THE HEART AND THE EAR:

the Bauyn Manuscript and the dawn of the French harpsichord tradition The Bauyn Manuscript The Bauyn manuscript is preserved at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris (Vm 7, 1852, f.60). A most important source of seventeenth century harpsichord music, it contains also some organ music and some pieces for viols; the volume includes works by some of the greatest clavecinistes active in Paris in the second half of the seventeenth century: Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, Louis Couperin, Jacques Hardel, Jean Henry d’Anglebert, Johann Jakob Froberger among other, lesser-known authors.

It is not known to whom the manuscript belonged, although recent studies of coats of arms embossed on the front cover suggest that it was given as a wedding gift to the bride. It is also unclear when the manuscript was compiled; research on the ink and the paper suggest it must have been written between 1690 and 1706, although most of the music was composed in the 1650s or even earlier. A possible explanation for this discrepancy between dates of compilation and content is an “evident intention to preserve harpsichord music that was circulating in manuscript among connoisseurs in mid-seventeenth-century Paris. The early years of Louis [XIV]’s reign [...] were years when French harpsichord music, dominated by Chambonnières, had flourished. In the 1690s, there was interest in preserving the music of this golden age: and in the 1690s there was a musical commerce able to respond to this interest.” (Gustafson, 2014).

The music preserved within the Bauyn manuscript displays all of the variety of styles that influenced both the composition and the performance of harpsichord music in the mid-seventeenth century; transcriptions

of popular French lute music by Mesangeau and Pinel are copied alongside Froberger’s Toccatas which are derivative of the Italian keyboard school. It is fascinating to hear these pieces as a collection; the influence of the characteristics of the various schools on the writing of the first great clavecinistes, Chambonnières and Louis Couperin, can be heard.

The text The musical texts of the Bauyn Manuscript compared to other contemporary manuscript sources of the same music are, on the whole, relatively unadorned; there are few ornaments, sometimes the inner voices are not fully written out and, in performance, it is tempting to fill out standard musical formulae, such as cadences.

The Bauyn text, therefore, requires the performer to add ornamentation, much in the manner described by Saint-Lambert in Les principes du clavecin (Paris, 1702): [The student] is extremely free in the choice of agrémens. In the pieces he studies he may also play them in places where they are not marked; remove those that are [there] if he finds that they do not suit the piece, and add others to his liking.

The ornamentation may then, of course, be varied further during the numerous repetitions; both commissioner and recipient of this text must have been considerable keyboard performers.

Le Gallois (Paris, 1680) describes the variety and extent of ornamentation for which Chambonnières was famous: Every time he [Chambonnières] played a piece, he introduced new beauties, with grace notes, passages, and various embellishments, including double cadences. In a word,

5 English he so diversified them with all these different adornments that he disclosed ever fresh graces in them.

Chambonnières enriched his writing by varying his pieces at every playing; a great master, the fashion he contributed so much to establishing profoundly influenced the following generation of harpsichordists, many of whom were his pupils. It is reasonable to assume that works written by the clavecinistes of his circle should also be performed with the same richness of ornamental invention and elaboration.

Paradoxically these pieces were copied into the Bauyn manuscript at a time when composers were beginning to voice their concerns about how their work was performed and disseminated. Chambonnières is among the first composers who tried to assert more explicitly the composer’s intention within the score and limit unauthorized improvisation by a performer at the composer’s expense; in the first book of his Pièces de clavecin, published in 1670, he raises the problem of the number of “unfaithful” copies of his work in circulation: Having, however, been advised from various places that there is a sort of commerce [of my music] in almost all the cities in the world where the harpsichord is known, using copies that circulate, although these have many errors and thus harm my reputation; this made me feel that I should give away volontarily what was being taken away from me with violence, and I should bring to the light myself what others had already brought halfway out on my behalf. And since I give them [my pieces] with all their embellishments, as in the present collection, they will no doubt be more useful to the public, and do me more honor, than all those unfaithful copies that appear under my name.

Interestingly Froberger too claimed that nobody was able to play his pieces without first having heard him perform them, and it is said that this is the reason he withheld some of his music from dissemination.

Improvisation is a subtle and rule-governed art form;

in the hands of those without subtlety or understanding of the rules it becomes an abuse. Thus French harpsichord music published post-Bauyn employs some of the most prescriptive notation of the Baroque period; in the printed music of Chambonnières, d’Anglebert and, later François Couperin (to name but the earliest), every ornament, every nuance is notated with increasing precision, and the tables des agrémens are often preceded by a warning that ornaments must be performed exactly as written and only where notated.

Yet if the score does not provide enough information for the performer to do justice to its potential, as is the case with the Bauyn manuscript, then the instrument that a performer of the time would have had at his disposal can help suggest ways in which contemporary harpsichordists might have taken advantage of its characteristics in order to best suit the music. Accounts of performers of the time, too, can help understand other aspects of performance.

