Italien galt im späten 16. und gesamten 17. Jahrhundert unbestritten als führendes europäisches Musikzentrum. Hier vollzog sich in der Zeit um 1600 jener tiefgreifende Wandel im musikalischen Stil, der den Grundstein für die gesamte Barockepoche legte. Viele Komponisten experimentierten in dieser Zeit an neuen Formen und Gattungen, dabei wurde auch das große Ausdrucksspektrum von Instrumentalstimmen, insbesondere der Violine, entdeckt.

Italienische Musiker waren daher in ganz Europa gefragt, während umgekehrt viele Instrumentalisten aus dem Norden den Weg über die Alpen nach Italien nahmen, um die aktuellen musikalischen Trends aus erster Hand studieren zu können. Auf diese Weise gelangte der stilprägende italienische Instrumentalstil mit ausdrucksstarken Solo-Sonaten und -Suiten in zahlreiche europäische Regionen und wurde dort vielfach nachgeahmt.

Mehr als drei Jahrzehnte lang – von 1649 bis zum seinem Tode 1680 – diente Johann Heinrich Schmelzer als Musiker in der kaiserlichen Hofkapelle zu Wien. Dabei stieg er vom einfachen Violinisten bis zum Hofkapellmeister auf. Mit seiner Sammlung Sonatae unarum fidium war er 1664 der erste Komponist in den deutschsprachigen Ländern, der Solo-Violinsonaten veröffentlichte. Mit Sicherheit ließ sich Schmelzer in der Konzeption dieser Werke von italienischen Kollegen – etwa Marco Uccellini und Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli – beeinflussen, die kurz zuvor ebenfalls Solosonaten publiziert hatten. Schmelzer gelang es jedoch noch mehr als den Italienern, eine eindrucksvolle Synthese zwischen technisch anspruchsvoller Virtuosität und kantabler Melodik herzustellen.

Alessandro Piccinini war als Lautenist vor allem in Ferrara, Rom und seiner Heimatstadt Bologna aktiv. 1623 stellte er knapp 100 seiner Werke für Erzlaute bzw. Chitarrone in einem opulenten Druck zusammen. Neben den virtuosen Toccaten beeindrucken darin auch die graziösen Correnten und Variationsfolgen.

Der überragende Geiger Biagio Marini zählte zu den ersten italienischen Komponisten, die sich systematisch mit der Instrumentalmusik befassten. Bereits 1617 veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Druck, die Affetti musicali. Zwölf Jahre später erschien dann Marinis Sammlung op. 8.

Schon im Titel dieser Publikation weist der Komponist auf die große interpretatorische Freiheit und den Experimentiercharakter seiner Musik hin: „Werke für jegliche Art von Instrumenten, mit weiteren bemerkenswerten und modernen Erfindungen“. In der Sonata Quarta verlangt Marini ausgiebig das zweistimmige Spiel mit Doppelgriffen.

Das Manuskript XIV 726 aus dem Wiener Minoritenkonvent ist eine der wichtigsten und umfangreichsten Quellen für die Instrumentalmusik des 17. Jahrhunderts aus dem Habsburger Raum. Neben Kompositionen von Biber, Schmelzer, Viviani und Bertali enthält der Band zahlreiche anonyme Werke, die vermutlich in Wien, Prag oder Kremsier entstanden sind.

Das Musicalisch Uhrwerk offenbart den besonderen Humor eines Komponisten, indem mit den leeren e- und a-Saiten der Geige zu einer gleichförmigen Bassmelodie lautmalerisch das Schlagen einer Uhr imitiert wird.

Von der schwedischen Königin Christina wurde der Gitarrist Angelo Michele Bartolotti 1652 an den Hof nach Stockholm berufen, um dort gemeinsam mit einigen Kollegen die italienische Musik populär zu machen. Als die Königin zwei Jahre später abdankte und das Land verließ, folgte Bartolotti ihr nach und hielt sich unter anderem in Innsbruck, Rom und Paris auf. Sein kompositorisches Vermächtnis sind zwei Sammlungen mit Gitarrenmusik, in der sich seine große Meisterschaft auf diesem Instrument ausdrückt.

