Le nom de Beethoven est un nom consacré dans l’art. Ses Symphonies sont universellement reconnues aujourd’hui comme des chefs-d’œuvre. Elles ne sauraient être trop méditées, trop étudiées par tous ceux qui ont un désir sérieux de savoir ou de reproduire. Toutes les façons de les répandre et de les populariser ont en conséquence leur degré d’utilité, et les arrangements pour Piano, faits en assez grand nombre jusqu’ici de ces symphonies, ne sont pas dépourvus d’un certain avantage, bien que considérés intrinsèquement ils soient pour la plupart de médiocre valeur. La plus mauvaise lithographie, la traduction la plus incorrecte donne encore une idée vague du génie des Michel-Ange et des Shakespeare. Dans la plus incomplète réduction on retrouve de loin en loin les traces demi-effacées de l’inspiration des maîtres. Mais l’extension acquise par le Piano en ces derniers temps, par suite des progrès de l’exécution et des perfectionnements apportés dans le mécanisme, permettent de faire plus et mieux que ce qui a été fait jusqu’à cette heure. Par le développement indéfini de sa puissance harmonique, le Piano tend de plus en plus à s’assimiler toutes les compositions orchestrales. Dans l’espace de ses sept octaves, il peut produire, à peu d’exceptions près, tous les traits, toutes les combinaisons, toutes les figures de la composition la plus savante, et ne laisse à l’orchestre d’autres supériorités (immenses il est vrai) que celles de la diversité des timbres et des effets de masse. Tel a été mon but dans le travail que je publie aujourd’hui. J’eusse estimé, je l’avoue, comme un assez inutile emploi de mes heures la publication d’une vingtième variante des Symphonies dans la manière usitée jusqu’ici, mais je les regarderai comme bien remplies si j’ai réussi à transporter sur le Piano, non seulement les grandes lignes de la Composition de Beethoven, mais encore cette multitude de détails et d’accessoires qui concourent si puissamment à la perfection de l’ensemble. Je serai satisfait si j’ai accompli la tâche du graveur intelligent, du traducteur consciencieux qui saisissent l’esprit d’une œuvre avec la lettre, et contribuent ainsi à propager la connaissance des maîtres et les [sic] sentiment du beau.

TRANSCRIRE LE FINAL DE LA 9ÈME SYMPHONIE – PAR BRUNO MOYSAN

Ce très beau texte est la préface proposée par Liszt à l’édition de ses transcriptions des Symphonies de Beethoven en 1865 chez Breitkopf & Härtel. En terminant, en 1863-1864, sa transcription de l’ensemble des neuf Symphonies, Liszt renoue avec un projet ancien. C’est, en effet, beaucoup plus tôt, dès les années 1835-1837, que Liszt songe à transcrire pour piano les Symphonies de Beethoven, cela dans l’esprit de sa magistrale transcription de la Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz en 1833. En 1837, il effectue une première transcription de la Ve symphonie et de la Symphonie pastorale (Symphonie VI). Un an après, en 1838, il s’attaque à la VIIe symphonie. Ces trois symphonies sont publiées en 1840 et dédicacées à Ingres, souvenir des moments où Liszt, à Rome, en 1839, jouait les sonates de Beethoven pour violon et piano avec le grand peintre alors directeur de la Villa Médicis et connu aussi pour son violon. Autour de 1840, il se livre à un important travail de transcription d’autres œuvres de Beethoven : Adélaïde (1839-1841), les six Gellert-Lieder op. 48 (1840) et le Grand Septuor de L. van Beethoven op. 20. Un peu plus tard, en 1849, alors qu’il vient de s’installer à Weimar, Liszt transcrit encore un certain nombre de lieder, dont le fameux cycle An die ferne Geliebte op. 98. Ce n’est que beaucoup plus tard, près de 25 ans après ses transcriptions des Symphonies V, VI et VII, qu’il reprend, en 1863-1864, alors qu’il est à Rome, son travail laissé inachevé en 1841. Il transcrit les symphonies manquantes (I-II-IV-VIII-IX), reprend et achève la Symphonie héroïque (Symphonie III), dont il n’avait transcrit en 1841 et édité peu après que la « Marche funèbre », et révise entièrement, pour ne pas dire plus, les trois Symphonies transcrites en 1837-1838 (V, VI et VII, donc). Il dédie l’ensemble à son gendre, élève et disciple Hans von Bülow.

Si transcrire les symphonies de Beethoven pour piano représente un défi, transcrire la IXe représente un défi dans le défi. Certes, les trois premiers mouvements sont complexes, mais c’est bien évidemment le dernier mouvement qui est un pari contre l’impossible.

