SCHUBERTIADE

Anyone who evokes Schubert also evokes Vienna in the early nineteenth century: tinsel and Sehnsucht, cotillions and coffee houses! The bourgeoisie relished the verses of Goethe, Schiller and Schlegel and consumed musical entertainment more voraciously than ever before. To satisfy that hunger, the Viennese middle class regularly gathered at informal evenings featuring lectures and debates, games and drama, poetry, and political and social discussions. Music, however, invariably played the leading role, with a repertory of songs and social dances – it was by no means rare for these meetings to culminate in parties that went on beyond dawn . . . Franz Schubert also visited such salons, and as a result was often asked for new songs and chamber music. By the cellist Paumgartner, for example, whose request for a quintet to play at a house concert in Steyr made musical history: the outcome was the famous ‘Trout’ Quintet. The meetings Schubert and his circle of friends organised for themselves had a modest, jovial character. These ‘Schubertiads’ soon enjoyed a special reputation, and their bohemian atmosphere and artistic and intellectual companionship attracted even noble guests. Today ‘Schubertiads’ have acquired a legendary status. Central to the mythical image are Schubert – who often sang himself (‘in a weak but pleasant voice’) and improvised at the piano – and his œuvre; many of his songs and dances (around 400 works in total) may be directly traced back to this context. They testify to an internalised, individualised, intimate musical experience that had found its ultimate habitat in the Schubertian salons.

10

With this recording I wanted to organise an imaginary Schubert salon four times over – hence these are not historical reconstructions, if only because we know little about the programmes of the ‘Schubertiads’. From that basic idea and with the Deutsch catalogue as my source, I started puzzling over possible musical scenarios. In doing so, I was guided by several criteria. ‘Varietas’, above all: I aimed for the greatest possible diversity of forces, moods and keys, and tried to ensure all the musicians were heard on each of the four discs. Of course there were practical considerations, such as the number of works and the length of each piece within the ‘dimensions’ of this box. But this ‘Schubertiade’ is first and foremost a personal story; I already had in mind the musicians that I wanted to work with when choosing the programme, and often there was no other motive than my admiration and love for a given composition. Finally, there were some works that must on no account be missing – ‘Schubertiade’ is a tribute to the man who created all of this in the first place: Der Wanderer, the embodiment of Schubertian genius; the ‘Trout’ Quintet, which symbolises his chamber music output; and An die Musik, a touchingly beautiful eulogy to which I can wholeheartedly subscribe. Music for solo piano is absent from this set: that repertory has often been recorded before, and was almost certainly not played at ‘Schubertiads’. On the other hand, I enthusiastically made room for Schubert’s rarely performed output for piano four hands. For Claire and myself, however, this was not self-evident: we usually sit each behind our own set of keys, and a dialogue emerges from our parts. Here each of us plays one half of a whole, there is only one person who can operate the pedal, changes of harmony must be perfectly coordinated, and the dynamics of our interplay is completely different. Nor did I want to miss the opportunity to present some so-called ‘choral’ works – actually intended for vocal quartet: these are hardly ever performed with small forces, but almost certainly figured on the programme of Schubert’s salons. * O gracious art, I thank you 11

DU HOLDE KUNST, ICH DANKE DIR*

Some retrospective observations: a great deal of ‘night music’ has sneaked into this selection – hardly surprising, really, because Schubert was fond of composing at night. Curiously enough, I also realised that tenor songs are missing, whereas Schubert (himself a tenor) composed most of his songs for that voice type! In his experience as a singer, in my opinion, lies one of Schubert’s secrets as a composer of Lieder: his training as a choirboy at the Konvikt in Vienna crystallised in a style of writing that is ideally tailored for the human voice. In addition, the dramaturgical structure of his songs is phenomenal. The piano acts like a stage director: it sets the mood and anticipates the setting of the text – an age-old theatrical principle that Schubert handled brilliantly. A hearing of Der Zwerg with the words of the song in hand illustrates the point with brio! That dramatic power is just one of the Schubertian qualities that so fascinate me. I also find his music very ‘pure’, to the point. Schubert never paid any attention to what others thought: he went his own way, with an original body of work as the result. His compositional trajectory, too, seems to me to be exceptional: he wrote Erlkönig before he was twenty, and at the end of his life he started studying counterpoint! Finally, some of Schubert’s quotes are close to my heart. One of the most beautiful makes the perfect peroration to this note: O Imagination! Thou greatest treasure of humanity, thou inexhaustible source from which both artists and scholars drink! Oh stay with us still, though recognised and venerated by only a few, to preserve us from that so-called enlightenment, that hideous skeleton devoid of flesh and blood! Jos van Immerseel 12

