Par leur poésie au lyrisme intime et passionné, par leur écriture raffinée révélant peu à peu une profondeur inédite, les treize Nocturnes de Gabriel Fauré forment l’ensemble le plus significatif de son œuvre pour piano seul. Composés sur une période de quarante-six ans (1875-1921), ils témoignent de l’admirable évolution stylistique du musicien. D’une expression ancrée dans le romantisme – le 1er Nocturne est contemporain de la Symphonie espagnole de Lalo, et marque les débuts de l’école française de piano – à une esthétique de plain-pied dans la modernité du XXe siècle, Fauré s’épanouit, sculpte sa personnalité musicale. Tous ses Nocturnes ne sont pas d’égale importance, mais ils forment un recueil dont la diversité et la progression offrent un parfait panorama de son art.

Comme ailleurs, mais ici en particulier, Fauré est l’héritier de Chopin. Ses Nocturnes procèdent du genre inventé par John Field et transfiguré par le musicien polonais : un chant élégiaque et orné se déployant sur un tapis d’arpèges, une structure ‘ABA’ et un climat nostalgique d’introspection.

Mais ce modèle déjà varié par Chopin est réincarné par Fauré, qui trouve rapidement un ton personnel, faisant d’ailleurs un usage plutôt rare de l’écriture arpégée et abandonnant parfois la structure tripartite. En outre, ce n’est plus, comme chez Chopin, à la nuit romantique que les Nocturnes de Fauré rendent hommage ni au bel canto de Bellini que leurs arabesques mélodiques font référence. Ils explorent plutôt une expressivité fin-de-siècle, bien française dans l’élégance de ses épanchements comme dans sa réserve plus tardive.

Son fils, Philippe Fauré-Fremiet, affirma que le compositeur « eût mille fois préféré désigner ses Nocturnes, ses Impromptus, même ses Barcarolles, sous la simple mention de Pièce pour le piano no tant… ». L’affirmation souligne combien la production pianistique de Fauré est pure de toute anecdote. Cependant, les Nocturnes se distinguent des autres pièces du musicien, précisément par leur absence de figures d’écriture ou de rythme caractéristiques, mais aussi par ce qui les unit : leur

D’emblée, Fauré réussit un coup de maître avec son 1er Nocturne (1875), équilibré et personnel malgré l’empreinte encore présente de Chopin, d’une expression intense que Vladimir Jankélévitch qualifiait de « tristesse sans cause, tristesse d’exister en général ». Comme ce sera souvent le cas dans le recueil, le dernier volet du morceau propose une variation réconciliatrice du premier, « message de la paix retrouvée » selon l’expression du même Jankélévitch. Le 2e Nocturne (1881) en reprend les principales caractéristiques, opposant un duo quasi vocal à une brillante toccata.

Le 3e Nocturne (1883), sans doute le plus léger de la série, abandonne le climat romantique pour l’effusion sonore et les harmonies enivrantes dont Fauré a le secret. Celles-ci sont encore présentes dans le 4e Nocturne (1884), l’un des plus séducteurs avec son thème évanescent et son irrésistible partie médiane qui monte en tension. Cette sensualité se voile quelque peu dans le 5e Nocturne (1884), typiquement fauréen dans son expressivité mi-figue mi-raisin, contrebalancée par un épisode virtuose où passe l’ombre de Chopin. Désormais, les séductions harmoniques de Fauré, paradoxalement héritées de son rigoureux apprentissage à l’école Niedermeyer, se feront plus feutrées.

Le célèbre 6e Nocturne (1894), chef-d’œuvre pianistique du musicien selon certains, marque son entrée dans une période où l’écriture conserve encore son opulence, mais s’accorde à une profondeur nouvelle de la pensée. « Ce divin nocturne verse dans nos cœurs […] le vaste et tendre apaisement promis à ceux qui ont souffert », écrivait Jankélévitch. À une personne qui lui demandait sous quel ciel merveilleux il en avait trouvé le début, Fauré répondit avec laconisme : « Sous le tunnel du Simplon. » Manière de prévenir toute vision sentimentale de la création musicale. Fort sombre d’abord, le 7e Nocturne (1898) annonce le dépouillement de la dernière période avant que sa partie médiane ne gagne de plus paisibles régions. Le 8e Nocturne (1902), qui est aussi l’une des Pièces brèves de l’opus 84, n’accéda au rang de nocturne qu’à la demande de Julien Hamelle, l’éditeur de Fauré. D’où sa concision, qui n’empêche pas son intérêt, tant sa

tendance commune à la rêverie, à la méditation d’états de conscience en demi-teinte, sans noirceur ni dramatisme excessifs. « Ce sont des pièces lyriques » qui évoquent « la secrète communion de l’homme et des choses invisibles », écrivait encore Philippe Fauré-Fremiet avec sensibilité.

phrase ininterrompue recèle de tendresse. Il s’agit en outre de la dernière page sereine, dans le recueil, avant l’élévation spirituelle, la concentration et les tons mineurs des derniers morceaux, dans lesquels Fauré forge une modernité qui n’appartiendra qu’à lui.

