Vous aVez enregistré ce programme autour de monteVerdi en 2009. Votre discographie chez alpha, dont Vous êtes l’un des fidèles artistes, était auparaVant plutôt tournée Vers des compositeurs de l’ombre et des pièces marginales des xViie et xViiie siècles. comment le très célèbre monteVerdi s’est-il imposé à Vous à ce moment de Votre parcours ?

Vincent Dumestre. Il s’agissait avant tout de dévoiler la vie musicale autour de Monteverdi, dont on ne connaissait quasiment rien à l’époque. René Jacobs avait enregistré Mazzocchi, Gesualdo avait la faveur des musiciens anglais, mais le terrain restait largement inexploré. Le contraste entre Monteverdi et son contemporain Marazzoli faisait apparaître la richesse de cette période et l’expérience invitait, par ricochet, à redécouvrir le maître crémonais.

Pendant plus de dix ans, nous avions redonné vie à des compositeurs méconnus ou oubliés – par goût pour ces œuvres que le temps avait injustement reléguées dans l’ombre mais dont la connaissance et la compréhension se révèlent aujourd’hui indispensables à notre vie musicale. L’envie de sonder les trésors enfouis nous guidait. Au bout de douze ans de ce cheminement et à la faveur d’une rencontre décisive, Monteverdi s’est imposé : nous venions de découvrir le lieu dans lequel avait été créé Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda.

Alors qu’il existe à Venise une dizaine de palazzi Mocenigo, nous avions retrouvé celui pour l’inauguration duquel son propriétaire, Nicolò Mocenigo, avait passé commande à Monteverdi en 1624 : il s’agit d’un petit salon étroit aux poutrelles peintes, au premier étage de ce palais situé entre le rio di San Stae et la salizada du même nom. L’œuvre y fut créée sur une scène qui ne pouvait s’étendre au-delà de quelques mètres et limitait forcément l’évolution scénique des chanteurs. Ces contraintes d’espace expliquent le caractère chambriste du Combattimento et permettent d’imaginer quels types de voix pouvaient incarner le Testo, Clorinda et Tancredi.

C’est donc la découverte du palais Mocenigo qui non seulement nous a inspiré cet enregistrement mais qui m’a guidé dans le choix de l’instrumentation, des voix et de l’effectif à employer. Une fois visitée cette pièce de huit mètres de large, tout devient évident : il n’est pas tant question d’intimisme que de réalisme face aux contraintes inhérentes à l’espace. Ces aspects concrets sont d’ailleurs bien souvent le meilleur moyen de comprendre la réalité d’une œuvre. d’où est partie l’idée d’associer des madrigaux guerriers et amoureux à La fiera di farfa du méconnu marazzoli ?

V. d. Cette association est due à la seconde rencontre qui fut essentielle dans l’élaboration de ce projet : la découverte du manuscrit de Marazzoli. Par sa dimension parodique, La fiera di Farfa tend ouvertement un miroir au Combattimento de Monteverdi : à la fin de l’intermède, une rixe éclate, indiquée par la mention « Qui va il combattimento ». La lutte se solde par une explication entre Zanni et Coviello, dont les termes, bien qu’en dialecte, plagient directement le texte du Tasse mis en musique par Monteverdi : « Amico, hai vinto: io ti perdon, perdona / In fato nelle costiù / L’è pur la bella cosa esser poltrù » – « Ami, tu as vaincu : je te pardonne, pardon. / En effet, en semblable circonstance, / C’est une bien belle chose que d’être un poltron. » L’auteur singe la grande tradition poétique qui est celle du huitième livre de madrigaux de Monteverdi, où la guerre n’est que l’ombre portée de l’amour. Comment ne pas associer alors l’original et son pastiche ? Le choix des œuvres met en avant cette esthétique parodiée par Marazzoli, dont Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda constitue un sommet.

d’où Vient cet intermezzo de marazzoli ? comment en aVez-Vous découVert la partition ?

