Exitoso Primer Encuentro de Pleneros Desde que comenzamos los Encuentros de Poetas en Salsarengue Restaurant en Holyoke en el verano del 2006, siempre tuve el deseo de crear un proyecto similar, pero de música puertoriqueña. Los años pasaron sin poder conceptualizar ese proyecto claramente, hasta ahora.

El mayor obstáculo era cómo organizar un evento que cumpliera con estos 3 requisitos: Primero, que fuera un evento que sirviera de encuentro o reunión cultural comunitaria donde no existiera una separación entre músicos profesionales, novatos y aficionados, y mucho menos entre los músicos y la audiencia.

Segundo, que el evento no fuera solamente un entretenimiento musical, si no también un vehículo cultural para preservar, transmitir y promover la música puertorriqueña.

Tercero, que fuera gratuito o muy accesible, de modo que todo el mundo pudiera participar.

Hace unos meses encontré la respuesta y el modo a seguir a lo que estaba buscando, el movimiento conocido como Los Plenazos Callejeros. Los mismos se han venido celebrando en Puerto Rico por muchos años. Estos

encuentros comunitarios reunían a músicos profesionales y aficionados para tocar, cantar y bailar plena, generalmente durante varias horas ininterrumpidas.

Este movimiento nació en el 2004 por iniciativa de varios músicos, particularmente Richard Martínez y Tito Matos, director de la agrupación Viento de Agua, en el área de Santurce.

El fenómeno se popularizó tanto que los plenazos comenzaron a viajar, primero a barrios de tradición plenera como San Antón en Ponce y Dulces Labios en Mayagüez, y luego a casi todos los pueblos de la Isla. En el 2005, se organizó oficialmente una ruta anual para la celebración de estos plenazos. Los Plenazos Callejeros visitaron mas de 30 municipios y celebraron 72 eventos en un período de 7 años.

El 22 de septiembre, en Salsarengue Restaurant en Holyoke, celebramos nuestro Primer Encuentro de Pleneros. Gracias a Papote Vélez, quien invitó a muchos de los pleneros de corazón. Gracias por su asistencia.

Nos veremos de nuevo el 13 de octubre a las 8 pm en Salsarengue Restaurant para el segundo plenazo. ¡Los esperamos!

Sila María Calderón habla de su trabajo filantrópico por MANUEL FRAU RAMOS

La ex gobernadora de Puerto Rico Sila María Calderón fue la oradora principal el pasado 18 de septiembre en el Hartford Hospital Education and Resource Center.

Sila María Calderón, la cual proviene de una exitosa carrera en el mundo de los negocios, se convirtió en el 2001 en la primera y única gobernadora electa del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico.

El evento, auspiciado por el Latino Endowment Fund of Harford Fundation for Public Giving, fue parte de una gira promocional de la ex gobernadora de su organización filantrópica el Centro para Puerto Rico y la Fundación Sila M. Calderón.

Previamente, había servido como alcalde de la ciudad capital, San Juan, entre 1997 y 2001 y había ocupados varias posiciones administrativas durante la gobernación de Rafael Hernández Colón, tales como su chief of staff y Secretaria de Estado.

La Fundación Sila M. Calderón y El Centro por Puerto Rico son organizaciones privada, sin fines de lucro y no partidistas, cuyo fin es llevar a cabo proyectos, programas y servicios con la misión de reducir la pobreza y la inequidad; promover el papel de la mujer en la sociedad, promover la revitalización urbana y reforzar los valores éticos y de responsabilidad social.

Una de las iniciativas mas destacadas durante su cuatrenio como gobernadora fue su iniciativa del Programa de Comunidades Especiales. La misión del programa era el de ofrecerle a más de un millón de residentes en 686 barrios pobres a través de la isla las herramientas y oportunidades necesarias para romper el ciclo de la pobreza.

La tasa de votación de los puertorriqueños en la isla es mucho mayor que la de sus compatriotas en los 50 estados— mas del 85% — pero cuando los puertorriqueños se mudan a este lado del charco, las tasa de participación electoral bajan aproximadamente 30-40%. Calderón admitió que le era difícil encontrar una explicación a este fenómeno.

Una de las iniciativas de Calderón durante su adminsitración fue la campaña “¡Que Nada Nos Detenga!” que buscó inscribir electores puertorriqueños y otros latinos en Estados Unidos.

El tema de la charla, titulada Hay Un Mañana: Strenghthening our Communities giró mayormente acerca del papel importante que tienen las colaboraciones de los sectores públicos y privados en el desarrollo comunitario.

Calderón añadió que este viaje también tuvo como propósito finalizar un acuerdo con Rutgers University para que ésta establezca un programa de maestría con una concentración en el desarrollo comunitario en Puerto Rico.

