En un hecho sin precedentes en la comunidad hispana de Ohio, una imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe publicada por el periódico El Sol de Ohio en su página de Facebook alcanzó más de 72 mil “like” o “me gusta” en cinco días, del 8 al 13 de enero . Se espera que en los próximos días el número supere los 80 mil “me gusta” Según el reporte de la Oficina del Censo en el año 2010 los hispanos en Ohio eran 354 mil 674 y en junio del año 2014 esa misma oficina reportó un aumento en la población hispana de un 9 por ciento, equivalente a unos 33 mil hispanos más, para una población total en Ohio de unos 388 mil hispanos.

“Es la primera vez que se observa un fenómeno similar en las redes sociales de la comunidad hispana de Ohio, no hay ningún personaje ni político ni artístico n i deportista que haya alcanzado una cifra similar de simpatía en nuestra comunidad en tan pocos días”, expresó Wilson Hernández, Publisher y editor del periódico hispano líder en Columbus, capital de Ohio.

The phenomenon occurred after El Sol de Ohio had an intense message confrontation with an Evangelical pastor that insulted the devotees of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

n Fiscal Year 2015, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) arrested 1,437 individuals for human trafficking – the illegal trade and exploitation of people for commercial gain, most commonly in the form of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation. From those cases, nearly 400 trafficking victims were identified and offered critical services.

This year marks the sixth anniversary of President Barack Obama’s proclamation of January as National Slavery and Trafficking Prevention month. ICE participates in a variety of human trafficking awareness events in January and throughout the year.

While human trafficking can occur in a variety of scenarios and industries, indicators of traffickingactivities often look the same across cases. Educating the public to recognize the signs is crucial to identifying victims and bringing traffickers to justice.

Examples of HSI human trafficking cases in 2015 include: Multistate Sex Trafficking – In October 2015, HSI arrested 29 people in eight states for sex trafficking more than 13 Hispanic women and girls from Mexico and Central America through a system of brothels across the southeastern United States. Now with 41 indictments, this case has the highest number of indictments of any HSI human trafficking investigation. The 15-month investigation was a success because of the combined support from DHS Joint Task Force – Investigations, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations,

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Federal Emergency Management Administration and multiple state/local law enforcement agencies.

Domestic servitude – A military official from Qatar and his wife brought two domestic servants with them to San Antonio, Texas. The couple allegedly housed the workers in primitive conditions, threatened them with arrest and jail, withheld their wages, and deprived them of cell phones, passports, visas and food. HSI made the arrest on forced labor charges on May 30, 2015.

no Ramirez-Granados was arrested March 31, 2015, in Tenancingo, Mexico through a joint investigation by HSI Mexico City, HSI New York and the Mexican Federal Police. The Granados family and its associates would romance young women before coercing them into prostitution in Mexico, smuggling them into the United States, and then continuing the control, physical and sexual abuse, and threats in New York City. HSI identified 26 victims and 19 other traffickers and smugglers.

glesias a lo largo y ancho de Estados Unidos se preparan para ofrecer refugio a inmigrantes centroamericanos en riesgo de ser detenidos y deportados por el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS).

Esto luego que el DHS confirmó que comenzará redadas para detener y deportar a los adultos y a sus hijos que fueron detenidos después del 1 de mayo 2014, cuando cruzaban la frontera sur de manera ilegal, durante la oleada migratoria de ese año.

Docenas de congregaciones contemplan ofrecer santuario a centroamericanos que enfrentan la deportación, dijo el reverendo Noel Andersen, coordinador nacional de “Church World Service”, una coalición de iglesias cristianas que ofrece asilo a personas necesitadas.

“Vemos un verdadero frente unido en la comunidad de fe de que estas re-

dadas son inmorales, que no debemos victimizar a personas que han huido de la violencia, que serán regresadas de nuevo a tal vez una situación de violencia que podría ser fatal”, expresó Andersen.

Ken Heintzelman, pastor principal de la iglesia “Shadow Rock United Church of Christ”, en Phoenix, informó que su congregación considera abrir sus puertas para ofrecer refugio a las familias centroamericanas que

enfrentan la deportación.

Dicha iglesia ya ha servido de santuario a otros inmigrantes, como el guatemalteco Eleazar Misheal Pérez Cabrera, quien se refugió en el templo en noviembre de 2014, un día antes de que fuera emitida una orden de deportación.

Pérez Cabrera vivió dentro de la iglesia durante 110 días, hasta que se le concedió un aplazamiento de un año lo que le permite permanecer en el país bajo la supervisión de la

Oficina de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE).

Heintzelman dijo que su congregación cree que tiene la obligación moral de proteger a los centroamericanos que huyen de la violencia.

Proveer refugio a los inmigrantes centroamericanos reviviría el denominado Movimiento Santuario de la década de los 80, en el que iglesias de Arizona y otras partes del país acogieron a cientos de migrantes.

Las Iglesias ofrecen asilo al hacer valer la política del ICE de no ingresar a “escuelas, hospitales e iglesias”, para detener a inmigrantes indocumentados.

Dichas instalaciones son consideradas por el ICE como “zonas sensibles” en las que tiene prohibido a sus agentes ingresar a realizar aprehensiones.

Sin embargo, técnicamente no existe protección legal para los migrantes que se refugian en las Iglesias, y los templos no están exentos de la ley federal.

n una operación coordinada entre el equipo Swat de la Policía de Columbus y detectives de la oficina del Sheriff Zach Scott, fue apresadoDa’Juan Mankins, señalado como el autor de la muerte a tiros de Glen Allen Stepp, de 47 años, el pasado 26 de Noviembre, en el West de Columbus.

Según la nota enviada por la oficina del Sheriff Zach Scott, Mankins fue capturado sin incidentes en una casa ubicada en la South Richardson Avenue. Ahora está detenido en la cárcel del condado de Franklin a espera de ser juzgado por el cargo de asesinato.

La nota indica que el pasado 26 de noviembre, aproximadamente a las 5 de la tarde, la Oficina del

Sheriff del Condado de Franklin respondió a una llamada del 911 sobre una persona baleada en un callejón próximo a la 29 Volney Avenue, en Franklin Township. La víctima fue identificada luego Glen Allen Stepp, quien recibió un disparo en la parte superior del cuerpo. Fue trasladado por los paramédicos al Monte Carmel Hospital West, y declarado muerto a las 17:38.

Los detectives del Sheriff descubrieron que Stepp se reunió un grupo de individuos en el callejón. Uno de los individuos blandíó una pistola y disparó al menos dos tiros en la parte superior del cuerpo del señor Stepp, huyendo de inmediato del lugar. Los detectives creen que el móvil de este homicidio pudo haber sido el robo.

According to the Census Bureau, there were 354,674 Hispanics in Ohio and in June 2014 there was a 9% increase in that number, equivalent to 33,000 more people, for a total population of 388,000 Hispanics.

Obviously, we need to add the number of Hispanics that were not counted – the “undocumented”, with which the Hispanic population in Ohio could reach some 500,000 inhabitants.

In this issue, El Sol de Ohio publishes the results of a massive and extraordinary response from the Ohio Hispanic community to an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe posted on its Facebook page. More than 72,000 Hispanics supported the message asking for protection for the Hispanics of Columbus from the raids and persecution from immigration authorities against “undocumented” Hispanics.

Without a doubt, Our Lady of Guadalupe is the best protector of Hispanics in this community, more so than demagogue politicians, because her presence has sparked a very large sentiment of trust and protection. She should also be the engine that transforms that sentiment into unity and solidarity among all Hispanics in our community. We pray to God and Our Lady that it will be so.

Obviamente a esta cifra hay que añadir los hispanos que no figuran en el censo, los “indocumentados”, con los cuales la población hispana en Ohio podría alcanzar unos 500 mil habitantes.

En la presente edición El Sol de Ohio publica los resultados de una masiva y extraordinaria respuesta de la comunidad hispana de Ohio a una imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe publicada en la página de Facebook de El Sol de Ohio. Más de 72 mil hispanos respondieron apoyando el mensaje publicado que pedía a la Virgen protegiera a los hispanos en Columbus de las redadas o persecuciones que realizan las autoridades de Inmigración (ICE) contra los hispanos “indocumentados”.

