DALMATICA From oral to written transmission: chants of the Adriatic The dalmatica, a medieval garment used by both men and women, is mostly known as a liturgical vestment, typical for the Byzantine clergy. As a symbolic link between the Byzantine and Roman liturgical traditions, as a bridge between men’s and women’s clothing, it served as an inspiration for the creation of this project in which the four female singers of Dialogos are joined by six traditional cantors from Croatia to explore the richness of Dalmatian liturgical musical traditions since the Middle Ages. From Christmas to Easter, they follow the main liturgical celebrations and create a soundscape composed by learned and traditional chants, in the Latin and Slavonic languages.

In many Croatian regions, the Roman Catholic services were traditionally performed, since medieval times, in the Old Slavonic and Old Croatian (šćavet) languages in addition to the official Latin. Glagolitic chant, the common term for this type of sacred music, was mostly orally transmitted during the last ten centuries as a distinctive feature of Roman Catholic liturgical chant in Croatia. It is still preserved in some coastal, insular and hinterland communities of Croatia, where it is regularly performed through the entire liturgical year, reaching its culmination in the Christmas and Lenten seasons, particularly during Holy Week.

The two distinct groups of singers in this programme explore pieces from the mass and office liturgy, as well as rituals conserved in popular belief. We chose rare pieces to represent traditions of this country which enjoyed a very special “double status” in the Roman church, since Croatian priests were allowed to celebrate the liturgy in the church Slavonic language in regions where it was already customary. In that way, the Dalmatian coast of Croatia and

the islands lived in a double, bilingual liturgical tradition: Latin and Glagolitic. Liturgical books which survive from medieval Croatia also bear witness to this double tradition: next to the beautiful calligraphy of manuscripts written in Beneventan notation which came from Southern Italy, we find other sources in Glagolitic script used in Croatia.

Between genealogies, announcements of movable feasts and acclamations, Latin chants are performed mostly by the four singers of Dialogos, while the Glagolitic chants are sung by the six cantors from Croatia, creating a rich sound fresco.

The Dialogos vocalists perform some rare gems conserved in Croatian Latin manuscripts, some of them coming from the female monastic world. We sing a polyphonic reading for Christmas Matins, coming from the continental tradition of Croatia, along with a number of pieces coming from various manuscripts copied in the monasteries of the Dalmatian coast. One of the most important witnesses to archaic medieval Latin polyphony is the troped Sancus from the female Benedictine monastery in Zadar, showing a dissonant, rough musical universe, so different from the suave Tota pulchra es, Maria, copied some centuries later in the Franciscan monastery of the same city. A fragmentary parchment leaf in Zadar (with the responsory Ante sex dies, bonus track on the online version of this CD) shows yet another musical tradition, imported from Southern Italy: Beneventan chant. The same Beneventan tradition in Dalmatia is also conserved in the famous Dubrovnik missal (with the Good Friday antiphon for the adoration of the cross, Crucem tuam). From the Dalmatian town of Trogir, two sources represent the Latin and Croatian traditions:

The two sides of this programme open like two perspectives on one reality and some of the pieces serve literally as mirrors to each other, sometimes even overlapping in order to immerse the audience into an almost “live” liturgical situation. The songs Bog se rodi v Vitliomi and Svit se konca both come from a 14th century collection of poems in the Old Slavonic language (the so-called “Paris songbook”).

The first of them survived as a traditional song on the island of Rab, and the second one serves as the basis for a melodic reconstruction for a song about the end of the world.

The vocal ensemble Kantaduri performs a selection of sacred, liturgical and paraliturgical chants originating from the local traditions (urban and rural) of coastal, insular and hinterland regions of Croatia. The repertoire of the Kantaduri singers explores the diversity of regional approaches to liturgical chant through the specifics of local repertories. Their singing offers a glimpse of distinct chant traditions juxtaposed. Examples of the most archaic singing styles presented are O, Bog se rodo, Vitlijanjo, collected in Supetarska Draga (Island of Rab, first known from the already mentioned Paris songbook), štrofa from the procession Za križen, collected in Vrbanj (Island of Hvar), and kantanje from the procession of Holy Friday, collected in Zagvozd (Dalmatian hinterland). The examples from the Zadar region (both islands and hinterland) and Neretva valley region belong to the older tradition that is characterized by fifth endings (pjevanje na bas).