Instrument and performance The harpsichord used for this recording was built in Paris in 1658 by Louis Denis. It is a French harpsichord by one of the finest of French makers, who sought properties and qualities other than those emphasized by more celebrated makers such as Ruckers, and it was not modified (ravalé) by later French instrument makers as were so many instruments of the 17th century. It is also one of the earliest surviving French double-manual harpsichords to reach us in playing condition and, as such, a rare and important testimony of a specific type of instrument and sound.

The qualities of this harpsichord’s sound greatly affected my understanding of this repertoire and influenced many interpretive choices. Without doubt, the

6 most striking feature of the Denis harpsichord, and one of the principal characteristics that distinguish it from other instruments, is the sonority: the sound remains consistently full, present and rich for an astonishingly long time. I was particularly surprised to find myself taking considerably more time playing a work than I had on other harpsichords; this was infinitely desirable in order to be able to enjoy the harmonic writing of the pieces that rely on the resonance the chords create, and most especially in the unmeasured Preludes, Couperin’s Tombeau de M.r de Blancrocher and the transcriptions of lute pieces by Mesangeau and Pinel. In some of the quicker dances too I found that it was not necessary to play fast, but found it far more charming to allow for more time in order not to confuse harmonies and to be able to bring out inner voices and part-writing, again because of the resonance.

Yet no brilliance is lost; on the contrary, if the melody is not moving too rapidly it is a fine opportunity for the performer to increase their inventiveness and introduce richer and faster ornamentation.

Le Gallois’s (1680) record of performance techniques used by harpsichordists in France in the second half of the seventeenth century comes when the writing of the clavicenistes had become extremely sophisticated and the instruments they played highly refined and responsive to compositional demands: Various styles, or better, different methods of playing, singing, and composing can exist among musicians; each has its rules and its admirers. There is no better example of this than is afforded by the harpsichord, because of all instruments it is the most perfect.

The “various styles” referred to can be fairly easily identified; Le Gallois considers Chambonnières and Louis Couperin to be at the head, respectively, of two quite distinct schools of composing; Chambonnières

was considered to use “natural, tender, and well-turned melodies”, while Couperin’s playing style was “full of chords and enriched with fine dissonances, with structural niceties, and with imitation.”

The “various methods” of playing that Le Gallois refers to are more difficult to establish, as they concern the style and touch of the performers rather than the structure of the composition and its embellishment. He goes on to portray Chambonnières’ performing technique: He had a delicacy of hand that others lacked; so that if he played a chord, and another imitated him by doing the same thing, one would perceive nonetheless a great difference; and the reason is, as I have said, that he had a dexterity and a way of applying his fingers to the keys which was unknown to others.

Le Gallois specifies that it was the way that Chambonnières “applied his fingers to the keys” that determined the sound that distinguished him from others, suggesting that he was able to create a particular sonority specifically through his use of touch; it is not simply a description of timing between notes or arpeggiation, although these would indeed have been part of the final result. Certainly the quality and quantity of the ornamentation a harpsichordist is able to add is not limited to their improvisatory skills, melodic inventiveness and knowledge of the style; the technical capacities and the agility of the performer, which are in turn conditioned by the responsiveness of the instrument, is of equal importance. Le Gallois, on the importance of perfection in the execution of ornaments, remarks on trills: [Their] trills are often too hurried and consequently very rough, being produced with too much energy; that they are beaten unevenly and poorly sustained, which deprives them [the players] of the finest ornament to playing, since there is nothing that embellishes it more nor which shows it off better than to beat trills evenly and sustain them well.

7 English Menu The keyboard of the Denis harpsichord of 1658 is not original, having been replaced at the beginning of the 20th century, so we cannot know whether the weight of the keys and the balance point are exactly as they were originally; the size of the keys is most probably accurate. These are three crucial components that determine the rapidity with which the instrument is able to respond; certainly the smallness of the keyboard and its lightness invite the hand to include trills within the phrase with great ease. If notes are repeated too quickly, however, the instruments does not respond well; slow trills, on the contrary, sound magnificent.

Le Gallois again: Although both [Chambonnières and Couperin] in common have excelled in their art and, perhaps better than any other, have understood its rules, it is certain, nevertheless, that they had two styles of playing whose different characteristics have given reason to say that the one touched the heart and the other touched the ear, that is, in a word, that they gave pleasure, but gave it differently, because of the different beauties of their styles of playing.

I have tried, in this recording, to recreate and propose a style of playing which was transmitted aurally from master to pupil, where the agreméns are influenced by

a knowledge of the style, are guided by bon goût and, ultimately, are governed by the immediate response of the harpsichord whilst playing. The Louis Denis harpsichord of 1658 is the extraordinary protagonist of this recording; the instrument is outstanding for the quality of its craftmanship, the beauty of its sound, and its historical significance. Performing this music on a historical harpsichord built in the same years, and in the same place, as the music performed has allowed me to investigate the expressive capacities of the instrument, permitting an exploration of different types of touch and addressing the question of text and ornamentation, ultimately allowing the instrument to greatly influence performance choices.

