Vous aVez enregistré ce programme en 2002 ; le disque a eu un grand succès et a été le premier d’une belle discographie sous le label alpha. aVec le recul, que représente-t-il dans le parcours des Witches ?

Freddy eichelberger. Nobody’s Jig correspond à l’arrivée de Sylvie Moquet dans l’ensemble

et illustre la suite de notre aventure commune, qui avait commencé à quatre musiciens dix ans auparavant. Ce disque est notre premier chez Alpha et représente sans doute la vraie fondation discographique du groupe. claire michon. Pour moi, Nobody’s Jig est surtout le début du son des Witches, un son à cinq,

qui au disque s’est fait avec Hugues Deschaux. Ce disque doit beaucoup aux rencontres : nous devions l’enregistrer aux États-Unis à l’automne 2001, mais nous n’avons pas pu partir à cause des événements du 11-Septembre. Hugues Deschaux puis Jean-Paul Combet, que nous avons alors sollicités, se sont lancés dans l’aventure avec nous. Ce disque a visiblement marqué : on vient encore nous en parler aujourd’hui et l’on s’aperçoit qu’il est « entré dans la vie » de beaucoup de gens. sylVie moquet. Oui, mes amis disent souvent que leurs enfants ont beaucoup dansé sur ce disque.

Une petite fille nous appelle « Les Ch’tis-Ouizes » ! pascale boquet. Il est devenu presque mythique, pour les auditeurs comme pour les jeunes

musiciens qui découvrent aujourd’hui que nous sommes à l’origine de cet enregistrement. odile édouard. Ce disque est en effet encore très actuel, ce n’est certainement pas un disque du

passé. Il correspond particulièrement bien à ce que nous avons fait et que nous continuons de faire.

Je pense que cela tient aussi à notre expérience de groupe à l’époque : nous jouions ensemble depuis dix ans et avions déjà beaucoup donné ces pièces en concert. Je pense que c’est pour cela que ce disque a eu un certain succès et qu’il reste très vivant encore aujourd’hui.

qu’est-ce qui Vous a conduits à l’époque à enregistrer ces danses sélectionnées dans The english Dancing MasTer publié en 1651 par John playFord ?

Freddy eichelberger. Faire ce disque avait un sens parce que nous jouions ces pièces ensemble en

concert depuis longtemps. L’envie de fixer les choses existait déjà. claire michon. Après notre premier disque, Fortune, nous avons cherché d’autres musiques

adaptées à notre formation, qui nous permettaient d’improviser, de faire des variations. Nous avons choisi ces danses parce qu’elles étaient ce que nous jouions de mieux à l’époque, avec lesquelles nous avions le sentiment de partager quelque chose d’important avec le public. Nous avons donc sélectionné les danses qui pouvaient constituer un programme de disque, partager nos enthousiasmes et nos émotions par rapport à cette musique qui nous émeut toujours autant aujourd’hui. sylVie moquet. Pour ma part, j’ai retrouvé dans Playford l’énergie rythmique de la musique tradi-

tionnelle irlandaise et la poésie du répertoire pour viole de gambe. odile édouard. Les choses étaient simples puisque le recueil du Dancing Master était déjà publié

et rassemblait des centaines de mélodies. Nous n’avions qu’à choisir celles qui nous plaisaient, qui nous parlaient le plus, sans avoir à nous lancer dans une recherche musicologique exceptionnelle. qui était ce mr John playFord ? son recueil était-il connu en France, notamment à la cour de Versailles ? pascale boquet. Playford était éditeur et son recueil a connu des dizaines de rééditions durant tout

le xVIIe siècle. The English Dancing Master était donc extrêmement connu. Aux xVIe et xVIIe siècles, la notion de compositeur identifié comme tel et d’œuvre sacralisée par la suite n’existent pas. Une 8 8

claire michon. Il appartient à une dynastie d’éditeurs – son fils s’occupera des dernières rééditions

de son recueil, dans les années 1720-1730. Au fil des éditions, certains airs s’ajoutaient, d’autres disparaissaient en fonction de la mode. Les rééditions du Dancing Master ont probablement contribué à la diffusion des mélodies et des danses vers le continent – en France sous le nom de contredanse, contraction de country dance. pascale boquet. L’âge d’or de Versailles correspond à la fin de la vie de Playford. Les pièces de