On se demande en effet comment il est possible de concentrer dans l’espace d’un simple piano et de seulement dix doigts, fussent-ils rompus à toutes les difficultés, un orchestre, et quel orchestre, augmenté d’un quatuor de solistes et d’un chœur. À la dilatation de l’écriture beethovénienne, propre à ce finale, correspond, chez Liszt, une démarche exactement antinomique qui est la réduction. Force est de reconnaître que Liszt, contre toute attente, réussit son pari non pas tant parce qu’on l’en aurait présumé incapable, mais bien plutôt parce que la somme des contraintes est telle qu’on se demande comment le défi peut être relevé. La première raison que l’on peut invoquer pour tenter d’expliquer cette réussite tient vraisemblablement à une question de format. Le format qui convient à la réduction de l’orchestre vers le piano est plutôt le piano à quatre mains ou le deux pianos, tout simplement parce que c’est ce format qui rend compte avec le plus de fidélité de la complexité de l’écriture de l’orchestre. Liszt lui-même a transcrit sa propre musique d’orchestre pour deux pianos ou piano à quatre mains. Avant de réduire la IXe Symphonie pour piano à deux mains, version enregistrée ici, Liszt a commencé par faire une transcription pour deux pianos éditée en 1851 chez Schott. Il est possible que Liszt, dans un premier temps, ait considéré la réduction du chef-d’œuvre de Beethoven pour piano seul comme un défi impossible à surmonter, la version pour deux pianos lui semblant à ce moment-là la seule envisageable. La version à deux pianos est intéressante, plus complète que la version pour piano seul. Contrairement à la version pour piano seul, Liszt n’a pas été conduit à des arbitrages cornéliens, conséquences de l’impossibilité de pouvoir tout transcrire tant le dispositif du piano à deux mains est en deçà de la richesse du texte beethovénien. D’une certaine manière, pourtant, malgré ses incontestables qualités, cette version à deux pianos perd en effet, au sens d’un effet théâtral, ce qu’elle gagne en exhaustivité. La tension entre la finitude et le dépassement, et qui en un certain sens est au cœur même du projet de la IXe Symphonie et plus spécifiquement de son 7

finale, trouve plutôt finalement son parfait accomplissement dans la version pour piano seul, malgré les infidélités à la littérarité du texte originel.

La deuxième raison qui fait de cette réduction pour piano seul une réussite tient à la nature même des arbitrages lisztiens. Si les trois premiers mouvements ne posent guère plus de difficultés que dans les autres symphonies, il n’en est pas de même du dernier mouvement.

Liszt, contrairement à la version pour deux pianos, est conduit à sacrifier, dans un certain nombre de cas, les parties de solistes et de chœur. Il sacrifie donc ce qui apparaît au premier abord comme essentiel. Peut-on imaginer ne serait-ce qu’un seul instant le finale de la IXe Symphonie sans « Ode à la joie », plus exactement sans le texte de Schiller, sans les quatre parties de solistes et sans les chœurs ? Et pourtant ! Il est probable que la réussite lisztienne et les arbitrages à l’origine de cette réussite nous mettent sur le chemin du fonctionnement profond de ce finale et soient le révélateur d’une part des priorités structurantes du discours beethovénien et d’autre part de son efficacité. Liszt, sur sa partition, prend soin d’écrire au-dessus de la partie de piano les parties de solistes et de chœur. Cela ne veut pas dire pour autant qu’elles sont supprimées du texte pianistique, ni que le texte pianistique n’est que la réduction de la partie orchestrale. En réalité, Liszt réduit bien pour piano l’orchestre, les quatre solistes et le chœur. Sa tâche est d’ailleurs facilitée par le fait que dans beaucoup de cas, les parties de solistes et de chœur sont en partie ou en totalité doublées par l’orchestre, tandis que la conduite générale des voix et la progression du schéma harmonique unifient bien évidemment, sous la forme d’un tout organique, l’ensemble orchestre, solistes et chœur. Il faut plutôt concevoir cet ajout des parties de solistes et de chœur au-dessus de la partie de piano comme une aide à la lecture et à l’interprétation.

En donnant plutôt la priorité à l’orchestre, Liszt a contrario se prive, et nous prive, d’une partie du spectaculaire choral beethovénien, largement compensé il est vrai par la virtuosité.