Le 9e Nocturne (1908) représente bien cette exigence nouvelle, par sa simplicité formelle, son économie de moyens (thème unique d’abord murmuré, écriture pianistique épurée), son harmonie dépouillée de toute joliesse et sa concentration expressive. Le 10e Nocturne (1908) en est assez proche, plus passionné cependant – mais cette fois la conclusion en reste sur un constat résigné.

Dédié à Noémi Lalo, l’épouse du critique Pierre Lalo brutalement disparue, le 11e Nocturne (1913) est une élégie à l’émotion contenue mais poignante. D’une grande beauté, son thème hésitant, qui cherche à s’élever mais retombe inexorablement, est développé jusqu’aux limites de l’abstraction, avant la conclusion d’une prodigieuse étrangeté. Alfred Cortot avait raison de reconnaître ici « la dignité, la réserve chaste et douloureuse des monuments funéraires de l’antiquité ». Par son rythme balancé, le 12e Nocturne (1915) évoque une barcarolle (titre d’abord envisagé par Fauré), mais une barcarolle grave, hésitant sans cesse entre mineur et majeur, tourmentée jusqu’à l’incandescence.

Avec le 13e Nocturne (1921), le musicien jette un regard rétrospectif sur l’ensemble du recueil, pour livrer comme l’archétype du nocturne, autant dans la profondeur expressive des parties extrêmes que dans la puissante tempête qu’elles enserrent. Fauré n’aurait pu mieux faire ses adieux au piano seul qu’avec cette pièce définitive, d’une structure limpide et d’une intensité unique, s’élevant vers l’absolu.

the nocturnes of gabriel fauré In their poetry imbued with intimate and passionate lyricism, their refined style which gradually reveals an unprecedented profundity, the thirteen Nocturnes of Gabriel Fauré form the most significant group in his œuvre for solo piano. These pieces composed over a period of forty-six years (1875-1921) bear witness to their creator’s admirable stylistic development. From an expression rooted in Romanticism – the First Nocturne is contemporary with Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole, and marks the beginnings of the French piano school – to an aesthetic fully integrated with the modernity of the twentieth century, Fauré blossomed as he modelled his musical personality. Not all his Nocturnes are of equal importance, but they form a set whose diversity and evolution offer a perfect panorama of his art.

As elsewhere, but here in particular, Fauré is Chopin’s heir. His Nocturnes belong to the genre invented by John Field and transfigured by the Polish composer: an elegiac and ornate melody unfolding over a background of arpeggios, an ABA structure and a nostalgic climate of introspection.

But this model, already varied by Chopin, found a novel incarnation in Fauré, who quickly hit upon a personal tone, which in fact makes comparatively rare use of arpeggiated textures and sometimes abandons the ternary structure. Moreover, unlike Chopin’s, his Nocturnes no longer pay homage to Romantic night, nor do their melodic arabesques refer to Bellinian bel canto. Rather, they explore a fin-de-siècle expressiveness, very French in the elegance of its effusions as in its later reserve.

His son, Philippe Fauré-Fremiet, asserted that the composer ‘would have preferred a thousand times to designate his Nocturnes, his Impromptus, even his Barcarolles, by the simple title “Piano Piece no. such-and-such” . . .’. The statement underlines how devoid Fauré’s piano output is of anecdotal elements. However, the Nocturnes stand apart from his other pieces, precisely because of the absence of characteristic figures or rhythms, but also of what unites them: their shared tendency towards reverie, towards meditation on subdued moods, without excessive darkness

Fauré at once achieved a masterstroke with his First Nocturne (1875), balanced and personal despite the still perceptible imprint of Chopin: it is an intensely expressive piece that Vladimir Jankélévitch described as ‘sadness without cause, the sadness of existence in general’. As will often be the case in the collection, the last section of the piece presents a reconciliatory variation of the first, a ‘message of peace regained’, to quote Jankélévitch once more. The Second Nocturne (1881) takes over the main characteristics of its predecessor, setting a quasi-vocal duo against a brilliant toccata. The Third (1883), probably the lightest of the series, abandons the Romantic atmosphere for the sonic effusions and intoxicating harmonies to which Fauré held the secret. These are still present in the Fourth Nocturne (1884), one of the most seductive, with its evanescent theme and its irresistible middle section that increases the tension. Such sensuality is muted to some extent in the Fifth Nocturne (1884), typically Faurean in its ambivalent expressiveness, counterbalanced by a virtuoso episode over which the shadow of Chopin flits. From this point onwards, Fauré’s harmonic seductions, paradoxically inherited from his rigorous training at the École Niedermeyer, were to become more discreet.