Sin dudas la Virgen de Guadalupe es la mejor protectora de los hispanos en esta comunidad, más que los políticos demagogos, pues su presencia ha provocado un multitudinario sentimiento de confianza y de protección.

La misma Virgen de Guadalupe debe ser el motor que transforme ese sentimiento en hechos de unidad y solidaridad entre todos los hispanos de nuestra comunidad. Esperamos en Dios y la Virgen que así sea.

migos, iniciamos un nuevo año. Las celebraciones grupales con la familia y las amistades por la Navidad y el Año Nuevo quedaron en el recuerdo, quizá plasmadas en fotos, palabras, historias grabadas en nuestras páginas sociales de Internet. Si vamos mas allá y lo meditamos estamos ya casi a mediados de Enero y pronto llegará Febrero con sus 29 días. El tiempo está avanzando rápidamente.

El contagioso bullicio de celebración nos permitió poco o casi nada de tiempo en un encuentro cercano con nosotros mismos. ¿Y ahora?...Ahora, si lo decidimos tenemos la oportunidad de estar con nuestro propio momento para pensar en lo que haremos en este 2016.

Casi a todos nos interesa contar con un calendario en casa; mucho mejor si es de aquel que tiene cuadros con fechas donde podamos anotar eventos importantes para no olvidarlos y por su puesto cumplirlos.

Esto a la vez me lleva a preguntarnos… ¿nos hemos regalado el tiempo necesario para elaborar nuestro propio calendario o dicho de otra manera nuestra “Resolución del Nuevo Año”?. Esta resolución es nuestro plan de

trabajo que nos permitirá interiorizar y dar sentido a nuestra vida, plantearnos metas, logros que podamos trabajar y alcanzar.

Este es el momento de realizarlo. Todo en la vida nos enseña que todo lo planificado contribuye al éxito, a lograr lo que más anhelamos, a construir o re-construir nuestro caminar.

Si un barco va por alta mar necesita una brújula que lo guie, si alguien se pierde en las montañas y conoce de las estrellas se guía por ellas y logra el camino acertado, si queremos ir a una calle o una ciudad desconocida usamos el GPS, las aves que migran conocen por su misma naturaleza tienen un horizonte que los lleva a trasladarse al lugar donde quieren ir, etc., etc. Y nosotros como personas ¿contamos con nuestra brújula o estamos viviendo el día a día? El actuar a ciegas solo conduce a la mediocridad y al fracaso.

Es importante nuestro plan de vida considerar diferentes aspectos. En el lado personal ¿que nos proponemos lograr? Quizá sea estudiar el idioma Inglés, este sería el objetivo, luego vienen las preguntas importantes que me permitirán lograrlo. Considero que las palabras claves son ¿Cómo, cuándo, donde, por qué, para qué?:

¿Cómo lo hago? Cuándo lo hago? Porqué lo hago? ¿Dónde lo puedo hacer?

Con qué recursos cuentos?

Cuanto tiempo le daré a esa actividad? No olvidar en el aspecto personal lo importante que es también el llevar una vida sana, hacer ejercicios y esto nos llevará a preguntarnos ¿cuánto tiempo le dedicare diariamente a esta actividad, ¿cada dos días o dos veces a la semana? Lo importante es planificarlo siendo objetivos con el tiempo con el que contaremos y los recursos que tenemos, y con la decisión de que lo cumpliremos. Al final de cada mes evaluar si lo hicimos o no. Si no lo conseguimos es porque tenemos que re-estructuar algún punto de nuestra planificación.

Esto se da en el aspecto personal, familiar, social.

Recordemos que somos seres sociales y que grato es el poder dar parte de nuestro tiempo a través del voluntariado. Hay oportunidades para hacerlo. Pongámonos un horizonte en nuestra vida, de paso con nuestro ejemplo de vida estaremos enseñando a los que nos siguen los pasos, nuestros hijos.

El ICE da una fría bienvenida al año 2016 ¿CÓMO ENCONTRARÁ EL ICE A ESTOS EXTRANJEROS?

El solicitante de asilo le ha dado al ICE gran cantidad de información personal para obtener su libertad bajo fianza- una dirección donde va a vivir, nombres y direcciones de patrocinadores o familiares en los Estados Unidos, números de teléfonos, records de empleos y nombres y direcciones de empleadores, retornos de impuestos y números de seguro social, entre otras cosas. La información es poder, y el ICE ahora tiene ese poder en sus manos.

os periódicos, New York Times y el Wall Street Journal reportaron el día de Nochebuena (¡Que irónico!) que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) ha anunciado un plan para que el ICE (Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas) lleve a cabo redadas de inmigración en todo el país a partir de enero del 2016 contra niños y familias que entraron a EE.UU., por la frontera sur en el 2014 y 2015, y quienes no se presentaron a sus audiencias en la corte de inmigración.

Se estima que durante 2014 y 2015, entraron a EE.UU a través de la frontera sur, decenas de miles, o hasta más de cien mil extranjeros indocumentados (tanto menores solos, como familias). La mayoría de estas personas provienen de países con violaciónes criminales y de derechos humanosGuatemala, Honduras y El Salvador. Ellos están buscando asilo en los EE.UU. Los individuos y las familias que son detenidos en la frontera sur son detenidos por el ICE en centros penitenciarios en los estados fronterizos, incluyendo Texas, Nuevo México y Arizona. Algunos incluso (aunque no lo crean), en un centro de detención en Pennsylvania!

En Junio del 2015, yo trabajé como voluntario en un centro de detención en Dilley, Texas. Anteriormente escribí un artículo en mi blog, sobre las condiciones deplorables en esa instalación, incluyendo las remociones de resumen, la falta de representación legal, y las horribles violaciónes al debido proceso de la ley.

He sido testigo de primera mano de muchos de estos problemas.

Muchas de estas personas son deportadas de los Estados Unidos porque no pueden convencer a un oficial de asilo de la veracidad de su solicitud

de asilo en un espacio de 20-30 minutos. Tenga en cuenta que el idioma nativo de muchas de estas personas no es el español.

Muchas de ellas vienen de Guatemala y hablan idiomas indígenos como Mam, Quiche, y Ka’kichel para los cuales hay pocos traductores competentes.

Estas mujeres y niños confusos, asustados y maltratados son muy tímidos y obedientes. Tienen miedo de admitir que no entienden o no hablan suficiente español para hacer frente de manera competente a las preguntas del oficial de asilo. ¿QUÉ LE SUCEDE A LOS SOLICITANTES DE ASILO QUE SON ADMITIDOS EN EE.UU? Los que logran pasar la revisión por parte del oficial de asilo están bajo palabra en los EE.UU. de que se presentarán en la corte de inmigración.

ICE tiene la discreción de darle libertad condicional en los Estados Unidos a otros solicitantes sin necesidad de revisión por un oficial de asilo.

Para ser puestos en libertad, esos individuos deben probar que pueden pagar una fianza substanciosa (que está $5000-$8000), proveer la dirección donde se quedarán, y el nombre e información de contacto y prueba de ingresos de una persona en EE.UU que actuará como el “fiador” para el solicitante de asilo. ¿CUÁL ES LA PERCEPCIÓN DEL PROBLEMA QUE MOTIVA A ICE A HACER LAS REDADAS?

El ICE presume que muchos de estos solicitantes de asilo, los cuales dejan las instalaciones de detención para ir a vivir con amistades o familiares en los Estados Unidos, posteriormente no se presentan a sus audiencias en las cortes de inmigración. Si el extranjero no se presenta en la corte, frecuentemente ordenan su deportación “in absentia” (en su ausencia).

