RESOUND BEETHOVEN Mit RESOUND bringen wir Beethovens Orchesterwerke in die Säle und Theater ihrer Wiener Erstaufführungen und in die Konzerträume, in denen sie zu seiner Zeit aufgeführt wurden. Vier der sechs Uraufführungsorte der neun Symphonien sind ebenso noch vorhanden wie die insgesamt acht Wiener Säle und Theater, in denen Beethovens Werke zu seinen Lebzeiten gespielt wurden. Unsere Besetzungen entsprechen in Größe und Instrumentarium jenen des Komponisten.

Selbst die ungewöhnlichen Aufstellungen, so die des Chores VOR dem Orchester in der 9. Symphonie, berücksichtigen wir bei unseren Aufführungen.

Unser Produzent Stephan Reh meistert zudem die tontechnische Herausforderung, die klangliche Besonderheit jedes einzelnen Raumes wiederzugeben: die weiche Fülle des barocken Landhaussaales, die kraftvolle Intimität des Eroica-Saales im Palais Lobkowitz, die Transparenz des Alten Universitätssaals, die trockene Klarheit des Theaters in der Josefstadt und die klangliche Größe des Redoutensaales, des damals größten verfügbaren Konzertraums in Wien.

Theatermusiken, Musik, die sich dem Dialog mit großer Dichtung stellt, steht im Zentrum dieser Aufnahme: mit mehreren großen Schauspielern konnten wir Egmont bereits aufführen, dass mit Herbert Föttinger der Direktor jenes Theaters den Rezitationspart übernommen hat, für das Beethoven selbst komponierte, ist ein schönes Symbol. Christopher Hampton hat die verbindenden Texte Goethes und Grillparzers in seiner englischen Übertragung poetisch nachempfunden. Dass John Malkovich, mit dem wir bereits seit Jahren zusammen arbeiten dürfen, den englischen Part Egmonts übernommen hat, erfüllt uns mit großer Freude und Dankbarkeit.

RESOUND BEETHOVEN Avec RESOUND, nous présentons les œuvres pour orchestre de Beethoven dans les salles et théâtres qui ont vu leur création viennoise, et aussi dans les salles de concert où elles furent jouées à l’époque. Quatre des six lieux de création, ainsi que huit autres salles et théâtres viennois où les œuvres de Beethoven furent jouées de son vivant, existent toujours. Nos choix orchestraux sont conformes, tant au niveau de la taille qu’au niveau de l’instrumentation, aux effectifs musicaux mis à la disposition du compositeur. Dans nos performances, nous prenons soin de respecter certaines dispositions inhabituelles, par exemple celle de placer le chœur devant l’orchestre dans la 9ème symphonie.

Notre producteur, Stephan Reh, restitue avec maîtrise les particularités acoustiques de chacun des lieux : la douce plénitude de la grande salle baroque du palais Niederösterreich (Landhaussaal), l’intimité puissante de la salle des fêtes du Palais Lobkowitz (Eroica-Saal), la transparence de la vieille salle de l’université, la clarté sèche du théâtre de la Josefstadt et la grandeur sonore de la salle des redoutes (Redoutensaal), qui était à l’époque la plus grande salle de concert de Vienne.

La musique de théâtre, ce dialogue au service de la grande poésie, est bien le genre musical qui est au centre du présent enregistrement. Nous avons d’ores et déjà pu jouer Egmont avec plusieurs acteurs de renom. Que la partie de récitant soit tenue ici par Herbert Föttinger, le présent directeur du théâtre pour lequel Beethoven composa jadis son œuvre, est un magnifique symbole. De son côté, Christopher Hampton nous a livré une traduction poétique en anglais des textes de Goethe et Grillparzer. Finalement, nous aimerions exprimer notre joie et reconnaissance envers John Malkovich, avec qui nous avons la chance de travailler en collaboration depuis plusieurs années, pour sa tenue exemplaire de la partie d’Egmont en anglais.

RESOUND BEETHOVEN With RESOUND we bring the orchestral works of Beethoven back to the halls and theatres of their Viennese premieres or other venues where they received their earliest performances. Four of the six venues where first performances of one or more of the nine symphonies were held still exist today, as do the eight Viennese halls and theatres where the composer’s works were performed in his lifetime.

Our orchestral forces correspond in size and instrumentarium to those used by the composer, and our performances even respect unusual platform layouts, such as placing the chorus in front of the orchestra in Symphony no. 9.