V. d. J’avais été intrigué par un article de M. A. Purciello, qui évoquait le désordre et l’effervescence d’un intermède d’un certain Marco Marazzoli. Après plusieurs péripéties, je pus accéder au manuscrit, qui dormait depuis plusieurs siècles à la Bibliothèque vaticane. L’œuvre était à nulle autre égale, composée comme un long dialogue faisant intervenir tout un tas de personnages très variés – notamment les populaires Zanni et Coviello de la commedia dell’arte –, présentant une écriture musicale et des dialectes associés à chacun. L’espace de recréation et d’improvisation offert aux voix comme aux instruments était immense ! L’œuvre, haute en couleurs et profondément théâtrale, pour laquelle on sait que le Bernin avait fait entrer de vrais animaux sur scène et engagé d’authentiques forains, me laissait des doutes quant à son enregistrement au disque mais la parodie finale était trop belle pour rester ignorée. des poèmes raffinés et passionnés de pétrarque, rinuccini et du tasse, et une farce gouailleuse aux couleurs de commedia deLL’arte : n’était-ce pas un rapprochement très audacieux ?

V. d. Pas tant que cela ! Le mélange des genres et des registres est consubstantiel à l’époque baroque.

Monteverdi écrit lui-même des passages de ses opéras en style madrigalesque et convoque des personnages bouffons au milieu de crimes d’État. Songez aux scènes d’Arnalta de L’incoronazione di Poppea ou d’Iro d’Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria : la farce n’est pas loin.

bien que le ton soit différent – tragique et intime dans les madrigaux, comique et collectif dans l’intermède –, ces œuVres semblent tendre Vers un même but : raconter une histoire, la rendre Visuelle, théâtrale. monteVerdi est connu pour aVoir présidé aux débuts de l’opéra. qu’en est-il de marazzoli et de son rapport à la scène ?

V. d. La capacité de Marazzoli à caractériser musicalement des personnages très définis en jouant sur la limite entre parlé et chanté est remarquable. Dans L’Egisto ovvero Chi soffre speri – l’œuvre à grand spectacle de plus de cinq heures, représentée au palais Barberini en 1637, dont La fiera di Farfa est le second intermezzo –, il fait preuve d’un sens aigu du comique alors qu’il s’agit de la première comédie en musique jamais écrite.

Parallèlement, Marazzoli aborde avec la même réussite des sujets sérieux tels que La vita humana, drame allégorique du même auteur que L’Egisto (le cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi, futur pape Clément Ix). Il ne faut pas oublier qu’il fut, sa vie durant, au service des Barberini, dont le goût pour la scène et les moyens de production lui permettaient de laisser libre cours à son talent d’homme de théâtre. Avec le Bernin comme metteur en scène et une foule de figurants à disposition, La fiera di Farfa ne pouvait manquer de brio musical ! monteVerdi et marazzoli reflètent un xViie siècle bigarré et foisonnant, où musique saVante et musique populaire se côtoient et s’influencent. est-ce important pour Vous de traVailler aujourd’hui le répertoire baroque sous l’éclairage du répertoire populaire et de ses codes ?

V. d. On ne peut comprendre le savant sans démêler les éléments populaires dont il se nourrit. C’est pour moi une chose essentielle, qui effectivement transparaît dans bon nombre de mes enregistrements avec Le Poème harmonique. Il me semble indispensable d’approcher les musiques baroques 12 12

sans restreindre les contours de notre regard. C’est pourquoi nous essayons, pour chaque projet, de comprendre toute une époque et les coutumes qui lui sont associées. Il faut pour cela être curieux de toutes les musiques et élargir la réflexion au répertoire oral. Ces sources éclairent différemment les répertoires dits savants.

Toutefois dans le cadre de ce programme précis, à l’exception de la tarentelle dans Il combattimento, ces œuvres de Monteverdi n’ont rien de populaire musicalement ; seul le caractère scénique reflète cette dimension. pour Vous qui êtes luthiste et théorbiste, on imagine que les couleurs et la dynamique apportées par le continuo ont une importance particulière. qu’est-ce qui Vous a guidé dans le choix des instruments ?

V. d. Là encore, les conditions de la création du Combattimento que j’ai citées plus haut sont parlantes : dans cet espace à peine suffisant pour permettre des déplacements aux chanteurs, il était difficile d’imaginer un grand ensemble. J’ai donc choisi un petit effectif, composé essentiellement de cordes frottées et pincées. En ce qui concerne le continuo, je le détermine plutôt selon les pratiques de l’époque et les exigences de la partition que d’après mon propre goût.

La fiera di farfa est une scène de marché ouVerte aux camelots, badauds et animaux de toute sorte, que marazzoli peint aVec un grand réalisme. comment procède-t-il ?

