ALPHABET FOR THE GUITAR Published in 1606, Girolamo Montesardo’s Nuova inventione d’intavolatura, per sonare li balletti sopra la chitarra spagniuola completely revolutionized the way of writing and playing music for the guitar. It introduced for the first time a practical system for representing the notes: an Alphabet, which consisted in making each chord correspond to a letter. This simple code made it possible for anyone who possessed a guitar to play a dance or accompany a singer by playing the ‘letters’ placed in a simple line, with indications of the metre and note values. Printed editions of fashionable airs, bassi ostinati and dances using this system of notation soon became widespread, largely in the shape of extensive collections of dances using rasgueado strumming techniques, or fingerstyle playing, for all keys. Alongside the ordinary alphabet, guitarists also used a sort of complementary counterpart: the false alphabet, which was a collection of the same chords found in the ordinary alphabet, but adulterated with acciaccature, or notes that were extraneous to the harmony of the chord. The earliest example was provided by Giovanni Paolo Foscarini, who included it in the frontispiece of his work Li cinque libri della chitarra alla spagnuola, published in Rome in 1640. In his Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española (Zaragoza, 1674), Gaspar Sanz also wrote what he described as a laberinto de las falsas, a progression of modulations with dissonant chords. Foscarini’s method of indicating the chords heralded the manner of playing with acciaccatura, as explained by Francesco Gasparini in L’armonico pratico al cimbalo (Venice, 1708), a work that was reprinted nine times within the space of one hundred years. In the dissonant alphabet, the chords were like new

colours that extended the sound range of the instrument. Although they did not include such constructs in the frontispieces of their works, Corbetta, Pellegrini, Carbonchi, Granata, Valdambrini, Bartolotti and Santiago de Murcia all made direct use of them in their compositions, writing them out in full. It was the very nature of the guitar that suggested the use of the alphabet. When composers wrote a simple bichord (two strings tuned in unison) in tablature for the high register, with no supporting bass notes, they tacitly also suggested the other blank chords to be played. They mixed different sounds to achieve resonance, and when they just wanted that particular bichord they added dots to the other lines of the staff to indicate silence. On his return from a stay in Rome, Gaspar Sanz described the clarity of timbre of the guitar in his Instrucción de música: There are many ways of stringing the guitar, because in Rome the Maestros string the guitar with fine strings, without adding any bourdon, in the fourth or the fifth. In Spain it is the opposite, because some use two bourdons in the fourth, and other two in the fifth, and at least one for every order.

This way of tuning the guitar was to undergo change in the course of time, as Robert de Visée makes clear in the forewords he wrote for his two guitar books, the Livre de guitar dédié au roy and the Livre de pièces pour la guitare (Paris 1682 and 1686), in which the two strings of the fourth course were tuned an octave apart. Later the fifth course underwent the same treatment, as witnessed by Francisco Guerau’s Poema harmónico of 1694. Clearly there was an increasing tendency towards dark timbres that paved the way for the birth of the modern guitar in the early 1800s.

5 English The foremost expression of the false alphabet was achieved by Corbetta in his Pièces pour deux guitars (Paris 1674), where the two guitars create layered chords with false notes, thereby effecting a sound mass of ten notes rich in acciaccatura. Why play them as a trio? Playing the solo repertoire for baroque guitar and theorbo with the addition of a basso continuo part, even if it wasn’t in the original score, is an operation that divides audiences into two factions: the purists always look askance, insisting on the ontological chastity of the single instrument, while more liberal listeners will prick up their ears and wonder if this is not as reasonable an approach to performance as any other. After all, historical evidence pertaining to the guitarists and theorbo players of the period reveals that they also played their music with other instruments. In his memoirs Adam Ebert describes an incident concerning Francesco Corbetta that indirectly throws light on the solo repertoire for the guitar: Recently the guitarist Corbetta, famous throughout the world, who has taught all the Potentates of Europe, came here from England. But because he had had the misfortune of breaking a nail (and with someone as elderly as he they tend to grow rather slowly) he was unable to perform at the festival with his group… Corbetta was highly disgruntled, complaining that he had arrived from England with considerable difficulty and, given that fact that he had himself guaranteed the musicians of the group from Italy, he was going to have to pay them out of his own pocket.

This curious anecdote suggests that Corbetta wrote exclusively for solo guitar, with the exception of his Pièces pour deux guitars (Paris 1674) and the two symphonies for solo guitar with basso continuo that were part of the Varii capricii per la ghittara spagnuola pub-

lished in Milan in 1643. So what in fact might he have played at that concert, were it not for the broken nail? And why mention the “musicians of the group”? The simplest and most probable answer is that Corbetta would have played his own works for solo guitar accompanied by other players, perhaps improvising together on follies, pavans, chaconnes, bergamasks, passacaglias, courantes and capers for all the letters of the alphabet. There is a lovely engraving by Pier Leone Ghezzi that provides us with iconographic evidence of the practice of playing together, which is what our trio is all about. Moreover, it is accompanied by a caption that also bears witness to the use of the colascione, or Italian longnecked lute: Domenico with his brother Bresciani. The former is portrayed frontally and admirably plays the two-stringed small colascione, whereas the latter, portrayed from the back, accompanies him on the guitar. It was in the month of April 1765 at the Palace of Sans Souci, where his Majesty the King had summoned the two of them to play.

