‘A FeelinG OF PrOFOunD inTimACy wiTH THe musiCAl mATeriAl’ CéLINE FRISCh
Céline FrisCh. Well, I suppose the obvious thing was to begin with Bach, who has been at the centre of my activity as musician right from the start. The Goldberg Variations are one of the peaks of the keyboard literature – for any instrument! – but also make an absolutely perfect programme for a concert or a disc. The fascination I feel for this work – and a touch of recklessness – made me want to record it. And I must add that the enthusiasm of Jean-Paul Combet, then director of the Alpha label, was a decisive factor. Your inCisive, luminous harpsiChord plaYing seems to be emanCipated From the straitjaCket oF the intenselY rigorous and mathematiCal Formal struCture baCh imposed on his variations. how did You approaCh this monument oF the keYboard repertorY? are there versions that inFluenCed and inspired You?
C. F. When I began to work on the Goldbergs, I played the work a great deal, very slowly, in order to steep myself in the musical material. Then I let the music settle and allowed each piece to find its place, in an almost unconscious way. Of course, the characterisation of each variation, the elaboration of the transitions and the construction of the overall form were the object of a great deal of reflection and of maturation. You might describe the way I approached the work as a process of constant toing and froing between intellectual reflection and musical sensibility.

In concert, right from the first note, I embark on a journey just as the listener does, always on the borderline between ‘playing’ and ‘listening/letting the work play itself’. That attitude is harder to recreate on record, but it’s at least partly what I was aiming for. It wouldn’t be true to say that I was inspired by other versions: I virtually never listen to harpsichord recordings. In the years leading up to the recording, my staple diet was more the vocal works of Bach, which I listened to enthusiastically.

C. F. The Goldberg Variations constitute the fourth and final part of the Clavier-Übung, the musical compendium Bach devoted to the keyboard, in which he systematically assembled every genre of keyboard music. Just as he had exhausted all the possibilities of the dance suite in the Partitas, in the Goldberg Variations he combines an incredible variety of styles – dance movements, contrapuntal movements, bravura pieces, a quodlibet – and affects, from impetuous or facetious virtuosity to a lament imbued with the most intense desolation. This wealth of invention is embedded in an extraordinary large-scale formal architecture, founded on a fairly simple structure that is strictly repeated, variation after variation: two sections, each consisting of sixteen bars played twice, which unfold the same bass for the theme and its thirty variations – three of which are cast in the minor mode. This repetition gives the work its unity, and the constantly renewed exploration of that harmonic progression does indeed give one a feeling of profound intimacy with the musical material. The concluding reprise of the theme is an absolutely sublime moment, which for me is the utmost in musical intensity.

C. F. My work with Café Zimmermann makes an enormous contribution to my development as a solo harpsichordist. That’s especially evident with Bach, all of whose orchestral music we have recorded: when I play the Italian Concerto, for example, in my mind’s ear I can hear the bass line on the cello and the double bass, the bassetto accompaniments of Vivaldi’s concertos. Bach asks the harpsichord to be a violin, an oboe, an orchestra or a choir; he requires the violin to play fugues and vocalists to sing a violin part. Knowing all these idioms is an incredible stimulus for the musical imagination. That isn’t necessarily the case with other composers: if I play D’Anglebert, I go back to being more or less exclusively a harpsichordist, listening much more to the instrument itself. this reCording aCtuallY exempliFies those two approaChes, sinCe it inCludes the goldberg variations perFormed on the harpsiChord, but also Fourteen Canons plaYed bY CaFé zimmermann and the songs on whiCh the Final variation, the quodlibet, is based. what prompted You to adopt this verY personal perspeCtive?
C. F. The idea of recording this complement to the programme along with the Goldberg Variations actually came from Jean-Paul Combet, who had recently done some fascinating research on the songs of the Quodlibet and the link with the theme of vanity. That led to a memorable improvisation session with the complicity of Dominique Visse and a merry band of musicians. In addition, the strings of Café Zimmermann realised the fourteen canons on the first eight notes of the bass of the Aria of the Goldbergs, which are little gems of contrapuntal genius. 22 22
how did You go about realising these Canons? was the idea to pursue the spirit oF ‘exerCises . . . Composed For musiC lovers, to reFresh their spirits’, as baCh desCribed the goldberg variations? did the harpsiChord have to disappear From this adaptation?
C. F. No, not at all! The harpsichord didn’t have to disappear from the realisation of the canons at all costs. Nevertheless, it didn’t really seem to me to be a necessity, after the listener has just heard the Variations on the harpsichord, to add fourteen canons on the same instrument. I’m very fond of this version with strings. iF You had the opportunitY to rereCord the goldberg variations todaY, would You Change anYthing?
C. F. My musical sensibility hasn’t altered radically since this recording, but of course I have evolved. Today my approach would probably be less ‘harpsichordistic’ or instinctive, more structured and polished. I haven’t listened to this disc for several years, and after playing them regularly in concert, I haven’t performed the Goldberg Variations for three years. But, as it happens, I’m going to be putting them back onto my harpsichord desk next month, and I’m already looking forward to reacquainting myself with them and discovering things anew, as happens every time I immerse myself in them again. As to the question of rerecording them, why not, some time in the future? The process of recording builds up such an intimate relationship with a work! At the same time, there are so many other pieces to explore that it doesn’t really seem like a priority to me.
