Late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning an active shooter went into a western themed bar in Thousand Oaks and opened fire on a crowd on “College Night” killing 12 people and injuring more than 25. Among the deceased includes local college students, Ventura County Sargent Ron Helus, and the shooter. Calls of the active shooter came in around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday evening, Sgt. Helus was one of the first responders on the scene entering the bar at 11:26 p.m. where he was met by gunfire from the shooter. He later succumbed to his wounds in the hospital passing early Thursday morning. The shooter has been identified as 28- year-old former Marine, Ian David

Long, who was a resident of Newbury Park, California. Reports came in that Long entered the bar and started to throw smoke bombs and didn’t say a word as he opened fire on the crowd. It was reported that he went from each area of the bar firing as many rounds as possible and changed the gun magazine at least twice. Officials found out that Long was posting to social media during the shooting. It has been confirmed that the gun used was a legally-purchased Glock 21 .45-caliber handgun and had a magazine modification. The modification made it possible for the magazine to hold more rounds, which is illegal in California. The Borderline Bar and Grill hosts a college night every Wednesday for the colleges in the area, a long popular tradition. Colleges include Cal State Channel Islands, Cal Lutheran, Pepperdine University, and Moorpark College. In a press interview Sheriff Geoff Dean stated that this wasn’t the first time that Long had a run in with authorities, with reports as

recent as April. “Back in April authorities were called out to his home for a complaint of disturbing the peace, Deputies at the time said he was being irate and acting irrationally,” Dean also included that Long was tested for mental health issues after this but it was concluded that he did not need to be taken into custody. A neighbor told CNN that the suspect’s mother “lived in fear” of what her son might do because he did not pursue mental help and said, “it took them about a half a day to get him out of the house.” Long took his own life after the SWAT team had arrived but it is believed that a mental health illness was the main contributor to his decision to carry out this horrific act. Many of the nearby colleges and universities have closed their campuses for Thursday and have a full staff of grief counselors on hand for students that are seeking help. The true motive of the shooting has yet to be uncovered. Witness Tim Dominguez gave an emotional interview to ABC 7 with a heavy heart

as he recounted the events after the gunman entered the bar. Dominguez said that he has been going to the bar for 16 years but usually didn’t attended on college night, but his 26 year old son said he had wanted to go. Dominguez said he heard the shots and the bouncer fall, and he took cover with his son as they witnessed the gunman shoot into a crowd of people on the dance floor, “He shot quick, and he was good at it. It looked like he knew what he was doing.” Sheriff Dean described the scene to the press saying it was one of the most gruesome things he had scene, saying there was blood everywhere. Families flooded to the scene in search of loved ones unable to get a hold of them through their cell phones or close friends some have since be reunited. Thousand Oaks teen center has opened up it’s doors and is acting as a family reunification center, but as the hours go on many of the families and loved ones of the missing have started to lose hope. Jason Coffman, the father of the still missing Cody

Coffman, was sent to the teen center waiting for news on his son. Jason spoke to CNN. Jason tracked Cody’s phone with an app and it showed that the phone is still at the club. “We got woken up last night around 1:00 in the morning by some of the girls Cody’s friends, knocking on our door saying that there was a mass shooting at Borderline. Some of his girlfriends got out. But they didn’t know where Cody was. I’m sure he was there helping, shielding anybody that he could. I’m hoping that he is ok,” said Jason, “[His phone] is there. It’s not moving, that’s the problem. His phone is at the club.” Cody Coffman was one of the 13 victims at the shooting, Jason said he was preparing to start a military career. The Borderline Bar and Grill shooting is the 304th shooting this year, and the second largest in 2018 just behind the mass shooting that killed 17 in Parkland Florida back in April, and not even two weeks after the shooting in Pennsylvania where 11 people died.

Brush Fire Turns Devastating

PHOTO CORTESY: ABC NEWS Thousands of homes evauated as Woolsey fire spreads through the hills of Southern California. DIANA JUAREZ

MANAGING EDITOR diana.juarez8805@my.riohondo.edu

What started off as a brushfire near Simi Valley Thursday Nov. 8th soon turned into a raging inferno that has consumed 91,572 acres, destroyed 370 structures, and forced about 250,000 people out of their homes. With two confirmed deaths and only 20 percent containment, the Woolsey fire is ravaging cities across Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered through Malibu, Westlake Village, Calabasas, and Agoura Hills as the Santa Ana winds and dry vegetation feed the blazes. Officials confirmed that the two bodies found in Malibu were caused by the fire and urge those that have evacuated to not return. Malibu City Council member Jefferson Wagner was hospitalized after sustaining burns trying to save his home. Wagner is expected to make a full recovery, but his home did not survive the flames. Pacific Coast Highway was

shut down in the wake of the raging fire. People fled from their homes, many with only the clothes on their backs. L.A. County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said that “This is the sixth year of...drought in this region. Our firefighters have been facing some extreme, tough fire conditions that they said that they’ve’ never seen in their lives.” Ventura County Chief Mark Lawrenson spoke at a press conference and said “Maybe 10 or 20 years ago you were able to stay at your home and protect it…things are not the way they were 10 years ago…the rate of spread is exponentially more than it used to be, please heed evacuation warnings. Do not stay in your homes to try and defend them…Please do not put your lives at risk.“ Three-quarters of the city of Thousand Oaks, which is still mourning the deaths of a dozen people that were murdered at the Borderline Bar & Grill mass shooting, was under evacuation orders. Firefighters have struggled all weekend to get the blaze under control as gusts of up to 50 mph from the Santa Ana

winds blew burning embers in all directions. With resources scarce due to the fires burning across the state, firefighters have not been able to keep up with the speed in which the flames are growing. Butte County in Northern California has been ravaged by the Campfire that has taken the lives of over 31 people, some of whom died in their cars as they tried to escape. Authorities are working on plans to go back into the disaster area to recover and identify the bodies of those that died in the Camp Fire. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea is gathering a team of coroners to go into the burned areas and use a DNA lab truck to help with the recovery. The entire town of Paradise, along with a total of 113,000 acres were turned to ash and as many as 220 people are missing including two newspaper workers. David Little, editor of the Chico Enterprise-Record and Oroville Mercury-Register tweeted, “…Our missing employees aren’t more important than anyone else’s

