Corelli and the Recorder After the Baroque type of recorder was imported to England from France around 1673 (under the now-misleading name flute), the instrument achieved an unprecedented popularity among both amateurs and professionals for over fifty years. For amateurs, numerous “tutors” were published, containing a fingering chart, some rudimentary instruction, and a selection of the latest vocal and instrumental music, arranged for the alto (treble) recorder. “Persons of quality” (members of the middle and upper classes) such as the law student Dudley Ryder and the medical doctor Claver Morris took lessons and played the instrument by themselves or with friends. The French expatriate woodwind maker Peter Bressan made a fortune from selling high-quality recorders in several sizes, although the alto remained the pre-eminent instrument for solo and chamber music. Professional players of the oboe, flute, violin, bass violin, and harpsichord doubled on the recorder in music performed at the theatres and opera houses, in public and private concerts, and at the Court. The most famous players, who all also composed, were foreigners, taking advantage of London’s thriving musical life: James Paisible, John Loeillet, Johann Ernst Galliard, Francesco Barsanti, and Giuseppe Sammartini. The publishers John Walsh in London and Estienne Roger in Amsterdam (who had agents in London) issued large quantities of recorder music for the amateur market, mostly originally written by or for the professionals.

The great Italian composer Arcangelo Corelli made an enormous impression in this music-crazed England, starting with the importation of his 12 sonatas, Op. 5, from Italy in 1700—a business venture of the violinists John Banister II and Robert King, who also played the recorder. The set was immediately reprinted by both Walsh and Roger, who had a sales battle over it. Banister’s colleague at the Drury Lane Theatre, Gasparo Visconti (“Gasperini”), a former student of Corelli who worked in London 1702–05, popularized the sonatas in the mini-concerts called “entertainments” held in the theatre intermissions.

These pieces are commonly called “solo sonatas” nowadays and considered to be for violin and basso continuo, but the Italian title page, copied by both Roger and Walsh, labels them for “violino e violone o cimbalo” (violin and violone or harpsichord), so they were actually conceived as duo sonatas.

Corelli does not appear to have written a single piece of original music for the recorder, but numerous arrangements were made of his string works. As some measure of the importance of recorder, in 1702 Walsh issued an anonymous arrangement of the last five sonatas and the variations on La Folia from Op. 5 for “a Flute and a Bass”—emphasizing their duo nature—made “with the approbation of several eminent masters.” The parts are marked “Fluto Primo” and “Fluto Basso” (albeit with bass figures), although the latter would have needed considerable modification to be played on a bass recorder. Perhaps Banister and King had a role in the arrangement? Walsh may not have known the arranger’s identity, or else he

5 English would presumably have exploited the sales potential of the name, as he did with Visconti’s proofreading of Opp. 1-4 in an advertisement in 1705.

Besides La Folia, which is even more a tour de force for the recorder as it is for violin, with leaps to f3 and g3 rarely found in England throughout this period, the sonatas of the second half of Op. 5, in effect suites of dances, are less technically demanding than the free sonatas of the first half, which is perhaps why they were chosen here.

The arranger (or publisher) changed the order of the first four sonatas, swapping the first two with the next two. He transposed three of the six works a minor third higher, the standard transposition for flute works in the Baroque era, but one of them only a minor second higher, and La Folia as well as the sonata on this recording (Walsh VII in D minor) a perfect fourth higher. Notes still below the range of the alto recorder were generally transposed up an octave, sometimes flattening Corelli’s characteristic leaps in the process.

On the recorder the lively figuration would have been challenging for the time, before J. S. Bach and Antonio Vivaldi took the instrument to new technical heights.

Roger North, a London lawyer-turned-gentleman farmer, wrote that in England “the works of the great Corelli […] became the only music relished for a long time, and there seemed to be no satiety of them; nor is the virtue of them yet exhaled, and it is a question whether it will ever be spent, for if music can be immortal, Corelli’s consorts will be so.” Although the English were apparently more impressed by the duo sonatas at first, in 1701–02 Walsh began publishing what

North called “consorts,” the Sonate a 3 for two violins and other instruments, first published in Italy in 1681–94 and already available from Roger for several years (1696–98). Once again Corelli did not have in mind what we think of as basso continuo, but violone or archlute with organ (Op. 1 and 3), violone or harpsichord (Op. 2), and just violone (Op. 4). Walsh issued an arrangement of six of the twelve sonatas in Op. 4 transposed “for two Flutes and a Bass” in 1702, again “with the approbation of several eminent masters.” Paisible and Visconti were twice advertised as playing “a piece of Instrumental Music [or a Sonata] by the great Arcangelo Corelli for a Flute and Violin” at Drury Lane, presumably an arrangement from one of the published sets. Interest in the Sonate a 3 was evidently picking up: in 1705 Walsh published a complete set, Opp. 1–4, escalating his sales battle to a war with Roger over whose edition was more “correct” or “exact” (free of proofreading errors). A second set of arrangements, “Sonatas for 2 Flutes and a Bass,” came out in 1707, said to be “collected out of the choicest of his Works,” but in fact nos. 1–2 and 4–7 from Op. 2.

