IMAGINE IT! 2024
Our Story What are dreams made of? Needs, ideas, sometimes a random thought and very often learning that there is more available than we can readily see. That is how EPF was born…a God given mission to our President, Linda Bronson. This dream of doing something different for the needy families has been maturing over the last 3 years and has now grown into passion that won’t stop generating movement. Today we are at the edge of our next important step. We have already taken a few giant steps toward making EPF an organization that is strong and has all the elements needed to become a working force for improving the lives of the needy in our area. Among those movements was becoming a 501c3 nonprofit registered in the US. Then we commenced with our first training session for 8 families, placing 1 qualified family on a monthly stipend, then we established our banking relationships and now we are heading slowly but surely toward getting recognized as a nonprofit in Panama. For a young organization with very little funding, those were big accomplishments. Not bragging, just acknowledging the power of what comes from support from the community. Now, we are about to embark on the biggest and most important element. Land acquisition will set the starting point for growing our first Fenix Community. This is a small community of 3 or 4 families in houses built on our land. It will not be 1, 2, 3 go. We are having extensive conversations with our lawyer and the other professionals needed to accomplish this task. First, we have to find suitable and affordable land, assess its preconstruction needs and costs, before we move to purchase. Then we will get architectural documents prepared, then there are approximately 6 different government entities to which we must petition for permits. When we are at that place, it will be necessary to establish how the community will operate on a day to day basis. Needless to say, the work ahead is vitally important to the success of the project. And, we intend to pursue each step with vigor and determination to make sure all details are in perfect order. All the while, we will be seeking financial support from a variety of sources. Obviously, all of this from start to finish cannot be accomplished overnight and will require time and funding. We sincerely hope you will be able to assist. Building communities where people can live better lives and have the ability to raise their children in a clean and healthy environment is a necessity for the overall well-being of Panama.
Tonight’s Speaker Dr. Leticia Thomas, our keynote speaker, received the prestigious Cecil Haynes Presidential Grand Medal of Merit in May 2024, recognizing her significant contributions to social, political, and cultural activism. A native Panamanian, she serves as the Coordinator of the Afro-Panamanian Forum (Panamanians Abroad/Panameños en el Exterior), an organization dedicated to promoting a discrimination-free society. Fluent in Spanish, English, and French, Dr. Thomas also has communicative proficiency in Italian and Mandarin Chinese. She holds multiple advanced degrees, including a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from New York University. With a background in socio-linguistics, Dr. Thomas has delved into sociology and cultural studies; areas of expertise that align with EPF’s mission and goals! We are excited to welcome her to share her perspective of the work ahead for El Proyecto Fenix.

The Silent Auction
The El Proyecto Fenix board and volunteers have been working around the clock to obtain and curate an amazing array of items for this Silent Auction. The next four (4) pages have brief descriptions and photos of the items. We welcome you to view the auction tables to see the items. We hope you will find something you like!
Guidelines 1. Follow the guidelines and have fun! 2. All sales are final. There can be no exchanges, refunds or substitutions. 3. Bid only if you intend to pay. Payment by the successful bidder must occur tonight. Winning bidders will receive a bid slip to take to the banker. Fulfillment of the auction items will be made after payment. 4. All sales are non-transferable and are not redeemable for cash, unless otherwise specified. 5. The Fair Market Value (FMV) of each item has been estimated by the donor. The donor’s estimated value of merchandise and services is provided for informational purposes only and is not a result of any appraisals or surveys performed by El Proyecto Fenix., Inc. 6. By participating in the auction, all buyers agree to the following: a) Buyers are purchasing goods and services in “as is” condition, b) El Proyecto Fenix., Inc. assumes no liability for injuries to buyers arising from the purchase or use of any auction items. 7. All bidders should have name and telephone number printed clearly on a bid sheet. 8. All items must have minimum bids and minimum bid increases which are noted on the bid sheets. If a minimum bid is not met, the item remains the property of El Proyecto Fenix, Inc. If a minimum bid increase is not met, the previous bid will be honored. 9. Items will be awarded to the highest, eligible bidder. 10. Bidding will close at the times specified. El Proyecto Fenix., Inc. representatives working the auction tables are the sole judges of whether or not a bid was timely made on a bid sheet.
Auction Bidding Guide There are 39 silent auction items available for bidding tonight. They include art and decor, gifts, books, jewelry, clothing, and more! Review items listed on the following pages and view each item in person on the floor. Pay careful attention of the closing times for each section. EPF is Changing Lives This is a heart warming story that exhibits not only the need, but the grit and determination of the individuals and families affiliated with EPF. One of our class graduates, Vanessa Cobo Pozo, recently was offered a position in a local hotel. There was only one thing keeping her from accepting. She contacted EPF to see if and how they could help her. As you all know, EPF is about teaching people self-sufficiency and not receiving handouts. After a brief discussion with the board, it was decided to assist Vanessa with earning the funds she needed for her work permit. Your paragraph text
Vanessa was eager to go to work and we quickly found small volunteer opportunities she could do in her spare time to accomplish what she needed. Success! Vanessa got her permit and her job which she is happily performing. Her pride shows in this photo. With EPF's help, she Vanessa Cobo Pozo found a way to reach her goal. We are very proud of Vanessa for her eagerness to work on her goal until it was accomplished. Congratulations Vanessa!

