Compartiendo la Historia Puertorriqueña En algunas ocasiones cubrimos eventos culturales comunitarios donde la celebración es resaltada no solo por el mensaje si no también por la espontaneidad, el entusiasmo y el carisma de los participantes. Este fue el caso del evento Estampas Puertorriqueñas celebrado en el Holyoke Council on Aging (COA, por sus siglas en inglés) el pasado 19 de noviembre.

El grupo Reunión Social, un grupo organizado por COA y Blanca Ortiz en el 2002, presentó esta pintoresca celebración la cual incluyó baile, música y estampas tradicionales de Puerto Rico. El guión y la dirección estuvieron a cargo de Mirna Rivera, y la música estuvo bajo la dirección de Yolanda Nogué y el Taller Camándula. El Grupo Folklórico El Coquí de bomba y plena, compuesto de estudiantes de Holyoke, contribuyeron a la exitosa celebración, dirigidos por Norma Rodríguez Tañón.

Felicitamos a las actrices de estampas y a las bailarinas del Grupo Amapolas – Aleja Figueroa, Felicita Campos, Esperanza Márquez, Blanca Ortiz, Mirna Rivera, María Negrón, Julita Rojas, Felícita Rodríguez, Carmen Morales, Gloria Urbina, Carla Neiswanger, y Margarita Arona. También a Nilka Ortiz que fungió como maestra de ceremonia.

Estudio Detalla la Nueva Realidad Puertorriqueña por MANUEL FRAU-RAMOS El Puerto Rican Cultural Project (PRCP) y la Biblioteca Pública de Holyoke fueron los anfitriones de la presentación del nuevo libro, Puerto Ricans at the Dawn of the New Millennium, publicado por el Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños de Hunter College (CENTRO).

La actividad se llevó a cabo el viernes 31 de octubre de 2014 a las 6 de la tarde en el Salón Comunitario de la Biblioteca Pública de Holyoke. La charla atrajo un número considerable de público, tanto de Holyoke como de pueblos adyacentes como Amherst, Northampton, Chicopee y Springfield.

La charla estuvo a cargo de uno de los co-editores del libro, el profesor y director del Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños de Hunter College, Dr. Edwin Meléndez. Esta fue la primera presentación del libro en el oeste de Massachusetts.

De acuerdo a Patricia Silver, autora de uno de los capítulos del libro, las proyecciones indican que para el 2020 los puertorriqueños superarán a los cubanos en la Florida.

Florida no solamente es uno de los destinos migratorios preferidos de los isleños, si no también de los puertorriqueños residentes en otros estados.

En el área metropolitana de Orlando, la población puertorriqueña está dividida entre isleños y aquellos nacidos en la diáspora.

Meléndez ha sido uno de los pocos investigadores que por mucho tiempo ha cuestionado la percepción popular y el sensacionalismo periodístico sobre la supuesta “fuga de cerebros.” En esta charla, éste volvió a recalcar lo que en otras ocasiones ha señalado - que no existe una diferencia proporcional entre la cantidad de jóvenes profesionales que han salido de la isla recientemente con los niveles documentados en el pasado. En otras palabras, los datos no apoyan el argumento de una “fuga de cerebros.”

Otro hallazgo sobresaliente es el hecho de que los estados de Texas, Florida, California y Massachusetts han remplazando a New York como destino preferido de muchos puertorriqueños que han salido de la isla.

Por otro lado, Meléndez resaltó la nueva realidad migratoria de los puertorriqueños dentro de los Estados Unidos. Existe una creciente movilidad entre los puertorriqueños en busca de trabajo, donde quiera que los mismos se encuentren. Al igual que los isleños, la búsqueda de mejores condiciones socioeconómicas es uno de los motivos principales para moverse a otros estados, sugiere la investigación. Siete de cada diez puertorriqueños que se han mudado de un estado a otro en la última década han nacido en Estados Unidos.

Puerto Ricans at the Dawn of the New Millennium, editado por Edwin Meléndez y Carlos Vargas Ramos, reúne las investigaciones mas recientes sobre la nueva realidad demográfica y socio-económica de los puertorriqueños.

