From the Board President L I Z D U R Y E A M A L O N E Y ’ 70

ast spring, the Board of Trustees voted to approve a new strategic plan. Over two years in the making, the new plan lays out an exciting roadmap that will enable Elmwood Franklin School to continue to build on its core strengths, while ensuring the school continues to set the pace for elementary school education in the 21st century.

L

In the process of creating this new plan, the Board looked at the challenges our school faces moving forward, as well as the opportunities available to us. Many of these challenges are shared with independent schools across the country. Affordability and long-term financial stability are concerns for all independent schools. Elmwood Franklin School must maintain its commitment to competitive salaries and intimate environments where each student is known and nurtured. This is the very core of our program, but it is also what pushes up the price. The average tuition increase for independent schools over the last seven years has been 66%. In the same time period, EFS has seen an average increase of 33.9%.

4

While our rate of increase is considerably less than the average, we must consider our ability to sustain this rate of increase in the future. A commitment to grow the endowment over the next several years coupled with increased fundraising efforts as well as identification of additional non-tuition revenue sources will be crucial to maintaining tuition at an affordable level. Changing demographics will also be a challenge for independent schools in the near future, and Elmwood Franklin is no exception. 75% of our students come from Buffalo, Williamsville and Amherst. A decrease in households with school age children in the relevant zip codes is predicted to be 6% in Buffalo and 5% in Williamsville and Amherst by the year 2014. A smaller and more geographically diverse target market will present new challenges as well. However, while the overall market in this area will be smaller, the number of families with household income over $125,000 is predicted to increase from 5,000 in 2009 to 6,400 by 2014, presenting an excellent opportunity for us moving forward. Thanks to the foresight and generosity of those before us, we are extremely fortunate to have a premier facility in which to educate our students. Our Upper School classrooms, gymnasium and theater are in excellent condition, and our Lower School classrooms have just been upgraded with new, energy efficient windows, carpeting and lighting. However, opportunities for improvement still remain: • A new more efficient HVAC system is needed in the Lower School classrooms • Additional storage units, new desks and new chairs are also needed to complete the Lower School classrooms. • The long awaited purchase of 90 New Amsterdam, affectionately referred to

as “the brown house,” is finally completed and additional capital will be required to repurpose the land. • Parking continues to be an issue that must be addressed. • A gross motor skills room would greatly enhance our Prep program, adding value for both parents and students, and allowing EFS to maintain our position as the premier pre-K and kindergarten experience in WNY. Last but by no means least, technology is an area that presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Identified as the number one priority in our strategic plan due to the impact it has on every facet of our school, we knew that our technological infrastructure was in need of major upgrades. In the last year, with help from a team of experts and a significant challenge grant, both of which were donated by M&T Bank, our infrastructure has been overhauled, new computers have been added in our computer lab, interactive white boards are in every classroom, and new software components allow for better parentschool communication, and posting of grades on-line. Our students are now able to participate in a much larger learning community, with opportunities to interact with scientists, authors, students and endless others from around the world. The computer skills they learn will prepare them for success in the 21st century. Technology has also improved our internal functions as well. Our marketing and admissions department is harnessing the power of social media as they reach out to prospective parents via the web, offering them the opportunity to view video highlights from everyday classes and see for themselves why they should consider an EFS education for their child. The Development office is connecting or reconnecting with alumni around the

world, allowing us to update our database and stay in touch with our graduates, as well as track their successes and share them with our school community. I hope you will log on to the school website and see for yourself what is happening at EFS. Yes, there will continue to be challenges, but we believe they will continue to be outweighed by the opportunities that Elmwood Franklin continues to provide for its students every day: • A flexible curriculum that emphasizes the teaching of core knowledge, critical thinking, leadership, collaboration, and social responsibility. • A strong and engaged faculty given the freedom and the resources to innovate in the development and delivery of their program. • A well maintained facility that offers children the ability to explore science, art, and music, and gain confidence in public speaking through participating on stage in class plays and presentations. • A sports program that allows all students to participate regardless of ability, and focuses on teamwork and sportsmanship. • The opportunity to grow and learn in a safe environment that is committed to the development of the whole child. The board and the administration are excited about the future of our school and the agenda that our strategic plan has set for us. We look forward to keeping you updated on our progress, and we ask for your continued and generous support as we strive to assure that Elmwood Franklin remains the premier pre-K through eighth grade school in Western New York.

Volunteer Recognition Giving isn’t limited to money—acts of kindness, both small and large, have a value that goes beyond words. In May, we welcomed Elmwood Franklin’s many volunteers to a breakfast reception to give special recognition to a few and heartfelt thanks to all.

T H E U N S U N G H E RO AWA R D The Unsung Hero Award honors those volunteers who are “everywhere, doing everything.” This year we recognized four such individuals: Missy Cleary has been a key volunteer with the Auction (specifically Class Gifts) for 12 years, including at least one year of chairing auction. Missy’s creativity has resulted in some key auction gifts that have helped to raise over $150K during her years here. Matt Enstice, a key member of the Board of Trustees’ Buildings & Grounds committee, was instrumental is getting the Lower School hallway renovated and helping plans move forward with our Lower School classrooms. Alison Keane, who ended her term as development chair of the Board this year, has worn many hats at EFS and worn them so well. As a past Auction Chair (co-chairing the second most successful auction ever) and a past Annual Fund Chair (again co-chairing two successful campaigns that surpassed budget), Alison is a top volunteer who always goes the extra mile and never misses a beat. Sybil McGennis, despite her retirement from teaching, continues to give so much of her time to Elmwood Franklin, spending nearly every Thursday in the Development Office addressing birthday cards to our alumni, assisting with Annual Fund mailers, and helping us obtain the most up-to-date information on our database for all donors and graduates. Sybil’s loyalty is unmatched.