To succeed in this style, one has to be very knowledgeable in music, play with one’s head, and be completely in control, which is difficult, not to say impossible. (Le Gallois)

Hearing this music through the voice of the Denis harpsichord reveals the sound world in which these pieces belong and should be understood.

Le manuscrit Bauyn et la naissance de l'école française de clavecin Le manuscrit Bauyn Le manuscrit Bauyn est conservé à la Bibliothèque nationale de France, à Paris (Vm 7, 1852, f.60). Cette très importante source de musique de clavecin du XVIIe siècle contient aussi un peu de musique d’orgue et quelques pièces pour violes ; le volume comprend des œuvres de certains des plus grands clavecinistes actifs à Paris dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle : Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, Louis Couperin, Jacques Hardel, Jean Henry d’Anglebert, Johann Jakob Froberger, parmi d’autres auteurs moins connus.

On ne sait pas à qui appartenait le manuscrit, bien que de récentes études sur les armoiries estampées sur la couverture laissent à penser qu’il fut offert en cadeau de noces à la mariée. On ne sait pas non plus exactement quand le manuscrit fut compilé ; les recherches sur l’encre et le papier semblent indiquer qu’il fut noté entre 1690 et 1706, bien que l’essentiel de la musique ait été composé dans les années 1650, voire avant. Une explication possible de ce décalage entre les dates de compilation et de composition est l’« intention manifeste de préserver la musique de clavecin qui circulait en manuscrit parmi les connaisseurs dans le Paris du milieu de XVIIe siècle. Les premières années du règne de Louis XIV [...] sont des années où la musique de clavecin française, dominée par Chambonnières, s’est épanouie. Dans les années 1690, on cherchait à préserver la musique de cet âge d’or ; et dans ces années 1690 il y avait un commerce musical capable de répondre à cet intérêt » (Gustafson, 2014).

La musique préservée dans le manuscrit Bauyn reflète toute la diversité des styles qui ont influencé à la fois la composition et l’exécution de la musique de cla-

vecin au milieu du XVIIe siècle ; des transcriptions de célèbres pièces françaises pour luth de Mesangeau et Pinel sont copiées au côté de toccatas de Froberger, qui s’inscrivent dans la tradition de l’école de clavier italienne. Il est fascinant d’entendre ces pièces comme un recueil ; on découvre alors l’influence de ces diverses écoles sur l’écriture des premiers grands clavecinistes, Chambonnières et Louis Couperin.

Le texte Les textes musicaux du manuscrit Bauyn, comparés aux autres sources manuscrites contemporaines de la même musique, sont, dans l’ensemble, relativement peu ornés ; les ornements sont peu nombreux, et parfois les voix médianes ne sont pas entièrement notées ; dans l’exécution, il est tentant de compléter les formules musicales traditionnelles, telles les cadences. Le texte de Bauyn demande donc à l’interprète d’ajouter des ornements, de la manière décrite par Saint-Lambert dans Les Principes du clavecin (Paris, 1702) : On est extrêmement libre sur le choix des Agrémens ; & dans les Piéces qu’on étudie, on peut en faire aux endroits même où ils ne sont pas marquez ; retrancher ceux qui y sont, si l’on trouve qu’ils ne siént pas bien à la Piéce, & y en ajoûter d’autres à son gré.

L’ornementation peut aussi, bien sûr, être variée davantage lors des nombreuses reprises ; le commanditaire et le récipiendaire de ce manuscrit devaient tous deux être des clavecinistes exceptionnels.

Le Gallois (Paris, 1680) décrit la diversité et l’étendue de l’ornementation qui avait fait la renommée de Chambonnières :

10 Toutes les fois qu’il [Chambonnières] joüoit une piece il y méloit de nouvelles beautés par des ports de voix, des passages, & des agrémens differens, avec des doubles cadences. Enfin il les diversifioit tellement par toutes ces beautez differentes qu’il y faisoit toûjours trouver de nouvelles graces.

Chambonnières enrichissait son écriture en variant ses pièces à chaque exécution ; la mode que ce grand maître contribua tant à établir influença profondément la génération suivante de clavecinistes, dont beaucoup furent ses élèves. On peut raisonnablement penser que les œuvres écrites par les clavecinistes de son cercle doivent également se jouer avec la même richesse d’invention et d’élaboration ornementale.

