Tous ces répertoires me fascinent.

alexis KossenKo. This recording was an essential point of my departure in my work as a flautist and conductor, because it was the first project on which I was able to control all the parameters. It seems to me very important to have an approach to this concertante repertory by C. P. E. Bach in which orchestra and soloist share a single musical conception. I was able to obtain that total unity by working as both soloist and conductor. To be honest, I took a greater interest in preparing the orchestra than in my flute part, and that naturally generated a different, more comprehensive view of the work, to which this programme owes its cohesion. In 2005, I was just beginning my collaboration with Arte dei Suonatori: the orchestra had invited me to play in a Bach Passion; we had also played some chamber music, and everyone had enjoyed the quality of the musical exchange. As a result, Arte dei Suonatori, which doesn’t have a permanent conductor, immediately offered me the chance to do our first concerto project. Now it so happened that for many years I had been completely in love with the music of C. P. E. Bach. So his concertos marked my first appearance in concert as guest soloist of the ensemble. And the project also allowed me to make my debut as a conductor. The recording on Alpha followed on very naturally from the concerts and my work with the orchestra. This disc was also the last project we did with the marvellous cellist Bas von Hengel. He died after this recording, which is still linked with him in our memories.

this recording of three concertos with flauto traverso obligato By carl PhiliPP emanuel Bach, released in 2005, was your first disc with arte dei suonatori on the alPha laBel. how do you view it today, ten years later?
what PromPted you, at the time, to record these three concertos in Particular?
a. K. Of the five C. P. E. Bach concertos I knew then, it was an obvious choice to record the ones in G major and D minor because we had concert experience of them, but also because they are the most emblematic, the best-known. They’ve haunted me for many years, even from the time before I started playing period flutes – since they are the only ones well known to ‘modern’ flautists. The Concerto in B flat major is much less familiar to us, and I remember acquiring a reputation as an inquisitive student in Alain Marion’s class at the Paris Conservatoire because of my propensity for deviating from the beaten track by bringing rare works like this one into lessons. It is perfectly complementary to the other two, much more tender and less ostentatious in its virtuosity. It should be noted that this concerto also features in the repertory of cellists and harpsichordists, because it exists in three versions. Having observed that the version for flute is rather less elaborate than the other two, I came to the conclusion that it was the first to be written, before C. P. E. Bach adapted and revised it for a cellist from his circle in Berlin, then for his own use on the harpsichord – in any case, the concertos he composed for a melody instrument also exist in a version for harpsichord. I feel very much in phase with the music of C. P. E. Bach, which for me has something very feline about it: it’s capable of purring gently and then suddenly clawing you. It’s never totally domesticated, and I love its wild, mysterious side.

a. K. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach placed himself wholly in the line of descent from his father, whom he greatly respected. To that extent, it’s not surprising that he inspired Haydn and Mozart, because at that time the music of Johann Sebastian was completely forgotten. Between his respect for his father’s teaching and his emancipation through contact with the style galant, the musical development of Carl Philipp Emanuel reveals a dazzling genius. Nevertheless, he sometimes had to compromise with the conventional tastes of his employer Frederick the Great, an enthusiastic flautist but one with reservations about the excessively ‘extravagant’ style of his harpsichordist. The situation soon created a certain professional frustration: when writing for the court, Bach felt himself obliged to maintain a conventional idiom; he could allow his imagination to range more freely when composing for private ‘academy’ concerts beyond the orbit of the court. So it should come as no surprise that the king preferred to keep the works of Quantz in his everyday repertory, even though we know that he was familiar with C. P. E. Bach’s concertos: he found the latter too difficult, not because he couldn’t play them – Frederick was an excellent flautist – but doubtless because was unable to grasp their full profundity and significance.