ses débuts sont plus proches des branles de village ou des gavottes comme celles publiées par Praetorius en 1612. claire michon. Les différentes publications du recueil de Playford ont pu avoir un rôle dans la

transition entre la fin de la Renaissance et les danses de bal à la cour. On trouve même certaines danses de Playford dans les recueils de contredanses des maîtres à danser parisiens du début du xVIIIe siècle. ces danses recréent une atmosphère Féerique et Fantasque, dont on ne déFinit pas immédiatement les contours. au xViie siècle, la Frontière entre tradition orale et musique saVante était très souple ?

Freddy eichelberger. C’est une question que l’on se pose aujourd’hui, au xxIe siècle, de manière

un peu compliquée. Nous jouons tous différents répertoires – savant, traditionnel ou actuel – et nous connaissons tous les chansons diffusées à la radio. Donc aujourd’hui aussi les genres s’interpénètrent. Notre culture est faite de ce que l’on entend autour de nous, des airs sur lesquels nous avons dansé…

grande quantité d’airs circulent, édités souvent sous la forme d’arrangements. Playford est donc plus un compilateur ou un arrangeur qu’un compositeur.

odile édouard. Il faut noter cette particularité de la cour d’Angleterre au xVIIe siècle : on y était

extrêmement friand de tous ces airs à danser et chansons populaires. C’est ce qui a favorisé la publication de tant de recueils de musique d’airs à danser – ce qui n’était pas le cas en France, où la cour cloisonnait un peu tout. pascale boquet. Pour rebondir sur l’interpénétration des genres, citons les ballades populaires qui

se sont retrouvées dans des pièces extrêmement complexes pour luth ou pour clavecin, dans des contrepoints à cinq voix… La fusion des genres est là évidente. claire michon. La circulation des musiques profite aussi de l’absence de frontière entre musique

profane et religieuse : ces airs sont également utilisés dans le répertoire sacré, comme La Monica, à la fois chanson et danse sous divers titres partout en Europe et utilisée par Girolamo Frescobaldi dans la Missa sopra la Monica. le recueil de playFord répertorie des airs à danser. comment aVez-Vous traVaillé pour recréer ces musiques et leur polyphonie à partir des seules mélodies ? odile édouard. La chose essentielle est qu’il n’y a pas de partition complète. Dans son recueil,

Playford n’a noté que les mélodies et les pas de danse qui leur correspondent. Il n’y a aucune basse – elles sont totalement réinventées par Freddy et Pascale – et les instrumentations ne sont pas notées. De nombreux ensembles d’ailleurs se sont réapproprié ces musiques d’une tout autre façon que nous, notamment avec de la percussion. Tout est possible. claire michon. Playford n’avait pas pour objectif de publier des musiques mais d’expliquer les

danses. Il n’a noté les mélodies que pour mémoire.

odile édouard. Ce serait comparable aux violoneux d’Auvergne d’aujourd’hui, qui disposent juste

d’un aide-mémoire de la mélodie sur laquelle ils improvisent des variations. sylVie moquet. Nous nous sommes aussi appuyés sur les pratiques de l’époque, décrites dans de nombreux traités anglais, qui présentent les différentes manières d’improviser sur une mélodie ou sur une basse. pascale boquet. Lorsque s’est posée la question de savoir comment harmoniser ces airs, les

choses se sont faites de manière très naturelle avec Freddy. La plupart du temps, en écoutant la mélodie, nous harmonisions quasiment de la même façon. Cela s’est fait avec un naturel et une homogénéité de pensée incroyables. ces mélodies à danser étaient-elles à l’origine des airs à chanter, aVec des paroles ? pascale boquet. Nous avons retrouvé de nombreux ballad-tunes effectivement, qui étaient chantés.