Paradoxalement, ces pièces furent copiées dans le manuscrit Bauyn à une époque où les compositeurs commençaient à se préoccuper de la manière dont leur œuvre était jouée et diffusée. Chambonnières est parmi les premiers compositeurs à essayer d’affirmer plus explicitement l’intention du compositeur dans la partition et de restreindre toute improvisation non autorisée de l’exécutant aux dépens du compositeur ; dans les premier livre de ses Pièces de clavecin, publié en 1670, il pose le problème du nombre de « copies Infideles » de ses œuvres qui circulaient : Ce pendant les avis que je recois de differens lieux quil s’en fait un espece de commerce presque dans toutes les villes du monde, ou l’on a la connoissance du Clavessin, par les copies que l’on en distribue quoy qu’avec beacoup de deffauts et ainsi fort a mon prejudice ; m’ont fait croire, que je devois donner volontairement ce que l’on m’otoit avec violence & que je devois mettre au jour moy méme ce que d’autres y avoient desja mis a demy pour moy ; puis qu’aussi bien les donnant avec tous leurs agreements comme je fais en ce recueil ; elles seront sans doute, et plus utiles au public & plus honorables pour moi, que toutes ces copies Infideles, qui paroissent sous mon nom.

Il est intéressant de noter que Froberger affirmait

lui aussi que nul n’était capable d’exécuter ses pièces sans l’avoir entendu lui-même les jouer d’abord, et on dit que c’est pour cette raison qu’il empêcha la diffusion d’une partie de sa musique.

L’improvisation est une forme d’art subtile et régie par des règles ; sous les doigts de ceux qui n’ont pas la subtilité requise ou l’intelligence de ces règles, elle devient un abus. La musique de clavecin française après Bauyn emploie l’une des notations les plus prescriptives de la période baroque ; dans la musique imprimée de Chambonnières, d’Anglebert et, ensuite, François Couperin (pour ne citer que les premiers), chaque nuance, chaque ornement est noté avec une précision croissante, et les « tables des agrémens » sont souvent précédées d’un avertissement disant que les ornements doivent se jouer exactement tels qu’ils sont écrits et uniquement là où ils sont notés.

Cependant, si la partition ne livre pas suffisamment d’indications pour permettre à l’interprète de rendre justice à son potentiel, comme c’est le cas avec le manuscrit Bauyn, alors l’instrument que l’exécutant de l’époque aurait pu avoir à sa disposition peut contribuer à suggérer des manières dont les clavecinistes contemporains auraient tiré parti de ses caractéristiques pour mieux servir la musique. Les témoignages d’exécutants de l’époque peuvent eux aussi aider à comprendre d’autres aspects de l’interprétation.

Instrument et interprétation L’instrument utilisé pour cet enregistrement a été fait à Paris en 1658 par Louis Denis. C’est un clavecin de l’un des meilleurs facteurs français, qui cherchait des qualités et des propriétés autres que celles mises en avant par des facteurs plus célèbres comme Ruckers, et il n’a pas été transformé – ravalé – par des facteurs

11 Français français ultérieurs comme l’ont été tant d’instruments du XVIIe siècle. C’est aussi l’un des plus anciens instruments à deux claviers à nous être parvenus en état de jeu et, en tant que tel, un témoignage rare et important sur un type spécifique d’instrument et de sonorité.

Les qualités sonores du clavecin ont considérablement affecté ma compréhension de ce répertoire et influencé bon nombre de mes choix d’interprète. Sans aucun doute, le trait le plus frappant du clavecin Denis, et l’une des principales caractéristiques qui le distinguent d’autres instruments, est sa sonorité : le son reste constamment plein, présent et riche pendant un temps étonnamment long. J’ai été particulièrement surprise de voir que je mettais sensiblement plus de temps à jouer une œuvre que sur d’autres clavecins : c’était extrêmement souhaitable pour pouvoir savourer l’écriture harmonique des pièces qui reposent sur la résonance que créent les accords, surtout dans les préludes non mesurés, le Tombeau de M.r de Blancrocher de Louis Couperin et les transcriptions de pièces pour luth de Mesangeau et de Pinel. Dans certaines des danses plus rapides, je trouvais aussi qu’il n’était pas nécessaire de jouer vite et qu’il était bien plus intéressant de prendre davantage de temps pour éviter de rendre les harmonies confuses et pouvoir faire ressortir les voix médianes et la polyphonie, de nouveau en raison de la résonance. Aucun brillant n’est cependant perdu ; au contraire, si la mélodie n’avance pas trop rapidement, c’est une belle occasion pour l’interprète d’accroître son invention et d’introduire une ornementation plus riche et plus rapide.

Le témoignage de Le Gallois (1680) sur les techniques d’exécution utilisées par les clavecinistes en France dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle arrivait au moment où leur écriture était devenue extrêmement sub-

tile, et les instruments qu’ils jouaient hautement raffinés, répondant aux exigences des compositeurs : Il peut y avoir divers styles, ou pour mieux dire differentes methodes de joüer, de chanter, & de composer parmy les Musiciens, qui toutes ont leurs regles & leurs approbateurs. Et c’est ce que nous ne pouvons mieux confirmer que par l’exemple du Clavessin ; parce que c’est l’instrument de tous le plus parfait.