The picture thus conjured up is extremely interesting, in that it confirms the use of the guitar in the late 18th century (April 1765), and shows that the plectrum was used to play this beautifully engraved instrument. What would the two brothers have been likely to play? In all probability the answer is the same: they would have improvised. The choice of instruments and approach to performance The pieces recorded for this CD all date back to the first half of the 1600s, with the exception of those by Santiago de Murcia belonging to the Codex Saldivar of 1730. The use of the bass colascione tallies with historical evidence and relates to its close connections with the world of the guitar, which produced a similar sort of sound. The origins of the instrument can be traced back to the commedia dell’arte, as

6 shown in Jacques Callot’s etchings of the “Balli di Sfessania” portraying Pulcinella dancing and playing the colascione. With the exception of the compositions by Kapsberger, I have added the colascione parts to the pieces for solo guitar in keeping with the rules of counterpoint. Although there is a wide range of percussion in these pieces, the use of the instruments as such is a delicate issue because their place in early music was always a moot point and a subject of endless discussion. In his Musica Getutscht (Basle, 1511), Sebastian Virdung branded all percussion as an invention of the devil that could only ruin the finest melodies! We have tried to amalgamate the varied realms of percussion with the frequencies of the guitar, theorbo and colascione. In this the folk tradition has proved helpful, suggesting the use of sieves, glass bottles, and draining boards. All the percussion instruments used for this recording are to be found in the plates included in Michael Praetorius’s Syntagma Musicum (Wittenberg, 1615), including the xylophone. The use of the chitarra battente has the double aim of enhancing both the rhythmic beat of folk dances such as Carbonchi’s Scaramanzia, and the solo features of other pieces, where it has replaced its older sibling, the baroque guitar. The last track, Impro #4, was written by us and is structured around a single harmonic development in the ordinary alphabet with the same development in the false alphabet superimposed above it. Since recordings tend to outlive those who perform them, we have done our best to enjoy the music to the full, following the joyful precept placed at the end of all the early treatises: “Vivi lieto!” – “Live cheerfully!” SIMONE VALLEROTONDA Rome, May 2017

4 QUESTIONS FOR ENRICO ONOFRI SIMONE Enrico, in your career as a world-famous soloist

you have performed with various continuo players, each with a different approach to accompaniment. Since your role regards melody, how does it feel to be accompanied by harmonic developments based on false chords, and how does this influence the way you play, and indeed differ from playing with a harmonically clean basso continuo? ENRICO When the use of acciaccatura and extraneous notes broadens the basic harmony, accompaniment of this sort generally tends to enrich the sound range of the instruments. I have always believed that the practice of adding notes far removed from the basic chords could expand the harmony, and at the same time help enrich the timbre and resonance of the instrument. An accompaniment of this sort invites the violinist to seek deeper, richer sounds, and thus to imagine wider soundscapes, giving rise to a different voice. S The false chord gave guitarists new colours and

compositional perspectives, extending the traditional harmonic system. Was this something that also engaged the violinists of the time? Who were the foremost exponents of this sort of endeavour?

It certainly was. What engaged them was not a vertical approach to harmony, but an inventive use of counterpoint, as in the innovative trio sonatas by Dario Castello, which are full of false affinities that increase the pathos of the most expressive passages, forcing the continuo player to superimpose extraneous harmonies. E

S The use of the false alphabet was also a way of

committing variation to paper. As a function it was closely linked to improvisation, opening up new harmonic horizons on

7 English Menu account of its intrinsic dissonance. In the sphere of melody, was there a reverse process whereby the violin diminished its role, thereby freeing itself from the constraints of traditional theory and practice?

Regarding diminution as such, the examples found in the treatises for melodic instruments reveal that each player created his own personal style in diminishing, on a more or less shared base, and I like to think that this was far more extensive in practice than it might appear to be in the treatises. To support this theory there are various examples of non-academic written ornamentation. Moreover, there are examples of diminution unrelated to the original text. A case in point are the diminutions on Palestrina’s madrigal “Vestiva i colli”, written by the Milanese violinist Rognoni and specifically described as “non regulate al canto”, in other words not constrained by the voice part. The outcome thus included false harmonies and dissonance with the voices of the original madrigal. So it wasn’t unusual for a soloist to use dissonance in improvising ornamentation so as to enrich the range of feelings expressed by the original text. This naturally called for deep knowledge of all parts of the musical text, and of harmony and counterpoint, so that such dissonance actually enhanced the original intent, and was not merely a superficial effect. E

which boundaries and restrictions still need to be addressed? E This is a delicate subject that calls for considera-

ble discussion. I can only say that the modern tendency towards standardization also regards the sphere of the arts. In the music market, the phenomenon tends to encourage artists involved in historically correct performance to adopt uniform practices in the way they play, which the musicians themselves as well as the audiences find reassuring. Often enough, there is simply no room for doubt concerning historical authenticity, and this can lead to engrained performance habits and stereotypes. For my part, since the start of my career I have based my way of playing on my interpretation of the sources, but without simply emulating or conforming to existing modes. In actual fact, the sources sometimes contrast with each other, suggesting different ways of doing the same thing. So it is clear that in the past the way people played differed substantially from one place to another, and one period to another, and while all this makes the performer’s task more difficult, it also encourages an approach that is independent, unconstrained by the standards we find so reassuring. For me every concert is a new opportunity for trying a fresh approach based on something else that I have learnt. But then I am constantly diffident about my own interpretation of the sources, except on the very rare occasions when they are as clear as the light of day.

S Recent research into early music has brought to light

many aspects of the way musicians used to play their instruments, so that we now have a fairly good idea of what really took place. Yet certain historically proven realities still elicit shocked reactions on the part of audiences, whose expectations have perhaps contributed to a degree of restraint among players. In your approach to performance, to what extent do you try to break down such barriers, and

Perché suonarle in trio?