Meléndez comenzó su presentación resaltando uno de los hallazgos mas sobresalientes que están incluidos en el libro el cual señala que la población puertorriqueña en los Estados Unidos ya superó al número de residentes en Puerto Rico.

Para el 2012, 4,970,604 puertorriqueños residían en los Estados Unidos, mientras 3,515,844 residían en la isla. Este movimiento poblacional constituye una ola migratoria que compite con la Gran Migración de la década de los 50, resaltó Meléndez.

Por primera vez en la historia de Puerto Rico, la población de la isla disminuyó - a menos de 3.5 millones de residentes, Meléndez señaló.

Otro punto sobresaliente es la creciente importancia del estado de la Florida como destino migratorio de los puertorriqueños. Según señala Meléndez, de acuerdo a los pronósticos demográficos, la población Boricua en ese estado alcanzará la cifra del millón en el 2014. Sin embargo, durante el proceso investigativo para el libro, los investigadores encontraron que en el 2013 Florida ya tenía una población de cerca de un millón de puertorriqueños, alrededor de 987,000.

Uno de los hallazgos mas interesantes que se encuentran en el libro es que la dispersión geográfica de los puertorriqueños continentales puede contribuir a mejorar las condiciones socioeconómicas de estos. Para los jóvenes, el enlistarse en el Servicio Militar puede ser el camino hacia arriba en la movilidad socioeconómica. Los veteranos tienen niveles de ingreso mas altos y niveles menores de desempleos y pobreza que los que no son veteranos.

Study Details Puerto Rican’s New Reality by MANUEL FRAU-RAMOS The Puerto Rican Cultural Project (PRCP) and the Holyoke Public Library hosted the presentation of the new book, Puerto Ricans at the Dawn of the New Millennium, published by the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CENTRO).

The event took place on Friday, October 31, 2014 at 6 pm in the Community Room of the Holyoke Public Library. The talk attracted a considerable amount of public, both from Holyoke and adjacent towns like Amherst, Northampton, Chicopee and Springfield.

The talk was given by one of the co-editors of the book, Professor and Director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, Dr. Edwin Meléndez. This was the first presentation of the book in western Massachusetts.

According to Patricia Silver, author of one of the chapters of the book, projections indicate that by 2020, Puerto Ricans will exceed Cubans in Florida.

Florida is not only one of the favorite migration destinations of the islanders, but also of Puerto Rican residents of other states. In the metropolitan area of Orlando, the Puerto Rican population is divided between islanders and those born in the diaspora.

Puerto Ricans at the Dawn of the New Millennium, edited by Edwin Meléndez and Carlos Vargas Ramos, brings together the latest research on the new demographic and socio-economic reality of Puerto Ricans.

Meléndez began his presentation by highlighting one of the most salient findings that are included in the book which states that the Puerto Rican population in the United States already exceeded the number of residents in Puerto Rico.

In 2012, 4,970,604 of Puerto Ricans resided in the United States, while 3,515,844 lived on the island. This population movement is a migratory wave that competes with the Great Migration of the 50s, highlighted Meléndez.

For the first time in the history of Puerto Rico, the island’s population was reduced - to less than 3.5 million residents, Meléndez said.

Another salient point is the growing importance of the state of Florida as a migratory destination of Puerto Ricans. As pointed by Meléndez, according to demographic forecasts, the Boricua population in that state will reach the million in 2014. However, during the research process for the book, the researchers found that in 2013 Florida already had a population of about a million Puerto Ricans, approximately 987,000.

Meléndez has been one of the few researchers who have long questioned the popular perception and newspaper sensationalism about the socalled “brain drain.” In this talk, he reemphasized what in the past he had indicated - that there is no proportional difference between the number of young professionals who have recently left the island to levels documented in the past. In other words, the data does not support the argument of a “brain drain.”

Another noteworthy finding is the fact that the states of Texas, Florida, California and Massachusetts have been replacing New York as a destination of choice for many Puerto Ricans who have left the island.

On the other hand, Meléndez highlighted the new migration situation of Puerto Ricans in the United States. There is an increasing mobility among Puerto Ricans looking for work, wherever it may be. Like the islanders, the search for better economic conditions is one of the main reasons to move to other states, suggests the research. Seven out of every ten Puerto Ricans who have moved between states in the last decade have been born in the United States.