Walsh issued two more recorder arrangements from the duo sonatas Op. 5 in 1707, this time nos. 3 and 4, from the more technically challenging free sonatas in the first half. Curiously, they were bundled with a set of trio sonatas for two recorders and “a bass” by the German composer Johann Christoph Pez, a follower of Corelli but not associated with England. The title page observes that the duo sonatas were “artfully transpos’d and fitted to a flute and a bass, yet continu’d in the same key they were compos’d in.” In other words,

6 a way was found to leave them in the original key.

Passages that include notes below the range of the alto recorder are generally taken up an octave. In No. 4, the double and triple stops that adorn the fugal entries of the second movement are resolved into passage work. An advertisement observes that the sonatas are “Illustrated throughout with proper graces, by an eminent master.”

Was Banister perhaps responsible for the “graces” (free ornamentation) in the slow movements?

North praised “all those elegant turns of voices and instruments which are taught by the Italian masters (and perhaps outdone by the English Banister) [and] accounted glorious ornaments.”

Despite their anonymous and hidden-away publication, these ornamented slow movements seem to have been the first of Corelli’s ever published.

Corelli’s own versions (“with the ornaments of the Adagios composed by Mr. Corelli as he plays them”) were not published by Roger until 1710 and reprinted by Walsh a year later. So florid and exuberant were Corelli’s ornaments that considerable doubt was expressed about their authenticity. North wrote, “Some presumer has published a continual course of this sort of stuff in score with Corelli’s solos.... Upon the bare view of the print anyone would wonder how so much vermin could creep into the works of such a master.... Judicious architects abominate anything of embroidery upon a structure that is to appear great, and trifling about a harmonious composition is no less absurd.” What would he have made of Baroque architecture on the Continent of Europe?! Roger countered by advertising: “those who are curious to see Mr. Corelli’s original and his letters on this

subject can see them at Estienne Roger’s.” The ornamentation from the 1707 recorder arrangements has less direction than Corelli’s own, but still includes plenty of his irregular roulades, showing familiarity with a similar Italian practice.

Roger did indeed have contact with Corelli and signed a contract to publish the composer’s twelve concerti grossi, Op. 6, on 21 April 1712, in which the latter was generously given no fewer than 150 complimentary copies of the edition, presumably to sell in Italy. But Corelli died less than nine months later on 8 January 1713, complicating the deal. It was not until 1 January 1715 that Roger’s London agent announced the publication.

The enormous excitement that its arrival in England inspired in local musicians was described by Sir John Hawkins. Immediately after he received the music, the bookseller Prévost, who dealt in Dutch publications, took it to Henry Needler, a keen amateur violinist, who happened to be performing in a private concert at John Loeillet’s house. “Mr. Needler was transported with the sight of such a treasure; the books were immediately laid out, and he and the rest of the performers played the whole twelve concertos through, without rising from their seats.” North commented: “... and at last the concertos came, all which are to the musicians like the bread of life.”

In 1719, Roger’s daughter and successor-inbusiness, Jeanne, issued an arrangement of Op. 6 in the form of trio sonatas for two recorders and basso continuo made by Johann Christian Schickhardt, omitting the viola part. Schickhardt, a German woodwind player and a prolific composer, published no fewer than thirty sets of works

7 English Menu with the Roger firm, and even acted as its agent when he was living in Hamburg. Except for the third concerto, where he simply omitted the third movement, and the eighth (“Fatto per la notte di Natale,” Christmas), where he omitted two and a half movements including the celebrated Pastorale ad libitum, he freely mixed different concertos in creating his sonate, and even added a simple Giga of his own. Walsh reprinted the arrangement in 1720 as “By an eminent master,” although one of the firm’s catalogues supplied the name of the master this time.

Five years later, Walsh published a second arrangement: “Corelli’s XII Concertos Transpos’d for Flutes, viz. a Fifth, a Sixth, a Consort, and Voice Flute; the proper Flute being nam’d to each Concerto, and so adapted to the Parts that they perform in Consort with the Violins and other Instruments throughout, the Whole being the first of this Kind yet Publish’d.”

“In Consort with” means that the works are kept in their original keys. Again the viola part is dropped. The fifth flute was a soprano recorder in c2, the sixth flute a soprano (descant) recorder in d2, the consort flute an alto, and the voice flute an alto in d1. Eight of the concertos were arranged for two altos, three for two sixth flutes or voice flutes (both instruments in D), and one for two sopranos.

