MENU si Vous aViez aujourD’hui la possibilité De réenregistrer ce programme, y changeriez-Vous quelque chose ? c. b. Non, ce programme me semble toujours valable.

‘ThE GrEAT PLEAsUrE Of mULTIPLE ImPrOVIsATION’ ChIaRa BaNChINI

you’Ve maDe many recorDings of the italian baroque repertory. Where Do you get these electiVe affinities With Valentini, but also ViValDi, geminiani, tartini, bononcini, corelli anD albinoni?

chiara banchini. I think the fact that Italian is quite literally my mother tongue and that my family is Italian on my mother’s side helps me to understand the language of this music. I am happy in Italy, I love the sunshine and the heat, and I think I have a good understanding of the expressiveness of Italian music. I’m convinced that, as for a singer, pronunciation is a key element in perceiving the text. And I’d add to that my love for the chamber music and the very immediate and simple expressive appeal of the Italian music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Valentini, to Whom you chose to DeVote this recorDing With your ensemble 415 in 2001, is a little-knoWn figure Who long remaineD in the shaDoW of other composers, notably corelli. hoW DiD you DiscoVer him? is there much surViVing eViDence of his life anD Work?

c. b. As was very often the case with my recordings, the valentini project bears witness to the collaboration I initiated with my pupils. David Plantier, whom you can hear as a soloist in concertos nos.11 and 3 on this disc, made an edition of valentini’s Concertos op.7 which he presented as a graduation dissertation at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The music was so interesting and his editorial work was so precise that I immediately suggested he should prepare the score for a recording. David did an immense amount of work on it, and I’m really very grateful to him. At that time, only the concerto for four violins recorded by Reinhard Goebel was at all known.

16 16

c. b. valentini was a violinist in Corelli’s orchestra and he was well known in Rome for his compositions and his virtuosity. But I don’t think his fame spread beyond Rome or Italy. It’s even said that, when Corelli returned to Rome after spending some time in Naples, he didn’t get a triumphal welcome because in the meantime valentini had carved out an important place for himself there and was much admired. That supposedly made Corelli so ill that he died! valentini was a violinist-composer. He was quite daring and innovative in style, especially in his violin writing, but his virtuoso pieces rich in colours and bizarreries subsequently disappeared from view and he was totally forgotten. Valentini lays claim in his Works to a certain capricious freeDom, to humour anD the pleasure of the ear. is this op.7 set the finest illustration of that?

c. b. Yes, absolutely. This violinist-composer dedicated his entire output to the violin. I think his op.7 is the most interesting and accomplished of his publications.

Who Was Valentini anD What Was his role in rome? DiD he haVe a reputation outsiDe italy in his lifetime?

one senses in these concertos a Vigour, a Virtuosity anD a lyricism that are fairly close to ViValDi, Who Was a Violinist like Valentini anD his exact contemporary – the publication of this op.7 Dates from 1710, While the Venetian composer’s L’estro armonico Was issueD in 1711. Do you knoW if there Was any contact betWeen them, frienDship or mutual influence?

c. b. I don’t know if there was ever any contact between the two violinists but it must be admitted that vivaldi’s output is in general much more accomplished and important. valentini belongs to the category of the violinist-composers and not of the composer-violinists. For me, Corelli, Albinoni, Tartini, Bononcini, whom I have also recorded, are true composer-violinists. Does Valentini leaVe room for improVisation or giVe the performer a certain freeDom for the caDenzas anD in the choice of the instrumental forces or the continuo?

c. b. We worked a lot on the question of improvisation, which is very important in these concertos. I must insist on this point: each soloist had a very personal, carefully researched and convincing approach. The result is still persuasive fifteen years later. We also took great pleasure in multiple improvisation at the many concerts we gave after this recording.

18 18

c. b. Yes, it’s true, I often chose my programmes bearing in mind the solo parts I could give to members of the ensemble. When I taught at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, I was lucky enough to be training extremely gifted young musicians who deserved the chance to appear as soloists. I very much enjoyed playing as equals with them: I took immense pleasure in seeing and hearing them take their performances so seriously. I also think there can be no better teaching method than giving young musicians a chance to appear in concert. And they brought me so much on a human level! to go back some years in time, i belieVe you DiscoVereD the baroque Violin anD baroque music in general With sÁnDor Végh. What DiD you learn there that you haDn’t With the moDern Violin?

c. b. First of all, I discovered extremely interesting violin treatises of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that I had never studied during my conservatory years. I added to that the element of freedom in experimenting with ornamentation and improvisation that Baroque music left me. Finally, there was the pleasure of familiarising myself with a magnificent repertory that was still unknown when I started out as a ‘Baroque’ violinist in the 1970s. It’s true, too, that I had the good fortune to play a very fine violin of 1684, made by Nicola Amati in Cremona.

c. b. I tried to give my students a strict framework in which to hone their technique. I also did my best to leave them room for personal expression. I hope I didn’t produce a set of clones . . . The curriculum at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis includes a substantial component of training in musicology, music history, harmony and counterpoint, and improvisation. The library is fantastic, you can find everything you’re looking for, and nowadays online access to the world’s great libraries means it’s still possible to make significant discoveries. Students can also do a master’s degree in improvisation: I admire the young violinists of today who can improvise counterpoint with a violin. I’m sorry it wasn’t possible for me to do that, and I must admit I feel really left behind by the new generation of ‘classical’ musicians who have opened their ears to a world that we had no chance to explore during our studies back in my day. if you haD the opportunity to rerecorD this programme toDay, WoulD you change anything?

c. b. No, the programme still seems perfectly valid to me. On the other hand, I think we’ve made a great deal of technical progress: luthiers are more expert at setting up instruments and making gut strings, which means instruments now generally sound much better.
