Salut Jean-Jacques Merci pour m’avoir envoyé la maquette du livre...Elle est vraiment incroyable ! Tout comme ton travail et ton histoire...

C’est tellement différent de la mienne, fils d’immigrés européens d’avant la guerre ayant grandi dans la culture américaine des années 40 et 50 : travaillant dans le milieu de «l’art commercial,» tout en ayant des velléités d’art de «grande culture», et sans intérêt (ou d’expérience) dans les drogues, le rock and roll, ou la culture pop des jeunes de l’époque (qui en toute honnêteté a réellement commencé au début des années 60) et ...qui ai toujours vécu une vie de famille banlieusarde !

Je te donne toutes ces infos pour dire que je n’ai pas les connaissances pour comprendre les sources de ton œuvre si ce n’est la source essentielle qu’est l’« esthétique pure » Et en ce sens je ressens en moi un esprit très proche de ton œuvre... Elle forme ce que j’appelle, la «réalisation d’une œuvre complète indéniable» quand elle transcende toutes ses origines (même si cellesci sont très claires) et devient un style emblématique qui n’appartient qu’à toi...

It’s so very different from mine, a son of pre-war European immigrants, coming of age in the American culture of the 40s and 50s: working in the midcult of «commercial art,» coupled with the pretensions of «high-culture» art, and with no interest (or experience) in drugs, rock and roll, or then current pop or youth culture (which in all honesty really started in the early 60s) and ...living all my life a very suburban family existence !

I’m giving you all this background stuff to say that I have no deep understanding of the sources of your work other than the important one of of «pure aesthetics» And in that I feel very much a kindred spirit to your work... It has what I call, an «undeniable body of accomplishment,» when it transcends all its origins (even though they are very clear) and becomes a signature style that is truly only yours...

Peu, au final, résiste à son écrémage. Certains la quittent pour des chemins plus rassurants, certains y succombent. (Ed Fella est devenue une icône, David Carson, un show-man, Neville Brody polisse des packagings). Imperturbable, Jean-Jacques Tachdjian semble avoir construit, au sein de la capsule marginalité, une forteresse, où deux conduites (d’alimentation énergétique et éthique) étonnent : la profusion et la générosité. Comment peuton produire autant, en dehors des circuits conventionnels, quand être dans les marges signifie se heurter à toutes sortes de difficultés, dont les moins glorieuses, les préoccupations financières ? Comment créer autant d’images qui s’enchainent, dégoulinent, s’emmêlent, qui semblent émerger aisément, jaillir, comme si de rien n’était, comme si les conditions socio-économiques

avaient si peu de poids... Les délires et les déliés typographiques triomphent et ce depuis vingt-sept ans. Dans cette production incessante, la générosité ne faiblit pas, celle actionnée pour concevoir des livres, des fanzines pour d’autres auteurs avec les éditions de la Chienne, celle tendue vers la transmission.

Mes étudiants de l’ESADHaR évoquent le workshop1 conçu par Jean-Jacques Tachdjian comme étant l’un des plus importants de leur scolarité, parce que perspicace et entier, cet étrange vestige du punk les a emmené au plus loin dans l’aventure typographique.

Pourquoi produire à cette cadence effrénée ? Pourquoi cette lutte coriace entre la solitude et le rien (le rien de la reconnaissance, le rien de ses ephemera, flyers, affichettes). Là, s’ouvre le gouffre de la marginalité, entre la production et sa réception (critique notamment).

Few finally resist its skimming process. Some leave it for more reassuring paths, some die from it. (Ed Fella has become an icon, David Carson, a show-man, Neville Brody makes fonts for packaging). Imperturbable, JeanJacques Tachdjian seems to have built within the capsule of marginality a fortress, in which two conducts (for energy supply and ethical) surprise : profusion and generosity. How can so much be produced outside of the conventional networks, when being in the margin means having to face all kinds of difficulties, including the more menial ones, money problems?

How can so many images be created that entwine, drip, entangle, that seem to emerge with ease, to crop up, as if nothing were wrong, as if the social and economic conditions were no matter ‌ The typographic deliriums and curves conquer and have done so for the past twenty seven years. In this unceasing production, generosity does not falter, the kind that is put at work to design books, fanzines for other authors with the Editions de la Chienne publishing house, the kind focused on transmission. My students at the ESADHaR evoke the workshop1 conceived by Jean-Jacques Tachdjian as one of the most important moments in their years at our school, because perspicacious and thorough, this strange vestige of the punk age led them to a new frontier in the typographic adventure.  Why produce at such a frenetic rate? Why this bitter struggle between solitude and nothingness (nothingness of recognition, nothingness of his ephemera- flyers). Here opens the abyss of marginality, between production and its reception (by critics in particular).

