Berlin, 1918. Un musicien de dix-huit ans arrive dans la capitale impériale. Il est le fils du chantre de la communauté juive de Dessau. Il a étudié le piano et la composition avec un disciple de Pfitzner, Albert Bing. Il a déjà composé des lieder et donné ses premiers concerts. Sa première formation est achevée, il doit quitter Dessau pour poursuivre son chemin. Jusque-là, il a vécu dans un grand empire. À l’horizon de sa Saxe natale s’étendent deux autres empires, plus vastes encore, la Russie et l’Autriche. Demain, ce qui semblait immuable sera balayé.

Berlin, 1918. Kurt Weill arrive dans une ville ravagée par la Première Guerre mondiale. La famine y a fait rage et la révolution est en marche. Malgré les circonstances, Kurt Weill met à profit ces mois turbulents et apprend toujours, d’abord avec Humperdinck, l’auteur de Hänsel et Gretel, fervent disciple de Wagner, puis avec Ferruccio Busoni, qui lui ouvre encore d’autres portes, aussi bien techniques que poétiques. La décennie 1920 de Weill sera comme celle de Berlin, celle des années folles. Pendant la brève République de Weimar, Berlin va prendre un essor fabuleux et devenir la première ville industrielle d’Europe. C’est aussi une scène culturelle de premier ordre, aussi bien dans le domaine du cinéma (Fritz Lang, Murnau, Pabst) que des lettres (Brecht, Kästner – tous deux représentés ici), de la peinture (Grosz, Dix) ou de l’architecture (Gropius, fondateur du Bauhaus et déjà divorcé d’Alma Mahler). Tous ces artistes si divers peuvent être réunis sous la bannière de l’expressionnisme – pour reprendre un terme viennois, ils font à coup sûr sécession. Kurt Weill sera le musicien héraut de cette génération à l’appétit sans limite. Avec lui, Hindemith, Krenek et Eisler inventent la musique de ce nouveau monde.

écrites pour elle, elle qui décrivait sa voix « une octave en dessous de la laryngite ». L’autre rencontre historique sera bien sûr Bertolt Brecht, de deux ans son aîné. Celui-ci arrive à Berlin cette même année 1924 pour travailler avec Max Reinhardt, le grand homme du théâtre allemand, cofondateur du Festival de Salzbourg avec Strauss et Hofmannsthal. Mobilisé comme infirmier à la fin de la guerre, il en a vu tout jeune homme les pires horreurs. Weill et Brecht entrent en contact en 1927 et en moins de deux ans, créent la première version de Mahagonny et L’Opéra de quat’sous, qui remporte un succès immédiat et triomphal, tout comme Le Chevalier à la rose en 1911 et La Ville morte en 1920. Ici, l’art de Weill atteint son premier accomplissement : intense, violent, sarcastique, mais d’une vitalité folle – comme l’époque. Dans les mots de Brecht, Weill trouve le contraire de ce qui a fait le lyrisme de la langue allemande de Mozart à Strauss : en voici exaltées les consonnes, les raucités, la sécheresse.

Ses héroïnes sont des prostituées, maltraitées par leur maquereau, des femmes qui connaissent leur monde. Voilà Jenny ou Nanna, à la fois meurtries et fières, cyniques mais espérant toujours. En 1928, Brecht et Weill célébreront leur succès avec un chant jubilatoire mais peu prémonitoire, Berlin im Licht, Berlin ville-lumière. Elles ne vont pas tarder à s’éteindre.

L’apogée de ce succès coïncide avec sa liquidation : en 1931, L’Opéra de quat’sous est filmé pour le cinéma par Pabst, avec Lenya bien sûr. Simultanément, il tourne une version française avec Margo Lion et Albert Préjean. Dès les années 1920, Weill s’est fait connaître à Paris et sa musique y a trouvé un écho favorable. Cocteau est séduit, Milhaud enthousiaste. La sortie du film et le succès des concerts font de Paris la destination évidente lorsqu’il s’agit de quitter l’Allemagne à l’arrivée d’Hitler. En 1933, il crée Les Sept péchés capitaux au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées et l’année suivante Marie-Galante au Théâtre Hébertot. Avec un grand naturel, il rejoint la tradition des Yvette Guilbert (qui interprète 9

Il compose pour elle, avec le poète Maurice Magre, deux troublantes chansons, Complainte de la Seine et Je ne t’aime pas. Cependant, Weill comprend vite qu’il n’est pas plus à l’abri à Paris. Le succès faiblit et la presse conservatrice se déchaîne contre lui. Il faut donc aller encore plus loin et ce sera l’Amérique, où il débarque avec Lenya (ils sont divorcés à l’époque) en septembre 1935.