Ils avaient leurs paroles, parfois un nombre impressionnant de couplets. Pour certains, les paroles sont perdues mais à la lecture du titre, on imagine qu’il s’agissait d’une véritable histoire. claire michon. Une même mélodie peut avoir des paroles différentes ; un texte peut aussi être

associé à l’air d’un autre titre. Certaines mélodies changent également de texte selon le pays. Nous avons pris en compte les textes de deux façons différentes : dans certains cas, nous connaissions le texte et en avons respecté le caractère ; dans d’autres cas, nous avons choisi la mélodie avant de trouver le texte. Stingo, par exemple, est devenu une ballade mélancolique parce que nous l’avions abordé dans ce tempo avant de découvrir qu’il s’agissait d’une chanson à boire. Pour moi, ce n’est pas un contre-sens.

Freddy eichelberger. Si l’on prend un thème comme Rights of Man, on constate à l’écoute de

toutes les versions jouées par différents groupes irlandais d’énormes différences de tempo et de caractère. pascale boquet. L’utilisation de Drive the Cold Winter Away et The Beggar Boy dans le film Michael

Kohlhaas d’Arnaud des Pallières pour la scène la plus dramatique est un merveilleux exemple des caractères différents que peuvent revêtir ces ballades. odile édouard. Cette question aborde finalement la « marque de fabrique Witches » : nous avons

toujours cherché à avoir une expression musicale extrêmement vocale sans pour autant nous départir de la dynamique de la danse. après noboDy’s Jig, Vous aVez exploré et enregistré d’autres traditions d’autres pays. qu’est-ce qui Vous attire, en tant que musiciens, touJours loin des sentiers battus ? claire michon. Nous ne nous sommes jamais senti pressés de faire un disque. Par contre, nous

sommes collectivement pressés par l’envie de réaliser les projets qui nous tiennent à cœur. Nous avons tous les cinq, individuellement et collectivement, un goût pour le voyage, la recherche, les choses qui ne vont pas d’elles-mêmes. C’est la musique qui nous touche, qu’elle relève de l’oralité et de la tradition, ou qu’elle soit plus écrite et « savante ». L’image de l’ensemble colle à sa réalité. odile édouard. Il y a une pratique maintenant assez généralisée chez la plupart des ensembles de

musique ancienne de s’ouvrir au répertoire traditionnel. Ce qui nous attire est le côté encore très actuel et très vivant de ces pratiques populaires. pascale boquet. Et même lorsque nous enregistrons un programme moins « traditionnel », plus

savant, notre pratique et notre familiarité avec les musiques populaires vivantes le nourrissent de façon un peu moins classique.

odile édouard. Le plaisir de jouer ces musiques populaires réside bien sûr aussi dans le contact

avec le public : c’est une musique qui touche directement. C’est très valorisant et même grisant de profiter de la joie ressentie par le public. si Vous aViez auJourd’hui la possibilité de réenregistrer ce programme, y changeriez-Vous quelque chose ?

Freddy eichelberger. Pour moi, la seule chose qui justifierait de revenir à ce programme serait de

l’enregistrer live. odile édouard. Nous pourrions aussi faire un second volume du Dancing Master. En concert, nous

jouons de nombreuses autres pièces du recueil, que nous pourrions enregistrer. Nous jouerions certainement ces pièces différemment, du fait de notre évolution durant ces treize années passées, mais ce ne serait pas volontaire. claire michon. Oui, nous ferions autrement mais sans chercher consciemment à le faire. Un disque

est un peu comme une photographie ; j’écoute ce disque avec le même plaisir que lorsque je regarde des photos de famille d’il y a quinze ans, sans comparaison avec aujourd’hui, sans jugement. Si nous refaisions un Nobody’s Jig, le challenge serait en effet de le faire live. sylVie moquet. Cela pourrait être l’occasion de réunir les « Guest Witches » rencontrés sur les autres

projets au fil des années, pour qu’ils y apportent leur grain de sel ! odile édouard. Ce qui est certain, c’est que nous y trouverions autant de plaisir.

