In the time of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), Norway was a new nation, though still under the sway of the King of Sweden, to which it was attached. It was therefore to be expected that the Norwegians – and a fortiori their poets – should feel the need to forge an independent cultural identity for themselves. The Norwegian song emerged in this context as a Scandinavian equivalent of the German Romantic lied, a close-knit fusion of music and poetry. The first figure to distinguish himself in this art was Halfdan Kjerulf (1815-68), the composer of some 125 songs written in the 1850s and 1860s, a quarter of which are settings of German poems. Indeed, numerous Norwegian composers studied in Germany, and for a time adopted that country’s musical style or set texts taken from its literary tradition. Grieg entered the Leipzig Conservatory at the age of fifteen, while Agathe Backer-Grøndahl, in the 1860s and 1870s, studied in Berlin and subsequently with Franz Liszt and Hans von Bülow, the eminent conductor who had given the first performances of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. The challenge, however, was to go beyond the Germanic inheritance by producing specifically Norwegian music. Drawing notably on their national folklore, composers borrowed forms, strophes and rhythms from traditional songs, as may be seen here in the recurring refrain ‘Bro, bro brille’ of Grieg’s Mens jeg venter or the strophic form of his Den hvite, røde rose. Contemporary poets such as Vilhelm Krag and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, who asserted their status as neo-Romantics (nyromantikken), also provided abundant material. Their poetry was characterised, among other traits, by a return to lyricism shorn of socio-political questionings, simply celebrating subjectivity, its imagination, its relationship with nature. As a result, one may perceive a dynamic evolution between a national Romanticism with a political and identity-building vocation on the one hand, and an ‘idealistic’ Romanticism on the other. The poetic trajectory of Ibsen bears witness to this: ‘En 12
Ibsen, Krag and Bjørnson were among the major poets Grieg set to music, following in the footsteps of Kjerulf and bringing the Norwegian art song to its pinnacle. For, once his training was complete, Grieg opposed German musical hegemony and worked to build up a national repertory. He was the first to give concerts with programmes featuring exclusively Norwegian music, founded the Norwegian Academy of Music in 1867, and, in 1898, directed the first Festival of Norwegian Music in Bergen. Alongside this activity, Grieg wrote more than 150 songs on texts in German, Danish and, above all, Norwegian. His compositions testify to the great care he took over the literary text and correct prosody. The piano never overwhelms the vocal line. It creates atmospheres or emotions that emerge from the text and might be seen as the casket that enables the voice to shine like a jewel – good examples of this are the changing harmonies of Jeg giver mitt dikt til Våren and To brune øyne, or the dialogue that is established between piano and voice in En fuglevise. It must be remembered that Grieg was composing for Nina Hagerup, whom he married in 1864, and was keen to glorify her voice, which he associates with the song of the nightingale in the pieces just mentioned. At the turn of the century, Grieg was followed by other composers, including Christian Sinding (1856-1941), Sigurd Lie (1871-1904) and Per Winge (1858-1935); and, among his contemporaries, it is Agathe Backer-Grøndahl (1847-1907) who is the outstanding figure and the most important Norwegian female composer of the late nineteenth century. The art song forms a noteworthy portion of her catalogue; she wrote nearly 200 in all. Agathe Backer had composed from early childhood. 13