Broadway est le point de chute à la fois logique et paradoxal pour cet homme proche du communisme et dénonçant les hypocrisies de la société. Mais Weill se sent bien à New York et se revendique très vite Américain. Pour Broadway, il met du miel dans son (génial) vinaigre, du glamour dans sa rudesse, du lyrisme dans sa rage. Un premier hit en 1938, September Song, prépare le triomphe de Lady in the Dark en janvier 1941, pour lequel il collabore avec Ira Gershwin (George est mort en 1937), puis de One Touch of Venus en 1943, pour lequel il ne parvient pas à convaincre Marlene Dietrich. Suivront encore les magnifiques Street Scene et Lost in the Stars, avant que l’épuisement n’ait raison de lui. À la forme de divertissement du musical, Weill donne une densité nouvelle et un regard sans concession sur le monde, mais à présent sans agressivité.

En Amérique, Weill retrouve nombre d’artistes exilés comme lui. Tout Vienne est là. Zemlinsky, Alma Mahler et Korngold avaient été parmi les héros de la mythique Vienne 1900, et tous trois reliés par la figure essentielle de Gustav Mahler. D’abord soutenu par Brahms, Zemlinsky trouva en Mahler un grand avocat, créant son opéra Es war einmal à l’Opéra impérial en 1900. Zemlinsky était fou amoureux de son élève Alma Schindler, une des femmes les plus en vue de Vienne, et cette passion à sens unique fut le drame de sa vie. Douée pour la musique comme pour la peinture, elle composa de magnifiques lieder, tous empreints de lyrisme sensuel et crépusculaire. Sa production s’arrêtera net lorsqu’elle épousa Mahler en 1902.

père, grand ami de Mahler, avait d’ailleurs glissé Amadeus entre le prénom et le nom de son fils, comme un défi et une promesse. Et c’est Mahler qui avait confié à Zemlinsky le jeune génie. Avant la guerre, l’adolescent eut les honneurs de l’Opéra avec son ballet Der Schneemann, puis de l’orchestre philharmonique, qui crée sa Sinfonietta sous la direction de Weingartner. Tous trois ont perpétué au sommet la tradition viennoise du lied, le parant de flamboyantes couleurs Art nouveau. L’exil en Amérique leur réserva des sorts bien différents. Sans doute, il arriva trop tard pour Zemlinsky, le faisant mourir oublié, mais Korngold, comme Weill, put réussir une deuxième carrière, lui à Hollywood. Quant à Alma, trois fois glorieusement veuve (Mahler, Gropius et Werfel), elle resta jusqu’à sa mort l’icône qu’elle ne pouvait s’empêcher d’être.

Baptiste trotignon. Nous l’avons pensé comme un dialogue entre Est et Ouest, à l’image de ces compositeurs européens qui, à une époque très particulière, ont émigré vers les États-Unis. Kurt Weill en est la figure centrale, mais nous voulions aussi des pièces classiques. Nous avons réalisé, Kate et moi, un vrai travail d’archiviste, assez empirique, en lisant chacun de notre côté l’intégralité des chansons de Weill, pour la plupart extraites de ses opéras, cherchant ce qui était le plus intéressant vocalement, textuellement et musicalement. Je connaissais de lui quelques standards joués dans l’univers du jazz, mais peu ses opéras. Kate, elle, était plus à l’aise avec le répertoire lyrique.

Kate Lindsey. Je n’étais pas très familière de Kurt Weill – j’ai plutôt grandi avec Gershwin, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter… – mais à partir du moment où je me suis plongée dans son univers, j’ai été fascinée. Et ce cheminement nous a menés à Korngold, Zemlinsky et Alma Mahler : tous habitaient en Autriche ; Zemlinsky, qui a enseigné à Alma Mahler et à Korngold, était un grand admirateur de Weill. Ces compositeurs ont vécu des expériences parallèles et ont fini par émigrer aux États-Unis. Ce lien entre eux m’a plu.

Nous avions à cœur également de présenter de la musique écrite par Weill à toutes les périodes de sa vie. Lorsqu’il est parti aux États-Unis, il a tenté de s’intégrer dans la culture américaine, cela s’entend vraiment dans sa musique. En travaillant ensemble, nous avons remarqué l’évolution de sa musique 12

fasciné par la mixité des styles qu’il a découverts là-bas. Or, tous ces styles sont perméables entre eux, c’est ainsi que nous avons retrouvé une certaine liberté inhabituelle dans la musique classique.