MARTIN MÜRNER, NATURAL HORN | NACHTGESANG IM WALDE For this recording I selected a natural horn that I built, a replica of an unsigned original BohemianAustrian instrument, complete with all the crooks, mouthpiece and wooden case, that I own myself. My colleague Anneke Scott played the original as first horn on the recording. In my opinion, the tone colours of this instrument are extremely well suited to the Romantic atmosphere that Schubert creates with the text and the music. I also find that the timbre of horns blends very well with male voices. STEFANO VEGGETTI, VIOLONCELLO PICCOLO & CELLO | SONATE (ARPEGGIONE) Stefano Veggetti’s cello by Nicola Gagliano was kindly provided by Baroness Mariuccia Zerilli-Marimò.

The ‘arpeggione’, for which this composition was intended, remains a bit of a mystery. We know relatively little about this six-stringed, fretted instrument, except that it was a hybrid between a cello and a guitar, with a very short-lived existence – it became almost totally obsolete soon after Schubert composed the piece. For this recording, I used a violoncello piccolo (five strings), built by Christian Gottfried Schönfelder (1750), which combines the deep, sumptuous resonance of a viola with the virtuoso treble range of a violin, and is technically closer to the arpeggione (number of strings, tuning, etc.). As I played a different instrument in the quintet and trio – a cello by Nicola Gagliano (1737) – this recording was an important experience in my artistic path, as a convincing result of adopting Jos’s philosophy. At the same time, it was an unforgettable journey with Schubert, whose music somehow transports me to a blissful time in the past, to a dimension of pure beauty and joy – that of childhood. Finally, Schubert reminded me of an important notion: that music is the means to expressing the affetti, not the end.

FOUR MUSICIANS ON THEIR APPROACH TO AND EXPERIENCE OF SCHUBERTIADE : SELECTING THE INSTRUMENT, CONSTRUCTING THE SOUNDSCAPE, SENSING SCHUBERT.

LISA SHKLYAVER, CLARINET | DER HIRT AUF DEM FELSEN Der Hirt auf dem Felsen is Franz Schubert’s penultimate work, in which he once again combines the human voice with instruments in masterly fashion. The virtuosic, wide-ranging soprano voice that tells the story of the shepherd is in constant dialogue with the clarinet and the piano, whose parts Schubert uses to present a lively depiction of Nature. The variety of timbre and extensive dynamic range of the clarinet mean that the instrument is not only appropriate for rendering the multitudinous atmospheres of the natural world, but also makes it possible to represent personal, almost intimate human thoughts and feelings in music. CLAIRE CHEVALLIER, FORTEPIANO | FANTASIE, ALLEGRO The first time I encountered the Conrad Graf fortepiano of the Museum Vleeshuis in Antwerp, it was Jos who introduced me to it, the way you introduce someone to an exceptional person. He invited me to play it, and after a few bars I stopped, fascinated: it was as if these sonorities came from the hereafter, at once warm and precious. From that moment on, the instrument entered my DNA. To record the great Schubert pieces for four hands with Jos on this fortepiano was an indispensable part of my personal artistic path and that of our duo. These works are at the same time impossible and sublime. Impossible, because on a six-octave Viennese instrument your personal space is so restricted that almost every note gets in the way of your partner, who is uncomfortably seated, obliged to position his or her arms or hands sideways to play while trying not to collide with the other player’s fingers. The communion this produces, whether in moments of intimacy (the opening of the Fantasie in F minor) or in grandiose orchestral developments (the fugue of the Fantasie in F minor, or the Allegro in A minor), was a revelation to me.