Liszt propose en réalité une véritable analyse qui dévoile la logique profonde du discours 8

beethovénien, c’est-à-dire la primauté accordée à la direction énergétique de la forme en relation avec l’écriture (contrepoint, conduite des voix). Il montre en même temps que les parties de solistes et de chœur ne font en définitive qu’amplifier et dilater cette énergie plus qu’elles n’en sont véritablement la source. On comprend mieux dès lors pourquoi il a été possible pour Liszt de concentrer la massivité et l’ampleur de ce finale dans les limites d’un simple piano à deux mains tendant de surcroît vers le monocolore. Ce qu’il fait par exemple au moment de l’allegro maestoso (mes. 595 et sq.) sur les paroles « Seid umschlungen, Millionen » est particulièrement spectaculaire. Les entrées décalées de l’ensemble trombones-violoncelles et contrebasses avec les ténors et les basses sur un sol à l’unisson sont impossibles à restituer au piano, de même que l’effet de puissance de la mélodie scandée à l’unisson par les ténors et les basses doublés par ces mêmes trombonesvioloncelles et contrebasses. L’épisode qui suit, moment où le chœur reprend ce même énoncé, accompagné cette fois par des figurations complexes à l’orchestre sur un rythme de dactyle (-uu), est encore plus vétilleux. Le choix énergétique et formel de Liszt trouve ici sa pleine mesure. Dans le premier cas, Liszt restitue l’ensemble trombones-violoncelles et contrebasses par un sol à la main droite octavié dans le medium grave et a l’idée, car c’est une idée, une trouvaille même, de faire entrer les basses à... la double octave grave, c’est-à-dire dans l’extrême grave du piano. Ainsi, l’effet de renforcement de l’énoncé produit par le décalage des entrées associé à l’unisson et à la puissance sonore est parfaitement préservé. Ensuite, Liszt supprime le chœur, pour ne garder que les figurations de l’orchestre, conscient du fait que c’est la répétition de la figuration dactylique, beaucoup plus que les longues tenues du chœur, malgré leur caractère imposant, qui est facteur d’énergie. L’allegro energico, sempre ben marcato à 6/4 (mes. 655 et sq.) final est prodigieux par la façon avec laquelle Liszt arrive à potentialiser la puissance rythmique du chœur en tirant parti de l’énergie virtuose des figurations de croches qui l’accompagnent.

The name of Beethoven is a hallowed one in the realm of art. His symphonies are universally acknowledged today as masterpieces. They cannot be meditated enough, studied enough by all those who have a serious desire for knowledge or wish to create. Consequently, all methods of disseminating and popularising them have their degree of usefulness, and the piano arrangements of these symphonies, of which a fairly large number has already been made, are not without a certain merit, even though, considered for their intrinsic worth, they are for the most part of mediocre quality. The poorest lithograph, the faultiest translation can still give a vague idea of the genius of the Michelangelos and the Shakespeares. In the most incomplete piano reduction, one may find here and there half-erased traces of the inspiration of the masters. But the recent progress made by the piano as a result of advances in execution and improvements to the action makes it possible to do more and better than has been achieved until now. Thanks to the untold development of its harmonic power, the piano tends increasingly to assimilate all the orchestral repertoire. In the compass of its seven octaves, it can produce, with only a few exceptions, all the characteristics, all the combinations, all the most learned compositional figures, and leaves the orchestra no other advantages than those (admittedly immense) of diversity of timbre and massed effects. Such has been my aim in the work I publish today. I confess I would have regarded it as a somewhat futile use of my time to publish a twentieth variant on the symphonies in the manner that has hitherto been practised, but I will consider that time well spent if I have succeeded in carrying over to the piano not only the general outlines of Beethoven’s compositions, but also the multitude of details and accessory features which contribute so powerfully to the perfection of the whole. I will be satisfied if I have accomplished the task of the intelligent engraver, the conscientious translator, who grasp the spirit of a work along with the letter, and thereby help to propagate knowledge of the masters and the appreciation of the beautiful.

A WAGER AGAINST THE IMPOSSIBLE:

TRANSCRIBING THE FINALE OF THE NINTH SYMPHONY – BY BRUNO MOYSAN

This fine text is the preface provided by Liszt as an introduction to the edition of his transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies published in 1865 by Breitkopf & Härtel. When he completed his transcription of all nine symphonies in 1863-64, Liszt was returning to an old project. For it was many years earlier, in 1835-37, that he had first thought of transcribing the Beethoven symphonies for piano, in the spirit of his masterly 1833 version of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. In 1837 he made an initial arrangement of the Fifth Symphony and the Pastoral (no.6). A year later, in 1838, he tackled the Seventh. These three symphonies were published in 1840 and dedicated to Ingres, in fond recollection of the days in Rome in 1839 when Liszt played the Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin with the great painter, at that time director of the Villa Medici, who was also known as an amateur violinist. In the years around 1840, he made a substantial number of transcriptions of other Beethoven works: Adelaide (1839-41), the six Gellert-Lieder op.48 (1840), and the Grand Septuor de L. van Beethoven (the Septet op.20). Some years later, in 1849, shortly after his move to Weimar, Liszt transcribed some more lieder, including the famous song cycle An die ferne Geliebte op.98. It was only much later again, nearly twenty-five years after his transcriptions of Symphonies nos.5-7 – when he was in Rome, in 1863-64 – that he resumed the task left unfinished in 1841. Now he transcribed the missing symphonies (nos.1, 2, 4, 8-9), took up again and completed the Eroica Symphony (no.3), of which he had previously transcribed and (shortly afterwards) published only the Marcia funebre, and thoroughly revised, to say the least, the three symphonies transcribed in 1837-38 (nos.5-7). He dedicated the set to his son-in-law, pupil and disciple Hans von Bülow.

If a piano transcription of the symphonies of Beethoven represents a challenge, a transcription of the Ninth represents a challenge within the challenge. To be sure, the three first movements are complex enough; but it is obviously the finale that is a wager against the impossible. For one wonders how it is possible to concentrate in the space of a single piano and only ten fingers, however well versed they may be in every difficulty, an orchestra – and what an orchestra!

– augmented by a quartet of soloists and a chorus. The expansion of Beethoven’s textures peculiar to this finale corresponds, in Liszt, to an exactly antinomic process, that of reduction.

One is forced to acknowledge, against all expectation, that Liszt wins his wager – not because one would have assumed him incapable of doing so, but rather because the sum total of the constraints is such that one asks oneself how the challenge could possibly be taken up at all.

The first reason one might invoke to try to explain his success probably has to do with the format. The format best suited to reducing an orchestral score for the keyboard is piano four hands or two pianos, quite simply because it is these forces that can most faithfully render the complexity of the orchestral writing. Liszt himself transcribed his own orchestral music for two pianos or piano four hands. Before reducing the Ninth Symphony for two hands, the version recorded here, he began by making a transcription for two pianos, published by Schott in 1851.

It is possible that Liszt initially regarded the reduction of the Beethoven’s masterpiece for solo piano as a challenge impossible to surmount, so that a version for two pianos then seemed to him the only conceivable option. The version for two pianos is interesting, more complete than the transcription for solo keyboard: there, unlike the latter version, Liszt was not faced with heartrending decisions resulting from the impossibility of transcribing everything, given that the potential of piano two hands falls so far short of the richness of the Beethovenian text.

Nevertheless, despite its undeniable virtues, in a way the version for two pianos loses in effect, in the sense of a theatrical effect, what it gains in exhaustiveness. The tension between finitude and straining the limits, which in a certain sense lies at the very heart of the project of the Ninth Symphony and more specifically of its finale, in the end finds its perfect accomplishment in the version for solo piano, despite its infidelities to the letter of the original text.

The second reason for the success of this reduction for solo piano has to do with the very nature of the choices Liszt has to make. If the first three movements scarcely pose more difficulties than in the other symphonies, the same is not true of the last movement. Unlike the version for two pianos, Liszt is obliged in a certain number of cases to sacrifice the solo and choral parts. He therefore sacrifices what at first sight appears essential. Can one imagine for a single moment the finale of the Ninth without the ‘Ode to Joy’, more exactly without Schiller’s text, without the four soloists and the chorus? And yet it is likely that Liszt’s success here and the choices that lie at its origin can set us on the path of understanding the underlying functioning of this finale and reveal both the structural priorities of the Beethovenian discourse and its effectiveness. Liszt takes care to mark the solo and choral parts above the piano part in his score. This does not means that the voice parts are omitted from the pianistic text, nor that this is merely the reduction of the orchestral part. In reality, Liszt does indeed reduce all the constituent parts for keyboard: the orchestra, the four soloists and the chorus. His task is facilitated by the fact that in many cases the solo and chorus lines are wholly or partly doubled by the orchestra, while the overall part-writing and the progression of the harmonic scheme obviously weld the total forces into an organic whole.

One should therefore regard the addition of the solo and chorus parts above the piano score as an aid to reading and interpretation.