– but they’re ours, so I’m trying. I hope they and all the other missing people are safe, hunkered down somewhere.” President Donald Trump took to twitter Friday night to criticize the way California manages its forests, saying “There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!” President Trump’s words did not go overlooked and the president of the California Professional Firefighters Brian K. Rice replied with the following: “The president’s message attacking California and threatening to withhold aid to the victims of the cataclysmic fires is ill-informed, ill-timed and demeaning to those who are suffering as well as the men and women on the front lines…The president’s assertion that California’s forest management policies are to blame for catastrophic

wildfire is dangerously wrong. Wildfires are sparked and spread not only in forested areas but in populated areas and open fields fueled by parched vegetation, high winds, low humidity and geography. Moreover, nearly 60 percent of California forests are under federal management, and another two-thirds under private control. It is the federal government that has chosen to divert resources away from forest management, not California.” After heavy criticism from politicians and first responders, President Trump issued a state of emergency for California and will be provided federal funding to assist firefighters in combating the fires. Utility companies are investigating the cause of the fires due to the fact that an electrical circuit went down 2 minutes before the Woolsey Fire broke out. No official statement has been released on probable cause, but officials say there is no toxic risk after an old nuclear site burned down.

A Room of Sanctuary in Rio’s Violence Intervention Program ERIKA SUAREZ

LIFESTYLES erika.suarez7619@my.riohondo.edu

Domestic abuse advocate, Oralia Alcorta spread awareness on domestic violence in relationships at the Tech Quad in Room 143 this past Nov. 7th. Guided by purple hearts on the floor that led to the VIP (Violence Intervention Program), where sensitive topics were discussed. The event was hosted by Manuela Plascencia and Rosario Gonzalez, Program Assistant at Rio Hondo College. With an audience of five, Rosario introduces Alcorta and describes her as a “role model” and an asset to survivors of domestic violence. Oralia Alcorta is a mother of six kids and student at Whittier College working on

her bachelors in Sociology. She missed one of her classes to share her story and encounter with domestic abuse. “the physical goes away; the pain goes away. Yeah, the scars go away but the verbal, the mental, the emotional, all that plays a big part in somebody. Like my self-esteem, who I was and how I felt about myself, he [her abuser] took all that. I was not the same person at all.” When Alcorta returned to continue her education at Rio Hondo, she was aided by EOPS & Care where she was led to a scholarship event. She shared and condensed her life in 900 words and won first place, receiving a scholarship of $2,500. At that moment, she said she broke the chains of her shame and past. “If someone can believe in me, then I can

believe in myself,” she says. Once, walked with her head low, she now aims high. She believes her story is a motive and anyone can break free of their adversity. Booming with eagerness, she says, “You take control of your life, so when I started taking control of my life, I realized I was not racing with anybody.” “I stopped giving myself a deadline.” Before, she had a set time of when she would complete her education, but later realized she was going to meet her destination on her own pace. Teary eyes were noticed in the room. Her courage and voice certainly uplifted many. Alcorta’s next move is to run a nonprofit organization that provides a one stop resource center for women with children who are going

through hardships and abuse. Rosario Gonzalez, single parent of two children shares her story as well. Alcorta was the person she was able to turn when she faced difficulties. “Oralia had just all the answers that I needed and all the connections… she helped me without question and literally everything she had… she is the reason why I’m here.” said Gonzalez. Gonzalez navigates the Violence Intervention Program on campus, where she wants to open doors to students and lend a hand for them to reach onto. “Not a lot of people want to come into a domestic violence workshop or want to talk about it,” said Gonzalez. But the outcome is walking away with knowledge of the matter. After a small break, the

students are welcomed by Jose Hatem, Outreach Specialist for Project Sister Family Services. He emphasizes the red flags to search for in every type of relationship on a powerpoint. “Personally, I hate doing presentations, it’s not my thing. I would rather have a conversation,” says Hatem. He touched on delicate issues such as emotional and sexual abuse, yet lightening the mood with the phrases, “shook” and “all fly’d up.” Jackie Hernandez, EOPS intern at Rio Hondo says she gained plenty from coming to the workshop. In regard to the women who spoke, “their experiences don’t identify them…despite all the challenges they went through, they blossomed,” says Hernandez.

First Generation Event at Rio Hondo ANAMARIA APARICIO Reporter

anamaria.aparicio8532@my.riohondo.edu

A First Generation event took place November 7, 2018 at Rio Hondo in the lower quad area. These even was for all the first generation students at Rio Hondo who have had trouble applying and navigating their way through college. This event was organized by Talani Solia, the chair of Student Success for Associated Students (ASRHC). Solia stated that the idea behind First Generation was about, “I know Rio Hondo’s majority of students are first generation students so I wanted to focus on that. I just wanted to know what’s their reason for coming to Rio Hondo or why they’re the first in their family. So

I kinda just wanted to focus on that because many people don’t really like focus on First generation students, Especially the struggles they go through.” ASRHC had five different booths throughout the quad with different activities. One booth was called “What I’m Thankful for,” students were able to go up and write what they were thankful for and stick it to the poster. “Why I’m First” was a name of a booth where students were able to answer why they are the first in their family. Another booth was called “Snacks and Facts.” Students here were able to get a snack and read facts about first generation students. “Something I wish my parents knew” was a booth dedicated to students writing what they hoped their parents knew about

college as a first generation student. Lastly there was a booth called “Take a note, leave a note”. Students here were able to randomly pick an inspirational note and in return write their own for someone else to pick. Rio Hondo Student, Marissa Ramirez, stated about the event that, “I say it’s beneficial just because clearly when you go into a new environment everybody is scared and like when they don’t feel welcomed doing events like this makes other students feel welcomed.” There was also other booths that helped acknowledge the schools resources that some student might not know of. Resources like E.O.P.&S/ C.A.R.E, Transfer office, Guardian Scholars, and First Year Success.