The other sizes were treated as transposing instruments in relation to the alto, or in other words, could be played with alto fingerings. In this way the arranger could, for example, notate the sixthflute or voice-flute parts of the fourth concerto in F major, but have them sound in the original key of D major, as shown in the concertante cello part

and basso continuo. Once more, passages that go below the range of the recorder in question are transposed up an octave, but the arrangement otherwise follows the original almost note for note.

The numerous recorder arrangements of Corelli’s sonatas and concertos formed a distinctive part of the recorder’s repertoire in the early eighteenth century, and are still rewarding and instructive for us today.

Corelli et la flûte à bec C’est vers 1673 que la flûte à bec de type baroque que nous connaissons fut importée de France vers l’Angleterre, sous le nom fourvoyant de flute. Pendant un demi-siècle, l’instrument rencontra un très vif succès auprès des cercles amateurs et auprès des professionnels. De nombreuses méthodes, ou tutors, étaient destinées aux amateurs: les recueils étaient contenaient une tablature des doigtés, des instructions rudimentaires et une sélection des derniers airs à la mode, d’inspiration vocale ou instrumentale, transcrits pour la flûte alto. A cet égard, les témoignages nous indiquent que les persons of quality (membres des classes moyennes et supérieures) tels que l’étudiant en droit Dudley Ryder, et le docteur Claver Morris prenaient régulièrement des cours de flûte et jouaient soit pour leur propre plaisir, soit entre amis. Le facteur français d’instruments à vent Peter Bressan fit fortune en Angleterre en vendant des flûtes de très haute qualité de toutes les tailles : il est à noter que la flûte alto restera le modèle de prédilection pour la musique soliste ainsi que pour la musique de chambre. À la cour ou dans des cercles privés, dans les théâtres ou bien à l’opéra, les hautboïstes, violonistes, altistes et clavecinistes professionnels jouaient tous de la flûte à bec. Les maisons d’éditions John Walsh à Londres ou Estienne Roger à Amsterdam (qui avait des intermédiaires à Londres) publiaient une énorme quantité de pièces pour la flûte à bec, destinées aux amateurs aussi bien qu’aux professionnels. À la fin du XVIIème siècle, le grand compositeur Italien Arcangelo Corelli impressionna cette Angleterre assoiffée de musique, en premier lieu avec l’importation de ses douze sonates op. V en 1700, une opération commerciale des violonistes John Banister II et Robert King, qui étaient également flûtistes. Devant le succès de cette œuvre, de nouvelles éditions furent publiées par Walsh et Roger, qui menèrent une grande bataille pour s’en accaparer les droits. Gasparo Visconti (« Gasperini »), collègue de Banister au théâtre Drury Lane et ancien disciple de Corelli, travailla à Londres entre 1702 et 1705, et pendant cette période rendit célèbres ces sonates à l’occasion de mini-concerts présentés pendant les intervalles des représentations théâtrales. De nos jours, ces pièces sont considérées comme des sonates solo pour violon et basse continue. Mais le titre de l’édition italienne, retranscrit dans les éditions de Roger et de Walsh les définit sonates pour « violino e violone o cimbalo » (violon et violone ou clavecin), ce qui laisse présumer qu’il faut davantage considérer ces pièces comme des sonates en duo.

Il semblerait que Corelli n’ait pas lui-même composé pour la flute à bec, mais un grand nombre de transcriptions de ses œuvres pour instruments à cordes nous sont parvenues. L’importance de la flûte à bec est témoignée par la publication en 1702 chez Walsh d’un arrangement anonyme des 5 dernières sonates et de

10 la Folia du célèbre recueil op. V pour « a Flute and a Bass » (arrangement qui insiste donc sur cet aspect de duo) « avec l’approbation de maîtres éminents ».

Les parties sont spécifiées pour « Fluto Primo » et « Fluto Basso », mais cette dernière étant numérotée comme une basse continue, il est difficile d’imaginer qu’elle puisse être réalisable sans d’importantes modifications. Faut-il imaginer que Banister et King aient eu un rôle dans cette transcription ? Walsh ne connaissait certainement pas l’identité réelle du compositeur à l’origine de la transcription sinon il en aurait certainement profité pour exploiter la notoriété de celui-ci comme il le fit lors de la révision des op.

I-IV par Visconti, largement promue pendant l’année 1705. Mis à part la Folia – qui se trouve être un tour de force pour la flûte à bec encore plus que pour le violon, avec des sauts et changements de registre que l’on trouve rarement dans la littérature pour la flûte à bec à cette époque en Angleterre, les sonates de la seconde partie de cet opus V – pour la plupart des suites de danses – sont moins exigeantes du point de vue technique que celles de la première partie, et furent doc choisies pour l’édition.