One of the more interesting findings that are in the book is that the geographical dispersion of mainland Puerto Ricans can help improve their socioeconomic conditions. For young people, enlisting in military service may be the way upward in socioeconomic mobility. Veterans have higher levels of income and lower unemployment levels and poverty than nonveterans.

Creating families: A labor of love by MIGUEL ARCE

There they stood, thirty years after they had started their journey. Debbie and Maureen first met as investigators with the former Massachusetts Department of Social Services, now the Department of Children and Families (DCF). It was mid-November 2014 and thirty years later they continue to labor in the field of child welfare. Debbie is now the Area Director of DCF in Holyoke and Greenfield; while Maureen is the Director of the Elms College undergraduate social work department. Thirty years later they stand at the Westfield Boys and Girls Club at an adoption event trying to identify, recruit and train prospective adoptive parents. They are trying to create families for the more than 150 children in western Massachusetts who are freed for adoption. They were there with students of social work, mature social work professionals, prospective adoptive parents and precious children who were freed for adoption on a Sunday afternoon. It was a labor of love.

There they stood with over thirty graduate and undergraduate social work students from Springfield College and Elms College, graduate and undergraduates respectively. The students stood ready to become “buddies” to children who had come looking for forever families. They watched over the children, or served pizza, or assisted with arts and crafts and cleaned up after. Thirty students made a declaration of their commitment to work to provide an atmosphere where children would have a chance for adoption. It was a labor of love.

There they stood with over thirty DCF social workers and advocates from the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) trying to dispel myths and misconceptions of the role of DCF. Myth: “It’s really hard to become an adoptive parent”; fact: while there are guidelines, the social workers are there to help you. Myth: “You must own your own home to be an adoptive parent”; fact, you need not own a home to be an adoptive parent. Myth: “People who work full time cannot be an adoptive parent”; fact, many parents work full time. Myth: “Each child must have his or her own bedroom”; fact, sharing a bedroom is permitted. Myth: “Only wealthy families can be adoptive parents”; fact, parents just need to be financially stable. Myth: “You must be able to speak English”; fact, the agency does not discriminate on the basis of language. The DCF social workers and MARE advocates were dispelling myths to prospective families attending the mid-November adoption event. It was a labor of love.

rates of incarcerations and lower rates of homelessness. Children who age-out of the child welfare system without the support of a permanent family are at great risk. Families support and nourish the child throughout their life. Family cohesion, flexibility and communication are a labor of love.

There they stood, around thirty precious youngsters ages 10 to 15 looking for a forever home. Those priceless children may have not even known that being a parent is a gift. To become a parent is the dream. The greatest accomplishment of a parent is their children. Adoption has given and continues to give people the opportunity to lead fulfilling, meaningful lives alongside their children, and in turn, provides children opportunities in life. The commitment and limitless dedication is a labor of love.

Para entender esto tenemos que ubicarnos en el origen de la filosofía y esto se dio aproximadamente seis siglos antes de Cristo. Esto pasó cuando se empieza a dar respuesta a las preguntas existenciales de siempre, pero dando respuestas desde un punto de vista racional, no respondiendo basándose en mitos, cuentos, ni leyendas, si no respuestas utilizando la razón. Por ejemplo: cuando llueve, ya no se dice que es un Dios el que llora, si no que es la condensación de las aguas que están en las nubes. O sea, que las cosas ya no suceden por capricho divino si no porque hay una razón que las explica.

Es Sócrates quien traslada la reflexión filosófica de lo físico de la naturaleza material al ámbito del ser humano, es decir de cuestiones éticas y morales. Buscó la esencia de la justicia, de la bondad. Luego es Platón quien condiciona mas nuestro sistema cognitivo, sobre todo en la forma

como juzgamos las cosas, y en nuestro sistema moral. El desarrolló ‘la idealidad’ de las cosas para lo cual le dio categoría filosófica al cielo (no como un lugar del mas allá) sino como un espacio ideal donde están los valores mas puros del ser humano a los cuales debemos llegar.

