BAKERSFIELD, CA - Este martes, 23 de enero, la galería “Retrato de un Guerrero” (Portrait of a Warrior en inglés) patrocinó la develación del retrato a lápiz del ex infante de marina y alguacil, Phillip Campas, que murió el 25 de julio del 2021 al ser herido a muerte cuando trataba de rescatar a tres personas de otra que se había barricado en una residencia en la comunidad de Wasco. La comunidad se reunió en la intersección de las calles 20 y Eye en el centro de Bakersfield el martes pasado para desearle un feliz cumpleaños a Phillip Jesse Campas. El ayudante del alguacil y veterano del Cuerpo de Marines habría cumplido 38 años. Los profesores del sistema universitario público más grande del país acordaron poner fin a su histórica huelga contra el sistema de la Universidad Estatal de California el lunes por la noche. El sindicato de profesores, que representa a más de 29,000 profesores, conferencistas, bibliotecarios y entrenadores, acordó un aumento salarial general del 5% retroactivo al 1 de julio de 2023 y un aumento salarial general del 5% el 1 de julio de 2024, siempre y cuando el estado no reduzca la financiación base de Cal State este verano. El lunes fue el primer día de una huelga prevista de una semana. Los casi 450.000 estudiantes del sistema vieron muchas de sus clases canceladas debido a las protestas de los profesores. Sin embargo, el nuevo acuerdo significa que todos los profesores regresarán a los campus y a sus clases el martes.

BAKERSFIELD, CA – Este pasado lunes, se llevó a cabo una pequeña ceremonia en la Biblioteca Baker donde los concejales Andrae Gonzáles y Eric Arias, junto con la supervisora de 5º Distrito, Leticia Pérez y el supervisor del 2º Distrito Jeff Flores, anunciaron la propuesta de la asociación entre el Condado de Kern y la Ciudad de Bakersfield para apoyar al sistema bibliotecario de Kern, En un comentario hecho por el concejal Eric Arias en su página de Facebook, él dijo que, por medio de esta asociación, la ciudad puede apoyar a varias bibliotecas, incluyendo a la biblioteca HollowayGonzalez en lo que era el viejo