V. d. Marazzoli a incontestablement le don du récitatif. L’intonation, jamais stéréotypée, et le registre vocal lui servent à peindre les différents caractères. Certains procédés harmoniques peuvent également le seconder, comme le bourdon qui décrit la rusticité du vendeur de pois chiches (« Ceci, ceci spassatempo »). C’est cette rhétorique adaptée à chaque personnage et aussi l’usage des 13 13

différents dialectes propres à chacun qui créent la vitalité et, par accumulation, l’impression de joyeux désordre propre à la pièce.

Les personnages de Coviello et Zanni – les masques napolitain et bergamasque de la commedia dell’arte – ont une réelle identité linguistique par l’usage de leur dialecte. Cette dimension plurilinguistique, qu’a mise en valeur Jean-François Lattarico, qui avait travaillé avec nous sur la première édition de ce programme, est vraiment exceptionnelle, non seulement source de comédie, de rythme et d’entrain mais aussi réelle incarnation des personnages. Toute la scène de marché est là, recréée sous nos yeux et pour nos oreilles, avec un hyperréalisme frappant : dans son agitation, dans sa polyvocalité et dans son plurilinguisme. et au final, nous aVons cette scène de plagiat du combat de tancrède et clorinde pour éVoquer une bagarre sur le marché. ce pastiche réVèle à quel point monteVerdi était connu de ses contemporains ?

V. d. En cette époque où l’édition était rare, le pastiche était fréquent. Ici comme ailleurs, il s’agit moins d’un pied de nez, d’un hommage ou d’un aveu de stérilité que d’un clin d’œil directement adressé au public. Dans un autre contexte, Cavalli reprend une chanson à la mode au milieu d’une scène de son célèbre Giasone. Le public du palais Barberini était lettré et reconnaissait sans aucun doute un détournement de La Jérusalem délivrée.

En ce qui concerne Il combattimento lui-même, Marazzoli pastiche le fameux « Amico, hai vinto » du Tasse. Il indique précisément l’endroit où doit s’insérer une musique de bataille (« Qui va il combattimento »), ce que nous avons traduit par ce pastiche en dialecte bergamasque et altéré du texte du Tasse.

Vous enregistrez beaucoup le répertoire français et italien, aVec une curiosité insatiable et une âme de découVreur qui bousculent les frontières. gagnerez-Vous un jour l’allemagne, bach et ses contemporains ?

V. d. Nous donnons déjà des programmes allemands, notamment autour de la guerre de Trente Ans et nous préparons actuellement des œuvres de Bach, mais il est vrai que la majorité de nos programmes mettent en avant les répertoires français et italiens. si Vous aViez aujourd’hui la possibilité de réenregistrer ce programme, y changeriez-Vous quelque chose ?

V. d. Le disque est un instantané photographique, qu’il soit le résultat d’un important travail de montage ou d’une captation sur le vif. En réenregistrant, on dit obligatoirement autre chose – ou plutôt l’on redit différemment. Fondamentalement, j’aime cet album, et si j’avais à en corriger certains aspects, ce serait minime et sans réelle importance.

‘ThE uRgE TO uNEARTh buRIED TREAsuREs’ VINCENT DuMEsTrE

Vincent Dumestre. The idea was above all to reveal something of musical life around Monteverdi, which was virtually unknown at the time. René Jacobs had recorded some Mazzocchi, Gesualdo enjoyed the favours of English musicians, but the terrain was still largely unexplored. The contrast between Monteverdi and his contemporary Marazzoli afforded an insight into the riches of this period, and the experience invited us, by extension, to rediscover the Cremonese master.

For more than ten years, we had brought little-known or forgotten composers back to life – because we enjoyed performing these works that time had unfairly consigned to obscurity but a knowledge and understanding of which can today be seen as indispensable to our musical life. We were stimulated by the urge to unearth buried treasures. After twelve years exploring these paths, Monteverdi became the obvious choice following a decisive event: we had just discovered the place where Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda had received its first performance.

Although there are around a dozen ‘palazzi Mocenigo’ in Venice, we had found the one for the inauguration of which its owner, Nicolò Mocenigo, had commissioned a work from Monteverdi in 1624. The venue in question is a narrow little drawing room with painted beams on the first floor of this palazzo situated between the Rio di San Stae and the Salizada di San Stae. The work was premiered there on a stage that couldn’t have extended beyond a few metres and must inevitably have restricted the singers’ movements. These limitations of space explain the chamber character of the Combattimento and allow us to imagine the types of voice that could have sung the narrator (Testo), Clorinda and Tancredi.

you recorded this programme built around monteVerdi in 2009. your discography on alpha, of which you haVe been one of the most loyal artists, had preViously tended towards little-known composers and fairly marginal pieces of the sixteenth and seVenteenth centuries. how did you come to choose the ultra-famous monteVerdi at this point in your career?

