THE FIRST BOOK OF TOCCATAS “Music, wonderful concept of human intellect”.
(G. Frescobaldi, Preface to Il Primo Libro delle Fantasie a quattro, Milan, 1608)
The First Book of Toccatas was published for the first time in Rome in 1615 by Nicolò Borboni. This edition was followed by four others: one appeared in 1616 (the date was indicated by the printer Christophorus Blancus at the end of a revised version of the Preface To the Reader), another probably also appeared in 1616, a third in 1628 and finally one in 1637. During these twenty-two years, Frescobaldi made considerable changes to the contents of the collection, either in the number of pieces included or in their substantial development. The last edition, of 1637, is clearly considered the definitive edition showing the composer’s final creative thoughts. It goes without saying that the modifications introduced by Frescobaldi in these compositions, through the successive editions, show an increasing consistency of writing. The edition was produced by means of engraving on copper plate, a very costly process used only for important works: this particular process is distinguished by the great elegance and precision of writing. The same process, rather than that involving moveable type which was quicker but less clear in its results, had previously been used only for the Toccate of Claudio Merulo and was used again by Michelangelo Rossi, for his Toccate and by Bernardo Storace for his Selva d’intavolatura. The first edition of 1615 included as well as twelve toccate, the partite on the Ruggero, Romanesca and Monica themes. The prefaces To the Reader appeared already in a version which was to be changed in the later edition: the partite were also changed and in addition a series of partite on the Follia, and four correnti were added. The last edition of 1637 incorporates an Aggiunta of considerable dimensions, made up largely of dance music (including the famous Cento Partite) as well as the three capricci on Fra Jacopino, the Battaglia and the pastorale.
(G. Frescobaldi, Preface to the Toccate d’Intavolatvra… Libro Primo, Rome 1616)
The prefaces To the Reader today constitute absolutely the most precise source of information that we have on Frescobaldi’s style of playing and, more generally, the playing style of 17th century Italy. We can in fact extend these criteria without any doubt to keyboard works written right up to the end of the 17th century (including for example those of Pasquini), in view of the expressions of esteem and veneration accorded to Frescobaldi and to his teaching after his death and right up to the beginning of the following century. His music appeared as the supreme source of technical information, both for composition and performance. Here are some of the witnesses to this veneration: in 1650 in Perugia
a Tablature for Harpsichord and Organ composed by D. Scipione Giovanni Organist and Choirmaster in the Church of St. Peter’s in Gubbio was published. Unfortunately this music has been lost, but the Library of the Conservatorio in Bologna has preserved a manuscript copy of the title page and preface To the Reader(Cod. ms. 31) which reproduces in a rather embarrassing way that of Frescobaldi. In 1684, Lorenzo Penna in his Li primi Albori Musicali (The Dawn of Music), published in Bologna, encouraged beginners to familiarize themselves with “so many fine Recercari, Toccate, Canzoni, Capricci … particularly [those of] Girolamo Frescobaldi who was a master of his time”. And Francesco Gasparini was to
5 English confirm that “to become a true experienced Organist it is necessary to make a special study of tablature and particularly of the Toccatas, Fugues and Ricercars and others by Frescobaldi”: these words are found in the very famous treatise, L’Armonico Pratico (Harmonic Practice), published in Venice in 1708. TO THE READER I have noticed the favourable reception given to the manner of playing “con affetti cantabili e con diversità di passi”…
I think that these words encapsulate the fundamental idea of Italian musical expression: la cantabilità affettuosa (passionate melodic character) and the alignment of contrasting ideas. In the Vocabulary of the Academicians of Crusca, published in 1612, we find the following definition for the word affetto: “passion of the soul, born of desire for good and of a hatred for evil”. Affetti in a musical sense therefore means musical elements aroused by true passion, engendered by emotions and feelings: we descend into the indefinable (the fate and defence of music), into the domain of feeling which each of us, whether composer, performer or listener, would wish to cultivate and increase in order to savour more the pure artistic message. In any case it is clear that the affetto, a key element in performance and musical composition, as an irreplaceable moment, carries with it to a high degree a quirement for cantabilità. In a different way Monteverdi provided evidence for the impossibility of not considering the very close links between the affetti-passioni and music, when he wrote in the preface to his Madrigali guerrieri, et amorosi (published in Venice in 1638): “I consider that our principal passions or affections of the soul are three, namely, anger, temperance and humility or supplication, as the great philosophers quite rightly affirm, and moreover, that the very nature of our voice is found in high, low and middle: and as the Art of Music clearly shows by these three terms concitato (agitated), molle (soft) and temperato (tempered)” and he adds: “and knowing that opposites greatly move our soul, this should [also] be the aim of good music”, thus following the general tendency
which makes the progression by contrasts the best way to exhalt the inherent power to the affetto of each piece. … it seemed to show me as favourable to them so much was I affected with these feeble works, by presenting them for publication with the above preface; proclaiming that I prefer the merits of others and that I observe the value of each one. May you therefore, accept the affetto with which I present them to you, learned and courtly Reader.