Gobernador Patrick Celebra Mes de La Hispanidad por MANUEL FRAU RAMOS El gobernador Deval Patrick proclamó el 15 septiembre 2012 hasta el 15 octubre 2012 como el Mes de la Herencia Hispana en Massachusetts.

Originalmente, se escogió esta fecha para la celebración ya que coincide con los días de independencia de Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, México y Chile. Actualmente, el Mes de la Herencia Hispana celebra a todos los paíases Latinoamericanos, el Cribe y España.

El Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana es una oportunidad para los estadounidenses reconocer las historias, las culturas y las contribuciones de los ciudadanos estadounidenses cuyos antepasados vinieron de países Latinoamericanos, el Caribe y España.

Como parte de esta celebración, el gobernador Deval Patrick, el vicegobernador Timothy Murray y algunos de los directores de las agencias y departamentos de su administración han venido participando en una serie de eventos a través del estado donde se destacan las contribuciones económicas y el rico patrimonio de la comunidad hispana de Massachusetts.

Cámara de Comercio Latina de Massachusetts en Holyoke y fue organizado por la Oficina del Gobernador en el oeste de Massachusetts.

Elizabeth Cardona, Directora de la Oficina del Gobernador en esta región, señaló la importancia que tiene ha tenido la Cámara de Comercio Latina en la promoción y a la a los negocios Latinos a través del estado.

El gobernador agradeció a los comerciantes y residentes latinos por su contribución económica y cultural al estado. “Nuestros pequeños negocios alimentan nuestra economía y estoy encantado de que podamos celebrar Foto MFR. Carlos González, Presidente / CEO de la Cámara de Comercio Latina de Massachusetts, resaltó la significativa contribución que están haciendo los comerciantes latinos al desarrollo económico de las ciudades y pueblos del estado. “Las pequeñas empresas latinas son un gran empleador de los residentes del centro urbano y se están convirtiendo en un cúmulo importante que necesita el apoyo continuo del gobierno.

Marcos Marrero, Director de la Oficina de Planificación y Desarrollo de Holyoke, le puso sazón a la actividad al recordar cómo su vida, desde su nacimiento en New York, su crianza en Puerto Rico y su regreso a Massachusetts, fueron moldeados por un ambiente social multicultural y bilingüe que fue la norma y no la excepción.

Latinos, los más Afectados por el Hambre y la Pobreza WASHINGTON, DC, 18 de septiembre de 2012 (PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE). Pan para el Mundo hoy publicó su análisis anual del hambre y la pobreza en la comunidad latina. El análisis muestra que las familias latinas son más propensas a padecer hambre y pobreza que cualquier otro grupo.

“Es inaceptable que uno de cada tres niños hispanos corra peligro de padecer hambre en la nación más rica del mundo,” dijo Ricardo Moreno, asociado nacional de relaciones latinas de Pan para el Mundo. “Las personas deben tomar conciencia de la necesidad urgente de acabar con el hambre en este país, sobre todo entre los hispanos, que ahora representan más del 16 por ciento de la población.”

El 34 por ciento de los hogares latinos con niños luchan por dar de comer a sus familias, según “El Hambre y la Pobreza en la Comunidad Latina”, en comparación con un 22 por ciento de los hogares norteamericanos con niños en general. Y

un preocupante 36 por ciento de los niños hispanos viven en la pobreza, en comparación con 25 por ciento de los niños norteamericanos en general.

Según un informe de la Casa Blanca, 3.7 millones de familias latinas, incluyendo 8 millones de niños, se benefician del EITC y del CTC.

Conozca a sus Candidatos / Know your Candidates Note: For this special edition focused on the November elections, El Sol Latino invited candidates for State Representative in the 5th Hampden District and the U.S. Senate to submit a brief political essay about their candidacy. We gave them the option to write their essay in either English or Spanish. Below are the essays of those canditates that answered our invitation.

LINDA VACON- What makes Linda Vacon the best candidate for the position of State Representative in the 5th Hampden District?

My motivation to run for State Representative arises from a desire to serve, by offering my skills, education and business experience to represent you, the citizens of Holyoke. The proud history, strong foundation and good people within our community, combine to inspire me to run as a common sense candidate.

So, what do I have to offer?

I offer a track record of successful business leadership with positive results and the addition of jobs, along with local political leadership as a City Councilor. Having this combination of experience makes me a strong candidate for this open seat in our State Legislature. As your local Councilor, I have taken on ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Linda Vacoon difficult issues such as, split tax rates, and reducing spending, when others shied away. I am known for doing my homework, expressing views clearly and proposing action. I will bring this same work ethic to the position of State Representative. While I watch the fiscal issues, I also look out for those who need a break. Most recently I sponsored an order to add a Veterans a tax work off program similar to the one we offer our elders.

As a Holyoke homeowner and property tax payer with my husband John, I have first-hand experience with the results of ever increasing government spending. It is time that the burden of unfunded mandates at the state level stop being placed on our hard working taxpayers of Holyoke. I will be a loud voice against regulations that translate into job killing mandates and will work to eliminate roadblocks for people who want to start a business.

