REAKDOWN

Breakdown, also known as weathering or distressing, includes a range of processes to make a garment look worn, old, or soiled to suit the character or scene. This is completed within the dye or embellishment department and by specialist breakdown artists.

Breakdown Task Specifics

Use tools, techniques and processes to break down: - Boots as if they have been worn for marching through mud - Samples of blood/bullet holes - A shirt with several years of daily discolouring from sweat and subtle age - Waistcoat with subtle wear and tear, as if worn daily for several yeast For convincing breakdown, the aim is to fast-track natural processes and with a range of tones and colours. For example with general wear and tear, the garment would have been exposed to sweat, rain/water, dust, food, and ‘general grub’, which would impact the garment through stains in a range of browns, greys and beige tones, and difference in textures such as waxiness, fraying or creasing on the fabric. Also consider that if this is a garment an ordinary person wears daily, they would have tried to clean stains and repair tears, so having a difference in intensity is also important. Therefore, the layering of techniques is the key to convincing breakdown work.

Skills covered in this project - making holes - threadbare effect - sanding/grating fibres - using ‘dirty down’ - ironing in aging creases