Ni Buda ni Cristo han tenido tanta influencia en nuestra mente como Platón. El interpretó y creó la estructura mental conceptual, categorial de nuestra percepción. Cuando ahora hacemos esos equilibrios mentales, Platón está dentro de nuestro cerebro, no tanto en el contenido si no en la forma de procesar la percepción de las cosas.

Por ejemplo, en la publicidad se nos muestra que nos gusta y preferimos una naranja ideal, totalmente redonda, casi perfecta, artificial y de plástico. Pero paradigmática; que la verdadera naranja que es real, que está arrugada, envejecida e imperfecta; entonces hay una determinación constituyente en nosotros que nos hace pensar de esa manera.

Ahora nacemos con lo que se podría decir un ADN social categorial de lo que son los valores.

Todos y cada uno de los que nos creemos humanos sabemos aún sin haberlo estudiado, qué es lo bueno y qué es lo malo, y si no lo sabemos racionalmente, lo intuimos, porque venimos predispuestos a sentir lo que pensamos y hacemos. Somos capaces de sentir lo que

otros están sintiendo. Por naturaleza somos empáticos o capaces de ponernos en los zapatos del otro. Esto nos identifica y nos da humanidad.

Es el caso contrario de personas que no tienen esta empatía y que no les importa lo que le pasa a los demás. Los psicópatas aproximadamente son el cuatro por ciento de la población. Son capaces de causar emoción, y emoción social inclusive, y mover masas, pero no son capaces de sentir lo que piensan, ni mucho menos sentir lo que otros sienten o padecen. Llegan a ser deshumanizados, desalmados, capaces de cualquier crimen.

Felizmente la educación, aún muy lenta, avanza y está quitando la violencia en el mundo, a pesar de lo que se pueda ver en los medios de comunicación (que solo venden “noticias” violentas). La educación es una fuerza pacificadora. Nos enseña altruismo, tolerancia y consideración mutua que son el camino a la paz, y así cada vez estamos adquiriendo mas humanidad.

future of the Hispanic Family Festival of Holyoke, what was suspected was confirmed. In a short, terse email, Diosdado López, executive director of the organization that owns the festival, announced that La Familia Hispana, Inc., is not organizing the festival anymore.

Like other Puerto Rican festivals that have disappeared in the last two decades, the main reason was the financial situation. The costs continued to increase year after year, but the financial support of the sponsors kept shrinking. In other words, the costs of organizing the festival were much higher than the income generated.

En Holyoke … ¡No Más Festival de la Familia Hispana!

Después de varios meses de rumores acerca del futuro del Festival de la Familia Hispana de Holyoke se confirmó lo que se sospechaba. En un corto y escueto correo electrónico, el director ejecutivo de la organización dueña del festival, Diosdado López, anunció que la Familia Hispana Inc., no va a volver a organizar el festival.

Al igual que otros festivales puertorriqueños que han desaparecido en los últimas dos décadas, la razón principal fue la situación financiera. Los costos seguían aumentando año tras año, pero el apoyo financiero de los patrocinadores disminuía aceleradamente. En otras palabras, los costos de organizar el festival eran mucho mayores que los ingresos generados.

En muchas ocasiones no valorizamos lo que tenemos hasta que lo perdemos.

Poesía / Poetry Westfield Latina Singer-Songwriter Publishes First Book Westfield, MA. November 15, 2014. Isabel Marcheselli, a singersongwriter, piano teacher and Westfield resident, is thrilled to announce the recent publication of her first book of poems and song lyrics, Heart’s Eye, Selected Poems and Songs by Isabel Marcheselli, this fall.

Her 64-page chapbook features nature and human interest poems written well over a span of 20 years as well as original song lyrics from her pop/folk album, Isabel and The Whispers. It also showcases her nature photography and art. “Heart’s Eye is a long-dreamed, hybrid kind of poetry chapbook and a companion to my CD. It is very much meant to be performed,” says Isabel of her book. Here is an excerpt from one of her poems celebrating nature, “Talking to Comet:” To listen to you/exhale/makes me greedy/for the air/I breathe/out here/where the ropes of sunlight/give me a bridle/to hold onto.

Isabel Marcheselli was born in New York City to South American parents and began writing poetry as a teen.

She graduated with honors from Cornell University in upstate New York, where she met and was mentored by the renowned American poet, A.R. Ammons, one of her literary influences along with Pablo Neruda and Walt Whitman.