q First: that this way of playing should not be subjected to
measure, as we see done in modern Madrigals, whose performance, however difficult, is made easier by the manner of conducting the measure, making it sometimes languishing, sometimes rapid and keeping it even in suspense according to the feeling expressed or the sense of the words.
The absence of measure is certainly one of the mythical elements invoked in the course of a Frescobaldian performance, but also one of the most easily subject to ambiguity. It is clear that Frescobaldi did not restrict this particular style to the toccate – which he had not hitherto particularly mentioned; he incorporated it into all his works, including pieces like the dances and canzoni which, through their rhythmic or contrapuntal character would seem to require a more rigidly and severely constant measure. But it is exactly in this parallel with the modern madrigal – a vocal situation – that the explanation of his wishes is found: the madrigal was in Frescobaldi’s time a very complex composition which by then had undergone extensive technical and expressive development. But it is now clear that it is precisely in the extreme attention that it gives to the horizontal dimension of the melodic line – of the single voice of the singer in a madrigal – that contains the generating cell of a more general and superior expressivity of ensemble; the singer, helped by the presence of a text and therefore by the clear description of a feeling, will always be in step with rhythmic flexibility, scorning his line in relation to the emotive content of the words that he is singing.
6 The greater or lesser strength of his part will oblige the ensemble of singers to support him in his expressive intentions. I think that Frescobaldi aspired to this sort of elation of horizontality, engendered by an imaginery text that can easily and without ambiguity be found between the folds of a vocabulary of rhetorico-musical figures familiar to the musicians of the time. Those who have the opportunity of performing the repertory of the seconda prattica from the inside – as singers – will also understand how the elasticity of measure prescribed by Frescobaldi is not restricted to a simple contrast of tempo changes passing from one section to another in the compositions, but offers as well the possibility of gradually enlarging, accelerating or suspending the tactus according to the feeling, combining then in a better balance, especially in the toccate, the oscillations of the tempo by an appropriate choice in the speed of the tactus itself. Monteverdi again helps us with the meaning of tactus oscillation when, at the beginning of the famous Lamento della Ninfa from the Madrigali guerrieri, et amorosi he writes of the “manner of representing the present melody. The three parts which sing outside the lament of the nymph (the three male voices) are placed separately in this way (the parts of the two madrigals at the beginning and at the end of the lament were printed as usual in separate partbooks) because they are sung to the tempo of the hand (with a regular beat), the three other parts which with feeble voice express their commiseration for the nymph, have been placed in the score, in order to follow her tears, such that they should be sung in the tempo of the affetto of the soul and not that of the hand”. And Giovanni Bonachelli also demands [that his performers] “observe the affetti of the words and of the passages and especially in the recitative, or representative, style, as some call it, and conduct the measure, in conformmity with the feelings, marking it sometimes quick, sometimes slow, following the occasion requiring now rapidity, now langour”. 1 1 Giovanni Bonachelli, Corona di Sacri Gigli [Crown of Sacred Lillies], Venice, Vincenti 1642: quoted in Etienne Darbellay, Le Toccate e i Capricci di Girolamo Frescobaldi, Milan, Suvini Zerboni, 1988.