The Associated Student of Rio Hondo College (ASRHC) will be hosting a free Friendsgiving event for the students of Rio Hondo this upcoming Monday November 19th at 5pm6:30pm in the Campus Inn. This Friendsgiving event also took place last year by

Martin Covarrubias, last year’s ASRHC President. Diana Lopez Coordinator of this year’s event stated “it was a HUGE success we decided to do it this year. I’m really hoping it becomes a tradition for AS because it’s an opportunity to bring us together as a community.” This gives ASRHC the opportunity to provide a Thanksgiving meal for the students who aren’t otherwise able to be with

their families and eat a meal with them, Lopez claims. This is such a special event that is being provided to the students that Lopez goes on to say, “Seeing students happy and thankful for this event is probably the best part of it all!” Some may be curious as to where the budget is coming from for such event. Diana Lopez Coordinator states that it is “coming from every task force budget, and

from our ICC (Inter-Club Council) hospitality budget.” ASRHC is in collaboration with the ICC this year for the first time for this event. Last year’s event only had ASRHC handling the event. The ICC is in charge of supporting club activities on campus and helping the experience for the students, faculty, and the staff. This collaboration between the two organizations makes perfect sense to improve the

event’s details, and support for better funding for the event itself. For the time being, the Rio Café is in charge of the catering, while they are still working out details for the event. Students are encouraged to attend this event as to build a better relationship within students to gather and just have a space to be thankful.

General Joseph Dunford Says Military Will Not Be Involved in Stopping Migrants JARBAS FARIA

Reporter jarbas.faria1559@my.riohondo.edu

General Joseph Dunford said Monday that the US military will not be “involved in the actual mission of denying people entry to the United States.” Dunford said he will not get close or deny people who are close to the border. “There is no plan for US military forces to be involved in the actual mission of denying people entry to the United States,” Dunford said, speaking at an event at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. “There is no plan for soldiers to come in contact with immigrants or to reinforce Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as they’re conducting their mission.” President Donald Trump deployed 5,239 troops to the southern border to guard against what he has called

an “invasion” by a group of migrants heading north through Mexico to the United States. Despite Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that the group of Central American migrants includes “gang members and some very bad people,” most of the migrants reportedly plan to apply for asylum once they arrive at the border, following legal procedures. Veterans at the Rio Hondo college veterans center made comments about General Dunford’s words. Two currently enrolled sergeants approved and support General Dunford’s decision. Both sergeants migrated from other countries at a young age, one of them migrated from Mexico and agrees with Dunford actions because he feel everyone should be given an opportunity and that exactly what General Dunford is doing. Regardless of personal

opinion, federal law limits what these deployed troops can actually do at the border. In accordance with Posse Comitatus Act, a 19th century federal law, the military is restricted from engaging in law enforcement on American soil. Among those deployed are military police and combat engineers, all of whom will be working alongside National Guard troops. The Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment (CSBA) has estiamated that it will cost the US Government anywhere between $112 to $143 per troop per day during what has been officially named Operation Faithful Patriot. The caravan, which will take weeks to arrive, has already dwindled since it was firs reported. Many asylum seekers have applied for refugee status in Mexico while others accepted a free bus ride back home.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is the Closest Spacecraft to the Sun DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter

danielle.anzures8473@my.riohondo.edu

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has survived its first trial by fire. The craft got within 15 million miles of the sun’s surface November 5 which is closer than any mission has gotten before. Two days later the probed phoned home to tell controllers it was in good health and continuing to collect data. “Parker Solar Probe was designed to take care of itself and its precious payload during this close approach, with no control from us on Earth — and now we know it succeeded,” said, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at agency headquarters in Washington, D.C., Thomas Zurbuchen. “Parker is the culmination of six decades of scientific progress,” Zurbuchen added. “Now, we have realized humanity’s first close visit to our star, which will have implications not just here on Earth, but for a deeper understanding of our universe.” The probe also got to the sun the quickest. Leaving on its original run from October 31 to November 5, they

craft put out 213,200 mph in relation to the sun according to NASA officials. Before this, the record holder went to The German-American Helios 2 mission which happened in April 1976, that probe got within 26.55 million miles of the sun at a speed of 153,454 mph.

It’s predicted that the Parker Solar Probe will break their own record many times in the next seven years to come. During that span, the craft will make an additional 23 flybys and get closer to our star. By late 2025 the probe should be within 3.83 million

miles of the sun’s surface and the speed should be at 430,000 mph, due to sun’s gravity accelerating it, according to NASA officials. The mission was launched on August 12 at a cost of $1.5 billion with the plan of giving scientist a better understanding of the

sun’s activity, composition, and structure. The main questions the NASA mission should answer are why is the sun’s outer atmosphere, also known as the corona, hotter than the surface; and how do solar winds get accelerated to such high speeds.