The famous Sixth Nocturne (1894), which some commentators regard as the composer’s pianistic masterpiece, marks his entry into a period in which the texture still conserves its opulence, but is attuned to a new depth of thought. ‘This divine nocturne pours into our hearts . . . the vast and tender consolation1 promised to those who have suffered’, wrote Jankélévitch. When asked under what wonderful sky he had found the opening, Fauré replied laconically ‘Under the Simplon tunnel’: his way of forestalling any sentimental vision of musical creation. Very dark at first, the Seventh Nocturne (1898) announces the austerity of the late period, before its middle section enters more peaceful regions. The Eighth Nocturne (1902), which is also one of the Pièces brèves op.84, only achieved the status of a nocturne at the request of Julien Hamelle, Fauré’s publisher. or drama. ‘They are lyrical pieces’ that evoke ‘the secret communion of humanity and things invisible’, as Philippe Fauré-Fremiet sensitively observed.

The Ninth Nocturne (1908) is a good example of this new and demanding style, with its formal simplicity, its economy of resources (a single theme, murmured at first, and a distilled pianistic idiom), its harmony shorn of all prettiness, and its expressive concentration. The Tenth Nocturne (1908) is quite similar, though more passionate – but this time the conclusion does not renounce its air of resignation. Dedicated to Noémi Lalo, the wife of the critic Pierre Lalo, after her sudden death, the Eleventh Nocturne (1913) is an elegy of contained yet poignant emotion. Its beautiful, hesitant theme, which seeks to rise but falls inexorably back, is developed to the limits of abstraction, before a conclusion of prodigious strangeness. Alfred Cortot was right to perceive here ‘the dignity, the chaste and sorrowful reserve of the funerary monuments of antiquity’. The swaying rhythm of the Twelfth Nocturne (1915) evokes a barcarolle (the title Fauré initially envisaged for it), but a serious one, constantly hesitating between minor and major, tormented to the point of incandescence. With the Thirteenth Nocturne (1921), the composer casts a retrospective glance over the collection as a whole, producing as it were the archetype of the nocturne, as much in the expressive profundity of the outer sections as in the powerful tempest they enclose. Fauré could not have bidden farewell to the solo piano in more appropriate fashion than with this definitive piece, limpid in structure and unique in its intensity, soaring towards the absolute.

It is also the last serene piece in the set, before the spiritual elevation, the concentration and the minor keys of the late nocturnes, in which Fauré forged a modernity that was destined to remain his alone.

Wie auch sonst, doch hier ganz besonders, ist Fauré der Erbe Chopins. Seine Nocturnes haben ihren Ursprung in der von John Field erfundenen Gattung, die vom polnischen Musiker verklärt wurde: ein elegischer, verzierter Gesang, der sich auf einem Teppich von Arpeggios ausbreitet, ein Aufbau „A-B-A“ und ein nostalgisches Klima der Introspektion. Doch dieses bereits von Chopin abgewandelte Modell wird bei Fauré neu geboren und findet bei ihm rasch einen persönlichen Tonfall, wobei er übrigens die Arpeggios eher selten verwendet und manchmal auch auf den dreiteiligen Aufbau verzichtet. Außerdem verherrlichen Faurés Nocturnes die romantische Nacht nicht mehr, wie das bei Chopin der Fall war, und ihre melodischen Arabesken berufen sich auch nicht auf Bellinis Bel canto. Sie befassen sich vielmehr gründlich mit einer Ausdruckskraft Fin de siècle, die durch die Eleganz ihrer Ergüsse sowie ihre spätere Zurückhaltung sehr französisch ist.

Sein Sohn Philippe Fauré-Fremiet behauptete, dass der Komponist „seine Nocturnes, seine Impromptus, ja sogar seine Barcarolles tausendmal lieber mit dem einfachen Titel Pièce [Stück] für Klavier Nr. x... bezeichnet hätte“. Diese Behauptung betont, wie sehr das pianistische Schaffen

Fauré gelingt auf Anhieb eine Glanzleistung mit seinem 1. Nocturne (1875), das trotz des noch präsenten Einflusses Chopins ausgeglichen, persönlich und von intensiver Ausdruckskraft ist, die Vladimir Jankélévitch als „Traurigkeit ohne Grund, ganz allgemein Traurigkeit zu existieren“ bezeichnete. Wie in dieser Sammlung oft der Fall bietet der letzte Teil des Stückes eine versöhnliche Variante des ersten, eine „Nachricht des wiedergefunden Friedens“ wie derselbe Jankélévitch meint. Das 2. Nocturne (1881) nimmt die Hauptmerkmale wieder auf und stellt ein fast vokales Duo einer brillanten Toccata gegenüber. Das dritte (1883), das sicher das unbeschwerteste der Serie ist, verzichtet auf das romantische Klima zugunsten eines klanglichen Gefühlsausbruchs und berauschender Harmonien, auf die sich Fauré wie kein anderer versteht. Man findet sie auch im 4.