Les « divers styles » auxquels il fait allusion sont relativement faciles à identifier ; Le Gallois considère que Chambonnières et Louis Couperin sont à la tête de deux écoles de composition très distinctes : selon lui, Chambonnières employait dans ses pièces « des chants naturels, tendres, & bien tournez », tandis que la manière de Couperin était « pleine d’accords, & enrichie de belles dissonances, de dessein, & d’imitation ».

Les « differentes methodes de joüer » qu’évoque Le Gallois sont plus difficiles à cerner, car elles renvoient au style et au toucher des clavecinistes plutôt qu’à la structure de la composition et à son ornementation. Il décrit ainsi la « maniere de joüer » de Chambonnières : Il avoit une delicatesse de main que les autres n’avoient pas ; de sorte que s’il faisoit un accord, qu’un autre en même temps eût imité en faisant la même chose, on y trouvoit neanmoins une grande difference ; & la raison en est, comme j’ay dit, qu’il avoit une adresse & une maniere d’appliquer les doigts sur les touches qui estoit inconnuë aux autres.

Le Gallois précise que c’est sa « maniere d’appliquer les doigts sur les touches » qui déterminait la sonorité de Chambonnières et le distinguait des autres, laissant entendre qu’il était capable de produire une sonorité particulière par son seul toucher ; cela ne tient pas simplement à l’articulation entre les notes ou à l’arpègement, encore que ces éléments fassent certainement partie du résultat final. La qualité et la quantité d’orne-

12 Menu ments qu’un claveciniste est capable d’ajouter ne sont certainement pas limitées par son talent d’improvisateur, son invention mélodique et sa connaissance du style ; les capacités techniques et l’agilité de l’interprète, à leur tour conditionnées par la sensibilité de l’instrument, sont non moins importantes. Le Gallois, soulignant l’exigence de perfection dans l’exécution des ornements, note à propos des cadences ou tremblements : [Leurs] cadences sont souvent tres-pressées, & par consequent tres-rudes, estant produites par un trop grand feu : qu’elles sont battuës inégalement, & mal soûtenuës ; ce qui les prive de l’agrement le plus beau qu’il y ait dans le jeu ; puis qu’il n’y a rien qui l’embellisse plus, ny qui le fasse paroitre d’avantage que de battre également & de bien soûtenir.

Le clavier du clavecin Denis de 1658 n’est pas original, ayant été remplacé au début du XXe siècle, et on ne peut donc savoir si le poids des touches et le point d’appui sont exactement tels qu’ils étaient à l’origine ; la taille des touches est sans doute exacte. Ce sont trois éléments cruciaux qui déterminent la rapidité avec laquelle l’instrument est capable de répondre ; l’étroitesse du clavier et sa légèreté invitent certainement la main à introduire des tremblements avec une grande aisance dans la phrase. Si les notes sont répétées trop rapidement, toutefois, l’instrument ne répond pas bien ; les tremblements lents, en revanche, sonnent magnifiquement.

Le Gallois encore : Car encore que tout deux [Chambonnières et Couperin] ayent en cela de commun d’exceller dans leur Art, & d’en avoir peut-être mieux que pas un autre connu les regles, il est certain neanmoins qu’ils avoit deux jeux dont les differens caracteres ont donné lieu de dire que l’un touchoit le cœur, & l’autre touchoit l’oreille ; c’est à dire en un mot qu’ils plaisoient, mais qu’ils plaisoient diversement, à cause des differentes beautez de leurs manieres de joüer.

J’ai essayé dans cet enregistrement de récréer et de proposer un style de jeu qui était transmis oralement de maître à élève, où les agréments sont influencés par une connaissance du style, guidés par le bon goût et, en fin de compte, régis par la réponse immédiate du clavecin quand il est joué. Le clavecin Louis Denis de 1658 est l’extraordinaire protagoniste de cet enregistrement ; l’instrument est exceptionnel pour la qualité de sa facture, la beauté de sa sonorité et son importance historique. Jouer la musique sur un instrument historique fabriqué dans les mêmes années et au même endroit où la musique fut composée m’a permis d’étudier les capacités expressives de l’instrument et d’explorer différents types de toucher et différentes manières d’aborder la question du texte et de l’ornementation, laissant en fin de compte l’instrument influencer considérablement les choix interprétatifs.

Pour reüssir dans ce jeu il faut estre tres-sçavant dans la musique, y joüer de tête, & se posseder parfaittement ; ce qui est tres difficile, pour ne pas dire impossible. (Le Gallois)

Entendre cette musique à travers la voix du clavecin Denis nous révèle le monde sonore monde sonore auquel appartiennent ces pièces et dans lequel il faut les comprendre.

