O cara Armonia. Guitar Works A perusal of guitar music in Europe at the beginning of the 19th century is bound to reveal the extraordinary nature of Fernando Sor’s contribution to the repertoire. By comparison, both Fernando Ferrandiere’s Arte de tocar la guitarra (Madrid 1799) and Federico Moretti’s Méthode pour la guitar (Paris 1830) were essentially limited in idiom and perspective.

It was at the turn of the century that the guitar not only gained the sixth string, but also abandoned the use of double strings that it had inherited from baroque instruments. The new guitar thus had a wider range, and was able to address more complex musical structures that went beyond the sphere of occasional pieces.

A great virtuoso guitarist in his own right, Sor was the first to build a bridge between his own output and that of other European composers of the period. His ideal models were Haydn and Mozart, whose music he had got to know during his youth, both in Spain and following his travels to stay in Paris, London and Moscow.

Although Sor was clearly not in the same league as the composers he so admired, he was certainly able to imbue his works with a deeply poetic vein, especially his shorter pieces. The delicate sensitivity of his motifs, his impeccable formal balance and his attention to harmonic structure were all ideally suited to the sound of the guitar.

It is important for today’s listeners to remember that Sor played his compositions on an instrument that was significantly different from that of today. It had a smaller soundboard, fitted with gut strings for the upper registers and less tension in the tuning.

The two editions of Sor’s Méthode also provide us with further information about the way he played the instrument. We know, for instance, that he did not use the nails of his right hand, and that he continued in the baroque (and earlier) tradition of resting the little finger of his right hand on the soundboard. Moreover, instead of playing passages consisting of fast scales by alternating the use of the index and middle finger, he preferred the legato technique. When playing a period instrument today, these expedients are important in the way they affect the sound, the articulation of the notes and various other aspects.

Until he encountered Joseph Panormo, Sor had declared that the workshops of Juan Pages, Fernand Lacote and the Martinez brothers of Malaga produced the instruments that he liked best.

Around the beginning of the century, however, he met in London the brilliant scion of an important dynasty of guitar builders of Italian origins.

On Sor’s instructions, Panormo built a guitar that was later perfected by his son Louis. This model was the basis for another instrument that was built in 1835, when Sor was still in London, and it is this guitar that has been used for the present recording.

On account of its structure and the system of inner brace bars adopted, this instrument represents a conceptual bridge between the guitars of the previous generation and the brilliant improvements made just a few decades later by Antonio de Torres.

— Sor’s admiration for Mozart and the ideal classical forms is evident in the Variations sur un Thème de Mozart Op. 9. Preceded by an Introduction, they develop the “Das klinget so herrlich” theme from the Magic Flute, which Sor changes slightly. Similar adaptations are also to be found in the Six Airs Choisis Op. 19, which also derive from the Magic Flute, although they do not feature Mozart’s indications regarding rhythm and phrasing.

The five minuets belong to different collections (Op. 11 and 24), with the exception of the Minuet in G, which constitutes the last movement of the Theme with Variations Op 3. The Andante Largo was published as the fifth piece in the series Six Petites Pièces Op. 5. These are

very short pieces that only last a few bars, but it is precisely in such works that Sor so successfully puts together his lovely, simple melodies to achieve a magnificent sense of overall balance.

Composed in 1814, or perhaps earlier, and dedicated to Ignace Pleyel, the Fantasia Op. 7 is a more complex work. A long Introduction in C minor is followed by a theme in C major which gives rise to a cycle of seven variations that conclude in the finale. The work bears witness to the way Sor manages to extend the range of the instrument well beyond the confines pertaining to his contemporaries: thirds, fast passages in scales, pizzicatos, octaves in rapid succession…

Lastly there are also the Studies, which were an important focus for Sor throughout his life.

These now belong to various collections with different opus numbers, and are still to this day a fundamental teaching tool, as students of the guitar are well aware. But then Sor was able to reconcile his pedagogical intent with poetic vision, adopting an idiom rooted in the classical world to herald the forthcoming language of romanticism.

Œuvres pour guitare En observant la production de musique pour guitare au début du XIXe siècle en Europe, on comprend immédiatement quelle fut la motivation de Fernando Sor dans la construction de son répertoire. En comparaison, L’Arte de tocar la guitarra de Fernando Ferrandiere (Madrid, 1799), ainsi que la Méthode pour la guitare de Federico Moretti (Paris 1830) montrent une écriture pour guitare résolument ancrée à des modèles idiomatiques très limités.

Juste au tournant du siècle, la guitare acquiert sa sixième corde et abandonne l’utilisation de doubles cordes, héritées des instruments baroques, et le nouvel instrument, de par sa grande tessiture, est capable de réaliser des structures musicales plus complexes et de s’émanciper de son répertoire de circonstance.

Sor est le premier à construire un pont entre sa production propre et celle de l’Europe de son temps, en prenant comme modèles Haydn et Mozart, avec les œuvres desquels il se familiarisa pendant sa jeunesse, en Espagne, ainsi que lors de ses voyages et séjours à Paris, Londres et Moscou.

