mission Elmwood Franklin is a school that emphasizes high academic achievement, good study skills and positive character development. We set high standards for each child with whom we work, then give support to enable him/her to meet these expectations. We expect our students throughout their years here to achieve success in becoming selfmotivated and in assuming responsibility for their actions. The early years of education are crucial in an individual’s life. Our role is to provide each student with the basic skills to learn effectively and the fundamental elements of knowledge which will become the foundation of all subsequent learning. Learning how to learn, developing an enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge and cultivating a lively curiosity during these years sets a life-long
pattern of sound attitudes. At Elmwood Franklin, we value an atmosphere of genuine respect and courtesy between student and student, adult and student and adult and adult. We not only set a positive tone to support our students but also, we encourage faculty, administration and staff throughout their time at Elmwood Franklin to develop themselves professionally with financial assistance from the school. the headmaster Thank you very much for your generous support last year for our children, for our teachers, and for our mission, now 117 years old. At the school, we are most proud of last year’s giving participation level. Almost all of our groups’ participation rates grew. Any school in the country would be proud of an 83 percent parental participation rate. Those of us who work and volunteer here understand the financial sacrifices it takes these days to provide an 2
independent school education to children. We are moved by all those in the Elmwood Franklin community who believe that young children and early adolescents deserve a premier educational environment and are willing to share resources to ensure that our school can provide such a setting. This upcoming year, the teachers and administrators and I will be encouraging the children to make

lives. In a similar way, Elmwood Franklin as an institution must make informed and deliberate decisions, for we are in the process of shaping a new strategic plan. In Aristotle’s sense of “ethical,” strategic planning is indeed an example of ethical activity. While we are proud of what we have achieved in the last eight years, it would not be ethical to just look back and beam. Our community must peer ahead

Time, whose movement is so easily measured (by years, days, hours, and the like) and tracked (by birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones), can also be very hard to accept. When I look at my children as the years pass by, I am amazed to see young women when it seems like just yesterday they were little girls. I am still looking for lower school students when I am now confronted with eighth graders. As impossible as this may seem, I also find great contentment in what I now see: two young people who have been nurtured, pushed and inspired to be all that they are capable of being in this world. I see two human beings who have been provided the necessary tools for a lifetime of learning and, even more importantly, have been taught how to treat other people with the respect and empathy that will make our entire world a better place. I feel so fortunate that my family has been able to participate in the Elmwood Franklin experience for the past nine years. For over 100 years, Elmwood Franklin 4
has provided a strong foundation for students, families and all of Western New York. Thank you to all members of the Elmwood Franklin family, from the administration to the faculty to the student body and their families, for allowing me to serve as the board chair. What could be more important and rewarding to a parent than being involved in the world in which our children exist for most of the day? Elmwood Franklin will continue to face challenges as time marches forward, but I am confident that the love and cooperative spirit that exists within the very essence of EFS will lead it to new and exciting places. Enrollment continued to climb this year, with opening day hosting 378 students. Admitting fifty-nine new students to the EFS family placed the school at maximum capacity. Our student body remains evenly split, consisting approximately of 50% of families that reside within the city limits of Buffalo and 50% from outlying areas. Twenty-nine students were placed in a waiting pool at the end of the admissions season.

Ninety-six students received a total of $574,619 in tuition assistance (25% of enrollment). Of the total amount of tuition assistance awarded, $45,600 was given to new students entering the school and the remaining $529,019 was awarded to families already a part of the school community. 6
parent alumni council council The Parent Council serves as a support group to the school and as a resource for all members of the school community. It also plans educational and social events. All parents or guardians of students attending the school are members and are encouraged to participate. At each grade level there are parent representatives who support class activities. Through the year the Parent Council sponsors fundraising initiatives such as the book fair, box tops sales, the ice cream social, and the fall family picnic.

The Alumni Council continued its work to develop, maintain, and strengthen the relationship between Elmwood Franklin School and its alumni. Two new events were held this year: a breakfast for alumni who are also parents of current EFS students, and another for alumni who are grandparents of current EFS students. Both were well-attended, and served as a great way for alums to re-connect, reminisce, and offer their unique insights to the council and the school. The Alumni Council is working on creating more and more ways for alums to stay involved — with new endeavors and events that aren’t just about fundraising, but about maintaining meaningful relationships. We at EFS are indebted to these dedicated alumni for their committed efforts on behalf of our school. Annual Fund chairs Grace Walsh Munschauer ’70, Archie Glick ’71, and Alison Keane, and their committee of dedicated volunteers set a new record in EFS annual fund history by raising $263,752.
Success! It’s what our teachers foster, what our students aim for, and what our donors make possible. This year’s Annual Fund was an unparalleled success. We are thrilled to announce that, through the hard work of campaign co-chairs Archie Glick ’71, Alison Keane, and Grace Walsh Munschauer ’70 and their volunteer committee, the campaign has surpassed its goal and set a new record in terms of total dollars raised. The overwhelming dedication of our community is 8
apparent in the hard numbers: over the past five years, Annual Fund giving has increased in amount by nearly 75 percent. Faculty/staff participation, again at 100 percent this year, has more than doubled in five years; alumni participation has risen from eight percent to 20 percent; and parent participation has grown from 64 percent to an unprecedented 83 percent. Our most sincere thanks are given to the many individuals listed in this report for their generosity—your bountiful support is what enables the success of Elmwood Franklin School.

l. nelson hopkins, jr. 1916-2005
Nels Hopkins will always be remembered—by his family, by his friends and associates, and by the numerous community institutions that benefited from his generosity and devotion. Elmwood Franklin School is honored to have had such a compassionate man and unassuming leader working on behalf of our mission. A dedicated member of the Elmwood Franklin Corporation, Nels was a former member of the EFS Board of Trustees, serving as board president from 1969 to 1971. A life long Buffalonian, he was president of the mechanical contracting company John W. Danforth Co., from which he retired as chairman in 1991. 26
Nels is survived by his wife Jane, their son Dr. L. Nelson III (Bonnie Adam Hopkins ’57), their daughters Robin Amper and Jane Carey ’71, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. At Elmwood Franklin, we teach our students to think beyond today by taking care of tomorrow, and to think beyond ourselves by taking care of others. Such lessons are reflected in Nels’ dedication to our school, which serves as both a lasting tribute and a valuable gift.

I think of EFS as a weaving, The weaving of love, laughter, perhaps even frustration— The range of emotions that encompasses us at each moment And the weaving incorporates all of these moments. When I think of a weaving I think of the moments we put smiles on children’s faces, or perhaps challenge them a bit. I think of the toil, the tears, the aches, the exhilaration and the exuberance. As we weave at EFS, we build and celebrate our home. And in this spirit of weaving, of acceptance and inclusion, In the spirit of recognizing all that there is— Not judging or denouncing or even denoting— But recognizing, Recognizing that when one walks into EFS in the morning What one does truly matters, As it interacts with all the other happenings of the day and creates the weaving. As we weave at EFS, we celebrate our home. We celebrate all who have made that home. As we weave at EFS, I celebrate each and every one of you.