Our producer Stephan Reh masterfully captures the specific acoustical qualities of each room: the mellow fullness of the Baroque Landhaussaal, the powerful intimacy of the Eroica-Saal in the Palais Lobkowitz, the transparency of the Old University Hall, the dry clarity of the Theater in der Josefstadt, and the voluminous acoustic of the Redoutensaal, in Beethoven’s day the largest concert venue available in Vienna.

Theatre Music - the dialogue in the service of great poetry - is the focus of this recording. We have already been able to perform Egmont with several renowned actors. That the part of the narrator is here taken

by Herbert Föttinger, currently the director of the theatre for which Beethoven himself wrote music, is beautifully fitting. Christopher Hampton has modeled the combined texts of Goethe and Grillparzer into his poetic English translation. It fills us with great joy and gratitude that John Malkovich - with whom we have already had the pleasure of collaborating for several years - has taken on the part of the narrator in the English version. With our interpretations we wish to offer you music in the sound of its own time: we want to add to the possibilities of historical instruments the sound and the aura of the concert halls in which the composer himself conducted and experienced his works. At every step in Vienna one encounters places and signs of a great musical past: to make historic architecture echo with great music and to communicate that perceived authenticity to modern ears – that is the ultimate goal of RESOUND Beethoven.

BEETHOVEN: THEATERMUSIKEN VON DR. JULIA RONGE In vielen Theaterstücken ist Musik integrierter Bestandteil der Handlung – schon in der antiken griechischen Tragödie hatte der Chor als Bühnen- oder Schauspielmusik tragende Rolle. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe hatte für jedes seiner Dramen ein musikdramaturgisches Konzept, das er in zahlreichen entsprechenden Regieanweisungen festhielt. In seiner Tragödie „Egmont“ finden sich nicht nur Lieder, die auf der Szene gesungen werden sollen; auch Hintergrundmusiken sind explizit vorgeschrieben.

Zum Tod Klärchens notierte Goethe beispielsweise: „Eine Musik, Klärchens Tod bezeichnend, beginnt“.

Auch Egmonts Schlaf im Gefängnis soll von Musik begleitet werden. Das Drama schließt nach Goethes Wunsch mit einer Siegessymphonie. Der Dichter konzipierte das Stück mit einer Schauspielmusik, ohne diese jedoch mitzuliefern – ein Problem für Regisseure und Theaterintendanten.

Im Herbst 1809 löste k. k. Hoftheaterdirektor Joseph Hartl in Wien diese Aufgabe, indem er Ludwig van Beethoven für eine Neuinszenierung des „Egmont“ mit der musikalischen Umsetzung des Goetheschen Regiekonzepts beauftragte. Gemäß der Theaterpraxis der Zeit vertonte Beethoven nicht nur die geforderten szenischen Stücke, sondern fügte auch noch eine Ouvertüre sowie Zwischenaktmusiken hinzu. Sicherlich war der Auftrag für den Komponisten nicht nur Broterwerb, denn das Trauerspiel traf durchaus seine politischen Neigungen und Empfindungen. Gegenstand des Goetheschen Dramas ist der Befreiungskampf der Niederlande in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts, die unter dem Joch der spanischen Besatzung zu leiden hatten. Nicht nur der zum Ausdruck gebrachte Freiheitsgedanke dürfte Beethovens Geschmack getroffen haben: 1809 stöhnte Österreich unter der Besatzung der Napoleonischen Truppen – der Freiheitskampf Egmonts spiegelte auch Beethovens Lebenserfahrung und Hoffnungen der Jahre 1809/10.

Da szenische Aufführungen mit einem die Akt-Enden abwartenden vollen Symphonieorchester nicht alltäglich waren, schrieb der deutsche Stenograf und Dichter Friedrich Mosengeil eigens einen Text zur „declamatorischen Begleitung“ von Beethovens „Egmont“-Musik, der auch Goethes Zustimmung 12

fand. Das Gedicht entstand 1821 mit dem Ziel, der Verbreitung von Beethovens Musik zu dienen.

Es sollte „Erinnerungen an die Hauptscenen des Schauspiels” wecken und an jenen Orten „willkommen seyn, wo kein Theater besteht oder doch Goethes Egmont mit Beethovens Musik nicht gegeben wird“ (Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, 1821). Nachdem Mosengeils Text für die Wiener Zensur jedoch zu liberal war, erstellte Franz Grillparzer 1834 eine adaptierte Fassung, die hier in einer gekürzten und von Herbert Föttinger mit zusätzlichen Monologtexten Goethes ergänzten Form vorgetragen wird.

2015 erstellte Christopher Hampton eine englische Nachdichtung des deutschen Textes, der erstmals von Charles Dance beim Granada Festival 2015 vorgetragen wurde und der auf dieser Einspielung von John Malkovich gesprochen wird.