L’arrangeur (ou l’éditeur) modifia l’ordre des premières quatre sonates, en inversant les deux premières et les deux suivantes. Il transposa trois des six pièces à la tierce mineure supérieure, – transposition de routine à l’époque – une seule pièce un demi-ton plus haut, et la Folia et la sonate de cet enregistrement (Walsh VII en Ré mineur) à la quarte supérieure. Les notes qui se trouvaient dépasser la tessiture de la flûte à bec dans le registre grave étaient habituellement jouées à l’octave, en supprimant ainsi certains sauts d’intervalles typiques de l’écriture de Corelli. À cette époque ces séquences de

figurations rapides à la flûte présentèrent sans aucun doute un défi pour l’interprète, avant que J. S. Bach et Antonio Vivaldi ne portent l’instrument à de nouveaux sommets techniques.

Roger North, un hobereau devenu avocat à Londres, écrivit qu’en Angleterre « les œuvres du grand Corelli […] devinrent pendant longtemps la musique la plus appréciée, dont personne ne semblait se lasser ; dont les qualités semblent ne jamais s’atténuer, et on se demande si elles le pourront jamais, car s’il existe une musique immortelle, celle des consorts de Corelli l’est très certainement. » Bien que les Anglais fussent de toute évidence plus impressionnés par les sonates à deux, en 1701 et 1702 Walsh commença à publier ce que North appelait consorts : les Sonate a 3 pour deux violons et autre instrument, éditées en Italie pendant les années 1681 – 1694 et déjà disponibles auprès de l’éditeur Roger depuis plusieurs années (1689 – 1698). Là encore, Corelli ne pensait pas à ce que nous appelons « basse continue », mais plutôt à un violone ou un archiluth avec orgue (op. I et III), violone ou clavecin (op. II) ou seulement violone (op. IV). Walsh publia un arrangement de six sur les douze sonates de l’op. IV transcrites for two Flutes and a Bass en 1702, là encore « avec l’approbation d’éminents Maîtres ». Nous savons que Paisible et Visconti jouèrent au moins deux fois « un morceau de musique instrumentale [ou sonate] du grand Arcangelo Corelli pour flûte et violon » à Drury Lane ; il s’agit probablement d’un arrangement tiré d’une des éditions Walsh. De toute évidence l’intérêt envers les Sonate a 3 s’accentuait : en 1705 Walsh publia un recueil complet des opus 1 à 4, transformant sa bataille contre le collègue Roger en une véritable guerre à celui qui publierait l’édition la plus ‘correcte’

11 Français ou ‘fidèle’ (c’est-à-dire sans coquilles). Un deuxième recueil d’arrangements parut en 1707 sous le titre de Sonatas for 2 Flutes and a Bass, spécifiant qu’il s’agissait d’une « anthologie des meilleures œuvres », en réalité les sonates n. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 et 7 de l’op. II. Walsh publia encore deux arrangements pour flûte à bec des sonates en duo op. V en 1707 : les n.

3 et 4, choisies parmi les pièces plus exigeantes de la première partie de l’opus. Bizarrement, ils les imprima avec une collection de sonates en trio pour deux flûtes à bec et ‘une basse’ composées par l’allemand Johann Christoph Pez, un disciple de Corelli qui n’avait aucun lien avec l’Angleterre. La page de garde mentionne que les sonates en duo avaient été « savamment transposées pour convenir à une flûte et une basse, sans toutefois modifier la tonalité dans laquelle elles furent composées ».

Autrement dit, un stratagème avait été utilisé pour garder la tonalité originale. Les passages comprenant des notes dans le registre grave hors tessiture pour la flûte alto avaient été transposés à l’octave.

Dans la sonate n. 4, les passages de jeu en double ou triple corde ornant les entrées de la fugue du second mouvement furent transformés en passages mélodiques. Une annonce publicitaire de l’édition informait que les sonates étaient « entièrement ornées avec les graces (ornementations libres) appropriées par un maître éminent. » Est-il possible que Banister ait été l’auteur de ces graces du mouvement lent ? North fit l’éloge de « tous ces élégants agréments pour les voix et les instruments qui sont enseignés par les maîtres italiens (et peut-être surclassés par l’anglais Banister) [et] ces splendides ornementations dont nous avons été informés. » Malgré leur publication anonyme et en sourdine, les

ornements de ces mouvements lents de Corelli semblent avoir été les premières à voir le jour.