A newcomer to Western Massachusetts, Isabel has sung at many New York venues including The Bitter End (where Bob Dylan played). Her music has been embraced by audiences for its lyricism and soulfulness.

Amherst Tributo a Julia de Burgos @ UMass La Asociación Puertorriqueña de Amherst fue la anfitriona del programa cultural Homenaje a Julia de Burgos el pasado 14 de noviembre en el University of Massachusetts - Amherst. Lucelia De Jesús y la agrupación Tertulia Julia de Burgos presentaron un maravilloso programa. Comenzaron con una semblanza a la poeta nacional de Puerto Rico a cargo de Catalina García.

La primera parte del programa - La Obra de Julia Parte 1 - comenzó con el poema A Julia de Burgos a cargo de Chelsea Jordan Martínez e incluyó varios poemas originales. La segunda parte del homenaje consistió de poemas musicalizados, entre ellos el famoso y aclamado Río Grande de Loíza. Participaron en el programa conmemorativo María Florez, Pedro Dávila, Juan Matos, Jain Segarra, Julia Sabia, Angela Guerrero, Lucelia De Jesús, Deborah González Juan Antonio (Papo) Castillo, Gabriel De Jesús y el conjunto de Bomba y Plena de Amherst Regional High School.

Izamiento de la Bandera de Puerto Rico Este año el izamiento de la bandera puertorriqueña en Amherst fue dedicado al ex juez de la Corte Juvenil Luis Pérez durante la 18º celebración del Día de la Bandera de Puerto Rico en Massachusetts. El evento se llevó a cabo el 11 de noviembre frente a la alcaldía.

La ceremonia también fue dedicada al ex profesor de la Universidad de Massachusetts Luis Fuentes, fallecido recientemente, y a la poeta nacional de Puerto Rico, Julia de Burgos en el centenario de su nacimiento.

El evento fue organizado por Vladimir Morales y la Asociación Puertorriqueña de Amherst.

Holyoke Reconocen a Marisol Fontánez

La Familia Hispana, Inc. y la organización Holyoke Organizing for Latino Action (H.O.L.A., por sus siglas en inglés), reconocieron a Marisol Fontánez durante la Ceremonia del Izamiento de la Bandera de Puerto Rico en Holyoke el pasado 3 de noviembre frente a la alcaldía.

Darlene Elías, representando a H.O.L.A. y Diosdado López de La Familia Hispana, Inc. reconocieron a Marisol por sus 15 años de servicios a la comunidad. Marisol trabajó en las organizaciones comunitarias de Holyoke, Nueva Esperanza y el Community Education Project.

Actualmente trabaja en el Picknelly Adult & Family Education Center.

A Thanksgiving to Remember @ Enlace de Familias

by ALISHA SENEY & SUNNY TRIVEDI On Friday, November 21st, Enlace de Familias hosted their annual Thanksgiving Turkey Bingo for families who are apart of Enlace programming. Thanksgiving Turkey Bingo is an annual Family Fun Night event at Enlace, located on Main Street. The event featured 19 families playing bingo, who were given the opportunity to walk away with a Thanksgiving meal. Staff and volunteers dedicated their evening to make sure things went smoothly and that families had fun.

It was the fourth annual Thanksgiving Turkey Bingo, which is free of charge for families who are consistently involved in at least one of the many programs at Enlace. These include, but are not limited to involvement in Early Literacy, Nurturing Fathers, MAnaging & PArenting, or any Enlace weekly workshop/parent trainings.

Dulce enemiga mía de MARCELA SERRANO (Alfaguara, 2013. 250 páginas) La célebre novelista chilena Marcela Serrano es la autora de Dulce enemiga mía, una antología de veinte cuentos protagonizados mayormente por mujeres - mujeres de muchas partes del mundo y de muchos niveles sociales, mujeres que sin embargo comparten entre sí experiencias semejantes, sugiriendo que estas experiencias femeninas tal vez sean universales.

En su mayoría estas protagonistas se sienten solas, aisladas, sin ningún propósito que haga una diferencia en el mundo. Son víctimas de culturas que valoran las contribuciones de hombres y menosprecian las de las mujeres.