Sans pour autant se comparer à de tels maîtres, il a pu verser dans son travail une veine poétique d’un sentiment profond et authentique, qui se manifeste surtout dans ses œuvres les plus courtes.

La sensibilité délicate de ses thèmes, un équilibre formel impeccable et le soin de la structure harmonique sont d’une grande éloquence pour l’expression et le traitement sonore qu’il offre à la guitare.

Il ne faut pas oublier que Sor jouait avec un instrument significativement différent de celui d’aujourd’hui, avec une table d’harmonie plus petite, des cordes aigues en boyau, et une tension des cordes inférieure a celle d’aujourd’hui.

Dans les deux éditions de sa Méthode, nous avons obtenu d’autres informations importantes sur son jeu. On sait par exemple qu’il n’a jamais utilisé les ongles de la main droite et a gardé l’ancienne coutume, datant de l’époque baroque (et même d’avant), d’appuyer le petit doigt sur la table d’harmonie ; et aussi qu’il jouait certains passages rapides de gammes en utilisant non pas l’index et le majeur, mais une alternance du pouce et de l’index, ou le legato. Pour l’interprétation sur instruments originaux, l’incorporation de ces techniques a des effets importants et substantiels qui se répercutent sur le son, l’articulation, et bien d’autres aspects.

Toujours dans sa Méthode, Sor déclare que les instruments qu’il préférait sortaient des ateliers de Juan Pages, Fernand Lacote, et des frères Martinez de Malaga. Mais au tournant du siècle, il rencontra à Londres Joseph Panormo, luthier appartenant à une importante dynastie de fabricants de guitares d’origine italienne. Sous la direction de Fernando Sor, Panormo construisit un modèle de guitare qui sera perfectionné par son fils Louis et qui a donné naissance à l’instrument, daté de 1835, qui a été utilisé pour cet enregistrement.

Cet instrument, de par sa structure et son système interne de barrage, est le pont idéal entre les guitares de la génération précédente et les géniales intuitions et réalisations de Antonio de Torres qui seront créés quelques décennies plus tard.

— L’admiration pour Mozart et pour les schémas des idéaux classiques est évidente dans Variations sur un thème de Mozart, op. 9.

Composé sur le thème de la Flûte enchantée « Das klinget so herrlich » (O cara Armonia), ils sont précédés d’une introduction, suivie par le thème que Sor a modifié légèrement par rapport à l’original. Des changements similaires sont présents dans les Six Airs Choisis, op 19, extraits eux aussi de la Flûte enchantée et dans lesquelles, d’ailleurs, il omet les marques de tempo et d’articulation indiquées par Mozart.

Les cinq menuets appartiennent à diverses

collections (op.11 et 24), à l’exception du Menuet in G, qui est le dernier mouvement du Thème avec variations, op. 3. L’Andante Largo est publié en tant que cinquième morceau d’une série de Six petites pièces, op. 5.

Ce sont des formes courtes, des compositions brèves de quelques mesures, mais c’est précisément dans ces domaines que Sor est capable de réaliser une superbe synthèse, grâce à une construction de thèmes d’une beauté simple, et à de merveilleux équilibres.

L’op. 7 Fantaisie, dédié à Ignace Pleyel, est un travail complexe, composé en 1814 ou plus tôt. Une longue introduction en ut mineur est suivie par un thème en ut majeur et par une série de sept variations et un finale. Le déplacement des limites instrumentales atteint par Sor, par rapport à ses contemporains, apparaît d’une manière très évidente : tierces et octaves en succession rapide, sons étouffées, succession d’épisodes virtuoses…

Enfin les Études, auxquelles Sor se dédie avec constance tout au long de sa vie, et qui sont réunies sous différents opus, forment encore aujourd’hui un des fondements de la pédagogie pour guitare, et sont une base à partir de laquelle Sor a pu cultiver une intention didactique efficace, avec un contenu poétique toujours inspiré et en utilisant un vocabulaire qui, bien qu’appartenant au monde classique, parle déjà clairement la langue du romanticisme.

O cara Armonia. Opere per chitarra Se consideriamo quale fosse in Europa la produzione di musica per chitarra all’inizio del secolo XIX ci appare subito evidente quale impulso costituì l’opera di Fernando Sor per la costruzione del repertorio di questo strumento.

L’Arte de tocar la guitarra di Fernando Ferrandiere (Madrid 1799) così come la Méthode pour la guitare di Federico Moretti (Parigi 1830) mostrano una scrittura per chitarra decisamente ancorata a schemi idiomatici e compositivi di modesto profilo.

Proprio a cavallo tra i due secoli la chitarra acquisiva la sesta corda ed abbandonava l’uso delle corde doppie ereditato dagli strumenti barocchi ed il nuovo strumento, potendo contare su una maggiore estensione, era in grado di eseguire strutture musicali più complesse affrancandosi dal suo repertorio di composizioni di circostanza.

Sor, straordinario virtuoso del suo strumento, è il primo a costruire un ponte tra la sua produzione e quella europea del suo tempo, assumendo come modelli ideali Haydn e Mozart con la cui musica egli era venuto a contatto nella sua gioventù sia in Spagna che a seguito dei suoi viaggi e soggiorni di Parigi, Londra e Mosca.