2017 Earthquake Cracked IGNACIO CERVANTES Sports Editor

ignacio.cervantes8813@my.riohondo.edu

A gargantuan release of energy in Oaxaca, Mexico September of 2017 that caused an earthquake of 8.2 magnitude was revealed to have cracked a tectonic plate in the North American country. The entire slab beneath the megathrust region called Coco’s ocean plate was ruptured the moment the Tehuantepec Earthquake hit. Scientist believe that seawater could have been what caused the split as the cooling liquid caused the mantle to reduce in temperature quickly. “Our findings suggest that young oceanic lithosphere is brittle to greater depths than previously assumed and that rupture is facilitated by wholesale deviatoric tension in the subducted slab, possibly due

to fluid infiltration.” said the people from Nature Geoscience. A scientific journal that conducted the research which revealed the crack. What this means is that this scary, yet amazing tremor went around 90 kilometers deep underground, through the crust and mantle and the whole of Coco’s plate was split in two. The same plate did the damage in 1985 for over 10,000 deaths in the Mexico City earthquake and Rio Hondo geology professor Michael Forrest explained his concerns following the shake in Tehuantepec last year. “This usually doesn’t happen,” Forrest said, “That’s an amazing quake. Actually when I first heard about the quake I was more worried about the death toll - sadly about 100 people died. In the 1985 Mexico City quake 10,000 or more died. Thank god the Chiapas Quake,

which was bigger, didn’t occur closer to any population centers.” According to Forrest, in the immediate aftermath of the big quake, the stresses can be felt even thousands of miles away from the epicenter. But, despite the colossal hit, the dangers of this earthquake insinuating any action in the faults around Southern California has passed. But the Southern San Andreas Fault has yet to rupture in over 330 years and, according to the Southern California Earthquake Center, most faults in California are locked and loaded. “Some of the computer modeling that’s been done on it [San Andreas Fault], suggest that if it unzips from south to north some of the greatest shaking in Southern California will be focused here in Whittier Narrows.” Forrest said. Brazil’s New President to Open Rainforest for Logging and Mining DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter

danielle.anzures8473@my.riohondo.edu

The newly elected President in Brazil plans to open the Amazon rainforest to logging and mining and that’s concerning, to say the least. Jair Bolsonaro was elected October 28, many critics called him a fascist, yet he won with 55 percent of valid votes. Through his campaign, he promised to fix Brazil’s economy and to end corruption. He has also said some homophobic, misogynist, xenophobic, and racist remarks; he also advocated jailing political opponents, he has held Brazil’s former military dictatorship in high regard. And similar to America’s own president has said he would like to pull out of the Paris climate accords and he does not believe in global warming, though he has retracted the first statement according to Vogue. But one promise that scared most environmentalists is Bolsnaro promise to open the Amazon rainforest to Brazil’s lobbies agriculture business. And now with Bolsnaro’s election scientist are facing for that promise to

come through. Before this election, Brazil has been one of the recognizable global faces fighting climate change. Around 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest lies within its borders. However as most of Bolsonaro’s backing has come from political factions who want to use the land mining, ranching, and logging they lobby for the decreased protection of the rural lands. Bolsonaro during his campaign criticized the protection of the lands and called it “excessive.” His plans would make regulations of lands more hard to enforce. Both scientist and researchers fear that this move would turn into a ‘gold rush’ of sorts with multiple companies rushing in to make a profit. This would not only ruin the environment but displace indigenous communities living in the forest. If Bolsonaro’s plans are to go through the results would be catastrophic and irreversible, the ecosystem would be destroyed and the people of the lands displaced with no way to fix it. And while Bolsonaro would like to continue to deny the effects of global warming he cannot deny

what will happen to Brazil because of his actions. According to the Brazil 2040 report created by Dilma Rousseff administration in 2015, it predicted a significant decrease of rainfall in the eastern Amazon by 2040. This report also predicted the northeastern Brazil’s destruction which has already had droughts that drove out migrants as reported by YaleEnvironment360. If rain decreases long term this can force a large group of people who work in agriculture to move to the Amazon over tens of millions of them. This would result in even more deforestation. And if Brazil were to leave the Paris Agreement this would be very bad in the effort to contain global warming. Projects that would result in deforestation, like highways, would be allowed to go on. Researchers from Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria predict that if Bolsonaro’s plans go through the deforestation rate in the Amazon would rise to level 268 percent above the 2017 rate. If Bolsonaro goes through with his plan the results

PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY RAMON ALVARADO Brazil’s Amazon jungle deforestation rate will skyrocket if the country’s newly elected leader, Jair Bolsonaro pulls through with his plan to open it.

would only grow. Even during his 2018 campaign, it had gone up to 36 percent when compared to the previous year. The only thing that might stop Bolsonaro is the public reaction if buyers of Brazil’s products were to put

restrictions on Brazil this may help the situation. Also if Bolsaonaro sees that his plans can cause the destruction of the agriculture business he might pull back. All we can watch and wait to see if Brazil acknowledges the problems that can arise.

Coffee May Protect Against Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s BETSY SEGURA Reporter

betsy.segura4835@my.riohondo.edu

To many people, coffee is life: it brightens mornings, helps us go through the day, and keeps us up all through the night during those late night study sessions. But did you know that it could protect against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease? According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that causes memory loss as well as behavioral issues and problems with thinking for oneself. The symptoms develop slowly but gradually worsen over time. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s but there are treatments for the symptoms to slow down the development. Coffee, or rather caffeine, has a couple of benefits to Alzheimer’s patients. One is delaying the onset of Alzhei-

mer’s by blocking inflammation in the brain, specifically the adenosine receptors where the mind’s cognitive decline begins. A study done by the University of California proved coffee boosts brain function and memory by giving a few of their patients caffeine pills. The next day, those who took caffeine and those who didn’t be shown similar, but not identical images that they were shown the day before. They were also shown images they had seen and hadn’t seen. Those who took the caffeine pill did significantly better than those who didn’t. Mayo Clinic defines Parkinson’s disease as a progressive nervous system disorder that affects one’s movements. Symptoms tend to begin with a slight tremor in one hand, gradually worsening to stiffness or slower movement. The Krembil Brain Institute, part of the Krembil Research

Institute wanted to know if coffee could delay more than Alzheimer’s and Dementia. They knew coffee played a huge role in their studies, but what piqued their interest was which type of roast played a major key. See, decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee both had similar potencies had similar potencies in the initial testings. Roasting coffee leads to higher amounts of phenylindanes- a compound that prevents two protein fragments from clumping. The two proteins are found in both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease patients. When Dr. Donald Weaver, Co-director of the Krembil Brain Institute, was questioned with the possibility of coffee being a cure, he replied, “Absolutely not.” Though the knowledge of another cup of Joe delaying both diseases may ease one’s mind.