Nur auf wenigen seiner Werke vermerkte Beethoven die Entstehungsgeschichte so detailliert wie bei der Ouvertüre op. 124 zur „Weihe des Hauses“. Auf seinem Manuskript notierte er am unteren Rand des ersten Blattes: „Ouverture geschrieben von L. v. Beethoven zur Eröffnung des Josephstädter Theaters zu Ende September 1822 – aufgeführt am 3ten oktober 1822“. Anlass der Kompositionen war die feierliche Wiedereröffnung des Josefstädter Theaters, die der neue Pächter, Theaterdirektor Karl Friedrich Hensler (1759–1825), nach einjähriger Umbauphase auf den Namenstag des Kaisers am 3.

Oktober 1822 festgelegt hatte. Für die Feierlichkeiten hatte Carl Meisl das Festspiel „Die Weihe des Hauses“ verfasst, für das Beethoven um eine Bühnenmusik gebeten wurde.

Aus der Leipziger Allgemeinen musikalischen Zeitung am 4. Dezember 1822 erfahren wir über Werk und Festlichkeiten: „Theater in der Josephstadt eröffnet. Dieser wiedererstandene Musentempel ist geräumiger, als ehemals, sehr freundlich verziert, die Dekorationen von den geschicktesten hiesigen Meistern verfertigt, und die Gesellschaft zählt mitunter recht wakkere, vielseitig brauchbare Mitglieder.

Der Prolog führte den Titel: Die Weihe des Hauses, gedichtet von Meisl, mit Musik von L. v. Beethoven, ...

Der Meister dirigirte selbst; da man jedoch seinen leider noch immer geschwächten Gehörswerkzeugen nicht sicher vertrauen kann, so war ihm im Rücken Hr. Kapellmeister Gläser postirt, um dem gleichfalls neuorganisirten Orchester des Autors Willensmeynung erst recht eigentlich zu verdollmetschen, welches doppelte, nicht selten ganz verschiedene, Taktiren sich in der That recht sonderbar gestaltete.

Dennoch ging Alles so ziemlich glücklich von statten, bis auf die Chöre, welche manche Dissonanzen extemporirten; der Tonsetzer wurde freudig empfangen, am Schlusse hervorgerufen und mit Jubelbeyfall überhäuft.“ Die neue Ouvertüre op. 124 wurde hoch geschätzt und kam in den Folgejahren noch mehrfach zur Aufführung. Auf Vermittlung von Ferdinand Ries in London erwarb die London Philharmonic Society im Januar 1823 für 18 Monate das Exklusivrecht an der noch unveröffentlichten Ouvertüre und führte sie am 21. April 1823 unter der Leitung von George Smart in ihrem 5. Abonnementskonzert auf. Beethoven selbst brachte die Ouvertüre in seinen großen Akademien vom Mai 1824 neben seiner 9. Symphonie und Teilen aus der Missa Solemnis zur Gehör, wo sie von der Kritik „unstreitig zu Beethovens allervollendetsten Arbeiten“ gezählt wurde. Im August 1824 wurde op. 124 bei der Eröffnung des Königstädter Theaters in Berlin als „Festsymphonie“ und im Dezember desselben Jahres im Rahmen der alljährlichen Wohltätigkeitsveranstaltung für das Bürgerspital im großen Redoutensaal in Wien aufgeführt.

BERNARDA BOBRO Die in Slowenien geborene Sopranistin Bernarda Bobro absolvierte ihr Studium in Graz mit Auszeichnung und ist seitdem vom Londoner Royal Opera House bis zur estnischen Nationaloper in Tallinn auf den bedeutendsten Opernbühnen in ganz Europa zu hören. Ihre Auftritte führten sie u.a. als Marzelline in Beethovens „Fidelio“ an die Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, als Elvira in Rossinis „L’Italiana in Algeri“ an die Opéra de Lille sowie als Violetta in Verdis „La Traviata“ an die Staatsoper Stuttgart. Von 2000 bis 2005 war Bobro Ensemblemitglied der Wiener Volksoper, wo sie in Rollen wie Susanna („Le Nozze di Figaro“, Mozart) und Adele („Die Fledermaus“, Strauss) zu erleben war. Sie arbeitet mit namhaften Dirigenten zusammen, darunter Thielemann, Harnoncourt, Orozco-Estrada und Haselböck, und macht auch häufig auf Festivals wie den Bregenzer Festspielen, den Salzburger Festspielen und dem Glyndebourne Festival Station.