The rest of the musical examples correspond to more recent traditional singing styles, modified under the influence of the dominant traditional style called klapa singing.

A surprising variety of musical styles and nuances opens

up to modern listeners, hinting at a subtle (and almost ironic) question about the attempt to reconstruct an “authentic” sound of historic liturgical music from any locality: these highly virtuosic songs and chants of Glagolitic and Latin tradition come from neighbouring cities or villages or even from the same place. Their vocal and musical styles bear witness to extremely striking differences, typical also for other localities in Croatia. The process of the transmission of melodies from father to son demonstrates a very detailed accuracy concerning every characteristic of text articulation, tuning and ornamentation. If we were to reconstruct a medieval singing tradition from the city of Zadar, which of the styles would we take as a model, if for our work we would only have access to a written document coming from the main parish church of the city?

Musical traditions of the past seem to be composed of much more delicate and various threads than we expect, which sometimes escape our analytical attempts, just as the sensibility of living cantors escapes the written records of the rare conserved manuscripts. As the Byzantines didn’t hesitate to sew different pearls and gemstones on their dalmaticas, so our two groups of vocalists weave a dalmatica glowing in a variety of liturgical and devotional languages from medieval Croatia.

DALMATICA De l’oral à l’écrit : chants sacrés de l’Adriatique La dalmatique, vêtement médiéval porté tant par les hommes que par les femmes, fut également un habit sacerdotal, typique du clergé byzantin. Faisant symboliquement le lien entre les traditions liturgiques byzantine et romaine, jetant un pont entre les habillements masculin et féminin, elle a servi d’inspiration à ce projet où six chantres traditionnels de Croatie se joignent aux quatre chanteuses de Dialogos pour explorer les richesses du répertoire musical liturgique dalmate depuis le Moyen Âge. De Noël à Pâques, les principales fêtes liturgiques nous ont permis de créer tout un paysage sonore fait de chants savants et traditionnels, en langue latine ou slavonne.

Dans bien des régions de Croatie, l’office catholique romain se déroulait depuis l’époque médiévale non seulement en latin, mais aussi en slavon et en croate (šćavet).

Au cours des dix derniers siècles, le chant glagolitique fut le plus souvent transmis oralement. Certaines communautés croates du littoral, des îles ou de l’arrière-pays, le pratiquent encore tout au long de l’année liturgique, avec pour temps forts Noël, le Carême, et en particulier la Semaine Sainte.

Les deux ensembles explorent le répertoire de la messe ou de l’office, ainsi que divers rituels de la croyance populaire. Ces pièces rares illustrent les traditions de ce pays qui jouissait d’un « double statut » au sein de l’Église romaine, les prêtres croates ayant été autorisés à célébrer la liturgie en langue slavonne dans les régions où l’on en avait déjà coutume. Le littoral dalmate et les îles connaissaient ainsi une tradition liturgique double, bilingue: latine et glagolitique. Les livres liturgiques en témoignent euxmêmes: la belle calligraphie des uns, en notation bénéven-

taine, issue d’Italie méridionale, voisine avec l’écriture glagolitique des autres. Entre les généalogies, annonces de fêtes mobiles et acclamations, les pièces latines sont généralement chantées par les quatre chanteuses de Dialogos, les chants glagolitiques étant interprétés par les six chantres croates, d’où cette riche fresque sonore.

Les voix de Dialogos font entendre quelques-unes des raretés conservées dans les manuscrits latins de Croatie, dont certains proviennent du monde monastique féminin.