Si por cualquier razón, el extranjero no se presenta en la corte, puede ordenarse su deportación de los Estados Unidos, su fianza será revocada por el ICE y por consiguiente se convierte en fugitivo, sujeto a arresto, prisión, y deportación acelerada de los Estados Unidos. ¿POR QUÉ NO SE PRESENTA UN EXTRANJERO EN LA CORTE? Una vez que el extranjero es puesto en libertad, su caso está supuesto a ser transferido a la corte de inmigración con jurisdición en el área donde éste residirá, de acuerdo con la información que aparece en la documentación de su fianza. La corte de inmigración entonces, emite una notificación para una audiencia “master” a la cual debe presentarse el extranjero, y la envía por correo a la dirección que la corte tiene en su archivo.

Existen muchas razones legítimas por las cuales el solicitante de asilo tal vez no se presente en la corte, incluyendo: la notificación fue entregada en una dirección incorrecta; hubo

un error tipográfico en dirigir la notificación; la notificación se perdió en el correo y nunca regresó a la corte de emisión para la re-entrega; el solicitante de asilo nunca recibió el aviso a pesar de que pudo haber sido entregado; la persona que recibió la notificación nunca se la dió al solicitante de asilo; el solicitante de asilo ya no reside en esa dirección; el solicitante de asilo no ha podido obtener representación legal o no tiene dinero para pagar la representación; el solicitante de asilo no entiende el proceso y teme presentarse en la corte por miedo a que lo detengan y lo deporten inmediatamente; el solicitante de asilo no puede conseguir transportación para ir a la corte de inmigración (por ejemplo, en el estado de Ohio entero, hay solo una corte de inmigración localizada en Cleveland.); el solicitante de asilo no entendió la notificación y no tiene a nadie que le ayude; el solicitante de asilo es menor de edad y no tiene a nadie que le ayude.

Claro que siempre hay un pequeño porcentage de personas que escojen no presentarse en la corte a propósito, y prefieren evadir a las autoridades y así quedarse en los Estados Unidos ilegalmente para trabajar y enviar dinero a sus paises para mantener a sus familias.

Pero, mi experiencia profesional es que la gran mayoría de los solicitantes de asilo que cruzan la frontera sur tienen reclamos creíbles quepodrian presentar ante un juez de inmigración.

DAÑOS COLATERALES: Tenga en cuenta- aunque el solicitante de asilo ya no viva en la dirección que le dió al ICE, es probable que otras personas vivan allí y es posible que esas personas sean indocumentadas. Así que esas redadas de ICE atraparán no sólo al solicitante, pero seguramente también a otros extranjeros indocumentados. Esto resultará en que otros extranjeros sean puestos en proceso de remoción. Por lo tanto, existe una probabilidad significativa de daños colaterales si ICE asalta el último domicilio o lugar de trabajo conocido del solicitante de asilo o del patrocinador.

SUPERANDO UNA ORDEN “EN-ABSENTIA”: Si el solicitante de asilo puede convencer a la Corte de Inmigración de que tiene una buena razón para no haber comparecido a su audiencia, el tribunal de inmigración podría revocar la orden en ausencia, y reabrir el caso.

En general, los jueces de inmigración han sido bastante indulgentes con la concesión de este tipo de mociones, sobre todo, si son presentadas por los solicitantes de asilo menores no acompañados (UAC). Sin embargo, el solicitante de asilo debe actuar de inmediato, tan pronto como entere de que perdió una comparecencia ante el tribunal.

Theatrics surrounding El Chapo’s capture distract from Mexico’s real woes

Pinning down the meaning of Joaquín Guzmán Loera — the deadly and celebrated Mexican drug trafficker known as El Chapo — is a constant battle between tragedy and farce.

“Of the 120,000 people dead in the past decade, half come from the wars that the Sinaloa cartel opened,” said Hector de Mauleon, a Mexican journalist and author.

ust as the government managed to recapture the fugitive crime boss, whose brutality and corruption of public officials kept him free for years, here came the circus: the revelation that he granted an interview to the actor Sean Penn and planned a movie about himself while still a fugitive.

Beyond the death toll, the cartels remain corrupting forces that exert control over every level of government. But unlike the government, which changes hands and switches players regularly, the cartels are far more permanent, Mr. de Mauleon said.

All of that has been fodder for front pages across the country. And the complex mixture of mirth, disbelief and disappointment it has generated here is a reflection of divisions among Mexicans themselves.

Many, though, seemed to take it as further justification for an abiding cynicism toward the government and its ability to combat drug traffickers who all too often seem not only above the law, but also stranger than fiction.

Despair found its outlet in humor. Social media buzzed with jokes about the capture and the interview, including a derogatory hashtag using Mr. Penn’s name in Spanish.

But widespread support for Mr. Guzmán’s extradition to the United States, after years of governmental resistance to the move, was an acknowledgment of continued concern about government corruption and weakness.

“It draws the frivolous interest of many people, the story by Sean Penn,” said Enrique Krauze, a prominent historian in Mexico.

“But the main point is that we have an immense problem with drugs and crime in Mexico, with impunity and with the lack of the rule of law in the criminal system.”

“The underlying thing is — here is El Chapo, but what about the other protagonists of Mexican impunity and violence, the politicians and police forces that for decades have been their allies and partners?” he added.

The government so far has struggled to assert itself through the wave of celebrity fascination and chaos that came after the news of Mr. Guzmán’s arrest. The accounts by officials left many details unclear. Conflicting repor-

Within minutes of his capture, comic memes began to emerge.

Mr. Penn’s turn as a journalist prompted hard feelings among those who recalled all too well how many Mexican reporters have died covering the drug war. To some, Mr. Penn’s account felt less like journalism than mythmaking, an extension of the Hollywood machine that Mr. Guzmán seemed eager to leverage.

Both the capture and the publication of the interview have fed the persistent international image of Mexico as a nation hopelessly trapped in the vicious tides of a drug war.

The kingpins, with their resources, egos and cat-

chy nicknames, never fail to capture the imagination of the world.

That all comes as bad news to people who have been remaking Mexico as something different: a country in the midst of reforms with a more responsive government and a growing center of culture and tourism.

The theatrics also distracted from the nation’s real and persistent problems.

Analysts asked why, if the government could hunt down El Chapo, it could not locate 43 students who disappeared from a teachers college in the state of Guerrero. Or why it could not halt the peso’s slide against the dollar, down nearly 20 percent in the past year.

“Instead of focusing on one person and placing all this attention and effort on one guy, they should focus on more relevant issues like education,” said Jose Fuentes López, 22, who waits tables at a coffee shop in Monterrey.

But he, too, saw the theater in it all.

“When you see this criminal being interviewed by a world-class actor you

know something is not right, because everything is like a show,” he added.

“He is a criminal, nothing else.”

As much as many here would like to turn their back on El Chapo and what he represents, they cannot. Too many others still find him compelling.

In his home state of Sinaloa, for example, there was no sense of triumph in the arrest of a man many viewed as a native son.

Feelings of shock gave way to worry. Who would come next? Would the transition be violent?

“We were perfectly comfortable when El Chapo was here,” said a 16year-old named Elvira, visiting a coffee shop in the city of Los Mochis, where Mr. Guzmán was captured. “Now we are worried someone else is going to come here and try to fill his spot.”

For many Mexicans, their government is an institution not to be trusted, and watching Mr. Guzmán consistently outsmart it was a favored pastime.

Like elsewhere, people love an outlaw and Mr. Guzmán gave them a lot to love.

One depicted two stick figures walking with a third, a rendering of the arrest. Another placed Mr. Guzmán’s head on a background dancer with the lyrics to a Justin Bieber song, asking whether it was too late to say sorry.

And shortly after the interview was published Saturday night, Mexicans came up with the hashtag #NoSeanPenndejos, a play on the actor’s name that, roughly translated, means don’t be a jerk.

“I don’t think you can describe Mexico without describing this fatalistic humor,” said Jennifer Clement, a novelist and president of PEN International who grew up in Mexico.

“If you can laugh at what hurts, it doesn’t hurt so much.”