Baptiste m’a vraiment appris cela.

Vous êtes allé, Baptiste, jusqu’à détourner certaines parties de piano ?

B. t. En lisant les œuvres de Weill, j’ai supposé que les partitions n’étaient pas toujours de la main du compositeur – et de ce fait peu intéressantes : les mélodies sont originales, mais les parties de piano sont parfois approximatives, elles ressemblent à des réductions d’orchestre ou à des arrangements d’éditeur. Je me suis permis de les réinterpréter à ma façon, jazzistique, aussi afin de les rendre plus vivantes. Les chansons de Weill sont souvent jouées de façon soit très jazz, soit un peu scolaire. Avec Kate, nous ne sommes ni dans l’un ni dans l’autre, nous proposons une approche différente et originale.

K. L. Nous avons vécu une aventure formidable à travailler ensemble, le projet a pris forme petit à petit, l’histoire s’est dégagée au cours de nos séances. Le résultat est là : nous offrons notre expérience, celle de notre rencontre autour de ces compositeurs, de notre maturation mutuelle dans l’acte de création, de notre prise de risque dans la façon d’interpréter cette musique. C’est une expérience à vivre d’un bout à l’autre de l’album.

Vous venez d’univers musicaux différents. Comment vous êtes-vous apprivoisés l’un l’autre ?

K. L. Lorsque Baptiste et moi travaillons ensemble, nous n’avons pas toujours besoin de nous parler.

Lorsque je l’entends se diriger vers quelque chose au cours de ses improvisations, je vais dans son sens et je change ma couleur, je chante de façon plus directe, peut-être plus fort. Et l’inverse est aussi

vers un son américain, le « son de Broadway » repérable dans le monde entier. Je pense que Weill était

menu vrai. C’est la beauté de la collaboration et de la performance. C’est pour cela que nous prenons autant de plaisir à être sur la route : parce que rien n’est jamais identique ni figé.

B. t. Nos façons de concevoir la musique sont différentes mais complémentaires : j’amène souvent des préoccupations rythmiques et Kate des préoccupations plus littéraires, ce qui est logique puisqu’elle chante un texte. Je me suis adapté peu à peu au rythme de la voix et Kate s’est adaptée au rythme du piano. Kate a une voix sublime mais qui n’est pas le timbre d’une chanteuse de jazz, et chercher des couleurs sonores au piano que je n’ai pas forcément l’habitude de chercher dans ce que je pratique le plus souvent représentait aussi pour moi un challenge passionnant.

Nous savions dès le départ que nous nous rencontrions sur des terrains qui n’étaient pas les nôtres, ce qui était très excitant : nous avons tenté de voir qui nous étions en dehors de ce que nous savions déjà faire, en repoussant un peu les limites, mais pas trop, pour garder une certaine homogénéité.

Berlin, 1918. A young eighteen-year-old musician arrives in the imperial capital – the son of the cantor of the Jewish community in Dessau. He had studied piano and composition with Albert Bing, a disciple of Hans Pfitzner. He had already composed some Lieder, and had given his first concerts. After this initial stage of his musical education he felt compelled to leave Dessau in order to further his career.

Up until then he had lived in a great empire, and beyond the horizon of his native Saxony extended two even vaster empires: Russia and Austria. Yet very soon this apparently unchangeable world would be swept away.

For the Berlin that Kurt Weill found on his arrival in 1918 was a city ravaged by the First World War, with famine raging and revolution under way. Despite these circumstances, Weill made the best of these months of political upheaval, ceaselessly studying, first with Humperdinck, the composer of Hänsel and Gretel, and a fervent Wagner disciple, then with Busoni, who opened up further perspectives, technical as well as aesthetic. For Weill, as for Berlin itself, these would be the Roaring Twenties. During the brief Weimar Republic, Berlin boomed, becoming the main industrial city of Europe. There was also a firstrate cultural scene: in the field of cinema (Fritz Lang, Murnau, Pabst); in literature (Brecht and Kästner – both represented on this CD); also in painting (George Grosz, Otto Dix), and in architecture (Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, and already divorced from Alma Mahler). All these quite diverse artists can be grouped together under the banner of expressionism – to use the Viennese term, they made a definite ‘Secession’ from the artistic mainstream. Kurt Weill became the musical herald of this 15

generation, with its limitless appetite for change. Weill, together with Hindemith, Krenek and Eisler, invented the music of this new world.