Con una sola excepción.

El último cuento, 2 de julio, perfila a Pedro Ángel Reyes. Su mujer se burla de él y lo humilla humillándole con “¿para qué va a perder el tiempo tu jefe con un inútil como tú?” Sin embargo, Pedro se ilusiona con servir un papel importante en las próximas elecciones. Mientras camina a “ejercer la honrosa tarea de representante de su partido,” se agacha para delicadamente quitar de la carretera el cadáver de un gato aplastado por un motociclista, diciendo para sí, “cuántas muertes deberá sufrir el pobre.”

Si se sospecha que el gato aplastado es símbolo de cómo sale Pedro del gran papel que piensa desempeñar, se tendrá razón.

El tema del desengaño palpita por los cuentos. En La yegua, Ana María, de clase acomodada, lucha por mantenerse en línea para lucirle atractiva a su esposo. Pero un día descube a su marido visitando un barrio “que [ella] nunca visitaba, uno de esos que explican los siete millones de habitantes que le asignan a la ciudad.” ¿Y para qué? En Damascos y calabazas, Leticia se burla de las mujeres que nunca salen de la casa, haciendo todo por computadora hasta que un día ella misma llega a ser una de aquellas.

En Misiones la yo narradora se queda encaprichada de un supuesto autor que guarda religiosamente su portafolios en que supuestamente está su precioso manuscrito. Encaprichada, eso es, hasta que descubre lo que verdaderamente guarda adentro.

En los próximos cuentos, las protagonistas empiezan a tomar el control, aunque a veces sus esfuerzos resultan inútiles y de tan pequeña importancia que nadie se fija en ellos. En Charquito de agua turbia, la protagonista, que simbólicamente queda sin nombre, es “una persona muy recatada, muy limpia, muy bien educada. Y siempre peinaba su cabello al salir de la oficina para enfrentarse con el mundo de afuera, aunque allí nadie la conociera.” Así hasta que un día, al salir del trabajo, entra en un salón de belleza y pide un corte de pelo: “nada de pelos aburridos ni lacios, lo quiero cortito, con mucho movimiento...lo quiero vivo.”

En Sin Dios ni Ley, Laura Gutiérrez, una mujer rica cuyo esposo nunca está por razones de negocios, descubre que su hija Sara Alicia queda embarazada por una violación violenta. Laura le arregla en secreto un aborto: “Ella siempre supo que ante una adversidad debería arreglárselas sola...la única justicia posible es la que se hace con la propia mano.” En A mí me tocó la bandera, aparece la figura histórica de Javiera Carrera diciendo que “soy la hermana de José Miguel, el prócer de la Independencia de Chile...¡Qué no habría hecho si hubiese sido un varón.”

En Cerco eléctrico el esposo de Magdalena puso un cerco eléctrico alrededor de su casa después de que les robaron la segunda vez. Ella se queda pensando si el cerco es para la protección contra los enemigos de afuera o si es para aprisionarla dentro de la casa. En Hembras, dos huérfanas tienen destinos que parecen ser muy diferentes: Anabella vive la vida rica “en una casa preciosa” de la cual no puede salir mientras que Marilyn sale cada mañana a pelear por su alimento y por su seguridad, “una vagabunda pletórica de libertad.”

De vez en cuando los cuentos reflejan peligrosos ambientes políticos, como en Su norte, donde la protagonista espera inútilmente para saber a dónde llevaron preso a su esposo. En El robo durante la guerra en Dubrovnik, Croacia, la protagonista se esconde en su armario mientras unos ladrones

entran y le roban todo lo de valor.

Decide después regalar todo la ropa y todo lo que le queda de valor adonde dan “ayuda a los refugiados.” Así, no tiene nada, protegiéndose de futuros robos. Es en la República de Montenegro, cerca de una playa, donde tiene lugar la acción de El Balneario. Irma, la viuda enferma, sufre de soledad y amargura. Le molesta todo, aun los turistas que “huelen a aceite bronceador.”

Técnica que Serrano utiliza sumamente bien es el de desarrollar la trama tan bien que no necesita deletrear el desenlace, dejándole al lector para darse cuenta de lo que pasa al final. Así es en Otoño, El consuelo, y El hombre del valle. Éste último termina siniestramente con “Casi siempre una asesina es la creación de un hombre que la ha maltratado.”