rajouterait un objet de Tachdjian dans un livre d’histoire du graphisme dans les années 1990? Il viendrait sans doute parasiter cette lignée entre le savoir-faire des Suisses et l’engagement à la Grapus, lignes parallèles rarement coupées. Les sommes historiques intercaleraient un chapitre, « En France, le mouvement punk et Jean-Jacques Tachdjian ». À nouveau, il serait isolé, même si on pourrait le rattacher à cette parenthèse déjantée qu’est Bazooka (1974-1977) ou aux Éditions du Dernier Cri à Marseille (depuis 1992). Ce chapitre ferait bafouiller l’historien(ne), glissant sur l’indiscernable, l’incontrôlable de l’underground du graphisme. Que dire d’un flyer en face d’une affiche de théâtre ou d’une signalétique de musée ? Quand bien même nous réussirions à poser des ramifications référencées, comment le graphiste, le typographe, l’illustrateur Tachdjian pourrait-il plaidoyer devant le jugement du fonctionnalisme ?

Dans l’hexagone, il est de tradition de poursuivre l’idée d’un graphisme d’utilité publique. Un graphiste responsable et garant des sacrantes institutions culturelles. Alors, ce lillois barbu avec ses fanzines et ses affiches ne rivalisant pas avec la surface Decaux, à quoi a-til contribué ? On peut lui reconnaître d’avoir attiser un vivier local.

On peut le protéger par son appartenance à la scène musicale. On peut le défendre par ses prestations d’agitateur. Quoique. Il s’avère un agitateur désabusé, non activiste. Son Petit Guide naturel et moral du graphiste en proie au doute (2003) n’a rien d’un manifeste officiel à la Adbuster ou à la Dot Dot dot2. Il a le constat assassin servi par un style apprêté, envolé mais son manifeste se double d’un pastiche, se moquant des déclarations solennelles des graphistes.

La posture de Tachdjian tiendrait-elle plus de celle du tatoueur3 que du graphiste ? Que peut prétendre son œuvre au regard de l’histoire ?

Si au moins dans ses mille et une manipulations typographiques, somptueuses et perfides, il avait crée des polices de titrages, qu’il aurait laisser gambader librement sur le toit du tri postal4, qu’il aurait confié à d’autres, mais peu de ses typographies ne s’ancrent dans la réalité, il les a emprisonnées dans ses images.

Jean-Jacques Tachdjian a innocemment tout saboté.

Un marginal s’emprisonne toujours dans sa tour de papiers.

Insidieusement, on a peut être intérêt à ce que monsieur Tachdjian reste dans les marges, dans les inclassables, car son œuvre est éprouvante : prolifique, dense, éclatée, véhémente. Elle est minée.

Non dans ses formes, mais dans son fond.

Enfouir une mine peut être une stratégie économe.

Historical accounts would add a chapter, « In France, the punk movement and Jean-Jacques Tachdjian ». Once again, he would be isolated, although he could be related to this mad parenthesis that was Bazooka (1974-1977) or to the Editions du Dernier Cri1 in Marseille (since 1992). This chapter would make the historian mumble and stumble on the indiscernible, uncontrollable aspect of the underground of graphic art. What can be said

about a flyer when compared to a theater poster or a museum sign?

Even if we were able to set the referenced ramifications, how could Tachdjian the graphic artist, the typographer, the illustrator ever defend his cause in front of the judgement of functionalism? It is traditional in France to pursue the idea of graphics as a public utility. A responsible graphic designer is the one who guarantees and is a guarantor of the sacred cultural institutions.

So this bearded guy from Lille with his fanzines and posters that don’t compete with the Decaux surface, what did he do in that sense? He can be acknowledged for having fostered local vocations. He can be protected because he belongs to the music scene. He can be defended because of his work as an agitator.

Although, he turns out being a bitter agitator, not an activist. His Petit Guide naturel

et moral du graphiste en proie au doute (2003) (moral guide of the graphic designer) has nothing to do with an official manifesto like Adbuster or Dot Dot dot1. He has a sharp judgment served by an elaborate, impetuous style but manifesto is also a

pastiche, making fun of the solemn statements of graphic designers.

Would the position of Tachdjian be closer to that of a tattoo artist2 than of a graphic designer? What can his work pretend to do in the face of history?