fuglevise’, one of his poems set to music by Grieg, dates from the early 1870s, when the dramatist began to distance himself from the national epics of The Pretenders and Peer Gynt; by the late 1880s he was focusing more on the depths of the psyche and on idealistic characters like Dr Stockmann in An Enemy of the People or the protagonist of Rosmersholm.
When she was ten years old her family moved to Christiania (now Oslo), where she took piano lessons from Halfdan Kjerulf, before embarking on travels in Europe – notably central Europe. Her songs are in general stylistically close to the German Romantic lied, although written on Norwegian texts, without any noticeable influence from folklore. In this case, therefore, the dynamic mentioned earlier between national Romanticism and sentimental Romanticism leans towards the latter category. The songs by her on the present recording all come from the cycle Barnets vårdag, a classic of the Norwegian repertory, on poems by Andreas Jynge. Though her contemporaries knew her best as a virtuoso pianist, Agathe Backer-Grøndahl here offers polished songs reflecting the sentiments expressed in the poems. While Grieg and his contemporaries were endeavouring to surpass the German model within a national perspective, Hugo Wolf (1860-1903), as a fervent admirer of Wagner, was busy rethinking the lied inherited from Schubert in terms of the operatic genre. For his Italienisches Liederbuch, he borrowed from Italian folk poetry anonymous texts that he set to music, though without infusing them with ‘local colour’, and giving the piano a key role in its own right. After a brief prelude, the curtain rises on Auch kleine Dinge and its charming, tranquil meditation on ‘little things’. This is followed by lieder that are akin to operatic arias (Mir ward gesagt, Du denkst mit einem Fädchen) or depict types of lovers – suitors who are sent packing in Du denkst . . . and Nein, junger Herr!, a female Don Juan who congratulates herself on all her conquests in Ich hab’ in Penna. Richard Strauss (1864-1949), a contemporary of Wolf, was the composer of more than 200 lieder. They are characterised by captivating harmonies and delicate modulations which, combined with great mastery of word-setting, produced a number of vocal masterpieces with tremendous appeal for the listener. Whereas Wolf had recourse to Italian poetry, it was to Shakespeare that Strauss turned 14
What were the horizons that opened out for composers writing in a context of creation of national identities? What can one write after the establishment of the lied as a finished form of musical expression? The composers on this programme answered these questions by making use of rediscovered national folklore or of contemporary poetry that fully accepted its lyricism, or else by borrowing earlier works from other European literatures – and thereby produced highly appealing songs, creations full of freshness and vivacity. Over and above music itself, they also invite us to adopt a dynamic conception of the history of the arts. Let us recall that Edvard Grieg and Agathe BackerGrøndahl perfected their art by means of European travel: their nationalism was cosmopolitan. Antonio Cuenca Ruiz

Außerdem studierten damals zahlreiche norwegische Komponisten in Deutschland.

MENS JEG VENTER Digte af Vilhelm Krag op. 60 VILHELM KRAG (1871 - 1933) Vildgjæs, vildgjæs i hvide flokker, Solskinsvejr, Ællingen spanker i gule sokker, fine klær. Bro, bro brille. Vug mig, vug mig du blanke vove langt og let. Snart går min terne til dans i skove søndagsklædt. Vug, vug i drøm mig ind, hver tar sin, så tar jeg min... Hør, hvor gigerne spille, Bro, bro brille!

DEN HVIDE, RØDE ROSE BJØRNSTJERNE BJØRNSON (1832 - 1910) Den hvide, røde Rose, saa kaltes Søstre to, ja to.
WHITE ROSE AND RED ROSE
The white rose and the red rose, so they called the two sisters, yes, two. The white one was so quiet, the red one was always laughing. But their roles were reversed, yes, when courting time came around, oh yes. The white one blushed so red, so red, the red one grew so white.
For the man the red one loved, her father would not have him, oh no. But the man the white one loved, he was accepted at once, oh yes. The red one, alas, faded away, yes, in sighs and cares and psalms, oh yes. The white one blushed so red, so red, the red one grew so white.
Ah, but the father took fright and finally said yes, ah yes! And joyful songs rang out on the wedding day, hurrah! And soon smaller roses were frisking about, yes, in shoes and tiny little stockings, oh yes: those of the red one were white, but the white one’s were all red!

J’OFFRE CE POÈME AU PRINTEMPS
I OFFER MY POEM TO SPRING
I offer my poem to Spring, although he is yet to be born, I offer my poem to Spring, like longings added to longings. Then the two of them will make a pact: to lure out the sun with trickery, so that Winter will be forced to release a chorus of streams that will frighten him with their songs, and to drive him from the air with constant scents of flowers – I offer my poem to Spring!
CHANT D’OISEAU
A BIRD’S SONG
One lovely spring day we walked up and down the avenue; alluring, like a mystery, was the forbidden place.
And the west wind wafted, and the sky was so blue; in the lime tree a mother bird sat and sang for her young. I painted poetic images
5. TO BRUNE ØYNE
with a playful kaleidoscope of colours; two brown eyes shone and smiled and listened. Above us we could hear twittering and laughter; but we two took a fond farewell, and never met again.
And when I wander alone up and down the avenue, because of the little feathered folk I never enjoy rest or peace.
Mrs Sparrow sat and listened while we walked innocently; and she made up a poem about us and set it to music.
It is in the birds’ mouths; for under the leafy canopy every beaked songbird carols of that bright spring day.
DEUX YEUX BRUNS
TWO BROWN EYES
Two brown eyes I recently saw: In them lay my home and my world. There shone wisdom and childlike peace; Never, in all eternity, will I forget them!
HUGO WOLF (1860 – 1903)