Freddy eichelberger. Nobody’s Jig coincided with the arrival of Sylvie Moquet in the group and

illustrates the second phase of our shared adventure, which had begun with four musicians ten years earlier. This disc was our first on Alpha and probably represents the true beginnings of the group in the world of recording. claire michon. For me, Nobody’s Jig is above all the start of the sound of Les Witches, the sound of

the five of us together, which was created on record with Hugues Deschaux. This disc owes a lot to the people we’ve met: we were supposed to record it in the United States in the autumn of 2001, but we weren’t able to get there because of the events of 9/11. So Hugues Deschaux and then Jean-Paul Combet, both of whom we approached, embarked on the adventure with us. It’s a recording that has visibly left its mark: people still come to talk to us about it today and we realise that it’s become ‘part of the lives’ of many music lovers. sylVie moquet. Yes, my friends often tell me their children have danced a lot to this disc. There’s a

little girl who calls us ‘Les Ch’tis-Ouizes’! pascale boquet. It’s become almost legendary, both for listeners and for young musicians when

they discover today that we’re the people who made this recording. odile édouard. Yes, this CD still seems to be relevant to people today; it’s certainly not a disc of

the past. It reflects especially well what we have done and are still doing. I think that’s also due to our experience as a group at the time: we had been playing together for ten years and had already performed these pieces very frequently in concert. I believe that’s why this disc enjoyed a certain success and still remains very much alive even today.

you recorded this programme in 2002; the disc Was a big success and became the First title in a distinguished discography on the alpha label. With hindsight, What Would you say it represents in the career oF les Witches?

What Was it at the time that prompted you to record these dances chosen From John playFord’s 1651 publication The english Dancing MasTer? Freddy eichelberger. There was a point to making this CD, because we’d been playing these pieces

together in concert for a long time. The desire to give our interpretations a permanent existence was already there. claire michon. After our first recording, Fortune, we looked around for other pieces of music suitable

for our group, which would allow us to improvise, to play variations on the tunes. We chose these dances because they were what we played best at the time, the pieces that gave us the feeling we were sharing something important with the audience. So we selected the dances that would make up a CD programme, that would allow us to share the enthusiasm and the emotions we’ve invested in this music, which still moves us as much today. sylVie moquet. For my part, I found in Playford the rhythmic energy of Irish folk music and the poetry

of the repertory for viola da gamba. odile édouard. Things were pretty straightforward for us, since the Dancing Master collection was

already published and included hundreds of tunes. All we had to do was choose the ones we liked, the ones that appealed to us most, without having to embark on a big programme of musicological research.

Who Was John playFord? Was his collection knoWn in France, and notably at the court in Versailles? pascale boquet. Playford was a publisher, and his collection went through dozens of editions

throughout the seventeenth century. So The English Dancing Master was extremely well known.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the notion of a composer identified as such and a work 16 16

claire michon. He belonged to a dynasty of publishers – his son supervised the last reprints

of his collection, in the 1720s and 1730s. As one edition followed another, certain tunes would be added and others would disappear, following current fashion. The successive editions of the Dancing Master probably helped to make these melodies and dances known on the continent – in France they acquired the name ‘contredanse’, a contraction of ‘country dance’. pascale boquet. The golden age of Versailles coincided with the last years of Playford’s life. The

early pieces he published are closer to branles de village or gavottes of the kind published by Praetorius in 1612. claire michon. The various editions of Playford’s collection may have played a role in the transition

between the late Renaissance and the social dances of the seventeenth-century court. One even finds dances from Playford in the collections of contredanses made by the Parisian dancing masters of the early eighteenth century. these dances recreate a magical, Fantastical atmosphere, Whose outlines aren’t easy to deFine immediately. Would you say that the Frontier betWeen oral tradition and art music Was Very porous in the seVenteenth century?

Freddy eichelberger. That’s a question we ask ourselves today, in the twenty-first century, in a

rather complicated way. All of us perform different repertories – art, traditional or modern music – and we all know the songs that play on the radio. So genres interpenetrate today as well. Our culture is made up of what we hear around us, of the tunes we’ve danced to . . .

regarded as sacred once it was composed did not exist. A large number of tunes circulated and were often published in the form of arrangements. Playford was therefore more of a compiler or an arranger than a composer.

odile édouard. It’s worth mentioning a characteristic of the court of England in the seventeenth

century: people there were extremely keen on all these dance tunes and popular songs. It was this context that encouraged the publication of so many collections of the music of dance tunes – which wasn’t the case in France, where the court tended to compartmentalise everything. pascale boquet. To get back to the point about the interpenetration of genres, we might mention the

popular ballads that found their way into highly complex pieces for lute or harpsichord, in five-part counterpoint. The fusion of the genres is evident there. claire michon. The circulation of music also benefited from the absence of frontiers between sacred

and secular music: these tunes were also used in the religious repertory, like La Monica, which was both a song and dance under various titles all over Europe and was used by Girolamo Frescobaldi in his Missa sopra La Monica. playFord’s anthology is in Fact a collection oF dance tunes. hoW did you go about recreating this music polyphonically With only the melodies? odile édouard. The essential thing is that there isn’t a complete score. In his collection, Playford

printed only the melodies and the dance steps that correspond to them. There isn’t a bass line – our bass parts are totally reinvented by Freddy and Pascale – and the scoring isn’t indicated.