At the local level, and as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, I have been a consistent voice for policies that encourage business people to invest in Holyoke, from reasonable tax rates, to extended tax breaks for significant investment. As a representative at the state level, I will pursue opportunities to promote Holyoke as a community for business development and will work to reduce unnecessary regulations and the “red tape” that stifle economic growth.

It is my goal to be known as the State Rep who helped add the most jobs in Holyoke in recent times.

I believe that one person can make a difference and I love a challenge. My combination of education, successful business experience and public service, along with a willingness to speak on challenging issues, combine to uniquely qualify me to serve as State Representative. AARON VEGA - What makes Aaron Vega the best candidate for the position of State Representative in the 5th Hampden District?

On November 6, Holyoke has the opportunity to elect their next state representative and I believe I am the best candidate for that position. As one of Holyoke’s at-large councilors for the past two terms, I have worked diligently on public safety issues, business development, public engagement and have been a strong voice of smart spending measures.

In addition to my work on city council, I was a member of the Morgan School turnaround team that designed a plan that was accepted by the state to improve the education of our children. Additionally, I was asked to join the Dean Technical High School Futures Team to be sure that school provides the opportunities needed for our youth.

I also sit on the Connections After School Program Advisory Board, ensuring quality after school programs for all of our children. For me, education is priority one. Making sure we receive the needed funds and support for our schools from the state will be one of my most important duties.

As chair of the redevelopment subcommittee, I have worked closely with city planners and leaders, engineers, the building department, and the public to make Holyoke a business-friendly city. It will be my job to market our city on the state level to attract large and small companies as well as make sure that entrepreneurs have the tools they need to open their companies here in Holyoke. As a small business owner myself, I understand the difficulties in running a business, but I also understand the great potential Holyoke has to attract companies and jobs.

As a member of the South Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative, I have had the privilege to work closely with local and state law enforcement agencies alongside local service providers. I have worked with our chief of police to bring back community policing in our neighborhoods and I have worked on clean and safe streets ordinances that improve the quality of life for all residents.

I believe I bring the energy, fresh ideas and willingness to work hard for all of Holyoke at the state level. For me, this election is not about old Holyoke or new Holyoke. It’s not about just Ward 1 or just ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Aaron Vega Ward 7—it’s about One Holyoke. A Holyoke that is a great city to live, work, play and raise a family in.

invertir en nuestro futuro.

Es por eso que apoyo la Ley de los sueños cumplidos (lo que en inglés llaman el DREAM Act) y también apoyo los esfuerzos del presidente Obama de ayudar a los jóvenes que llevan años residiendo en Estados Unidos para que ellos también puedan aspirar a hacer realidad el sueño americano. Y lo triste es que a pesar de que es un proyecto de ley imparcial y bipartidista, Scott Brown se ha opuesto al DREAM Act. En esta elección, cada uno de nosotros va a decidir con quién está y sobre qué tipo de futuro vamos a construir. Soy candidata para el Senado porque sé que necesitamos tratarnos de tú a tú y tenemos que invertir en nuestro futuro.

Eso significa invertir en educación, para que todos nuestros niños puedan surgir y progresar. Y significa crear iniciativas que generen empleo y fortalezcan nuestra infraestructura, para que nuestras empresas puedan crecer y tener éxito.

Es con gran satisfacción que yo me pongo del lado de las familias trabajadoras y del presidente Obama, y lucharé con todo a nombre de los hombres y las mujeres trabajadores de Massachusetts.

Estamos unidos en esta gran batalla y para mí será un honor contar con el voto suyo el 6 de noviembre.

More than 20 tenants from the nearby public housing project, along with their allies, had gathered here to celebrate an important victory after a summer-long fight against the Holyoke Housing Authority (HHA). The HHA has put forward plans to demolish Lyman Terrace and sell the land off to private developers. While the agency has yet to withdraw this plan, Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse rescinded his support for demolition in response to tenant pressure.

This is a major victory for over 400 residents, the majority of them Latino, who call this project home. For them, the thought of future eviction and the uncertain housing prospects that follow never strayed far from their minds.

Miguel Nieves is one of the tenants fighting to save Lyman Terrace. His story resembles that of many neighbors.

Two years ago, as the jobs crisis deepened, Miguel was laid off from Berry Plastics, where he worked as a printing technician. He got a job at McDonald’s, but soon his hours were cut. Squeezed for rent, he and his wife Yaritza applied for public housing and came to live in Lyman, along with their two young sons. As Miguel explained: Public housing is key for so many low-income people. A lot of workers, like myself, lost our jobs after the economy crashed. I know many others who can’t find steady work because they have bad records. We already struggle to survive in this world--prices on everything go up, and minimum wage stays the same.