So it was the discovery of the Palazzo Mocenigo that not only inspired this recording but also guided me in the choice of instrumentation, voices, and the forces to use. Once you’ve visited this room, just eight metres wide, everything becomes evident: it isn’t so much a question of intimacy as of realism in the face of the constraints inherent in the space. In fact, these concrete aspects are very often the best way to reach an understanding of the reality of a work. where did you get the idea of coupling monteVerdi’s madrigals of loVe and war with La fiera di farfa (the fair at farfa) by the little-known marazzoli?

V. D. The association came about thanks to the second event that played an essential role in the elaboration of this project: the discovery of Marazzoli’s manuscript. In its parodic dimension, La fiera di Farfa openly holds up a mirror to Monteverdi’s Combattimento: at the end of the intermedio, a brawl breaks out, indicated by the words ‘qui va il combattimento’ (the combat takes place here). The fight ends with a dialogue between Zanni and Coviello, using terms which, though in dialect, directly plagiarise Tasso’s text as set to music by Monteverdi: Amico, hai vinto: io ti perdon, perdona / In fato nelle costiù / L’è pur la bella cosa esser poltrù (Friend, you have won: I forgive you; forgive me too. / For, in such circumstances, / It is a fine thing to be a coward). The author is mimicking the great poetic tradition to which Monteverdi’s eighth book of madrigals belongs, where war is merely the shadow of love. How could we resist associating the original and its pastiche? The choice of works exemplifies this aesthetic parodied by Marazzoli, of which Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda constitutes one of the peaks.

V. D. I had been intrigued by an article by Maria Anne Purciello, which discussed the bustle and effervescence of an intermedio by a certain Marco Marazzoli. After an eventful search, I managed to gain access to the manuscript, which had been slumbering in the Vatican Library for several centuries. The work turned out to be quite unlike any other, composed as a long dialogue with interventions from a host of extremely varied characters (notably the popular figures of Zanni and Coviello from commedia dell’arte), each of whom is associated with a different musical style and dialect. The scope for recreation and improvisation offered to both voices and instruments was immense! I did have some doubts about whether such a colourful and profoundly theatrical work, for which we know that Bernini put real animals on stage and engaged genuine fairground performers, would work as an audio recording, but the final parody was too tempting to leave languishing in obscurity. refined and passionate poems by petrarch, rinuccini and tasso, and a cheeky farce in the colours of commedia dell’arte: wasn’t that a Very bold juxtaposition?

V. D. Not so much as all that! The mixture of genres and registers is consubstantial with the Baroque era. Monteverdi himself writes passages of his operas in madrigalian style and brings on comic characters in the midst of political crimes. Think of the scenes with Arnalta in L’incoronazione di Poppea or Iro in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria: farce is never far away.

where does this intermedio by marazzoli come from? how did you come across the score?

although the tone is different – tragic and intimate in the madrigals, comical and collectiVe in the intermedio – these works seem to pursue the same goal: to tell a story, to make it Visual, theatrical. monteVerdi is known for haVing presided oVer the beginnings of opera. what can you tell us about marazzoli and his relationship to the stage?

V. D. Marazzoli has a remarkable ability to characterise very clearly defined protagonists musically by playing on the borderline between speech and singing. In L’Egisto ovvero Chi soffre speri – a highly spectacular work lasting more than five hours, performed at the Palazzo Barberini in 1637, of which La fiera di Farfa forms the second intermedio – he displays a keen sense of the comic in what is actually the first musical comedy ever written.

At the same time, Marazzoli was equally successful with serious subjects like La vita humana, an allegorical drama by the same author as L’Egisto (Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi, later to become Pope Clement Ix). It mustn’t be forgotten that throughout his life he was in the service of the Barberini family, whose taste for the stage and lavish production resources allowed him to give free rein to his talent as a man of the theatre. With Bernini as stage director and a host of supernumeraries at his disposal, La fiera di Farfa could not have lacked for musical brio!

V. D. You can’t understand art music without identifying the popular elements it fed on. That’s an essential point for me, and one that certainly emerges in many of my recordings with Le Poème Harmonique. It seems indispensable to me to approach Baroque music without limiting our field of vision. That’s why, for each project, we try to understand a whole period and the customs associated with it. That in its turn implies being curious about all kinds of music and extending our reflection to the oral repertory. These sources shed a new and different light on the so-called ‘learned’ repertories.

