io Hondo has welcomed a new Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Don Miller. Dr. Don Miller grew up all over the United States. During his high school years, he went to school in the bay area. At the age of 5, he would go to his classroom,during lunch, to learn Spanish from his teacher(NAME). Since then, he fell in love with the language and the different Hispanic cultures. At the age of nineteen, he moved to Chile, where he would spend most of his time in Osorno and Puerto Montt. During his time in Chile,

he would work alongside the farmworkers and was able to understand the culture of Chile on a personal level. Dr. Miller had also (lived abroad in another Spanish country) and as he would also live in Spain for a year when he was thirty years old. Dr. Miller went to the University of Virginia from 1995 to 1998, where he would graduate with a Ph.D. in Spanish Language and Literature. He then became a Spanish professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he taught Spanish language, literature, and culture for two years. Later on, he was a Spanish professor at Cal State University of Chico for six years, where he taught both undergraduate and graduate

courses. During his final year at Chico, he was the Associate Professor and Chair at Cal State University of Chico, where he supervised the beginning and intermediate language programs and adjusted faculty. From August 2006 to January 2018, he was the Chair at Modern and Classical languages at the University of St. Thomas. During his time there, he would budget, employee evaluation, supervision of forty-five faculty, staff, and student employees from twenty countries and ten different languages. Dr. Miller had also participated in the International Student Scholarship Committee and the Courtesy of Markelle Stansell Annual Evaluation Guidelines Committees. He had also led Rio Hondo’s Vice President of Academic Affairs Don Miller’s portrait, curiosity of Markelle Stansell and designed study abroad

courses in Latin countries, including Mexico, Cuba, and Argentina. At the same time working for the University of St. Thomas, Dr. Miller was

becoming the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Rio Hondo, Dr. Miller was the Vice President of Instruction at College of Alameda for just a little over three years. Dr. Don Miller has had plenty of experience with college education and continues to help every student as he possibly can. Before choosing Rio Hondo College, he had many other opportunities, but he felt working at Rio Hondo College was the best choice. Rio Hondo has eighty percent of Hispanic and Latino students; given his prior knowledge of the Hispanic culture and being fluent in Spanish, he feels comfortable serving students in this community. His goal is to be a helping hand to all students, no matter the situation.

“I have an open door if a student wants to stop by; all of us are here to help in any way to have success.” also the Dean of Academic Services for Arts, Letters, and Social Studies at Las Positas College.
