C’est dans les réserves de la Bibliothèque Royale de Bruxelles que se trouve l’unique exemplaire imprimé des 12 Fantaisies pour flûte seule de Telemann. Bien que la page de titre de ce volume indique, de façon visiblement erronée, « Fantasie per il Violino, senza Basso » et que le nom de Telemann ait seulement été ajouté à la plume sur la page de titre, leur attribution ne laisse pas de réel doute : tant la forme, le style musical, que le graphisme de la gravure sont typiques du travail de Telemann. Selon toute vraisemblance il s’agit bien des « 12 Fantaisies à Travers. [Flûte Traversière] sans Basse » répertoriées dans l’autobiographie de Telemann publiée par Johann Mattheson en 1740, ainsi que dans un Catalogue des Œuvres en Musique de Mr Telemann publié en 1733 à Amsterdam. Toutefois, la qualité de la gravure permettrait de situer leur composition dans la deuxième moitié des années 1720.

Ordonné par tonalités (les 12 plus naturelles à l’instrument), montant graduellement du ton de la à celui de sol, un tel cycle pour flûte seule est unique au répertoire. Cet objectif à la fois musical et didactique est dans l’air du temps avec par exemple Le Clavier bien tempéré (1722-1744) et les Inventions et Sinfonies (c. 1720) de J.S. Bach, ou L’Alphabet de la Musique (c. 1735) de J.C. Schickhardt.

La palette de couleurs particulièrement riche et raffinée qu’offrent les doigtés de la flûte baroque (un doigté par note enharmonique, sons « pleins » lumineux et sons de « fourche » sombres) exprime à merveille les affects particuliers des différentes tonalités.

Ayant chacune son propre climat, ces fantaisies sont des miniatures qui enchaînent trois ou quatre mouvements de même ton. Elles ont en commun la concision, la brièveté des formes et l’alternance rapide de leurs mouvements. Telemann joue sur les effets de contraste et de surprise par l’alternance de caractères et de tempi opposés. Le dernier mouvement est géné7 7

ralement léger et dansant. Les mouvements plus lyriques ou denses occupent la première ou la seconde position.

La forme ouverte de la fantaisie offre au compositeur un champ idéal de liberté et d’expression de son imagination inépuisable. Acteur fervent de la réunion des goûts allemand, italien, français et polonais, Telemann couvre tous les genres, les styles nationaux et les styles d’écriture de son temps. On y trouve ainsi une toccata et fugue empreinte de stylus fantasticus (Fantaisie 1), une sonata da chiesa (Fantaisie 2), des sonates en trois mouvements (Fantaisies 4 et 6) et en quatre mouvements (Fantaisie 9), une ouverture à la française (Fantaisie 7), des suites de danses (Fantaisies 8 et 10). De structure plus libre, les Fantaisies 5 et 12 alternent dans leur mouvement initial les tempi lents et rapides, à l’image de la Fantaisie 1. Les arpèges virtuoses qui introduisent la Fantaisie 11 ne sont pas sans rappeler certains préludes de Bach pour violon ou violoncelle seul.

Derrière les termes italiens qui désignent les différents mouvements se cachent de nombreuses danses. Certaines plutôt lentes et sérieuses : une allemande (Fantaisie 8, 1er mouvement), une courante italienne (Fantaisie 10, 1er mouvement) ; d’autres plus vives : deux menuets (Fantaisies 1, 2e mouvement et 10, 3e mouvement), une gavotte légère (Fantaisie 10, 2e mouvement), des bourrées (Fantaisies 2, 4e mouvement, 7, 2e mouvement, 9, 4e mouvement, 12, 4e mouvement), des polonaises (Fantaisies 4, 2e mouvement, 8, 3e mouvement), une gigue (Fantaisie 3, 2e mouvement), une gigue rapide ou canarie (Fantaisie 5, 3e mouvement).