w In the Toccatas I wanted not only for them to be rich in
different passi (passages) or affetti (feelings), but also that each of these pieces may be played separately from each other so that the performer may, without being obliged to finish all the pieces, end where he wishes.
e The beginnings of the toccatas will be played adagio and
arpeggiated, and the same goes for the ligature (suspensions) or durezze (dissonances), as also in the middle of the work the keys may be struck together in order that the instrument is not left [sounding] empty: this “battimento” may be repeated according to the performer's wishes.
We again read in the Vocabulary of the Academicians of the Crusca for the word “adagio” – “leisurely, commodiously”. Not only slowly therefore, but in a commodious tempo, which whether slow or quick allows a clear expression of the text’s feeling. The “arpeggio” to which Frescobaldi refers is certainly not the rapid shelling of the notes that we find in the following century, but a restoration of sound that is calmer and more relaxed, especially aimed at making each note distinctly heard and at filling out the sound of the instrument. To this same end Don Scipione Giovanni manages to be clearer when he writes: “the beginnings of the toccatas should be played adagio, arpeggiating with order, without confusion, playing the parts separately from each other, but in a way that creates a unified harmony that does not detract from the beauty of the piece, warning also that the instrument should not be left empty”. The later consideration of “ligature a vero durezze” (suspensions or dissonances) reproduces almost to the letter the suggestion of Girolamo Diruta’s Il Transilvano, one of the most important treatises on performance for organ and harpsichord, published in Venice in 1593. Here the author suggests that the harpsichordist “supply by the vivacity and dexterity of his hand what is lacking (in the sustaining power of the harpsichord) by lightly striking the Key several times”. It is clear that this practice was very widespread
7 English (other documents clearly confirm this) and that its realization was achieved with extreme finesse, lightness and elegance. Giovanni Scipione also recommends this practice, with Lorenzo Penna in the work already cited.
r On the last note, whether [preceded] by trills or leaping
passages or steps, one should stop, even if this note is a quaver or semiquaver, in order to distinguish one note from the next; because this stopping will avoid confusion of one passage with another.
This rule stresses one of the pivotal problems in the performance of Frescobaldi’s works, clarity. I understand this clarity of expression to mean not confusing the grammatical and syntactic elements of the composition with those that precede or follow. Don Scipione Giovanni adds at this point that this will lead to playing senza confusione (without confusion). This is a reference to musical practices that were closely linked to the rhetorical tradition. Francesco Tasini, in one of the most important articles to appear on Frescobaldi’s style, affirms: “it is on a basis of unambiguous elocution that rests the preoccupation “not to confuse one passaggio with another” (Frescobaldi), the concern to avoid the impression “of singing one passaggio in succession to another” (Severi): in short the “rhetorical colours” (Caccini) should be treated and considered “logical terms, definitions […] in intellectual operations” (Magone), with an art of “defining, that is to say, drawing […], dividing” in the harmonic “Dispositio”. It is to achieve a similar end that the following point is intended.
t The cadences, although written fast, should be quite
sustained; and the approach to the conclusion of passaggi or cadences should be played in a more leisurely tempo. The separation and conclusion of the passages will occur when there is a consonance between the two hands coming together and written in long notes (semibreves).
And again with the same criterion:
y When you find a trill in the right or left hand, and at the same
time some figuration in the other hand, these should not be played note against note, but [you should] seek only to make the trill fast and the figuration should proceed less quickly and “affettuoso”; otherwise there would be confusion.