RUCKERS SOCIETY The decision to use an original fortepiano by Conrad Graf (Artesis Antwerp, deposited at the Museum Vleeshuis) for Schubertiade was founded on two considerations. First of all, the instrument takes us very close to the composer: it was built in 1826 – two years before Schubert’s death – by a maker he knew personally. Secondly, it offered a unique opportunity for this eternally fresh instrument – recently restored by Jan Van den Hemel (2011) – to be reunited with its twin brother, a splendid facsimile of 1997, made available by the Ruckers Society. This association has been working for nearly half a century now to promote knowledge of the historical instruments of the Vleeshuis collection, through research into the context of their genesis and performance practice, documentation work and archival care, study of design and realisation, conservation, restoration and active heritage retrieval. The society is named after Hans Ruckers, the founder of a renowned Antwerp harpsichord workshop which was among the best in Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. On the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Ruckers Society in 1994, it was decided to make a facsimile of Graf’s masterpiece (Viennese action, leather-covered hammers, six and a half octaves, four pedals), which had been restored by Adlam/Burnett in 1974 and by Christopher Clarke in 1991. It was also to Clarke that the construction of the facsimile was entrusted. He went on to work on the instrument for three years and was awarded the ‘Prix Liliane Bettencourt pour l’intelligence de la main’ (prize for craftsmanship) for the result. SCHUBERTIADE

Enkele criteria hebben me daarbij gestuurd.

SERENADE (first version)

Hesitantly, softly In the nocturnal quiet of the darkness We are here; And, finger slightly crooked, Softly, softly, We knock On the beloved’s bedroom door.

But now, rising, Swelling, raising Our voices together, loudly We cry out in all confidence: Do not sleep When the voice of affection speaks!

Once a wise man searched far and wide For people with his lantern; How much rarer, then, than gold Are people who are well disposed and dear to us? Therefore, when friendship and love speak, Friend, darling, do not sleep!

Yet what, in all the kingdoms of the world, Can be compared to slumber? So, instead of words and gifts, You shall have repose. One more greeting, one more word, And our cheerful song will cease. Softly, softly, We will creep away again!

AT DIE BRUCK1*

Trot briskly on without rest or respite, My good steed, through night and rain! Why do you shy at bush and bough And stumble on the rough tracks? However deep and dense the forest stretches out, Yet it must at last open up, And a friendly distant light Will greet us from the dark valley.

Well could I fly over hill and field On your lean back, And be satisfied with the world’s merry play And its fair sights; Many an eye smiles on me fondly And offers me peace, love and joy, And yet I rush restlessly Back to my suffering.

For I have already been three days away From her who has bound me for ever; For three days, sun and stars And earth and heaven have vanished for me. Of the pleasures and sorrows that by her side Would now heal my heart, now rend it in pieces, I have felt for three days only the pain, And, alas, have been deprived of the joy!

Far over land and sea we can see Birds flying to warmer climes; How then could love ever Be deceived in its course? Then trot bravely on through the night! And even if the dark tracks vanish, The bright eye of longing still watches, And sweet presentiment will be a sure guide.

MARGUERITE AU ROUET*

GRETCHEN AT THE SPINNING WHEEL*

My peace is gone, My heart is heavy, Never will my peace return, Never again!

When I am without him It is the grave to me; The whole world Is turned to gall.

My poor head Is crazed, My poor mind Is shattered.

Le repos m’a fuie

My peace is gone . . .

For him alone I look Out of the window, Only in hopes of seeing him

Friedrich Wilhelm Krummacher Wie schön bist du, Freundliche Stille, Himmlische Ruh‘!

Do I go outdoors. His proud gait, His noble figure, The smile on his lips, The power in his eyes,

And the magical flow Of his speech, The pressure of his hands, And oh, his kiss! My peace is gone . . .

My bosom yearns To be with him; Oh, if I could embrace him And hold him,

Et l’embrasser Sans me lasser, Et puis mourir Sous ses baisers.

And kiss him As I would like to; If I could die Kissing him!

From the remote blue distance. How fair you are, Kindly silence, Heavenly peace!

Silently the balminess of Spring draws near To the soft womb of the earth, Wreathes the silver source with moss And the meadows with flowers.

THE YOUNG NUN*

How the howling storm surges through the treetops! The rafters rattle, the house shivers! Thunder rolls, lightning flashes, And the night is as dark as the grave.

And yet, and yet, not long ago it raged thus within me too: My life surged as does the storm now, My limbs trembled as does the house now, Love flared up, as does the lightning now, And my heart was as dark as the grave.