EVEN SMALL THINGS Even small things can delight us, even small things can be precious. Think how we like to adorn ourselves with pearls; they are costly, and are only small. Think how small the olive is, yet it is sought after for its goodness. Just think of the rose, how small it is, and yet it smells so sweet, as you know.
THEY TOLD ME YOU’RE GOING FAR AWAY They told me you’re going far away. Ah, where are you going, my beloved, my life? I’d like to know the day you’re leaving; I’ll accompany you with tears. I’ll bedew your path with tears think of me, and hope will shine on me! With tears I will be beside you everywhere think of me, don’t forget, dear heart!
YOU THINK YOU CAN CATCH ME You think you can catch me with a thread, with a single glance make me fall in love? I’ve already caught others who flew higher; so you shouldn’t trust me, if you see me laugh. I’ve already caught others, you can be sure of that. I am in love – just not with you.
9.
NEIN, JUNGER HERR! Doch Bessre suchst du dir an Feiertagen. Nein, junger Herr, wirst du so weiter sünd’gen, Wird dir den Dienst dein Alltagsliebchen künd’gen.
NO, YOUNG SIR No, young sir, this is no way to carry on; one should take care to behave decently. I’m good enough for everyday, aren’t I? But you look for something better for holidays. No, young sir, if you keep misbehaving like that, your weekday girl will hand in her notice.
I HAVE A LOVER IN PENNA I have a lover who lives in Penna, another in the plain of Maremma, one in the fair port of Ancona; for the fourth I must travel to Viterbo; another resides over in Casentino, the next one lives with me in my own town; and I have yet another in Magione, four in La Fratta, and ten in Castiglione!
SPELL FOR A MOUSETRAP Little guests, little house, dear Mrs or Mr Mouse, just drop in boldly tonight in the moonlight! But make sure you close the door daintily after you, do you hear? And watch out for your little tail as you do so! After supper we’ll sing, after supper we’ll jump and do a little dance: witt witt! My old cat will probably dance along with us.
Lerallala !
THE COY SHEPHERDESS On the purest spring morning the shepherdess went out and sang, young and beautiful and carefree, so that her voice echoed through the fields: so lala! Lerallala!
Lerallala !
Thyrsis offered her, in exchange for a kiss, two or three lambs there and then; she looked at him archly for a while but went on singing and laughing: so lala! Lerallala!
Lerallala !
And another offered her ribbons, and a third offered his heart; but she made fun of heart and ribbons just as she had of the lambs: just lala! Lerallala!
Rallala!
THE CONVERTED SHEPHERDESS In the red glow of sunset I walked silently through the wood; Damon sat and played his pipe so that it echoed from the rocks: so la la!... Rallala
And he drew me down to him, kissed me so tenderly, so sweetly. And I said: ‘Play again!’ and the good lad played, so la la!
My peace of mind is lost now, my joy has flown,
and I hear in my ears nothing but the old refrain: so la la, le ralla!
IT’S SPRING Spring sends his blue ribbon fluttering through the breezes once more; sweet familiar scents drift over the countryside, full of promise. Violets are already dreaming, soon they will come out. - Hark, from afar comes the soft sound of a harp! Spring, yes, it is you! I have heard you!
MONSIEUR PRINTEMPS
LORD SPRINGTIME
Lord Springtime leaps through the town today in a pair of blue breeches. And anyone who has two young legs, jumps up joyously, sunsoaked, and buys tickets from his lottery.
There he is running round the gabled house, with his pockets full of gifts; now hands are stretching out to him, each young man would like to have a bouquet, oho! for his girlfriend.
I shall also fetch a sweetheart away from her pots and pans. Watch out! We are running across the square: Lord Springtime, give me for her bodice a yellow cowslip!
1-COMMENT RECONNAÎTRE MON VRAI AMOUR
1-HOW SHOULD I MY TRUE LOVE KNOW
Comment reconnaître mon vrai amour d’autres maintenant ?
How should I my true love know From another one? By his cockle hat and staff And his sandal shoon.
Oh !
He is dead and gone, lady, He is dead and gone! At his head a green grass turf, At his feet a stone. Oho.
White his shroud as the mountain snow, Larded with sweet flowers. Which bewept to the grave did go, With true-love showers.