The preface continues:
u When you find a passage in quavers or semiquavers in both
hands at the same time you should not play it too quickly; and the hand with the semiquavers should make them somewhat dotted, that is not the first, but the second [note of each pair] be dotted and so on from one note to the next.
i Before doing the passi doppi (double passages) with the two hands in semiquavers you should stop on the preceding note, even if it is a crotchet; then you should resolutely play the passaggio (figuration) to show off the manual agility as much as possible.
o In the partite when you find passaggi (figuration) and affetti it is better to chose a largo (broad and slow) tempo; you will also observe this in the toccate.
These last two passages show that Frescobaldi’s style was not exclusively virtuoso, or at least that, in the toccatas which are generically considered vehicles of a more complex technical message, the element regarded as more important remains always as ever the expressivity. The passaggi are the long successions of semiquavers found frequently in the toccatas, which through a very variegated melodic outline draw out connections and correspondences between bits of the melodic ideas, sometimes organized directly to support a process that is clearly imitative. For these passaggi Frescobaldi requires a tempo that is comodo (leisurely) or even largo (broad and slow). It seems then that the virtuoso gesture should be exclusively reserved for the passi doppi, i.e. those passages in which both hands play semiquavers at the same time. It is as if to warn the listener of the prodigious tech-
8 nique that he would achieve (and also, a little, to “take a breath” and to relax before [showing] his prowess) that Frescobaldi prescribes a pregnant pause to achieve the strongest theatrical effect. The paragraph continues: The other partite which do not include passaggi should be played in a rather quick measure, leaving to the good taste and fine judgement of the performer the choice of tempo, in which lies the spirit and perfection of this manner and of this style of playing.
1) The Passachagli (passacaglias) should be played separately in a way that most pleases you, adjusting the tempo of one part to the other, with a view to their linking; the same goes for the Ciaccone (chaconnes).
— “Girolamo Frescobaldi, Master of the Organists, inventor of so many playing styles”. (Luigi Battiferri, preface to the Ricercari, Bologna 1669)
There can be no doubt that the element of Frescobaldi’s language that still seems extraordinary to us today is its variety: a variety which knows no limits, either in its forms or in its melodic or harmonic invention. The toccata, the place designated for total extroversion, might cause confusion for a listener who is not prepared to receive the music as if it were a real discourse; if he wants to find symmetries and relationships between ideas he will be completely lost. Toccatas flow in quite a different way like the telling of a seductive story built upon a predominant feeling that is often determined by the way in which piece was composed. Despite all this nothing is improvised. I strongly believe that in reality the toccata corresponds to what may be described as a very well-structured discourse, cleverly articulated with the intention of producing the main effect of ars rhetorica, that is one of convincing the listener. It is therefore with a prose discourse,
rather than with a poetic scansion (more appropriate for dance music) that the toccata should be correlated. Not all the toccatas are susceptible to exposition according Frescobaldi’s criteria. For example, the Toccata Duodecima is more akin at its start to a ricercar, while the Undecima opens with a pedal point on C – very majestic and “affettuosissimo” – over which fascinating harmonies unravel. The Toccata Nona follows the pattern of Gabrieli’s toccatas, composed entirely in diminutions (short note values), while the Settima, with its extraordinary internal fluidity of discourse, offers one of the most visionary of all Frescobaldi’s works. In the Partite (variations) the excitement of melodic development is taken to its very limits. Here Frescobaldi was restricted by the bass pattern selected as a theme; but even here his ingenuity knew no bounds. In some places certain manners, that were clearly dear to the composer, are recognisable to the point where he presents them unchanged in different sets of partite. We can compare, for example, the thirteenth partita from the partite sopra la Romanesca with the eleventh partita from the partite sopra il Ruggiero; or the fourteenth partita from the partite sopra la Romanesca with the tenth sopra il Ruggiero. The four series of Partite are built upon the traditional bases and melodies. The Partite sopra l’aria della Romanesca