HERBERT FÖTTINGER Der Schauspieler und Regisseur Herbert Föttinger ist langjähriges Ensemblemitglied des Wiener Theaters in der Josefstadt und steht ihm seit 2006 als Künstlerischer Leiter vor. Er debütierte dort als Alfred in Horváths „Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald“ und war in einer Vielzahl verschiedener Hauptrollen zu erleben, darunter Benedikt in Shakespeares „Viel Lärm um Nichts“, Vicomte de Valmont in Laclos’ „Gefährliche Liebschaften“ oder Mackie Messer in der „Dreigroschenoper“ von Brecht.

Daneben gastierte er auf renommierten Bühnen wie dem Schauspiel Köln oder dem Ernst Deutsch Theater Hamburg und trat bei zahlreichen Festspielen auf, u.a. in Salzburg, Reichenau und Bad Hersfeld.

Als Regisseur widmete sich der gebürtige Wiener Werken wie „Kampl“ von Nestroy und den „Buddenbrooks“ von Mann, am Theater an der Wien inszenierte er Beethovens „Fidelio“. Er wurde mit dem Wiener Schauspielerring ausgezeichnet und 2012 zum Kammerschauspieler ernannt.

JOHN MALKOVICH John Malkovich ist einer der bedeutendsten Schauspieler des zeitgenössischen Kinos. Er hat in über 70 Spielfilmen gespielt und ist darüber hinaus als Regisseur und Filmproduzent tätig.

1976 wurde er Mitglied der von Gary Sinise gegründeten Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago.

Sein Kinodebüt machte er 1984 als blinder Untermieter in Ein Platz im Herzen und wurde für diese Rolle für einen Oscar als Bester Nebendarsteller nominiert. Er spielte dann in Filmen wie The Killing Fields – Schreiendes Land, Das Reich der Sonne oder Die Glasmenagerie. Der Durchbruch gelang ihm 1988 mit seiner Darstellung des Vicomte de Valmont in dem Filmdrama Gefährliche Liebschaften.

1992 spielte er neben Gary Sinise als George den Lennie in der Filmversion von John Steinbecks preisgekrönter Novelle Von Mäusen und Menschen. 1994 wurde er für In the Line of Fire – Die zweite Chance erneut für einen Oscar nominiert. Er spielte die Hauptrolle in Charlie Kaufmans 2002 in die Kinos gekommenen Film Being John Malkovich, der gleichzeitig sein Regiedebüt darstellt.

Jüngere Filme sind u. a. Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis, Die Legende von Beowulf, Burn after reading – Wer verbrennt sich hier die Finger?, R.E.D. – Älter, Härter, Besser und R.E.D. 2, Secretariat – Ein Pferd wird zur Legende, Warm Bodies, Schande, die NBC-Fernsehserie Crossbones oder Casanova Variations.

John Malkovich hat wiederholt mit dem Regisseur Michael Sturminger und dem Dirigenten Martin Haselböck zusammengearbeitet, unter anderem in den Musiktheaterprojekten The Infernal Comedy, wo er den österreichischen Serienmörder Jack Unterweger verkörpert, und The Giacomo Variations, wo er Casanova spielt – und singt. Mehr als 100 Vorstellungen wurden weltweit von diesen beiden Stücken gegeben. Ein drittes gemeinsames Projekt für Schauspieler und Orgelspieler, Call Me God, feiert 2017 in Hamburg Premiere und soll anschließend durch die großen Konzerthallen der Welt touren.

MARTIN HASELBÖCK Dirigent, Organist, Komponist, Produzent.

Geboren 1954 in eine Wiener Musikerfamilie, Studien in Wien und Paris.

Als Organist Solist unter Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Wolfgang Sawallisch u.v.a., weltweite Konzerttourneen, Zusammenarbeit mit den Komponisten Ernst Krenek, György Ligeti, Alfred Schnittke u.v.a., zahlreiche Einspielungen, so die Gesamtwerke für Orgel von Mozart und Liszt. Professor an der Musikuniversität Wien.

Als Dirigent Gründer und Leiter des Orchesters Wiener Akademie, Music Director des Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra Los Angeles. Gefragter Gastdirigent bedeutender Orchester in Berlin, Madrid, Philadelphia, Sankt Petersburg, Sydney, San Francisco u.v.a. Dirigent von Opernneuproduktionen bei bedeutenden Festivals.

Aufführungen und Einspielungen der Orchesterwerke von Beethoven und Liszt in authentischer Besetzung und Instrumentarium in den historischen Konzerträumen.

BEETHOVEN: MUSIC FOR THE THEATRE

BY DR. JULIA RONGE In many plays music is an integral part of the action – already in ancient Greek tragedy the chorus played a supporting role performing onstage or incidental music. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had a musicodramatic concept for each of his dramas, which he recorded in numerous appropriate stage directions.