it’s true that c. P. e. Bach was a genuine innovator, modern in his style and admired By mozart, haydn and Beethoven. how do you thinK he BroKe free from the overwhelming heritage of his father, the great johann seBastian, whose PuPil he was from an early age and whom he frequented until he was thirty-six?
these concertos are Brilliant, extremely energetic, with incisive BreaKs in the discourse and heightened contrasts. would you agree that they are Precursors of the romantic comPosers rather than heirs to the concertos of vivaldi or telemann? the sturm und drang mood never seems far away.
a. K. It’s very clear that C. P. E. Bach’s style is much more experimental than that of Vivaldi or Telemann. That’s particularly obvious in the relation between orchestra and soloist: it’s a balance of two powerful forces, and not just a sort of ceremony that gives the soloist the starring role and makes the orchestra no more than a supporting act. I like to remind people that the word ‘concerto’ comes from the Italian concertare, which means ‘to fight’. Here one senses a genuine confrontation: the orchestra places the soloist in a difficult position, and can engulf him at any moment. That precarious situation of the solo line gives rise to a certain feeling of exhilaration: nothing is ever predictable in the way this music unfolds! C. P. E. Bach’s musical philosophy is a very modern one, which breaks free from and overturns the conventions of his period. It’s easy enough to find the sources of this language in his father or in other composers, but they are never constants, as they become with Carl Philipp Emanuel. I would accord a special place to the slow movements of his concertos, which depict such a rich gamut of sentiments: one can find there all the nuances of love, from its first stirrings to utter despair. Each of his middle movements is highly individual in terms of the nuance and the feeling evoked. They are often in stark contrast with the fast movements. Just as the central movement of the Concerto in D minor is wonderfully warm and luminous, its outer movements unleash incredible violence – the finale is a veritable storm in music, a rare event in the flute repertory, which tends more towards galanterie. There too, C. P. E. Bach allows the instrument to step outside the standard codes.
18 18
a. K. These forces are fairly representative of what one might have heard at the time, but in reality there was no norm for the performance of the concertos. The orchestra of the King of Prussia was very small, just one or two instrumentalists per part; but his opera orchestra was much bigger. It was the demands of the music itself that obliged us to ask ourselves what was the ideal size of orchestra. And that was how we came to use these forces, which seemed to us both light enough to be very flexible and substantial enough to convey a certain power. weren’t you temPted to change instrument according to the nature of the concertos you were Playing?
a. K. I did exactly that in the Vivaldi concertos we recorded after this disc, but in the case of the concertos of C. P. E. Bach, the Quantz flute is really the right instrument. Even if the characters of the concertos are very different, they all display a common force, going hand in hand with the quality of the music, which necessitates an instrument of that type. Since the wide-bore Quantz flutes answered their requirements, I didn’t feel the need to look for an alternative. These concertos demand a very virile, very ‘masculine’ instrument – Quantz mentions this several times in his flute treatise, countering the notion of the flute as a more ‘feminine’ instrument that appears in many compositions and in the popular imagination. The Quantz flute has a penetrating tone and a fairly fat, rich sound, and it’s entirely appropriate for playing these concertos, which must have an element of bravura to them. You really have to prepare for battle and be well armed!

did you decide to use a relatively small orchestra – eight violins, two violas, cello, douBle Bass, harPsichord – in order to get close to the forces c. P. e. Bach had at his disPosal at court or in the academies you mentioned earlier?
after this recording, you Became one of the favourite conductors and soloists of arte dei suonatori – which didn’t Prevent you from forming your own ensemBles too. in what resPect is arte dei suonatori different from other grouPs, and what did you get out of this relationshiP of mutual trust with the Polish ensemBle?
a. K. I have a very privileged relationship with Arte dei Suonatori; notably, the musicians allowed me to conceive a different orchestral sonority, more powerful than that of many existing ensembles. We also learnt things together: this recording is the outcome of shared experiments and mutual learning experiences. We discovered each other in the course of our numerous concerts. And since it was my first experience as a conductor, this collaboration confirmed the desire to conduct an orchestra that had been nagging at me since the age of . . . three and a half! My flute studies and my early career had made me set aside my dreams of conducting, but they took hold of me again and came to fruition in this unexpected project. I really did have the urge to mould the sound in my own way, to obtain something that I could hear in my inner ear – to make my voice heard through the orchestra and not only through the flute. In a sense, I was beginning to understand the words of Frans Brüggen, who said that one day he had found himself confronted with the limitations of his instrument’s repertory. When I first read that, I was taken aback; but then I understood what he meant. you Play Both the transverse flute (Baroque and modern) and the recorder. you have Built uP a career as a conductor, and have founded several ensemBles. is it necessary for you not to sPecialise in a single area of the rePertory and a single instrument?
a. K. Rather than not specialise, I refuse to renounce certain repertories. First of all I was a ‘modern’ flautist, then I came to the early repertory without giving up the modern flute. All these repertories 20 20
fascinate me. In the end, what I conduct must correspond to the types of music I frequent, have frequented, and continue to frequent. Nothing is excluded, which explains the creation of those different ensembles. if you had the oPPortunity to rerecord this Programme today, would you change anything?
a. K. I would probably adopt a lower pitch – as I did in my recent recording of the trio sonatas of C. P. E. Bach – because we know that the pitch standard was lower at the court of Frederick the Great. For this recording, in 2005, we kept the pitch of a′= 415 Hz that has become standard in Baroque music for practical reasons. Today, I would very likely use a large flute at a lower pitch; the result would be a slightly less brilliant colour but one that is much warmer and in a way more impressive in this music. Musically, I wouldn’t change very many points. I think we did a very good job from the word go. The experience of playing the works in concert, which we continued to do after this recording, has reinforced or called into question a few little things that would be apparent to the listener. I do sometimes think about rerecording these concertos, especially now that I direct my own orchestra, Les Ambassadeurs. They are already in our repertory; and although, broadly speaking, my convictions haven’t changed, different colours, different dynamics, new nuances in the affects have appeared spontaneously. So a new recording would reflect my personal trajectory, but then I would have to ask myself if the public really needs a new version of the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach concertos. alexis KossenKo.

24 24