In 1924 Weill discovered the young Lotte Lenya: she became his chosen interpreter and lifetime companion, despite their quarrels, separations and infidelities. Most of his vocal works were written for Lenya, who described her own voice as ‘an octave below laryngitis’. The other historical encounter was with Bertolt Brecht, his senior by two years. Brecht arrived in Berlin in that same year of 1924 to work with Max Reinhardt, that great man of the German theatre who had co-founded the Salzburg Festival together with Strauss and Hofmannsthal. Mobilised as a medical orderly towards the end of the War, Brecht had seen appalling horrors as a very young man. Weill and Brecht met in 1927, and in less than two years had created the first version of Mahagonny and The Threepenny Opera, an immediate, triumphant success, as great as that of Der Rosenkavalier in 1911, or Die tote Stadt in 1920. This was Weill’s first great artistic achievement: music that was intense, violent, sarcastic, but with a crazy vitality – like the period. In the words of Brecht, Weill discovered the opposite of the German lyrical language from Mozart to Strauss: his emphasis was on hard consonants, vocal hoarseness, the dryly laconic. This heroines are prostitutes, brutally mistreated by their pimps, women who know their milieu well: women such as Jenny or Nanna, bruised yet proud, cynical yet always living in hope. In 1928 Brecht and Weill celebrated their success with Berlin im Licht (Berlin, City of Light), a jubilant if not very prophetically entitled hymn to a city that was soon to see its lights extinguished.

The height of Weill’s success coincided with the beginning of its decline. In 1931 The Threepenny Opera was filmed by Pabst, naturally with Lenya. Simultaneously, a French version was made, with Margo Lion and Albert Préjean. Weill had got to know Paris in the 1920s, and his music found a favourable echo there: Cocteau was beguiled, Milhaud enthusiastic. The film’s release, together with 16

Germany after Hitler’s rise to power. In 1933 his new work The Seven Deadly Sins was premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées; the following year Marie-Galante appeared at the Théâtre Hébertot.

As if born to it, he adopted the vocal tradition of Fréhel, Damia, and Yvette Guilbert (she took the role of Mrs Peachum in 1937); and in Lys Gauty he found an ideal interpreter, for whom, with the poet Maurice Magre, he wrote two edgy songs of melancholy; ‘Complainte de la Seine’, and ‘Je ne t’aime pas’.

Yet Weill soon realized that he was no longer safe in Paris. His success waned and the conservative press unleashed attacks on him. He realized that he would have to move even further away; and so in September 1935 he embarked for America with Lenya – they were actually divorced at the time.

Broadway was a logical – but also paradoxical – landing place for him, as a man close to communism and eager to denounce society’s hypocrisy. Yet Weill felt at ease in New York, and very quickly began to consider himself as an American. For Broadway he added honey to his vinegar, glamour to his rough edges, and lyricism to his fury. In 1938 his first hit, September Song, laid the groundwork for the triumph in January 1941 of Lady in the Dark, for which he collaborated with Ira Gershwin (George had died in 1937). Then came One Touch of Venus in 1943 – though he failed to persuade Marlene Dietrich to star in it. There followed two magnificent musicals: Street Scene and Lost in the Stars, before exhaustion got the better of him. To this form of theatrical entertainment, the musical, Weill gave a new intensity and a view of the world that was uncompromising, but still non-threatening.

In America Weill found a great number of artists in exile like himself. The whole of Vienna was there.

Zemlinsky, Alma Mahler and Korngold had been among the heroes of the legendary Vienna of 1900, all three linked by the all-important figure of Gustav Mahler. After enjoying the support of Brahms, Zemlinsky found a great advocate in Mahler, who staged the premiere of his opera Es war einmal at 17

Weill’s concert successes in Paris, made that city an obvious choice of destination when he had to leave

the Imperial Court Opera in Vienna in 1900. Zemlinsky was madly in love with his pupil Alma Schindler, one of the women most in the public eye in Vienna at the time: his unrequited passion was the drama of his life. Gifted as she was for music as well as painting, she composed some superb songs, all of them marked by a sensual, twilight lyricism. Her composing activity would be halted completely when she married Mahler in 1902.

As for Korngold, he was imperial Vienna’s last child prodigy, 150 years after Mozart. (Korngold’s father, a great friend of Mahler, had slipped the name ‘Amadeus’ between the boy’s first name and his surname, as both a challenge and a pledge.) Mahler himself had asked Zemlinsky to coach the young genius.

