eroica. The piece is almost a parody of the heroic style, and as such signals the end of the heroic period.

Beethoven’s late style emerges out of these fallow years as something quite different from the crowd pleasers he composed for the Congress of Vienna. In the late period, Beethoven’s works take on an oracular aura: they convey universal messages to humankind, at times pushing the bounds of comprehensibility and demanding a critical attention previously uncalled for. These works are both public declarations (as in the gigantic size of the Hammerklavier sonata), and private utterances (as in the penultimate sonata, Op. 110, that suffers some kind of emotional breakdown).

Although there are only five late piano sonatas, they are critical for shaping the new style. The Hammerklavier Sonata of 1818 marks the resurgence of Beethoven’s creative energy, but one that is more violent than his earlier styles, as epitomized in the abrasive fugal finale; but it is also a style that is more lyrical than before, as exemplified by the monumental stillness of the slow movement that, even in its darkness, glistens with a sense of spiritual transcendence.

Such diversity indicates that the late style is not really a style but a questioning of the heroic music of his middle years, breaking up their integrated and goal-directed structures for a diversity of styles. Motives tend to go underground as abstract patterns, leaving a far more 27

contingent surface that is prone to violent juxtapositions. The E major sonata, Op. 109, opens with a mêlée of dissociated fragments that contradict each other in tempo, texture and character, and yet the materials are held together by the most abstract of thematic links. The technique of motivic development is further side-lined by a renewed interest in counterpoint (exemplified in the fugues of Op. 101 and 106 and 110) and variation forms where themes are probed rather than decorated (exemplified in the finales of Op. 109 and 111). Moreover, these works are not merely late in time, but in mood. They begin to show a historical awareness, with Beethoven juxtaposing music that alludes to different eras; he even quotes his last piano sonata, Op.111, in the closing moments of the Diabelli Variations. But in all these cases, history is no longer expressed as a goal-directed movement but is broken up into fragments that seem to transcend the present into the timeless and nostalgic qualities of a romantic ruin. In the very last movement of his very last sonata, where the theme is transformed into a halo of trills and scales, the iconoclastic debris takes on the aura of a faded religious icon. As with many of the late works, the music seems out of time – in every sense. Looking back from this vantage point, the first sonata seems so distant. Beethoven’s journey has been a long and arduous exploration not only of technique but of ultimate human questions. This may explain why Beethoven did not call himself a composer but a ‘tone poet’. If the sonatas track Beethoven’s creative life, then they ‘poeticize’ a time of upheaval and life of struggle, where the most serious questions can be asked with a wit and wisdom that still challenge us today.

KONSTANTIN LIFSCHITZ Born in 1976 in Kharkiv in Ukraine (then part of the USSR), Konstantin Lifschitz was taking piano lessons with Tatyana Zelikman at the Gnessin School in Moscow when he was five years old. His studies subsequently took him to Russia, England and Italy, where he learnt from Alfred Brendel, Leon Fleisher, Teodor Gutman, Hamish Milne, Fou Ts’ong, Rosalyn Tureck and Charles Rosen.

With his attention-grabbing first recording of the Goldberg Variations – nominated for a Grammy – made when he was 17, Konstantin Lifschitz established his place in the ranks of today’s benchmark pianists. Since his Moscow debut he has played with the world’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Berlin RSO, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Orchestra RAI Turin and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra under such conductors as Mstislav Rostropovich, Marek Janowski, Yuri Temirkanov, Bernard Haitink, Alexander Rudin and Christopher Hogwood.

Solo recitals have taken him to the world’s great musical hubs such as Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, Munich and Milan. Passionate about chamber music, Konstantin Lifschitz has played together with Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Gidon Kremer, Carolin Widmann, Sol Gabetta, Vadim Repin, Alexander Knyazev, Mstislav Rostropovich, Daishin Kashimoto, Leila Josefowicz and more.

Konstantin Lifschitz has documented his enormous breadth of repertoire, spanning the history of keyboard music from the Renaissance to the present day, on a wealth of CD recordings, many of which have won awards. His cyclical performance of all Johann Sebastian Bach’s keyboard works at the Rheingau Music Festival, culminating in his live recording of the Goldberg Variations, was followed in 2017 by all the Beethoven-Sonatas in the space of eight days in Taichung, Hongkong and Taipei – a cycle that he will perform many more times in the course of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year.

BEETHOVEN 32 SONATES PAR DANIEL K.L. CHUA

Les trente-deux sonates pour piano de Beethoven s’étendent sur l’ensemble de la vie créatrice du compositeur. Depuis sa première sonate, opus 2 n° 1, de 1795 jusqu’à la dernière sonate, opus 111, achevée en 1822, elles suivent toute l’évolution artistique de Beethoven.

On divise traditionnellement la vie et l’œuvre de Beethoven en trois périodes – première période, période médiane et période tardive. Les catégories de ce genre excluent nécessairement autant qu’elles incluent, mais elles ont le mérite de mettre en évidence des œuvres représentatives.

