‘I remember I was sixteen when I heard Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra for the first time. It was broadcast by Polish Radio from the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall. Its marvellous lines and colours utterly gripped my attention. While listening I tried to analyse its superb orchestration, but in some passages I couldn’t figure out which instruments were playing. It sounded almost electronic! I was so amazed by it I couldn’t sleep. The next morning I skipped school and made a trip to the nearest city to buy the score. For a few weeks I always had it with me, poring over it day and night. I will never stop being fascinated by the beauty of this piece and of all Lutosławski’s music. I am very happy that my first recording with the NDR Orchestra is of music by one of the greatest Polish composers.’ Krzysztof Urban´ski

FROM THE LITTLE SUITE TO THE FOURTH SYMPHONY: A CONTINUOUS ITINERARY BY DIDIER VAN MOERE In 1949, a Polish Radio ensemble specialising in arrangements of folk music commissioned a work from Witold Lutosławski. This was no more, in his eyes, than ‘functional’ music, easy to write; he had already had experience of this, thanks notably to the Melodie Ludowe (Folk melodies) for piano of 1945. And he was perpetuating a tradition: from Chopin to Szymanowski, folklore had nourished Polish music. But the idea was above all, as with these composers, to renew a language, here through ‘a form of counterpoint that gives these simple diatonic melodies a completely different aspect’: though their tonal character is preserved, their accompaniment evades traditional harmony. The four movements of the Mała Suita (Little Suite) nonetheless retain a rustic vigour, beginning with Fujarka (Fife), in which the tunes assigned to piccolo and flute contrast with molto pesante chords. Hurra Polka also plays on the alternation between the sprightly melody on the oboe and a passage in martellato chords. The atmosphere becomes dreamier when the theme of Piosenka (Little song) is repeated with different colorations. The concluding Taniec (Dance) restores the joyful mood, with a more lyrical middle section. The suite is generally heard today in the version for orchestra, popularised by Grzegorz Fitelberg, who premiered it in Warsaw on 20 April 1951. The work immediately satisfied the authorities and the official critics, obsessed with hunting down ‘formalism’ and promoting ‘socialist realism’. Some commentators have seen in it a concession, indeed a declaration of allegiance. Nothing could be further from the truth: Lutosławski could hardly have been suspected of complaisance, and in this work he was quite simply seeking his own way. And showing how capable he was, despite the modesty of his aims here, of subtly exploiting timbral resources. 14
The Concerto for Orchestra reveals ambitions on a different scale. Yet, in 1950, Witold Rowicki had merely commissioned ‘something in the style of the Little Suite’ as a display piece for the orchestra he had just founded – the future Warsaw Philharmonic. To be sure, the Concerto continues the approach of the Suite with its borrowings from folklore and the way these are handled. But they are no more than ‘a material serving the construction of a large musical form’, in which Lutosławski, in the course of its three movements, revisits the Baroque tradition in his own way: ‘I had never before encountered this “marriage” of folklore and Baroque forms.’ The Intrada in arch form, for example, where, as in the Suite, lyrical passages are contrasted with sections in rugged rhythms, ‘recalls the concertos of Handel, Bach and the Italians’. The Capriccio notturno e Arioso, first light and volatile, with an atomisation of timbres that will always be a feature of Lutosławski’s subsequent works, then rough and brassy in a popular vein, is akin to a scherzo and trio. Like Brahms in his Fourth Symphony, he crowns the Concerto with a Passacaglia, anticipated by the Piosenka of the Little Suite: an eight-bar theme recurs eighteen times in different guises, moving from bottom register to top and pianissimo to fortissimo. After this, a flamboyant Toccata, derived from the theme of the Passacaglia, alternates with an archaising Corale in several voices, before a coda as brilliant as it is terse brings the Concerto to a conclusion. This third movement, which took Lutosławski two years to compose, lasts longer than the other two combined: he inaugurated here a bipartite form that was to become one of his trademarks, the first part serving as an introduction to the second, where the work’s dramatic weight is concentrated. After the premiere by its dedicatee Witold Rowicki in Warsaw on 26 November 1954, the Concerto for Orchestra, sometimes praised to the skies in the name of socialist realism, was soon taken up all over the world, becoming as popular as its namesake by Bartók, which it occasionally recalls without imitating it. Lutosławski, for his part, had mixed feelings about the work: ‘It wasn’t taking me in the direction I wanted to go.’
15
Three decades later, the Fourth Symphony marked the omega of his evolution – the subsequent Subito for violin and piano and Fanfare for Los Angeles Philharmonic are purely occasional works. This piece too was commissioned, in 1988, by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and the composer himself conducted the first performance in Los Angeles on 5 February 1993. But this is first and foremost a work that in just twenty minutes or so – it is the shortest of the four symphonies – sums up an entire evolution. Though Lutosławski had composed more radical scores than this, he did not abandon here what had made him an icon of modernity from the 1960s on: the concept he called ‘limited aleatorism’, allowing the musicians to play in freer tempo. Here, however, he employs it less than elsewhere, in order to give full rein to a certain lyricism that appears right from the start: the haunting theme on the clarinet against a background of strings doubled by harp creates a mysterious atmosphere. Twice interrupted by the wind, it expands only the third time in the course of a tutti. In similar fashion, a long cantabile will later take hold of the strings on three occasions – a ‘chorale’, inspired by Bach. Nevertheless, the recurrence of recognisable themes, the return to a certain type of emotion in no way signify a retrograde step. The symphony is built on the model of bipartite form that Lutosławski had made his own, even though the transition from one part to the other, after three abrupt chords separated by rests, is here difficult to locate, as are the transitions from one section to another: one has the impression of an uninterrupted musical flow. One might also think that passages where the sonority breaks up into intangible kaleidoscopes are ad libitum: the aleatory spirit persists here. And the chorale inaugurates a ‘new type of polyphony’ in which the voices are made up of different durations. Is the Symphony so very far from the Concerto? Is not the latter already a work of synthesis in which the composer, always in search of new means of expression, aspires to reconcile opposites? There is only one Lutosławski.