If at least among his thousand and one typeface manipulations, sumptuous and perfidious, he had created caption fonts that he would have let freely go on the roof of the tri postal3 , that he would have entrusted to others, but few of his typographies are anchored in reality, he has imprisoned them in his images.

les lignées historiques, les idéologies déterministes, le folklore du marginal pour examiner quelques pièces de son travail à la loupe de la lenteur. Car le soin raffiné, très travaillé, les connaissances à la base de ses typographies n’ont jamais donné lieu à une exploration détaillée.

Son affichette pour un concert de rock à la frontière belge en 1983, « bricolée avec le photocopieur du studio d’exé où je travaillais » accumule différentes strates et empreintes typographiques. Il éprouve ainsi « l’expression d’une forme de révolte envers les codes institués, l’économie visible des moyens, et un aspect improvisé ou bricolé »1 poursuivant l’irrévérence anglaise et les gestes décomplexés de Jamie Reid.

De collages subversifs en interventions libertaires, la création typographique s’insère dans toutes ses images.

Première, omniprésente, elle devient le motif essentiel du travail.

L’affiche en sérigraphie de la typo «Granulé» (P40), première police de la typothèque Radiateur, (1993) pourrait rejoindre la lignée des typographies géométrisées de Neville Brody. Le graphiste anglais insuffle à travers sa revue Fuse, des ondes de liberté via la création typographique2.

Le premier envoi (été 1991) comprend l’affiche et la typo de Phil Baines « can you (and do you want to) read me »3. Symptomatiquement, la typographie devient un espace de contrariétés. En Californie, la revue Émigré déploie et diffuse cette prise de conscience. Dans les années 1990, avec en arrière fond les bouleversements numériques, la typographie se renouvelle plastiquement et s’impose comme un espace politique. Tachdjian dessine ses typographies comme une césure, une interférence entre le contenu et le contenant, entre la lisibilité et une interprétation du texte.

En Hollande, il faut se tourner vers les créations de Max Kisman4 ou de Hard Werken, et relire l’ode de Geert Setola5 « la typo est morte, vive la typo ! » pour saisir la force des élaborations de Tachdjian. « La typographie naît, chaque jour à nouveau, du sentiment, de la pensée et de l’action du graphiste . Depuis 1993, il teste l’infime et l’infini des possibilités formelles, la partition colorée et la puissance évocatrice de ces lettres valises. Certaines de ses affiches comme Les voyages du tire laine (affiche de festival, Lille, 2004) condensent et font se heurter ses différents univers. Dès 1993 il compile ses typographies au sein de la typothèque Radiateur-fontes, mais souvent piraté, il a opté pour les placer sous Creative Commons6.

Marginality? A wandering of the mind. with historical lineages, deterministic ideologies, the folklore of the outcast to examine a few pieces of his work under the magnifying glass of slowness. Indeed, the very elaborate and refined care and the knowledge that are at the base of his typographies have never been explored in depth.

His flyer for a rock concert at the Belgian border in 1983, « tinkered with the copying machine of the studio exé where I was working » accumulates several typographic strata and imprints. He thus feels « the expression of a

form of rebellion against the instituted codes, a visible economy of resources and an improvised or adlib aspect »1 pursuing British irreverence and the

self-assured gestures of Jamie Reid.

From subversive collages to libertarian actions, typographic creation is pregnant in all of his images.

Primary, omnipresent, it becomes the essential motif of his work.

The screen printed poster of the granulated font, the first font of the Radiateur fonts library, (1993) could be in the lineage of the geometric fonts by Neville Brody. The British graphic designer communicated in his journal Fuse waves of freedom via typeset creation2. to) read me »3. Symptomatically, typography becomes a space of contrarieties. In California, the Émigré magazine develops and propagates this growing awareness. In the nineties, within a context of digital upheavals, typography renews itself plastically and becomes a political space. Tachdjian draws his typesets like a gap, an interference between the content and the container, between readability and interpretation of the text.

In Holland, you must take the creations of Max Kisman4 or of Hard Werken,

to grasp the strength of the elaborations by Tachdjian. Since 1993, he has been testing the infinitesimal and the infinity of formal possibilities, the colored score and the evocative power of the portemanteau letters. Some of his posters, such as Les voyages du tire laine (poster for the Lille festival, 2004) condense and confront his different universes. Starting in 1993 he compiles his typographies within the Radiateur typothèque library, but as it was often hacked, he chose to place them in Créative Commons .

de Ed Fella, on remarque à quel point, dans son processus de travail, il annihile l’espace entre fonction et création pure. À l’instar de l’autodidacte américain, son œuvre apparaît faussement spontanée, légère, alors qu’elle est une expérience savante, poussée. « Fella remplit des carnets entiers d’une écriture pulsionnelle et gorge ses productions imprimées de multiples couches narratives qui, si elles ne l’obligent en rien, invitent le lecteur à s’investir personnellement dans l’acte de compréhension »1. La typographie n’est jamais limpide, elle creuse une paroi avec son contenu et insinue qu’elle est un écrin bien trop sérieux pour être inoffensif. En cela Tachdjian se rapproche des recherches typographiques de Jonathan Barnbrook.