Elles nous fourniront un cadre de référence pour écouter ce nouvel enregistrement de l’intégrale des sonates pour piano par Konstantin Lifschitz, réalisé lors de huit concerts donnés dans le Grand Hall de l’Université de Hong Kong en septembre 2017. Lifschitz avait exécuté les sonates dans l’ordre de leur numérotation, de un à trente-deux, entraînant le public dans un voyage allant de la vigueur juvénile à la sagesse intemporelle. Les trois périodes constituent une simple carte que l’on pourra rejeter une fois que l’on se sera familiarisé avec le parcours complexe et souvent surprenant de ces sonates. Après tout, celles-ci n’ont jamais été conçues pour former une totalité cohérente ou narrative. À l’évidence, pendant sa première période, Beethoven expérimente avec des idées à la fois éblouissantes sur le plan technique et audacieuses sur le plan dramatique, afin de s’imposer à Vienne comme un compositeur original. Cette phase était encore pour lui une période d’apprentissage pendant laquelle il allait « recevoir l’esprit de Mozart des mains de Haydn », pour reprendre les mots qu’écrivit le comte Waldstein dans un album commémorant le voyage de Beethoven de Bonn à Vienne en 1792. Bien que les leçons sporadiques de contrepoint qu’il prit auprès de Haydn à Vienne l’aient laissé plutôt sceptique, Beethoven en tira deux aspects de composition qui allaient se révéler cruciaux pour sa propre évolution. En premier lieu, il adopta 31

une technique de développement thématique dans laquelle de petits éléments sont constamment « en devenir », se modifiant et se combinant avec d’autres matériaux. Par exemple, dans sa première sonate, en fa mineur, que Beethoven dédia à Haydn, le thème liminaire est fragmenté en petits segments de gammes, en arabesques et en arpèges, et déployé pour structurer le mouvement. En 1802, dans le premier mouvement de sa sonate « La Tempête », opus 31 n° 2, ces blocs thématiques sont dans un tel changement permanent que les sections formelles semblent se fondre les unes dans les autres, paraissant engendrer la musique depuis l’intérieur, comme une structure organique. Deuxièmement, Beethoven n’a pas seulement appris de Haydn une technique de structuration artistique : l’art avec lequel il manipule le matériau thématique est marqué par un jeu avec l’illusion artistique, contrariant les attentes de l’auditeur afin de révéler que la musique est un objet construit de manière consciente. Il en résulte un esprit qui s’apparente à un sourire ironique et entendu, souvent qualifié d’ironie romantique, et qui plane même sur ses œuvres les plus sérieuses. Dans le premier mouvement de la sonate pour piano opus 10 n° 2, par exemple, Beethoven détache la cadence stéréotypée à la fin de la première section (l’exposition), puis manipule ce cliché de conclusion de façon à ce qu’il se contredise luimême en devenant un cliché de fin ouverte du développement, mais seulement afin de conclure cette section par une illusion de clôture – un retour au thème initial dans la mauvaise tonalité.

Ces « plaisanteries pour initiés » très élaborées témoignent d’un état d’esprit ironique qui anime le désir beethovénien d’expérimentation infinie. Beethoven manifestera toute sa vie l’originalité dont il fait preuve, par exemple, dans la texture onirique qui ouvre la « Sonate au clair de lune » ou dans l’emploi d’une tonalité inhabituelle pour le thème contrastant du premier mouvement de la sonate pour piano opus 31 n° 1.

La période médiane est souvent qualifiée de période « héroïque », en raison, bien sûr, de la symphonie dite « Eroica » (héroïque) de 1803, inspirée par les campagnes militaires de Napoléon en Europe. Mais le caractère héroïque est plus qu’un simple thème : c’est une force musicale, une révolution esthétique. Les sonates dites « Waldstein » et « Appassionata », par exemple, expriment l’héroïsme d’une ère révolutionnaire par l’application des techniques thématiques 32

et formelles : il en résulte des sonates de proportions épiques qui se dirigent inéluctablement vers leurs cadences finales comme si c’était par la pure force de la volonté. La musique tente de maîtriser non seulement le matériau thématique mais aussi les forces harmoniques qui contrôlent le flux du temps. Chaque implication thématique et harmonique semble avoir été consciemment élaborée suivant une logique inexorable qui reflète le drame psychologique d’un héros qui s’efforce, à travers les dangers, de s’emparer de l’histoire à sa propre gloire. Ces œuvres cherchent à surmonter les dissonances rythmiques et tonales. Elles s’achèvent toutes par une victoire ; leurs luttes sont structurées sur d’amples trajectoires afin d’atteindre à des conclusions décisives. Pour de nombreux commentateurs, de telles œuvres paraissent rendre possible en musique ce que la Révolution française avait échoué à produire dans la réalité. Mais pour Beethoven, l’héroïsme peut également avoir symbolisé quelque chose de plus personnel, car la lutte prométhéenne qui caractérise ces œuvres héroïques coïncide avec sa propre lutte contre la surdité et avec sa détermination à surmonter dans son art ces circonstances tragiques et à « saisir le destin à la gorge ».