Indeed, many ensembles reappropriate this music in a quite different way from us, notably by adding percussion. Everything is possible. claire michon. Playford’s aim wasn’t to publish pieces of music but to explain the dances. He only

included the melodies for information. odile édouard. This would be comparable to fiddlers in Auvergne today, who just have an aide-

memoire of the melody on which they improvise variations.

treatises, which present the different ways of improvising on a melody or a bass. pascale boquet. When it came to the question of how to harmonise these tunes, it all happened very

naturally between Freddy and myself. Most of the time, on listening to the melody, we harmonised in virtually the same way. It all came together in the most natural way, with incredible homogeneity of conception.

Were these dance tunes originally intended to be sung, With Words? pascale boquet. Yes, we found numerous ‘ballad tunes’ that were sung. They had their words,

sometimes with an impressive number of verses. In other cases, the words are lost, but when you read the title you can imagine that it must have been a proper story. claire michon. A single melody can have different sets of words; a text can also be associated with

the tune of another title. Certain melodies also change text from one country to another. We treated the texts in two different ways: in some cases, we knew the text and respected its character; in other cases, we chose the melody before we found the text. Stingo, for instance, became a melancholic ballad because we had taken it at that tempo, before discovering it was actually a drinking song. In my opinion that’s not a misinterpretation.

Freddy eichelberger. If you take a theme like Rights of Man and then listen to all the versions

played by different Irish groups, you observe huge differences in tempo and character. pascale boquet. The utilisation of Drive the Cold Winter Away and The Beggar Boy for the most

dramatic scene in Arnaud des Pallières’s film Michael Kohlhaas is a wonderful example of the different characters these ballads can take on.

sylVie moquet. We also based our work on the practice of the period, described in numerous English

odile édouard. In the end, this question concerns Les Witches’ trademark style: we have always

tried to achieve an extremely vocal type of musical expression, yet without deviating from the dynamic of the dance. aFter noboDy’s Jig, you Went on to explore and record music From other traditions oF other countries. What is it that inVariably attracts you as musicians to repertory that’s oFF the beaten track? claire michon. We have never felt pressured into making a recording. On the other hand, we do

feel pressured collectively by the urge to realise projects which are close to our hearts. All five of us, individually and collectively, have a taste for travel, for exploration, for things that require some effort to achieve. It’s the music that touches us, whether it falls into the category of orality and tradition or of written, ‘art’ music. The image of the ensemble is in phase with its reality. odile édouard. Nowadays there’s a fairly general tendency in most of the early music ensembles to

open up to the traditional repertory. What attracts us is the very up-to-date, very lively side of these popular practices. pascale boquet. And even when we record a less ‘traditional’ programme, one that leans more

towards art music, our practice of and familiarity with living traditions of popular music nourishes our performances so that they become a bit less ‘classical’. odile édouard. Of course, the pleasure of playing this popular music also lies in the contact with

the audience: it’s music that touches people directly. It’s very gratifying and even intoxicating to take pleasure in the joy the audience feels.

iF you had the opportunity to rerecord these suites today, Would you change anything?

Freddy eichelberger. For me, the only thing that could justify coming back to this programme

would be to record it live. odile édouard. We could also do a second volume of the Dancing Master. In concert, we perform

many other pieces from the collection that we could record. We would certainly play these pieces differently, given the way we’ve evolved over the past thirteen years, but it wouldn’t be deliberate. claire michon. Yes, we’d play it another way but without consciously trying to do so. A recording is

a bit like a photograph; I listen to this disc with the same pleasure as when I look at family photos of fifteen years ago, without comparing with today, without judging. But it’s true, if we remade Nobody’s Jig, the challenge would to do it live. sylVie moquet. That could be the opportunity to bring together all the ‘Guest Witches’ we’ve met on

the other projects over the years, so that they could do their bit too! odile édouard. One thing’s for sure: we would still enjoy ourselves as much as ever.