All the same, within the framework of this particular programme, aside from the tarantella in Il combattimento, these works by Monteverdi contain no elements from popular music; only the character of Il combattimento as a stage work reflects that dimension. one imagines that for you, as a lutenist and theorbist, the colours and the dynamism contributed by the continuo are of special importance. what guided you in the choice of instruments?

V. D. There too, the conditions of the first performance of Il combattimento that I mentioned earlier are significant: in that space barely large enough to allow the singers to move, it’s hard to conceive of a big ensemble. I therefore chose small forces, essentially comprising bowed and plucked strings. As far as the continuo is concerned, I determined its composition according to the practice of the period and the requirements of the score rather than my own tastes.

monteVerdi and marazzoli reflect a teeming, heterogeneous seVenteenth century, in which art and popular music rubbed shoulders with and influenced each other. is it important for you to work on the baroque repertory today in the light of the popular repertory and its codes?

La fiera di farfa is a market scene, featuring pedlars, passers-by and animals of all kinds, which marazzoli depicts with great realism. how does he go about that?

V. D. Marazzoli unquestionably possesses a gift for recitative. He makes use of intonation, never stereotyped, and vocal register to portray the different characters. Certain harmonic devices can also support this, like the drone that evokes the rusticity of the seller of chickpeas (‘Ceci, ceci spassatempo’). It’s this rhetoric adapted to each character, along with the use of the different dialects appropriate to each of them, that creates the vitality and, by accumulation, the impression of cheerful chaos that characterises the piece.

The figures of Coviello and Zanni – the maskers of the commedia dell’arte, from Naples and Bergamo respectively – gain a genuine linguistic identity from the use of their dialect. This plurilinguistic dimension, which was emphasised by Jean-François Lattarico, who worked with us on the original release of this programme, is quite exceptional, not only as a source of comedy, rhythm and energy, but also as a veritable embodiment of the characters. The whole market scene is there, recreated for our eyes and ears, with striking hyperrealism in its agitation, its polyvocality and its plurilingualism. and finally we haVe that scene plagiarising the combat of tancred and clorinda in order to eVoke a brawl on the marketplace. does this pastiche demonstrate how well known monteVerdi was to his contemporaries?

V. D. In this period when printed editions were rare, pastiche was frequent. Here and elsewhere, we’re talking less of mockery, homage or an admission of creative sterility than of a conniving reference directly addressed to the public. In another context, Cavalli reuses a fashionable song in the middle of a scene in his famous Giasone. The public of the Palazzo Barberini was well read and would undoubtedly have recognised a sarcastic twist on La Gerusalemme liberata.

As to Il combattimento itself, Marazzoli pastiches Tasso’s famous ‘Amico, hai vinto’. He indicates the precise place where battle music must be inserted (‘qui va il combattimento’), which we conveyed by this altered pastiche of Tasso’s text in Bergamask dialect. you record a great deal of french and italian repertory, with an insatiable curiosity and an exploratory zeal that knocks down frontiers. will you go on one day to germany, to bach and his contemporaries?

V. D. We already give German programmes, notably focusing on the Thirty Years War, and we’re currently preparing works by Bach, but it’s true that most of our programmes concentrate on the French and Italian repertories. if you had the opportunity to rerecord this programme today, would you change anything?

V. D. The disc is a snapshot of a specific point in time, whether it’s the result of extensive studio editing or of a live recording. If you rerecord the music, you’re bound to say something else – or rather to repeat it in a different way. I basically still like this album, and if I had to correct certain aspects of it, they would be minor ones without any real importance.

„DIE LusT, VERbORgENE schäTZE AusZugRAbEN“ VINCENT DuMEsTrE

Vincent Dumestre. Es ging mir vor allem um das musikalische Leben rund um Monteverdi, von dem man damals fast gar nicht wusste. René Jacobs hatte Monteverdi aufgenommen, um Gesualdo kümmerten sich englische Musiker, aber weitgehend war das Terrain noch unerforscht. Der Kontrast zwischen Monteverdi und seinem Zeitgenossen Marazzoli zeigt den ganzen Reichtum dieser Periode, und diese Erfahrung lud dazu ein, nun wiederum den Meister aus Cremona neu zu entdecken. Über zehn Jahre lang hatten wir verkannten oder vergessenen Komponisten zu neuem Leben verholfen – uns gefielen ihre Werke, die unverdient in Vergessenheit geraten waren und deren Kenntnis und Verständnis inzwischen bereits als unerlässlich für unser Musikleben gelten. Die Lust, verborgene Schätze auszugraben, stand am Anfang. Zwölf Jahre später und dank einem entscheidenden Fund wurde Monteverdi für uns unumgänglich: wir hatten den Ort entdeckt, an dem Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda uraufgeführt worden war.