His tragedy Egmont does not contain only songs to be sung onstage; background music too is explicitly prescribed. For the death of Klärchen, for example, Goethe wrote: ‘Music depicting Klärchen’s death begins.’

Even Egmont’s sleep in prison is to be accompanied by music. He indicates that the drama is to close with a ‘victory symphony’. The poet conceived the piece with incidental music, but without providing that music – a problem for stage directors and theatre managers.

In the autumn of 1809 Joseph Hartl, director of the Imperial Court Theatres in Vienna, solved this problem by commissioning Ludwig van Beethoven to provide a musical realisation of Goethe’s staging concept for a new production of Egmont. Following the theatrical practice of the time, Beethoven did not only compose the pieces specifically required by the text, but also added an overture and entr’acte music. This commission was certainly more than a bread-and-butter job for the composer, since the tragedy was thoroughly in keeping with his political inclinations and sentiments. The subject of Goethe’s drama is the sixteenth-century struggle for independence of the Netherlands, which was then suffering under the yoke of Spanish occupation. It was not only the abstract ideal of freedom expressed here that must have suited Beethoven’s mood: in 1809 Austria groaned under the occupation of Napoleonic troops – Egmont’s struggle for freedom also reflected the composer’s personal experience and aspirations of the years 1809 and 1810.

Since staged performances with a full symphony orchestra sitting around waiting for the end of each act were not an everyday occurrence, the German stenographer1 and poet Friedrich Mosengeil wrote a text specifically intended for ‘declamatory accompaniment’ of Beethoven’s Egmont music, which also received Goethe’s assent. The poem was written in 1821 with the aim of encouraging wider diffusion 1

of Beethoven’s music. A review published the same year in the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung said it would evoke ‘memories of the principal scenes of the play’ and ‘be welcome where there is no theatre, or at any rate not one that gives Goethe’s Egmont with Beethoven’s music’. Since Mosengeil’s text was too liberal for the Viennese censorship office, Franz Grillparzer made an adapted version in 1834, which is performed here in abridged form and supplemented with additional Goethe monologues selected by Herbert Föttinger.

In 2015 Christopher Hampton made a free English adaptation of the German text, which was first performed

by Charles Dance at the Granada Festival in 2015 and is spoken on this recording by John Malkovich.

Beethoven recorded the genesis of very few of his works in such detail as he did that of the Overture to the Die Weihe des Hauses (The consecration of the house) op.124. He wrote at the bottom of the first page of his manuscript: ‘Overture written by L. v. Beethoven for the opening of the Josefstadt Theatre at the end of September 1822 – performed on 3 October 1822’. The stimulus for the composition was the ceremonial reopening of the Theater in der Josefstadt, which the new leaseholder, the theatre manager Karl Friedrich Hensler (1759-1825), had fixed for the Emperor’s name day, 3 October 1822, after a year of renovation work. Carl Meisl wrote the festival play Die Weihe des Hauses for the celebrations, and Beethoven was asked to compose the onstage music for it.

The Leipzig Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung of 4 December 1822 reported on the work and the festivities: ‘Theatre in the Josefstadt opened. This revived temple of the Muses is more spacious than the former one, very pleasantly decorated, the scenery made by the most skilled local masters, and the company includes some very decent, versatile and useful members. The prologue bore the title “The Consecration of the House”, written by Meisl, with music by L. van Beethoven . . . The Master conducted in person; but since his unfortunately further weakened organs of hearing cannot be safely relied on, Herr Kapellmeister Gläser was stationed behind him in order to convey the author’s intentions to the equally newly constituted orchestra; this double time-beating, often quite divergent, in fact created a very odd impression. Nevertheless, everything came off fairly well, apart from the choruses, which extemporised some dissonances; the composer was greeted warmly, called back at the end and showered with jubilant applause.’

The new Overture op.124 was highly regarded and was revived several times in subsequent years. Through the intermediary of Ferdinand Ries, then resident in London, that city’s Philharmonic Society acquired the exclusive rights to the unpublished overture for eighteen months in January 1823 and performed it at its fifth subscription concert on 21 April 1823, conducted by Sir George Smart. The composer himself included the overture in his large-scale academies of May 1824 alongside the Ninth Symphony and parts of the Missa Solemnis, when the critics rated it as ‘unquestionably among Beethoven’s most accomplished works’. In August 1824 it was given at the opening of the Königstädter Theater in Berlin under the title ‘festive symphony’, and again in December of the same year at the annual charity event for the Bürgerspital (civic poorhouse) in the Grosser Redoutensaal in Vienna.