Ma seppur certamente non in grado di reggere a tale confronto egli fu in grado di effondere nelle sue opere una vena poetica di profonda e genuina sensibilità che si manifesta specialmente nelle opere di piccole dimensioni. La delicata sensibilità dei suoi temi, un impeccabile equilibrio formale, la cura della struttura armonica trovano un veicolo di espressione ideale nella eloquenza del suono della chitarra.

Non dobbiamo dimenticare che Sor eseguiva le sue opere con uno strumento significativamente diverso da quello odierno, con una tavola armonica più piccola, montato con le corde acute in budello e con una minore tensione delle corde.

Inoltre dalle due edizioni del suo Metodo ci sono giunte altre importanti informazioni sul suo modo di suonare. Sappiamo ad esempio che egli non usava le unghie della mano destra e manteneva l’antica consuetudine risalente dal periodo barocco (ed ancora prima) di appoggiare il mignolo della mano destra sulla tavola armonica, così come quella di non eseguire alcuni passaggi veloci di scale utilizzando l’alternanza di indice e medio ma la tecnica del legato. Tutto ciò oggi, utilizzando uno strumento dell’epoca, produce ovviamente effetti importanti e sostanziali che si riflettono sul suono,

sull’articolazione e su molti altri aspetti.

Fino all’incontro con Joseph Panormo, Sor dichiarò che gli strumenti da lui preferiti provenivano dalle botteghe di Juan Pages, di Fernand Lacote e dei fratelli Martinez di Malaga. Ma intorno all’inizio del secolo egli incontrò a Londra, questo geniale liutaio appartenente ad una importante dinastia di costruttori di chitarre di origini italiane. Sotto le direttive di Fernando Sor, Panormo costruì un modello di chitarra che sarà poi perfezionato da suo figlio Louis e che ha dato origine allo strumento che è stato usato per questa registrazione datato 1835, quindi risalente al periodo londinese di Sor. Questo strumento, per la sua struttura e per il suo sistema di incatenatura interna, rappresenta il ponte ideale tra gli strumenti della generazione precedente e le geniali intuizioni e realizzazioni di Antonio de Torres che nasceranno dopo pochi decenni.

— L’ammirazione verso Mozart e verso gli ideali modelli classici sono evidenti nelle Variations sur un Théme de Mozart, op. 9. Composte sul tema del Flauto Magico «Das klinget so herrlich», sono precedute da una Introduzione a cui segue il Tema che Sor modifica leggermente rispetto all’originale. Analoghe modificazioni sono presenti nelle Six Airs choisis, op. 19, anch’esse estratte dal Flauto Magico, in cui fra l’altro non appaiono i segni di agogica e di articolazione indicati da Mozart.

I cinque Minuetti appartengono a varie raccolte (opp. 11 e 24), con l’eccezione del Minuetto in Sol che costituisce l’ultimo movimento del Tema con variazioni, op. 3. L’Andante largo è pubblicato come quinto brano di una serie di Six petites pièces, op. 5.

Si tratta di piccole forme, brevi composizioni di poche battute, ma è proprio in esse che Sor riesce abilmente ad ottenere un magnifico equilibrio attraverso una costruzione di temi di semplice bellezza e di esemplare equilibrio.

La Fantasia, op. 7, dedicata a Ignace Pleyel, è un’opera complessa composta nel 1814 o forse precedentemente. Una lunga Introduzione in Do minore è seguita da un Tema in Do maggiore e da un ciclo di sette variazioni che si concludono con un finale. In esse appare ben evidente l’allargamento dei confini strumentali operato da Sor in confronto ai suoi contemporanei: terze, passaggi veloci di scale, pizzicati, ottave in rapida successione…

Infine gli Studi, forma a cui Sor si dedicherà costantemente per tutta la sua vita e che raccolse in vari numeri d’opera. Essi costituiscono ancor oggi uno dei fondamenti didattici per gli studenti di chitarra e formano il terreno su cui Sor seppe ben coltivare efficaci intenti pedagogici e contenuti poetici sempre ispirati utilizzando un vocabolario che seppur appartenente al mondo classico parla già chiaramente l’imminente linguaggio del romanticismo.

Architect and co-founder of 5+1AA Architecture Agency (Genoa, Milan and Paris). In parallel to his design activity which begins in 1995 with the foundation of the studio, he begins an intense research activity related to the theme of dialogue and matter that accompanies him and daily contaminates his architectural works. The research for dialogue takes shape when 500x100 is founded in 2014, a place for dialogue through physical encounter, a research of glances and words that meets generate reflections, connections and thoughts about cities. He has been a visiting professor in numerous international seminars and a professor at KSU Kent State University of Florence and at the university of Ferrara. He has won numerous international prizes, among these, the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale for the New Cinema Palace of Venice project, “The Chicago Athenaeum” for the best 2011 global project with the “Horizontal Tower”, and more recently, the Award for «the best retail building in the world» with the Marseilles Docks at the 2016 MIPIM awards in Cannes.