Outre une lecture polyphonique pour les matines de Noël, qui appartient à la tradition continentale croate, nous chantons un certain nombre de pièces tirées de manuscrits copiés dans les monastères du littoral dalmate. L’un des meilleurs témoins de la polyphonie latine du Moyen-Âge est le Sanctus tropé du couvent bénédictin de Zadar, dissonant, âpre, bien différent du suave Tota pulchra es, Maria, copié quelques siècles plus tard au monastère franciscain de la même ville. Toujours à Zadar, un fragment de parchemin (avec le répons Ante sex dies, en bonus sur la version en ligne de ce CD) transmet une autre tradition musicale encore, importée d’Italie du Sud: le chant bénéventain. Le fameux missel de Dubrovnik en porte trace, lui aussi (avec Crucem tuam, antienne du Vendredi Saint pour l’adoration de la croix). La ville dalmate de Trogir nous a, quant à elle, livré deux sources illustrant les traditions latine et croate: une lecture de Noël (In principio erat Verbum) et un poignant monologue de Judas, au moment où il décide de se pendre (Govorenje Judino).

Les deux aspects de ce programme ne font que présenter une même réalité selon deux perspectives différentes, certaines pièces étant littéralement le reflet l’une

10 Menu de l’autre, parfois même en superposition sonore, pour immerger l’auditeur dans une situation liturgique presque réelle. Les chants O, Bog se rodo et Svit se konca, tirées toutes deux d’un recueil de poèmes du XIVe siècle en vieux slavon (le « recueil de Paris »). La première est un chant traditionnel de l’île de Rab, la seconde sert de base à une reconstruction mélodique pour un chant sur la fin du monde.

De son côté, l’ensemble vocal Kantaduri interprète un florilège de chants sacrés, liturgiques et paraliturgiques, appartenant aux traditions locales (urbaine et rurale) de la côte, des îles et de l’arrière-pays croates. Kantaduri explore les diverses approches régionales du chant liturgique et nous offre un tour d’horizon de ces traditions vocales. Les styles vocaux les plus archaïques se voient illustrés ici par O, Bog se rodo Vitlijanjo, de Supetarska Draga (île de Rab), Štrofa, chant processionnel du Jeudi Saint, de Vrbanj (île de Hvar), et Kantanje, chant processionnel du Vendredi Saint de Zagvozd (arrière-pays dalmate). Les pièces de la région de Zadar et de la vallée de Neretva relèvent, pour leur part, de l’ancienne tradition vocale caractérisée par des cadences en quinte.

Quant aux autres chants, ils répondent à des styles vocaux de tradition plus récente, où l’on note l’influence de la klapa, style traditionnel dominant.

L’auditeur d’aujourd’hui découvre ainsi une surprenante variété stylistique qui met en question notre recherche d’un son historique « authentique »: ces chants virtuoses, de tradition glagolitique ou latine, proviennent de localités voisines, voire de la même ville ou du même village.

Pourtant, leurs styles vocaux et musicaux font apparaître des différences parfois frappantes. La transmission des mélodies de père en fils se fait avec une précision scrupu-

leuse quant à l’articulation du texte, au tempérament et à l’ornementation. Si nous devions reconstruire la tradition du chant médiéval de Zadar, quel style prendrions-nous pour modèle si nous n’avions qu’un manuscrit de la cathédrale comme base de travail?

Les traditions musicales du passé sont semblables à un tissu comptant bien plus de fils délicats et variés qu’on ne l’aurait cru. Cette complexité échappe parfois à notre analyse, de même que la sensibilité des chantres vivants échappe aux traces écrites des rares manuscrits conservés. À l’image des Byzantins qui n’hésitaient guère à coudre de nombreuses perles et autres pierres précieuses sur leurs dalmatiques, nos deux groupes vocaux tissent une dalmatique ornée de toutes les langues sacrées de la Croatie médiévale.