Als Geiger der Salzburger Hofkapelle übernahm Johann Joseph Vilsmayr den modernen Instrumentalstil von seinem Lehrer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber und veröffentlichte 1715 einen Druck mit sechs Partiten für Violine solo. Unterteilt in viele, kurze Sätze reihen sich diese Werke in die anspruchsvolle geigerische Sololiteratur ein.

Er war vermutlich der einzige europäische Musiker von Rang, der sowohl bei JeanBaptiste Lully als auch bei Arcangelo Corelli studierte: Georg Muffat vereinte in seinen Werken die verschiedensten Stile und sorgte im süddeutsch-österreichischen Raum für eine große Belebung der Instrumentalmusik. Seine einzige Sonate für Violine und Basso continuo entstand bereits 1677 in Prag, wo er sich in habsburgischen Diensten aufhielt.

Aus Montepulciano im Herzen der Toscana gelangte Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli über Venedig nach Innsbruck, wo er an der Seite etlicher Landsleute für den Innsbrucker Erzherzog Ferdinand Karl musizierte. 1660 veröffentlichte er zwei Bände mit je sechs Sonate à violino solo, die bemerkenswerte Zeugnisse geigerischen Virtuosentums im 17. Jahrhundert sind. Auf engstem Raum wechseln hier rezitativische Abschnitte mit Fugati, Variationsreihen, virtuosen Läufen und bizarren Verzierungen ab. Seine eigenwilligen Kompositionen widmete Pandolfi Persönlichkeiten seiner Zeit, darunter auch dem ebenfalls in Innsbruck beschäftigten Sopranisten Giovanni Giacomo Biancucci (La Biancuccia).

GEORG KALLWEIT Der Geiger Georg Kallweit wuchs in einer musisch geprägten Ärztefamilie in Greifswald an der Ostsee auf. Nach dem Besuch der Spezialschule (C. Ph. E. Bach Gymnasium) in Berlin, studierte er an der dortigen „Hanns Eisler“ – Musikhochschule. Neben seinem späteren Engagement beim Rundfunk- Sinfonieorchester Berlin, beschäftigte sich Georg Kallweit schon früh und intensiv mit Stilfragen vor- und frühklassischer Musik. Als Konzertmeister der Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, als Gast anderer renommierter Ensembles und als Kammermusiker ist Kallweit zum vielgefragten Spezialisten avanciert. Er arbeitet als künstlerischer Leiter, Konzertmeister und Solist regelmäßig mit europäischen Barock Orchestern und zunehmend auch mit renommierten „modernen“ Kammer- und Sinfonieorchestern zusammen. Eine ganz besondere Liebe und Neugier des Geigers gilt seit längerem der Entwicklung von genreübergreifenden Konzertformaten. Zeitgenössischer Tanz, Gesang, Lichtdesign, Schauspiel und Musik bilden neue Symbiosen um eindrücklich Geschichten zu erzählen und ganz unterschiedliche Publikumskreise zu begeistern. Im Berliner Radialsystem war Georg Kallweit wiederholt und maßgeblich an der Entwicklung und Produktion von außergewöhnlichen szenischen Konzertprojekten beteiligt.

Diesen Themen widmet sich auch das Encanto Festival in Kaunieinen Finnland, dessen künstlerischer Leiter Georg Kallweit seit 2015 ist.

Es liegen über siebzig, mit vielen internationalen Preisen ausgezeichnete CD- Einspielungen vor, darunter Aufnahmen mit Violinkonzerten bei Harmonia Mundi France, Kammermusik bei Capriccio, Recitals mit Ombra e Luce und vieles mehr. Seine rege internationale Konzerttätigkeit führte ihn seit vielen Jahren in die etablierten Konzertsäle rund um den Erdball. Als Dozent und Leiter von Meisterklassen unterrichtete er an den Musikhochschulen in Leipzig, Weimar, Helsinki, Minsk, St. Petersburg u.a.