In dein Totbett geh, Er kommt dir nimmermehr.
2-BONJOUR, C’EST LA SAINT-VALENTIN
2-GOOD MORROW, ’TIS SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY
Good morrow, ’tis Saint Valentine’s day, All in the morning betime, And I a maid at your window To be your Valentine. Then up he rose, and donn’d his clothes, And dupp’d the chamber-door; Let in the maid, that out a maid Never departed more.
Par saint Nicolas et sainte Charité ! Quelle effronterie !
By Gis and by Saint Charity, Alack, and fie for shame! Young men will do’t, if they come to’t; By cock, they are to blame. Quoth she, before you tumbled me, You promised me to wed. So would I ha’ done, by yonder sun, An thou hadst not come to my bed.
3-ILS LE PORTÈRENT SUR LA CIVIÈRE TÊTE NUE
3-THEY BORE HIM BAREFACED ON THE BIER
They bore him barefaced on the bier; Hey non nonny, nonny, hey nonny! And in his grave rain’d many a tear: Fare you well, my dove!
For bonny Sweet Robin is all my joy. And will he not come again? No, no, he is dead: Go to thy death-bed: He will never come again.
His beard was white as snow, All flaxen was his poll. He is gone, he is gone, And we cast away moan: God ha’ mercy on his soul! And of all Christian souls! I pray God. God be wi’ ye!
JE PLANE
I FLOAT
I float as if on angel’s wings: my foot barely touches the ground; in my ears I hear a sound like my beloved’s farewell.
It sounds so sweet, so soft and quiet; it speaks words so shy, so tender and pure, that the echoing song gently lulls me into a blissful dream.
My glistening eyes – while I am filled with the sweetest of melodies – see, as plain and clear as day, my smiling lover passing by.

A CHIRPING LARK In the night came such a delightful guest: Spring, with his sun and his warming breath. It is he, he, whom I have awaited so long. Now I announce the glorious day with chirping trills and jubilant cries throughout the budding meadows. I rise in song from the grey tussocks high up towards the glittering blue, where thoughts aspire, and even higher; then back down to earth, to the spot where I can rest when my wings are tired, before soaring once more towards the sun.
I know, it is snug amid tussocks and straw; but it is brighter there in the eternal blue, it makes my notes so strong. And I am the first messenger of Spring; I bear my song as a thanksgiving to our God, I who am only a chirping lark.
21. VAARMORGEN I SKOGEN
Maman sera contente !
SPRING MORNING IN THE WOODS Ah, hurry, come on! For now we must go out and search meadow and thicket to see if even a single tiny flower has come to us in the night. But don’t say anything, it will be for Mother, a flower and its little leaf. Come on, we’ll surely find it! How pleased she’ll be! I think it’s more likely to be under the branches in the woods, for the air is mild there. It’s all shiny there! And there! Just look! Pussy willows with yellow down! Oh, oh! There are lots, yellow and white and grey! First we’ll stroke them, then we’ll pluck them! And you shall have them all. And then we’ll take them home to Mother and come back to pick even more . . . But as we play, we turn round and Mother is standing beside us laughing!
GATHERING FLOWERS Liverwort and birch branches, cat’s-foot with velvety stalks, mountain arnica and woodrush, bright blue violets, wood anemone and marigold: the basket is full!

AT DUSK All the flowers, moist with dew, have said ‘Good night’ to the sun. The glow-worm has lit his torch, and sits shining in the thicket. The butterfly has put on his glistening hose and lain down to rest in a blue bellflower, dreaming lovely dreams of the sun and the scent of violets.
SLEEP IN PEACE Sleep in peace, sleep, my little one, now it is night. Don’t you know that all the birds have long since closed their eyes in wood and thicket, and the brightly coloured flowers have rocked everything to gentle slumber? So calmly we must place your cheek next to mine on the pillow.
Sleep in peace, sleep, my little one, the night is not long. And tomorrow you will wake to the happy song of the birds, and the sun will shine once more in the bright flowery meadow. Sleep in peace, sleep, my little one, in your soft bed.