BERNARDA BOBRO The Slovenian-born soprano Bernarda Bobro completed her studies in Graz with distinction and has since been heard in the leading opera houses throughout Europe, from the Royal Opera House in London to the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn. Engagements have taken her to the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam as Marzelline in Beethoven’s Fidelio, the Opéra de Lille as Elvira in Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri and the Staatsoper Stuttgart as Violetta in Verdi’s La traviata. From 2000 to 2005 she was an ensemble member of the Vienna Volksoper, where she was heard in such roles as Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro, Mozart) and Adele (Die Fledermaus, Strauss). She works with such renowned conductors as Thielemann, Harnoncourt, Orozco-Estrada and Haselböck, and is also a frequent guest at festivals including Bregenz, Salzburg and Glyndebourne.

HERBERT FÖTTINGER The actor and director Herbert Föttinger is a longstanding member of the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna and has been its artistic director since 2006. He made his debut there as Alfred in Horváth’s Tales from the Vienna Woods and has been seen in a variety of leading roles there, including Benedict in Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing, Vicomte de Valmont in Laclos’s Dangerous Liaisons and Mack the Knife in Brecht’s Threepenny Opera.

He has also guested on prestigious stages such as the Schauspiel Köln and the Ernst Deutsch Theater in Hamburg and appeared at numerous festivals, including Salzburg, Reichenau and Bad Hersfeld.

As a director, this native Viennese has devoted himself to works like Nestroy’s Kampl and Mann’s Buddenbrooks, and has staged Beethoven’s Fidelio at the Theater an der Wien. He has been awarded the Wiener Schauspielerring and was appointed Kammerschauspieler in 2012.

JOHN MALKOVICH John Malkovich is one of the most important actors of today’s cinema. He has acted in more than 70 movies in addition to directing and producing films.

In 1976 he became a charter member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, founded by Gary Sinise. He made his feature film debut in 1984 as the blind lodger in Places in the Heart; his portrayal received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in films such as The Killing Fields, Empire of the Sun and The Glass Menagerie. A few years later, he shot to fame when he portrayed the sinister Vicomte de Valmont in the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons.

He starred in the 1992-film adaptation of John Steinbeck’s award-winning novella Of Mice and Men as Lennie alongside Gary Sinise as George. In 1994, he was nominated for another Oscar for In the Line of Fire. He also played the title role in Charlie Kaufman’s Being John Malkovich. The Dancer Upstairs, Malkovich’s directorial film debut, was released in 2002. Recent films include The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Beowulf, Burn After Reading, Changeling, Red 1 & 2, Secretariat, Warm Bodies, Disgrace, the NBC television series Blackbeard, and The Giacomo Variations.

John Malkovich has worked frequently with the Austrian director Michael Sturminger and conductor Martin Haselböck. Together they collaborated on the Music-Theatre projects The Infernal Comedy, in which he plays the Austrian serial killer Jack Unterweger, and The Giacomo Variations, in which he stars – and sings – as Casanova. Over 100 performances of these works have been given internationally.

A third collaboration, Call Me God, for actor and organist, will premiere in Hamburg in 2017 and tour to major concert halls around the world.

BEETHOVEN : MUSIQUES DE SCÈNE PAR DR. JULIA RONGE Dans de nombreuses pièces de théâtre, la musique est un élément constitutif de l’action – et ce dès les tragédies antiques, dans lesquelles le chœur jouait un rôle important comme musique de scène.

Quand il écrivait une œuvre pour la scène, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe avait des idées de musique dramatique qu’il notait dans de nombreuses indications de mise en scène. Pour sa tragédie Egmont, il n’a pas seulement prévu des airs qui doivent être chantés sur scène, mais aussi des morceaux de musique d’accompagnement. Pour la mort de Klärchen, Goethe indique par exemple : « Une musique commence, qui caractérise la mort de Klärchen ». Le sommeil d’Egmont dans la prison doit lui aussi être accompagné de musique. Et la pièce doit se conclure par une symphonie de victoire. Le poète a ainsi conçu sa pièce avec une musique de scène sans néanmoins la fournir – ce qui pose un problème aux metteurs en scènes et aux directeurs de théâtre. À l’automne 1809, à l’occasion d’une nouvelle mise en scène d’Egmont, le directeur du théâtre de la cour royale et impériale de Vienne, Joseph Hartl, trouva une solution en demandant à Ludwig van Beethoven de composer une musique répondant aux indications de mise en scène de Goethe. Conformément aux habitudes théâtrales du temps, Beethoven ne se contenta pas de mettre en musique les morceaux scéniques exigés, il ajouta une ouverture ainsi que des intermèdes entre les actes. Le compositeur n’avait sans doute pas accepté cette commande uniquement pour des raisons financières, car la pièce correspondait tout à fait à ses sentiments et à ses tendances politiques. Le sujet du drame de Goethe est la lutte de libération des Pays-Bas sous le joug de l’occupation espagnole, dans la deuxième moitié du XVIe siècle. L’idée de liberté exprimée dans la pièce ne dut pas être le seul aspect qui plut à Beethoven : en 1809, l’Autriche souffrait de l’occupation des troupes napoléoniennes – la lutte de libération d’Egmont reflétait aussi l’expérience de Beethoven et ses espoirs en ces années 1809-1810. Étant donné que les représentations théâtrales comprenant un orchestre symphonique au grand complet obligé d’attendre les fins d’actes n’étaient pas fréquentes, Friedrich Mosengeil, sténographe et poète 28