Before the War, Korngold, still only a boy, had been honoured by the Vienna Opera with a performance of his ballet Der Schneemann (The Snowman), and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra had given the first performance of his Sinfonietta conducted by Weingartner. All three of these great Viennese figures had continued the Viennese Lieder tradition then at its height, enriching it with flamboyant Art Nouveau colouring. Exile in America had different outcomes for each of the three. It certainly came too late for Zemlinsky, who died there in obscurity; but like Weill, Korngold was able to flourish in a second career, in his case in Hollywood. As for Alma, three times a celebrated widow (of Mahler, Gropius and Werfel), she remained, inescapably, an icon until her death.

How did you dream up this programme?

Baptiste trotignon: We imagined it as a dialogue between East and West, rather like those European composers who emigrated to the United States at a really significant period. Kurt Weill is the central figure, but we also wanted to have classical pieces as well. Kate and I did a lot of research of a fairly empirical kind: each of us separately went through the whole of Weill’s songs – they’re mainly taken from his operas – looking for the most interesting ones, vocally, textually, and musically. I already knew some of his well-known hits from the jazz world, but few of his operas, while Kate was more at home with the operatic repertoire.

Kate Lindsey: I wasn’t all that familiar with Kurt Weill – I’d grown up much more with Gershwin, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, and Cole Porter… – but from the moment I immersed myself in his world, I was fascinated. And that path led us to Korngold, Zemlinsky and Alma Mahler. All three of them came from Austria: Zemlinsky had taught Alma Mahler and Korngold, and greatly admired Weill.

These composers lived through parallel experiences, and ended up emigrating to the United States. I was attracted by that link that binds them together.

We were also keen to present music from all stages of Weill’s life. After he went to the States, he tried to integrate into American culture: you can really hear that in his music. As we worked together we noticed the way his music evolves into an American sound, the ‘Broadway sound’ that you can find 19

all over the world. I think Weill was fascinated by the mixture of styles that he encountered there in America. And since all those styles flow into each other quite freely, that’s how we managed to discover an unusual degree of freedom in the classical pieces. It’s Baptiste who really taught me how to do that.

Baptiste, I believe you even went as far as adapting some of the piano parts?

B.t. Looking at the works of Weill, it seemed to me the arrangements weren’t always by the composer himself – which made them less interesting: the melodies are the original ones, but the piano parts are often rather sketchy, like orchestral reductions or publishers’ arrangements. I allowed myself the freedom to reinterpret them in my own way, to jazz them up a bit, to make them sound more lively.

Weill’s songs are often played either very jazzily, or else in a rather academic way. Kate and I are neither for the one nor the other, we’re proposing a fresh new approach.

K.L. It’s been a tremendous adventure working together: the project took shape bit by bit, the whole idea worked itself out during our sessions. And now here’s the result: we’re offering our experience, our encounter with these composers, the way we helped each other to grow during the creative process, the risks we took with our interpretation of this music. It’s an experience relived in this album, from start to finish.

You come from different musical worlds. How did you manage to get used to each other?

K.L. When Baptiste and I are working together, we don’t always need to talk. When he’s improvising, and I can hear him working his way towards something, I go where he’s going, I change the colour of my voice, sing more directly, maybe more strongly. Or I can do the opposite. That’s the beauty of teamwork, of live performance. That’s why we so much enjoy being on the road: because nothing is the same, nothing is fixed.

menu Kate more with literary matters, which is logical as she’s singing a text. I’ve gradually adapted to vocal rhythms, while Kate has adapted to the rhythms of the piano. Kate has a gorgeous voice, but it’s not the timbre of a jazz singer, and it’s been an exciting challenge for me to seek out tonal colours at the piano that I haven’t necessarily been used to looking for in my more usual line of work.

We knew from the very start that each of us would be meeting the other on unknown territory, and that was very stimulating. We tried to find out who we really were, outside the respective areas we were each already familiar with: pushing our limits a little, but not too much, to maintain a certain degree of homogeneity.

Er ist Sohn eines Kantors der jüdischen Gemeinde von Dessau, hat Klavier und Komposition bei Albert Bing studiert, einem Schüler Pfitzners, bereits Lieder komponiert und seine ersten Konzerte gegeben. Seine erste Ausbildung ist abgeschlossen, er muss Dessau verlassen, um seinen Weg zu machen. Bis dahin hatte er in einem großen Reich gelebt. Am Horizont seines Geburtslandes Sachsen lagen zwei andere, noch größere Reiche: Russland und Österreich. Schon bald sollte das, was unveränderlich schien, weggefegt werden.