Rage on, you fierce and mighty storm; In my heart is peace, in my heart is calm. The loving bride awaits the Bridegroom, Cleansed by the testing fire, Betrothed to eternal Love.

Alleluja!

NACHTGESANG IM WALDE

Johann Gabriel Seidl

Sei uns stets gegrüßt, o Nacht, Aber doppelt hier im Wald, Wo dein Aug‘ verstohlner lacht, Wo dein Fußtritt leiser hallt!

I await you, my Saviour, with yearning gaze! Come, heavenly Bridegroom, take your bride, Deliver the soul from earthly bonds! Hark, the bell rings peacefully from the tower! That sweet sound invites me, Imperiously, to eternal heights. Alleluia!

CHANT NOCTURNE DANS LA FORÊT

NIGHT SONG IN THE FOREST

Be ever welcome, O Night, But doubly so here in the forest, Where your gaze smiles more furtively, Where your footfall echoes more softly!

Into the leafy cups on the branches You pour your silver; You suspend the moon with its beams As a lamp for us in this leafy abode.

Johann Gabriel Seidl

Johann Gabriel Seidl

Whispering breezes are your words, Spinning moonbeams are your threads; All that is touched by your soothing lips Closes its eyes and sinks into sleep! And yet it is too lovely for sleep: Then arise, and waken with horn calls And waves of brighter tones Whatever lay numbed in early slumber!

Ach, an deinem Busen

The birds are already stirring in the woodland glades: They think the night has flown. The wandering deer shyly disperse; They imagine day will soon be breaking. The treetops in the forest rustle mightily; The spring roars as if it were awake!

And when we sing: ‘Night is at home in the forest!’, The echo rings long: ‘She is at home in the forest!’

Then be doubly welcome here in the forest, O lovely Night, Where all that makes you appear so beautiful to us Smiles on us still more sweetly.

GANYMÈDE*

GANYMEDE*

How you glow around me In the radiance of morning, Springtime, beloved! With thousandfold rapture of love The divine feeling Of your eternal warmth Throbs in my heart. Infinite beauty!

Puissé-je te saisir Entre ces bras ! Ah, sur ton sein

O, that I might embrace you In these arms! Ah, on your breast

Mir! Mir! In eurem Schosse Aufwärts! Umfangend umfangen! Aufwärts an deinen Busen, Alliebender Vater!

I lie and languish, And your flowers, your grass Press close to my heart. You cool the burning Thirst of my bosom, Sweet morning breeze! The nightingale calls Lovingly to me from the misty valley.

Me voici, me voici ! Où aller, où aller ?

I come, I come! Ah, whither? Whither?

Upwards! Strive upwards! The clouds float Downwards, the clouds Stoop towards yearning love. To me! To me! Upwards Into your lap! Embracing, embraced! Upwards into your bosom, All-loving Father!

TU NE M’AIMES PAS

YOU DO NOT LOVE ME

Tu l’as dit, énoncé en mots,

My heart is broken, you do not love me! You gave me to know you do not love me! Though I came to you beseeching and wooing And bestowing loving care, you do not love me! You declared so, you said so in words, Words all too explicit, you do not love me!

Was blüht mir die Rose, was blüht der Jasmin, Was blüh‘n die Narzissen? Du liebst mich nicht!

L’INCANTO DEGLI OCCHI

Pietro Metastasio

IL TRADITOR DELUSO

Pietro Metastasio

Recitativo: Aimè, io tremo! Io sento tutto inondarmi Il seno di gelido sudor! Fuggasi! Ah quale... Qual’ è la via? Chi me l’addita?

So must I forgo the stars, the moon, The sun? You do not love me! What does it avail me if the rose, the jasmine, The narcissus bloom for me? You do not love me!

LE CHARME DES YEUX

THE ENCHANTMENT OF THE EYES

On you, dear eyes, Depends my condition; You are my gods, You are my fate. According to your will I feel my mood change: You inspire me to boldness If you twinkle merrily; If you are overcast You make me tremble.

LE TRAÎTRE TROMPÉ

THE TRAITOR FRUSTRATED

Fuyons ! Ah quelle… quelle voie prendre ? Qui peut me l’indiquer ?

