Cela m’a toujours tenu à cœur.

you recorded this ViValdi programme with your ensemble 415 in 2006. why did you choose this composer at that precise point in your career? chiara banchini. The programmes I chose for Ensemble 415 often showed a preference for concer-

tos whose solo parts I could assign to members of the ensemble. That was always a major concern for me. When I taught at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, I was lucky enough to be training extremely gifted young musicians who deserved the chance to appear as soloists. I very much enjoyed playing as equals with them: I took immense pleasure in seeing and hearing them take their performances so seriously. I also think there can be no better teaching method than giving young musicians a chance to appear in concert. It’s true that I often chose to record works by very little-known composers like Valentini, Bononcini, Geminiani, and so on. Obviously, that’s not the case with Vivaldi, but the concertos for four violins were really a great chance to let a large proportion of the musicians of the ensemble play as soloists. What’s more, L’estro armonico is an outstanding work, really first-rate Vivaldi: that in itself made it worthwhile for us to record the concertos for four violins. although ViValdi was only rediscoVered in the twentieth century, he’s now Very often recorded, especially his instrumental music. do you still find he can surprise you? c. b. I think it’s more and more difficult today to be surprised by Vivaldi and his instrumental works.

Our role as musicians is to give other composers, just as inspired but much less known, a chance to be heard. But from time to time I am still surprised by the beauty of the Stabat Mater, for example, or by some of his opera arias, which can be quite astonishing.

L’estro armonico is diVided into four cycles of three concertos, with each triptych made up of a concerto for four Violins, one for two, and one for solo Violin. you broke the logic by choosing to put only the four-Violin concertos on this disc . . . c. b. As I said before, it was really the wish to give all the musicians in the ensemble a solo role that

guided me. it’s generally agreed that the op.3 set seemed reVolutionary when it was published in 1711 and that it made its composer’s reputation throughout europe. as someone who has practised the italian repertory of the seVenteenth and eighteenth centuries for many years and is Very familiar with it, what do you think was so innoVatiVe in L’estro armonico for its time? c. b. Each concerto in this collection is a little gem: not only does Vivaldi handle with equal skill all the

possibilities of dialogue between one, two, three or four soloists, but the textures and the harmony are full of innovations for the period. No other Italian composer ever presented a work so spatially structured, in which all the soloists interact, either mirroring each other or in pairs. It’s a real game between the musicians, who take turns to occupy centre stage, imitate each other, then float a new musical idea picked up by the others. It’s a thrilling experience for each musician. are there seVeral different ViValdis? one for op.3, one for op.4 (La stravaganza), one for op.8 (iL cimento deLL’armonia e deLL’inventione, which includes the Four seasons)? do these collections show a progression in his compositional style? c. b. Yes, I think Vivaldi renewed himself artistically in the course of time as he produced new

works. His progression in terms of style and invention is constant. He’s one of those composers you 18 18

recognise immediately, like Bach, Mozart or Corelli. Imagine the astonishment The Four Seasons must have caused all over the world when the work was published! It has to be said, too, that Vivaldi also wrote less accomplished and more ‘repetitive’ pieces. It’s up to us musicians to select the real compositions. in these concertos for four Violins, is there an idea of fairly free dialogue for each of the soloists, or are there Very strict symmetries that must be respected? how did ViValdi organise the balance between the four solo Violins, and between them and the orchestra? c. b. Vivaldi organised a very balanced, symmetrical dialogue between the solo parts, which mirror

each other. That’s what is so fascinating. The texture is very clear, and it seems to me there’s nothing to add to make the discourse more transparent and easier to understand – to hear. All of this implies that the soloists must conduct their dialogue using the same language. In that respect, I have the impression that you can hear the musicians were trained in my class and that, despite their strong individual personalities, the dialogue is very comprehensible. the orchestra is fairly light and luminous. what prompted you to opt for this choice of forces? c. b. In the score, which we’re lucky enough to have in facsimile, Vivaldi asks for a solo formation,

and it seems clear that the instruments shouldn’t be doubled. Each participant is either a soloist or a member of the ripieno. That’s what makes the orchestra light and luminous.

the concertos are written in a style rich in energy, contrasts and colours that’s Very typical of ViValdi. isn’t it tempting, as it were, to theatricalise the discourse – aboVe all when you haVe four soloists? c. b. You’re right, the theatre is implicit in the style of these concertos. But it seems to me that if

you respect the writing, you can express everything Vivaldi asked for. In the case of op.3, it isn’t necessary to theatricalise the discourse as you have to in other works – The Four Seasons, for instance. you are a pedagogue with a worldwide reputation who created the baroque Violin class at the centre de musique baroque de genèVe in 1977 before teaching at the schola cantorum basiliensis for twenty years. ensemble 415, which you founded in 1981, has always had your students as its members. is it important for you to be with them, in their midst? c. b. Yes, undoubtedly. And I’m really very happy to have lived alongside my students, who have

brought me so much on a human level. What better life could one imagine for a teacher and musician? if you had the opportunity to rerecord this programme today, would you change anything? c. b. Is it very pretentious to say that I would do the same thing over again? Of course, the personality

of each musician would be different but I dare imagine that the complicity, the friendship and the pleasure in dialogue would be identical. Interview: 5 April 2015 21 21