Les années allant de 1812 à 1817 furent un passage à vide pour le compositeur. C’était une période de changements politiques et esthétiques ; les idéaux révolutionnaires s’étaient exténués d’eux-mêmes avant d’être finalement étouffés par le Congrès de Vienne (1815) – un événement qui marqua la fin de Napoléon, le retour de l’autorité impériale et le début d’un goût plus honnête, moins héroïque et quelque peu mondain en Autriche. Il est ironique que ce soit pendant cette période que la popularité de Beethoven ait connu son apogée, avec des œuvres banales et pompeuses comme La Victoire de Wellington, qui célèbre la défaite du héros qu’il avait immortalisé dix ans auparavant dans l’Eroica. Cette œuvre est presque une parodie du style héroïque et, à ce titre, elle marque bien la fin de cette période.

Le style tardif de Beethoven émerge de ces années difficiles comme quelque chose de très différent des œuvres populaires qu’il avait composées pour le Congrès de Vienne. Dans sa dernière période, ses œuvres prennent une aura oraculaire : elles transmettent des messages universaux à l’humanité, repoussant parfois les limites du compréhensible et exigeant de 33

l’auditeur une attention critique sans précédent. Ces œuvres sont à la fois des discours publics (comme dans les dimensions gigantesques de la sonate dite « Hammerklavier ») et des déclarations privées (comme dans l’avant-dernière sonate, opus 110, qui souffre d’une sorte d’effondrement émotionnel).

Bien qu’il n’y ait que cinq sonates pour piano composées pendant cette dernière période, elles sont essentielles dans la mesure où elles donnent forme à ce nouveau style. La sonate « Hammerklavier », de 1818, marque la résurgence de l’énergie créatrice de Beethoven, mais c’est une énergie plus violente que dans ses styles précédents, comme l’illustre la virulence de la fugue finale ; mais c’est aussi un style plus lyrique qu’auparavant, comme en témoigne le calme monumental du mouvement lent qui, même dans sa noirceur, scintille d’un sens de transcendance spirituelle. Une telle variété indique que ce style tardif n’est pas tant un style qu’une mise en question de la musique héroïque des années médianes, rompant avec ses structures intégrées et tournées vers un but au profit d’une plus grande diversité stylistique.

Les thèmes tendent à devenir souterrains et à prendre des formes de schémas abstraits, tandis que la surface devient plus contingente et sujette à des juxtapositions violentes. La Sonate en mi majeur op. 109 s’ouvre sur une mêlée de fragments dissociés qui se contredisent l’un l’autre dans leurs tempos, leurs textures et leurs caractères, ces matériaux étant néanmoins tenus ensemble par un lien thématique des plus abstraits. La technique du développement thématique est bannie davantage encore par un intérêt renouvelé pour le contrepoint (dont on trouve des exemples dans les sonates opus 101, 106 et 110) et pour les formes à variations dans lesquelles les thèmes sont explorés plutôt qu’ornés (les derniers mouvements des sonates opus 109 et 111 en donnent des exemples). Ces œuvres ne sont d’ailleurs pas seulement tardives dans le temps, mais aussi par leur état d’esprit. Elles commencent à présenter une conscience historique dans la mesure où Beethoven juxtapose des éléments musicaux qui font allusion à différentes époques ; il cite même sa dernière sonate, opus 111, dans les derniers moments de ses Variations Diabelli.

Mais dans tous ces cas, l’histoire n’est plus exprimée comme un mouvement dirigé vers un but, mais elle est brisée en fragments qui semblent transcender le présent dans les aspects éternels et nostalgiques d’une ruine romantique. Dans le tout dernier mouvement de sa toute dernière 34

sonate, où le thème est transformé en un halo de trilles et de gammes, les débris iconoclastes prennent une aura d’icône religieuse flétrie. Comme dans beaucoup de ses œuvres tardives, la musique semble hors du temps – dans tous les sens du terme. Regardant en arrière à partir de ce point, la première sonate paraît être à une très grande distance. Le voyage de Beethoven a été une longue et difficile exploration non seulement des techniques musicales mais aussi des ultimes questions humaines. C’est peut-être la raison pour laquelle Beethoven ne se concevait pas comme un compositeur, mais comme un « poète sonore » (« Tondichter »). S’il est vrai que ses sonates pour piano couvrent toute son existence créatrice, elles « poétisent » une époque de bouleversements et une vie de luttes, posant les questions les plus sérieuses avec un esprit et une sagesse qui continuent à représenter un défi pour nous aujourd’hui.