Public housing is a benefit that gives us a chance to move upward. With the HHA trying to tear Lyman Terrace down, I could lose this chance.

We definitely need another system--not one that pushes the poor down and the rich up.”

Local activist James F.V. Bickford pointed out that tenants are facing eviction and demolition at exactly the time people need assistance the most.

As Bickford said: The fifth-oldest public housing project in the U.S., made up of 167 homes, is about to be demolished to make way for private development.

Disabled, unemployed, working poor and their families, many elderly and children, are to be evicted while nearly 1,300 other families in the state are currently living in hotels and shelters.

WITH ATTACKS on public services intensifying, it’s all the more impressive to see a victory for the tenants. They shoed that governments will pull public services off the chopping block when faced by strong community resistance.

This is a lesson being learned countrywide. Earlier in August, more than 200 residents from the Chicago area held a meeting to protest similar demolition plans by the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA). The CHA’s “Plans for Transformation” are essentially a scheme to tear down the city’s traditional housing projects and replace them with “mixed-income” developments. Earlier this summer, Holyoke’s Mayor Morse likewise supported a “mixed-income replacement to Lyman Terrace.”

But as in Chicago, Holyoke residents came to see their community’s future as tied to their ability to unite, organize and resist. A month ago, Miguel and fellow tenants came together to form a Residents Council. They created by-laws, elected tenant leaders and began holding regular meetings.

In this way, tenants voted and set the direction of their fight against demolition. This shows the great promise of the council as a base from which to launch activism and a place where tenants can collectively assess and plan their defense against the HHA. Forming the council also gave the tenants more control over their movement.

Outside organizations and community allies looking to help now do so through presenting their ideas to the council, where they are discussed and voted on.

Tenants also held two important protests this summer. While small in numbers--each were around 20 people--the demonstrations gained valuable attention and helped shift public debate in favor of tenants.

The first protest was held at the Puerto Rican Day parade on July 15. Tenants and allies chanted at marching politicians and raised signs that read, “HHA is a slumlord!” The second protest took place at the annual Holyoke Latino/a Chamber of Commerce (HLCC) picnic on August 15, where tenants sought to push the HLCC, which had remained silent on the issue, into publicly opposing demolition.

Some community voices outside the tenants, including those who were anti-demolition, opposed this second action, fearing it would alienate potential allies. However, the tenants proved correct in their strategy.

At the picnic, Resident Council President Sonia Gonzalez solicited from the HLCC a public letter opposing demolition. Tenants called out local politicians as they walked into the picnic and used the day for informational picketing with flyers and petitions. Although protesters were originally kicked out of the park where the picnic took place, they reentered in pairs, handed out leaflets and encouraged people to join them on the sidewalk where others had relocated.

The tenants’ ability to confront the arguments of city politicians and the HHA with a united voice undoubtedly swayed Morse to think twice about positioning himself against Lyman Terrace.

8 Opinión / Opinion Organizing works in Holyoke continued from page 7 Before the tenants organized opposition to the demolition, the city and the HHA were able to frame public debate. For example, earlier this summer, Morse wrote in a public letter that he supported demolition because he believed in “rejecting housing systems that, by design, keep generations of families in one place, and in poverty.” Morse was essentially using the old “poverty breeds poverty” argument to justify demolition and gentrification. This, of course, ignores the true factors leading to poverty and unequal housing, like unemployment, racism and limited access to public services.

It’s important to remember that Morse didn’t break from his stance out of benevolence, but did so only when faced by a strengthening Residents Council, protests and also anti-discrimination lawsuits filed on behalf of six tenants. Thus, his tune changed, Morse wrote in a more recent letter: The shortcomings of this process have awoken genuine concern, fear and resentment among many in the community. Considering the longstanding neglect of Lyman Terrace at the local level, such reactions are perfectly understandable. Furthermore, equating urban renewal with urban removal has been a widely

practiced strategy across our country; and, as such, skepticism of our own project is warranted.

HEARING MORSE admit fault in the “process” and shifting his support away from demolition is a great relief to tenants and a testament to their hard work and resistance. But while celebrating this important victory, we shouldn’t view it as the end of fight.

Although Morse has changed his stance, the HHA has yet to withdraw its plans for demolition.

Furthermore, for decades, the HHA has neglected the conditions of Lyman Terrace, and it continues to do so. As property managers, the HHA is responsible for following through on necessary repairs and renovations. It is unlikely that demolition will be stopped or housing conditions improved without continued community pressure.

As tenant Marcella Jayne put it: Yes, I was ecstatic to read Morse’s recent letter, recanting his previous position, but this does not connote an “end-all” victory to me, and let’s remember election time is coming up. If we can all agree that our collective efforts helped push the mayor to change his stance, then it is reasonable to assume that he wouldn’t have come to the conclusions outlined in his letter on his own.

