1. Introduction The Leadership Academy and Training Institute was initiated as a direct response to an era in South Africa, underscored by social Injustice, inequality, and oppression. The first course was presented in a shack in Gugulethu in Athlone, 20 years ago, a community on the Cape Flats birthed out of Apartheid’s Group Areas act of 1958.

CAPACITY

The Capacity Building Programme as LATI was previously known responded with immediacy to the lack of capacity, resources and information available to people of colour in South Africa, and in this case, the non-profit sector who served black communities.

Today the programme continues to bridge the divide between this country’s rich and poor, by building the human capacity and social infrastructure of the non-profit sector through assisting civil society, government and para-government parastatals, including the private sector to respond to issues of poverty, inequality and disenfranchisement through a widespread engine of learning.

A learning that will systematically respond to, provoke and disrupt systems, theories, and mindsets, in order to ensure the following outcomes:

is a Youth Development movement that focuses on the holistic development of children and youth

The journey walked along side Community Chest – Nkosinathi Mahlanyana, Director of Lifa LeKhaya Foundation, Gugulethu.

Lifa LeKhaya Foundation is a registered NPO since 2015.

For as long as the organisation has been in existence, its operations were minimal and unstructured.

This year a new strategy was taken that also included readjusting the leadership roles and acquiring strategies that would assist in developing, improving and managing the organisation and its programs.

During the Community Chest workshops that we attended as an organisation, the most greatest thing happened, a program that we came up with as part of the role plays, has now become the organization's leading program that will not only be the key driver of the organisation, but will become what will put this organization on the global map.

So Community Chest, thank you for rekindling the ideas we had while dreaming and help turn them into brands.

Thank you for taking a cleaner at an office and making them realize that they're also a fundraiser and a potential project manager in their organizations.

This is when Community Chest came along. Everything then fell into place.

Our clients need to become drivers of their own development” - Heinelize Knoesen Project Manager at Sinethema, Malmesbury My journey with Community Chest started in 2013 at a BOD workshop in the West Coast when I founded a Youth project. I have completed all the courses and finished off with the Governance course last year. What an amazing experience each workshop had been with the networking and the valuable information that was shared. I soaked up the information and was hungry for more.

My 2019 Learning journey had changed my worldview, made me look at things differently. I am busy developing a voice to speak up against injustice, inequality and discrimination in our region. One of the lectures said, go and be the disruption in your community, go and create the waves. These social issues had always been there, it always bothered me, but I never had the confidence to address it skilful.

I have worked at two different NGO ever since, and I too Community Chest with me and encouraged everyone to attend.

This is what the course provides for me: • the confidence to know that what we do is not for non -profit but for social profit and therefore we can work from a position of strength not weakness • To understand that I am also on a journey of selfdiscovery in partnership with others • It widens my perspective, influenced the way I work, • The value this course has added to our organisation is really on a next level.

Never underestimate the day of small beginnings. At last year’s Graduation, I heard about the opportunity to do Honours degree in community development through a scholarship with Cornerstone and Community Chest partnership. When I heard, it I knew I had to apply because this had been a dream for a long time. I am still pinching myself. Just Do it !! Don’t wait !! Just Try. Its never too late to live that dream.

Just a few days after the 2018 graduation I made contact to enquire about the scholarship. After many phone calls, serval emails of following up, of interview I got the scholarship. I started the Honours program in the second semester. Preserve is key if you want to live your dream, if you want to see more.

Sinethema is based in Malmesbury on the West Coast, in the Western Cape.

They have a specific focus on healthcare in low-income households. Tuberculosis; Prevention, Early Intervention and Aftercare is paramount to their comprehensive community development approach.

Three of our staff members attended various LEADERSHIP ACADEMY AND TRAINING INSTITUTE courses in 2019.

Armed with the new knowledge we gained, we have reviewed all of our organisation’s policies, procedures and systems and are implementing a number of changes to improve our governance, project and volunteer management.

We have introduced an induction process for the recruitment of new board members and have been able to assist our existing board members in clarifying their roles and responsibilities. Our community development workers found the Basics in Organisational Development and Project Management training particularly useful having come from education backgrounds with limited business knowledge and management skills. They were excited to be able to play a larger, more proactive role

in the short and longer term planning of their projects and to have a better understanding of the financial implications of their decisions in the organisation.

While we know they are a valuable resource, we have not embraced the use of volunteers as an organisation in the past as we have not had the capacity or systems to manage them properly. We have started our volunteer recruitment for 2020 better guided and informed to ensure our projects benefit from this human capital injection with clear systems to follow and service agreements to implement. – Leanne Reid Thank you to the trainers who went beyond merely imparting knowledge but shared practical experience and advice with participants at a level that all participants could identify and relate to.