allemand, écrivit un texte exprès pour une « déclamation d’accompagnement » de la musique composée par Beethoven pour Egmont, texte qui rencontra l’approbation de Goethe. Le poème fut écrit en 1821 dans le but de servir à la diffusion de la musique de Beethoven. Il devait éveiller « des réminiscences des principales scènes de la pièce » et « être bienvenu là où il n’y a pas de théâtre ou là où l’Egmont de Goethe n’est pas représenté avec la musique de Beethoven » (Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, 1821). Comme le texte de Mosengeil était néanmoins trop libéral pour la censure de Vienne, Franz Grillparzer en fit une version adaptée en 1834 : c’est celle qui est récitée ici, dans une version abrégée et complétée avec des monologues supplémentaires de Goethe choisis par Herbert Föttinger.

En 2015, Christopher Hampton écrivit une adaptation anglaise du texte allemand, qui fut récitée pour la première fois par Charles Dance au Festival de Grenade en 2015 et qui est dite sur cet enregistrement par John Malkovich.

Rares sont les œuvres de Beethoven pour lesquelles le compositeur nota de façon aussi détaillée leur genèse que pour l’Ouverture op. 124 pour « La consécration de la maison ». Sur son manuscrit, il écrivit sur le bord inférieur de la première page : « Ouverture écrite par L. v. Beethoven pour l’inauguration du Théâtre de la Josephstadt fin septembre 1822 – exécutée le 3 octobre 1822 ». L’œuvre est née à l’occasion de la réouverture solennelle du théâtre de la Josefstadt qu’après des travaux de transformation d’un an, le nouveau gérant, le directeur du théâtre Karl Friedrich Hensler (1759-1825), avait fixée au jour de la fête de l’empereur, le 3 octobre 1822. Pour la cérémonie, Carl Meisl avait écrit une pièce de circonstances, « La Consécration de la maison », pour laquelle on demanda à Beethoven de composer une musique de scène.

Dans le Leipziger Allgemeinen musikalischen Zeitung du 4 décembre 1822, on lit à propos de l’œuvre et des festivités : « Inauguration du théâtre de la Josephstadt. auditifs toujours affaiblis, on avait posté dans son dos M. Gläser, Kapellmeister, pour traduire véritablement ce que voulait l’auteur à l’intention de l’orchestre, lui aussi nouvellement réorganisé, et cette double battue, souvent tout à fait divergente, prit dans les faits une tournure vraiment étrange. Tout se déroula néanmoins assez heureusement, à l’exception des chœurs qui improvisèrent quelques dissonances ; le compositeur fut joyeusement accueilli, rappelé à la fin et couvert d’applaudissements enthousiastes ».

La nouvelle ouverture, op. 124, fut grandement appréciée et exécutée plusieurs fois encore au cours des années suivantes. En janvier 1823, par l’intermédiaire de Ferdinand Ries, la London Philharmonic Society acquit pour dix-huit mois les droits exclusifs sur l’ouverture encore inédite et l’exécuta le 21 avril 1823 sous la direction de George Smart lors de son cinquième concert d’abonnement. Beethoven lui-même fit entendre son Ouverture lors de ses grandes académies de mai 1824 avec sa neuvième symphonie et des parties de sa Missa solemnis. À cette occasion, la critique compta l’ouverture « incontestablement au nombre des ouvrages de Beethoven les plus parfaitement accomplis ». En août 1824, elle fut jouée lors de l’inauguration du théâtre de la Königstadt à Berlin comme « symphonie solennelle » et, en décembre de la même année, dans le cadre des manifestations de bienfaisance annuelles pour l’hôpital municipal dans la grande salle de la redoute, à Vienne.