BJÖRN COLELL Björn Colell studierte Gitarre an der Hochschule der Künste in Berlin bei Mariangeles Sánchez Benimeli, wo er als Gitarrenpädagoge sowie im Konzertfach mit Auszeichnung abschloss. Ein Studium für Laute und historische Aufführungspraxis am Royal College of Music in London bei Jakob Lindberg und die künstlerische Reifeprüfung an der Hochschule der Künste in Berlin erweiterten seine Ausbildung. Das Spektrum seiner Konzert- und Aufnahmetätigkeit reicht vom solistischen Spiel über Kammermusik bis zur Mitwirkung bei Orchesterwerken und Opern als Continuospieler. Eine intensive internationale Konzerttätigkeit führte ihn an die prominentesten Konzertorte in ganz Europa, Japan, sowie Süd- und Nordamerika. Er spielte unter anderem in der Carnegie Hall, New York, wie auch in der Londoner Royal Albert Hall, im Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires, und, natürlich, in der Berliner Philharmonie. Als festes Mitglied der Berliner Barocksolisten hat er zahlreiche Tourneen und CD Produktionen begleitet. Björn Colell ist außerdem Gast bei vielen anderen Ensembles mit künstlerischer Spezialisierung auf historische Aufführungspraxis, darunter bei dem Freiburger Barockorchester, der Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Drottningholms Barockorchester oder der Berliner Barock Compagney. Gerne und erfolgreich konzertiert er auch in Duobesetzungen. Neben der festen Duopartnerschaft mit dem Barockgeiger Georg Kallweit im Ensemble Ombra e Luce arbeitete er in Duobesetzung mit hervorragenden Instrumentalisten und Sängern, wie z.B. Maurice Steger und Philippe Jaroussky. Es existieren zahlreiche CD-Einspielungen, sowie Rundfunk- und Fernsehproduktionen mit ihm. Seine besondere Qualität als einfühlsamer und gleichzeitig virtuoser Begleiter wird von Kritikern und Publikum gleichermaßen gefeiert. CD Einspielungen mit Björn Colell wie Gluck Italian Arias mit Cecilia Bartoli oder Aufnahmen mit Maurice Steger wurden mit zahlreichen Auszeichnungen geehrt, darunter mit dem ECHO, dem Grammy und dem Choc de la Musique, und waren international erfolgreich. Als Dozent für historische Zupfinstrumente lehrte er zwischen 1993 und 2002 an den Musikhochschulen Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Leipzig und Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden. Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit für Laute/Theorbe, Kammermusik und Basso Continuo an der Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg unterrichtet Björn Colell außerdem als Lehrbeauftragter Laute und Theorbe an der UDK Berlin. Meisterkurse für Lautenisten und Gitarristen ergänzen seine Unterrichtstätigkeit.

UNE TRAVERSÉE ALPINE BAROQUE PAR BERNHARD SCHRAMMEK À la fin du XVIe siècle et tout au long du XVIIe siècle, l’Italie resta le centre incontesté de la musique d’avant-garde en Europe. Autour de 1600, de profonds changements stylistiques s’y opérèrent, jetant les bases pour toute la période baroque. Découvrant le très large spectre d’expressions instrumentales, et en particulier du violon, de nombreux compositeurs expérimentèrent de nouvelles formes et genres. Les musiciens italiens étaient demandés dans toute l’Europe, tandis que de nombreux instrumentistes venus du Nord prenaient le chemin de l’Italie, à travers les Alpes, pour y étudier les dernières tendances musicales. Ainsi le style instrumental italien, avec ses sonates solo et ses suites expressives, se répandit-il dans de nombreuses régions d’Europe, où il fut largement imité.