In Venedig gibt es ein Dutzend Paläste mit dem Namen Mocenigo, aber wir haben den wiedergefunden, für dessen Einweihung Nicolò Mocenigo, sein Eigentümer, Monteverdi 1624 einen Auftrag erteilte: Es handelt sich um einen kleinen, engen Empfangsraum mit bemalten Deckenbalken in der ersten Etage dieses Palazzo, der zwischen dem rio di San Stae und der salizada gleichen Namens errichtet worden war. Das Werk wurde hier auf eine Bühne gebracht, die sich nur über ein paar Meter erstrecken konnte und die Bewegungsfreiheit der Sänger zwangsläufig einschränkte. Diese räumlichen Zwänge erklären den Kammercharakter des Combattimento und vermitteln eine Vorstellung davon, welche Stimmtypen Testo, Clorinda und Tancredi verkörperten.

sie haben dieses programm rund um monteVerdi 2009 aufgenommen. ei ihren früheren aufnahmen für alpha war es ihnen um bisher unbekannte komponisten und marginale stücke aus dem 17. und 18. jahrhundert gegangen. wie kam es, dass der hochberühmte monteVerdi plötzlich in ihrer entwicklung auftauchte?

Diese Entdeckung des Palazzo Mocenigo hat uns nicht nur zu dieser Aufnahme angeregt, sie hat mich auch bei meinen Entscheidungen zur Instrumentierung, bei der Auswahl der Stimmen und dem Umfang des Ensembles geleitet. Hat man einmal diesen acht Meter breiten Raum gesehen, liegt es auf der Hand: Es geht nicht um Intimität, sondern um eine realistische Einstellung gegenüber den Zwängen, die der Raum schafft. Solche konkreten Aspekte sind häufig der beste Ratgeber beim Verständnis der Wirklichkeit eines Werks. wie kamen sie darauf, La fiera di farfa des Verkannten mazzaroli mit kriegsund liebesmadrigalen zu Verbinden?

V. D. Diese Verbindung ist auf einen zweiten glücklichen Fund zurückzuführen, der bei der Ausarbeitung dieses Projekts wesentlich wurde: auf die Entdeckung des Manuskripts von Marazzoli.

Durch seine parodistische Dimension hält La fiera di Farfa dem Combattimento Monteverdis deutlich den Spiegel vor: Am Ende des Zwischenspiels bricht eine Keilerei aus, das zeigt die Anmerkung: „Qui va il combattimento“. Der Kampf endet mit einer Aussprache zwischen Zanni und Coviello, die den von Monteverdi vertonten Tasso-Text direkt plagiiert: „Amico, hai vinto: io ti perdon, perdona / In fato nelle costiù / L’è pur la bella cosa esser poltrù“ („Freund, du hast gesiegt: ich vergebe dir, vergib! / In Fällen wie diesem / wird man am besten zur Memme“). Der Autor verhöhnt die große poetische Tradition, die des achten Buchs der Madrigale von Monteverdi, wo der Krieg einzig der Schatten der Liebe ist. Die von Marazzoli parodierte Ästhetik – Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda ist einer ihre Höhepunkte – steht bei unserer Auswahl im Vordergrund. Wie könnte man der Versuchung widerstehen, das Ideal mit diesem Pasticcio zu verbinden?