Berlin, 1918. Kurt Weill kommt in eine vom Ersten Weltkrieg gezeichnete Stadt. Hier herrscht Hungersnot, und die Revolution ist im Anmarsch. Trotz der Situation nutzt Kurt Weill diese turbulenten Monate aus und bildet sich weiter, u. zw. zunächst mit Humperdinck, dem Komponisten von Hänsel und Gretel, einem begeisterten Schüler Wagners, dann bei Ferruccio Busoni, der ihm noch weitere, sowohl technische als auch poetische Pforten öffnet. Das kommende Jahrzehnt ist für Weill wie für Berlin das der verrückten Zwanzigerjahre. Während der kurzen Dauer der Weimarer Republik erlebt Berlin einen unglaublichen Aufschwung und wird zur ersten Industriestadt Europas. Auch seine Kulturszene ist erstklassig, und das sowohl im Bereich des Films (Fritz Lang, Murnau, Pabst) als in dem der Literatur (Brecht, Kästner – die beide hier vertreten sind), dem der Malerei (Grosz, Dix) oder der Architektur (Gropius, Gründer des Bauhauses und bereits von Alma Mahler geschieden). Alle diese sehr unterschiedlichen Künstler können unter dem Banner des Expressionismus zusammengefasst werden 22

– um einen Wiener Ausdruck zu verwenden, kann man sagen, dass sie mit Sicherheit eine „Secession“ bilden. Kurt Weill war der musikalische Vorreiter dieser Generation von grenzenlosem Appetit. Mit ihm erfinden Hindemith, Krenek oder Eisler die Musik dieser neuen Welt.

Streitigkeiten, Trennungen und Seitensprüngen zum Trotz Lebensgefährtin wird und bleibt. Die meisten seiner Vokalwerke sind für sie geschrieben, die ihre eigene Stimme als „eine Oktave unter der Kehlkopfentzündung“ beschrieb. Die andere Begegnung, die Geschichte machte, war natürlich die mit dem zwei Jahre älteren Bertolt Brecht, der im selben Jahr 1924 nach Berlin kam, um mit Max Reinhardt zu arbeiten, dem großen deutschen Theatermacher, der mit Strauss und Hofmannsthal die Salzburger Festspiele gegründet hatte. Da er am Ende des Krieges als Krankenpfleger mobil gemacht worden war, hatte er als junger Mann die schlimmsten Gräuel mit ansehen müssen. Weill und Brecht kommen 1927 in Kontakt und schreiben in weniger als zwei Jahren die erste Fassung von Mahagonny und der Dreigroschenoper, die wie Der Rosenkavalier 1911 und Die tote Stadt 1920 sofort einen triumphalen Erfolg erringt. Hier erreicht Weills Kunst ihren ersten Höhepunkt: intensiv, stürmisch, sarkastisch und von mitreißender Vitalität – wie die damalige Zeit. In Brechts Texten findet Weill das Gegenteil von dem, was die Lyrik der deutschen Sprache von Mozart bis Strauss ausmachte: Bei Brecht werden die Konsonanten, das Raue, Trockene hervorgehoben. Seine Heldinnen sind Prostituierte, die von ihren Zuhältern schlecht behandelt werden, Frauen, die ihre Welt kennen. Ob Jenny oder Nanna, sie sind gleichzeitig verletzt, stolz und zynisch, doch immer noch voll Hoffnung. 1928 feiern Brecht und Weill ihren Erfolg mit einem Jubelgesang, der keinerlei Vorwarnung ist: Berlin im Licht. Doch bald sollten die Lichter verlöschen.

1924 lernt Weill die junge Lotte Lenya kennen, die seine Lieblingsinterpretin und manchen

Der Höhepunkt des Erfolgs fällt mit seiner Liquidierung zusammen: Im Jahre 1931 wird Die Dreigroschenoper von Pabst verfilmt – natürlich mit Lenya. Gleichzeitig dreht er eine französische Fassung mit Margo Lion und Albert Préjean. Ab den 20er Jahren wird Weill in Paris bekannt, wo man seine Musik positiv aufnimmt. Cocteau ist davon angetan, Milhaud begeistert. Aufgrund des Films sowie des Erfolgs der Konzerte ist Paris ein selbstverständliches Ziel, als Weill bei der Machtübernahme Hitlers Deutschland verlassen muss. 1933 werden seine Sieben Todsünden im Théâtre des ChampsElysées uraufgeführt und im darauffolgenden Jahr Marie Galante am Théâtre Hébertot. Er übernimmt wie selbstverständlich die Tradition von Yvette Guilbert (die 1937 Frau Peachum interpretiert), Fréhel und Damia und findet in Lys Gauty eine ideale Interpretin. Mit dem Dichter Maurice Magre schreibt er für sie zwei erstaunliche Chansons, Complainte de la Seine und Je ne t’aime pas. Doch Weill versteht schnell, dass er in Paris auch nicht sicher ist. Der Erfolg nimmt ab und die konservative Presse hetzt gegen ihn. Er muss also noch weiter ziehen und entschließt sich für Amerika, wo er im September 1935 mit Lenya (in dieser Zeit sind sie geschieden) ankommt.