RAMON ALVARADO/EPM Coffee is already a part of many people’s daily lives. Now we may know it has some major benefits.

Stan “The Man” Lee Passes at 95

IMAGE VIA BLEEDING COOL JAIME APARICIO A&E Editor

November 12, 2018 is a sorrowful day that many Marvel Comics fans will remember. The comic book community mourns the passing of one it’s most influential minds, Stan Lee who passed away early Monday morning at the age of 95. Lee was taken to CedarsSinal Medical Center where, later, he passed away with the cause of death not known at

the time. Before legally changing his name to Stan Lee, he was referred to by his birth name Stanley Martin Lieber. Throughout his years working at Marvel Comics, Lee helped co-create some of the most recognizable names in the superhero genre. Creations such as SpiderMan, The X-Men, Daredevil, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange all formed on the comic pages at Marvel with the help of Lee’s imagination. With

another legendary name in the comic book community, Lee along with Jack Kirby created what is now known as Marvel’s first family, The Fantastic Four. Lee’s presence transcended beyond the comic pages with him making cameos throughout various programming and films that delved into pop culture topics. One of his recent appearances can be seen in Insomniac’s latest release Spider-Man for the Playstation 4 where he’s

seen talking to the character Peter Parker. Directors such as Kevin Smith have also featured Lee in one of his past films Mallrats, a film that deals with a lot of comic book lingo and shenanigans. But it is in the Marvel Studios films that Lee can be seen making his most memorable cameos to date, some of which have him interacting with the heroes themselves. A notable cameo from Avengers: Age of Ultron has Lee attempting to drink an aged liquor with Thor and

Steve Rogers. Stan Lee’s accomplishments throughout the entire Marvel universe is nothing short of amazing and spectacular. His popularity is further cemented with him receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame January 4, 2011. Whether you disagreed with his views or his line or work, there’s no denying that Stan Lee was a lovable human being who contributed greatly in many childhoods. He will surely be missed. Excelsior!

When it comes to the accomplishments of Nathan Johnson, most anime fans would point to the composers’ work on Dragon Ball Z. Most would say Johnson has made some amazing scores for the dubbed episodes and a movie related to the iconic anime. But now Johnson has scored a new accomplishment by adding state Senator to his resume. During the 2018 midterms, Johnson managed to nab the Senator title in

Texas. Johnson beat out the incumbent, Republican Don Huffines with 54 percent of the vote. Of course, Johnson didn’t go into the race with no experience. Along with being a composer, Johnson was a lawyer by trade and graduated from the University of Texas with a law degree before he joined the Dragon Ball Z family. Johnson’s time working with Dragon Ball Z’s principles have influenced his political ideology. “One of the things that are comparable to my political philosophy is that

in Dragon Ball you have episodes that deal with a set of very different kinds of people—sometimes different species and people from other planets—but they have to work together,” Johnson said according to comic book.com. “Sometimes we find that a person who was formally your opposition is now your ally. Through show after show and various movies you see how unlikely combinations of personalities and abilities come together to fight a common threat,” Johnson continued. When running for the race Johnson said he felt that

his work on Dragon Ball Z would help his chances when running for office. “Dragon Ball Z fans are concentrated in the millennial age group. And it forms close to a third of this electorate. Their turnout is historically poor. But they’re getting older, starting to have mortgages, and starting to become more aware of politics. They’re a passionate generation and care about certain topics,” Johnson stressed. “The fans are the kind of people who like to look at issues in a non-black-and-white way. A more nuanced approach to

the world. More interested in different viewpoints. So I have no doubt that if they pay attention to this, they’ll want to get [current senator] Don Huffines out and get me in there. I’m counting on it.” Turns out his thought process was correct and he scored a win for Democrats in Texas. And while Johnson did not work on Dragon Ball Super: Broly, he still takes pride in that part of his life and even included it on his campaign site.

Super Mario Bros. Animated Movie Moving Forward

IMAGE VIA IGN Not wanting to repeat past mistakes, Illumination Entertainment will attempt to properly portray the infamous plumber on the bigscreen. With original creator Shigeru Miyamoto overlooking the project, the development team at Illumination want to asure fans of the Mario franchise that the animated film will stay true while making sure the film itself is structurely sound.

Let’s face it, the 1993 American fantasy adventure film based on the game “Super Mario Bros.” is a flop. But what would you say if this time the movie would

be an animated film done by Illumination Entertainment? Illumination Entertainment founder Chris Meledandri has produced “Despicable Me,” “Sing,” “The Secret Life of Pets,” and currently “The Grinch”- he is no stranger to animated films.

Meledandri has also taken the proper approach by working closely with the game creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, something the 1993 film failed to do. Miyamoto is both designer and producer responsible for creating the addicting game.

“We are keeping him front and center in the creation of this film,” Meledandri said of Miyamoto’s role in the making of the film. Hollywood has an infamous history of believing their own adaptations are better than

the creator’s and Meledandri has admitted to making that mistake before, but he assures us that it will not be made twice. To create a story, to add depth to a thing so thin in its original form is a skill itself for a difficult task. One of his key collaborators happens to be Pharrell Williams, a pop star musician who provided music for the animated film “Despicable Me.” Williams and Meledandri have been discussing an original animated film “from scratch.” “What I love about Chris is he doesn’t make you feel like you’re just being hired to do something. He gives you a seat at the table.” The pop star said of Meledandri. “Super Mario Bros.” is currently in “priority development” at Illumination now that “The Grinch” is in theaters. The new Nintendo film could be in theaters by 2022.

anamaria.aparicio8532@my.riohondo.edu

Jorge Gutierrez, director of the animated film “The Book of Life,” is now the creator, writer, and director of a new animated series for Netflix called, “Maya and The Three.” Gutierrez describes this series as the Mexican version of Lord of The Rings. According to GeekTyrant, “The story is set in a “mythical Mesoamerican inspired world, a warrior princess embarks on a quest to recruit three legendary fighters to help save the world of men and gods.”