By giving priority, in general, to the orchestra, Liszt a contrario deprives himself and us of part of the Beethovenian choral spectacular, though this is admittedly compensated by the element of virtuosity. In fact, Liszt presents a genuine analysis, which lays bare the profound logic of the Beethovenian discourse, that is, the primacy accorded to the energetic direction of the form in relation to the compositional technique (counterpoint, part-writing). At the same time, he demonstrates that in the end the solo and chorus parts merely amplify and expand that energy, rather than being its source. This makes it easier to understand why it was possible for Liszt to concentrate the massiveness and amplitude of the finale within the limits of a 13

single piano played by two hands, which moreover tends to the monochrome. A particularly telling example of what he does may be found at the moment of the Allegro maestoso (bars 595 ff.) on the words ‘Seid umschlungen, Millionen’. The staggered entries on a unison G of the ensemble of trombones, cellos and double basses followed by the tenors and basses are impossible to convey on the piano, as is the powerful effect of the melody sung in emphatic unison by the male voices doubled by the aforementioned instruments. The ensuing passage, when the full chorus restates the same text, now accompanied by complex figuration in the orchestra on a dactylic rhythm (-uu), is still more awkward to transcribe. Liszt’s energising formal approach is at its most resourceful here. In the first case, he reproduces the trombonecello-double bass ensemble with an octave G for the right hand in the lower medium and has the idea – for it is an idea, a brainwave even – of making the ‘choral’ basses enter at . . . the bottom octave, that is to say in the very lowest register of the piano. Hence the effect of reinforcement of the musical statement produced by the staggered entries combined with the unison and the sonic power is perfectly preserved. In the succeeding passage, Liszt omits the chorus lines and retains only the orchestral figuration, having realised that, much more than the long notes in the chorus (for all their imposing character), it is the repetition of the dactylic figures that is the factor of energy. The work’s concluding Allegro energico, sempre ben marcato in 6/4 (bars 655 ff.) is prodigious for the way Liszt manages to maximise the potential of the chorus’s rhythmic power by turning to account the virtuosic energy of the quaver figuration that accompanies it.

Der Name Beethoven ist heilig in der Kunst. Seine Symphonien werden heutzutage allgemein als Meisterwerke anerkannt; wer irgend den ernsten Wunsch hegt, sein Wissen zu erweitern oder selbst Neues zu schaffen, der kann diese Symphonien nie genug durchdenken und studieren. Deshalb hat jede Art und Weise, sie zu verbreiten und allgemeiner zugänglich zu machen, ein gewisses Verdienst, und den bisherigen, ziemlich zahlreichen Bearbeitungen ist ein verhältnismäßiger Nutzen durchaus nicht abzusprechen, obwohl sie bei tieferem Eindringen meistens nur von geringem Wert erscheinen. Der schlechteste Steindruck, die fehlerhafteste Übersetzung gibt doch immer noch ein, wenn auch unbestimmtes Bild von dem Genie eines Michelangelo, eines Shakespeare; in dem unvollständigsten Klavierauszuge erkennt man dennoch hin und wieder die, wenn auch halb verwischten Spuren von der Begeisterung des Meisters. Indessen, durch die Ausdehnung, welche das Pianoforte in der neuesten Zeit zufolge der Fortschritte in der technischen Fertigkeit und in der mechanischen Verbesserung gewonnen hat, wird es jetzt möglich, mehr und Besseres zu leisten, als bisher geleistet worden ist. Durch die unermessliche Entwickelung seiner harmonischen Gewalt sucht das Pianoforte sich immer mehr alle Orchesterkompositionen anzueignen. In dem Umfange seiner sieben Oktaven vermag es, mit wenigen Ausnahmen, alle Züge, alle Kombinationen, alle Gestaltungen der gründlichsten und tiefsten Tonschöpfung wiederzugeben, und lässt dem Orchester keine anderen Vorzüge, als die Verschiedenheit der Klangfarben und die massenhaften Effekte - Vorzüge freilich, die ungeheuer sind. In solcher Absicht habe ich die Arbeit, die ich der Welt jetzt übergebe, unternommen.

Ich gestehe, dass ich es für eine ziemlich unnütze Verwendung meiner Zeit ansehen müsste, wenn ich weiter nichts getan hätte, als die vielen bisherigen Ausgaben der Symphonien mit einer neuen, in gewohnter Weise bearbeiteten zu vermehren; aber ich halte meine Zeit für gut angewendet, wenn es mir gelungen ist. nicht bloß die großen Umrisse der Beethovenschen Komposition, sondern auch alle jenen Feinheiten und kleineren Züge auf das Pianoforte zu übertragen, welche so bedeutend zur Vollendung des Ganzen mitwirken. Mein Ziel ist erreicht, wenn ich es dem 16

verständigen Kupferstecher, dem gewissenhaften Übersetzer gleichgetan habe, welche den Geist eines Werkes auffassen und so zur Erkenntnis der großen Meister und zur Bildung des Sinnes für das Schöne beitragen.