Gobierno de EEUU recomienda limitar el azúcar y no advierte sobre carne roja El Sol de Ohio

as nuevas recomendaciones alimentarias del Gobierno de EE.UU. piden limitar los azúcares añadidos a menos del 10 % de las calorías diarias, eliminan el límite de 300 miligramos de colesterol de ediciones anteriores, pero no incluyen ninguna advertencia especial sobre la carne roja y procesada.

La guía alimentaria del país para los próximos cinco años alerta además de que los hombres y los adolescentes consumen demasiadas proteínas procedentes de la carne y los huevos y llama a reducir esa ingesta y aumentar la de vegetales.

La recomendación más concreta es el llamado a reducir la ingesta de azúcares añadidos a menos del 10 % de las calorías diarias.

Estos azúcares no incluyen los naturales, por ejemplo los que contiene la fruta fresca, sino que son aquellos que se añaden a los alimentos y bebidas cuando se preparan o procesan.

Uno de los apartados más esperados era el referen-

te al consumo de carne roja y procesada, tras la polémica advertencia que hizo el pasado octubre la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) sobre los riesgos que representa su ingesta para la salud.

Las recomendaciones estadounidenses no incluyen ninguna advertencia específica ni llaman a reducir el consumo de la carne procesada y roja.

Sí incluyen una tabla con ejemplos de alimentos altos en grasas saturadas que deberían ser limitados, en la que aparecen numerosos productos cárnicos como las hamburguesas.

En las recomendaciones de expertos para esta guía alimenticia se pedía que los estadounidenses adoptaran hábitos nutricionales más sostenibles para el medioambiente con la re-

ducción del consumo de carne, un consejo que no fue incluido en el documento final.

La guía recomienda limitar a menos del 10 % de las calorías diarias el consumo de grasas trans y saturadas.

y aceites tropicales como los de coco y palma.

años contra esta recomendación, que hizo temer a muchas personas el consumo de las yemas de huevo, ricas en colesterol.

La actual guía se limita a decir que los estadounidenses deberían ingerir “tan poco colesterol como sea posible” para disminuir el riesgo de padecer una enfermedad cardiovascular.

Sobre el sodio, pide limitarlo a menos de 2.300 miligramos al día para los mayores de 14 años y a menos para quienes no tienen esa edad. Advierte especialmente sobre la pizza y los platos de pasta, las salsas y las sopas preparadas.

El Gobierno añade por otra parte una referencia a que el café puede ser parte de una dieta saludable y aconseja tomar hasta cinco tazas al día.

La nueva guía también incluye un cambio de filosofía general sobre nutrición: no se trata simplemente de reducir las calorías o la grasa, como se ha creído, sino de seguir un patrón saludable de alimentación.

l sueño multifásico es frecuentemente relacionado con el genial artista e inventor renacentista Leonardo Da Vinci. Para pensar, probar y poner en práctica sus numerosas ideas él necesitaba mucho tiempo pero tal y como para muchos de nosotros, para él también era insuficiente. Al ser una persona ingeniosa, Da Vinci decidió optimizar su tiempo de sueño nocturno.

Dividió las horas de descanso nocturno en varias partes (fases), haciéndolo multifásico. Empezó a dormir 15 mintuos cada 4 horas. Su experimento resultó en la capacidad de reducir a una hora y media el tiempo que pasaba dormido, pudiendo así dedicarle más tiempo a sus creaciones. Este tipo de sueño multifásico fue usado por el maestro Da Vinci a lo largo de varios

años sin experimentar cansancio y logrando reponer sus energías en un 100% cada vez.

Se sabe que fisiológicamente hablando el tiempo más productivo para el arte y el trabajo es el que va después de dormir. Durante este periodo la eficiencia de la mente y el cuerpo es especialmente alta. Pero vale la pena recordar que cada organismo es único y por eso es posible que no todos puedan llevar a cabo el sueño multifásico.

Si has decididio intentarlo, te recomendamos dejar de conducir automóviles por algún tiempo y no tomar decisiones importantes hasta que sepas cuántas horas puedes quitarle a tu horario habitual de sueño.

As many as 10% of Americans have a mysterious sleep-related condition that sparks an all-consuming need to simply move, usually their legs.

Restless Legs Syndrome or RLS, as it’s called, can make it nearly impossible to get to sleep, especially for the 2 to 3% of people for whom the condition is moderate to severe.

Historically, experts divided RLS into two categories, primary and secondary, explains David Raizen, MD, PhD, a sleep researcher and assistant professor of neurology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. “Secondary RLS was thought to be due to some identifiable condition, such as iron deficiency or kidney disease,” he says. When those issues were addressed, by taking iron supplements or getting a kidney transplant, the RLS symptoms would disappear. Primary RLS, on the other hand, was thought to be due to a genetic trait a person was born with.

“With the advances in genetics research in the past 10 years or so, now it seems like those distinctions are blurred a little bit,” Raizen says. “Not everyo-

In other words, it’s still not all that clear why RLS happens to begin with. We do know it’s about twice as common in women than in men, and while RLS can affect anyone, symptoms

usually get worse with age. Raizen says researchers have also identified a handful of genes that can carry mutations that seem to be associated with RLS. “We have our foot in the door,” he says. “There’s a lot of research to be done to understand how these variations in gene activity might result in the syndrome.”

While we wait on science to sort that out, here are some important things we do know.

Trouble is, the germs are non-optional when making a morning coffee with the Nespresso machine shared by half the floor of an entire building.

According to a study from the University of Valencia in Spain and published in Scientific Reports, those 35 to 67 diverse bacterial genera milling around in the inner drip tray (below the discarded capsules) all have one thing in common: their development process can best be described as “rapid,” “rich,” and “dy-

namic”–three good things when you’re talking about an espresso, not so much when you’re discussing Enterococcus.

Sure, 10 isn’t a large sample pool, but researchers claim these machines were only used between two and 12 times a day. The one in your office is probably a lot more heavily frequented, and hopefully more frequently cleaned.

An Inissia Krups machine was also tested after two months of use as a control, and was also found to have a drip tray dominated by Enterococcus and Pseudomonas at the end of that period. However, the

study’s authors stress that these don’t actually end up in your coffee if you’re making it correctly.

“The coffee from [capsule] machines is perfectly safe,” co-author and biology scholar Manuel Porcar told Co.Design. “The tray containing the wasted capsules should be cleaned with water and soap, or a few drops of bleach.”

So a cup of coffee from a communal capsule machine is hardly going to kill you. Rather, that Enterococcus-coated drip tray could be a sign of your workplace’s superhero-strength resistance to cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, and type 2 diabetes.

What’s that? It’s been two whole months since something delicious was linked to cancer? Well, then: The FDA says it’s officially decided to ban three kinds of perfluoroalkyl ethyls, a class of exceptionally common chemicals used in water- and grease-proof pizza boxes and other food packaging, because new data show there’s “no longer a reasonable certainty” that they don’t cause birth defects or have other weird cancer-causing properties.

The agency says the three chemicals in question (an absolute mouthful that can be found here) can’t be used anymore in FCSs, or food-contact substances.

Almost a dozen groups — the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Center for Food Safety to the Breast Cancer Fund, and

so on — had filed a petition asking for the ban, which the FDA clarified will go into effect 30 days after whatever date it’s published in the Federal Register (basically the official log of federal rules). Scientists have been saying for a while that this class of chemicals found in food packaging needs to go. It can also be found in sandwich wrappers, the lining of microwave popcorn bags, and the wax pa-

per used to wrap pastries.

ccording to Cafardo, Ramirez’s For comes down to one thing, really. Or at least one thing that the voters are likely to think much about: “Ramirez’s numbers are extraordinary.” He’s 18th on the all-time RBI list, 15th on the home runs list.

Oh, and he’s eighth in career OPS. Now, we do have to leaven Ramirez’s numbers with a few grains of salt. He played most of his career in hitter’s parks, in a hitter’s era. So his adjustedOPS ranks just 27th. Which of course is still extraordinary. It’s just not eighth.

Cafardo also lists Ramirez’s Against, and I must mention that Cafardo is a master of understatement. To wit: “Defense was not a strength.”