This animated series is set to release in 2021 and is being co-written with the help of Silvia Olivas and Jeff Ranjo. Olivas was a screenwriter for “Elena of Avatar” and Ranjo was story artist for “Moana.” This show will have a total of nine episodes. According to Remezclas, Gutierrez describes this show as, “ Maya and the Three as a humorous “Mexican Lord of the Rings,” starring a female superhero who is half human and “half divine.” The director acknowledges that the fantasy genre is heavily male-driven and says, “this

is my attempt to provide an awesome female hero.” But, this show is only one of the six new animated series coming out starting 2019 up to 2021. In 2019, “Go!Go! Cory Carson,” will be released. This series is based on the hit toy line Go! Go! Smart Wheels from VTech Electronics, “Go! Go! Cory Carson” follows the adventures of kid car Cory Carson as he navigates the winding roads of childhood in Bumperton Hills. This 2020, animated series “Kid Cosmic,” “Trash Truck,” and The

Willoughbys” will be released. “Kid Cosmic” is a show about a young boy who dreams of becoming a hero, and when he stumbles across some cosmic stones of power his dreams appear to have come true. “Trash Truck” is about a six year old boy named Hank who is a free-range, dirt-covered boy with a big imagination and has a best friend that happens to be a trash truck. “The Willoughbys” is about four brothers and when the four Willoughby children are abandoned by their parents, they must learn how

to adapt their old-fashioned values to the present world in order to create a new and modern family. In 2021, Netflix will have animated series “Maya and The Three” and “My Father’s Dragon”. According to Deadline, “My Father’s Dragon” is about, “ A young run-away Elmer Elevator, who searches for a captive Dragon on Wild Island and finds much more than he could ever have anticipated.”

Easy Recipes to Make For Friendsgiving BETSY SEGURA Reporter

betsy.segura4835@my.riohondo.edu

You have been invited to a Friendsgiving party but you have no idea what to bring. My friends, it is in the title itself. Friendsgiving is the celebration of Thanksgiving dinner, but you can decide how to celebrate it with friends. Now, some people celebrate it on Wednesday but others prefer to celebrate on Friday and heat up the leftovers. Let’s say you don’t have leftovers? What can you cook up for your Friendsgiving? Scalloped potatoes with sautéed mushrooms, cream cheese, and panko crust. The name alone is mouth watering and might impress your friends. But really, it’s sautéed mushrooms in mashed potatoes for a new twist. The cream cheese keeps it creamy, while the panko crust (literally, breadcrumbs) gives it a crunch you didn’t know

Friendsgiving is a valuable day for sharing the food you made with friends. you needed. Brussels sprouts, the vegetable we refuse to eat even though we know it’s good for us. Lucky for you we found a recipe of Roasted Brussels Sprouts mixed with cranberries and crunchy pecans that are a must.

The dish has a nutty, savory taste which is a compliment by the texture of the pecan. The cranberries are a traditional touch, but also add a hint of sweetness to it. Cognac Cranberry Sauce, definitely not grandma’s recipe. If it is, that is one

cool Nana. This cranberry sauce is made with four easy ingredients: cranberries for fall, brown sugar for sweetness, orange juice to balance it, and a fairly healthy dose of Cognac. If you don’t like cranberry sauce on your food, this would make the

perfect starter for a fruity beverage. An additional tip is you can substitute the cognac for your alcohol of choice. Mashed Sweet Potatoes and Butternut Squash are often a substitute for mashed potatoes in many households. We have two recipes for you starting off with Maple Orange Mashed Sweet Potatoes. Simply boil, mash, add milk and butter, then the finishing touches. Orange juice gives it a zesty taste and maple syrup sweetens it, but don’t forget to spice it with cinnamon! For our Butternut Squash lovers, cut it up in bite-sized cubes, roast in a pan with olive oil, garlic, and rosemary. Roast until the squash is tender and the juices caramelize. Voila! One more dish out of the way. Whatever you decide to do on Thanksgiving day, or how you decide to celebrate it, El Paisano wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours.

Playlists That Will Put You in Study Mode BETSY SEGURA Reporter

Midterms are finally over, but finals are slowly creeping in. While studying, restless students tend to pop in their earbuds to mute out inevitable distractions. You may think it helps, but what happens when your favorite jam comes up and you can’t help but hum to the beat? Now you’re fully distracted and the idea of studying is in the back of your mind. Pick a playlist free of lyrics on spotify. When you listen to music with lyrics, your mind is competing for memory space. Remember that you’re studying, so you need to soak up and retain as much information as possible. Spotify is currently shining it’s spotlight on seven playlists created just for studying without lyrics. First, we have Intense Studying created by Spotify. The playlist is a mix of sonatas, concertos, and music that may relax you to the point of sleep. Though the songs are actually meant to relax you, your body and mind. A few pieces with upbeat tempos are snuck in to keep you on your toes, to stay awake, and keep your brain sharp and focused. Next, we have Superior Study Playlist created by Taylor Diem. The

Protein Shakes to Consider As a College Student BETSY SEGURA Reporter

betsy.segura4835@my.riohondo.edu

Hardcore weightlifters come to mind when it comes to pre-workouts or postworkout protein shakes, but what exactly are they? Protein shakes are made with protein powders. Typically whey, soy, and casein. What it does to your body depends entirely on the protein powder you buy. It could help with weight loss, muscle growth, and can even be a substitute for proteins your body is lacking. But if there are three proteins and multiple outcomes, which one is the right fit? According to Medical News Today, milk consists of two proteins, casein, and whey. Whey can be separated from casein as it is considered a complete protein. Complete proteins contain all nine essential amino acids that are required to build and repair protein tissues in the body. Though it is found in milk, whey protein is low in lactose content. Possible benefits include weight loss, lower cholesterol, reduce weight loss in people

diagnosed with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension, and lower the risk of developing heart disease. Soy protein powders may be the best choice for vegans. They get their protein without breaking their diets. But it isn’t their only choice. Rice, pea, and hemp proteins are available as well. Rice protein is the perfect substitute for those who don’t consume dairy products. It’s also gluten-free. Pea protein is economical (cheap) and hypo-allergenic. While hemp protein is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids while being 100 percent plant-based. Soy protein helps reduce high cholesterol and may ease menopause symptoms for some women. Which aids in building bone mass for osteoporosis pavtients. Casein protein is a slowdigesting protein, opposite of whey and is a fast-digesting protein. Casein protein shakes are recommended to be taken post-workout, during the day to keep you full in between meals, or at night so your muscles work on absorbing

