you originally recorded these Six ConCertS aveC pluSieurS inStrumentS (six concertos with seVeral instruments) not as an orchestral cycle But within the framework of a complete recording of Bach’s concertante works that extended from 2000 to 2010. this approach places the BrandenBurg concertos in the perspectiVe of concertos for solo instruments rather than suites for orchestra. what inspired you to do it that way?
Pablo Valetti. These Concerts avec plusieurs instruments, which are now generally referred to by the name of ‘Brandenburg’ Concertos, were not conceived as a unified whole: Bach composed them independently of each other at different moments in his career. So he himself didn’t necessarily, a priori, have the idea of a set. Then, in the hope of obtaining a post as a composer with the Margrave of Brandenburg, he dedicated these six concertos ‘with several instruments’ to him, and that’s how they acquired the posthumous nickname of ‘Brandenburg’ Concertos. Céline FrisCh. At the same time, as is often the case in his output, Bach compiled the set with the aim of achieving the greatest possible variety. Among other things, he focuses his demonstration on the various timbres of the orchestra: each concerto has a totally different instrumentation. The diversity of the concertos and the fact that their composition was spread over a period of time prompted us, in our recordings, to couple them with other orchestral pieces by Bach, with the aim of achieving similar variety in the solo line-up and devising recording programmes that work like concerts.

MENU how did you manage to keep the interpretations consistent oVer the years – the spirit, the momentum, the musicians?
Pablo Valetti. The project was conceived right from the start to extend over a number of years and to include the six Brandenburgs. When you define principles of interpretation that are valid enough to stand the test of time and you have alongside you a team of musicians committed to the same quest for the truth of the music, things unfold very naturally. Céline FrisCh. We also tackled other repertories between the recordings, which averted the risk of fatigue. As Pablo says, we’re lucky to be able to count on a nucleus of musicians who are totally committed to the ensemble’s projects. We’ve been developing our performing style for more than fifteen years now and we’re still as keen as ever on working together! you make these works a real feast of instrumental sound – a glittering array of timBres, exhilarating tempos, a dynamism that galVanises eVery moVement, a pronounced dancelike character, eminently soloistic Virtuosity. did you feel the need to take a new Broom eVen to works that haVe Been performed so often in recent years? how would you situate your interpretations in relation to your ‘pioneering’ elders?
Pablo Valetti. All those qualities are in the composition itself – we invented nothing! Everything is in the score. Earlier generations have brought us, among other things, a better understanding of the historical and musical context in which the repertory was written, and taught us to perceive the characters – the dance, the elegance of gesture, the references to the hunt, the ecstatic virtuosity – that the composer suggests or requires. This sharpness of focus is certainly more highly developed today than it ever has been – but that has only become possible thanks to the work of the past few decades. 18 18
each concerto has its own scoring, with the comBination of timBres creating a specific identity, a texture. what prompted you to choose small-scale instrumental forces?
Pablo Valetti. Our approach is essentially a chamber one, it’s true: we have the feeling that the dialogue between the voices is more flexible when we play one to a part. When that happens, each instrumentalist is an individual and reacts as such. For the First Concerto, however, the requirements of instrumental balance made it necessary to double some voices and to produce the sonority of an ensemble, so as to create greater contrast in the dialogue between the tutti group and the group of solo instruments. at the time when Bach was composing his BrandenBurg concertos, ViValdi was deVeloping solo concerto form in italy. Bach was familiar with the Venetian composer’s output; do we know if he took it as an inspiration for his BrandenBurgs – perhaps to differentiate himself from the model? did you attempt, in your interpretations, to recreate the sometimes exuBerant Virtuosity characteristic of the soloist in ViValdi’s concertos?
Pablo Valetti. It seems to me that Bach sought inspiration more in the direction of Dresden and its fabulous orchestra, which included first-rate soloists – notably the violinist Pisendel and the flautist Buffardin – and a wide variety of instruments with new and unexpected sonorities for the period. I have the impression that, more than the concerto form in itself, it was the instrumental timbres that attracted Bach, who shows the same interest in his cantatas and Passions. Céline FrisCh. Bach had already fully assimilated the form of the Italian solo concerto in his transcriptions for the organ or the harpsichord of concertos from Vivaldi’s L’estro armonico and concertos by Marcello and Torelli. The exploration of timbre found in the Brandenburgs is close to the Concerti con molti istrumenti – which Vivaldi actually wrote for the Dresden orchestra. 19 19

Céline FrisCh. Café Zimmermann was created around a group of musicians and not the figure of an emblematic conductor. Certain decisions imply the participation of several other musicians of the ensemble – the choice of who to perform with or which repertory to play, for example. One or other of us may feel more or less of an affinity with the different aspects of the direction of the ensemble – some of which, by the way, don’t have much to do with the music – but we run things jointly and in the final analysis we take the decisions together. And as far as the musical direction is concerned, Pablo is much better than I am at taking on the role of leader when we need one!

when you founded your ensemBle in 1998, you named it after the leipzig coffee-house, a place of exchange and conViViality, where Bach directed his orchestra, the collegium musicum. was that a way of setting the tone for the group? do we know if Bach performed the BrandenBurg concertos with his orchestra there?
Céline FrisCh. Yes, we do feel very much at home in that description of a place of cultural interaction (we all come from quite different cultures, Quebec, the Czech Republic, Argentina, France, Italy, Spain), of shared conviviality in music, of confrontation of different viewpoints. Ever since its creation, Café Zimmermann has been a forum for enriching human and musical exchanges. Although it constitutes a well-defined historical reference, the ensemble’s name still gives us plenty of freedom in terms of repertory, because we know relatively little about exactly what was played at those weekly concerts. I have no idea whether Bach gave his Brandenburg Concertos in Herr Zimmermann’s establishment. It’s likely in the case of the Fifth, which his sons performed, as they did in the case of the other concertos for one or more harpsichords and the violin concertos. where did you acquire this loVe of Bach, who occupies a preponderant place in your concert programmes and your discography?
Pablo Valetti. Several factors were decisive in our choice to record the orchestral music of Bach. The first was the harpsichord: there aren’t all that many concertos for the instrument, and it seemed an obvious idea to look at those. And Céline is such a wonderful harpsichordist! Another element was the fact that Café Zimmermann is made up of excellent musicians from many different horizons: the rich inventiveness of the inner voices in Bach and the variety of his scoring provided an opportunity to give expression to that diversity.

He’s the only composer who’s never off the desk of my harpsichord! what does each of you deriVe from directing an ensemBle that you don’t get from your respectiVe instruments?
Pablo Valetti. The process of musical direction of Café Zimmermann takes place in a spirit of dialogue and exchange that is extremely enriching. I learn from my colleagues every day. For me, to ‘direct’ means to choose between their propositions when that becomes necessary – otherwise we’re playing chamber music. if you had the opportunity to rerecord the BrandenBurg concertos today, would you change anything?
Pablo Valetti. In absolute terms, no. Such changes as might occur would be limited to details, nothing substantial. Nevertheless, if we did find ourselves in front of a set of microphones again, the result might perhaps be different all the same, who knows?