IL CUORE E L’ORECCHIO:

il manoscritto Bauyn e gli albori della scuola cembalistica francese Il manoscritto Bauyn Il manoscritto Bauyn è conservato presso la Bibliothèque Nationale di Parigi (Vm 7, 1852, f.60); è una delle fonti più importanti di musica per clavicembalo del Seicento (comprende anche alcuni brani per organo e per viole da gamba). Il volume raccoglie le opere di alcuni dei più grandi clavecinistes attivi a Parigi nella seconda metà del XVII secolo: Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, Louis Couperin, Jacques Hardel, Jean Henry d’Anglebert, Johann Jakob Froberger e altri autori meno conosciuti.

Non è noto a chi appartenesse il manoscritto, sebbene recenti studi sullo stemma araldico riportato sulla copertina fanno supporre che si possa trattare di un regalo di nozze per la sposa. È anche difficile definire con esattezza quando è stato compilato il manoscritto: le analisi dell’inchiostro e della carta hanno portato all’ipotesi che sia stato scritto tra il 1690 e il 1706, anche se la maggior parte della musica è stata composta intorno all’anno 1650 o anche prima. Una possibile spiegazione di questa discrepanza tra la data di compilazione e il contenuto è “l’intenzione evidente di voler conservare la musica per clavicembalo che circolava tra intenditori in versioni manoscritte verso la metà del XVII secolo, a Parigi. I primi anni del regno di Luigi XIV [...] erano anni in cui la musica francese per clavicembalo, dominata da Chambonnières, era fiorita. Nel 1690 c’era interesse a conservare la musica di questa epoca d’oro: e nel 1690 c’era un commercio musicale in grado di rispondere a questo interesse” (Gustafson, 2014).

La musica conservata nel manoscritto Bauyn mostra tutta la varietà di stili che hanno influenzato sia la com-

posizione che l’esecuzione della musica per clavicembalo della metà del XVII secolo: trascrizioni di Mesangeau e Pinel, che rappresentano la più alta scuola francese per liuto, sono copiate accanto alle Toccate di Froberger, che derivano invece dalla scuola tastieristica italiana. È affascinante ascoltare questi brani come una collezione; ci consente di sentir evolvere le caratteristiche delle varie scuole compositive nelle pagine dei primi grandi clavecinistes: Chambonnières e Louis Couperin.

Il testo Il testo musicale del manoscritto Bauyn è, nel complesso, relativamente semplice rispetto ad altre fonti manoscritte contemporanee della stessa musica: ci sono pochi ornamenti, a volte le voci interne non sono scritte per esteso e, nell’esecuzione di questi brani, si è tentati di riempire alcune formule musicali (per esempio, le cadenze). Il testo del manoscritto Bauyn, dunque, richiede che l’esecutore aggiunga abbellimenti, proprio come descrive Saint-Lambert nel suo Les principes du clavecin (Parigi, 1702): L’esecutore è estremamente libero nella scelta degli agrémens. Nei brani che studia, egli li potrà mettere in punti dove non sono indicati, potrà togliere quelli che ci sono se non sono di suo gradimento, e potrà aggiungerne altri a suo piacimento.

L’ornamentazione può essere poi variata ulteriormente nelle ripetizioni; sia il committente che il destinatario di questo testo devono essere stati interpeti notevoli.

Le Gallois (Parigi, 1680) descrive la varietà e la quantità di ornamentazione che usava Chambonnières e che lo ha reso celebre:

14 Ogni volta che Chambonnières suonava un brano, aggiungeva nuove bellezze come ports de voix, passaggi, e abbellimenti diversi, anche con cadenze doppie. Alla fine diversificava talmente tanto con tutte queste differenti bellezze che riusciva sempre a trovare una nuova grazia.

Chambonnières dunque arricchiva ciò che scriveva variando i suoi pezzi ad ogni esecuzione; lui era indubbiamente un grande maestro, e questa moda che ha contribuito a stabilire avrà profondamente influenzato anche la generazione successiva di cembalisti, molti dei quali erano suoi allievi. È ragionevole supporre che le opere scritte dai clavecinistes della sua cerchia dovrebbero anche loro essere eseguite con la stessa ricchezza di invenzione e elaborazione.

Paradossalmente però questi brani sono stati copiati nel manoscritto Bauyn in un momento in cui i compositori stavano cominciando ad affrontare il modo in cui la loro musica veniva scritta, eseguita e diffusa. Chambonnières infatti è tra i primi compositori che hanno tentato di affermare in modo più esplicito l’intenzione del compositore all’interno della partitura, cercando di limitare l’improvvisazione non autorizzata da parte dell’esecutore a spese del compositore; nel primo libro dei suoi Pièces de clavecin, pubblicato nel 1670, Chambonnières fa cenno al problema del numero di copie “infedeli” del suo lavoro già in circolazione: Visto che, tuttavia, mi è stato detto da più parti che si fa commercio [della mia musica] in quasi tutte le città del mondo dove si conosce il clavicembalo, usando copie che circolano, benché questi abbiano tanti errori, e fanno un gran danno alla mia reputazione; questo mi ha fatto pensare che dovrei dare volontariamente ciò che mi era stato tolto con la violenza, e che dovevo portare alla luce questo stesso lavoro che altri avevano già fatto, a metà, per me. E visto che segno tutti gli abbellimenti, come nella presente raccolta, senza dubbio sarà più utile per il pubblico, e sarà più onorevole per me, che tutte queste copie infedeli che appaiono sotto il mio nome.