Broadway ist für diesen Mann, der dem Kommunismus nahe steht und die Heucheleien der Gesellschaft anprangert, gleichzeitig ein paradoxer als auch ein logischer Zielpunkt. Doch Weill fühlt sich in New York wohl und bezeichnet sich sehr bald als Amerikaner. Für Broadway tritt er behutsamer auf, fügt seiner (genialen) Kritikfreude etwas Milde bei, seiner Rauheit Glamour und seiner Wut Lyrik. Ein erster Hit im Jahre 1938, September Song, bereitet den Triumph des Musicals Lady in the Dark im Januar 1941 vor, für das er mit Ira Gershwin zusammenarbeitet (George ist 1937 gestorben), dann von One Touch of Venus 1943, zu dem er Marlene Dietrich nicht gewinnen kann. Darauf folgen die herrlichen Werke Street Scene und Lost in the Stars, bevor ihn Erschöpfung überwältigt. Der unterhaltenden Form des Musicals verschafft Weill eine neue Prägnanz und einen kompromisslosen Blick auf die Welt – doch ohne Aggressivität.

In Amerika findet Weill viele Künstler wieder, die wie er im Exil leben. Ganz Wien ist dort. Zemlinsky,

Alma Schindler, eine der begehrtesten Frauen Wiens, unendlich verliebt, und diese nicht erwiderte Leidenschaft war das Drama seines Lebens. Sie war sowohl für Musik als auch für Malerei begabt, komponierte großartige Lieder, die alle von sinnlicher, düsterer Lyrik geprägt waren. Als sie Mahler 1902 heiratete, hörte sie abrupt zu schreiben auf.

Was Korngold betrifft, so war er 150 Jahre nach Mozart das letzte Wunderkind des kaiserlichen Wiens.

Sein Vater, ein enger Freund Mahlers, hatte übrigens wie eine Herausforderung und ein Versprechen zwischen den Vor- und den Nachnamen seines Sohnes Amadeus eingefügt. Und Mahler hatte das junge Genie Zemlinsky anvertraut. Vor dem Krieg wurde dem Heranwachsenden die Ehre zuteil, dass sein Ballett Der Schneemann an der Oper und danach seine Sinfonietta von den Philharmonikern unter der Leitung von Weingartner uraufgeführt wurden. Die drei Künstler setzten die Wiener Liedtradition an ihrem Höhepunkt fort und schmückten sie mit den leuchtenden Farben des Jugendstils. Das Exil in Amerika verlief für sie ziemlich unterschiedlich. Sicher kam es für Zemlinsky zu spät, so dass er bei seinem Tod in Vergessenheit geraten war, doch Korngold konnte wie Weill eine zweite Karriere beginnen, allerdings in Hollywood. Was Alma betraf, die ruhmreiche dreifache Witwe (Mahler, Gropius und Werfel), so blieb sie bis zu ihrem Tod eine Kultfigur, von der sie nicht loskam.

Alma Mahler und Korngold hatten zu den Helden des mythischen Wiens von 1900 gehört, und alle drei waren durch die bedeutende Persönlichkeit Gustav Mahlers miteinander verbunden. Zunächst von Brahms unterstützt, hatte Zemlinsky in Mahler einen großen Fürsprecher gefunden, der seine Oper Es war einmal im Jahre 1900 an der Kaiserlichen Oper aufführen ließ. Zemlinsky war in seine Schülerin

Nach welchen Gesichtspunkten haben Sie dieses Programm zusammengestellt?

Baptiste trotignon. Wir haben uns im Anklang an jene europäischen Komponisten, die in einer ganz besonderen Zeit in die Vereinigten Staaten auswanderten, einen Dialog zwischen Ost und West vorgestellt. Kurt Weill ist dabei die zentrale Figur, doch wollten wir auch klassische Stücke. Kate und ich führten eine richtige Archivarbeit durch, indem jeder ziemlich empirisch die gesamten Lieder Weills durchging, von denen die meisten aus seinen Opern stammen. Wir suchten die stimmlich, textlich und musikalisch interessantesten. Ich kannte von ihm Standards, die in der Welt des Jazz gespielt werden, doch seine Opern nur wenig. Kate war ihrerseits mit dem Opernrepertoire besser vertraut.