Ainsi pourrait-on lire sa fonte «Chiraquia»2.

D’ailleurs, Tachdjian préfère s’affubler du terme de « typonoclaste » que de typographe, terme qui siérait aussi au graphiste anglais.

Cette autobiographie pourrait être comparée à la Bible Barnbrook (2007), tous deux conjuguant le besoin d’exposer leur travail, comme de marteler des maximes de vies ou des (dé) règlements professionnels. Leurs mises en pages, chacune à leur manière, ne séparent rien, liant sujet, texte et images dans la même exubérance et impétuosité d’expressivité.

Tisser ces liens transnationaux et historiques permet d’établir d’autres critères de jugement.

Tachdjian est fin connaisseur3 de la typo vernaculaire, de la typo expressive, de la typo déconstruite, de la typo image, de la typo réflexive, de la typo qui ne se tait pas4.

Le lillois connaît de l’intérieur le travail de ses pairs aussi parce qu’il fait ses exercices respiratoires, typographiques, presque quotidiennement. Il les crache :

Ed Fella, we notice in his working

process to what extent he annihilates the space between function and pure creation. Like the American autodidact, his work falsely seems to be spontaneous, light, while in truth it is a knowing, extensive experience. « Fella fills notebook after

notebook with an instinctive writing and gorges his printed productions with multiple narrative layers that without being adamant, invite the reader to invest himself personally in the act of understanding»1.

Typography isn’t ever clear-cut, it digs a partition with its content and insinuates that it is much too serious a

casing to be inoffensive. In this sense, Tachdjian can be related to the typographic research by Jonathan Barnbrook. This is how his «Chiraquia»2 font could be read. And by the way, Tachdjian prefers to call himself

a « typonoclast » instead of typographer, a term that would also be a good fit for the English graphic designer. This autobiography could be compared to the Barnbrook Bible (2007), both conjugate the need to show their work and to chisel living or professional maxims. Their layout, each in its own way, do not separate anything, linking subject, text and images in the same expressive exuberance and impetuousness.

Weaving those transnational and historical links helps to come up with other criteria of judgment. Tachdjian is a fine connoisseur3 of vernacular typo, of expressive typo, of deconstructed typo, of image typo, of reflexive typo, of typo that never keeps quiet .

It’s in an issue of Émigré that I first saw work by Ed Fella and I was stunned by this freedom, he broke down the codes before many others he’s a genius and like all geniuses what he does is amazingly simple and when you find the key you feel very humble about having had a cultural mishmash that kept you from seeing that before ».

Le graphiste sert d’intercesseur au paradis de la visibilité. Auteur, quand il prend lui-même la hauteur sur la visibilité. Au fond, il est peut être là le problème, Tachdjian est un graphiste qui n’a jamais adhéré à la religion officielle du graphisme.

Les romans de Virginie Despentes entrelacent les marginaux, les personnages repoussoirs2. À coup de phrases sèches, ces détecteurs de lucidité assènent un bon sens inéluctable : « tous ces putains de packagings régressifs, ça l’agresse. Imaginer qu’il y a des mecs dans des bureaux qui ont passé des semaines entières à discuter quelles couleurs utiliser pour un pot de cornichons… toute cette intelligence, entièrement fourvoyée»3. Au détour de cette phrase, on se retrouve au gouffre, au point non négociable, non pas de l’art et de design graphique, mais au point névralgique où il faut se placer pour saisir la production de Jean-Jacques. Tachdjian a refusé un postulat de base, le graphisme comme activité structurante, qui participerait à rehausser la qualité de la vie. Il a toujours ri de la fonction « cornichon ». Il a dévié le sérieux de la fonction ailleurs. La marginalité est un instrument, elle sert à déplacer nos regards sur le monde. D’autres graphistes ont fait de même, Ed Fella, W.J. Werkman, Wolfgang Weingart…. Tachdjian peut, par sa pensée, ses processus de production, ses créations participer et prétendre influer au cœur même de cette discipline.

Le graphisme pourrait fort bien se passer de marginaux, mais pas d’agnostiques.

Tachdjian refused the basic postulate of graphics as a structuring activity that would help to enhance quality of life. He’s always laughed at the idiot pickle making function.

He chose to place the seriousness of the function elsewhere.