9

AUCTION RECOGNITION Auction 2010 recognition was given to chairs Linda Morris, Kim Schlehr and Sheila Walier who led an impressive team of volunteers to raise more than $286,000 for the school.

Georgia W. Kells ’41 January 2, 1928 – April 20, 2009

Elmwood Franklin School sadly acknowledges the passing of Georgia Kells, a 1941 alumna of the Elmwood School. A graduate of the Westover School and Briarcliff College, she was an accomplished golfer and bridge player, and also enjoyed skiing, gardening, traveling, and music. Georgia has many lasting ties to Elmwood Franklin. Her daughter Dee Drew has been a venerated teacher here for more than 25 years, and two of her grandchildren, Cameron Frank ’10 and Madison Frank ’11, both attended EFS in her footsteps. And beyond these very human connections, she left a generous bequest to Elmwood Franklin School that supports our mission and celebrates her legacy.

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: DONNA MUSCARELLA, BOB RICH ’81, SCOTT SAPERSTON ’86

We’ve been looking forward to announcing the success of the 2009/2010 Annual Fund campaign led by Donna Muscarella, Bob Rich ’81, and Scott Saperston ’86—so let’s get right to it: this year’s total of $288,817 not only surpasses the campaign goal of $275,000 but is the highest Annual Fund total ever raised! This great achievement was made possible by the dedication of our chairs and cabinet volunteers and by the generosity of our 667 donors, who know the importance of giving back. And everything our donors give to us, we give back to the students in the form of curricular offerings, classroom materials, enrichment activities, new technology, and other resources—so these gifts make a real difference, both now and in the future. Our most sincere appreciation to all of our donors. We join you in looking forward, and we thank you for giving back.

Technology Fund Updating and adding new technologies is an important priority for EFS. And yet, technological resources come at a cost. This year, donors contributed $48,500 that was combined with a grant from M&T Bank for $50,000 to help to fund technology improvements and upgrades including 23 new workstations in our computer lab, and enhancements to our infrastructure and database. Our gratitude goes to the following donors who have helped to complete these important updates by contributing to the Technology Fund.

Your Support What it means, what it does, and why we need it. Every school wants a supportive and generous community. At Elmwood Franklin School, it's not just a wish; it's a part of who we are. Elmwood Franklin relies on the charitable support of its families, its alumni, and the community-at-large to meet its annual operating expenses. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of providing an Elmwood Franklin education. But beyond its financial necessity,

charitable support is at the very core of our being. As an independent school, Elmwood Franklin was founded and is sustained through the active participation of our contributors. And their contributions come in many forms. Below is an overview of just some of the opportunities available for supporting Elmwood Franklin: its mission, its students, its faculty, and its future.

Financial Support

Special Events

Annual Fund These vital, unrestricted dollars support the school's current operating budget with funds for faculty salaries, financial assistance, classroom materials and activities, technology, library books, field trips, building maintenance, utilities— everything it takes to run the school. The entire EFS community—alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni parents, trustees and Corporation members—is asked to participate. And because the Annual Fund covers the immediate operating expenses of the school—what we need now to educate our students—we ask that donors make it their first giving priority.

Auction The EFS Auction is a 20-plus-year tradition that brings parents and others together for a fun and festive evening and also raises significant funds for the school. A team of volunteers, item donors, catalog advertisers, attendees and bidders collectively contribute more than $200K for the students and faculty of Elmwood Franklin School.

Capital Campaigns Occasionally the school needs to address larger issues and priorities (often, but not always, related to “brick and mortar” projects) that cannot be covered within annual budgeting. Recent examples include the library media center renovation, the theatre and Upper School renovation, and the dining room expansion. Capital gifts are restricted gifts that are made above and beyond regular annual giving in response to such special initiatives, and they enable the school to plan for and pursue long-term institutional vitality. Planned Giving Planned gifts are as special as they are varied—the options are numerous. Planned gifts include bequests, annuities, trusts, and even gifts of real estate or personal property. Such arrangements benefit Elmwood Franklin in obvious ways, and they may also benefit the donor through favorable tax consequences or a new source of income. If you have already included Elmwood Franklin in your estate plans, please let us know. We would like the opportunity to thank you personally. If you would like to learn more about the possibility of planned giving, contact your financial advisor or the Development Office.

Volunteerism Parent Council The Parent Council initiates a number of activities that allow families to become more closely involved in the life of the school and lend support to the school, financially, organizationally, and otherwise. Among other projects, the Parent Council organizes two book fairs each year that provide funds for the school and books for the library. Alumni Council Through events and service throughout the year, the Alumni Council makes strategic efforts to maintain communication with alumni, inform them of current school happenings, involve them in the life of the school, and garner their financial support. Special Opportunities There is no limit to the ways in which our families, alumni, and friends can support Elmwood Franklin. Providing in-kind donations of goods or services, spreading word of the school to potential enrollees, helping out in the classroom or library—the active involvement of our community is what raises us up and sets us apart.

Whatever your ways of supporting Elmwood Franklin School, we thank you. It couldn't be done without you.