My message to tenants and allies is not to commence “knee-jerk” praise of the mayor for doing what he should have done, but rather to acknowledge it for what is was--a step in the right direction.

As James Bickford said, Lyman Terrace is the fifth-oldest public housing project in the U.S. today. It was built in 1939 as part of the New Deal under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Strangely, Morse invoked this historical significance in his previous letter arguing for demolishing the project.

“Roosevelt’s commitment, though, was not to one piece of property, but to the spirit of progress and justice,” Morse wrote. “His task, first and foremost, was to meet the challenges of his time.”

Well, the commitment of tenants today is to one piece of property. Having a decent roof to sleep under is not a luxury, but a basic need, no different than needing water to drink or food to eat. Access to housing should be a right without question, especially in today’s society of unprecedented abundance where over 18 million U.S. homes remain vacant. The tenants of Lyman Terrace have brought this struggle into the spotlight in Holyoke, and their victory this month is a testament to their resistance and solidarity. ¡Que viva Lyman Terrace!

Y muchos que no son latinos apenas se dan cuenta. Y si se dan cuenta, muchos se preguntan por qué se Yvette Donato. Crédito observa el mes de la Educational Testing Service herencia hispana. A continuación, mi perspectiva.

Claro está, debemos celebrar nuestros aportes a la creación de nuestra nación, su independencia, crecimiento y defensa; y nuestra creciente influencia en la política, la moda, la cocina, la música, las artes … y mucho más.

Durante más de una década, el Educational Testing Service (ETS) ha hecho precisamente eso. Cada año, invitamos a un líder hispano a compartir sus puntos de vista sobre la educación durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Nos encanta escucharlos y aprender de ellos. ¿Por qué lo hacemos? Porque tenemos mucho que aprender y compartir. Por ejemplo, puede que nuestros conferencistas invitados no estén plenamente informados de lo que ETS hace respecto a la investigación y análisis de política educativa, tal como nuestra serie de simposios e informes sobre la brecha en el rendimiento escolar.

Eso es—brechas educativas. Nuestras y otras

investigaciones indican regularmente que los hispanos estamos rezagados en tantas áreas.

Esas realidades no las podemos celebrar. No obstante, podemos y debemos dedicar más atención a la educación durante este mes de reflexión y celebración. Por lo tanto: Reflexionemos sobre cómo bajar la tasa de deserción escolar; cómo incrementar el número de presidentes hispanos en universidades (actualmente menos del 4 por ciento, y de éstos la mitad son de universidades comunitarias); el hecho de que los varones latinos son superados por las latinas en la matrícula y la obtención de diplomas de educación terciaria; y cómo contrarrestar la calamidad de escuelas inadecuadas (donde estudia la mayoría de nuestros colegiales) con maestros e instalaciones inadecuadas (y ¡todavía hay quienes que se preguntan por qué los chicos quedan rezagados!).

Celebremos que el Gran Mariscal del Desfile Nacional Puertorriqueño de 2012 fue el Dr. Félix Matos Rodríguez, presidente de Hostos Community College en el Bronx. Hostos, en donde los latinos son un 60 por ciento del alumnado, ha incrementado la retención, el porcentaje que se gradúan y los que continúan sus estudios en universidades de cuatro años, y el rendimiento académico en general. Eso sí es digno de celebrar—y de imitar.

Reflexionemos sobre cómo crear una cultura “destino universitario” en la familia latina; cómo

ayudar a los padres que trabajan tan duro a enseñar a sus hijos que las pruebas no son barreras sino un sendero que conduce al éxito de sus hijos; cómo las pruebas señalan lo que los alumnos sí pueden hacer y no solamente lo que no pueden hacer; y ¿cómo instar a los padres a apagar el televisor y leer más con sus hijos?

Celebremos primero a todos los modelos a seguir del mañana—los latinos que son educadores, científicos, astronautas, académicos y empresarios—además de las celebridades y atletas. Pues, tanto los líderes famosos como los no tan famosos juegan papeles importantes en la inspiración de nuestros jóvenes.

Finalmente, ¡actuemos! Al mismo tiempo que es importante que los hispanos y los otros estadounidenses reflexionen y celebren durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, es aún más importante que actuemos para incrementar el rendimiento educativo de la población de mayor crecimiento en nuestra nación.

Los latinos están destinados a contribuir incalculablemente a la mayor productividad y competitividad global continua. Si defraudamos a nuestros jóvenes latinos, en última instancia defraudamos a nuestra nación. ¿Debiéramos reflexionar? ¡Sí! ¿Debiéramos celebrar? ¡Sí! ¿Debiéramos actuar? ¡Sí! ¡Sí! ¡Sí!