V. D. Ein Artikel von M. A. Purciello, der das hektische Durcheinander in einem Zwischenspiel eines gewissen Marco Marazzoli erwähnte, hatte meine Neugier geweckt. Nach mehreren Anläufen gelang es mir, das Manuskript in der Vatikanischen Bibliothek aufzutreiben, wo es seit mehreren hundert Jahren schlief. Das Werk glich keinem anderen, das ich je gesehen habe. Es besteht aus einem langen Dialog, in den eine ganze Menge sehr unterschiedlicher Personen eingreifen, darunter vor allem die volkstümlichen commedia dell’arte-Figuren Zanni und Coviello; die musikalische Textur und die Dialekte sind jeder einzelnen von ihnen angepasst. Den Stimmen wie den Instrumenten steht ein immenser Raum zur Verfügung! Das deftige, höchst theatralische Spiel, von dem man weiß, dass Bernini es mit echten Tieren und authentischen Schaustellern aufgeführt hat, ließ mich an der Möglichkeit einer Plattenaufnahme zweifeln, aber die Schlussparodie war zu schön, um unbekannt zu bleiben. subtile und leidenschaftliche gedichte Von petrarca, rinuccini und tasso, und daneben eine spöttische farce im stil der commedia deLL’arte – war das nicht eine sehr kühne mischung?

V. D. Nicht so sehr! Die Mischung der Gattungen und Register ist für die Barockzeit typisch. Monteverdi selbst komponiert Teile seiner Opern im Madrigalstil, komische Figuren kommen bei ihm mitten in Haupt- und Staatsaktionen vor. Denken Sie an die Szenen der Arnalta in L’incoronazione die Poppea oder die des Iro in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria: es ist nicht weit bis zur Farce.

woher stammt dieses zwischenspiel Von marazzoli? wie haben sie die partitur entdeckt?

obwohl der ton Verschieden ist – tragisch und priVat in den madrigalen, komisch und kollektiV im zwischenspiel – scheinen diese werke dasselbe ziel zu haben: eine geschichte erzählen, sie sichtbar machen. monteVerdi ist bekannt dafür, dass er am anfang der oper stand. wie steht es aber um marazzoli und seine beziehung zur bühne?

V. D. Marazzolis Fähigkeit, genau umrissene Gestalten durch ein Spiel an der Grenze zwischen Gespräch und Gesang musikalisch zu charakterisieren, ist sehr bemerkenswert. In Egisto ovvero Chi soffre speri (einem sehr spektakulären Werk von über fünf Stunden Spielzeit, das 1637 im Palazzo Barberini aufgeführt wurde – La fiera di Farfa ist das zweite Zwischenspiel) zeigt er einen ausgeprägten Sinn für Komik. Es handelt sich um die erste musikalische Komödie, die je geschreiben wurde.

Parallel dazu beschäftigt sich Marazzoli ebenso erfolgreich mit ernsten Stoffen, so in La vita humana, einem allegorischen Drama desselben Bühnenautors, der auch den Egisto verfasst hat; es handelt sich um den Kardinal Giulio Rospigliosi, den späteren Papst Clemens Ix. Man darf nicht vergessen, dass Marazzoli sein Leben lang im Dienst der Barberinis stand, deren Liebe zum Theater ihm die materiellen Mittel verschaffte, sein Talent als Bühnenmensch auszuleben. Mit Bernini als Regisseur und all den Statisten, die ihm zur Verfügung standen, konnte es der Fiera di Farfa nicht an musikalischem Brio fehlen.

V. D. Das Ernste lässt sich ohne Elemente des Volkstümlichen nicht verstehen, es lebt davon. Für mich ist das etwas Wesentliches, das sich in zahlreichen Aufnahmen mit Le Poème harmonique zeigt. Es scheint mir unerlässlich, bei der Beschäftigung mit der Barockmusik unseren Blick nicht einzuschränken. Deswegen versuchen wir bei jedem Projekt, eine ganze Epoche und die in sie eingebundenen Bräuche zu verstehen. Dazu muss man sie für alle Spielarten der Musik interessieren und auch das mündlich tradierte Repertoire einbeziehen. Diese Quellen werfen ein anderes Licht auf das sogenannt ernste Repertoire.

In dem Programm, von dem wir sprechen, haben die Werke Monteverdis – abgesehen von einer Tarantella in Il combattimento – allerdings nichts von volkstümlicher Musik; nur der Bühnencharakter spiegelt diese Dimension. sie selbst spielen laute und theorbe. man könnte sich Vorstellen, dass die klangfarbe und die dynamik des continuo für sie eine besondere bedeutung hat. was hat sie bei der wahl der instrumente beeinflusst?