develop a base that is similar to that of the passamezzo antico: its origin is uncertain but most documents claim it to be Italian. This was perhaps the most famous bass pattern of the period, and it was used a great deal, by composers like Monteverdi – who in his Seventh Book of Madrigals wrote a duet for two sopranos on the Romanesca – and others, like Trabaci, Storace, Mayone and Strozzi. The Partite sopra la Monica are based on an old melody that was widely known throughout Europe in the sixteenth century; they were so called because of their association with a text that recounts the misfortunes of a young girl who is sent to a nunnery – to become a “monica” (nun) against her will. The Partite sopra Ruggiero are built on a bass whose name derives from a stanza from Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso. The last variations, the Partite sopra Folia, develop a bass that is
9 English
10 nothing like the Follia of Corellian fame, but one that was in other places called Fidele or Fedele (the faithful). The Capriccio del soggetto written on the tune of Ruggiero combines in a series of variations the bass of Ruggiero with the melody of the song Fra Jacopino (Frère Jacques, Brother Jack), which is announced at the beginning of the piece. The Capriccio sopra la battaglia recalls the repertory of stylized sounds of military combat, in a way that was quite common at the time; while the Capriccio pastorale belongs to the tradition of pastorales which enjoyed great favour not only in Italy but even more in France and Germany. A word in particular about the Cento partite sopra Passacagli. Etienne Darbellay has shown that this monumental and genial composition represents in fact the collation of different pieces which Frescobaldi, with an undeniable sense of form, changes to the extent that it takes on the dimensions and characteristics that we know. The same Darbellay also stresses the fact that the word “cento” (hundred) was added later to the rest of the presumed original title (“Partite sopra Passacagli”). This desire for precision, fundamentally pleasant and stimulating, leads me to suggest the hypothesis that in effect the composition ended with the hundredth variation, so that the ensuing variations are in fact added from superfluous material that Frescobaldi decided was worth including for publication and which he placed after the Cento Partite, entitling them “Passacaglias in another mode”. The strange ending in the key of E (the Cento Partite all have as a bass the passacaglia formula in D), the presence of a pedal point – a typical feature of a composition’s ending – on the last chord of the hundredth variation, and the change of key signature – one flat – quite superfluous since the composition would continue in the key of D, tends to support my hypothesis. The two parts of the composition have therefore been kept separate in this recording in order to encourage this possibility, while leaving completely open a question which is in any case difficult to resolve. The title-page mentions “harpsichord and organ”. Here the
work is in fact performed on these two instruments. The criteria for selection takes into consideration the characteristics of the musical style, favouring the organ for the pieces which, through their contrapuntal or harmonic interest attain greater clarity and expression when played on the organ. On the other hand the harpsichord literature of the seventeenth century was playable on the organ and vice versa. It was rare that compositions which were not of sacred type would be exclusively intended for performance on the organ. RINALDO ALESSANDRINI

The harpsichord traditionally ascribed to Ioannes Celestini The harpsichord used for this recording stands in the Haags Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. It forms the subject of a paper by Denzil Wraight in the Organ Year Book of 1988. Many of the details about the instrument given here are taken directly from that article. The harpsichord has an outer case painted with various scenes in seventeenth-century style. This painting is probably late nineteenth-century work. The instrument itself, of plain cypress wood, fits into this outer case. The compass is from GG to f3 without GG#. There are two unison stops, one of which can be turned on and off, probably for tuning purposes only, using a draw stop that is accessed through a movable panel in the cheek of the outer case. The other register is permanently on. It seems likely that the instrument was intended to be played with both registers always on. The instrument is strung in brass in the bass and iron for the rest of the compass. Most eighteenth-century Italian harpsichords were probably originally intended for brass stringing throughout the compass. This particular instrument, however, probably belongs to an older