Since World War II, Ramirez’s fielding Wins Above Replacement are fifth-worst among all outfielders, according to Baseball-Reference.com.

FanGraphs? Even worse.

If you consider defense -and yes, I understand that

I ran into Nick Cafardo’s latest notes column because of something he wrote in passing about Yoenis Cespedes, but I wound up taken instead by Cafardo’s treatise on the Hall of Fame prospects for Manny Ramirez, who debuts on the BBWAA ballot next year.

voters often don’t consider defense much at all, but please bear with me for a moment -- then Ramirez, even with all those OPS’s, falls into a group that includes, yes, players like Tim Raines and Tony

Gwynn and Al Simmons, but also players like Larry Walker and Kenny Lofton and Jim Edmonds. And none of those latter three are heading to Cooperstown anytime soon.

But as I said, voters don’t

care much about defense.

Historically speaking, Ramirez did the things that Hall of Fame voters have always admired.

If you think that was understatement, though, get a load of this one: “The

PED violations are maybe too much to overcome in the eyes of voters, even though they came at the end of his career.”

Maybe? Maybe too much?

Yes, for all we know, Ramirez didn’t start using illegal sports drugs until the end, or nearly the end.

I mean, that seems highly unlikely, based purely on what we know about the culture during that era.

But hey, it’s possible. It seems unlikely to me that Ramirez would come remotely close to 75 percent in a Hall of Fame election after failing three tests (two known, one alleged), when Bonds and Clemens can’t come close --”or haven’t so far, anyway -”after failing none.

Granted, that’s just my opinion. And it’s hardly a perfect analogy, as Bonds and Clemens, rightly or wrongly, are seen by many voters as Bizarro Apotheoses of their era, and punishable to the full extent of the ballots and periods of eligibility.

Fine. Lousy analogy. You want a better one. You deserve a better one. Rafael Palmeiro.

Palmeiro’s qualitative hitting numbers aren’t as good as Rami¬rez’s. But his big-time counting stats -- the homers and the RBI, in particular -- are dead ringers. Their overall Wins Above Replacement are virtually identical, too.

Now, before I get to my big reveal, I really should mention one huge difference between Palmeiro and Ramirez. While neither of them ever won an MVP Award or even finished second, Manny’s got four top-five finishes and nine top 10s, while Palmeiro’s got just one top five (fifth) and three top 10s. Whatever your feelings about the MVP, they’re a pretty good gauge of the writers’ perceptions of a player during his career. And it’s pretty obvious that Ramirez was perceived as a significantly better player.

On the other hand, memories do fade, leaving the numbers. And the numbers for these guys really aren’t so different.

Chris Weidman: I’m glad I lost El Sol de Ohio

In the third round of his UFC 194 co-main event middleweight title defense,Chris Weidman threw a spinning head kick that missed, and opened him up. Challenger Luke Rockhold capitalized, took him down and pounded on him for the rest of the round, bloodying and battering the defending champ.

That was the start of the end for Weidman. Up until that point, he and Rockhold fought one another closely at a high pace.

After the kick, Weidman was dominated. Still, “The All-American” doesn’t regret throwing it.

In fact, he’s glad that he lost the fight. “I don’t regret doing that, because I’m happy I lost,” he told MMA Fighting, this week.

“Everybody has been talking about the kick, and I do feel like I was winning

the fight, but I was running on like two cylinders and I feel like I deserved to lose that fight, and I’m happy I did . . . He took me down. But that doesn’t mean it should be the end of the fight for me.”

Weidman is plenty critical of himself, after his first professional loss, but

the kick just isn’t one of the things that is stuck in his craw. He said that he felt things not going very well during training camp, weeks earlier.

Now that he’s finally lost, he has an excuse to make changes he sees as needed. “There were things that I should’ve been do-

ing that I didn’t do as soon as I hit the ground, and there’s reasons I didn’t.

There’s things that I’m excited about to change, to do things differently,” he said.

“Now I have the ability to come back, better,” he continued.

“If I would have won the

fight, I don’t think my improvement from fight to fight would’ve been there.

I think I would’ve stuck with the same things -- the ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,’ [attitude]. Being undefeated for that long of a time, you just don’t feel a need to change things. So I now have that gift, to be

able to just be free. Whatever I feel I need to do, I can do without secondguessing myself.”

Make no mistake about it, losing is a foreign and not pleasant feeling for Weidman. “It was surreal,” he said.

“It was just weird losing.”

Now, however, it is simply time to make the most of the experience. The fighter said he had trouble getting motivated before the Rockhold fight.

Without his belt, and with new bruises and his first ‘L,’ motivation will no longer be an issue. “But then, shortly after you realize -- ‘You know what, this is part of the plan.

El Papa expresa su alegría por visita a cuatro estados en México El Sol de Ohio Special Report

l Papa Francisco manifestó su alegría por la inminente visita a cuatro estados en México, en su viaje apostólico a ese país previsto del 12 al 18 de febrero próximo.

Al finalizar su encuentro anual con diplomáticos acreditados ante la Santa Sede, en la Sala Regia del Palacio Apostólico del Vaticano, el pontífice saludó al representante mexicano Mariano Palacios Alcocer e intercambió algunas palabras con él.

“Fue un saludo cordial porque le agradecimos a su santidad el viaje explicándole que ya estábamos muy ansiosos de recibirlo en México y nos respondió que está muy contento de visitar cuatro estados y por supuesto a la Virgen de Guadalupe”, dijo el diplomático.

“Fue muy cordial, ya muy puesto todo el equipo de la

Secretaría de Estado (del Vaticano) que está muy pendiente de los avances que tengamos en esto”, agregó en declaraciones a Notimex.

Francisco llegará a la Ciudad de México en un viaje que incluirá actividades en Ecatepec (Estado de México), Tuxtla Gutiérrez y San Cristóbal de las Casas (Chiapas), Morelia

Justamente el líder católico se refirió a su paso por Ciudad Juárez en su largo discurso a los embajadores, recordando la

“dramática situación” de los migrantes que intentan cruzar la frontera hacia Estados Unidos.

Palacios Alcocer recordó que el mensaje papal se centró en el “gran pro-

blema de la migración” y cuando refirió al circuito de la migración en el continente americano, la única actividad internacional que anticipó es la que tiene que ver con la visita a Ciudad Juárez el mes próximo.

“El Papa destacó algo que nosotros hemos sostenido mucho en México: que el migrante representa un potencial enorme de riqueza en el intercambio cultural y su aportación a la construcción de un sistema económico, a la productividad, al diálogo interreligioso y la realidad cultural”, abundó.

Insistió en destacar la preocupación de Francisco por dejar en claro que los migrantes “no son un lastre” y que los países receptores, sin demérito de los derechos de sus ciudadanos, deben respetar su identidad étnica, cultural y religiosa como parte del más amplio sentido de la tolerancia.

México: Dan a conocer cifras de sacerdotes asesinados en 2015 El Sol de Ohio Special Report

a Unidad de Investigación del Centro Católico Multimedial (CCM), informó que durante el 2015 el crimen organizado dio muerte a tres sacerdotes, aumentando a 50 las personas vinculadas a la Iglesia asesinadas en los últimos 25 años.

Las víctimas fueron el P. Israel Garrido, párroco de la Iglesia de San Benito Abad en el Estado de México; el P. Francisco Javier Gutiérrez Díaz, de la Confraternidad de los Operarios del Reino de Cristo (CORC), adscrito a la Arquidiócesis de Morelia Michoacán; así como el P. Erasto Pliego de Jesús, párroco de Cuyoaco, adscrito a la Arquidiócesis de Puebla.

El CCM inició estas mediciones en 1990 y desde entonces han perdido la vida un cardenal, 38 sacerdotes, un diácono, cuatro religiosos, cinco sacristanes y una periodista católica. Todos “a cau-

sa de proseguir con ardor su misión eclesial a pesar de las dificultades y de la situación de violencia permanente que se vive el país”, indicó.