Les versions de Corelli (« ou l’on a joint les agréemens des Adagio de cet ouvrage, composez par Mr. A. Corelli comme il les joue ») ne furent publiées qu’en 1710 par Roger et réimprimées par Walsh l’année suivante. Ces ornements étaient si chargés et exubérants que leur authenticité fut mise fortement en doute. Selon North « Quelque impertinent a publié une série continue de ce genre de choses dans les partitions des solos de Corelli […] À la seule vue de la partition on se demande comment toute cette vermine a pu ramper dans l’œuvre d’un tel maître […]

Les architectes raisonnables trouvent exécrable de broder une structure qui doit paraître imposante, et prendre ainsi à la légère une œuvre musicale est tout aussi aberrant ». Qu’aurait-il pensé de l’architecture baroque du continent européen ?! Roger répliqua avec un message promotionnel : « ceux qui sont curieux d’observer la copie originale de M. Corelli et ses lettres sur cet argument, peuvent les trouver chez Estienne Roger. » L’ornementation de ces arrangements de 1707 est moins fluide que celle de Corelli mais contient beaucoup de roulades irrégulières, ce qui démontre une connaissance de la pratique et du style italien.

Roger était effectivement en contact avec Corelli, avec qui il avait signé un contrat le 21 avril 1712 pour la publication de douze concerti grossi op. VI, contrat qui garantissait généreusement au compositeur pas moins de 150 copies gratuites, sans doute destinées à la vente en Italie. Mais Corelli disparut quelque neuf mois plus tard, le 8 janvier 1713, ce qui allait compliquer les termes de la transaction : la publication ne fut en effet annoncée que le 1er janvier 1715 par le

Sir John Hopkins allait décrire l’énorme engouement que cette édition allait créer dans le milieu musical anglais : immédiatement après avoir reçu la partition, le libraire Prévost, qui traitait les éditions néerlandaises, contacta Henry Needler, un violoniste amateur qui se produisait en concert privé chez John Loeillet. « M. Needler fut enthousiaste lorsqu’il vit ce trésor ; les partitions furent immédiatement ouvertes, et tous les interprètes jouèrent avec lui les douze concerts d’affilée, littéralement cloués sur place ». North commenta : « […] et à la fin arrivèrent les concertos, qui sont pour les musiciens comme le pain de la vie. » En 1719 Jeanne, la fille (et héritière de l’entreprise paternelle) de Roger, publia l’op. VI arrangé par Johann Christian Schickhardt sous forme de sonates en trio pour deux flûtes à bec et basse continue, sans la partie d’alto. Schickhardt, un instrumentiste à vent allemand et compositeur prolifique, publia une trentaine de recueils chez Roger, et travailla même comme représentant de la firme à Hambourg. Faite exception pour le troisième concerto, où il supprima carrément le troisième mouvement, et le huitième concerto (Fatto per la notte di Natale) dont il élimina deux mouvements et demi (dont la célèbre Pastorale ad libitum), il associa librement des mouvements de divers concertos pour créer ses sonates, en ajoutant à une de celles-ci une Giga de sa main. Walsh réimprima cet arrangement en 1720 comme « composé par un maître éminent », bien que le nom du ‘maître’ fut bien signalé dans un des catalogues de la maison d’édition.

Cinq ans plus tard, Walsh publia un deuxième arrangement : « Corelli’s XII Concertos Transpos’d for Flutes, viz. a Fifth, a Sixth, a Consort, and Voice Flute; the proper Flute being nam’d to each

Concerto, and so adapted to the Parts that they perform in Consort with the Violins and other Instruments throughout, the Whole being the first of this Kind yet Publish’d ». La spécification « in consort with » indiquait que l’œuvre était dans sa tonalité originelle. Une fois de plus, la partie d’alto est supprimée. La fifth flute était en fait une flûte soprano en do, la sixth flute une soprano en ré, la consort flute une alto en fa, et la voice flute une alto en ré. Huit des concertos furent transcrits pour deux altos, trois pour deux sopranos en ré ou pour voice flute et seulement un concerto pour soprano en do. Les autre tailles de flûtes devaient transposer sur la base de l’alto, en d’autre termes jouaient avec le doigté de l’alto. De cette façon l’arrangeur pouvait noter les parties de la voice flute ou de la flûte en ré du quatrième concerto en Fa Majeur, en obtenant ainsi la tonalité originale de Ré Majeur – qui est en effet celle de la partie concertante du violoncelle et de la basse continue.

Ici encore, les passages dans le grave qui dépassent la tessiture de l’instrument sont transposés à l’octave : à cette exception près, la transcription reste extrêmement fidèle à l’original.

Le grand nombre de transcription des sonates et concertos de Corelli ont une place à part entière dans le répertoire de la flute à bec au début du XVIIIème siècle et restent encore aujourd’hui une source d’inspiration très gratifiante.