DALMATICA Usmena i pisana predaja liturgijske glazbe južne Hrvatske Dalmatica, srednjovjekovna odora koju su nosile i žene i muškarci, poznata je uglavnom i kao liturgijsko ruho, tipično za bizantski kler. Simbolična veza između bizantske i rimske liturgijske tradicije, poput mosta između muških i ženskih odora, poslužila nam je kao inspiracija u stvaranju projekta u kojemu su se četiri pjevačice ansambla Dialogos udružile sa šest tradicijskih pjevača iz Hrvatske u istraživanju bogatstva dalmatinskog liturgijskog pjevanja od srednjovjekovnih rukopisa naovamo. Od Božića do Uskrsa, grupa pjevača slijedi glavne liturgijske svečanosti i stvara zvukovno ozračje sastavljeno od “učenog” i pučkog pjevanja, latinskih i glagoljaških slojeva. U južnim krajevima Hrvatske od srednjega vijeka do danas rimokatoličko bogoslužje i crkveno pjevanje osim na latinskom izvodi se i na narodnom (staroslavenskom i hrvatskom – šćavet) jeziku. Pučki crkveni pjevači iz tog područja stoljećima su miješali pučku svjetovnu glazbu i gregorijanske melodije, stvorivši tako mnoštvo glazbenih stilova i lokalnih napjeva.

Popularni termin za ovu vrstu glazbe je glagoljaško pjevanje. Ono je usmenom predajom sačuvano tijekom deset stoljeća kao specifična hrvatska sastavnica liturgijskog pjevanja po obredu zapadne crkve i jedinstveno je po poziciji glagoljaštva u organizaciji zapadne crkve kao i po kulturnoj tradiciji triju jezika (crkvenoslavenski, latinski, hrvatski) i triju pisama (glagoljica, bosanica, latinica).

Glagoljaško pjevanje i danas živi u pojedinim primorskim župama u kojima se održavaju starinske glazbene tradicije.

Izvodi se tijekom cijele godine, ali se intenzivira u božićnom razdoblju te u razdoblju korizme – osobito u Velikom tjednu.

Dvije grupe pjevača u ovome programu izvode napjeve

iz mise i oficija, uz nekoliko paraliturgijskih napjeva sačuvanih u pučkoj predaji. Program sačinjavaju rijetki napjevi svjedočeći o tradiciji koja je od srednjeg vijeka uživala “dvostruki status” u rimskoj crkvi, jer su hrvatski svećenici zadobili pravo bogoslužja na staroslavenskome jeziku u lokalitetima gdje se takva tradicija “udomaćila”. Na taj su način jadranska obala i otoci živjeli u stanovitoj bilingualnoj liturgijskoj tradiciji: latinskoj i glagoljaškoj. Sačuvane srednjovjekovne liturgijske knjige iz skriptorija svjedoče o ovoj dvostrukosti: uz prekrasnu kaligrafiju rukopisa pisanih beneventanom koja je došla iz Južne Italije, postoje i glagoljaški pisani izvori. Izmedju genealogija, navještaja pomičnih blagdana i aklamacija, pjevačice ansambla Dialogos pjevaju uglavnom latinske napjeve, dok Kantaduri pjevaju glagoljaške napjeve, stvarajući tako bogatu zvučnu fresku.

Pjevačice ansambla Dialogos izvode rijetke dragocjenosti iz hrvatskih latinskih rukopisa, od kojih je nekolicina iz ženskih samostana: ćut ćemo tako polifono čitanje za Božićnu jutarnju iz kontinentalne hrvatske baštine uz nekoliko napjeva koji su sačuvani u rukopisima iz Dalmacije.