Según el Sistema Informativo de la Arquidiócesis de México (SIAME), el reporte señaló que el 44 por ciento de atentados corresponden a secuestros

y torturas, 35 por ciento fueron asaltos a parroquias, 15 por ciento fueron agresiones en la calle; y 6 por ciento corresponden a causa desconocida.

Además, los datos analizados desde hace 25 años señalan al estado de Guerrero y al Distrito Federal como las entidades más peligrosas para el ejerci-

cio ministerial, con un 15 por ciento cada uno. Le sigue Chihuahua y Michoacán, con 9 por ciento cada uno; Veracruz, 8 por ciento; Baja California, Tamaulipas y Puebla, con 6 por ciento cada uno; Oaxaca, Jalisco, Estado de México, con 4 por ciento cada uno; Coahuila, Hidalgo, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Sinaloa, Durango y Colima con un 2 por ciento cada uno.

“Los datos aquí expuestos, señalan lamentablemente, a la República Mexicana como el país latinoamericano más peligroso para ejercer el ministerio sacerdotal. Si vemos el fenómeno en perspectiva histórica, el panorama no es alentador, toda vez que nuestro país cumple una década como primer lugar en crímenes de odio contra sacerdotes, religiosos y laicos. 20 mil presos en todo el mundo son alcanzados con herramienta de evangelismo El Sol de Ohio

n curso de evangelismo producido por una iglesia anglicana en Londres ha demostrado ser un éxito entre los prisioneros, más de 20.000 presos completaron el curso de los últimos 12 meses.

The Prisoners Journey se basa en Christianity Explored, un curso de evangelismo producido por el reverendo Rico Tice, ministro asociado para el evangelismo de All Souls -Todos los Santos-, en Langham Place y el escritor Barry Cooper. Desde que fue puesto en marcha por All Souls en 2002, Christianity Explored, ha sido traducido a 20 idiomas y más de 5. 000 cursos al año se han realizado en más de 80 países.

En enero pasado, Christianity Explored Ministries (CEM) vinculado con la Confraternidad Carcelaria

Internacional (PFI, por sus siglas en inglés) con Prisoners Journey, eleboraron la versión del curso para su uso en las cárceles. En los últimos 12 meses se ha utilizado en 103 prisiones en 11 países, entre ellos Nigeria, Australia, Singa-

pur, España y Brasil.

“Esto significa que 20.000 reclusos fueron alcanzados con el Evangelio en el año 2015 en los cinco continentes”, dijo CEM. “Nueve países más se unirán al programa en 2016: Portugal, Honduras, Mal-

ta, Albania, Kenia, Zambia, Swazilandia, Togo y Burkina Faso.

“Los testimonios de esos presos que han completado el curso son elocuentes y poderosos. Un ejemplo es Daniel, de Sudáfrica, quien dijo: ‘Una gran

cantidad de personas que no son creyentes están tomando parte en ello, sobre todo en mi celda. Incluso los reclusos que solía invitar a la iglesia y no aceptaban mi invitación, se han unido a este programa’”.

PFI fue fundada en 1979 y cuenta con una red de 45.000 voluntarios que llevan el ministerio a la prisión a dos millones de presos en 3.700 cárceles en más de 120 países. Se estima que hay 10 millones de presos en 22.000 cárceles de todo el mundo A través de Prisoners Journey, PFI tiene la esperanza de alcanzar un millón de prisioneros con el Evangelio en 2020.

100-year-old woman sews over 1,000 dresses for african girls El Sol de Ohio Special Report

A

100-year-old woman from Iowa has made over 1,000 dresses for girls in Africa. Christian Today reports Lillian Weber made a goal to sew 1,000 dresses by her 100th birthday and surpassed the goal, creating 1,051 by May 6.

Weber sews the dresses for Little Dresses for Africa, a Christian organization that sends the garments to 47 African countries and 31 other countries around the world.

Weber’s daughter Linda said that her mother

makes each dress unique by adding some kind of embellishment.

“She personalizes all the dresses. It’s not like good enough that she makes the dresses, she has to put something on the front to make it look special, to give it her touch,” she said.

Weber said that she intends to keep sewing dresses as long as she is able.

“It’s just one of those things you learn how to do and enjoy. I won’t quit.

I’ll go at it again because there’s no reason to not do nothing,” she said.

Cifra de detenidos por tráfico de personas disminuyó en EUA El Sol de Ohio Special Report

Condenan a 820 años de cárcel a narcotraficante “El taquero”

L

a justicia guatemalteca condenó a 820 años de prisión al narcotraficante Marvin Montiel Marín, alias “El taquero”, por la ejecución de 15 comerciantes nicaragüenses y un turista holandés en el 2008.

Uno de los presuntos jefes del narcotráfico guatemalteco fue sentenciado con base en las pruebas aportadas por el Ministerio Público (MP), según la resolución del Tribunal “C” de Mayor Riesgo, presidido por el juez Pablo Xetumul.

Xetumul indicó que las investigaciones del MP permitieron también la condena a miembros del grupo criminal de “El taquero”, Luis Yuman Garrido y Mynor Aroldo Gutiérrez condenados a 826 años de prisión.

Los dos integrantes de la banda de Montiel Marín recibieron seis años más de cárcel por el asesinato en grado de tentativa contra Francisco Concova Martínez.

También fue sentenciado José Ignacio de Jesús Folgar a seis años de prisión y al pago de una multa de 300 mil dólares, mientras que Roberto Rivera Chacón fue beneficiado con libertad condicionada por su colaboración para esclarecer este caso.

El 8 de noviembre de 2008, el grupo criminal encabezado por “El taquero” interceptó un autobús de pasajeros proveniente de Nicaragua por sospechas de que transportaba drogas o dinero de una banda rival del narcotráfico.

El vehículo fue secuestrado junto con sus ocupantes y desviado de una carretera del municipio de Barberena, departamento de Santa Rosa, hacia Río Hondo, departamento de Zacapa, en la región oriental del país.

Los narcotraficantes revisaron el autobús y al comprobar que no transportaba droga ni dinero acribillaron e incineraron a los 15 comerciantes nicaragüenses y al turista holandés, en un intento de borrar evidencias y dificultar la identificación de las víctimas.

l número de personas detenidas por la Oficina de Migración y Aduanas (ICE) bajo cargos de tráfico de personas durante el año fiscal 2015 se redujo respecto al 2014, de acuerdo con cifras dadas a conocer por la dependencia.

En contraste, la cifra de víctimas de este delito, muchas de ellas mujeres traídas a este país con fines de explotación sexual o como servidoras domésticas, se ubicó el año pasado ligeramente por arriba del 2014.

En total mil 437 personas acusadas de trafico de personas fueron arrestadas durante el año fiscal 20015 –comprendido entre octubre del 2014 y septiembre pasado-, en contraste con las mil 770 detenidas en el periodo anterior.

La dependencia informó haber identificado a casi 400 víctimas de este tráfico, lo que significó una ligera baja con relación a las 440 del año fiscal 2014.

La directora del ICE, Sarah Saldaña, dijo que pese a estos resultados y el impacto que las detenciones tuvieron en la operación de las bandas criminales dedicadas a este ilícito, “aún queda mucho por hacer”.

“Aunque los esfuerzos de las agencias policíacas resultan cruciales en este causa, educar al público para reconocer señales del tráfico y apoyar a las organizaciones que trabajan para apoyar a estas víctimas son parte importante

de nuestra estrategia”, dijo.

Algunos de los casos notables en el 2015 fueron el arresto de 29 sospechosos de tráfico de personas y el rescate de 13 mujeres y niñas de México y Centroamérica obligadas a la prostitución, en una investigación que derivó en 41 acusaciones criminales.

Otro más fue el caso de dos empleadas domésticas traídas de Qatar por un militar qatarí y su esposa, detenidos y acusados de trabajo forzado por

no pagar salario alguno a ambas mujeres, quienes eran mantenidas incomunicadas en su casa en San Antonio, Texas.