History of Beauty With M.A.C Cosmetics ARLINE CHAIDEZ Reporter

arline.chaidez0556@my.riohondo.edu

MAC Cosmetics is well known for their wide range of beauty products. It was founded by makeup artist Frank Angelo and a photographer Frank Toskan. Both talents became frustrated by how awful most makeup looked in photos. In 1984, the two beauty salon owners began creating makeup in their own kitchen and sold it in there small hair salon. This created a wonderful long lasting makeup brand now known as M.A.C Cosmetics. The business quickly escalated with the help of people spreading the word on the streets. Keep in mind, social media was unknown at the time. It all started with makeup artists, models, photographers and later, stylist and editors. Information about M.A.C spread fairly quickly and the outcome was a success. So the artists decided to launch the line in a single counter department store in Toronto. The launch was staffed with professional makeup artists, which was never before seen in the industry. As far as the packaging, it stood out as a very “chic

utility.” Instead of using compacts they used black pots. After a photo shoot with Madonna at the New York Cabaret, the intense red lipstick she used became very popular and the revolution continued on. While other makeup brands were trying to focus on skincare, M.A.C decided to establish itself as an ultimate color authority. The company left the industry in shock when they began to offer a wide range of products that attracted people with street style and glamor. M.A.C was also the first cosmetic store in history to invest in their employees by educating them as far as makeup and sales point of few. Instead of having sales like a gift with purchase promotion, M.A.C relied on their integrity of it’s carefully formulated product line. AIDS spread across the globe in 1994 and M.A.C’S co-founders responded to the epidemic. After many fundraisers like “Viva Glam,” “Kids Helping Kids Greeting Cards,” and with the help of celebrities, entertainment, and fashion industries the fund was inaugurated. The company holds

Relationships with professional artists and award-winning products did not go unnoticed by the cosmetic industry. Estee Lauder purchased a percentage of M.A.C in 1995. Extending the brand’s distribution across the globe. The freestanding store opened at a very rapid pace. M.A.C began working

backstage at international fashion collections To this day M.A.C continues to evolve as a company and a cosmetics brand. Including an ongoing satisfaction for the needs of its customers. The company’s ongoing development brings exciting and new products. With funds such as M.A.C AIDS and the “Heart and Soul.”

The company also takes part in animal-free testing. According to the companies’ website, “M.A.C does not test on animals. We do not own any animal testing facilities and we never ask others to test on animals for us.” With that being said, M.A.C is still well known and continues to surround us with new and unique styles.

A Sophomore’s Delight Photos by Michael Martinez

Tuesday, Nov. 6, women’s soccer celebrated its second-year players in a game against Pasadena. A 6-1 win capped off the regular season home careers of eight student-athletes ready for another SoCal Regioanls Nov. 17.

Clockwise starting top: Eight sophomore Roadrunners played thier final regular season home game against Pasadena Tuesday. Freshman forward Hailee Morales (no. 15) aims toward the goal in attempts to put the Lady Roadrunners ahead early in the second half. Freshman forward Zharria Ramirez (no. 9) collects a pass and takes directions from freshman defender Karina Banda (no. 16) on where her next move should be. Ramirez enjoyed lots of time on the ball against the Lancers which held no chance in the relentness fight from Rio.

Rio Women’s Volleyball Look to End on Bright Note MICHAEL KHURAIBET Reporter

michael.khuraibet1864@my.riohondo.edu

The Rio Hondo women’s volleyball team began November with two away games at Chaffey College and Pasadena City College.

After losing to both teams early last month, the Lady Roadrunners lost with an even wider margin the second time against Chaffey while their rematch against PCC ended 3-0 again. With a game record of 6-16 overall, it’s been a rough

season for the Lady Roadrunners. And with a 1-6 record in the South Coast Conference-North, it looks like this will be the second-to-last game of the season. The team has one regular season match left tomorrow against East Los Angeles

College on the road and sophomore defensive specialist Madelyn Gastelum mentioned how important the team has been to her over her two seasons with head coach Teddo Esko and the Lady Roadrunners. “She [Esko] cares about

the ups and downs that we face in our personal life as well and I really appreciate that too” Gastelum said. It’ll be the final game of the year at ELAC for a young squad who will be hungry to improve over the offseason.