Il a par ailleurs été invité à jouer dans de nombreux théâtres célèbres, comme le Schauspiel de Cologne ou l’Ernst Deutsch Theater de Hambourg, et lors de plusieurs festivals, notamment à Salzbourg, Reichenau et Bad Hersfeld. Comme metteur en scène, ce Viennois de naissance s’est consacré à des œuvres comme Kampl de Johann Nepomuk Nestroy et les Buddenbrook de Thomas Mann, et il a mis en scène Fidelio de Beethoven au Theater an der Wien. Il a été décoré du Wiener Schauspielerring et nommé en 2012 Kammerschauspieler.

JOHN MALKOVICH John Malkovich est un des plus importants acteurs de cinéma actuels. Il a joué dans plus de 70 films, sans compter ceux qu’il a dirigés et produits.

Son premier film comme réalisateur, La Danse de l’oubli, est sorti en 2002. MARTIN HASELBÖCK Chef d’orchestre, organiste, compositeur et producteur.

Né en 1954 dans une famille musicienne viennoise, il a fait ses études à Vienne et à Paris.

Comme organiste, il a joué en soliste lors de tournées de concerts dans le monde entier sous la direction de Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel et Wolfgang Sawallisch, entre autres.

Il a travaillé notamment avec les compositeurs Ernst Krenek, György Ligeti, Alfred Schnittke, et réalisé de nombreux enregistrements, comme l’intégrale de l’œuvre d’orgue de Mozart et de Liszt. Il est professeur à l’Université de musique de Vienne.

En tant que chef d’orchestre, il a fondé l’Orchester Wiener Akademie qu’il dirige.

Il est directeur musical de l’orchestre Musica Angelica Baroque de Los Angeles et chef invité de plusieurs orchestres importants à Berlin, Madrid, Philadelphie, Saint-Petersburg, Sydney, San Francisco, etc.

Il est le créateur et le producteur de spectacles de théâtre et de musique d’un genre nouveau, avec des partenaires comme John Malkovich, Michael Sturminger et Virgil Widrich (The Infernal Comedy, Casanova Variations, Black Cat). The crossbow fires: only two in the circle!

Congratulations ring out for the champion; Then one last challenger steps forward, aims: “One! Two! Three! Four!”

“Four in the circle. What the hell, he’s done it!”

“Long live the King, three cheers! And three cheers more!”

The crowd is roaring And pushing in and shaking his free hand Somebody says: “He’s one of Egmont’s people!”

Egmont! The name goes ringing round the square The victor of St. Quentin, The hero of Gravelingen!

Hurrah! And they rejoice and raise their glasses high.

9 Melodrama

Zur Musik sprechen, wie in der Partitur notiert Süßer Schlaf, du kommst wie ein Reines Glück, ungebeten, unerfleht, am willigsten. – Du lösest die Knoten der strengen Gedanken; Vermischest alle Bilder der Freude und des Schmerzes. Ungehindert Fließt der Kreis innerer Harmonien, und, Eingehüllt in gefälligen Wahnsinn, Versinken wir und hören auf zu sein.

Egmont entschläft. Hinter seinem Lager scheint sich die Mauer zu öffnen, eine glänzende Erscheinung zeigt sich: Die Freiheit in himmlischen Gewande. Sie hat die Züge von Klärchen und neigt sich gegen den schlafenden Helden.

Sie heißt ihn froh sein, und indem sie andeutet, dass sein Tod den Provinzen die Freiheit werde, erkennt sie ihn als Sieger und reicht ihm einen Lorbeerkranz.

10 Egmont erwacht, das Gefängnis wird vom Morgen mäßig erhellt.

Seine erste Bewegung ist nach dem Haupte zu greifen: er steht auf und sieht sich um, indem er die Hand auf dem Haupte behält.

In der Ferne hört man eine Trommel

Verschwunden ist der Kranz ... Du schönes Bild, Das Licht des Tages hat dich verscheuchet!

She tells him to be happy, explaining to him that his death will bring about the freedom of the provinces, hailing him as a conqueror and crowning him with laurels.

Egmont s’endort. Derrière sa couche, le mur paraît s’entrouvrir, laissant voir une brillante apparition : la liberté dans un vêtement céleste. Elle a les traits de Klärchen et se penche vers le héros endormi. Elle l’invite à être heureux, et en lui annonçant que sa mort sera la liberté des Provinces, elle le déclare vainqueur et lui tend une couronne de lauriers.

Egmont se réveille, la prison est faiblement éclairée par le matin. Son premier mouvement est de porter sa main à sa tête ; il se lève et regarde autour de lui en tenant toujours sa main sur sa tête.