V. D. Auch hier sprechen die Bedingungen, unter denen die Uraufführung des Combattimento stattfand, eine deutliche Sprache: in diesem Raum, der es kaum ermöglichte, dass die Tänzer sich bewegen, kann man sich kein großes Ensemble vorstellen. Ich habe daher eine kleine Besetzung gewählt, im Wesentlichen gestrichene und gezupfte Saiteninstrumente. Was das continuo angeht, so folge ich eher dem Usus der Epoche und den Anforderungen der Partitur als meinem persönlichen Geschmack.

monteVerdi und marazzoli spiegeln ein bunt wimmelndes 17. jahrhundert, in dem ernste musik sich mit Volksmusik mischt und beide einander beeinflussen. ist es wichtig für sie, das barockrepertoire heute im licht des Volkstümlichen repertoires und seiner codes zu bearbeiten?

La fiera di farfa ist eine Von marazzoli mit grossem realismus gestaltete marktszene mit strassenhändlern, gaffern und tieren aller art. wie geht er dabei genau Vor?

V. D. Marazzoli hat unbestreitbar eine große Begabung für das Rezitativ. Die niemals stereotyp eingesetzte Intonation und das Stimmregister dienen ihm zur Zeichnung unterschiedlicher Charaktere.

Er lässt sich ebenfalls durch harmonische Verfahren unterstützen, etwa durch den Einsatz des Bordun, der die Ungehobeltheit des Kichererbsenverkäufers beschreibt („Ceci, ceci, spassatempo“). Die jeder Figur auf den Leib geschriebene Rhetorik und der Einsatz unterschiedlicher Dialekte schaffen eine sich kumulierende Lebendigkeit, den Eindruck eines fröhlichen Durcheinanders.

Die Figuren des Coviello und des Zanni, die napolitanische und bergamaskische Maske der commedia dell’arte, erlangen durch ihre Dialekte sprachliche Wirklichkeit. Diese mehrsprachige Dimension, die Jean-François Lattarico, unser Mitarbeiter bei der ersten Aufführung dieses Programms, herausgearbeitet hat, ist ganz außerordentlich, nicht nur ein Quell der Komik, des Rhythmus und des Schwungs, sondern auch eine reelle Inkarnation der Gestalten. Die ganze Marktszene ist da, unter unseren Augen und für unsere Ohren neu geschaffen, hyperrealistisch in ihrem Trubel, ihrem Stimmenreichtum und ihrer Mehrsprachigkeit. und schliesslich haben wir diese parodie des kampfs zwischen tancredi und clorinda: eine keilerei auf dem marktplatz. zeigt dieses pasticcio, wie bekannt monteVerdi bei seinen zeitgenossen war?

V. D. In dieser Zeit waren Buchausgaben eine Rarität, Pasticcios waren häufig. Hier wie andernorts handelt es sich weniger um eine Verspottung, einen Ausdruck der Verehrung oder ein Aussetzen der Fantasie als vielmehr um ein Augenzwinkern, das sich direkt ans Publikum wendet. In einem anderen Kontext greift Cavalli mitten in seinem berühmten Giasone ein damals modisches Lied auf.

Das Publikum des Palazzo Barberini war gebildet und erkannte mit Sicherheit das zweckentfremdete Stück aus Tassos Gerusalemme liberata wieder.

Was Il combattimento selbst angeht, so persifliert Marazzoli Tassos berühmtes „Amico, hai vinto“. Er bezeichnet den Moment, wo die Schlachtmusik einzusetzen hat („Qui va il combattimento“), was wir durch dieses Pasticcio im bergamaskischen Dialekt und durch den entstellten Text Tassos umgesetzt haben. bei ihren aufnahmen des französischen und des italienischen repertoires zeigen sie eine unersättliche neugier. grenzen kennen sie dabei anscheinend nicht. werden sie eines tages auch bach und seinen zeitgenossen einbeziehen?

V. D. Wir geben schon jetzt deutsche Programme, vor allem rund um den Dreißigjährigen Krieg, und bereiten gegenwärtig Bach-Werke vor, aber es stimmt schon: in unseren Programmen stehen das italienische und das französische Repertoire im Vordergrund. wenn sie die möglichkeit hätten, das programm dieser cd noch einmal aufzunehmen, würden sie dann irgendetwas ändern?

V. D. Jede Platte ist eine Augenblicksaufnahme, ob sie nun das Ergebnis einer umfangreichen Montagearbeit ist oder eine Live-Einspielung. Wenn man etwas noch einmal aufnimmt, sagt man damit zwangsläufig etwas anderes – oder man sagt dasselbe anders. Im Grunde liebe ich dieses Album, und wenn ich einige Aspekte zu verbessern hätte, ginge es nur um winzige Korrekturen ohne große Bedeutung.