The Mentions Congratulations on all you have accomplished in the last 3 years. The future of EPF is in capable hands and will accomplish much more. Really looking forward to seeing the 2025 year unfold with all its magic. ~ Monica & Maurice Milton
I have seen first-hand the dedication Linda and Ruth have when it comes to EPF. Their devotion to the project is commendable, especially because it is such a daunting endeavor. I am pulling for you and wishing the best in the coming year and beyond.
Best wishes to you ladies and the organization you are running. What you are hoping to achieve is major (elevating lives and changing mentalities). I know you will not give up until it is done. The coming year should prove to be an exceptional year for EPF.
My congratulations to Linda and Ruth on undertaking such a major project. It is not easy changing mindsets and it takes special people to do so. I wish you the best and hope you get the deserved support for what you are attempting to do.
~ Bailie Milton
~ Bryce Milton
The caring and love you show to everything you do through EPF is inspiring. I believe you will accomplish greater things than you even expect. I am rooting for you and the families that have placed their trust in you and the project.
Many good wishes coming your way. Linda and Ruth are focused on making change happen. Not an easy thing under any circumstances, but I believe they can and will prevail. I offer my support and hope others will too. You need all of it and more.
~ Justin McCray
~ Essentia Rivera
We are involved with EPF, Patrick as the resident agent and Dr. Cannon facilitating their recent annual retreat. Linda and Ruth want their organization to be an exceptional nonprofit corporation. It has been a pleasure seeing the growth and achievements made over the past year. We wish them all the best in the coming year. ~ Patrick & Dr. Lisa Cannon
As business women, we know how much it takes to run a business and do it well. We give Linda and Ruth kudos for the work they are doing in Panamà. It is hard to make change happen and even harder to change mindsets. The task is daunting and you are doing it daily with God’s grace backing you all the way. ~ Tina Armstrong & Monica Milton

I see first-hand how hard the board works to do good for those in need. I wish them great success in 2025.

Maria Fiction Maria always felt that life was what it was and there was little if anything she could do about it. She tried her best to not indulge in dreaming about anything different and maintained an attitude as positive as she could. Her circumstances were not getting better. Her eldest child who was nearing 6, was a result of what she considered her lot in life. Then he was followed by 2 more and she felt the best she could do was to try and care for them with her meager means. Daydreaming was a waste of time and energy which she did not have to invest. So, she plodded along, fully accepting her life as it was on a daily basis. One day Maria was surprised to hear a neighbor having a discussion with another woman and was immediately wanting to let her know that what she talked about did not exist for the likes of them. This woman was talking about some organization that was interested in bettering the lives of her community and doing so in a different way. She heard snatches of the conversation…they believe in self-sustainability…they train you…it is free to participate…they won’t be giving you any handouts. She thought there is no way that this is true. But she admitted her excitement grew as she thought about such a thing. What impact could this organization have on her family? Would she be eligible to participate? Was this happening right in her neighborhood? How could she find out more about this? After a few days Maria made it a point to find the woman who was talking about this so she could get more information. The woman was happy to share with her, not only more information about the workings of the organization, but also who to call to get involved. Dreaming became a reality for her. She began thinking about what she needed to make her life better…a decent place to live…training that might get her worthwhile employment…she could learn how to manage her resources better…and she could help her children get into better opportunities as they matured. Suddenly her world was much brighter, and she could not contain her excitement. She made the call, was interviewed to see if in fact the program could help her and indeed they could. They explained that the program was definitely not the run of the mill handout program and that she would be held accountable to meet the requirements along the way. They told her it was a way to make a mentality change and that she would have to start thinking differently about herself and her family. They were willing to help her explore her own potential and not be lulled into thinking there was nothing better for them. Fast forward2 years. Maria has attended all the training, she now has a resume she can give to potential employers and is receiving a monthly stipend which is really making her life easier. And, in a short time, since she is eligible for the housing program as well, she will be able to move her family into a decent house with electricity and running water. One never knows what one might hear in passing. Maria was in the right place at the right time to learn about this wonderful gift. She is now telling other families she encounters about the program that doesn’t hand out goodies but makes a huge difference in giving them a better life!