È interessante notare che anche Froberger, negli stessi anni, aveva affermato che nessuno era in grado di suonare i suoi brani se non li avesse prima sentiti eseguiti da lui stesso; e questa è forse la ragione per cui ha addirittura trattenuto alcune delle sue opere dalla diffusione.

L’improvvisazione è una forma d’arte sottile e regolamentata; nelle mani di coloro che non comprendono le regole o che mancano di raffinatezza può diventare un abuso. Forse per questo la musica per clavicembalo pubblicata in Francia post-Bauyn è un’esempio di un tipo di notazione prescrittiva, tra le più precise ed esigenti in uso durante il periodo barocco: nella musica a stampa di Chambonnières, d’Anglebert e, più tardi, di François Couperin (giusto per nominare i primi), ogni ornamento, ogni sfumatura interpretativa viene annotata con precisione sempre maggiore e le tables des agrémens vengono spesso precedute da un avvertimento che gli ornamenti devono essere eseguiti esclusivamente dove sono segnati ed esattamente come sono scritti.

Tuttavia, quando la partitura non fornisce informazioni sufficienti per consentire all’esecutore di sfruttare appieno tutte le sue potenzialità, come nel caso del manoscritto Bauyn, allora lo strumento che un esecutore del tempo avrebbe avuto a disposizione può aiutare a suggerire modi in cui i clavicembalisti contemporanei avrebbero potuto approfittare delle sue caratteristiche per eseguire al meglio la musica. Anche le testimonianze degli esecutori del tempo possono aiutare a comprendere altri aspetti dell’interpretazione.

Strumento ed esecuzione Il clavicembalo utilizzato per questa registrazione fu costruito a Parigi nel 1658 da Louis Denis. È un clavicembalo francese di uno dei più illustri costruttori fran-

15 Italiano cesi, che ha voluto e che ha ricercato nello strumento proprietà e qualità diverse da quelle enfatizzate da più celebri cembalari come Ruckers; inoltre, cosa rara, lo strumento non è stato modificato (ravalé) da successivi costruttori, come furono invece tanti strumenti francesi più antichi durante il corso del XVIII secolo. Il clavicembalo di Denis si può vantare anche di essere uno dei più antichi clavicembali francesi a due tastiere giunti fino a noi in condizioni suonabili e, di conseguenza, è una testimonianza rara e importante di un particolare tipo di strumento e del suo suono.

La qualità del suono di questo clavicembalo ha influenzato enormemente la mia percezione di questo repertorio ed è stata decisiva in molte scelte interpretative. Senza dubbio la caratteristica più cospicua del clavicembalo di Denis e una delle caratteristiche principali che lo distinguono dagli altri strumenti è la sonorità: il suono rimane costantemente pieno, presente e ricco per un tempo incredibilmente lungo. Sono stata particolarmente sorpresa di trovarmi a prendere molto più tempo per suonare un brano di quanto non avessi fatto su altri clavicembali; questo era di gran lunga preferibile per poter godere appieno della scrittura armonica dei pezzi che si affidano alla risonanza che gli accordi creano, e soprattutto nei Preludi non misurati, il Tombeau de M.r de Blancrocher di Couperin e le trascrizioni delle Sarabande per liuto di Mesangeau e Pinel. Anche in alcune delle danze più veloci ho preferito comunque adottare un tempo non troppo spinto, in modo da non confondere armonie e per poter far risaltare le voci interne il più possibile. Tuttavia, così non si perde certo di vivacità; anzi, quando la melodia non è troppo rapida questa è un’ottima opportunità per l’esecutore di aumentare la propria inventiva e introdurre ornamenti sempre più ricchi e più veloci.

La testimonianza di Le Gallois (1680) sulle tecniche di esecuzione usate dai clavicembalisti in Francia nella seconda metà del XVII secolo arriva quando la scrittura per clavicembalo era diventata decisamente sofisticata e gli strumenti che suonavano erano estremamente raffinati, rispondendo alla perfezione alle esigenze compositive: Vari stili, o meglio, diversi metodi di suonare, cantare e comporre possono esistere tra i musicisti; ognuna ha le sue regole e i suoi ammiratori. Non esiste un esempio migliore di quello offerto dal clavicembalo, perché di tutti gli strumenti è il più perfetto.