Durant plus de trente ans – de 1649 jusqu’à sa mort en 1680 –, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer servit comme musicien à la chapelle de la cour impériale de Vienne. D’abord simple violoniste, il y gravit les échelons jusqu’à devenir maître de chapelle. Il fut le premier compositeur à publier des sonates pour violon seul dans les pays germaniques – Sonatae unarum fidium (1664) –, recueil pour lequel il puisa certainement son inspiration chez ses collègues italiens, et notamment Marco Uccellini et Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli, qui avaient publié de telles sonates peu avant. Plus encore que les Italiens, il réussit à créer une synthèse entre virtuosité technique et mélodies cantabile.

Alessandro Piccinini fut principalement actif comme luthiste à Ferrare, Rome et dans sa ville natale de Bologne. En 1623, il compila une centaine de ses œuvres pour archiluth ou chitarrone dans un opulent recueil imprimé. En un espace restreint, des sections de récitatifs alternent avec des fugati, des séries de variations, des traits virtuoses et des ornements bizarres. Pandolfi dédia ses compositions uniques à des personnalités de son temps, y compris le sopraniste Giovanni Giacomo Biancucci (La Biancuccia), également employé à Innsbruck.

Il fut sans doute le seul important musicien européen à étudier à la fois avec Jean-Baptiste Lully et Arcangelo Corelli : Georg Muffat réunit dans ses œuvres les différents styles et fut à la source, au sud de l’Allemagne et de l’Autriche, d’un important renouveau de la musique instrumentale.

Son unique sonate pour violon et basse continue fut composée à Prague en 1677, où il était au service des Habsbourg.

Le violoniste Georg Kallweit a grandi à Greifswald, sur la mer Baltique, dans une famille de médecins nourrie de musique. Après avoir fréquenté le Musikgymnasium Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach à Berlin, il y a étudié à la Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. En marge de son engagement au Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester de Berlin, il s’est vite intéressé de près aux questions de style des musiques pré-classique et classique. En tant que konzertmeister de l’Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, qu’invité d’autres ensembles renommés et que musicien de chambre, Kallweit est bientôt devenu un spécialiste très demandé. Il travaille régulièrement comme directeur artistique, konzertmeister et soliste avec des orchestres baroques européens et avec un nombre croissant de grands orchestres symphoniques et de chambre « modernes ». Depuis longtemps, le violoniste nourrit une curiosité et un intérêt particuliers pour la conception de concerts mêlant plusieurs disciplines. La danse contemporaine, le chant, le design lumière, le théâtre et la musique forment des symbioses nouvelles pour raconter des histoires extraordinaires et inspirer des publics très différents. Au Radialsystem de Berlin, Georg Kallweit a participé à maintes reprises et de façon essentielle au développement et à la production de concerts scéniques remarquables. L’Encanto Festival à Kaunieinen en Finlande, dont Georg Kallweit est le directeur artistique depuis 2015, se consacre également à ce thème. Il a participé à près de 70 enregistrements CD, dont de nombreux ont été récompensés de prix internationaux, notamment des concertos pour violon pour Harmonia Mundi France, de la musique de chambre pour Capriccio, des récitals avec Ombra e Luce et beaucoup d’autres. Depuis de nombreuses années, son intense carrière internationale l’a conduit dans les principales salles de concert mondiales.

En tant que professeur et directeur de master-classes, il enseigne notamment dans les écoles supérieures de musique de Leipzig, Weimar, Helsinki, Minsk et Saint-Pétersbourg.