L’écriture de Telemann joue sur les registres aigu, médium et grave, et parvient, avec un instrument monodique, à élaborer une harmonie, des dissonances, du contrepoint (le premier allegro du numéro 6 est une fugue stricte). Les sauts du grave à l’aigu quasi constants posent question à l’égard de l’ornementation. S’il est habituel à cette époque que l’interprète ajoute des ornements aux reprises, ici l’alternance quasi constante d’une basse et d’une note de dessus rend cet exercice plus délicat que dans une œuvre avec basse continue, où le soliste se concentre uniquement sur la mélodie de dessus.

En effet, le flûtiste joue simultanément plusieurs rôles : celui de mélodiste, et celui de joueur de basse, sans oublier le cas échéant les parties intermédiaires. Il est très jubilatoire de suivre par l’oreille le fil de chaque voix, et de sentir leur interaction ; varier leur expression, et obtenir une basse solide au service d’un chant libre, à l’image du claveciniste cultivant l’indépendance de ses deux mains et n’hésitant pas à légèrement les décaler dans le temps pour créer du relief.

Les techniques anciennes d’articulation, telles que décrites par J.J. Quantz dans l’Essai (1752) et le manuscrit des Solfeggi, permettent la souple « mobilité » de chaque note, au service de la lisibilité de la polyphonie. La pratique des notes inégales, abondamment mentionnée pour la musique de Telemann dans les Solfeggi, ajoute à la clarté du discours par la mise en relief des notes principales.1 Le silence, enfin, joue un rôle intéressant dans ces fantaisies. Le silence entre deux mouvements, mais surtout à l’intérieur d’un même mouvement. Il structure, crée une suspension, une rupture. Homme d’humour et d’esprit, Telemann aime ainsi prendre l’auditeur à contrepied.

L’effet théâtral de ces silences participe à l’illusion que la musique se crée en temps réel.

Et c’est une caractéristique de la Fantaisie issue du champ de la musique improvisée, que souligne J.J. Rousseau, dans son Dictionnaire de musique (1768) : « La fantaisie peut être une pièce très-réguliere, qui ne diffère des autres qu’en ce qu’on l’invente en l’exécutant, et qu’elle n’existe plus sitôt qu’elle est achevée. Ainsi le caprice est dans l’espèce et l’assortiment des idées, & la fantaisie dans leur promptitude à se présenter. Il suit de là qu’un caprice peut fort bien s’écrire, mais jamais une fantaisie ; car sitôt qu’elle est écrite ou répétée, ce n’est plus une fantaisie, c’est une pièce ordinaire.»

Voilà, pour l’interprète d’un si grand classique, une belle inspiration et une invitation… à la fantaisie !

THE FANTASIAS OF TELEMANN

BY FRANÇOIS LAZAREVITCH The reserve collections of the Bibliothèque Royale of Brussels hold the sole printed copy of Telemann’s Twelve Fantasias for solo flute. Although the title page of this volume indicates, quite obviously in error, ‘Fantasie per il Violino, senza Basso’, and Telemann’s name has been added only in pen on the same page, there can be no real doubt as to the attribution: the form, the musical style and the script of the engraving are all typical of the composer’s work. In all likelihood, then, we are dealing here with the ‘12 Fantaisies à Travers. [i.e. transverse flute] sans Basse’ listed in the autobiography of Telemann published by Johann Mattheson in 1740 and in a Catalogue des Œuvres en Musique de Mr Telemann published in Amsterdam in 1733. The quality of the engraving, however, tends to suggest a date of composition in the second half of the 1720s.

A cycle for solo flute of this kind, arranged by tonalities (the twelve that come most naturally to the instrument) and rising gradually from the key of A to that of G, is unique in the repertory.

Combined musical and didactic intentions were fashionable at the time, as with J. S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier (1722/1744) and Inventions and Sinfonias (c.1720) and Johann Christian Schickhardt’s L’Alphabet de la Musique (c.1735).