Holyoke Agreement between Elms College and HCC HOLYOKE. A new agreement between Holyoke Community College and Elms College will increase the transfer options available to students studying criminal justice at HCC. HCC President William Messner, Elms College President Mary Reap, and other administrators from both schools signed an articulation agreement on Wednesday, Sept. 13, that spells out the details of two new transfer options. Students at HCC who graduate with an associate degree in criminal justice will now be accepted at Elms on a track to receive either a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice or a bachelor of arts degree in legal studies.

HCC has articulation agreements for transfer with about 30 private and public schools, including several for criminal justice majors with Westfield State University, American International College and Western New England University. Articulation agreements spell out exactly what courses at HCC will be accepted for credit at the four-year schools.

Roberto Ampuero • New York: Riverhead Books, 2012. 352 pages The Neruda Case byTranslation

by Carolina de Robertis There are so many references to real people, real geographical settings, and real historical events in Chilean author Roberto Ampuero’s fictional novel, The Neruda Case, that a reader might be forgiven if he believes that the protagonist detective Cayetano Brulé and his search for the Bracamonte family on behalf of the revered poet Pablo Neruda are also real.

But they are not.

And this is what the reader must constantly remind himself because the backdrop of the story and the historical settings are real and therefore the entire novel takes on such verisimilitude that a graduate student working on a thesis about Nobel prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda might be tempted to read into the lines of his love poetry references to the elusive (but fictional) Beatriz, wife of Ángel Bracamonte.

The novel begins during the turbulent years of socialist Salvador Allende’s presidency (1970-1973), “when people talked...only about the seizure of power, the proletarian dictatorship, and the Chilean road to socialism, vertiginous days in which everybody quoted Lenin, Trotsky, Althusser, or Marta Harnecker’s manuals on historical and dialectical materialism.”

Allende intended to enact sweeping economic and social reforms, including widespread land redistribution, through legal measures. These policies were met with vehement opposition by the landed wealthy.

Brulé, a Cuban who followed his love for María Paz to her native Chile, is dismayed when his wife declares that she is going to Punto Cero, “the military base where the Cuban government trained guerrilla fighters from all over the world.” She wants to be ready to participate in an armed defense of Allende’s government. She claims that, “This government is going to be overthrown if we don’t defend it with weapons. The right is conspiring with (U.S, president Richard) Nixon and the military.” As he kissed María Paz goodbye before she set off to become an armed revolutionary for the common people, Brulé “recognized the Coco Chanel she always wore. She was the same bourgeois girl as always.”

When Brulé is summoned to the home of the elderly and ailing Pablo Neruda and given the task of finding Dr. Ángel Bracamonte, last known to be practicing medicine in México, he decides “Why not.” He can tell his wife he “was off to fulfill a secret mission, which she would love, since she adores revolutionary political conspiracies.” The detective is shocked upon meeting the revered poet: “It was hard to accept that this old sallowcheeked man had been that youth who used to hold orgies on the beach...”

Brulé is not told the reason for his search for Bracamonte, only that it was for a private, personal reason.

Cayetano’s search takes him to Mexico, Cuba, Germany, Bolivia and back to Chile, and through the various stages of Neruda’s life and loves. Along the way, Brulé discovers that Neruda isn’t really interested in locating Ángel Bracamonte, but rather the doctor’s wife Beatriz, or more specifically the child Tina that he believes he may have fathered with Beatriz. New at detective work, Cayetano patterns himself after Jules Maigret, a fictional Parisian police commissioner invented by the writer Georges Simenon.

The novel is divided into five parts, each named after the true chronological loves and marriages of Pablo Neruda: Josie, “a woman who was half British and half Javanese ...who tried to stab him;” Maria Antonieta, a Dutch woman and the mother of Malva Marina Trinidad, the hydrocephalic daughter of Neruda, both of whom the poet abandoned in Nazi-occupied Holland; Delia del Carril, an Argentinian who got Neruda’s Canto General published secretly in Chile and who helped the poet “give refuge in Chile to thousands of Republican Spaniards fleeing the Civil War;” Matilde, “succulent and desirable,” “a young cabaret singer with an amazing body, a woman who’s an intellectual dwarf compared to Delia;” and Trinidad, because “Now that the years have caught up to Matilde and she’s not the woman she used to be, [Neruda]’s sleeping with her niece.”

The five parts also mark the distinct eras in which the poet served as Chilean consul in various parts of the world and each of the five contains a section in italics which are the imagined first person reflections of Neruda about the woman that dominated that specific period of his life.

Ampuero has a rather sardonic sense of humor poking fun at political fanaticism. “Under capitalism,” he writes, “artists could say anything they wanted, because very few people listened.” In Cuba, one of those who may know something of Beatriz’s whereabouts, comments, “A Cuban woman, married to a Cuban doctor--there are thousands of those. That’s why we revolutionized our health system, so we could have doctors doing everything, even driving tractors...” National traits are also mocked: “If in Mexico all men sported mustaches, in Chile all the revolutionaries grew beards, while the enemies of Allende’s government had well-shaven cheeks and hair slicked back with gel.” Cultural traits, too, are objects of Ampuero’s humor: “In Mexico...a yes often meant no, and a no often meant depends.” Chileans “were silent people, mild-mannered, the opposite of Cubans, with their constant boisterous self-expression.”

