Auteur et photographe, on lui doit « Un piéton à Los Angeles » édité par La Chienne et le Centre Pompidou ainsi que les catalogues : « Peter Klasen, la mémoire du regard », « Les orchidées de Bernard Rancillac », « Les Effets Secondaires de Philippe Huart »…

Commissaire d’exposition, il a réalisé la rétrospective Ladislas Kijno au Palais des Beaux Arts de Lille, divers exposition avec la Galerie Nicholas Treadwell de Londres ainsi que l’exposition « Ménage à Trois » (Robert Williams, Jean-Jacques Tachdjian, Jonathon Rosen) à la Galerie Overtones de Los Angeles.

Il collabore à des documentaires et comédies avec les réalisateurs Peter Alton (« Les Superficiales », « Nose », « Wanda Coleman »), Juan Lozano (Peter Klasen, Bill Viola, Gérard Schlosser) et le compositeur Christophe Chassol (« Nola Darling : les fanfares de New Orleans », « Jean-Clause Casadesus : Animal Conductor »).

Avec Roxanne Frias, Renaud anime l’émission « Amis d’en France » sur la chaîne de télévision Voyage.

Grand admirateur d’Ed Fella depuis plus de 20 ans, c’est sous forme d’hommage qu’il a conçu ce livre.

Edward Fella est un artiste dont l’influence sur la typographie contemporaine est considérable.

Graphiste publicitaire pendant trente ans à Detroit, diplomé de la Cranbrook Academy of art en 1987, il continue de publier ses flyers aux typographies les plus extravagantes, inspirées du vernaculaire et du postmodernisme.

Avec son polaroïd à travers tous les Etats-Unis, «

il compile des images de pancartes publicitaires, d’écritures, de panneaux signalétiques.

De cette matière brute tirée des sources indigène et nationale, il invente un style d’écriture où l’erreur manuelle, la faute d’espace… trouvées au hasard de ses pérégrinations sont posées comme règles.

Edward Fella is an artist whose influence on contemporary printmaking is considerable.

Advertising graphic designer for thirty years in Detroit, graduated from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1987, he continues to publish his flyers with the most extravagant printmaking, inspired by vernacular and postmodernism.

On the road with his Polaroid across all U.S., he compiles images of billboards, writings, signs, and markings.

From this raw material derived from indigenous and domestic sources, he invented a style of writing where the manual error, the lack of space... randomly found during his wanderings are posed as rules.

Ed talks a lot. The interview began at 11 am, continued over lunch at the CalArts cafeteria, resumed in his studio up to 5:00 p.m., and extended onto the gardens of the university. Sitting on a bench until nightfall, he enlightened me on his work marked by eclecticism as well as Fluxus. It offers a portrait of North America as insightful as that of Tomas Pynchon in novels, or Robert Frank, in photography... No wonder he occupies a prominent place in Jean-Jacques' pantheon! While showing the Master the interview published in the January 2007 issue of Etapes, I also showed him some lettering by Jean-Jacques and he looked at them with great interest, seeing in him one of his disciples.

This nonmercantile vision of the profession is challenged with a false cynicism smiling in “The little natural and moral graphic guide of the graphic designer beset by doubt,” where Jean-Jacques recalls that: “The graphic designer needs to recycle fresh ideas to trivialize them and transform them into selling points for popular products.”

This is not the primary creed of his two designers!

Print makers, artists, writers believe mostly on the expressiveness of words, the colored strength of the lines and images they explode so that the book or poster does not remain a single focus field.

Among them, everything but the kitchen sink must be saved!

In each image, letter, smudge, drawing, the Arabesques of an original letterpress whose reading exacerbates the fluctuations of fantasies and knowledge coil up.

The chaotic page is yet controlled when it calls for the illumination of images and words.

Here, words have a heart; they expand, buzz, scratch new references, and argue that for these two artists the whole world is an inkhorn.