SPORTS Ready For Regionals CHRISTIAN SALINAS Reporter

christian.salinas2108@my.riohondo.edu

Friday, Nov. 9, the Rio Hondo Roadrunners women’s soccer team traveled to Chaffey College to take on the Panthers for the second time this season. Rio previously lost to Chaffey and were looking to exact revenge this time. It was the last game of the regular season and the Roadrunners wanted to end on a high note. Unfortunately, they were unable to capture their 12th victory and fell to the Panthers 2-1. The Roadrunners were trying to spoil Chaffey’s Sophomore day, but it was to no avail as the offense didn’t get anything started until it was too late. The ball spent most of its time in Rio’s end as the Panthers were executing early. The Roadrunners seem to lack some drive in the beginning of the game which cost them overall. Jennifer Tanaka, the Roadrunners head coach, said postgame that “we need to play more determined and battle harder.” They played solid defense but with the Panthers controlling the time of possession and keeping the ball away from Rio, their defense could only hold up for so long as the Panthers got more chances at the net in the first. Sophomore goalkeeper Izellia Delgadillo made a phenomenal save early and sophomore Flor Suarez actually saved a goal on a put back and kept the score tied. Karina Banda, a sophomore defenseman, played inspiring defense as she was putting her body on the line and laying out to keep the Panthers out of the net. As hard as Rio’s defense played, it just wasn’t enough. Angel Garcia, a freshman forward for the Panthers, broke through in the first as she scored on a cross. Down 1-0 in the first, Rio needed their offense to finally step up. They had a few chances towards the latter part of the first but were eventually shutout in the first half. As the game got wore on, so did the intensity and physicality. It eventually turned into chippiness as there were some questionable calls from the referees. Most of the calls were in Chaffey’s favor as the Roadrunners got two cards. A yellow on the goalkeeper, and a red for assistant coach Will Lopez. When Chaffey went up 2-0 early in the second on a goal from freshman defenseman Ivy Vollaire, Rio was in panic mode. But after Marissa Morales got tripped in the box, things were starting

to look up for Rio as they were awarded a penalty kick. Viviana Ramirez, a freshman defenseman, was tasked to take the shot. When it hit the left post and failed to go in, it was the beginning of the end for Rio. Freshman midfielder Jacqueline Gonzalez was finally able to break through for Rio as she scored their first goal of the game to make it 2-1. Time wore on but the Roadrunners couldn’t equalize. They were not able to complete the comeback losing their third game of the season. That loss should have playoff implications in terms of seeding. However, on Tuesday, Nov. 13, there is a state seeding meeting. As of right now, with the standings in the CCCAA, the game should be on Saturday, Nov. 17 and the time is to be determined.

SoCal Regionals Schedule With the regular season

of the six teams participating in fall leagues coming to an end, there will be two of the teams participating in Southern California Regionals begining Saturday, Nov. 17. The men’s and women’s soccer teams have both managed to claim their spots in the postseason to represent the Roadrunners in the nexy round. At 11-3-5 overall, the women’s team goes into the seeding meetings as no. 7 in Southern California. The meetings which determine who plays who were held today after the release of this issue. What’s guaranteed is that a seventh spot in the region should mean the women’s side will be the host for the first round. “We are looking forward to playing on Saturday and know that every team is good in playoffs. We’ll focus on training all week to prepare for our game. On Saturday, we have to put our best in from the beginning, do the little things and have fun competing.” Head coach Jennifer Tanaka said. The men’s team, coached by Orlando Brenes, will also feature in the postseason festivities with a home game looking possible as well. 10-4-3 overall the Roadrunners defeated conference winners Mt. San Antonio in their first meeting with the Mouties winning the grudge match which ultimitely seperated their rankings. Expect the men to also play at home on Saturday.

BASKETBALL RETURNS The Rio Hondo men’s basketball team tipped off its 2018-2019 home schedule and prepare for South Coast Conference play with a non-conference matchup against Mt. San Jacinto. MADELYN GASTELUM Reporter

madelyn.gastelum1526@my.riohondo.edu

Friday, Nov. 9, Rio Hondo men’s basketball lost 86-73 to the Mt San. Jacinto College Eagles at their preseason home opener. Rio Hondo had a strong start in the first half trailing the Eagles by only 10 points at halfime. Mt. San Jacinto College opened the game and ran a full court press on Rio Hondo utilizing it to slow the Roadrunner’s offense and push for turnovers which they quickly converted to points on the scoreboard. Roadrunner sophomore guard Jonathan Martinez led the hosts in scoring, putting up 18 points while shooting 75 percent from the free throw line. The Roadrunners tried to fight back against the Eagles but their defense struggled to keep up with the quick ball handling skills that their opponent brought to the table. Mt. San Jacinto managed to break into the paint and pick apart the Roadrunner defense with a majority of points scored inside the key. Leading Rio Hondo with rebounds was sophomore forward Uziel Felix who gathered 9 boards throughout the game. Almost reaching double-digits, Felix was able to give the Roadrunner offense the opportunity to convert his rebounds to points and slow the game play by spreading out the players that jammed the paint. Starting up the second half the Roadrunners came

out with a new fire as freshman guard Tysan Harris scored the first points from a fast break layup off a steal. With 12 minutes left in the game Rio struggled to catch up as the Eagles lead by 20 at 59-39. Sophomore guard Elijah McCoy tried to close the gap for the team by scoring 2 out ot 5 3-point attempts but it was slim. Though Rio Hondo worked hard they couldn’t manage to keep up with the

fast transitioning that San Jacinto’s offense and defense brought to the table, the second half closed out with the Eagles putting up 46 points on the board while Rio missed the mark scoring 43. The game closed out with the Roadrunners down by 13 points, but they look forward to their second home game against the Santa Ana College Dons tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 14. Tip-off is set for 5 pm.

Wednesday, Nov.7 the Rio Hondo wrestling squad had a home meet against Palomar College. Coming into the match 0-1 as a team, the Roadrunners looked to get it together after a 34-13 loss to Cerritos College Oct. 25. Palomar came into this match with a team record of 1-0 with an impressive victory over Mt. San Antonio College 39-6. The match started with two 125-pound wrestlers on the mat. Rio Hondo and Palomar split the first two duals then Rio Hondo went down a slope - losing three out of the next four. Palomar seemed to gain control of the match from the start with consecutive impressive wins.

As the match progressed, Rio Hondo gained confidence and climbed there way back on the scorecards. The final match was an impressive one as Ruben Martinez, a 285 pounder, brought the Roadrunners back into the meet with impressive takedowns and pins which added to the score tremendously. Down 8 points with 2 matches to go, Rio Hondo

won the last 2 duals to bring their score to 27. Rio came close but the final surge was not enough to trump Palomar’s 28 tallies. Rio falls to 0-2 as a team and Palomar rises to 2-0 this season. Next match for Rio Hondo is the East Los Angeles College Brawl Tournament Nov.17 where they will try to gain their confidence back and go into that match with high expectations.