El cuento que da título a la antología, Dulce enemiga mía, refleja el poder del amor. Habla Dulcinea, la de don Quijote: “¿Puede alguna competir conmigo? ¿La Amaranta de Macondo? ¿La regenta de Asturias? ¿La Bárbara venezolana? Quizás la Porcia de Venecia o la Ofelia de Dinamarca...” Serrano sabe conectar sus temas con los de los grandes autores de la literatura universal - Miguel de Cervantes, Shakespeare, Rómulo Gallegos, Mario Vargas Llosa, Gabriel García Márquez, y Clarín.

En El Testigo, habla el perro, irónicamente un perro para ciegos, quien nos cuenta lo que vio y lo que verdaderamente pasó cuando el “Bellaco” ahogó a su esposa, la “Bella.” La protagonista Belén de Sobre la vulcanizadora sufre de soledad, la soledad que describe la autora antes en Charquito de agua turbia: “No se trataba de aquélla, la soledad natural, sino de la otra, la segunda soledad, la que duele.”

Con Mink, Serrano vuelve a Chile describiendo el papel de muchas: “Mi vida era rápida, voraz y vertiginosa, calcada a la vida de tantas mujeres santiaguinas, todas exhaustas, tratando de cubrir cada uno de los frentes y hacerlo lo mejor posible.”

Si no fuera por el último cuento, el ya mencionado 2 de julio, uno pensaría que el mensaje principal de esta antología sería perfilar el papel de subyugación que las mujeres están forzadas a desempeñar en muchas sociedades. Pero con el 2 de julio vemos que Serrano escribe sobre la condición humana en la cual a veces todos estamos forzados a desempeñar papeles que menosprecian nuestros verdaderos ideales y frustran nuestras más nobles ambiciones.

Serrano sabe manejar el idioma y las técnicas de la literatura, sobre todo el uso de símbolos para subrayar los temas, símbolos sacados de la vida diaria de sus personajes. Hay toques de humor por aquí y por allá pero no es un humor que alivie lo deprimente del mensaje sino que lo subraya. No me divertí mucho al leer estos cuentos, sino que me hicieron reflexionar.

Serrano ganó el Premio Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz para mujeres autores en 1994 por su novela Nosotros que nos queremos tanto. Un año después ganó el Premio Municipal de Literatura Santiago de Chile por Para que no me olvides, y fue finalista del Premio Planeta en 2001 por Lo que está en mi corazón.

El pasado 6 de mayo se celebró el evento Recordando y Regresando a Nuestras Raíces en el teatro de la Chestnut Accelerated School en Springfield. El evento comenzó con una serie de estampas y finalizó con un concierto que resaltaron la historia y tradición folclórica puertorriqueña.

El evento organizado por el Freddie Moreno Art Legacy Project es parte de la celebración del Mes de la Herencia Puertorriqueña.

El evento estuvo inspirado alrededor en la vida de la lider obrera de la Sol Latino May 2014 industria tabacalera en la región central de la isla, Juana Colón.

El programa comenzó con el reconocimiento a Annamarie Golden, José Irizarry y Aurie Irizarry por su labor comunitaria. Luego siguió una lectura sobre la vida de Juana Colón. Posteriormente se presentaron dos sketches

humorísticos que resaltaron la historia folclórica de Puerto Rico - Los Pregones y los Recuerdos de Abuelita.

El concierto estuvo a cargo del grupo Los Pleneros del Coco bajo la dirección del santurcino de Tras Talleres y el reconocido músico, Miguel Almestica. Miguel fue el fundador de Los Pleneros del Coco. Una de las canciones interpretadas por el fue sobre Juana Colón.

En el 1989, el entonces gobernador de Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, proclamó el 19 de noviembre como el “Puerto Rico’s Day in Massachusetts.”

Puerto Ricans Among Latinos at Highest Risk of Contracting HIV NEW YORK UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NURSING | September 11, 2014 Higher HIV risk behaviors and prevalence have been reported among Puerto Rican people who inject drugs (PRPWID) since early in the HIV epidemic. Now that HIV prevention and treatment advances have reduced HIV among PWID in the US, researchers from New York University’s Center for Drug Use and HIV Research (CDUHR) examined HIV-related data for PRPWID in Puerto Rico (PR) and Northeastern US (NE) to assess whether disparities among PRPWID continue.