I “diversi stili” di cui Le Gallois parla possono essere facilmente identificati: egli descrive Chambonnières e Louis Couperin rispettivamente come i capi di due scuole compositive ben distinte. Dice che Chambonnières usava “melodie naturali, tenere, e ben curate”, mentre lo stile di Couperin era “pieno di accordi e arricchito di belle dissonanze, con bellezza strutturale e imitazione”.

I “diversi metodi” di suonare alla quale si riferisce Le Gallois sono più difficili da stabilire, in quanto riguardano lo stile e il tocco degli esecutori piuttosto che la struttura della composizione e il modo di abbellirla. Egli descrive così la tecnica esecutiva di Chambonnières: Aveva una delicatezza di mano che agli altri [cembalisti] mancava; così che quando suonava un accordo, e poi un altro lo imitava facendo la stessa cosa, si percepiva comunque una grande differenza; e la ragione è, come ho detto, che aveva una destrezza e un modo di applicare le dita ai tasti che era sconosciuto agli altri.

Le Gallois specifica che è il modo di Chambonnières di “applicare le dita ai tasti” che determinavano il suono che lo distingueva dagli altri; l’implicazione è che fosse in grado di creare una particolare sonorità esclsivamente attraverso il suo uso del tocco; non è semplicemente una descrizione della sincronia tra la mano

16 Menu destra e la mano sinistra, oppure l’uso di un arpeggio, anche se questi accorgimenti sarebbero stati effettivamente parte del risultato finale. Certamente la qualità e la quantità di abbellimenti che un clavicembalista è in grado di aggiungere non è limitata alla sua abilità di improvvisazione, inventiva melodica e conoscenza dello stile; le capacità tecniche e l’agilità dell’esecutore, che a sua volta sono condizionate dalla reattività dello strumento, sono di uguale importanza. Le Gallois, sull’importanza della perfezione nell’esecuzione degli abbellimenti, commenta sui trilli: I trilli sono spesso troppo frettolosi e di conseguenza molto ruvidi, essendo prodotti con troppa energia; così che vengono battuti in modo irregolare e poco sostenuto, privando [i suonatori] del più bell’ornamento nel suonare, in quanto non c’è niente che abbellisca più e che lo dimostri meglio che battere i trilli in modo uniforme e sostenerli bene.

La tastiera del clavicembalo di Denis del 1658 non è originale (fu sostituita all’inizio del XX secolo), quindi non possiamo sapere quanto il peso dei tasti e il punto di equilibrio siano simili a come erano originalmente; mentre la dimensione di tasti è molto probabilmente giusta. Questi sono i tre fattori fondamentali che determinano la rapidità con cui lo strumento è in grado di rispondere; certamente le dimensioni piccole della tastiera e la sua leggerezza invitano la mano a includere trilli all’interno della frase con grande facilità. Se le note vengono ripetute troppo rapidamente, tuttavia, lo strumento non reagisce bene; i trilli lenti, al contrario, suonano in maniera splendida.

Le Gallois conclude la sua testimonianza dicendo: Benché entrambi [Chambonnières e Couperin] in comune abbiano eccelso nella loro arte e, forse meglio di chiunque altro, ne abbia compreso le regole, è certo che hanno due stili di suonare le cui diverse caratteristiche hanno dato motivo di dire che uno toccava il cuore e l’altro toccava

l’orecchio, cioè, in una parola, che davano piacere, ma lo davano diversamente, per via delle diverse bellezze del loro stile di suonare.

Ho cercato, in questa registrazione, di ricreare e proporre uno stile esecutivo che, storicamente, veniva trasmesso direttamente dal maestro all’allievo, dove gli abbellimenti sono influenzati da una solida conoscenza dello stile, sono guidati dal buon gusto e, soprattutto, sono governati dalla risposta immediata che il clavicembalo può rendere durante l’esecuzione.

Il clavicembalo di Louis Denis del 1658 è lo straordinario protagonista di questa registrazione; lo strumento è eccezionale non solo per la sua importanza storica, ma proprio per la qualità di fattura e la bellezza del suono.

Eseguire questa musica su un clavicembalo storico costruito negli stessi anni e nello stesso luogo in cui veniva composta la musica mi ha permesso di indagare sulle capacità espressive dello strumento; mi ha portato a un’esplorazione dei diversi tipi di tocco e i loro diversi effetti; infine ho lasciato che fosse lo strumento stesso ad influire sulle scelte esecutive.

Per avere successo in questo stile, bisogna essere molto esperto nella musica, suonare con la testa ed avere una padronanza assoluta; il che è difficile, per non dire impossibile. (Le Gallois)

Ascoltare questa musica attraverso la voce del clavicembalo di Denis rivela il mondo sonoro a cui questo repertorio appartiene e deve essere compresa.