Marginality is a tool, it helps to change our way of looking at the world. Other graphic artists have done the same. Ed Fella, W.J. Werkman, Wolfgang Weingart…. Tachdjian can, through his thinking, his production processes, his creations participate and pretend to influence the very heart of this discipline.

Comme il est loin l’âge d’or sans argent où les ouvriers ne demandaient qu’une augmentation du nombre de litres de vin accordés par le patronat pour finir leur travail. En 1980, Johnny Rotring était de cette trempe. Pour quelques doses de speed, il faisait la maquette et les dessins de notre journal Fac-Off, sans jamais rechigner. Époque bénie où les patrons se contentaient de tout, pendant que la CGT exigeait un coup de rouge. Oui mais voilà.

Aujourd’hui La Chienne est devenue une multinationale comme les autres, machine à cash conçue pour faire tout remonter à son géniteur. Quelle horreur ! Du sperme qui se multiplie, remonte l’urètre et vient gonfler les couilles du leader, comme ailleurs.

Johnny. Décidément je préfère garder de toi l’image de la loque magnifique que tu étais. Et te laisse méditer l’aphorisme qui suit : une Chienne sans puces est-elle encore une chienne ?

Personne ne choisit le rock’n’roll. On prend le bouillon ou pas. L’ado aux longues boucles d’or à la fois timide et extraverti, dont j’ai croisé la route fin des années 70, convoitant les mêmes donzelles, quand on ne savait pas que les gagnants pouvaient en fin de compte s’avérer les perdants, avait déjà décoché sa flèche. Il gribouillait des petits mickeys au dos de ses classeurs en s’abrutissant de gros Hard Rock qui tache.

Quand les Punks sont venus, on a compris de conserve, qu’un type qui ne savait pas jouer se devait de s’improviser bassiste, car il n’y a que 4 cordes (merci saint Sid). On s’est retrouvé tous deux à brailler en s’accompagnant sur DEUX cordes, moi dans les années 80 et lui la décennie suivante car il avait des mickeys en retard... Il ne choisira d’ailleurs jamais entre mickeys et yeah-yeahs.

On a fini au 21 e siècle par jouer dans le même groupe, mais par paresse on s’est réparti la tâche: à lui la basse, à moi les hurlements (à sa décharge, lui, produisait affiches, pochettes d’albums...).

Jean-Jacques est un artiste authentiquement rock’n’roll, créateur de polices improbables, de dessins de fesses tordus et de cauchemars XXL. Il ne voit rien en petit: j’ai encore une caisse pleine de billets de banque à l’effigie des membres du groupe qu’il a imaginés quand il s’appelait Jay-Jay Ashtone... et pourtant j’en ai jeté depuis les scènes. Jean-Jacques est un pote XXL avec un cœur XXL et c’est un emmerdeur XXL aussi. Bon, maintenant il n’a plus de boucles blondes mais son gamin est sa parfaite réplique ado (Gaffe Atom, tu sais ce qui t’attend).

Jay-Jay a un appétit immense pour nourrir son immense talent. Nul doute que ce mec va laisser un gros paté sur le monde codifié des arts graphiques. Et celui qui ne veut pas le voir est probablement déjà mort, à son insu...

Nobody chooses rock’n roll. You take the dive or you don’t. The teenager with the long golden locks both shy and extroverted, who crossed my way at the end of the seventies, coveting the same chicks, when we did not know yet that the winners could turn out being the losers, had already aimed his bulleye. He would scribble small mickeys on the back of his binders while getting high on heavy Hard Rock.

When the Punks arrived, we both understood that a guy who can’t play has got to take up the bass because there are only 4 strings (thanks saint Sid). We both ended up bawling while playing TWO strings, me in the eighties and him a decade later because he had some delayed mickeys... And actually he never chose between mickeys and yeah-yeah.

We ended up in the 21st century playing in the same band, but because we’re lazy, we divided up the work: him on bass, me for the shouting (to be fair, he also produced the flyers, album covers...).

Jean-Jacques is a genuine rock’n roll artist, creator of improbable fonts, of drawings of twisted asses and XXL nightmares. Nothing’s too big for him: I still have a chest full of bank notes with the faces of the members of the band that he imagined when his name was Jay-Jay Ashtone... and yet I did throw some of them from stage. Jean-Jacques is an XXL chum with an XXL heart and he’s also a pain in the ass XXL as well. Well, he no longer has his golden locks but his kid is his perfect teen replica (Watch out Atom, you know what’s waiting for you).

Jay-Jay has got a huge appetite to feed his huge talent. No doubt that this dude will leave a big smudge on the codified world of graphic arts. And the one who doesn’t want to see it is probably already dead, unwittingly...