Freddy eichelberger. Nobody’s Jig entstand, als Sylvie Moquet zu unserer Gruppe stieß. Die Auf-

nahme ist ein Meilenstein in unserem gemeinsamen Abenteuer, das zehn Jahre früher angefangen hatte, als wir noch zu viert waren. Diese CD ist die erste, die bei Alpha herauskam, und mit Sicherheit das eigentliche Debut unserer Gruppe auf dem Gebiet der Schallplattenaufnahmen. claire michon. Für mich ist Nobody’s Jig vor allem der Beginn des Sounds der Witches, ein Sound zu

fünft, der zusammen mit Hugues Deschaux auf der Schallplatte entstanden ist. Diese Platte verdankt viel dem Zufall: wir sollten sie ursprünglich im Herbst 2001 in den Vereinigten Staaaten aufnehmen, aber wegen der Ereignisse des 11. September konnten wir nicht abreisen. Hugues Deschaux und dann Jean-Paul Combet, die wir angesprochen hatten, waren bereit mitzumachen. entdecken, dass diese Aufnahme auf uns zurückgeht. odile édouard. Diese Platte ist tatsächlich noch sehr aktuell, sie ist sicher kein alter Hut. Sie ent-

spricht besonders gut dem, was wir damals gemacht haben und weiterhin machen. Ich denke, das hängt auch mit unserer damaligen Erfahrung als Gruppe zusammen: wir hatten zehn Jahre lang zusammen gespielt und diese Stücke oft in Konzerten gegeben. Ich meine, das ist der Grund dafür, dass die Platte einen solchen Erfolg hatte und bis heute sehr lebendig geblieben ist.

Was hat sie damals darauF gebracht, diese tänze aus dem 1651 Von John playFord herausgebenen The english Dancing MasTer auFzunehmen?

Freddy eichelberger. Diese Aufnahme machte deswegen Sinn, weil wir die Stücke seit langem in

Konzerten aufgeführt hatten. Wir hatten Lust, diese Dinge zu fixieren. claire michon. Nach Fortune, unserer ersten CD, waren wir auf der Suche nach anderen Musik-

stücken, die unserer Formation entsprachen, mit denen wir improvisieren, die wir variieren konnten.

Wir haben diese Tänze ausgewählt, weil sie das waren, was wir damals am besten gespielt haben und was uns das Gefühl verschaffte, dem Publikum etwas Wichtiges zu geben. Diese Tänze eigneten sich als Programm für eine Plattenaufnahme und konnten unsere Begeisterung und unsere Gefühle gegenüber dieser Art Musik vermitteln, die uns heute immer noch bewegt. sylVie moquet. Ich für mein Teil habe bei Playford vor allem die rhythmische Energie der traditionel-

len irischen Musik und die Poesie des Repertoires für Viola da gamba wiedergefunden. odile édouard. Die Dinge lagen einfach, weil die Sammlung des Dancing Master schon veröffent-

licht war und Hunderte von Melodien umfasste. Wir brauchten nur unter denen zu wählen, die uns am besten gefielen, ohne uns in große musikologische Forschungen stürzen zu müssen.

Wer War dieser mr. John playFord? War seine sammlung in Frankreich bekannt, Vor allem am hoF Von Versailles ? pascale boquet. Playford war Verleger, und seine Sammlung wurde während des ganzen 17.