tradition in which instruments were strung with brass and iron. The pitch originally intended may have been higher than modern pitch. For reasons of conservation, however, the pitch for the recording was maintained at a1 = 415 Hz. The tuning used was meantone, exchanging d# for e ♭ when necessary. There are three parchment rosettes in the spruce soundboard. Although this harpsichord bears the name Ioannis Celestini, it was not made by him. The inscription found on the nameboard reads ‘Iohannis Celestini MDCV’ and is written in the Venetian style with decorated capital letters. But the nameboard itself is not original: it is not made of cypress, like the inner case of the instrument, and the decorative moulding on the upper side of the nameboard does not match the corresponding moulding on the case. Furthermore, there is an obvious discrepancy between the case mouldings of this instrument and those on other instruments which bear Celestini’s name. These mouldings can be used to aid
the authentication of Italian harpsichords and in this particular case one can conclude that Celestini did not make this harpsichord. Other stylistic features, such as the rosettes in the soundboard, confirm this conclusion. Furthermore, the soundboard is made of spruce, a wood not used for the soundboard of any authenticated and dated sixteenth-century Venetian harpsichord. The present compass of this instrument, nearly a full five octaves, is unusually large for 1605. It is nonetheless the original compass as evidenced by the balance rail of the keyboard. This is confirmed by construction lines scored on the baseboard. These lines indicate the positions of some of the strings and prove that the original range must have been nearly five octaves. It seems likely that this instrument was made towards the middle of the seventeenth century, not in Venice but in a more central area of Italy. At some time, probably during the late nineteenth century, the outer case was repainted. At that time a new keyboard was made but parts of the old key frame were retained. More recently, the instrument was restored and a new keyboard made. Despite all the changes it has suffered, the sound must reflect the original seventeenth-century sound. But one must not forget that the mirror is more than three hundred years old. MICHAEL LATCHAM

The Meiarini Organ of S. Maria del Carmine, Brescia 1630 A mystery surrounds this wonderful instrument. The builder is anonymous. The dispersion of the archives of the church of S. Maria del Carmine poses numerous problems for the study of the masterpieces possessed by one of the most beautiful monasteries in the town. The superficial attribution of the instrument to the Antegnatis did not persuade the greatest of the Italian organologists Renato Lunelli, who in 1960 suggested that the construction of this organ should be attributed to another representative of the famous school of organ builders in Brescia. The analysis
12 of the materials, windchest, outer and inner pipes, confirms this hypothesis and establishes more precisely the instrument’s date of construction: the first decades of the seventeenth century, although it still does not allow us to identify the builder. The problem of the Brescian school in the Renaissance and Baroque periods arises from the very fact that it has still not been studied with all the attention that it deserves, and that no one has ever compared in an appropriate manner all the constructional characteristics of the organs or of the pipework used and reused in other instruments. The problem is complicated by the very fact that at the time which interests us there was probably in Brescia more than one workshop specialising in the construction of organ pipes, as is attested by a document dating from 1641. This had led two famous organologists to attribute nearly all the organs in Brescia at this time to members of the Antegnati family (undoubtedly the best known), although Lunelli saw their competitors Virchi or Meiarini as the probable builders of these instruments. Recent research on the pipework of some of these instruments has established at least five types of different construction particular to Brescian manufacture between the second half of the sixteenth century and the first decades of the seventeenth century. The fortunate rediscovery of part of the archives which had disappeared allows Lunelli’s hypothesis to be validated, confirming that in 1628 an agreement to pay the sum of 525 gold crowns was made between the monastery and Tomaso Meiarini for the construction of a new organ which was to be erected in 1633 by Graziadio Antegnati II, since Meiarini had died during the plague of 1630. Anno 1633, iam preparatum a Meiarino, organum a Graziadjo Antegnato fui erectum”. This quotation is of exceptional importance because it allows us to reconstruct one of the missing links in the organological chain of the Brescian school and represents an absolute novelty. The instrument occupies an important place in the panorama of