Jedan od najvažnijih rukopisa srednjovjekovne arhaične polifonije na latinskome u Hrvatskoj jest tropirani Sanctus iz benediktinskog (ženskog) samostana u Zadru, začinjen diskretnim disonancama, sasvim različit od mekanog i harmoničnog napjeva Tota pulchra es, Maria, zapisanog nekoliko stoljeća kasnije u franjevačkome samostanu u istome gradu. Fragmentarni zapis na pergameni iz Zadra (responzorij Ante sex dies, bonus na online verziji ovog CD-a) svjedoči o još jednom glazbenom utjecaju, iz Južne Italije: beneventanskom koralu. Ista je beneventanska tra-

12 Menu dicija sačuvana u čuvenom dubrovačkom misalu (iz kojega pjevamo antifonu za klanjanje križu na Veliki petak, Crucem tuam). Dva rukopisa iz Trogira predstavljaju latinsku i hrvatsku tradiciju: Božićno čitanje (In principio erat Verbum) i snažni Judin monolog koji on izgovara prije no što će se objesiti (Govorenje Judino).

Repertoar Kantadura koncipiran je prema osnovnoj ideji prikaza raznolikosti i bogatstva specifičnog crkveno-pučkog glazbenog repertoara različitih regionalnih cjelina.

Najarhaičniji od prikazanih napjeva su oni iz Supetarske Drage s otoka Raba (Bog se rodi v Vitliomi, zabilježen je u tzv. Pariškom kodeksu s kraja 14. st.), Vrbanja na otoku Hvaru (štrofa iz procesije Za križen) i Zagvozda kod Imotskoga (kantanje Gospina plača). U starije načine pjevanja spadaju i napjevi zadarskog zaleđa i neretvanske doline koje karakteriziraju kvintni završeci (pjevanje na bas). Ostali su napjevi po svojoj harmoničnosti slični današnjim, temperiranim načinima pjevanja. Današnji je pak oblik crkvenog pučkog pjevanja na ovim prostorima, poput svjetovnog pučkog pjevanja, modificiran pod utjecajem tradicijski dominantnog stila – klapskog pjevanja. Tradicija klapa i klapske pjesme kakvu je danas poznajemo oblikuje se sredinom 19. stoljeća, u vrijeme kada su se profilirali kulturni, pa tako i glazbeni identiteti mediteranskih gradića na hrvatskoj obali i otocima, posebice u Dalmaciji. Javlja se u pučkim slojevima kao rezultat sklada postojećeg duhovnog stanja, a profilira se kroz stil homofonog višeglasja kao glavne karakteristike toga načina pjevanja.

Glazbene tradicije naše dalje i bliže prošlosti u ovoj su se glazbenoj priči zaplele delikatnije i različitije nego što smo na samom početku projekta zamišljali. Dvije strane ovoga programa otvaraju se kao dvije različite perspektive nad jednom realnošću i neke od skladbi služe poput pravih ogledala u tome kontekstu, izvođene istovremeno da bi

slušateljima dale dojam žive liturgijske situacije. Napjevi O, Bog se rodo, Vitlijanjo i Svit se konča potječu iz staroslavenske zbirke nazvane “Pariški zbornik” iz 14. stoljeća. Prvi je od njih uključen u program kao pučki napjev s Raba, dok je drugi poslužio za glazbenu rekonstrukciju o apokaliptičnoj viziji konca svijeta. Iznenadjujuća raznolikost glazbenih stilova i nijansi otvara se pred današnjom publikom, ukazujući na delikatno pitanje o pokušaju rekonstrukcije “autentičnog” zvuka povijesne liturgijske glazbe u Dalmaciji: virtuozni napjevi iz glagoljaške i latinske tradicije dolaze katkada iz susjednih, ili čak istih gradova, no njihovi vokalni stilovi svjedoče o velikoj razlici među tim lokalitetima.

Proces predaje melodija od generacije do generacije svjedoči o iznimnoj zahtjevnosti i pažnji pri svakome detalju: artikulaciji, ugodbi, ornamentiranju. I tako, poput Bizantinaca koji su s mnogo ljubavi slagali perle i drago kamenje po svojim dalmatikama, naši pjevači i pjevačice slažu svoju dalmatiku – glazbeno ruho satkano od pomno odabranih glazbenih primjera na različitim govorenim i pjevanim jezicima srednjovjekovne Hrvatske.