Jahrhunderts dutzendfach neu aufgelegt. The English Dancing Master war daher außerordentlich bekannt. Im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert existierte der Begriff des eigenständigen, unantastbaren Komponisten und Kunstwerks noch nicht. Eine große Menge von Melodien zirkulierte, sie wurden oft in arrangierter Form veröffentlicht. Playford ist daher eher Sammler oder Arrangeur als Komponist.

und 1730er Jahren um die letzten Neuauflagen seiner Sammlung. Im Verlauf der Editionen kommen modebedingt manche Lieder hinzu, andere verschwinden. Die Neuauflagen des Dancing Master haben wahrscheinlich zur Verbreitung der Melodien und Tänze auf dem europäischen Kontinent beigetragen – in Frankreich unter dem Namen Contredanse, einer Verballhornung von country dance. pascale boquet. Das goldene Zeitalter von Versailles fällt mit den letzten Lebensjahren von Playford

zusammen. Die ersten Stücke, die er herausgab, haben noch viel vom ländlichen Reigen oder den Gavottes, die Praetorius 1612 publiziert hat. claire michon. Die unterschiedlichen Ausgaben der Sammlung von Playford konnten einen Über-

gang vom Ende der Renaissance zu den höfischen Balltänzen darstellen. Einige Playford-Tänze finden sich sogar in den Contredanse-Sammlungen von Pariser Tanzmeistern des beginnenden 18.

Freddy eichelberger. Diese Frage stellt sich heute, im 21. Jahrhundert, etwas komplizierter. Wir

alle spielen unterschiedliche Repertoires – klassische, volkstümliche, aktuelle Musik –, und wir alle kennen die Lieder, die im Radio zu hören sind. Die Gattungen mischen sich auch heute. Unsere musikalische Bildung besteht aus dem, was wir rund um uns herum hören, aus Liedern, nach denen wir getanzt haben… odile édouard. Man muss sich eine Besonderheit des englischen Hofs im 17. Jahrhundert vor

Augen halten: Man war dort auf all diese Tanzweisen und Volkslieder erpicht. Das hat die Veröffent25 25

claire michon. Er gehört zu einer Dynastie von Verlegern – sein Sohn kümmert sich in den 1720er

lichung so vieler Sammlungen von Tanzliedern gefördert. In Frankreich war das nicht so, der Hof schloss sich fast ganz ab. pascale boquet. Um auf diese Interpretation der Gattungen zurückzukommen: die Volksballaden

fanden sich in äußerst komplexen Stücken für Laute oder Cembalo wieder, in fünfstimmigen Kontrapunkten… Die Fusion der Gattungen ist offensichtlich. claire michon. Die Musik zirkulierte auch deswegen so sehr, weil es zwischen profaner und re-

ligiöser Musik keine Grenzen gab. Diese Melodien wurden auch im sakralen Repertoire genutzt: La Monica zum Beispiel, ein Tanz und ein Lied zugleich, das unter verschiedenen Titeln überall in Europa anzutreffen ist und von Girolamo Frescobaldi in La Missa sopra la Monica eingesetzt wird. playFords sammlung enthält tanzWeisen. Wie haben sie es geschaFFt, die polyphonie dieser musik neu zu kreieren, Wo sie doch nur Von melodien ausgehen konnten ? odile édouard. Wesentlich ist, dass es keine vollständige Partitur gibt. In seiner Sammlung hat Play-

ford die Melodie und die entsprechenden Tanzschritte aufgezeichnet. Es ist keinerlei Bassbegleitung vorhanden – Freddy und Pascal haben sie völlig neu erfunden –, und die Instrumentierungen sind nicht notiert. Zahlreiche Gruppen haben sich diese Musik auf ganz andere Weise angeeignet als wir, sie haben vor allem auch Schlagzeug eingesetzt. Alles ist möglich. claire michon. Playfords Ziel war es nicht, Musik zu publizieren, sondern Tänze zu erklären. Er hat

die Melodien nur als Gedächtnisstütze notiert. odile édouard. Man könnte das mit den Dorffiedlern heute in der Auvergne vergleichen. Sie haben

die Melodie im Gedächtnis und improvisieren Variationen.

sylVie moquet. Wir haben uns auch auf die musikalische Technik der damaligen Zeit gestützt, die in

vielen englischen Abhandlungen beschrieben wird, wo die verschiedenen Arten dargestellt sind, mit einer Melodie oder mit einem Bass zu improvisieren. mit Freddy auf ganz natürliche Art zusammen. Meistens haben wir, wenn wir eine Melodie hörten, alle fast auf dieselbe Art harmonisiert. Das ging mit unglaublicher Selbstverständlichkeit und geistiger Homogenität vor sich.

Wurden diese tanzmelodien ursprünglich gesungen? gab es texte? pascale boquet. Wir haben tatsächlich viele ballad-tunes wiedergefunden, die gesungen wurden.