Corelli e il flauto dolce Intorno al 1673 il flauto dolce di tipo barocco fu introdotto in Inghilterra dalla Francia (con la denominazione, oggi fuorviante, di flute), e nei successivi cinquant’anni lo strumento godette di una popolarità senza precedenti sia presso gli amatori sia presso i professionisti. Vennero pubblicati numerosi tutor, metodi per amatori contenenti tabelle delle diteggiature, alcune rudimentali istruzioni e selezioni delle composizioni vocali e strumentali più in voga arrangiate per flauto dolce contralto. Persons of quality (membri delle classi medie e alte), come lo studente di legge Dudley Ryder e il medico Claver Morris, prendevano lezioni e suonavano sia da soli sia con amici. Il costruttore di strumenti a fiato Peter Bressan, espatriato dalla Francia, fece fortuna vendendo flauti di alta qualità in tutte le taglie, anche se il contralto rimase lo strumento dominante nella letteratura cameristica e solistica. Suonatori professionisti di oboe, flauto traverso, violino, violoncello e clavicembalo si esibivano al flauto, come secondo strumento, nei teatri e nelle opera houses, in concerti pubblici e privati nonché a Corte. I più rinomati esecutori, a loro volta anche compositori, erano stranieri desiderosi di approfittare della fiorente vita musicale londinese; tra questi si contavano James Paisible, John Loeillet, Johann Ernst Galliard, Francesco Barsanti e Giuseppe Sammartini. Gli editori John Walsh a Londra ed Estienne Roger ad Amsterdam (che aveva intermediari a Londra) pubblicarono una gran quantità di musica per flauto dolce destinata al mercato degli amatori, musica per lo più composta per o da flautisti professionisti.

In questa Inghilterra assetata di musica, il rinomato compositore Arcangelo Corelli si fece apprezzare sin dal primo apparire delle sue dodici sonate dell’op. V, importate dall’Italia nel 1700 grazie a un’impresa commerciale dei violinisti John Banister II e Robert King, entrambi suonatori anche di flauto dolce. La raccolta venne immediatamente ristampata sia da Walsh sia da Roger, che si contesero le vendite in una vera e propria battaglia editoriale. Gasparo Visconti – altrimenti noto come ‘Gasperini’, collega di Banister al Drury Lane Theatre nonché ex allievo di Corelli – lavorò a Londra dal 1702 al 1705, periodo in cui contribuì alla popolarità di queste sonate facendole eseguire in quei brevi concerti denominati entertainments, ‘intrattenimenti’, che venivano proposti durante gli intervalli a teatro. Al giorno d’oggi vengono chiamate ‘sonate a solo’ e si ritiene siano state composte per violino e basso continuo, benché l’intestazione originale italiana, riportata da Roger e da Walsh, reciti «violino e violone o cimbalo», attestandone quindi l’originaria concezione di sonate a due.

Corelli pare non abbia scritto nemmeno un singolo brano originale per flauto dolce; ciononostante, vennero realizzati per questo strumento numerosi arrangiamenti delle sue composizioni per archi. Per rendersi conto dell’importanza del flauto dolce, basti pensare che nel 1702 Walsh diede alle stampe un arrangiamento anonimo delle ultime cinque sonate e della Follia dall’op. V per a Flute and a Bass

15 Italiano – enfatizzando in tal modo la loro natura di duo –, realizzato «con l’approvazione di alcuni eminenti maestri». Le due parti vengono denominate “Fluto Primo” e “Fluto Basso”, sebbene quest’ultima parte, oltre ad essere numerata per il basso continuo, necessiterebbe di notevoli modifiche nel caso si volesse effettivamente suonarla con un flauto dolce basso. Che Banister e King abbiano avuto un ruolo nell’arrangiamento? Lo stesso Walsh potrebbe non essere stato a conoscenza dell’esatta identità dell’arrangiatore, altrimenti avrebbe probabilmente sfruttato la notorietà del suo nome, proprio come fece in un annuncio pubblicitario nel 1705 in occasione della revisione fatta da Visconti delle opere I-IV. Con l’eccezione della Follia – che sul flauto dolce risulta ancora più impegnativa che al violino, con salti fino al fa e al sol della terza ottava raramente osservabili nella letteratura flautistica pubblicata in Inghilterra in quel periodo – le sonate della seconda parte dell’op. V, costituite da movimenti di danza, sono tecnicamente meno impegnative delle sonate da chiesa della prima parte; questa maggiore facilità è forse il motivo per cui vennero scelte per la raccolta del 1702.

L’arrangiatore (o l’editore) modificò l’ordine delle prime quattro sonate, scambiando la prima coppia di sonate con la seconda. Traspose tre delle sei composizioni una terza minore più in alto (tipica trasposizione per flauto dolce nell’epoca barocca), una sola sonata una seconda minore verso l’alto e, infine, trascrisse la Follia e la sonata che compare nella presente registrazione (Sonata n. 7, originariamente in re minore) una quarta giusta verso l’alto. Le note troppo gravi per il flauto contralto sono di norma state trasposte all’ottava

alta, appiattendo talvolta i caratteristici intervalli corelliani. Sul flauto le vivaci figurazioni presenti in questi brani risultarono sicuramente impegnative per l’epoca, prima che J.S. Bach e A. Vivaldi stabilissero nuovi traguardi tecnici per lo strumento.