The author also points out the ironic inconsistency between Neruda’s political beliefs and the way he lived his life: “Although Don Pablo was a disciplined member of Chile’s Communist Party, he lived like a true bourgeois: he owned two more houses.”

DeRobertis’s translation captures Ampuero’s rich and sensuous prose. In Rangoon, Neruda tells Cayetano, it’s “humid, hot...The air is so thick it won’t fit in your mouth.” By contrast, Ampuero later describes the difficulty of breathing in the rarefied atmosphere of La Paz, Bolivia: “Air, thin as a strand of the cotton candy sold near the school during his childhood, barely entered his throat.” In Cuba, “Steam rose from the tar on the street, making the neighborhood oscillate like a mirage.”

However, and perhaps in an attempt to translate faithfully the author’s words, there are some occasional awkward sentences, some with a lack of parallel structure, or with dangling participial constructions, ambiguous antecedents or misplaced modifiers. Such errors point to the challenge of translation: whether or not to respect the conventions of the native language of the author at the expense of violating those of the language in translation. A personal aside: having taught Neruda’s poetry for many years without knowing much of the poet’s private life, I found the account of his many love affairs somewhat shocking. Brulé expresses it this way: “He escaped from Josie Bliss; he abandoned María Antonieta and his daughter; he threw Delia away like a rag. Now that the years have caught up to Matilde, and she’s not the woman she used to be, he’s sleeping with her niece.” I remind myself that this is, after all, a fictionalized version of Neruda’s life and, as such, accept Ampuero’s imagined remorse on behalf of Neruda: “I ask the victims of my happiness for forgiveness...all the women who were shipwrecked in an ocean of hopes nourished by my verses.”

El video de la sesión de grabación de la canción “For Once in My Life” se estrenó en Vevo en New York el 26 de septiembre. La canción “For Once In My Life” es el primer sencillo de “TONY BENNETT: VIVA DUETS” que se estrenará en todo el mundo el 22 de octubre.

La adición más reciente a la serie de duetos multiplatinos de Bennett muestran al legendario vocalista al lado de destacados artistas latinos tales como Marc Anthony, Christina Aguilera, Ricardo Arjona, Chayanne, Gloria Estefan, Vicente Fernández, Juan Luis Guerra, Romeo Santos, Thalía, Vicentico y más.

El Festival del Barrio dedicado a Jenny González por MANUEL FRAU RAMOS La decimosexta edición del Festival del Barrio de Springfield realizado el pasado 22 de septiembre en el Calhoun Park de la ciudad de Springfield fue dedicada a la memoria de Jenny González, quien murió el pasado marzo.

Jenny González, conocida activista comunitaria en la sección del North End, llegó a Springfield a principios de los noventa. Rápidamente se destacó por su activismo político y cultural. Sus acciones sobresalieron mas que sus palabras.

Trabajó en campañas en contra de la violencia, y en la promoción de actividades y eventos para la niñez. Fue presidenta de la Liga de Béisbol Juvenil Orlando Cepeda y ayudó a fundar o formó parte de organizaciones tales como Puertorriqueños al Rescate de Nuestra Cultura y Mujeres a la Vanguardia.

Muchos la recuerdan por sus activismo político. Como miembro de Mujeres a la Vanguardia participó en campañas de inscripción de votantes lo cual contribuyó

a la elección de Zaida Luna como la primera concejal de origen Hispano en ocupar una silla en la ciudad de Springfield.

El Festival del Barrio, cuya misión ha sido el de ofrecer unas actividades culturales gratuitas para toda la familia, es el producto de la visión de la activista María Pérez y su esposo, el reconocido líder comunitario y músico, Wilfredo “Freddy” Moreno, quien falleció inesperadamente en el 2006.

Al igual que el año pasado, El 16º Festival del Barrio fue organizado por el grupo Mujeres a la Vanguardia con la colaboración y valioso apoyo de Eric Maldonado y NightsTV.com.

Rosa Ibarra en el Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts Con motivo de la celebración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana, el Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts de Springfield montó una exibición de la artista puertorriqueña Rosa Ibarra.

Piensa que es importante que la incoporación de estos elementos no opaquen la esencia de la figura – por el contrario- deben complementarla.

La exhibición estará abierta hasta mediados de octubre.

La exibición Sisterhood: Mixed Media Paintings by Rosa Ibarra abrió el 14 de septiembre con un evento social y cultural en la sala principal del Museo ante una gran asistencia.