Kate Lindsey. Ich war mit Kurt Weill nicht sehr vertraut – ich bin eher mit Gershwin, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter usw. aufgewachsen –, doch kaum habe ich mich mit seiner Welt auseinandergesetzt, war ich fasziniert. Und diese Vorgehensweise führte uns zu Korngold, Zemlinsky und Alma Mahler, die alle drei in Österreich wohnten. Zemlinsky, der Alma Mahlers und Korngolds Lehrer war, bewunderte Weill sehr. Die genannten Komponisten machten analoge Erfahrungen und wanderten schließlich in die Vereinigten Staaten aus. Diese Zusammenhänge gefielen mir.

Es war uns auch daran gelegen, hier Musik aus allen Epochen von Weills Leben zu interpretieren.

Als er in die Vereinigten Staaten auswanderte, versuchte er, sich in die amerikanische Kultur zu integrieren, was in seiner Musik wirklich hörbar ist. Wir stellten bei ihm eine Entwicklung hin zu einem 26

amerikanischen Klang fest, den „Broadway“-Ton, der auf der ganzen Welt zu finden ist. Ich glaube, dass Weill von der Stilmischung, die er dort entdeckte, fasziniert war. Doch alle Stile sind untereinander permeabel, so dass wir eine gewisse, in der klassischen Musik ungewöhnliche Freiheit vorfanden. Das hat mir wirklich Baptiste beigebracht.

B.t. Die Auseinandersetzung mit Weills Werken brachte mich zu der Annahme, dass die Partituren nicht immer aus der Hand des Komponisten selbst stammten – und daher nicht sehr interessant sind: Die Melodien sind original, aber die Klavierstimmen sind manchmal ein wenig approximativ, wirken wie Klavierauszüge oder Bearbeitungen des Herausgebers. Ich habe mir erlaubt, sie auf meine Art neu zu interpretieren, also jazzig, auch um sie lebendiger zu gestalten. Weills Lieder werden oft entweder sehr jazzig gespielt oder sehr akademisch. Unsere Interpretation ist weder das eine noch das andere, unser Ansatz ist anders und originell.

K.L. Unsere Zusammenarbeit war ein wunderbares Abenteuer, das Projekt nahm nach und nach Gestalt an, die Geschichte kristallisierte sich im Laufe unserer Arbeit heraus. Das Ergebnis ist da: Wir teilen unsere Erfahrung mit, d.h. die unserer Begegnung rund um diese Komponisten, unser beidseitiger Reifungsprozess rund um den schöpferischen Akt, das von uns eingegangene Risiko bei der Art, diese Musik zu interpretieren. Diese Erfahrung ist das ganze Album hindurch ein Erlebnis.

Sie kommen aus verschiedenen musikalischen Welten. Wie haben Sie sich aufeinander eingestellt?

K.L. Wenn Baptiste und ich zusammenarbeiten, brauchen wir nicht immer zu sprechen. Wenn ich höre, dass er sich im Laufe seiner Improvisationen auf etwas zubewegt, so gehe auch ich in seinem Sinne vor, ändere meine Klangfarbe, singe direkter, vielleicht auch lauter. Und umgekehrt ist das auch so.

Baptiste, Sie sind so weit gegangen einige Klavierparts umzuarbeiten?

Darin liegt das Schöne an unserer Zusammenarbeit und Leistung. Daher macht es uns so sehr Spaß „unterwegs“ zu sein: Weil nichts je identisch und festgefroren ist.

B.t. Unsere Auffassungen von Musik sind verschieden, ergänzen sich aber: Ich steuere oft rhythmische Belange bei, während Kate sich eher um Literarisches kümmert, was logisch ist, das sie den Text singt. Ich passte mich nach und nach an den Rhythmus der Stimme an, und Kate passte sich an den Rhythmus des Klaviers an. Kate hat eine großartige Stimme, aber nicht das Timbre einer Jazzsängerin, und auf dem Klavier Klangfarben zu suchen, die für mich und das, was ich für gewöhnlich spiele, nicht unbedingt gängig sind, war auch für mich eine hochinteressante Herausforderung.

Wir wussten von vornherein, dass wir uns in Bereichen treffen würden, die nicht die unseren sind, und das war anregend: Wir versuchten zu erkennen, wer wir sind, wenn wir etwas tun, was wir nicht bereits können, und die Grenzen etwas, aber nicht zu sehr hinauszuschieben, um eine gewisse Homogenität beizubehalten.