Bei voranstehendem Text handelt es sich um Franz Liszts wunderschönes Vorwort zur ersten Auflage seiner 1865 bei Breitkopf & Härtel erschienen Transkriptionen der BeethovenSinfonien. Mit der Fertigstellung 1863-1864 seiner Transkriptionen aller neun Sinfonien nahm Liszt ein altes Vorhaben erneut in Angriff. In der Tat hatte Liszt schon viel früher, nämlich ab 1835-37, erwogen, die Beethoven-Sinfonien für das Klavier zu bearbeiten, und zwar im Sinne seiner meisterlichen Transkription der „Symphonie fantastique“ von Berlioz aus dem Jahr 1833. 1837 entstand eine erste Transkription der 5. Sinfonie sowie der „Pastorale“ (Sinfonie Nr. 6). Ein Jahr später, 1838, begann Liszt mit der Bearbeitung der 7. Sinfonie.

Diese drei Sinfonien wurden 1840 veröffentlicht und waren Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres gewidmet, zur Erinnerung an die Zeit, als Liszt 1839 die Beethoven-Sonaten für Klavier und Violine gemeinsam mit dem berühmten Maler in Rom spielte; dieser war damals Leiter 17

der „Académie de France à Rome“ (Villa Medici) und auch bekannt für sein exzellentes Geigenspiel. Um 1840 unternahm Liszt umfangreiche Transkriptionen anderer BeethovenWerke: Es entstanden „Adélaïde de Beethoven“ (1839/1841), „Beethovens geistliche Lieder von Gellert“ op. 48 (1840) sowie das „Grand Septuor de L. van Beethoven“ op. 20 (1841). Ein wenig später, 1849, nachdem sich Liszt in Weimar niedergelassen hatte, übertrug er noch einige Lieder, darunter den bekannten Zyklus „An die ferne Geliebte“ op. 98. Erst viel später, etwa fünfundzwanzig Jahre nach seinen Transkriptionen der Sinfonien Nr. 5, 6 und 7, nahm er 1863-1864 in Rom seine 1841 unvollendet gebliebene Arbeit wieder auf. Er übertrug dann die fehlenden Sinfonien (Nr. 1-2-4-8-9) und vollendete die Sinfonie Nr. 3 „Eroica“, von der er 1841 nur den Trauermarsch bearbeitet und kurz danach veröffentlicht hatte; er revidierte, um es einmal vorsichtig auszudrücken, die drei 1837-1838 transkribierten Sinfonien (Nr. 5-6-7) komplett. Liszt widmete das Ganze seinem Schwiegersohn und Schüler Hans von Bülow.

Wenn die Transkription der Beethoven-Sinfonien für Klavier schon eine Herausforderung an sich darstellt, so gilt dies erst recht und in extrem verstärktem Maße für die Sinfonie Nr. 9.

Gewiss sind schon die drei ersten Sätze komplex, aber eigentlich ist die Transkription des Schlusssatzes ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit. Man fragt sich in der Tat, wie es möglich ist, einen Orchesterpart (und was für ein Orchester!) auf ein einfaches Klavier und nur zehn Finger, so geübt diese auch sein mögen, zu begrenzen, und welcher noch dazu um ein SolistenQuartett und einen Chor bereichert ist. Dem Ausufernden des beethovenschen Tonsatzes in diesem Finale entspricht bei Liszt ein genau antinomisches Vorgehen, denn er setzt im Gegenteil auf Reduzierung. Man muss anerkennen, dass Liszt diese Herausforderung gegen jede Erwartung nicht etwa deshalb meistert, weil man ihn eigentlich einer solchen Sache für unfähig gehalten hätte, sondern eher, weil der damit verbundenen Zwänge hier so viele sind, dass man sich fragt, wie diese Aufgabe überhaupt angegangen werden kann. Der erste Grund für diesen Erfolg liegt wahrscheinlich in dem Format. Das zur Reduzierung des Orchesters auf den Klavierpart passende Format ist eher ein Klavierauszug zu vier Händen oder für 18