The particularly rich and refined palette of colours offered by the fingerings of the Baroque flute (one fingering for each enharmonic note, ‘full’ – bright – and ‘forked’ – dark – sounds) is marvellously suited to expressing the specific affects of the different keys.

These fantasias, each with its own mood, are miniatures consisting of a succession of three or four movements in the same key. All of them have in common the concision, the formal brevity and the rapid alternation of their movements. Telemann plays on effects of contrast and surprise by switching between opposing characters and tempi. The last movement is generally lightweight and dancelike. The denser or more lyrical movements occupy first or second position.

The open form of the fantasia offers the composer an ideal field of freedom and expression for his inexhaustible imagination. A fervent champion of the réunion des goûts (mixed style) embracing German, Italian, French and Polish tastes, Telemann covered all the genres, national styles and compositional idioms of his time. Thus we find here a toccata and fugue steeped in the stylus phantasticus (Fantasia 1), a sonata da chiesa (Fantasia 2), sonatas in three movements (Fantasias 4 and 6) or four (Fantasia 9), an ouverture à la française (Fantasia 7) and dance suites (Fantasias 8 and 10). Freer in structure, Fantasias 5 and 12 alternate slow and fast tempi in their opening movement, as does Fantasia 1. The virtuoso arpeggios that introduce Fantasia 11 to some extent recall certain preludes of Bach for unaccompanied violin or cello.

The Italian terms that designate the different movements conceal numerous dances. Some of them tend to the slow and serious – an allemande (Fantasia 8, first movement), an Italian corrente (Fantasia 10/i) – while others are more lively: two minuets (Fantasias 1/ii and 10/iii), a nimble gavotte (Fantasia 10/ii), bourrées (Fantasias 2/iv, 7/ii, 9/iv, 12/iv), polonaises (Fantaisies 4/ii, 8/iii), a gigue (Fantasia 3/ii), a fast gigue or canary (Fantasia 5/iii).

Telemann’s writing exploits the high, medium and low registers, and succeeds in making a melody instrument suggest harmony, dissonances and counterpoint (the first allegro of no.6 is a strict fugue). The well-nigh continuous leaps from bottom register to top raise the question of ornamentation. While it was customary at this period for the performer to add ornaments on the repeats, here the almost constant alternation between a bass and a treble note makes this exercise trickier than in a work with basso continuo, where the soloist concentrates solely on the melody in the treble.

This is because here the flautist plays several roles simultaneously, as melodist and performer of the bass line, not forgetting the inner parts where appropriate. It is an exhilarating experience to follow the thread of each voice with the ear and to sense the interaction of those voices; to vary their expression, and obtain a solid bass line supporting a flexible melody, just as harpsichordists cultivate the independence of their two hands and do not hesitate to place one slightly before the other in order to create relief.

Period techniques of articulation, as described by Johann Joachim Quantz in the flute method Versuch (1752) and the manuscript of his Solfeggi, allow one to make each note ‘mobile’ and supple, thus rendering the polyphony more legible. The practice of notes inégales, frequently mentioned in the Solfeggi with reference to the music of Telemann, adds to the clarity of discourse by bringing out the principal notes.1 Finally, silence plays an interesting role in these Fantasias: the silence between two movements, but above all within a single movement. It structures, creates a suspension, a rupture. A man of great wit and humour, Telemann likes to catch the listener off-guard in this way. The theatrical effect of such silences plays its part in the illusion that the music is being created in real time.

And this is a characteristic of the fantasia, which derives from the realm of improvised music, as Jean-Jacques Rousseau emphasises in his Dictionnaire de musique (1768): The fantasia may be a perfectly regular piece, which differs from the others only in the fact that it is invented in the course of performance, and no longer exists once it is finished.

Hence the caprice resides in the nature and arrangement of the ideas, and the fantasia in their promptitude in appearing. It follows from this that a caprice may very well be written down, but never a fantasia; for as soon as the latter is written or repeated, it is no longer a fantasia, but an ordinary piece.