En el tercer cumpleaños después de su fallecimiento, su imagen fue añadida a la Galería de Retratos de un Guerrero, con docenas de imágenes que muestran que no ha sido olvidado. Campas fue honorado este pasado martes 23 de enero, en el estacionamiento ubicado enfrente de la galería con un retrato hecho a lápiz, el cual fue develado al público en una ceremonia que tomó lugar a la 1 pm. Sus padres y esposa rodeados de familiares con camisetas de color verde militar con la bandera americana y con el nombre de “Phillip Campas Proyect”. Alrededor de ellos, miembros del servicio militar y de la comisaria del Condado de Kern, todos en silencio, en su forma homeneajando al oficial caído. Entre los oradores se encontraban la senadora estatal Sharon Grove, la alcaldesa Karen Goh, y el comisario del Condado de Kern, Donny Youngblood. “Siempre, siempre recordaremos a Phillip”, dijo la alcaldesa Karen Goh. “En las redes sociales él fue elevado como un héroe, un amigo fantástico, bondadoso, un gran infante de marina, cometido a su familia y siempre dispuesto a ayudar a su comunidad, él fue un gigante de hombre”. Goh continuó diciendo que no existen las palabras suficientes para realmente enseñar el espíritu de Phillip Campa. Goh peleaba las lágrimas mientras seguía su oratoria, la familia de Campa atentos y sollozando. Los retratos en esta sala son hechos con lápices de grafito, que es un medio diferente al tradicional uso de colores en otras partes de la galería. En una entrevista con los medios locales, la cofundadora de la galería Lili Marsh dijo que el lema de la galería es “Siempre Recordados, Nunca Olvidados”. Ella agregó que la galería es “un lugar de reverencia y honor donde se puede ver que en el Condado de Kern nunca olvidamos los sacrificios hechos por nuestros seres queridos”. En el 2008 fue embarcado a Afganistán donde estuvo por 9 meses como artillero. En el 2010, se graduó como instructor y asignado a la estación de Perris Island donde dio adiestramiento por los próximos tres años. Campas fue liberado honorablemente de su servicio militar en el 2015, mudándose con su familia a Bakersfield y graduándose de la academia de policía de la Comisaria del Condado de Kern. En el 2016, él fue oficialmente contratado por la organización como alguacil donde obtuvo varias posiciones, tales como miembro del equipo SWAT, patrullero, miembro de la guardia de honor, instructor de educación física, y entrenador de reclutas, entre varios. Durante su tiempo libre, Campas donaba su tiempo como instructor en la organización de los jóvenes infantes de marina “Devil Pups” donde hizo un impacto muy grande a la juventud local. “El era un hombre muy chistoso, muy energético, disciplinario con sus hijos y de educar a sus hijos con el orgullo que obtuvo de sus padres” dijo su tía Connie McNally. 2 reciben cadena perpetua por homicidio en gasolinera Un hombre y una mujer fueron convictos de homicidio en primer grado en lo que fue un tiroteo en una gasolinera de Bakersfield, fueron sentenciados a cadena perpetua en prisión. El juez rechazó los argumentos de la defensa por un término menor, determinando que ambos posan un serio riesgo a la comunidad. Los acusados, identificados como Joseph Baker, 22, y Erica González, 27, fueron sentenciados a más de 40 años a cadena perpetua por haber matado a Angel Bowdey, 24, durante una pelea en la gasolinera On the Go ubicada en el River Boulevard. Antes de ser sentenciados, varios miembros de la familia de Bowdey hablaron con emoción sobre la pérdida de su ser querido. La madre de Bowdey, Lawanna Lockhart, dijo que ella necesita trabajar constantemente para evitar sobre emocionarse. Lockhart dijo que ella perdona, pero tiene esperanzas de que Baker y González pasen el resto de sus vidas detrás de las rejas. l primer partido profesional de softbol femenil se vivirá este jueves 25 de enero en el Estadio Mobil Super, donde Sultanes recibirá al Águila del Veracruz. Todo lo que ocurra en este encuentro será histórico, como el primer out, el primer ponche, el primer hit, etc.

LA MARCA DE ASISTENCIA Aunque existen otras sedes donde se vivirá el softbol profesional, Sultanes apunta a imponer el récord de asistencia este jueves, ya que hasta el momento se han vendido 9 mil boletos para el día inaugural. Además, los abonados de Sultanes varonil podrán tener acceso gratuito, por lo

que se prevé habrá una gran entrada a estos encuentros, en una temporada que será breve. Serán 24 partidos de la temporada, 12 de local y 12 de visita; por lo que rápido los equipos buscarán los buenos resultados para clasificar a los playoffs. Se medirán dependiendo las posiciones en las que finalicen: el cuatro contra el uno y dos contra el tercero. Los ganadores avanzan a la Final, y ambas series serán a ganar tres de cinco encuentros. Los formularios de inscripción y los documentos requeridos están disponibles en línea en https://www. bgckc.org/summerjobsprogram. El portal de inscripción cierra el viernes 16 de febrero de 2024. La capacitación de preparación para la fuerza laboral se llevará a cabo desde el 26 de febrero de 2024 hasta el 10 de mayo de 2024 en el Centro Juvenil E.L. Jack y Monica Armstrong localizado en 801 Niles Street, Bakersfield en eleste de Bakersfield, y los adolescentes asistirán un día a la semana a partir de las 5:00 p.m. p.m. a 6:30 p.m. Al finalizar la capacitación, los

participantes tendrán la oportunidad de realizar una pasantía remunerada con empleadores locales como parte del Programa de Empleos de Verano desde el 10 de junio de 2024 hasta el 12 de julio de 2024.