zwei Klaviere, ganz einfach, weil dieses Format die größtmögliche Notentreue hinsichtlich der Komplexität des Orchestertonsatzes bietet. Liszt selbst hat seine eigene Orchestermusik für zwei Klaviere oder Klavier zu vier Händen übertragen. Bevor er die 9. Sinfonie für Klavier zu zwei Händen übertrug - die hier eingespielte Fassung -, begann Liszt mit einer Transkription für zwei Klaviere, welche 1851 bei Schott veröffentlicht wurde. Es ist möglich, dass Liszt die Bearbeitung für Soloklavier von Beethovens Meisterwerk zunächst als eine unmöglich zu überwindende Herausforderung ansah, und dass die Fassung für zwei Klaviere ihm zu diesem Zeitpunkt als die einzig denkbare erschien. Diese ist insofern interessant, da sie vollständiger ist als die Fassung für Soloklavier. Anders als bei dem Klavierauszug für Soloklavier war Liszt hier nicht qualvollen Gewissensentscheidungen ausgesetzt, als Folge der Unmöglichkeit, alles transkribieren zu können, angesichts der der Fülle der Komposition Beethovens weit unterlegenen technischen Voraussetzungen des Klaviers zu zwei Händen. In gewisser Weise, und trotz ihrer unumstrittenen Qualitäten, verliert diese Fassung für zwei Klaviere an Wirkung, im Sinne eines theatralischen Effektes, was sie hingegen an Ausführlichkeit hinzugewinnt.

Die in gewissem Sinne gerade im Mittelpunkt des Projekts der 9. Sinfonie und spezifischer des Finales stehende Spannung zwischen der Begrenztheit und ihrer Überschreitung findet schließlich ihre vollkommene Ausgestaltung eher in der Fassung für Soloklavier, trotz der an dem ursprünglichen Notentext erfolgten Abstriche.

Der zweite Grund für den Erfolg dieser Bearbeitung für Klavier solo liegt gerade in der Natur von Liszts musikalischen Entscheidungen. Wenn auch die drei ersten Sätze kaum mehr Schwierigkeiten als in den anderen Sinfonien bereiten, so gilt dies hingegen nicht für den letzten Satz. Im Gegensatz zur Fassung für zwei Klaviere kann Liszt nicht anders, als in einigen Fällen die Solo- und Chorpartien zu opfern. Er gibt also das auf, was auf den ersten Blick als wesentlich erscheint. Kann man sich auch nur für einen Moment das Finale der 9. Sinfonie ohne die „Ode an die Freude“ vorstellen, genauer ohne Schillers Text, ohne die Partien der vier Solisten und ohne den Chor? Und doch! Man kann annehmen, dass Liszts Erfolg sowie 19

die diesem zugrunde liegenden Entscheidungen einem den Weg zu dem weisen, was dieses Finale im tiefsten Innern ausmacht, und dass sie die Struktur verleihenden Prioritäten von Beethovens Klangrede einerseits und ihre Effizienz andererseits verdeutlichen. Liszt notierte jeweils sorgsam über dem Klavierpart die Solo- und Chorstimmen. Das bedeutet aber nicht, dass sie geradewegs aus dem pianistischen Notentext gestrichen werden noch dass dieser nur den Auszug des Orchesterparts darstellt. In Wirklichkeit bearbeitete Liszt sehr wohl die jeweiligen Stimmen des Orchesters, der vier Solisten sowie des Chores für Klavier. Seine Aufgabe wurde im Übrigen durch die Tatsache erleichtert, dass in vielen Fällen die Partien der Solisten sowie der Chor zum Teil oder auch in Gänze durch das Orchester gedoppelt werden, während die allgemeine Stimmführung und die Entwicklung des Harmonieschemas Solisten, Chor und Orchester ganz selbstverständlich in Form eines organischen Ganzen vereinen.

Man muss die Hinzufügung der Solo- und Chorstimmen über der Klavierstimme eher als Hilfestellung beim Lesen der Noten und bei der Interpretation sehen.