Igualmente el arresto en México del mexicano Paulino Ramírez, acusado por autoridades estadunidenses de ser parte de un grupo criminal familiar con base en Nueva York que con engaños trajo a Estados Unidos a jóvenes mujeres mexicanas que eran forzadas a la prostitución.

Aumentan los asaltos a viviendas en Caracas El Sol de Ohio

finales del mes de diciembre pasado un total de 200 hogares fueron asaltadas por delincuentes comunes en Caracas, bajo la modalidad de “invítame a conocer tu hogar”, informó el experto en criminalística Reinaldo Olivares Bosque.

“Esta práctica delictiva se ha hecho muy popular en la ciudad capital y las denuncias abundan en las jefaturas de las policías”, precisó el ex Jefe de Investigaciones de la extinta Policía Técnica Judicial (PTJ) en conversación que sostuvo con Notimex.

Olivares detalló que la misma es muy similar al secuestro: escogen las víctimas al azar. Ven a un vecino paseando a su mascota o trotando, lo interceptan y lo obligan a entrar al inmueble. Allí lo amordazan con tirro (cinta adhesiva) y saquean su vivienda.

“El 80 por ciento de los robos cometidos en viviendas son bajo esta nue-

va forma de delinquir, por lo que ahora los vecinos de las urbanizaciones de clase media y alta no se atreven salir a la calle, por temor a ser víctimas de estos antisociales”, precisó.

Juan Arriojas, quien se encontraba introduciendo su denuncia en la sede de un cuerpo policial dijo a Notimex que muy temprano fue a comprar el periódico en un kiosco de la urbanización Macaracuay y después de tomar un café se dispuso regresar al hogar.

Relató que justo cuando abría la puerta de su apartamento tres jóvenes lo encañonaron y obligaron a entrar. “Cuando estuvimos dentro me amordazaron y comenzaron a registrar la casa. Se llevaron una laptop, 300 dólares que guardaba en el closet y unas prendas de mi mujer”.

“Afortunadamente ella (su mujer) estaba en Margarita recibiendo el año nuevo con su mamá, porque de haber estado en casa se

hubiera infartado, ya que sufre de una severa afección coronaria. Yo hasta agradecí a Dios el hecho de que no me mataran”, comentó.

Pedro Malavé, quien también hacía antesala en la sede policial, se unió a la conversación y relató que en la urbanización La Castellana ya no someten a los residentes en las puertas de los edificios, sino que los hampones usan rapel para ingresar a las viviendas.

‘He’s cuban I’m mexican’: Can Rubio and Cruz connect with Latino voters?

Rubio says things that are not good for Mexicans,” Herrera said, adding that she supports Hillary Clinton. “I would never vote for him just because he’s Latino.”

Maria Herrera, a 62-year-old retired casino housekeeper, feels no affinity for Marco Rubio even as he aims to make history as the first Hispanic president of the United States. As she explained: “He’s Cuban. I’m Mexican.”

Rubio, whose parents are from Cuba, and Ted Cruz, whose father was born in Cuba, are competing to be the first Hispanic in the White House — and casting unprecedented attention on the nation’s growing Hispanic vote.

But in several key swing states — Nevada, Colorado, Florida and Virginia — most Latinos are not Cuban. Most lean Democratic — and identify more with their country of origin than with the broader terms, Hispanic or Latino, for those from Spanishspeaking countries. Most also oppose both Rubio’s and Cruz’s positions on immigration reform. All of that, in addition to longstanding tensions between Cuban and Mexican immigrants, could dash the GOP’s hopes that Cruz or Rubio could do what few Republicans have been able to do in a presidential election: attract significant Hispanic support.

Mexicans account for nearly two-thirds of the Latinos in the United States — about 35 million people. Cubans are the third-largest group, after Puerto Ricans, with just 2 million people, or only 3.7 percent of the Latino vote,according to the Pew Research Center.

In interviews in wedding chapels and casinos, all around this city of stretch limos, slot machines and neon signs, Mexicans who make up so much of the workforce said it would be far more meaningful to elect the first Mexican American president than the first Latino. Many said they would vote for a nonLatino over a Cuban American.

In two days of interviews, not a single Mexican said he or she supported Rubio or Cruz, and even some Cubans said they don’t plan to support either Cuban American candidate.

Part of the friction between Mexicans and Cubans comes from the starkly different reception

not eligible to vote. But those Mexicans who are citizens, such as Herrera, who was washing her clothes in a laundromat, said they plan to vote for Clinton. The Republicans and Democrats are holding caucuses in Nevada next month, in the first primary-season voting in the West, right after Iowa and New Hampshire.

Herrera said she was more interested in having the first female president than the first Latino president.

What Clinton says is more appealing to her than what she hears from Rubio or Cruz, she said.

Many Cubans lavished praise on Rubio, who lived in Las Vegas as a child while his father worked as a hotel bartender and his mother as a maid. A few said they like Cruz but not enough to consider voting for him.

“No way” will Mexicans rally around presidential candidates just because they are Cuban, he said. they get when they arrive in the United States. Cubans who reach U.S. shores are almost automatically granted residency and eligibility for food stamps and other welfare benefits because of a special policy for those coming from the communist island — many arriving through Mexico. Mexicans who enter without legal papers live under the threat of deportation.

There are cultural distinctions, too. They speak with different accents, celebrate different customs and eat different foods. Mexico is soccer-obsessed, while Cuba loves baseball.

“Except for the fact that they both speak Spanish, everything else is totally different,” said Carlos Artiles, 50, a bartender at the Florida Café Cuban Bar & Grill, where the eggs come with stuffed potatoes and fried plaintains. Artiles, a Cuban, quickly became a citizen, but he sees firsthand how Mexicans, including his wife, try unsuccessfully for years and “pay thousands of dollars to attorneys to help. It’s completely unfair.”

“No way” will Mexicans rally around presidential candidates just because they are Cuban, he said.

“Like oil and water” is how Alejandro Carrillo, a Mexican salesman, describes Mexicans and Cubans. He said he believes that Cubans have it easier in the United States and often act as though they are better than Mexicans.

As he shopped in Moda Latina, looking at cowboy boots and hats, Carrillo said the differences between Cubans and Mexicans extend right down to how they dress: “I never once saw a Cuban who wore boots.”

About 30 percent of Nevada’s population and 20 percent of its electorate is Latino. Mexicans far outnumber any Latino group here, but Cubans command an outsize influence.

Cuba had a thriving casino business when Fidel Castro seized control in 1959, and many Cuban casino workers fled the island and moved to this gambling mecca. For decades, Cubans have been influential in business,

Spanish-language media and politics — just as they are in South Florida, home to the greatest concentration of Cubans.

Otto Merida, a prominent Cuban here who ran the Latin Chamber of Commerce for 40 years, said, “It would be a dream to have a Cuban American in the White House,” and he likes Rubio.

But early on, Merida signed up to support former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

“If he could catch fire,” Bush would do very well with Mexican Americans because he is married to a woman born in Mexico, he said.

Andres Ramirez, a Democratic strategist in Nevada, said that despite differences, many Cubans and Mexicans get along. Some Hispanics — no matter the nationality — will vote for a candidate “just because they’re a Latino, just like some people will vote for a woman because she is woman — but that is not the majority.”

“Surnames can matter, but people vote on policy and platforms,” Ramirez said.

Rubio, whose wife is the daughter of immigrants from Colombia, has shown more ability to win over non-Cuban Hispanics in Florida than Cruz has in Texas, when they ran their Senate races, according to exit polls. Rubio campaigns, in both English and fluent Spanish, about being the son of immigrants who came to America for a better life for their children.

But Fernand Amandi, managing partner of Bendixen & Amandi International, which frequently surveys the Hispanic community, said that in a presidential election, Rubio will face much more intense opposition because Democrats will highlight the fact that he yanked his support for comprehensive immigration reform. Cruz unequivocally — “today, tomorrow, forever” — opposes giving citizenship to millions of undocumented immigrants, a great number of whom are Mexican.

by Mexicans. Trump has referred to some Mexicans as “rapists” and promised to build a gigantic wall on the border to keep Mexicans out.