The study, “Addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic among Puerto Rican people who inject drugs: the Need for a Multi-Region Approach,” published in the American Journal of Public Health (on-line ahead of print, September 11, 2014) described the epidemic and the availability of HIV prevention and treatment programs in areas with a high concentration of Puerto Ricans, in order to provide recommendations to reduce HIV in the population.

“We reviewed HIV-related data for PRPWID living in Puerto Rico and Northeastern US, which contains the highest concentration of Puerto Ricans out of any US region,” said Dr. Sherry Deren, senior research scientist at NYU College of Nursing, and director of CDUHR. “Injection drug use as a risk for HIV continues to be over-represented among Puerto Ricans. Lower availability of HIV prevention tools (syringe exchange and drug treatment) and ART treatment challenges, for PWID in PR, contribute to higher HIV risk and incidence for PRPWID in both locations.”

In 2010, the Northeast had the highest reported rates of new AIDS diagnoses, with Hispanics accounting for 27% of those diagnosed in the region. Furthermore, 48.7% of Hispanics in the US with a diagnosis of HIV were located in the Northeast. The Northeast also had more new infections attributed to injection drug use (15.8%) than other regions of the US (8.8%). As prevalent as this was in the Northeast, in 2010 the rate of HIV diagnoses attributed to injection drug use in Puerto Rico was over two times greater (20.4%) than in the rest of the US. Despite the fact Puerto Ricans comprise only 9% of the US Hispanic Population, nearly 23% of HIV cases among Hispanics are among those born in Puerto Rico; Researchers also noted that heterosexual HIV transmission has now surpassed injecting-related HIV transmission in Puerto Rico (40.7% vs. 20.4%).

“Controlling heterosexual transmission of HIV will require controlling HIV infection among people who inject drugs, as those who inject drugs and are sexually active will serve as a continuing reservoir for future heterosexual

transmission if injecting-related HIV transmission is not brought under control,” cautions Dr. Deren.

Syringe exchange and drug treatment programs are the two primary methods responsible for reducing the rate of infection among people who inject drugs. The efficacy of such programs in reducing HIV transmission is well established. The evidence indicates that these services are much less available in Puerto Rico. In a 2011 survey of syringe exchange programs in the Northeast and Puerto Rico, the researchers found that the annual budget for such programs in the Northeast averaged over $400K, more than five times the average budgets of those in Puerto Rico ($80K).

“The differences in the annual budgets have very important implications for reducing HIV transmission and other health problems among people who inject drugs,” said Dr. Deren. “Larger budgets for such programs allows for a greater number of syringes to be exchanged, and for programs to offer other services in addition to the exchange, such as HIV screenings.”

The researchers note that the continuing ban on the use of U.S. federal funds towards needle exchanges contributes to the inability to grow such public health programs in Puerto Rico to meet the public health need.

Additionally, while there are still gaps in drug treatment program availability across the US, Puerto Rico has been shown to have a narrower range of such services.

“In light of the lack of available resources in Puerto Rico, many individuals migrate to the North East seeking drug treatment,” Dr. Deren noted. “Many of those coming to the Northeast, however, do not become engaged in evidence-based drug treatment.”

The researchers recommend that these disparities, in addition to the many other challenges afflicting Puerto Rican people who inject drugs, be addressed by the development of a federally-supported Northeast/Puerto Rico collaborative initiative to facilitate and coordinate efforts throughout these regions. The researchers also emphasize the need for the development and implementation of culturally appropriate HIV prevention interventions.

promover las artes, las humanidades y la educación de los residentes jóvenes del área del North End de Springfield. Freddy visualizó un proyecto que ayudaría a mejorar la calidad de vida de los residentes de esta zona, los cuales en su mayoría son puertorriqueños.

Este proyecto es una iniciativa del North End Campus Coalition.

Aunque Freddy falleció inesperadamente en el 2006, desde entonces el legado y su misión han sido mantenidos vivos por María Pérez, viuda de Freddie.