Nocturne (1884), das durch sein sich verflüchtigendes Thema und den unwiderstehlichen Mittelteil mit seiner sich steigernden Spannung eines der verführerischsten ist. Diese Sinnlichkeit trübt sich etwas im 5. Nocturne (1884) mit seiner halbherzigen, für Fauré charakteristischen Ausdruckskraft, die aber durch eine virtuose Episode ausgeglichen wird, in der Chopins Schatten zu spüren ist. Von da an werden Faurés harmonische Verführungskünste, die er paradoxerweise von seiner strengen Lehrzeit an der Niedermeyer-Schule geerbt hat, gedämpfter.

Das berühmte 6. Nocturne (1894), ein pianistisches Meisterwerk des Musikers, das, wie so manche meinen, den Beginn einer Periode kennzeichnet, in der seine Kompositionsweise weiterhin noch üppig ist, sich aber eine neue Gedankentiefe erlaubt. „Dieses göttliche Nocturne gießt in unsere Herzen [...] die umfassende und zärtliche Beruhigung, die jenen versprochen wurde, die gelitten haben“, schrieb Jankélévitch. Einer Person, die Fauré fragte, unter welchem wunderbaren Himmel er den Beginn gefunden hatte, antwortete er lakonisch: „Unter dem Simplontunnel“, wodurch

Faurés frei von jeder Anekdote ist. Dennoch unterscheiden sich die Nocturnes von anderen Stücken des Musikers eben durch das Fehlen jeglicher charakteristischer kompositorischer oder rhythmischer Figuren, aber auch durch das, was sie gemeinsam haben: ihr Hang zur Träumerei, zur Meditation von leicht getrübten Bewusstseinszuständen ohne exzessive Melancholie oder Dramatik. „Es sind lyrische Stücke“, die „die geheime Verbindung des Menschen mit unsichtbaren Dingen“ beschreiben, meinte feinfühlig Philippe Fauré-Fremiet.

Das 9. Nocturne (1908) ist für diese neue Anforderung charakteristisch durch seine formale Einfachheit, seine sparsamen Mittel (ein einziges, zunächst geflüstertes Thema, eine pianistisch schlichte Kompositionsweise), seine Harmonie ohne jede Anmut und seine expressive Konzentration. Das 10. Nocturne (1908) ist ihm sehr nahe verwandt, aber leidenschaftlicher – doch schließt es diesmal mit einer resignierten Feststellung. Das Noémi Lalo, der Gattin des plötzlich verstorbenen Kritikers Pierre Lalo, gewidmete 11. Nocturne (1913) ist eine Elegie mit gezügelter, doch ergreifender Emotion. Sein zögerndes Thema ist sehr schön. Es versucht sich emporzuheben, fällt aber unabwendbar wieder und wird bis an die Grenzen zur Abstraktion weiter entwickelt, bis es zu einem Abschluss von außergewöhnlicher Sonderbarkeit gelangt. Alfred Cortot hatte Recht, wenn er hier „die Würde, die keusche, schmerzliche Zurückhaltung antiker Grabmäler“ wiedererkannte. Durch seinen wiegenden Rhythmus erinnert das 12. Nocturne (1915) an eine Barkarole (Titel, den Fauré zunächst in Betracht gezogen hatte), jedoch eine ernste Barkarole, die ständig zwischen Moll und Dur schwankt und bis zum Erglühen qualvoll ist. Mit dem 13. Nocturne (1921) wirft der Komponist einen Blick zurück auf die gesamte Sammlung, um einen Archetypus der Nocturnes zu schreiben, u.zw. sowohl durch die expressive Tiefe seiner äußeren Teile als auch durch den mächtigen Sturm, den sie umschließen. Fauré hätte sich nicht besser vom Klavier solo verabschieden können als mit diesem definitiven Stück, das sich mit seinem klaren Aufbau und seiner einzigartigen Intensität zum Absoluten erhebt.

Nocturne (1902), das auch eines der Pièces brèves [kurzen Stücke] von Opus 84 ist, wurde erst auf die Bitte von Faurés Verleger Julien Hamelle hin in den Rang der Nocturnes aufgenommen. Daher kommt seine Kürze, die seinem Reiz keinen Abbruch tut, da seine ununterbrochene Phrase so große Zärtlichkeit enthält. Es handelt sich unter anderem um das letzte heitere Stück der Sammlung vor der spirituellen Erhebung, der Konzentration und den Molltonarten der letzten Stücke, in denen Fauré eine Moderne schafft, die nur ihm gehört.