“Trump says what others won’t. He fears nothing,” said Elizabeth Abad, 46, who left Cuba a decade ago, became a U.S. citizen and works at the Florida Café. “I like his toughness.”

Sergio Perez, 47, owner of the Florida Café and the Havana Grill, where Rubio recently held a big rally, also thinks Trump is the best candidate “in these difficult times.” Perez said people are anxious and cannot afford the same life — not even the same amount of groceries — they once had. “Nobody felt good this Christmas,” he said, adding that Trump, a businessman, knows how to build things and put people to work.

“It’s a dream to have a Cuban guy as president,” he said about Rubio, whom he called “a beautiful guy, smart, charming. He could be a great vice president.”

But don’t expect Mexicans to vote for him because, Perez said, “Eighty percent of the Mexicans don’t like the Cuban people.”

Otterbein Tells the Story of Cuba through Opening Doors to the World Initiative El Sol de Ohio

s tensions ease between the U.S. and Cuba, Otterbein University is stepping up to tell the story of the complex neighboring nation. Through an initiative called Opening Doors to the World, Otterbein will share the artistic achievements of the Cuban people and encourage critical dialogue about Cuba’s history from Jan. 11-May 1.

According to Provost Miguel Martinez-Saenz, “Otterbein University hopes to tell a story that shows our students and our surrounding community that they must always resist telling and believing ‘a single story.’ Adopting a visual arts exhibition titled An Island Apart, combining it with panels on Cuban social and political history, with panels on doing business in Cuba to-

day and culminating with a celebration and performance by one of Cuba’s premiere composers and jazz pianists, José María Vitier, we hope those who are fortunate enough to experience all our programming will come away resisting ‘a single story.’”

Otterbein is able to bring Opening Doors to the World to life through partnerships, including a federal Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Otterbein was announced as a recipient of the NEA grant on Dec. 8.

The $20,000 grant supports one component of the initiative, the exhibition An Island Apart: Cuban Artists in Exile, which includes artwork, performance art and art documentaries by 12 Cuban or Cuban-American artists.

Highlights of the exhibi-

tion will be an artist-led community installation by resident artist Juan Si González, two art documentaries by artist and educator Coco Fusco, and a performance art piece at the opening reception by Carlos Martiel.

NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, “The arts are part of our everyday lives – no matter who you are or where you live – they have the power to transform individuals, spark economic vibrancy in communities, and transcend the boundaries across diverse sectors of society. Supporting projects like the one from Otterbein University offers more opportunities to engage in the arts every day.”

Art Works is the NEA’s largest funding category, supporting the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, and promoting public engagement with diverse

and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts.

Additional funding to support artist-in-residence Juan Si González is provided by the Ohio Arts Council. Funding for accompanying events is provided by the Greater Columbus Arts Council, Kegler Brown Hill + Ritter, Dr. Anahi Ortiz and Mr. William T. Conard, the Law Office of José Pertierra, and the Johnstone Fund for New Music.

Other key partnerships are bringing musical performances to stages at Otterbein and in the community. Maestro José María Vitier, pianist and film score composer, will be an artist-in-residence at Otterbein and will collaborate with musicians from Otterbein and the Westerville Symphony during his residency.

A Manhattan theft rooted in a tale of songwriting, Sinatra and Cigars By michael wilson

he story of the thief who walked out of an expensive Manhattan cigar store with four boxes of medium-blend Dominicans last month actually begins decades earlier, before he was born. It starts in the 1960s, with an encounter between two men that would change both their lives. One of those men was Avo Uvezian, an Armenian jazz musician living in New York City.

The other was also a musician, from New Jersey, named Frank Sinatra.

The title was new, too.

“Broken Guitar” was out. The new name was “Strangers in the Night.”

Mr. Uvezian was born in 1926 in Beirut. He became an accomplished musician who traveled the Middle East, speaking multiple languages along the way.

“I usually count in Armenian in my head,” he told Cigar Journal in an interview this year. “I find the best language to swear in is Turkish, and when dreaming of pretty women, French is the best language.”

Playing piano, he led a jazz combo that performed in Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, where he became the personal entertainer of the shah. In 1947, he moved to New York and entered the Juilliard School of Music.

Nonetheless, with his last No. 1 single several years behind him, he was persuaded to record the song in 1966.

The title was new, too.

“Broken Guitar” was out. The new name was “Strangers in the Night.”

In Mr. Uvezian’s telling, what should have been a monumental triumph and breakthrough turned out to be a source of great

grief. He did not receive credit for the song. Before Sinatra ever heard the music, Mr. Uvezian, a novice, had sent it to a friend, Bert Kaempfert, an established German composer, to be published there, he said.

Mr. Kaempfert is credited with the composition, a

Years passed, and by the 1960s, he had written his own music. One melody stood out.

“The song itself is a very simple song,” Mr. Uvezian, 89, said this month by telephone from his home in Orlando, Fla. “You take the thing and you repeat it. ‘Dah-dahdah-dah-daaaah.’ It’s the same line repeated throughout.”

He had a friend who knew Sinatra. The friend set up a meeting and told Mr. Uvezian to bring along his music. Someone else had put lyrics to the melody, and called it “Broken Guitar.”

Sinatra gave it a listen.

“He said, ‘I love the melody, but change the lyrics,’” Mr. Uvezian recalled. The task was given to studio songwriters, and they came back with new words. Sinatra, legend has it, hated it. “I don’t want to sing this,” he said when

“The beginner or longtime smoker, he could find satisfaction in that Classic,” Mr. Uvezian said. snatch of which was first heard buried within the title song of a James Garner film called “A Man Could Get Killed.”

Mr. Kaempfert, who died in 1980, did not seem to hesitate in listing the song as among his highest achievements, but Mr. Uvezian said that Mr. Kaempfert had given him credit for its creation many times, including in a written letter.

A reporter ran this version of the events behind “Strangers in the Night” past the New York City radio personality Jonathan

Schwartz, an authority on Sinatra. “I haven’t heard it before, but I wouldn’t doubt it,” Mr. Schwartz said in a recent interview. “It sounds authentic to me.”

Mr. Kaplan, in his book, credits Mr. Kaempfert as the composer.

The experience soured Mr. Uvezian on the music business and on New York City, he said. “It’s a painful thing for me. I want to forget it,” he said. “I have a hell of a lot of better music.”

He moved to Puerto Rico and started over. He played piano at a resort. He

had smoked a pipe in the past, but he was introduced to good cigars on the occasion of his daughter’s christening in 1982, he said. A friend ordered him one, and Mr. Uvezian could not believe what it cost when the bill came.

He saw an opportunity that would lead to a flourishing second career.

He traveled to the Dominican Republic and visited a cigar manufacturer.

He met a master blender named Hendrik Kelner.

“He made 10 or 12 different blends,” Mr. Uvezian said. Mr. Uvezian sampled them over a month

The musician handed out his cigars from his piano bench at gigs. People came back for more. He sent samples to Davidoff of Geneva, a worldwide distributor.

Davidoff bought the Avo line of cigars in 1995 and now sells some two million a year, said Scott Kolesaire, the brand manager.

“The construction, balance and palate stimulation were just top notch,” Mr. Kolesaire said of the Avo Classic.

Another blend, stronger in taste, was created, the Avo XO. The Davidoff store on Avenue of the Americas just below Central Park, which contains

a smoking lounge, keeps its Avo line in the climatecontrolled, walk-in humidor it installed in January.

It was into this humidor that an unidentified man in his 30s walked, alone and unnoticed, on Nov. 23 at 4:20 p.m. He scooped four boxes of cigars into a big Bed Bath & Beyond bag and left. They were Avo XOs, each box worth $261.22.

Mr. Uvezian, informed of the theft by a reporter’s call, was unfazed. He’s had bigger headaches than 80 of his two million cigars going missing. “It can happen,” he said.

A salesman at the store, Rafael de los Reyes, pulled a similar box off the shelf in mid-December and pointed to the name on the cover.

“This guy,” he said, “wrote ‘Strangers in the Night.’”