Roger North, gentiluomo di campagna divenuto avvocato, scrisse che in Inghilterra «le opere del grande Corelli […] furono per lungo tempo la sola musica per cui ci si entusiasmasse. Sembrava non bastassero mai, né la loro virtù si è ancora esaurita; e ci si domanda se mai si esaurirà, perché se la musica può essere immortale, i consort di Corelli certamente lo saranno». Benché in un primo momento gli inglesi siano rimasti apparentemente più colpiti dalle sonate a due, nel 1701 e 1702 Walsh iniziò a pubblicare quelli che North chiamava consort, ovvero le Sonate a 3 per due violini ed altri strumenti, originariamente pubblicate in Italia tra il 1681 e il 1694, e disponibili nel catalogo di Roger già da diversi anni (1691-1698). Ancora una volta la concezione corelliana del basso continuo differisce dalla nostra: troviamo infatti indicati violone o arciliuto e organo (op. I e III), violone o clavicembalo (op. II), e soltanto violone (op. IV). Nel 1702 Walsh diede alle stampe un arrangiamento di sei delle dodici sonate dell’op. IV ‘accomodate’ for two Flutes and a Bass, ancora una volta «con l’approvazione di alcuni eminenti maestri». Per due volte venne annunciata l’esecuzione, da parte di Paisible e Visconti, di «un brano di musica strumentale [ossia una sonata] del grande Arcangelo Corelli per flauto e violino» al Drury Lane, presumibilmente un arrangiamento da una delle raccolte pubblicate.

L’interesse nelle Sonate a 3 stava evidentemente crescendo: nel 1705 Walsh pubblicò una raccolta

16 completa delle opere I-IV, portando la sua battaglia con Roger ai livelli di una vera e propria guerra commerciale su chi dei due offrisse l’edizione più ‘corretta’ o ‘esatta’ (senza errori di stampa). Una seconda raccolta di arrangiamenti, Sonatas for 2 Flutes and a Bass, apparve nel 1707, con l’avviso di trattarsi di «un’antologia delle sue composizioni più scelte», sebbene in effetti si trattasse delle sonate nn. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 e 7 dall’op. II. Walsh licenziò due ulteriori arrangiamenti per flauto dolce dalle sonate a due dell’op. V nel 1707, questa volta le nn. 3 e 4, tratte dalle sonate da chiesa tecnicamente più ardue della prima parte. Stranamente, queste vennero allegate ad una raccolta di triosonate per due flauti e «un basso» del compositore tedesco Johann Christoph Pez, un seguace di Corelli che non aveva relazioni con l’Inghilterra. Nel frontespizio si asserisce che le sonate a due erano state «trasposte ad arte e adattate per flauto e basso, pur mantenendole nella tonalità in cui erano state composte». In altre parole, venne trovata una soluzione per lasciarle nella tonalità originale. I passaggi comprendenti note al disotto dell’estensione del flauto dolce contralto sono stati di norma trasposti di un’ottava. Nella Sonata n. 4 i passaggi in doppie e triple corde che ornano le entrate della fuga sono stati trasformati in passaggi melodici. Un annuncio pubblicitario recitava che le sonate erano state «interamente ornate con le idonee graces (ornamentazioni libere) da un eminente maestro». Che fosse Banister l’autore delle graces nei movimenti lenti? North lodava «tutte quelle fioriture delle voci e degli strumenti insegnate dai maestri Italiani (superati forse dall’inglese Banister) [e] quegli

splendidi ornamenti di cui abbiamo i resoconti».

Nonostante la loro pubblicazione anonima e in sordina, le ornamentazioni di questi movimenti lenti sembrano essere state le prime mai pubblicate di un’opera di Corelli.

Le versioni originali di Corelli («con gli ornamenti degli Adagi composti dal Sig. Corelli come lui stesso li esegue») non vennero pubblicate da Roger che nel 1710, e ristampate da Walsh l’anno successivo. Gli ornamenti ‘corelliani’ erano così ricchi ed esuberanti che fecero sorgere considerevoli dubbi sulla loro autenticità. North scrisse che «qualche arrogante ha pubblicato un flusso continuo di questo genere di cose nelle partiture dei soli di Corelli […] Dalla semplice vista della stampa chiunque si domanderebbe come tanti parassiti abbiano potuto infiltrarsi nell’opera di un tale maestro […] Gli architetti giudiziosi aborriscono qualsiasi ricamo su una struttura che debba apparire grandiosa, e prendere alla leggera una composizione musicale non è meno assurdo».