Recitative: Alas, I tremble! I feel my bosom drenched With a cold sweat! Yes, let me flee, but where? Where is the path? Who will show it to me?

Oh Dio! che ascoltai? Che m’avvenne? Oh Dio! che ascoltai? Ove son’io? Aria: Ah l’aria d’intorno lampeggia, sfavilla; Ondeggia, vacilla l’infido terren!

Oh God! What do I hear? What is happening to me? Oh God! What do I hear? Where am I?

Aria: Ah, the air around me flashes and flickers; The treacherous ground shifts and trembles! This dark night Surrounds me with horror! What baleful spectres, What furies are these? What fierce terror I feel in my breast!

L’ART DE PRENDRE FEMME

HOW TO CHOOSE A WIFE

Pietro Metastasio

Pietro Metastasio

Come, now, let’s not think any more about it: Courage, let’s have done with it! After all, if I’m taking a wife, I know very well why I’m doing so. I’m doing it to pay my debts, I’m taking her for her cash, And to say so again and again Poses me no difficulty. Of the many different ways in the world Of choosing a wife, I cannot think of no happier way Than mine. One man may choose his wife for love, Another one out of respect,

Georg Philipp Schmidt von Lübeck Ich komme vom Gebirge her, Es dampft das Tal, es braust das Meer, Ich wandle still, bin wenig froh, Und immer fragt der Seufzer, wo? Die Sonne dünkt mich hier so kalt, Die Blüte welk, das Leben alt, Und was sie reden, leerer Schall, Ich bin ein Fremdling überall. Wo bist du, mein geliebtes Land, Gesucht, geahnt, und nie gekannt? Das Land, das Land so hoffnungsgrün, Das Land, wo meine Rosen blühn;

Another on good advice, Another out of obstinacy, Another on a whim: Is that true, or not? And I, Why shouldn’t I take a little slip of a wife As a remedy For all my ills? I’ve said it and I’ll say it again, I’m doing it for cash. So many others do it, And I’ll do it too.

I come down from the mountains; The valley steams, the sea roars. I wander in silence, with but little joy, And always my sighs ask: Where?

The sun seems so cold to me here, The blossom faded, life grown old, And men’s words naught but empty sound: I am a stranger everywhere.

Where are you, my beloved land? Sought for, dreamt of, and never known! The land, the land, so green with hope, The land where my roses bloom,

Where my friends walk, Where my dead rise again, The land that speaks my language: O land, where are you?

I wander in silence, with but little joy, And always my sighs ask: Where? In a ghostly whisper comes the reply: ‘Where you are not – there is happiness!’

Holy Night, you sink down on us; Down too float dreams, Like your moonlight through space, Through the silent breasts of men. They listen joyfully to those dreams, Calling out, when day awakes: ‘Come back, Holy Night! Sweet dreams, come back!’

LE ROI DE THULÉ*

THE KING IN THULE*

There was a king in Thule, Faithful unto the grave, To whom his dying mistress Gave a golden goblet.

He valued nothing above it; He drained it at every feast. His eyes filled with tears Whenever he drank from it.

And when he came to die, He counted the cities of his kingdom, And bequeathed everything to his heirs, Except for the goblet.

He sat at his royal banquet, With his knights around him, In the lofty hall of his forefathers In his castle by the sea.

There stood the old reveller, Drank life’s last glow, And threw the sacred goblet Down into the waves.

He saw it fall and fill with water And sink deep into the sea. His eyes sank too; He never drank another drop.

THE SHEPHERDESS IN THE MEADOW

If her innocent love Pleases her shepherd, The fair shepherdess Will always be happy.

YOU ARE REPOSE*

Friedrich Rückert

Friedrich Rückert

Tu es le repos, La douce paix, Tu es le désir Et ce qui l’apaise.

You are repose, Gentle peace; You are yearning, And what stills it.

Full of joy and pain, I consecrate to you, To be your dwelling here, My eyes and heart.

Come in to me And quietly close The gate Behind you.

Drive all other pain From this breast! Let this heart be full Of your joy.

The temple of my eyes Is illuminated By your radiance alone: O fill it wholly!