Björn Colell a étudié la guitare à la Hochschule der Künste à Berlin auprès de Mariangeles Sánchez Benimeli, où il a obtenu les diplômes de concert et de pédagogie. Il a ensuite achevé sa formation en luth et en pratiques d’interprétation historiques au Royal College of Music de Londres auprès de Jakob Lindberg et avec l’examen de maturité à Berlin. Ses activités de concerts et d’enregistrements s’étendent de prestations en soliste à la participation à des œuvres pour orchestre et à des opéras en tant que continuiste en passant par la musique de chambre. Sa carrière internationale de concertiste l’a mené dans les salles de concerts les plus importantes d’Europe, du Japon et d’Amérique. Il a notamment joué au Carnegie Hall de New York, au Royal Albert Hall de Londres, au Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires et, naturellement, à la Philharmonie de Berlin. En tant que membre permanent des Berliner Barock Solisten, il a participé à de nombreuses tournées et productions discographiques. Björn Colell est également invité par de nombreux ensembles spécialisés dans les pratiques d’interprétation historiques, parmi lesquels le Freiburger Barockorchester, l’Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, le Drottningholms Barockorchester et la Berliner Barock-Compagney. In the late sixteenth century and throughout the seventeenth, Italy had an unrivalled reputation as the leading musical centre of Europe. There, around 1600, a radical change in musical style took place, laying the foundation stone for the whole of the Baroque period. Many composers experimented at this time with new forms and genres, discovering in the process the wide expressive range of which individual instruments were capable, particularly the violin. Accordingly, Italian musicians were in demand all over Europe, while in the opposite direction many instrumentalists from northern lands made their way across the Alps to Italy, to be able to study the new musical trends at first hand. In this way the influential Italian instrumental style of strongly expressive solo sonatas and suites reached many different areas of Europe, where it was much imitated.

A BAROQUE ALPINE CROSSING

For more than three decades – from 1649 until his death in 1680 – Johann Heinrich Schmelzer served as a musician at the Imperial Court of Vienna, rising from being a mere violinist to the post of musical director. With his collection Sonatae unarum fidium of 1664 he became the first composer to publish violin sonatas in German-speaking Europe. In planning these works, Schmelzer must certainly have been influenced by Italian colleagues such as Marco Uccellini and Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli who, shortly before, had also published solo sonatas. Yet Schmelzer succeeded even more than the Italians in creating an impressive synthesis of technically demanding virtuosity and cantabile melody.

Alessandro Piccinini was active as a lutenist mainly in Ferrara, Rome, and his native city of Bologna. In 1623 he compiled nearly a hundred of his pieces for archlute or chitarrone in an opulent printed edition. The virtuoso toccatas stand out, as do the graceful courantes and sets of variations.

The pre-eminent violinist Biagio Marini was one of the first of the Italian composers to devote systematically to instrumental music. Already in 1617 he had published his first opus, Affetti musicali. Twelve years later his Op. 8 collection appeared. Already in the title of this publication the composer gives an indication of the great freedom of interpretation of his music, and its experimental character: ‘Works for every kind of instrument, with further remarkable and modern inventions’. In the Sonata Quarta, the fourth of the set, Marini makes free use of twopart writing with double stops.

The Manuscript XIV 726 from the library of the Minorite Convent in Vienna is one of the most important and extensive sources for seventeenth-century instrumental music from the Hapsburg Empire. As well as compositions by Biber, Schmelzer, Viviani and Bertali, the volume contains ˇ ˇ ˇ The numerous anonymous works that were probably composed in Vienna, Prague, or Kromeríz.

Musicalisch Uhrwerk (Musical Clock) reveals its composer’s idiosyncratic sense of humour, as the striking of a clock is onomatopoeically imitated by open E and A strings against the steady, repetitive motion of a bass melody.

In 1652, together with other colleagues, the guitarrist Angelo Michele Bartolotti was appointed

by Queen Christina of Sweden to the royal court at Stockholm, in order to popularize Italian music. When the Queen abdicated two years later and left the country, Bartolotti followed her, residing among other places in Innsbruck, Rome and Paris. His compositional legacy is two collections of guitar music, displaying his great mastery of this instrument.

As violinist of the Salzburg Court, Johann Joseph Vilsmayr adopted the modern instrumental style of his teacher Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, and in 1715 published six solo violin Partitas.

These pieces, divided into many short movements, are among the more demanding works for solo violin.

Probably the only European musician of importance to have studied both with Jean-Baptiste Lully and with Arcangelo Corelli, was Georg Muffat, who united the most varied styles in his works, and brought about a great instrumental revival in the area of southern Germany and Austria. His only Sonata for Violin and Continuo was already composed in 1677 in Prague, where he was engaged in the service of the Hapsburgs.