our Renaissance organs. It comes between the organ of the church of S. Giuseppe, a severe sixteen-foot instrument by Graziadio I and Costanzo Antegnati (1581) and the more vivacious anonymous eight-foot instrument of the church of S. Carlo, dating from the first half of the seventeenth century. The Meiarini organ has a quite particular sound. The dimensions of its twelve-foot pipes make it similar to those of the organ of the Duomo Vecchio and to that of S. Maurizio in the Monastero Maggiore in Milan, both of them built by Gian Giacomo Antegnati respectively in 1536 and 1554, although the former was refitted and extended by Serassi in 1826 while the latter was refurbished with a new windchest reconstructed as a copy. On the other hand in the case of our instrument, the facade and nearly all the internal pipes as well as the windchest are original. The soundframe offers three special features of great interest: two supplementary ripieno ranks – the Trigesimasesta and Quadragesima – the Flute in Quintadecima (still present today) and finally that all the pipes in the ripieno ranks from the soprani of the Quintadecima are made of fine pewter. The others are made of hammered and planed lead. The Flute in Quintadecima is conical. Moreover the exceptional range of the keyboard from low F1 to high C5 allows the performer to play in whatever register an octave lower, thus transforming for example the octave Flute to a unison Flute, which infinitely increases the expressive possibilities of the rich palette of timbres. The instrument has survived in a fine state of conservation. The modifications which it has undergone over the course of the centuries (the last dating from the late nineteenth-century) have only been marginal and have nearly all preserved the original material. A first attempt at restoration (an incomplete one) was undertaken in 1960 by the Brescian builder Armando Maccarinelli. In 1991-2 the “Soprintendenza ai Beni Ambientali ed Architettonici di Brescia” financed a restoration undertaken by the workshop of Mascioni, Cuvio (Varese) under the direction of the architect Diego Morato and of the present author, under the supervision of the Commission for the
13 English Menu preservation of Historic Organs of Lombardi. On this occasion the keyboard, the pedalboard, the bellows and all the missing pipework were reconstructed in the original style. The splendid resulting sound that is restored in this recording does honour to a great builder of Brescia who, until now, was only known through a handful of archival documents. He has attracted numerous organists, organologists and enthusiasts from all over the world. In an absolute sense this recording is the first to be undertaken since the instrument’s restoration.

Anno 1633, iam preparatum a Meiarino, organum a Graziadjo Antegnato fui erectum ».

(G. Frescobaldi, prefazione a Toccate d’Intavolatvra… Libro Primo, Roma 1616)
r Nell’ultima nota, cosi de trilli come di passaggi di salto o di
u Trovandosi alcun passo di crome e di semicrome insieme a tutte
y Le cadenze benché sieno scritte veloce conviene sostenerle
assai; e nello accostarsi il concluder de passaggi o cadenze si anderà sostenendo il tempo più adagio. Il separare e concluder de passi sarà quando troverassi la consonanza insieme d’ambedue le mani scritta di minime;
29 Italiano Una parola in particolare sulle Cento Partite sopra Passacagli.

Anno 1633, iam preparatum a Meiarino, organum a Graziadjo Antegnato fui erectum”.
geschrieben sind, ziemlich zu verzögern; und wenn sich das Ende von Läufen oder Kadenzen nähert, soll man weiterspielen, indem man das Tempo langsamer ausführt. Das Beschließen und Trennen der Abschnitte voneinander ist dann vorzunehmen, wenn die Konsonanz gemeinsam in beiden Händen in halben Noten geschrieben auftritt;
i Bevor man doppelt verzierte Abschnitte [passi doppi] mit

Anno 1633, iam preparatum a Meiarino, organum a Graziadjo Antegnato fui erectum…”.
FLAVIO DASSENNO

44 The publisher would like to thank the SOPRINTENDENZA AI BENI AMBIENTALI ED ARCHITETTONICI DI BRESCIA for having graciously placed at his disposal and in the best working conditions the magnificent Meiarini organ whose restoration it had directed. He would also like to express his gratitude to the GEMEENTEMUSEUM in The Hague and its musical instrument curator, Michael Latcham who gave permission for the use of the harpsichord attributed to Celestini. Thanks to these two fine examples of Italian manufacture from the seventeenth century, the restoration of Frescobaldi’s works achieves in projection, in balance, in beauty of sound, and in appropriate expression a level hitherto unknown.