Indem Liszt dem Orchester den Vorrang einräumt, beraubt er sich hingegen, und somit auch den Hörer, eines Teiles von Beethovens spektakulärer Chorpartie; dieses „Manko“ wird allerdings weitgehend kompensiert durch den virtuosen Charakter des Stückes. Liszt bietet in Wirklichkeit eine echte Analyse an, welche die Beethovens Klangrede zugrundeliegende Logik enthüllt, das heißt den Primat der energetischen Zielrichtung der Form in Verbindung mit dem Tonsatz (Kontrapunkt, Stimmführung). Er zeigt zur gleichen Zeit, dass die Solopartien, und ebenso der Chor, letztlich nur zu einer Aufblähung und Auszehrung der Energie beitragen, statt eine echte Quelle dafür darzustellen. Man begreift folglich besser, weswegen es Liszt möglich war, die schiere Masse und das Ausmaß dieses Finales in die Grenzen eines einfachen Klavierauszugs für zwei Hände zu konzentrieren, zumal bei dem Instrument eine Tendenz zur Monotonie in der Klangfarbe besteht. Das, was er beispielsweise beim Andante maestoso macht (Takt 595 ff.), auf die Worte „Seid umschlungen, Millionen“, ist besonders spektakulär. mit den Tenören und Bässen auf einem G im Unisono kann man unmöglich am Klavier wiedergeben, ebenso wenig wie die mächtige Wirkung der Melodie, die unisono von den Tenören und Bässen skandiert wird, welche durch eben diese Posaunen und Streicherbässe gedoppelt werden. Die folgende Episode, in der der Chor dieselbe Aussage wieder aufnimmt, dieses Mal begleitet durch komplexe Orchesterfigurationen auf einem Daktylusrhythmus (-uu), ist sogar noch heikler. Die Energie- und Formwahl Liszts findet hier ihr rechtes Maß.

Im ersten Fall gibt Liszt in der rechten Hand die Posaunen und Streicherbässe durch ein g in der kleinen Oktave sowie ein G in der großen Oktave in der mittleren Basslage wieder und hat den Einfall, denn es ist ein Einfall, ja sogar eine glänzende Idee, die Bassstimmen des Chores zwei Oktaven tiefer in der Subkontraoktave hinzutreten zu lassen, das heißt in der äußersten Basslage des Klaviers. Somit wird der Verstärkungseffekt der musikalischen Aussage, welcher durch die Verschiebung der Einsätze hervorgerufen wird, zusammen mit dem Unisono und der Lautstärke, vollkommen bewahrt. Danach lässt Liszt den Chor beiseite und behält nur die Figurationen des Orchesters bei, im Bewusstsein, dass die Wiederholung der daktylischen Figuration, viel mehr noch als die lang gehaltenen Noten des Chors trotz deren imponierenden Charakters, hier den Energiefaktor bildet. Die Art und Weise, mit der es Liszt gelingt, die rhythmische Kraft des Chors zu potenzieren, indem er die virtuose Energie der diesen begleitenden Achtelfigurationen nutzt, verleiht dem finalen Allegro energico, sempre ben marcato im 6/4-Takt (Takt 655 ff.) seinen grandios-überwältigenden Charakter.

Because I love Blüthner and their early concert-size pianos are very rare, we took the challenge of beginning the restoration. Once you’ve spent 300 hours, you don’t want to stop and the whole restoration ended up taking us much more than 1000 hours . . . The great and famous piano builders, Bechstein, Steinway and Blüthner all started business in 1853, Franz Liszt became familiar with all of them in later life. His favourite student Alexander Siloti played his first concert in the Blüthner Hall. Today Blüthner still exists and is still in the hands of the descendants of its founder Julius Blüthner.

L’instrument, en fort mauvais état lorsque nous l’avons trouvé, a été restauré par nos soins en 2012-2013.

Parce que j’aime particulièrement les pianos Blüthner et que leurs premiers instruments de concert sont aujourd’hui très rares, nous avons relevé le défi d’entreprendre la restauration. Au bout de trois cents heures de travail, il n’était plus question de s’arrêter en si bon chemin : il nous a donc fallu plus d’un millier d’heures pour mener notre tâche à son terme. Les grands facteurs de pianos, Bechstein, Steinway et Blüthner, ont tous fondé leur propre entreprise en 1853. Franz Liszt, dans ses dernières années, les a beaucoup fréquentés et Alexander Siloti, son élève favori, a donné son premier concert au Blüthner Hall. Blüthner existe encore aujourd’hui et la firme appartient toujours aux descendants de son fondateur, Julius Blüthner.

Das Instrument befand sich in sehr schlechtem Zustand, als es erworben wurde und wurde 2012/13 von uns restauriert. Da mir Blüthner-Flügel besonders gefallen und Konzert instrumente der Leipziger Firma heute selten sind, haben wir die Herausforderung einer Restau rie rung auf uns genommen. Nach 300 Arbeitsstunden zeichnete sich ab, dass es möglich war. Es bedurfte noch über 1000 Stunden, um die Arbeit zu vollenden. Die großen Klavierbauer Bechstein, Steinway und Blüthner haben ihre Unternehmen alle 1853 gegründet. Der späte Liszt war oft bei ihnen zu Gast und sein Lieblingsschüler Alexander Siloti gab sein Debüt in der Blüthner Hall.