Esta exhibición fue posible gracias a una colaboración entre el Museo y el WGBY Public Television’s Latino Advisory Board. Vanessa Pabón, directora de enlace comunitario de WGBY, junto a Ashley Pereira, asistente de desarrollo del Museo, trabajaron para hacer posible el evento. Esta colaboración es un nuevo esfuerzo que tiene la intención de atraer a la gran comunidad Latina a los museos de Springfield y a sus ofrecimientos.

Rosa Ibarra nació en Puerto Rico. Pasó su niñez en el Viejo San Juan y cursó estudios de escuela superior en Paris.

Comenzó su carrera artistica bajo la tutela de su padre, el internacionalmente reconocido pintor Alfonso Arana.

Ibarra estudió arte en la University de Massachusetts y realizó esdudios graduados en Francia.

Sus pinturas se han exhibido en numerosas galerías a través de los Estados Unidos y del mundo esntero, y su trabajos se utilizan en libros escolares de texto.

Una de los temas mas sobresalientes en las pinturas de Rosa Ibarra es la mujer. En esta exhibición, muchos de los cuadros tocan este tema – madres, hermanas, hijas.

De acuerdo a sus propias palabras, Ibarra utliza óleos en diferentes capas para transmitir la vibración de la luz y crear texturas complejas y tridimensionales. Muchas veces pienso que estoy esculpiendo el canvas.

Entre las cosas que influencian su selección de materiales se encuentran aquellas que llaman su atención y tocan su espíritu, tales como el cristal de las playas del Viejo San Juan, cuentas (beads) de Africa y concha de abulón (abalone shell) del estudio de su amigo luthier. Las alternativas son ilimitadas.

Media Fuels Latino and Immigrant Negative Stereotypes WASHINGTON, DC. [CapitalWirePR]. September 13, 2012. The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) released a national poll showing that media portrayals of Latinos and immigrants are fueling rampant negative stereotypes among the general population that are diminishing perceptions of these groups throughout the United States.

NHMC will filed letters with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), sharing this new poll data and renewing unanswered requests that NHMC made back in 2009 for the agencies to study the impacts of hate speech in media.

At a press conference in Washington, D.C., Alex Nogales, President and CEO of NHMC, presented the poll findings alongside Congressman Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ) and fellow civil rights activists from the NAACP, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA).

“Today we stand together with our allies from the African American and LGBT communities against hate speech in media, and to advocate for more positive portrayals of people of color and LGBT people in media,” Nogales said. “We unite behind this issue as this new poll data shows the propensity of media images – negative or positive – to impact people’s opinions about our communities.”

NHMC, through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, commissioned the highly respected polling firm, Latino Decisions, to conduct the research. The two-part poll included a national phone survey with a sample size of 900 non-Latino respondents and an interactive online experiment of

3,000 non-Latino respondents.

During the phone survey, respondents were asked a series of more than ninety questions about their news and entertainment habits and their opinions about Latinos and immigrants. For the online portion, respondents were exposed to positive and negative short video clips, print articles, and audio clips. Immediately after exposure to the stimuli, respondents were asked their opinions about Latinos and immigrants.

For instance, after viewing just one minute of media content, poll respondents changed the way they view Latinos. When asked if Latinos were intelligent, those who consumed negative news and entertainment pieces were much more likely to rate Latinos as unintelligent, while those who consumed positive pieces were much more likely to rate Latinos as intelligent.

Moreover, Nogales called it “disturbing” that the poll found there is a common misperception that Latinos and undocumented immigrants are one in the same, with 17% of survey respondents actually believing that the majority of U.S. Latinos are undocumented.

“The media is doing a disservice with coverage that is misleading the public about Latinos who live in the U.S. It is producing attitudes among non-Latinos that contribute to hate speech and hate crimes. We must demand that the media do a better job with its coverage.”

The poll also found that: • People exposed to negative entertainment or news narratives about Latinos and/or immigrants hold the most unfavorable and hostile views about both groups.

• Negative portrayals of Latinos and immigrants are

pervasive in news and entertainment media.

Consequently, non-Latinos commonly believe that many media-promoted negative stereotypes about these groups are true.

• Conservative talk radio and Fox News audiences are less likely to be personally familiar with Latinos yet more likely to hold anti-immigrant and antiLatino views. Without direct experience with Latinos, media takes on a larger role in establishing these opinions and attitudes.

• Even those most disposed to positive opinions about Latinos have less favorable opinions when exposed to negative entertainment or news narratives.

• In discussing those in this country without documentation, the term commonly employed by some media outlets, “illegal aliens,” elicits much more negatives feelings than the term “undocumented immigrants.”

• Non-Latinos report seeing Latinos in stereotypically negative or subordinate roles (gardeners, maids, dropouts, and criminals) in television and film.

Furthermore, the poll found that the general public relies heavily on television for news and information, with 66 percent watching major network and cable newscasts and only 30 percent trusting Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks or online-only news sources.