Sie hatten Texte, manchmal eine beeindruckende Anzahl von Strophen. Mancher dieser Texte ging verloren, aber schon wenn man den Titel liest, kann man sich vorstellen, dass es sich um eine wirkliche Geschichte gehandelt hat. claire michon. Auf ein und dieselbe Melodie können unterschiedliche Worte gesungen werden, ein

und derselbe Text kann mit verschiedenen Titeln verbunden sein. Manche Melodien ändern von Land zu Land ihren Text. Wir haben die Texte auf doppelte Weise berücksichtigt: in manchen Fällen kannten wir den Text und haben seinen Charakter einbezogen; in anderen Fällen wählten wir die Melodie, bevor wir den Text fanden. Stingo zum Beispiel wurde eine melancholische Ballade, weil wir sie in diesem Tempo aufgefasst haben, bevor wir entdeckten, dass es sich um ein Trinklied handelte. Für mich ist das kein Widerspruch.

Freddy eichelberger. Hört man sämtliche Varianten eines Thema wie Rights of Man, dann stellt

man fest, dass die verschiedenen irischen Gruppen es mit unterschiedlichem Tempo und Charakter spielen.

pascale boquet. Als sich die Frage gestellt hat, wie wir das harmonisch gestalten sollten, kamen wir

pascale boquet. Arnaud des Pallières hat in seinem Film Michael Kohlhaas für die dramatischste

Szene Drive The Cold Winter Away und The Beggar Boy benutzt. Das ist ein wunderbares Beispiel dafür, was für einen unterschiedlichen Charakter diese Balladen annehmen können. odile édouard. Diese Frage läuft auf das „Markenzeichen Witches“ hinaus: Wir haben immer einen

extrem stimmlichen Ausdruck gepflegt, ohne uns doch von der Rhythmik und vom Tanz zu entfernen. nach nobody’s Jig haben sie sich andere traditionen aus anderen ländern erschlossen und auFgenommen. Was treibt sie als musiker eigentlich dazu, immer neue Wege einzuschlagen? claire michon. Wir hatten es nie eilig damit, Platten aufzunehmen. Was uns aber alle gemeinsam

drängt, ist die Lust, Dinge zu verwirklichen, die uns am Herzen liegen. Wir fünf haben jeder für sich wie alle gemeinsam Lust am Reisen, am Erkunden, an Dingen, die sich nicht von selbst verstehen.

Es geht uns um die Musik, ob sie nun mündlich und durch Tradition überliefert ist oder schriftlich erhalten und „klassisch“. Das Image der Gruppe und seine Wirklichkeit sind eins. odile édouard. Bei den meisten Gruppen für alte Musik gewinnt das traditionelle Repertoire immer

mehr an Boden. Was uns anzieht, ist das, was an diese volkstümlichen Praktiken immer noch aktuell und lebendig ist. pascale boquet. Und auch wenn wir ein weniger „traditionelles“, eher klassisches Programm auf-

nehmen, färbt unsere Vertrautheit mit lebendiger Volksmusik solche Aufnahmen auf weniger klassische Weise. odile édouard. Die Lust am Spielen solcher Volksweisen beruht natürlich auch auf dem Kontakt

mit dem Publikum: das ist ein Musik, die einen unmittelbar berührt. Es tut sehr gut und berauscht geradezu, die Freude des Publikums mitzufühlen.

Freddy eichelberger. Für mich wäre die einzige Rechtfertigung dafür eine Live-Aufnahme.

Platte ist wie eine Photographie; ich höre diese Platte mit demselben Vergnügen, als wenn ich mir Photos von vor fünfzehn Jahren ansehen würde, ohne Vergleich mit heute, ohne Werturteil. Wenn wir Nobody’s Jig noch einmal machen würden, dann wäre die Herausforderung wirklich die, es live einzuspielen. sylVie moquet. Das könnte eine Gelegenheit sein, die „Guest Witches“ um uns zu sammeln, denen

wir im Lauf der Jahre bei anderen Projekten begegnet sind, damit sie ihren Senf beisteuern! odile édouard. Eins ist sicher, wir würden wieder ebensoviel Spaß daran haben.