From Montepulciano in the heart of Tuscany, Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli came via Venice to Innsbruck where, alongside a number of his compatriots, he was a musician of the Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Innsbruck. In 1660 he published two volumes, each containing six Sonatas for Violin Solo, remarkable testaments to seventeenth-century violin virtuosity. Here, in the most compact space, passages of recitative alternate with fugato sections, sets of variations, virtuosic runs and bizarre ornaments. Pandolfi dedicated his compositions to famous personalities of the time, including the male soprano Giovanni Giacomo Biancucci (‘La Biancuccia’), who was also engaged in Innsbruck at the time.

GEORG KALLWEIT The violinist Georg Kallweit grew up in a musical family of physicians in Greifswald, Germany on the Baltic Sea. After attending the C. P. E. Bach Music Gymnasium in Berlin, he studied at the Hanns Eisler College of Music in the German capital. Alongside his ensuing engagement with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Georg Kallweit quickly became intensely concerned with the stylistic questions of early music up to the Classical era. As concertmaster of the Akademie fßr Alte Musik in Berlin, as a guest of other ensembles and as a chamber musician, Georg Kallweit has become a highly sought-after specialist in his field. As an artistic director, concertmaster and soloist, he regularly collaborates with European baroque orchestras as well as with renowned "modern" chamber and symphony orchestras. The development of cross-genre formats, including contemporary dance, singing, lighting design, drama and music – and how they form new symbioses to tell stories and inspire various audiences – has been one of the violinist's special interests and loves. In the Berlin Radialsystem, Georg Kallweit has been repeatedly and decisively involved in the development and production of some remarkable staged concert projects.

He has also been the artistic director of the Encanto Festival in Kauniainen, Finland, since 2015, which also devotes itself to these themes. Over the past several years, Georg Kallweit has played a key role in over seventy CD recordings, many of which have received international awards.

Among them are his interpretation of violin concertos on the Harmonia Mundi France label and chamber music programs on the Capriccio label. He has also been active in recitals with the ensemble Ombra e Luce, which has recorded on the Raumklang label. His international activity as both a soloist and concertmaster has also led him to numerous international concert venues. As a lecturer and director of masterclasses, he has taught at many music conservatories, including those of Leipzig, Weimar, Helsinki, Minsk and St. Petersburg.

Björn Colell studied the guitar with Mariangeles Sánchez Benimeli at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin where he graduated with honours. He holds an ARCM Diploma in Lute and Early Music Studies from the Royal College of Music in London where he studied with Jakob Lindberg. In concerts and recordings, Björn Colell performs as a soloist and is a renowned player of both chamber music and continuo parts in orchestras and operas. In international concert tours, Björn has appeared in the most prominent concert halls of Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Among others, he has performed in New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall of London, the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires and, of course, the Berlin Philharmonie. He is a member of the Berlin Baroque Soloists and a welcome guest in various other ensembles specialised in the performance of early music, such as the the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Freiburger Barock Orchester, the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble and the Berliner Barock-Compagney. He especially enjoys his successful duo partnerships. With baroque violinist Georg Kallweit he established the duo ensemble Ombra e Luce. Other duo partners include renowned instrumentalists and singers such as Maurice Steger, Annette Dasch and Philippe Jaroussky. Critics and audience alike acclaim in his outstanding qualities as both a sensitive accompanist and a virtuoso player.

Björn Colell has performed in numerous internationally acclaimed CD recordings, as well as in radio and television productions. Recordings such as Gluck Italian Arias with Cecilia Bartoli or with Maurice Steger have won numerous prizes such as the ECHO, the Grammy or the Choc de la Musique. Between 1993 and 2002, he taught the lute and historical guitars at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Conservatory in Leipzig, and the Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden.

He now teaches the lute, chamber music and basso continuo at the Hochschule für Musik in Nuremberg and the UdK Berlin and lends his expertise to master-classes in lute and guitar playing.