AN SILVIA

Matthias Claudius

Das Mädchen: Vorüber! ach, vorüber! Geh, wilder Knochenmann! Ich bin noch jung, geh Lieber! Und rühre mich nicht an.

À SILVIA

TO SILVIA

Who is Silvia? What is she, That all our swains commend her? Holy, fair, and wise is she, The heaven such grace did lend her, That she might admired be.

Is she kind as she is fair? For beauty lives with kindness; Love doth to her eyes repair, To help him of his blindness; And, being helped, inhabits there.

Then to Silvia let us sing, That Silvia is excelling; She excels each mortal thing Upon the dull earth dwelling; To her let us garlands bring!

DIE TAUBENPOST

Johann Gabriel Seidl

Death: Give me your hand, you fair and tender creature! I am a friend, and do not come to punish. Be of good cheer! I am not cruel; You will sleep gently in my arms.

LE PIGEON VOYAGEUR*

PIGEON POST*

I have a carrier pigeon in my pay That is devoted and true; She never stops short of her goal, And never flies too far.

I send her out on reconnaissance Thousands of times each day, Past many a dear place Until she reaches my sweetheart’s house.

There she looks furtively through the window, Observing her expression and her movements, Merrily conveys my greetings And brings my sweetheart’s back.

I no longer need to write a note, I just give her my tears: Oh, she will certainly never fail to deliver them, So zealously does she serve me.

By day or by night, awake or sleep, It is all the same to her; As long as she can roam,

She is perfectly content.

She never grows tired or weary, The path is always new to her; She needs no coaxing or reward, So faithful is that pigeon to me. So I cherish her as faithfully in my heart, Sure of the fairest prize; She is called Longing! Do you know her? The messenger of a constant soul.

LE PÂTRE SUR LE ROCHER

THE SHEPHERD ON THE ROCK

When I stand on the highest rock, Look down into the deep valley, And sing, From far off in the deep, dark valley The echo soars up From the ravines.

The further my voice carries, The clearer it comes back to me From below.

My darling lives so far from me, And that is why I yearn so ardently for her Over there.

In deep affliction I pine away, My happiness is past,

Der Frühling will kommen,

Hope has deserted me on earth, I am so lonely here.

So longingly my song rang out in the wood, So longingly it rang out through the night, It draws up hearts to heaven With wondrous power.

The spring will come, The spring, my joy; Now I will make ready To go off on my wanderings.

GONDOLIER*

Moon and stars are dancing The fleeting round of the spirits: Who would be for ever a prisoner Of earthly cares?

Now, my bark, you may drift In the moonlight; And, free from all bonds, You are rocked in the sea’s bosom.

From the tower of St Mark’s Midnight’s decree has tolled out: Everyone sleeps peacefully, And only the boatman wakes.

THE DWARF*

In the dim light the hills are already fading. The ship glides on the sea’s smooth waves; On board is the queen with her dwarf.

She gazes upward at the high arched vault, Up at the faraway blue, shot through with light, Streaked with the pallor of the Milky Way.

‘Never, never have you lied to me yet, you stars’, She cries. ‘Soon I will vanish from this earth. You tell me so; yet in truth I die willingly.’

Then the dwarf moves to the queen, and binds Around her throat the cord of red silk, And weeps, as if he would go blind with grief.

Il dit : « Tu as causé toi-même ton malheur, Lorsque tu me quittas pour épouser le roi. Ta mort aujourd’hui fait ma joie.

He speaks: ‘You are yourself to blame for this suffering, Because you forsook me for the king. Now only your death can bring me joy.

‘Though I shall hate myself for evermore For putting you to death with these hands, Yet you must perish in an early grave.’

She lays her hand on her heart, so full of young life, And heavy tears flow from the eyes Which she would raise to heaven in prayer. ‘May you reap no sorrow from my death!’ She says. Then the dwarf kisses the pale cheeks, And at once she falls senseless.

Deep calm reigns over the waters, The sea lies motionless, And the sailor looks anxiously At the smooth surface all around him.

TO MUSIC*

O blessed art, how often, in gloomy hours, When life’s wild round has caught me in its toils, Have you kindled warm love in my heart, And borne me away to a better world!

Often a sigh, sprung from your harp, A sweet and holy chord from you, Has opened up for me a heaven of better times: O blessed art, for that I thank you!