Cosa avrebbe pensato North dell’architettura barocca sul continente europeo?! Roger rispose con un annuncio pubblicitario: «coloro che fossero curiosi di vedere l’originale del Sig. Corelli e le lettere da lui scritte su questo argomento possono farlo a casa di Estienne Roger». Le ornamentazioni degli arrangiamenti per flauto del 1707 sono meno fluenti di quelle corelliane, tuttavia utilizzano in abbondanza le veloci figurazioni irregolari tipiche di queste ultime, dimostrando familiarità con la prassi e lo stile italiani.

Roger era effettivamente in contatto con Corelli, con il quale il 21 aprile 1712 aveva firmato un contratto per la pubblicazione dei dodici concerti

17 Italiano grossi dell’op. VI, contratto in cui al compositore venivano generosamente offerte non meno di 150 copie omaggio, destinate presumibilmente ad essere vendute in Italia. Tuttavia Corelli morì meno di nove mesi dopo, l’8 gennaio 1713, fatto questo che complicò la realizzazione dell’accordo: infatti, non fu che fino al primo gennaio 1715 che il rappresentante londinese di Roger poté annunciare la pubblicazione dell’op. VI. Sir John Hawkins descrisse la grande emozione dei musicisti locali all’uscita in Inghilterra di questa raccolta. Non appena ricevette la musica, il libraio Prévost, che si occupava di pubblicazioni olandesi, la portò da Henry Needler, un appassionato violinista amatoriale che in quel momento stava esibendosi in un concerto privato nella casa di John Loeillet. «Il Sig. Needler si entusiasmò alla vista di un simile tesoro; le parti vennero immediatamente disposte sui leggii, e lui e gli altri musicisti suonarono di seguito tutti e dodici i concerti, senza alzarsi dalla sedia». North commentò: «[...] e infine giunsero i concerti, ognuno dei quali è come il pane della vita per i musicisti».

Nel 1719 Jeanne, la figlia di Roger ed erede dell’impresa paterna, pubblicò un arrangiamento dell’op. VI in forma di triosonate per due flauti dolci e basso continuo, realizzato da Johann Christian Schickhardt omettendo la parte della viola. Schickhardt, uno strumentista a fiato e prolifico compositore tedesco, pubblicò non meno di trenta raccolte per l’editore Roger, e lavorò addirittura come rappresentante di quest’ultimo quando viveva ad Amburgo. Con l’eccezione del terzo concerto, di cui semplicemente omise il terzo movimento, e l’ottavo Fatto per la notte

di Natale – di cui omise due movimenti e mezzo, inclusa la celebre Pastorale ad libitum – egli abbinò liberamente movimenti da diversi concerti per creare le sue sonate, a una delle quali aggiunse una semplice Giga di suo pugno. Walsh ristampò tale arrangiamento nel 1720 come composto «da un eminente maestro», anche se questa volta, in uno dei cataloghi della casa editrice, fornì il nome del ‘maestro’.

Cinque anni più tardi Walsh pubblicò un secondo arrangiamento: Corelli’s XII Concertos Transpos’d for Flutes, viz. a Fifth, a Sixth, a Consort, and Voice Flute; the proper Flute being nam’d to each Concerto, and so adapted to the Parts that they perform in Consort with the Violins and other Instruments throughout, the Whole being the first of this Kind yet Publish’d.

In Consort with stava a significare che i brani venivano mantenuti nelle tonalità originali. Ancora una volta la parte della viola è omessa. Il fifth flute (‘flauto di quinta’) era un flauto dolce soprano in do, il sixth flute (‘flauto di sesta’) un flauto soprano in re, il consort flute un flauto contralto in fa, e il voice flute (‘flauto di voce’) un flauto contralto in re. Otto concerti vennero arrangiati per due contralti, tre per due sixth flute o voice flute (entrambi strumenti in re), e uno per due soprani in do.

Le altre taglie venivano trattate come strumenti traspositori in relazione al contralto in fa; in altre parole, potevano essere suonate con le diteggiature del contralto. In tale maniera l’arrangiatore poteva, ad esempio, scrivere in fa maggiore le parti del sixth flute o del voice flute del Concerto n. 4, facendo sì che gli strumenti suonassero nella tonalità originale di re maggiore, come mostrato

18 Menu dalla parte del violoncello del concertino e dal basso continuo. Una volta di più, i passaggi che scendono oltre l’estensione grave del flauto vengono trasposti all’ottava alta, ma a parte questo accorgimento l’arrangiamento segue l’originale quasi nota per nota.

I numerosi arrangiamenti delle sonate e dei concerti di Corelli costituivano agli inizi del diciottesimo secolo una parte saliente del repertorio del flauto dolce, e rimangono per noi ancora oggi una gratificante fonte d’ispirazione.
