ELTE BUSINESS ECONOMICS
SUMMER UNIVERSITY DATE: 13-18 JULY 2020 ELTE Business Economics Summer University offers 5-6 one-week courses each summer ranging from ones focusing on developing skills to ones covering standard subjects. Organized in the middle of July, the courses involve 25 hours of classroom teaching, and students passing the exams may obtain 3 ECTS credits from their home institutions. In addition, the program includes evening talks and social programs like welcome reception and walking tours in Budapest. It was first organized in 2018. Most participants come from European countries, even though we had participants coming from places as far as Bangladesh. “I WANTED TO SEE HOW UNIVERSITIES WORK OUTSIDE OF SWITZERLAND” Laura, whom I met in a coffee break in the second week of BESU, arrived from Zürich. We talked about why she decided for BESU and how finds it.
How did you like the extracurricular programs like excursions and city walks? Well, this is my first week, so I didn’t have the opportunity to join them yet. We had a quick introduction at the beginning of the week, which was led by two students. They were really helpful and gave us some good recommendations for sightseeing, good Cafés and shops. Regarding the extracurricular programs and city walks, I only can say, what I heard from other students, that the programs were all well-organized and that they had a good time. Given what I heard I do intend to participate next time. Also, I don’t want to miss out on any of the sights in Budapest. How does Hungarian and Swiss higher education differ on your view? The main difference is the length of the lessons. We do have coffee breaks after 45 min lessons. This is not the case for Hungary. I can add here, that Profs have a good sense of humor and are still very professional. Our classes last usually only 45 minutes. What other courses would you have liked to attend in addition to the ones actual offered? I prefer topics within humanities and social sciences to narrowly economic ones. So I would very much like lectures on social competencies and sociological issues, as opposed to tedious technocratic matters.
How did you come across ELTE? I was browsing through the international possibilities on my university’s home page when I found ELTE. It looked a promising opportunity, since Budapest is close, and the courses are similar to the ones we have in Switzerland. What were your expectations, and were they satisfied? I wanted to see how universities work outside of Switzerland and how they approach some specific topics like economic policy. Other purposes were to improve my English in an international environment. These are going to be achieved, I think, since the teachers are highly qualified and speak excellent English. Also the Hungarian students are friendly and open-minded. This was a great opportunity to learn more about the Hungarian culture and to open my horizon.
How did you like Hungarians? Were they different from what you expected? The general picture seems to be that they are reserved or even unfriendly, but I think that’s completely false. I really liked the locals; people are helpful and smiling. Each country has its share of cold and stern people, but this, on the whole, is not characteristics of Hungarians. Do you plan to visit next year as well? I would love to, and for two reasons. One is ELTE with its quality teachers, classes and courses. The other one is Budapest, which is genuine experience, with far more places to visit than I expected.

After the arrival we contact the students, in the first few days we go through the administration procedure together, to help them receive residence permit (for nonEEA students), student ID card, etc. We show how they can take up courses, get access to lectures’ and seminars’
slides, pick exam dates in our university network Neptun and Moodle systems. And they are cordially invited to all of the events of GTI, including the semester opening and closing parties. Besides, ESN organizes programs, which move on a wide range, like visiting pubs or cultural trips, like the ‘Welcome Weekend’ when students travel to Eger together. Apart from helping in administration we aid them to get to know our city, university, cultural habits. We are available anytime to show them the breathtaking sightseeing, monuments, to suggest amazing cities that they can visit during their freetime. GETTING TO KNOW BUDAPEST Once populated by Celts and Romans, Attila the Hun, as well as Lombards, the clan of Árpád settled in the area when the Hungarian tribes moved to the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century. Hungary became a Christian state under the Árpád dynasty (1000-1301), later ruled by Angevin Kings from the Castle Hill in Buda. Did you know? Pest has Slavic origin, meaning "furnace", just as the German for Buda, "Ofen", as lime kilns were common in the area. After the golden age of Hungary mostly associated with the Renaissance court of Matthias Corvinus, Central Hungary became part of the Ottoman Empire. Did you know? Turkish baths still in operation, built around the numerous hot springs in Budapest. In the early 19th century Pest became the center of progress in innovation and ideas, as well as the 1848 revolution, and after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 became the Eastern capital of the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary. In 1873 Buda, Pest, and Óbuda (including the area of the Roman Settlement Aquincum) was united and Budapest was born. Did you know? You can use ferry boats to cross the Danube, to ride along the World Heritage Site cityscape. Can you guess which of the bridges was built by English engineers and which by French? In the 1980’s the population reached 2,1 million, and today Budapest and its agglomeration produces about 40 % of the country’s GDP.