The work done by the artists in residence at the abbey is presented to the public through the series Fenêtres sur cour[s], the Festival and productions, and events taken on tour.

DIALOGOS The dominant theme of Dialogos’ residency at the Fondation Royaumont from 2011 to 2014 was dialogue: dialogue between musicology and interpretation, between pedagogy and the stage, between music and theatre, between sung voice and spoken voice, between oral and written, and, finally, between Eastern and Western Europe. This period, conducive to creation, allowed for the birth of three programmes. A concert with the programme Dalmatica in the monks’ refectory in 2011 inaugurates Dialogos’ residence in Royaumont. First performed in 2012, The Heretical Angels is a meditation on life and death, through a poetic and musical path to the heart of the music of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Swithun, first given the following year, honours the magnificent English polyphonies of the year 1000, in a tale in which dreams and fantasies interweave in a liberating, jubilatory whirl. Finally, in 2014, the Dialogos residency culminated with the premiere of Speculum Maius, an a cappella programme for 12 women’s voices that focuses on the most beautiful polyphonies from the 13th century at the time of Saint Louis. This programme brings together four solo voices from Dialogos and the eight singers of the Schola Royaumont, young professionals trained by Katarina Livljanić at the Royaumont Foundation over a two-year period. In the framework of the Royaumont residency, Dialogos also directed several educational projects for young professional singers, as well as in the Val d’Oise region, aimed at classes in primary and middle schools and amateur choruses.

LA FONDATION ROYAUMONT

Centre culturel international pour les artistes de la musique et de la danse La Fondation Royaumont a été créée en 1964 par un couple de mécènes, Henry et Isabel Goüin. Installée dans l’abbaye cistercienne reçue en donation, la Fondation a pour missions de conserver et d’enrichir ce patrimoine, de lui donner vie en le mettant au service des artistes et de le rendre accessible à tous les publics. Tous les travaux menés par les artistes en séjour à l’abbaye sont présentés au public dans le cadre des Fenêtres sur cour[s], des concerts et spectacles du Festival et des tournées organisées hors les murs.

DIALOGOS La résidence de Dialogos à la Fondation Royaumont de 2011 à 2014 s’est inscrite sous le signe du dialogue, dialogue entre la musicologie et l’interprétation, entre la pédagogie et la scène, entre la musique et le théâtre, entre voix chantée et voix parlée, entre l’oral et l’écrit, et finalement entre l’Est et l’Ouest de l’Europe. Cette période propice à la création a permis la naissance de trois programmes. Le concert Dalmatica, donné en septembre 2011 dans le réfectoire des moines, inaugure le début de la résidence de Dialogos à Royaumont. Créé en 2012, Les Anges Hérétiques est une méditation sur la vie et la mort, à travers un cheminement poétique et musical au coeur de la musique de Bosnie-Herzégovine. Swithun, créé en 2013, met à l’honneur les magnifiques polyphonies anglaises de l’an Mil, dans un conte où rêves et fantasmes s’entremêlent dans un tourbillon musical libérateur et jubilatoire. Enfin, en 2014, la résidence de Dialogos s’achève par la création de Speculum Maius, programme a cappella pour 12 voix de femmes qui porte sur plus belles polyphonies du 13e siècle au temps de Saint Louis. Ce programme rassemble quatre voix solistes de Dialogos et les 8 chanteuses de la Schola Royaumont, de jeunes professionnelles ayant été formées par Katarina Livljanić à la Fondation Royaumont sur une période de deux ans. Dans le cadre de sa résidence à Royaumont, Dialogos a également dirigé plusieurs projets pédagogiques auprès de jeunes chanteurs professionnels, mais également sur le territoire du Val d’Oise, en direction de classes de primaire, de collège et de choeurs amateurs.