Here is a splendid inspiration for the performer of such a great classic, and an invitation . . . to fantasy!

TELEMANNS FANTASIEN VON FRANÇOIS LAZAREVITCH Im Magazin der Königlichen Bibliothek von Brüssel befindet sich das einzige gedruckte Exemplar von Telemanns 12 Fantasien für Flöte solo. Obwohl das Titelblatt davon irrtümlich angibt „Fantasie per il Violino, senza Basso“ und Telemanns Name nur handschriftlich auf dem Titelblatt hinzugefügt wurde, besteht kein echter Zweifel an ihrer Zuordnung: Sowohl die Form als auch der musikalische Stil und die Gestaltung des Stiches sind typisch für Telemanns Arbeit.

Allem Anschein nach handelt es sich um die „12 Fantaisies à Travers. [Querflöte] sans Basse“, die in der 1740 von Johann Mattheson veröffentlichten Autobiographie Telemanns sowie in einem 1733 in Amsterdam erschienenen Catalogue des Œuvres en Musique de Mr Telemann verzeichnet sind. Der Qualität des Stiches nach kann die Komposition aber wahrscheinlich auf die zweite Hälfte der 1720er Jahre datiert werden.

Nach Tonarten geordnet (den 12 natürlichsten des Instruments) und stufenweise vom A bis zum G ansteigend, ist ein solcher Zyklus für Flöte solo im Repertoire etwas Einzigartiges. Das sowohl musikalische als auch lehrhafte Ziel lag damals in der Luft, wofür Das wohltemperierte Klavier (1722-1744) sowie die Inventionen und Sinfonien (um 1720) von J.S. Bach oder L’Alphabet de la musique (um 1735) von J.C. Schickhardt Beispiele sind.

Die besonders reiche und subtile Farbpalette, die die Fingersätze der Barockflöte bieten (ein Fingersatz pro enharmonischer Note, „volle“ helle Töne und dunkle „Gabeltöne“), drückt die besonderen Affekte der verschiedenen Tonarten wunderbar aus.

Da jede Fantasie ihre eigene Atmosphäre hat, sind diese Stücke Miniaturen, die 3 oder 4 Sätze in derselben Tonart aneinanderreihen. Gemeinsam ist ihnen die Knappheit, die Kürze der Formen und der schnelle Wechsel ihrer Sätze. Telemann spielt mit den Effekten der Kontraste und Überraschungen durch die Aufeinanderfolge entgegengesetzter Charaktere und Stimmungen14 14

Die offene Form der Fantasie bietet dem Komponisten ein ideales, freies Terrain, um seiner unerschöpflichen Fantasie Ausdruck zu verleihen. Als leidenschaftlicher Befürworter der Vereinigung des deutschen, italienischen, französischen und polnischen Geschmacks schreibt Telemann in allen Gattungen, nationalen Stilen und Kompositionsweisen seiner Zeit. So findet man hier eine Toccata und Fuge, die dem Stylus fantasticus entlehnt ist (Fantasie 1), eine Sonata da chiesa (Fantasie 2), dreisätzige Sonaten (Fantasien 4 und 6) und viersätzige (Fantasie 9), eine Ouvertüre à la française (Fantasie 7), Tanzsuiten (Fantasien 8 und 10). Die Fantasien 5 und 12 haben eine freiere Struktur und wechseln wie die Fantasie 1 in ihrem Anfangssatz zwischen langsamen und raschen Tempi ab. Die virtuosen Arpeggios, die die Fantasie 11 einleiten, erinnern an bestimmte Präludien für Violine oder Violoncello solo von Bach.

Hinter den italienischen Termini zur Bezeichnung der verschiedenen Sätze sind viele Tänze verborgen. Einige davon sind eher langsam und ernst: eine Allemande (Fantasie 8, 1. Satz), eine italienische Courante (Fantasie 10, 1. Satz); andere lebhafter: zwei Menuette (Fantasien 1, 2. Satz und 10, 3. Satz), eine leichte Gavotte (Fantasie 10, 2. Satz), Bourrées (Fantasien 2, 4.

Satz, 7, 2. Satz, 9, 4. Satz, 12, 4. Satz), Polonaisen (Fantasien 4, 2. Satz, 8, 3. Satz), eine Gigue (Fantasie 3, 2. Satz), eine rasche Gigue oder Canarie (Fantasie 5, 3. Satz).

Telemanns Komposition spielt mit hohen, mittleren und tiefen Tonlagen, wobei ihr mit einem monodischen Instrument Harmonien, Dissonanzen und ein Kontrapunkt (das erste Allegro der Nummer 6 ist eine strenge Fuge) gelingen. Die fast ständigen Sprünge von tiefen zu hohen Tonlagen stellen den Musiker vor die Frage der Verzierungen. Zwar ist es in dieser Zeit üblich, dass der Interpret bei den Reprisen Verzierungen hinzufügt, doch hier macht der ständige Wechsel einer Note im Bass mit einer in hoher Lage diese Praktik heikler als in einem Stück mit Basso continuo, indem sich der Solist nur auf die Melodie der Oberstimme konzentriert.

Hier aber spielt der Flötist mehrere Rollen gleichzeitig: die der Melodie- und die der Bassstimme, ohne gegebenenfalls die Mittelstimmen zu vergessen. Es ist wunderbar, dem Verlauf 15

Der letzte Satz ist im Allgemeinen leicht und tänzerisch. Die lyrischeren oder komplexeren Sätze nehmen den ersten oder zweiten Platz ein.

jeder Stimme zuzuhören und ihr Zusammenspiel zu fühlen, ihren Ausdruck zu variieren und einen soliden Bass im Dienst eines freien Gesanges hervorzubringen, wie es ein Cembalist tut, der die Unabhängigkeit seiner beiden Hände pflegt und vor leichten zeitlichen Verschiebungen nicht zurückschreckt, um die Musik plastisch zu gestalten.

Die alten Phrasierungstechniken, wie sie von J.J. Quantz in seinem Versuch (1752) und im Manuskript der Solfeggi beschrieben sind, erlauben eine geschmeidige „Mobilität“ jeder Note im Dienst der Deutlichkeit der Polyphonie. Die Methode der ungleichen Noten, die in Zusammenhang mit Telemanns Musik in den Solfeggi ausgiebig erwähnt wird, trägt durch die Hervorhebung der Hauptnoten zur Klarheit des Diskurses bei.1 Schließlich spielt auch die Stille eine interessante Rolle bei diesen Fantasien. Die Stille zwischen zwei Sätzen, aber vor allem innerhalb eines Satzes. Sie strukturiert, schafft eine Unterbrechung, einen Bruch. Als humorvoller, geistreicher Mann liebt es Telemann, den Zuhörer zu verwirren.

Der theatralische Effekt der Stille nimmt an der Illusion teil, dass die Musik in Echtzeit entsteht.

Und das ist ein Charakteristikum der Fantasie, die aus dem Bereich der improvisierten Musik kommt, was J.J. Rousseau in seinem Dictionnaire de musique (1768) betont: Die Fantasie kann ein sehr regelmäßiges Stück sein, das sich von den anderen nur insofern unterscheidet, als man sie während des Spiels erfindet und sie nicht mehr existiert, sobald sie beendet ist. Das Caprice wählt also die Ideen aus und stellt sie zusammen & die Fantasie präsentiert diese unmittelbar. Daraus folgt, dass ein Caprice sehr wohl aufgeschrieben werden kann, aber eine Fantasie nie; denn sobald sie aufgeschrieben oder wiederholt wird, ist sie keine Fantasie mehr, sondern ein gewöhnliches Stück.

Für den Interpreten einer so großen klassischen Form ist das eine schöne Inspirationsquelle, eine Aufforderung ... zur Fantasie!
